The Fruits of the Apamarjana Hymn
Verse 1 (padma.6.79.1)
mahādeva uvāca apāmārjanakaṁ divyaṁ paramādbhutameva ca paṭhitavyaṁ viśeṣeṇa putrakāmārthasiddhaye
Mahadeva said: This divine and supremely wondrous apamarjana hymn should especially be recited for the fulfillment of the desire for children and for material success.
Verse 2 (padma.6.79.2)
etatstotraṁ paṭhetprājñaḥ sarvakāmārthasiddhaye ekakālaṁ dvikālaṁ vā ye paṭhaṁti dvijātayaḥ
The wise should recite this hymn for the fulfillment of all desires. Those twice-born who recite it once or twice daily —
Verse 3 (padma.6.79.3)
āyuśca śrīrbalaṁ tasya varddhayaṁti dine dine brāhmaṇo labhate vidyāṁ kṣatriyo rājyameva vā
— their lifespan, prosperity, and strength increase day by day. A brahmin attains learning, a kshatriya attains sovereignty,
Verse 4 (padma.6.79.4)
vaiśyo dhanasamṛddhiṁ ca śūdro bhaktiṁ ca viṁdati anyaiśca labhate bhaktiṁ paṭhanācchravaṇājjapāt
— a vaishya attains wealth and prosperity, and a shudra attains devotion. Others too attain devotion through its recitation, hearing, and repetition.
Verse 5 (padma.6.79.5)
sāmavedaphalaṁ tasya jāyate naganandini akhilaṁ pāpasaṁghātaṁ tatkṣaṇādeva naśyati
O daughter of the mountain, one obtains thereby the fruit of studying the Samaveda. The entire mass of sin is destroyed in that very instant.
Verse 6 (padma.6.79.6)
iti jñātvā tu bho devi paṭhitavyaṁ samāhitaiḥ putrāścaiva tathā lakṣmīḥ saṁpūrṇā bhavati dhruvam
O goddess, knowing this, the concentrated should recite it. By this, children and prosperity most certainly become complete.
Verse 7 (padma.6.79.7)
likhitvā bhūrjapatre tu yo dhārayati vaiṣṇavaḥ ihaloke sukhaṁ bhuktvā yāti viṣṇoḥ paraṁ padam
Whatever Vaishnava writes this on birch-bark and wears it, having enjoyed happiness in this world, attains Vishnu's supreme abode.
Verse 8 (padma.6.79.8)
paṭhitvā ślokamekaṁ tu tulasīṁ yaḥ samarpayet sarvaṁ tīrthaṁ kṛtaṁ tena tulasyāḥ pūjane kṛte
Whoever recites even a single verse and offers tulasi — by that offering of tulasi, all pilgrimages are, as it were, accomplished by him.
Verse 9 (padma.6.79.9)
etatstotraṁ tu paramaṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ muktidāyakam pṛthvīdānasamaṁ pāṭhādviṣṇulokaṁ tu gacchati
This supreme Vaishnava hymn grants liberation. By its recitation, one attains a merit equal to the gift of the whole earth and goes to the world of Vishnu.
Verse 10 (padma.6.79.10)
japetstotraṁ viśeṣeṇa viṣṇulokasya vāṁchayā bālānāṁ jīvanārthāya paṭhitavyaṁ samāhitaiḥ
One should especially recite this hymn with the desire for the world of Vishnu. It should be recited with concentration for the protection of children's lives.
Verse 11 (padma.6.79.11)
rogagrahābhibhūtānāṁ bālānāṁ śāṁtikārakam bhūta graha viṣaṁ caiva paṭhanādeva naśyati
It brings peace to children afflicted by disease and planetary evil. Evil spirits, malefic planets, and poison are destroyed by its mere recitation.
Verse 12 (padma.6.79.12)
kaṁṭhe tulasijāṁ mālāṁ dhṛtvā vipro hi yaḥ paṭhet sa ca vai vaiṣṇavo jñeyo viṣṇulokaṁ sa gacchati
The brahmin who, wearing a garland of tulasi beads around his neck, recites this, should indeed be known as a Vaishnava, and he attains the world of Vishnu.
Verse 13 (padma.6.79.13)
kaṁṭhe mālā dhṛtā yena śaṁkhacakrādicihnitaḥ vaiṣṇavaḥ procyate vipraḥ stotraṁ caitatpaṭhansadā
The brahmin who wears the garland around his neck and bears the marks of the conch, discus, and the like, and who ever recites this hymn, is called a Vaishnava.
Verse 14 (padma.6.79.14)
ihalokaṁ parityajya viṣṇulokaṁ sa gacchati mohamāyāparityakto daṁbhatṛṣṇāvivarjitaḥ
Having relinquished this world, he goes to the world of Vishnu, freed from delusion and illusion, and rid of pride and craving.
Verse 15 (padma.6.79.15)
etatstotraṁ paṭheddivyaṁ paraṁ nirvāṇamāpnuyāt te dhanyāḥ saṁti bhūrloke ye viprā vaiṣṇavāḥ smṛtāḥ
Whoever recites this divine hymn attains the supreme liberation. Blessed indeed are those brahmins on this earth who are known as Vaishnavas.
Verse 16 (padma.6.79.16)
svātmā vai tāritastaistu sakulaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ te vai dhanyatamā loke nārāyaṇaparāyaṇāḥ tairbhaktiśca sadā kāryā te vai bhāgavatā narāḥ
By them, not only is their own self liberated, but their entire lineage too, without doubt. They are the most blessed in the world, devoted wholly to Narayana. They should ever practice devotion — they alone are true Bhagavatas.
