Verse 2 (padma.7.10.2)

Vyasa said: O child, hear the supreme fruit of the worship of the Lord of Lakshmi, hearing which all people attain supreme knowledge.
Verse 3 (padma.7.10.3)
vipra dvādaśamāseṣu māghādiṣu sanātanaḥ pūjitavyo vidhānairyaiḥ śṛṇu tāni vadāmyaham
O brahmin, hear the rites by which the eternal Vishnu should be worshipped in the twelve months, beginning with Magha — I shall now declare them.
Verse 4 (padma.7.10.4)
māghemāsi samāyāte sarvamāsottame śubhe āmiṣaṁ maithunaṁ caiva tyājayedvaiṣṇavottamaḥ
When the month of Magha comes, finest and most auspicious of all months, the excellent Vaishnava should give up both meat and sexual union.
Verse 5 (padma.7.10.5)
prātaḥsnāyī bhavennityaṁ tailānyapi ca varjayet dvirbhojanaṁ parānnaṁ ca māghemāsi parityajet
He should bathe daily at dawn, and forgo oil too; in the month of Magha he should give up both eating twice a day and eating food given by others.
Verse 6 (padma.7.10.6)
prātaḥ śuklāṁbaradharaḥ kṛtapaṁca mahādhvaraḥ saparyāmārabhedviṣṇoḥ sthiracitto hi mānavaḥ
At dawn, wearing white garments, having completed the five great sacrifices, the man of steady mind should begin the worship of Vishnu.
Verse 7 (padma.7.10.7)
īṣaduṣṇajalaiḥ śuddhaiḥ snāpayedviṣṇumavyayam atiślathaiścaṁdanaiśca viṣṇoraṅgāni lepayet
The imperishable Vishnu should be bathed with slightly warm, pure water, and his limbs anointed with exceedingly fine sandal-paste.
Verse 8 (padma.7.10.8)
pūjayejjagadīśasya devadevasya cakriṇaḥ prakṣālitāni pātrāṇi jalahīnāni kārayet
The God of gods, the discus-bearing Lord of the universe, should be worshipped; his vessels should be washed and kept free of water.
Verse 9 (padma.7.10.9)
snāpayitvā jagannāthamīṣaduṣṇena vāriṇā prokṣitavyaṁ taccharīraṁ divyavastreṇa yatnataḥ
Having bathed the Lord of the universe with slightly warm water, his body should be carefully wiped with a divine cloth.
Verse 10 (padma.7.10.10)
salilairīṣaduṣṇaiśca prasnāpayati keśavam māghemāsi dvijaśreṣṭha phalaṁ tasya mayocyate
Whoever bathes Keshava with slightly warm water in the month of Magha — O best of the twice-born, hear from me his fruit.
Verse 11 (padma.7.10.11)
vimuktaḥ pātakaiḥ sarvairjanmajanmāṁtarārjitaiḥ iha bhuṁkte sukhaṁ sarvaṁ śeṣe yāti harergṛham
Freed of every sin gathered across countless births, he here enjoys every happiness, and at the end goes to the abode of Hari.
Verse 12 (padma.7.10.12)
yatnātprakṣālya pātrāṇi kṛtvāśuddhānivāribhiḥ yaḥ pūjayejjagannāthaṁ tasya puṇyaṁ niśāmaya
Whoever carefully washes the vessels, making them fit with pure water, and worships the Lord of the universe — hear his merit.
Verse 13 (padma.7.10.13)
iha bhuktvākhilānkāmānsarvavyādhivivarjitaḥ aṁte yugasahasrāṇi tiṣṭhetkeśavamaṁdiram
Here, enjoying every desire, freed of every disease, at the end he dwells for a thousand ages in the temple of Keshava.
Verse 14 (padma.7.10.14)
prabhāte viśvasaṁdhyāyāṁ purataścakrapāṇinaḥ jvalaṁtaṁ sthāpayedvahniṁ nirddhūmaṁ vaiṣṇavo janaḥ
At dawn, at the universal twilight, before the discus-bearer, the Vaishnava should place a smokeless, burning fire.
Verse 15 (padma.7.10.15)
śītasya vāraṇārthāya sāyaṁprātaśca vaiṣṇavaḥ māghe viṣṇvagrato vahniṁ jvālayettatphalaṁśṛṇu
To ward off the cold, the Vaishnava should, both morning and evening in Magha, kindle a fire before Vishnu — hear its fruit.
Verse 16 (padma.7.10.16)
iha bhuktvākhilānkāmānputrapautrasamanvitaḥ aṁte viṣṇupuraṁ yāti daivatairapi durllabham
Here, enjoying every desire together with sons and grandsons, at the end he goes to the abode of Vishnu, hard to attain even for the gods.
Verse 17 (padma.7.10.17)
yathaivātmā tathā viṣṇuḥ saṁdehonātra vidyate svapaṁtaṁ devadeveśaṁ paryaṁkopari keśavam
As one's own self is, so is Vishnu — of this there is no doubt. For God of gods Keshava, reclining upon the couch,
Verse 18 (padma.7.10.18)
ātmanaḥ kurute martyo yathā śītanivāraṇam kṣīreṇa snāpayedyastu māghe māsi janārdanam tasmai devottamo viṣṇuḥ saṁtuṣṭo na dadāti kim
just as a man wards off cold for himself, so it should be done for him. Whoever bathes Janardana with milk in the month of Magha — pleased with him, what would the best of gods, Vishnu, not give?
Verse 19 (padma.7.10.19)
tathā śītakṣayaṁ kuryāddivyavastreṇa cakriṇaḥ
In the same way, cold should be dispelled for the discus-bearer with a divine cloth.
Verse 20 (padma.7.10.20)
yaḥ pūjayetsakṛnmāghe snāpayitvā caturbhujam nālikerodakairdugdhaiḥ phalaṁ tasya vadāmyaham
Whoever, even once in Magha, worships the four-armed Vishnu, bathing him with coconut water and milk — his fruit I now declare.
Verse 21 (padma.7.10.21)
narakābdhau majjamānāndustare svena karmaṇā uddhṛtya koṭipuruṣānsa yāti cakriṇaḥ padam
Delivering tens of millions of men, sinking by their own deeds in the ocean of hell hard to cross, he goes to the abode of the discus-bearer.
Verse 22 (padma.7.10.22)
māghe māse ca śuklāyāṁ paṁcamyāṁ dvijasattama ekādaśyāṁ ca paṁcamyāṁ haripūjā viśeṣataḥ
O best of the twice-born, on the fifth day of the bright fortnight of Magha, on Ekadashi, and on the fifth day, the worship of Hari should be undertaken especially.
Verse 23 (padma.7.10.23)
dātavyo devadevāya sapadmāya murāraye pāyaso dhūpasahito māghemāsi dine dine
Every day, in the month of Magha, sweetened rice-pudding along with incense should be offered to the God of gods, the lotus-bearer, foe of Mura.
Verse 24 (padma.7.10.24)
sadhūpapāyasaṁ yastu māghe yacchati cakriṇe tasya puṇyaphalaṁ vacmi śṛṇu vaiṣṇava jaimine
Whoever offers incense together with rice-pudding to the discus-bearer in Magha — his merit's fruit I now declare, hear it, O Vaishnava Jaimini.
Verse 25 (padma.7.10.25)
aṁte viṣṇupuraṁ gatvā manvaṁtaracatuṣṭayam bhuṁkte manoramānbhogānprasādāccakrapāṇinaḥ
At the end, going to Vishnu's abode, for four manvantaras, by the grace of the discus-bearer, he enjoys delightful pleasures.
Verse 26 (padma.7.10.26)
punarāgatya dharaṇīṁ cakravartī nṛpo bhavet bhuṁkte ca bhogaṁ suciraṁ mṛto yāti harergṛham
Then returning to earth he becomes an emperor, and after enjoying pleasures for a long time, upon death he goes to the abode of Hari.
Verse 27 (padma.7.10.27)
paṁcamyāṁ vāpi saptamyāmekādaśyāṁ ca jaimine aśakto vaiṣṇavo dadyātparamānnaṁ murāraye
O Jaimini, on the fifth, or the seventh, or on Ekadashi, even a Vaishnava unable to do more should still give fine rice-pudding to the foe of Mura.
Verse 28 (padma.7.10.28)
kṛṣṇapakṣāddivajaśreṣṭha śuklapakṣe viśeṣataḥ śuklapakṣe tithiṣveṣu dadyādannaṁ murāraye
O best of the twice-born, even in the dark fortnight, but especially in the bright fortnight, on these lunar days, food should be offered to the foe of Mura.
Verse 29 (padma.7.10.29)
ekāhamapi yo māghe viṣṇave daityajiṣṇave sapūpaṁpāyasaṁ dadyānna tasya durllabho hariḥ
Whatever man, even for a single day in Magha, offers cakes together with rice-pudding to Vishnu, conqueror of the demons — for him Hari does not remain hard to attain.
Verse 30 (padma.7.10.30)
yatkicciddivajatuṣṭyarthaṁ māghemāsi pradīyate tadakṣayaṁ bhavetpuṁsaḥ ko'pi nāstyatra saṁśayaḥ
Whatever is offered in the month of Magha for the satisfaction of the Twice-born (Hari) becomes imperishable for that man — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 31 (padma.7.10.31)
māghe māsi kṛtaṁ karma śubhaṁ vāśubhameva vā tasya nāsti kṣayaṁ vipra manvaṁtaraśatairapi
O brahmin, a deed done in the month of Magha, whether good or ill, does not diminish even across hundreds of manvantaras.
Verse 32 (padma.7.10.32)
māghe caṁpakapuṣpeṇa yo'rcayetkamalāpatim sa gacchetparamaṁ dhāma vimuktaḥ sarvapātakaiḥ
Whoever, in Magha, worships the Lord of Lakshmi with champaka flowers, he, freed of every sin, goes to the supreme abode.
Verse 33 (padma.7.10.33)
yāvaṁti svarṇapuṣpāṇi dīyaṁte cakrapāṇaye tāvadyugasahasrāṇi sthīyate viṣṇumaṁdiram
For as many thousand ages as golden flowers are offered to the discus-bearer, for that long he dwells in the temple of Vishnu.
Verse 34 (padma.7.10.34)
merutulyasuvarṇāni datvā bhavati yatphalam ekena svarṇapuṣpeṇa hariṁ saṁpūjya tatphalam
The fruit that comes from giving gold equal in weight to Mount Meru, that same fruit comes from worshipping Hari with a single golden flower.
Verse 35 (padma.7.10.35)
suvarṇapuṣpaṁ viprendra sarvadā keśavapriyam māghemāsi viśeṣeṇa pavitraṁ keśavapriyam
O lord of brahmins, the golden flower is ever dear to Keshava; in the month of Magha it is especially pure and dear to Keshava.
Verse 36 (padma.7.10.36)
suvarṇakusumairdivyairyena nārādhito hariḥ ratnairhīnaḥ suvarṇādyaiḥ sa bhavejjanmajanmani
Whoever does not worship Hari with divine golden flowers remains, birth after birth, devoid of gold and other jewels.
Verse 37 (padma.7.10.37)
phalaṁ caṁpakapuṣpasya bravīmyahaṁ viśeṣataḥ ākarṇaya dvijaśreṣṭha setihāsamanuttamam
Now I shall tell in particular the fruit of the champaka flower. O best of the twice-born, hear with attention this excellent story.
Verse 38 (padma.7.10.38)
suvarṇo nāma bhūpālo balavānsarvaśāstravit āryāvarteṣu sarveṣu babhūva vipravarcasā
There was a king named Suvarna, mighty and learned in every scripture, who, throughout Aryavarta, became renowned through the brahmins' own power.
Verse 39 (padma.7.10.39)
rājaśriyā vidyayā ca vayasā ca sa bhūpatiḥ atipramatto viprarṣe sadā pāparato'bhavat
Intoxicated by royal fortune, learning, and youth, O sage among brahmins, that king, ever most reckless, remained always immersed in sin.
Verse 40 (padma.7.10.40)
pākhaṁḍamaṁtriṇāṁ vākyairvinādoṣairapi dvija dhanalobhāttena rājñā daṁḍyaṁte sādhavo janāḥ
O brahmin, by the words of hypocritical ministers, out of greed for wealth, that king would punish even faultless, saintly people.
Verse 41 (padma.7.10.41)
anyāyopārjitaṁ vittaṁ gītavādyādibhirvṛtaḥ samastaṁ nāśayāmāsa yajñadānavivarjitaḥ
Wealth earned through injustice, he, surrounded by song and music, devoid of sacrifice and charity, would utterly squander away.
Verse 42 (padma.7.10.42)
na jñātipoṣaṇaṁ cakre na devadvijabhojanam na ca yācakasaṁtuṣṭiṁ sarvadā pāpamohitaḥ
He did not support even his own kin, did not feed gods and brahmins, never contented beggars — ever bewildered by sin.
Verse 43 (padma.7.10.43)
He did not honor guests, was ever given over to sin; that king, having become the very house of sin, remained always in his own home.
Verse 44 (padma.7.10.44)
kṛtāni tena pāpāni yānyanyānyavivekinām api varṣaśataiḥ śaktaḥ saṁkhyātuṁ janitāni kim
The sins he committed exceeded even the sins of every other unwise man — who, even in hundreds of years, could count them all?
Verse 45 (padma.7.10.45)
ekadā sa mahīpālaḥ kāmena parimohitaḥ jagāma veśyānilayaṁ niśīthe duritāśayaḥ
Once that king, exceedingly bewildered by desire, his mind immersed in sin, went by night to the house of a courtesan.
Verse 46 (padma.7.10.46)
tamāyāṁtaṁ tato dṛṣṭvā bhūpālamujjvalāhvayā sahasotthāya paryaṁke cakre tatpādavaṁdanam
Seeing him arrive, that courtesan named Ujjvala at once rose from her couch and bowed at the king's feet.
Verse 47 (padma.7.10.47)
prakṣālya tatpādayugaṁ bhṛṁgārasalilaiśca sā maṁce niveśayāmāsa dorbhyāmāliṅgya taṁ nṛpam
Washing his two feet with water from a vessel, seating him upon the couch, she embraced that king with her own two arms.
Verse 48 (padma.7.10.48)
tatpremāmṛtadhārābhiḥ sikto'sau pṛthivīpatiḥ tasminnuvāsa paryaṁke tayā saha kutūhalī
Bathed by the streams of the nectar of her love, that king, filled with eager delight, sat there with her upon that same couch.
Verse 49 (padma.7.10.49)
tataḥ sā gaṇikā prītyā hasaṁtī navayauvanā dadau caṁpakapuṣpāṇāṁ tasmai bhūmibhuje svayam
Then that courtesan, in the fullness of her youth, laughing with delight, herself brought a garland of champaka flowers for that king.
Verse 50 (padma.7.10.50)
puṣpamālā puṣpamekaṁ tasmādbhūpati hastataḥ papāta dharaṇīpṛṣṭhe gandhavyāptadigaṁtaram
From that garland of flowers, one blossom, its fragrance spreading in every direction, fell from the king's hand to the ground.
Verse 51 (padma.7.10.51)
taccyutaṁ kusumaṁ dṛṣṭvā sa rājā'tyatasaṁbhramāt namonārāyaṇāyeti jagādoṅkārapūrvakam
Seeing that fallen flower, that king, in great alarm, exclaimed "Om Namo Narayanaya."
Verse 52 (padma.7.10.52)
nārāyaṇāyeti vākyātsarvāṇi pātakāni ca svarṇapuṣpapradānena tasya naṣṭāni bhūbhujaḥ
By that word "Narayanaya," and by that offering of the golden-hued flower, all the sins of that king were destroyed.
Verse 53 (padma.7.10.53)
grāmīṇā atha sarve'pi samāgatyātidurjaye tasyāmeva niśāyāṁ taṁ jaghnurveśyāgṛhe sthitam
Just then, all the people of the village, arriving there, in that very night, most cruelly, slew him as he stood there in the courtesan's house.
Verse 54 (padma.7.10.54)
netuṁ tamatha bhūpālaṁ sarvapātakināṁ varam kiṁkarānpreṣayāmāsa kruddho vaivasvato bhṛśam
To lead away that king, foremost among sinners, Yama, greatly enraged, sent forth his own servants.
Verse 55 (padma.7.10.55)
tenājñaptāstato dūtāḥ pāśamudgarapāṇayaḥ ativegātsamāyātāḥ krodhasaṁraktalocanāḥ
By his command, nooses and clubs in hand, with great speed, their eyes red with fury, those messengers came there.
Verse 56 (padma.7.10.56)
udyamaṁ cakrire netuṁ yamadūtāḥ svamālayam tato nārāyaṇapreṣyāḥ śaṅkhacakragadādharāḥ
The messengers of Yama made ready to lead him toward their own abode. Then, bearing conch, discus, and mace,
Verse 57 (padma.7.10.57)
āyātā garuḍārūḍhāstaṁ netuṁ pṛthivīpatim pāśe niyaṁtritaṁ dṛṣṭvā taṁ bhūpaṁ viṣṇukiṁkarāḥ
the servants of Narayana, mounted upon Garuda, came to lead away that king. Seeing him bound with a noose, the messengers of Vishnu,
Verse 58 (padma.7.10.58)
jaghnuścakrairgadābhiśca yamadūtānmahābalāḥ samāropya rathe divye śaṁkhāndadhmuranuttamān
of great strength, struck down the messengers of Yama with discuses and maces, and, seating him upon a divine chariot, sounded their supreme conches.
Verse 59 (padma.7.10.59)
tathā rājā rathārūḍhastulasīmālyabhūṣitaḥ pītakauśeyavāsāśca svarṇālaṁkārabhūṣitaḥ
Then that king, mounted upon the chariot, adorned with a garland of tulasi, clad in yellow silk, decked with golden ornaments,
Verse 60 (padma.7.10.60)
