The Rite of Pavitraropana

Chapter 85All chaptersChapter 87

Verse 1 (padma.6.86.1)

mahādeva uvāca śrāvaṇe māsi saṁprāpte pavitrāropaṇo vidhiḥ yasminkṛte tu deveśi divyabhaktiḥ prajāyate

Mahadeva said: When the month of Shravana arrives, there is the rite of Pavitraropana, the offering of the sacred thread; by performing it, O queen of gods, divine devotion is born.

Verse 2 (padma.6.86.2)

pavitrāropaṇaṁ viṣṇoḥ kartavyaṁ śraddhayā budhaiḥ saṁpūrṇā jāyate tasya pūjā pārvati vārṣikī

The wise should perform Vishnu's Pavitraropana with faith. O Parvati, by this his year-long worship becomes complete.

Verse 3 (padma.6.86.3)

pavitrāropaṇe viṣṇorjāyate sukhamātmanaḥ saṁpūjite sadā viṣṇau nānāsukhamavāpnuyāt

From Vishnu's Pavitraropana, happiness of the soul arises. When Vishnu is ever properly worshipped, a man obtains manifold happiness.

Verse 4 (padma.6.86.4)

sūtraṁ vāsasamānīya brāhmaṇyā kartitaṁ tathā svenaiva kartitaṁ sūtraṁ tenaiva ca prakārayet

One should procure thread made from cloth-fibers and spun by a brahmin woman; or thread spun by oneself may also be used for this rite.

Verse 5 (padma.6.86.5)

sacchūdryā kartitaṁ sūtraṁ tadgrāhyaṁ vā tathaiva ca anyathā vikrayeṇāpi grāhyaṁ cāpi yathātatham

Thread spun by a virtuous shudra woman may likewise be accepted; otherwise it may also be purchased and used as available.

Verse 6 (padma.6.86.6)

kṣaumenaiva prakartavyaḥ pavitrāropaṇo vidhiḥ rūpyeṇa vā tathā kāryaṁ pavitraṁ viṣṇudaivatam

The rite of Pavitraropana should be performed with silk; or this sacred thread for the deity Vishnu may also be made of silver.

Verse 7 (padma.6.86.7)

sauvarṇenāpi deveśi kartavyaṁ vidhipūrvakam abhāve sarvadhātūnāṁ grāhyaṁ sūtraṁ tathā budhaiḥ

O queen of gods, it may also be duly made of gold. In the absence of any of these metals, the wise should simply take ordinary thread.

Verse 8 (padma.6.86.8)

kṛtvā tu trivṛtaṁ sūtraṁ prakṣālyamudakena tu liṁge liṁgapramāṇaṁ ca pratimāyāṁ yathāvidhiḥ

Having made the thread threefold, it should be washed with water. For the linga, the measure should follow the linga's own size; for an image, it should follow the prescribed rule.

Verse 9 (padma.6.86.9)

pādau vai jānuparyaṁtaṁ tathā nābhisamaṁ smṛtam jyeṣṭhaṁ madhyaṁ kaniṣṭhaṁ ca pavitraṁ kārayedbudhaḥ

The measure from the feet to the knees, and up to the navel, has been prescribed. The wise should make the sacred thread in three lengths — long, medium, and short.

Verse 10 (padma.6.86.10)

saṁvatsaradinaistadvattadarddhārddhena saṁkhyayā sūtreṇaiva prakarttavyaṁ graṁthināṣṭottaraṁ śatam

According to the number of days in the year, or in half or a quarter of that number, one hundred and eight knots should be tied in that very thread.

Verse 11 (padma.6.86.11)

tadarddhasaṁkhyakenāpi yuktaṁ vā tatra pārvati liṁge vai liṁgasaṁjñaṁ tu gaṁgānāgaiśca saṁyutam

O Parvati, or it may be made with half that number as well. For the linga, associated with the name proper to the linga, joined with the marks of Ganga and the serpent —

Verse 12 (padma.6.86.12)

pratimāyāṁ tathā devi pavitraṁ vanamālakam yathāśobhā tathā kāryaṁ yena viṣṇuḥ prasīdati

— and on the image, O goddess, the sacred thread should be adorned with a garland of forest flowers. It should be made in whatever way seems most fitting, so that Vishnu becomes pleased.

Verse 13 (padma.6.86.13)

ekaṁ vai supavitraṁ tu gaṁdhākhyaṁ kārayetsadā taṁtunā yacca saṁyuktaṁ karttavyaṁ vaiṣṇavairnaraiḥ

One excellent sacred thread, called by the name 'Gandha,' should always be made. Whatever is joined with the thread should be made by Vaishnava men.

Verse 14 (padma.6.86.14)

devānāṁ ca tathā proktaṁ pavitraṁ viṣṇudaivatam aṁbarīṣādyā bhaktāśca anye'pi ca dhruvādayaḥ

For the gods too, the sacred thread of the deity Vishnu is likewise prescribed. To devotees such as Ambarisha and others, and to Dhruva and the rest —

Verse 15 (padma.6.86.15)

pavitrāṇi tataḥ paścāddātavyānīha pārvati pratipaddhanadasyoktā pavitrāropaṇe tithiḥ

— sacred threads should thereafter be given, here, O Parvati. In the Pavitraropana, the first lunar day is said to belong to Dhanada (Kubera).

Verse 16 (padma.6.86.16)

lakṣmyā devyā dvitīyā tu tithīnāmuttamā tithiḥ tṛtīyā tu tava proktā caturthī gaṇapasya ca

The second day, best among the tithis, belongs to the goddess Lakshmi; the third is declared to be yours, and the fourth belongs to Ganapati.

Verse 17 (padma.6.86.17)

paṁcamī caṁdramasaścaiva ṣaṣṭhī vai kārttikasya ca saptamī ca raveḥ proktā durgāyāścāṣṭamī smṛtā

The fifth belongs to the moon, and the sixth to Kartikeya. The seventh is said to belong to the sun, and the eighth is remembered as Durga's.

Verse 18 (padma.6.86.18)

navamī caiva mātṝṇāṁ yamasya daśamī tathā ekādaśī tu sarveṣāṁ dvādaśī mādhavasya ca

The ninth belongs to the Mother-goddesses, and the tenth to Yama. The eleventh belongs to all the gods, and the twelfth to Madhava.

Verse 19 (padma.6.86.19)

trayodaśī tu kāmasya śarvasyoktā caturdaśī tadvatpaṁcadaśī khyātā dhāturvai hyarcane punaḥ

The thirteenth belongs to Kama, and the fourteenth is said to belong to Shiva. Likewise, the fifteenth, the full moon, is renowned as belonging to Brahma in worship.

Verse 20 (padma.6.86.20)

etā vai tithayaḥ proktāḥ pavitrāropaṇocitāḥ kaniṣṭhe dvādaśa proktā madhyame dviguṇā smṛtāḥ

These same tithis are declared suitable for Pavitraropana. In the shortest thread, twelve knots are prescribed; in the medium, twice that number.

Verse 21 (padma.6.86.21)

triguṇāścottame caiva graṁthayaśca pavitrake karpūrakesarābhyāṁ vā caṁdanena haridrayā

In the finest, three times that number of knots should be in the sacred thread. With camphor and saffron, or with sandal-paste and turmeric —

Verse 22 (padma.6.86.22)

raṁjayitvā tu tatsarvaṁ sthāpyaṁ navakaraṁḍake devasya yajanaṁ yatra sthāpyāni devavattadā

— having colored all of it, it should be placed in a new box. Where the worship of the deity takes place, it should then be installed there, like the deity himself.

Verse 23 (padma.6.86.23)

ādau devārcanaṁ kṛtvā vāsanaṁ sapavitrakam adhivāsite pavitre tu tato vai pūjanaṁ smṛtam

First, having worshipped the deity, one should perform the overnight ceremonial placement of the sacred thread. Once the sacred thread has been thus placed, its worship is then prescribed.

Verse 24 (padma.6.86.24)

pavitreṣu ca yaddevāsteṣāṁ nikaṭamācaret brahmāviṣṇustathā rudrastrayo vai sūtradevatāḥ

One should act in the presence of the deities present within the sacred threads. Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra — these three are the deities of the thread.

Verse 25 (padma.6.86.25)

kriyā ca pauruṣī vīrā caturthī cāparājitā jayā ca vijayā caiva muktidā ca sadāśivā

Kriya, Paurushi, Vira, the fourth Aparajita, Jaya, Vijaya, Muktida, and Sadashiva —

Verse 26 (padma.6.86.26)

manonmanī tu navamī daśamī sarvatomukhī graṁthīnāṁ devatāścaiva sūtreṣu viniveśayet

— the ninth Manonmani, and the tenth Sarvatomukhi — these deities of the knots should be established within the threads.

Verse 27 (padma.6.86.27)

āvāhanamudrayā vai śāstroktavidhinā tataḥ āvāhya tatra tāḥ samyaksaṁnidhīkaraṇaṁ smṛtam

Then, with the gesture of invocation, according to the rite prescribed in scripture, having duly invoked those deities there, the establishing of their close presence is then prescribed.

Verse 28 (padma.6.86.28)

saṁnidhīkaraṇamudrayā saṁnidhīkaraṇam rakṣyāmudrayā saṁrakṣya dhenumudrayā amṛtīkṛtya ānīya devasyāgre kalaśodakaṁ gṛhītvā āgamoktena maṁtreṇa prokṣaṇaṁ vidhāya klīṁ kṛṣṇāya iti maṁtreṇa prokṣaṇaṁ gaṁdhadhūpadīpa naivedyādikaṁ dattvā tāṁbūlādikaṁ dattvā ṣoḍaśopacārādinā pavitradevatā abhyarcya gaṁdhapavitraṁ dhūpitaṁ kṛtvā devābhimukhaḥ san namaskāramudrayā devaṁ abhimaṁtrayīta āmaṁtrito mahādeva sārddhaṁ devyā gaṇādibhiḥ maṁtrairvā lokapālaiśca sahitaḥ parivārakaiḥ

With the gesture of establishing close presence, their presence should be assured; with the protective gesture, they should be safeguarded; with the gesture of the cow, they should be made ambrosial. Then, bringing the vessel of water before the deity, one should sprinkle it with the mantra prescribed in scripture, and also sprinkle it with the mantra 'Klim, to Krishna.' Having offered sandal-paste, incense, a lamp, food-offerings, and betel, one should worship the deities of the sacred thread with the sixteen ritual offerings and the rest. Having perfumed the fragrant sacred thread with incense, facing the deity, one should invoke the deity with the gesture of salutation. 'O great god, invited together with the Goddess and your attendants, along with the mantras, the guardians of the directions, and your retinue —'

Verse 29 (padma.6.86.29)

āgaccha bhagavanviṣṇo vidhisaṁpūrṇahetave prātastvatpūjanaṁ kurmaḥ sānnidhyaṁ niyataṁ kuru

'— come, O Lord Vishnu, for the fulfillment of this rite. In the morning we shall perform your worship; grant your assured presence here.'

Verse 30 (padma.6.86.30)

tadgaṁdhaṁ ca pavitraṁ ca devasya rāghavasya ca śrīviṣṇoścaraṇe tatni kṣipya prātaḥ svakriyāṁ vidhāya puṇyāhasvastivācana jayajaya śabdairghaṁṭādi vāditra nirghoṣatūryādiśabdaiḥ pavitraiḥ pūjāṁ kuryāt tataḥ prathamaṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ tato madhyamaṁ kaniṣṭhaṁ ca ebhiḥ sarvairyathākrameṇa pūjāṁ kuryāt oṁvāsudevāya vidmahe viṣṇudevāya dhīmahi tanno devaḥ pracodayāt iti pavitradānaṁ athavā svamaṁtraiḥ tato vai mahatīṁ pūjāṁ viṣṇoḥ kuryātprasādinīm yayā vai kṛtayā devi viṣṇurātmā prasīdati

Having placed that fragrant sacred thread at the feet of the deity Raghava and of Shri Vishnu, and in the morning having performed one's daily rites, one should worship with the sacred threads amid recitations for auspiciousness and well-being, cries of 'victory, victory,' and the sounding of bells, trumpets and other instruments. Then, first with the longest thread, then with the medium, and then with the shortest — with all of these, worship should be performed in order. 'Om, we know Vasudeva, we meditate on the god Vishnu, may that god inspire us' — with this mantra, or with one's own personal mantras, the sacred thread should be offered. Then that great worship of Vishnu should be performed, which brings him pleasure — O goddess, by the performance of which Vishnu's very soul becomes gladdened.

Verse 31 (padma.6.86.31)

samaṁtāddīpamālā ca kattarvyā ca vidhānataḥ caturvidhaṁ tathā cānnaṁ naivedyaṁ kārayedbudhaḥ

A garland of lamps should be arranged all around, in due order, and the wise should prepare a food-offering of four kinds.

Verse 32 (padma.6.86.32)

pavitrāṇi tato dadyātpūjitāni tu śobhane bhaktyā caiva viśeṣeṇa śrīguruṁ pūjayettataḥ

O beautiful one, the worshipped sacred threads should then be given away. Thereafter, with special devotion, one's revered guru should be worshipped.

Verse 33 (padma.6.86.33)

vastrālaṁkāravidhinā pūjanīyo gururmahān pūjayitvā guruṁ tatra pavitraṁ dhārayettataḥ

The great guru should be worshipped with garments and ornaments as offerings. Having worshipped the guru there, one should then wear the sacred thread oneself.

Verse 34 (padma.6.86.34)

atha ye vaiṣṇavāḥ saṁti tebhyastāṁbūlādikaṁ dattvā pūrṇāhutimagnaye dattvā śrīnivāsāya śrīkṛṣṇāya karma nivedayet maṁtrahīnaṁ kriyāhīnaṁ bhaktihīnaṁ tu keśava yatpūjito mayā samyaksaṁpūrṇaṁ yātu me dhruvam

Then, having given betel and the like to whatever Vaishnavas are present, and having offered the final oblation into the fire, one should dedicate this rite to Shrinivasa, Shri Krishna: 'O Keshava, though I have worshipped you lacking in mantra, lacking in proper ritual, and lacking in devotion, let this worship still surely become complete for me.'

Verse 35 (padma.6.86.35)

tata udvāsya iṣṭabaṁdhubhistathā vaiṣṇavairviprairvā sahitaḥ sanmṛṣṭamannaṁ svayaṁ bhuṁjīta etatpūjanakaṁ divyaṁ ye śṛṇvaṁti dvijottamāḥ sarvapāpavinirmuktā yāṁti viṣṇoḥ paraṁ padam

Then, having bid farewell to the deity, one should oneself partake of pure food together with beloved kinsmen and Vaishnava brahmins. Those excellent twice-born who hear this divine rite of worship become freed of all sin and go to the supreme abode of Vishnu.

Verse 36 (padma.6.86.36)

yāvattapati vai caṁdro yāvattapati vai raviḥ pavitrāropakastadvattapyate nātra saṁśayaḥ

As long as the moon shines, and as long as the sun shines, so long does the performer of Pavitraropana likewise continue to shine, without doubt.

Verse 37 (padma.6.86.37)

pṛthivyāṁ yāni dānāni niyamāśca tathā punaḥ sarve vai pūrṇatāṁ yāṁti pavitrāropaṇe kṛte

Whatever gifts and vows exist upon the earth, all of them attain their fulfillment once Pavitraropana has been performed.

Verse 38 (padma.6.86.38)

utsavānāṁ ca rājāyaṁ pavitrāropaṇo vidhiḥ brahmahā śudhyate tatra nātra kāryā vicāraṇā

This rite of Pavitraropana is the very king among all festivals. By it, even a slayer of a brahmin is purified — of this no doubt need be entertained.

Verse 39 (padma.6.86.39)

satyaṁ satyaṁ punaḥ satyaṁ yaduktaṁ naganaṁdini pavitrāropaṇe puṇyaṁ darśane tu tathā smṛtam

O daughter of the mountain, what has been said is true, true, and true again. The merit that is in performing Pavitraropana is likewise remembered as present even in merely witnessing it.

Verse 40 (padma.6.86.40)

śūdrairvātha mahābhāge pavitrāropaṇo vidhiḥ kṛto yairbhaktibhāvena te vai dhanyatamāḥ smṛtāḥ

O greatly blessed one, even among shudras, those who have performed this rite of Pavitraropana with devotion are remembered as the most blessed of all.

Verse 41 (padma.6.86.41)

dhanyo'haṁ kṛtakṛtyo'haṁ saubhāgyo dharaṇītale mayā tu yā kṛtā bhaktirvaiṣṇavī muktidāyinī

[One who has performed this rite thinks:] 'I am blessed, I am fulfilled, I am fortunate upon this earth, for I have practiced that Vaishnava devotion which grants liberation.'
