Kriya Khanda (Kriyayogasara) · Chapter 11
The Rite of Worshipping Hari
Verse 1 (padma.7.11.1)
vyāsa uvāca- jaimine vidhinā yena pūjitavyo hariḥ sadā tamahaṁ vacmi viprarṣe śṛṇu vatsa samāhitaḥ
Vyasa said: O Jaimini, I shall tell the rite by which Hari should always be worshipped; O sage among brahmins, O child, listen with attention.
Verse 2 (padma.7.11.2)
kalya utthāya paryaṁkādgṛhītvā pātramaṁbhasām bahirdeśaṁ vrajetprājñaḥ śīrṣamācchādya vāsasā
Rising from bed at dawn, taking a vessel of water, the wise man should go outdoors, his head covered with a cloth.
Verse 3 (padma.7.11.3)
tatrodīcyāṁ diśi maunī yajñasūtrāṇi karṇayoḥ kṛtvopaviṣṭaḥ prājñastu malamūtraṁ visarjayet
There, facing north, remaining silent, looping the sacred thread over the ears, sitting down, the wise person should relieve himself.
Verse 4 (padma.7.11.4)
devatāyatane mārge goṣṭheṣu catvareṣu ca rathyāyāṁ kṛṣṭabhūmau ca darbhamūle tathāṁgaṇe
In a temple, on a road, in cowsheds, at crossroads, in a lane, in ploughed land, at the root of sacred grass, in a courtyard,
Verse 5 (padma.7.11.5)
taṭinī puline caittyavṛkṣamūle tathā vane taḍāgavāpīgarbheṣu malamūtraṁ ca na tyajet
on a river's bank, on the sand, at the root of a sacred tree, in a forest, within a tank or a step-well — in all these places one should not relieve oneself.
Verse 6 (padma.7.11.6)
raviṁ caṁdramasaṁ caiva dvijāngāśca diśo daśa malamūtraṁ tyajedyāvattāvatprājño na paśyati
The wise person should not relieve himself while the sun, the moon, brahmins, cows, and the ten directions remain visible.
Verse 7 (padma.7.11.7)
khanitāṁ mūṣikādyaiśca bilābhyaṁtaravartinīm phālakṛṣṭāṁ mṛdaṁ caiva na gṛhṇīyācchaucahetave
Earth dug through by mice and other creatures into their burrows, and earth turned by the plough, should not be taken for the purification rite.
Verse 8 (padma.7.11.8)
jalājjalaṁ samānīya śaucaṁ kuryādvicakṣaṇaḥ pādaṁ jaleṣu vai datvā na śaucaṁ kurute budhaḥ
The discerning man should bring water for purification separately; the wise man does not perform the purification rite while standing with his feet in the water.
Verse 9 (padma.7.11.9)
dakṣiṇābhimukho rātrau kuryātprājño bahiḥkriyām śiraḥ prāvṛtya vastreṇa tataḥ śaucaṁ samācaret
At night, facing south, the wise person should perform his outdoor need, his head covered with a cloth, and then perform the purification rite.
Verse 10 (padma.7.11.10)
mṛttikaikā pradātavyā liṁge tisrastu vai gude sapta savye kare prājñairhastayorubhayordaśa
On the genitals once, on the anus three times, wise men should apply earth seven times to the left hand, and ten times to both hands together.
Verse 11 (padma.7.11.11)
pādayoḥ ṣaṭpradātavyā mṛttikā ca vicakṣaṇaiḥ kṛtaśaucakriyaḥ prājñaḥ kuryāddaṁtasya dhāvanam
On the feet six times, the wise should apply earth. Having completed the purification rite, the wise person should clean his teeth.
Verse 12 (padma.7.11.12)
jihvapāmārjanaṁ caiva daśanācchādanādibhiḥ dakṣiṇābhimukho bhūtvā paścimābhimukhastathā
Cleaning the tongue and covering the teeth and such, facing south, or facing west,
Verse 13 (padma.7.11.13)
na daṁtadhāvanaṁ kuryātkuryāccennārakī bhavet madhyamānāmikābhyāṁ ca vṛddhāṁguṣṭhena ca dvija
one should not clean the teeth; should he do so, he becomes a denizen of hell. O brahmin, with the middle and ring fingers and the thumb,
Verse 14 (padma.7.11.14)
daṁtasya dhāvanaṁ kuryānna tarjanyā kadācana aśvatthavaṭavṛkṣāṇāṁ dhātryā kaithikayā budhaḥ
the cleaning of teeth should be done, never with the forefinger. With the wood of the pipal, the banyan, the amalaka, or the wood-apple tree,
Verse 15 (padma.7.11.15)
na daṁtadhāvanaṁ kuryāttatheṁdrasyasurasya ca nityaṁ kriyāphalaṁ tasya sarvameva vinaśyati
the wise man should clean his teeth, and never with the wood of Indra's tree (the intoxicant tree); should he do so, the entire fruit of his daily rites is destroyed.
Verse 16 (padma.7.11.16)
yaḥ snānasamaye kuryājjaimine daṁtadhāvanam nirāśāḥ pitaro yāṁti tasya devāḥ surarṣayaḥ
O Jaimini, whoever cleans his teeth at the time of bathing — his ancestors return in despair, and so too do the gods and the divine seers.
Verse 17 (padma.7.11.17)
daṁtasya dhāvanaṁ kuryādyo madhyāhnāparāhṇayoḥ tasya pūjāṁ na gṛhṇaṁti devatāḥ pitaro jalam
Whoever cleans his teeth at midday or in the afternoon — his worship and his water the gods and ancestors do not accept.
Verse 18 (padma.7.11.18)
Whoever cleans his teeth in a lake at the time of bathing should be reckoned as though a Chandala, until he beholds the Ganga.
Verse 19 (padma.7.11.19)
bhagavatyudite sūrye yaḥ kuryāddaṁtadhāvanam taddaṁtakāṣṭhaṁ pitaro bhuktvā gacchaṁti duḥkhinaḥ
Once the Lord Sun has risen, whoever cleans his teeth — that tooth-stick's very leavings, eaten, send the ancestors away in sorrow.
Verse 20 (padma.7.11.20)
upavāsadine vipra pitṛśrāddhadine tathā na tatphalamavāpnoti daṁtadhāvanakṛnnaraḥ
O brahmin, on a fasting day, and on the day of the ancestral shraddha, whoever cleans his teeth does not attain that fruit.
Verse 21 (padma.7.11.21)
prabhāte mārjayeddaṁtānvāsasā rasanāṁ tathā kuryāddvādaśa vipreṁdra kallolāni jalairbudhaḥ
At dawn the teeth and tongue should be wiped with a cloth. O lord of brahmins, the wise person should rinse the mouth with water twelve times.
Verse 22 (padma.7.11.22)
upavāse pitṛśrāddhe vidhinā'nena jaimine daṁtadhāvanakṛnmartyaḥ saṁpūrṇaṁ labhate phalam
O Jaimini, on a fast and at the ancestral shraddha, whoever cleans his teeth by this rite attains the complete fruit.
Verse 23 (padma.7.11.23)
anena vidhinā kṛtvā dīrghadarśī bahiḥ kriyām tato nijagṛhaṁ gatvā rātrivastraṁ parityajet
Having performed the outdoor need by this rite, the far-sighted person should go to his own home and set aside his night-garments.
Verse 24 (padma.7.11.24)
tato devagṛhadvāre copaviṣṭo budhaḥ śuciḥ smarennārāyaṇaṁ devamanaṁtaṁ parameśvaram
Then, sitting at the door of the temple, the pure and wise person should remember the god Narayana, the infinite Supreme Lord.
Verse 25 (padma.7.11.25)
rāmaśyāmatano viṣṇo nārāyaṇa dayāmaya janārdana jagaddhāma pāpaṁ me hara keśava
O Rama-formed, O dark-bodied Vishnu, O Narayana, O compassionate one, O Janardana, O abode of the universe, O Keshava, take away my sin.
Verse 26 (padma.7.11.26)
pītāṁbaradharānaṁta padmanābha jaganmaya vāmana praṇatasyeśa vibho tvaṁ śaraṇaṁ bhava
O wearer of yellow garments, O infinite one, O lotus-navelled one, O one who pervades the universe, O Vamana, O mighty one, become the refuge of me, who takes shelter in you.
Verse 27 (padma.7.11.27)
dāmodara yaduśreṣṭha śrīkṛṣṇa karuṇārṇava kamalekṣaṇa deveṁdra vāsudeva kṛpāṁ kuru
O Damodara, O best of the Yadus, O Sri Krishna, O ocean of compassion, O lotus-eyed one, O lord of gods, O Vasudeva, show me your grace.
Verse 28 (padma.7.11.28)
garuḍadhvaja goviṁda viśvaṁbhara gadādhara śaṁkhapāṇe cakrapāṇe padmahasta harāpadaḥ
O bearer of the Garuda banner, O Govinda, O sustainer of the universe, O mace-bearer, O conch-in-hand, O discus-in-hand, O lotus-in-hand, take away calamity.
Verse 29 (padma.7.11.29)
lakṣmīvilāsa vaikuṁṭha hṛṣīkeśa surottama puruṣottama kaṁsāre kaiṭabhāre bhayaṁ hara
O delight of Lakshmi, O dweller in Vaikuntha, O lord of the senses, O best of gods, O supreme Being, O foe of Kamsa, O foe of Kaitabha, take away fear.
Verse 30 (padma.7.11.30)
śrīpate śrīdhara vibho śrīda śrīkara mādhava paraṁbrahma paraṁdhāma śaraṇaṁ me bhavāvyaya
O lord of Sri, O bearer of Sri, O mighty one, O giver of Sri, O bestower of Sri, O Madhava, O supreme Brahman, O supreme abode, imperishable one, become my refuge.
Verse 31 (padma.7.11.31)
itthaṁ kṛtvā dvijaśreṣṭha śrīviṣṇusmaraṇaṁ budhaḥ baddhāṁjaliriti brūte praviśya nilayaṁ gataḥ
O best of the twice-born, having thus remembered Sri Vishnu, the wise person should speak this, joining his palms, and then enter the house.
Verse 32 (padma.7.11.32)
īśvara śrīpate kṛṣṇa devakīnaṁdana prabho nidrāṁ muṁca jagannātha prabhātasamayo'bhavat
O Lord, O husband of Sri, O Krishna, O son of Devaki, O Lord, abandon your sleep, O Lord of the universe — the hour of dawn has come.
Verse 33 (padma.7.11.33)
athosthitamiva prājñaḥ paryaṁke devakīsutam nidrāṁ tyaktvā salakṣmīkaṁ ciṁtayennija cetasā
Then, as though the son of Devaki had risen from his couch, the wise person, casting off his own sleep, should hold him in mind together with Lakshmi.
Verse 34 (padma.7.11.34)
tataḥ kṛtacchadaṁ divyaṁ pātraṁ ca jalapūritam mukhaprakṣālanārthāya dadyātkṛṣṇāya vaiṣṇavaḥ
Then, filling a covered divine vessel with water, the Vaishnava should offer it to Krishna for the washing of the face.
Verse 35 (padma.7.11.35)
īśvaraṁ vartanārthāya sevaṁte sevakā yathā tathaiva matimaṁtopi sevaṁte parameśvaram
Just as servants serve their master for the sake of their own livelihood, so too the wise serve the Supreme Lord.
Verse 36 (padma.7.11.36)
yastu sevakarūpeṇa sevate jagadīśvaram acireṇaiva viprarṣe tasya sidhyati vāṁchitam
Whoever, in the manner of a servant, serves the Lord of the universe, O sage among brahmins, his desire is swiftly accomplished.
Verse 37 (padma.7.11.37)
yatheśvarasya sabhayāḥ sevāṁ kurvaṁti ceṭakāḥ prājñāstathaiva sevaṁte sarvadaiva hariṁ prabhum
Just as fearful servants serve their own master, so too the wise ever serve the Lord Hari.
Verse 38 (padma.7.11.38)
nijecchayānayā viṣṇuṁ nirbhayaḥ pūjayennaraḥ kusevakaḥ sa evāsti tadā nahi bhaveddvija
Whatever man worships Vishnu of his own accord, without fear, he is truly but a poor servant — he does not then become a true servant, O brahmin.
Verse 39 (padma.7.11.39)
ataeva dvijaśreṣṭha tvarayā kamalāpateḥ karttavyā sarvadā sevā puṁsā kaivalyamicchunā
Therefore, O best of the twice-born, whatever person desires liberation should always, with eagerness, serve the Lord of Lakshmi.
Verse 40 (padma.7.11.40)
nirmālyaṁ rātrivastraṁ ca gaṁdhaṁ paryuṣitaṁ tathā hareruttārayedaṁgātprabhāte vaiṣṇavo janaḥ
The offered flowers, the night-garments, and the stale fragrance the Vaishnava should remove from Hari's body at dawn.
Verse 41 (padma.7.11.41)
tato devālaye tasminsvayameva hi mārjayet kuryācchanaiḥśanaiḥ prājñaḥ saṁmārjanyā pariṣkriyām
Then, in that temple, he should himself sweep it clean; the wise person should perform the sweeping work slowly, little by little.
Verse 42 (padma.7.11.42)
yāvaṁto nilayāttasmādgacchaṁti reṇavo bahiḥ tāvanmanvaṁtaraśataṁ tiṣṭhedviṣṇugṛhe naraḥ
For as many dust-motes as go out from that house, for that many hundred manvantaras a man dwells in the house of Vishnu.
Verse 43 (padma.7.11.43)
yastu saṁmārjanaṁ kuryādbrahmahāpi harergṛhe sopi yāti paraṁ dhāma kimanyairbahubhāṣitaiḥ
Whoever sweeps the house of Hari, even a slayer of a brahmin goes to the supreme abode — what more, indeed, need be said?
Verse 44 (padma.7.11.44)
tathopalepanaṁ kuryādūrṇakairgomayairdvija tasminviṣṇugṛhe prājñaḥ smarennārāyaṇaṁ prabhum
Then, O brahmin, it should be plastered with wool and cow-dung. In that house of Vishnu, the wise person should remember the Lord Narayana.
Verse 45 (padma.7.11.45)
yastūpalepanaṁ kuryātkeśavasya ca maṁdire tasya puṇyamahaṁ vacmi saṁkṣepācchṛṇu jaimine
Whoever plasters the temple of Keshava, O Jaimini, his merit I now declare — hear it in brief.
Verse 46 (padma.7.11.46)
rajāṁsi tatra yāvaṁti vinaśyaṁti dvijottama tāvatkalpasahasrāṇi tiṣṭhedviṣṇugṛhe sukhī
O best of the twice-born, for as many dust-motes as are destroyed there, for that many thousand kalpas he happily dwells in the house of Vishnu.
Verse 47 (padma.7.11.47)
saṁmārjanaṁ viṣṇugṛhe janaḥ kṛtvopalepanam labhate paramaṁ dhāma kiṁ pūjāphalavitprabhoḥ
Whatever person, sweeping and plastering the house of Vishnu, attains the supreme abode — what then need be said of a devotee who truly knows the fruit of worship?
Verse 48 (padma.7.11.48)
deva rāja virodhena na śaknoti yadā svayam tadā viṣṇugṛhe cāpi dharmapatnīṁ niyojayet
When, due to conflict with god and king both, one is unable to do this oneself, one should appoint one's own lawful wife to the service of Vishnu's house.
Verse 49 (padma.7.11.49)
athavā tanayaṁ bhaktaṁ sucaritraṁ tathātmanaḥ bhrātaraṁ bhaginīṁ vāpi devāgāre niyojayet
Or one should appoint one's own devout and well-conducted son, or a brother or sister, to the service of the temple.
Verse 50 (padma.7.11.50)
hareḥ saparyāvastūni saptadhā śuddhavāribhiḥ prakṣālayettridhā vāpi svayamevātiyatnataḥ
The materials for Hari's worship should be washed with pure water seven times, or by oneself, with great care, three times.
Verse 51 (padma.7.11.51)
amlena tāmrapātrāṇi kāṁsyapātrāṇi bhasmanā vahninā lohapātrāṇi śudhyaṁti nātra saṁśayaḥ
By an acidic substance, copper vessels; by ash, bronze vessels; and by fire, iron vessels are purified — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 52 (padma.7.11.52)
dhanāḍhyo lohapātrasthairyaḥ snāpayati vāribhiḥ nārāyaṇaṁ jagannāthaṁ tasya tuṣṭo na keśavaḥ
One who, though wealthy, still bathes the Lord of the universe, Narayana, with water held in iron vessels — is Keshava not thereby pleased with him?
Verse 53 (padma.7.11.53)
ajñānādvāpi cettarhi gaṁgāsnānena śuddhyati saṁpadi brāhmaṇaśreṣṭha karttavyo niyamaḥ sadā
If this happens even out of ignorance, it is purified by bathing in the Ganga. O best of brahmins, in times of prosperity one should always keep the prescribed rule.
Verse 54 (padma.7.11.54)
vipattyāṁ niyamo nāsti śāstreṣviti viniścayaḥ yatnātprakṣālitaḥ śaṅkho yadā bhūmiṁ spṛśetpunaḥ
In adversity there is no such rule — this is settled in the scriptures. A carefully washed conch, if it should touch the ground again,
Verse 55 (padma.7.11.55)
tadā sa śaṅkho vipreṁdra śatadhautena śudhyati itthaṁ prakṣālya yatnena pūjādravyāṇi cakriṇaḥ
then, O lord of brahmins, that conch is purified by being washed a hundred times. Having thus carefully washed the discus-bearer's worship materials,
Verse 56 (padma.7.11.56)
gṛhītvā snānavastūni snānārthaṁ sarasīṁ vrajet akṛtvā snānakarmāṇi gṛhamāyāti yaḥ punaḥ
taking the materials for bathing, one should go toward the lake to bathe. Whoever returns home without performing the act of bathing,
Verse 57 (padma.7.11.57)
tasmindine pitṛgaṇastasya nāpnoti tarpaṇam snānārthaṁ bhojanārthaṁ vā gacchato vighnakṛdbhavet
on that day his ancestors do not receive the libation; and an obstacle arises for him in going for the bath or for the meal.
Verse 58 (padma.7.11.58)
yastu mohāddvijaśreṣṭha sa nūnaṁ nārakī bhavet snānārthaṁ sarasīṁ gatvā malamūtraṁ karoti yaḥ
O best of the twice-born, whoever does this out of delusion surely becomes a denizen of hell. Whoever, going to a lake for a bath, relieves himself there,
Verse 59 (padma.7.11.59)
pitarastasya viṇvamūtrabhojinaḥ syurna saṁśayaḥ tataḥ kṛtvā vidhānena snānaṁ ca tarpaṇādikam
his ancestors become eaters of excrement and urine — of this there is no doubt. Then, having performed the bathing and libation and the rest by due rite,

na laṁghayetsomasūtraṁ dhīmāñśaṁbhupradakṣiṇe laṁghayitvā yadā vipra sā pūjā niṣphalā bhavet
The wise should not cross the Soma-line (the water-outlet channel) while circumambulating Shiva. O brahmin, crossing it renders that worship fruitless.
Verse 121 (padma.7.11.121)
pradakṣiṇā kāratayā vāraikaṁ yo hariṁ vrajet janmajanmani vipreṁdra sārvabhaumo bhaveddhruvam
Whoever, even once, goes near Hari in the spirit of circumambulation, he surely becomes an emperor, birth after birth, O lord of brahmins.
Verse 122 (padma.7.11.122)
yastu vāradvayaṁ vipra kuryādviṣṇupradakṣiṇām aiṁdraṁ padamavāpnoti tridinenātra saṁśayaḥ
O brahmin, whoever performs the circumambulation of Vishnu twice, he attains the rank of Indra within three days — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 123 (padma.7.11.123)
viṣṇupradakṣiṇaṁ yastu kuryādvāradvayaṁ janaḥ vimuktaḥ sakalaiḥ pāpaiḥ praviśenmādhavīṁ tanum
Whatever man circumambulates Vishnu twice, he, freed of every sin, enters a body equal to Lakshmi's own.
Verse 124 (padma.7.11.124)
bhrāmayetsodakaṁ śaṅkhaṁ keśavopari jaimine aṁte devālayaṁ gatvā sabhavetsuravaṁditaḥ
O Jaimini, a water-filled conch should be waved over Keshava. In the end, going to the temple, he becomes revered by the gods.
Verse 125 (padma.7.11.125)
praṇameddaṁḍavadbhūmau saptadhā yastu keśavam pātakaṁ taccharīrasthaṁ bhasmībhavati tatkṣaṇāt
Whoever bows to Keshava full-length upon the ground seven times, the sin dwelling in his body is reduced to ashes in that very instant.
Verse 126 (padma.7.11.126)
śirasyaṁjalimādhāya praṇamedyo janārdanam tasmai lakṣmīpatirviṣṇurdadāti paramaṁ padam
Whoever, joining his palms above his head, bows to Janardana, to him the Lord of Lakshmi, Vishnu, grants the supreme abode.
Verse 127 (padma.7.11.127)
bhūmau nipātya sarvāṁgaṁ hariṁ praṇamatāṁ nṛṇām puṇyaprabhāvaṁ viprarṣe vadato me niśāmaya
The power of the merit of men who bow to Hari, casting their whole body upon the ground — hear it from me, O sage among brahmins, as I now declare it.
Verse 128 (padma.7.11.128)
yāvadbhūreṇubhirnṛṇāṁ bhūṣitaṁ syātkalevaram tāvatkalpasahasrāṇi tiṣṭhaṁti harisaṁnidhau
For as long as men's bodies remain adorned with the dust of the earth, for that many thousand kalpas they remain in Hari's own presence.
Verse 129 (padma.7.11.129)
tataḥ keśavanirmālyaṁ vaiṣṇavebhyaḥ pradīyate vaiṣṇavāṁstānpravakṣyāmi śṛṇu sattama jaimine
Then Keshava's offered flowers are given to Vaishnavas. Those Vaishnavas I shall now name, O best one, Jaimini, listen.
Verse 130 (padma.7.11.130)
śukaḥ sūtastathā vyāso nāradaḥ kapilo muniḥ prahlādaścāṁbarīṣaśca tathākrūroddhavāvapi
Shuka, Suta, and Vyasa, Narada, the sage Kapila, Prahlada and Ambarisha, and Akrura and Uddhava too,
Verse 131 (padma.7.11.131)
bibhīṣaṇo hanūmāṁśca tathaivānye'pi vaiṣṇavāḥ nirmālyaṁ vāsudevasya gṛhṇaṁtu sarvakāmadam
Vibhishana and Hanuman, and other Vaishnavas likewise — let them take Vasudeva's own offered flowers, giver of every desire.
Verse 132 (padma.7.11.132)
ityuktvā viṣṇunirmālyaṁ nikṣipedbhuvi vaiṣṇavaḥ tatastu harinirmālyaṁ svayaṁ gṛhṇāti bhaktitaḥ
Having said this, the Vaishnava should place Vishnu's offered flowers upon the ground. Then he should himself take up Hari's offered flowers with devotion.
Verse 133 (padma.7.11.133)
mastake dṛśyate yasya harinirmālyamuttamam sa vijñeyo dvijaśreṣṭha sākṣādeva hariḥ svayam
Whoever's head bears the excellent offered flowers of Hari, O best of the twice-born, should be recognized as Hari himself.
Verse 134 (padma.7.11.134)
durlabhaṁ viṣṇunaivedyaṁ nirmālyaṁ pāpanāśanam gṛhṇaṁti tridaśāḥ sarve manuṣyāṇāṁ ca kā kathā
Vishnu's rare offered food, his sin-destroying offered flowers, are received by every host of gods — what then need be said of men?
Verse 135 (padma.7.11.135)
jaimine tulasīpatraṁ yastu jighrati vaiṣṇavaḥ tasya dehāṁtarasthaṁ hi sarvaṁ pāpaṁ vinaśyati
O Jaimini, whatever Vaishnava smells a tulasi leaf, all the sin dwelling in his body is destroyed.
Verse 136 (padma.7.11.136)
tulasīpatragaṁdhastu praviśedyasya nāsikām āpadastaccharīrasthāḥ sadyo gacchaṁti saṁkṣayam
Whoever's nostrils the fragrance of the tulasi leaf enters, every calamity dwelling in his body swiftly comes to naught.
Verse 137 (padma.7.11.137)
tulasīchadanaghrāṇamāghrāya yo'bhinaṁdati tasyālaye bhavennityamānaṁdo dvijasattama
Whoever, having smelled the fragrance of a tulasi leaf, delights in it, O best of the twice-born, in his home joy ever abides.
Verse 138 (padma.7.11.138)
stavaiḥ stutvā jagannāthaṁ kamalāpriyamacyutam kṛtāṁjalistataḥ prājña imaṁ maṁtramudīrayet
Having praised, with hymns, Achyuta, Lord of the universe, dear to Lakshmi, the wise person, with joined palms, should then speak this mantra.
Verse 139 (padma.7.11.139)
nārāyaṇa jagadrūpa gaccha dhāma jagatpate gaccha deva nijasthānaṁ prasanno bhava sarvadā
O Narayana, O form of the universe, O lord of the universe, go to your own abode. O god, go to your own place, be ever gracious.
Verse 140 (padma.7.11.140)
yeyaṁ svaśaktyā deveṁdra tava pūjā kṛtā mayā acchidrāstu jagannātha tvatprasādājjaganmaya
Whatever worship of you I have performed, according to my own power, O lord of gods, O Lord of the universe, may it be free of flaw, by your grace, O one who pervades the universe.
Verse 141 (padma.7.11.141)
tataḥ pādodakaṁ prājño mahāviṣṇoḥ parātmanaḥ samastapātakadhvaṁsi gṛhṇīyādbhaktibhāvataḥ
Then the wise person should take up, with devout feeling, the water from the feet of that supreme Self, Maha-Vishnu, destroyer of every sin.
Verse 142 (padma.7.11.142)
kaṇamātraṁ vahedyastu viṣṇoḥ pādodakaṁ śubham sa snātaḥ sarvatīrtheṣu jaimine satyamucyate
Whoever bears upon his head even a single droplet of Vishnu's auspicious foot-water, O Jaimini, he has bathed in every sacred ford — this is spoken as truth.
Verse 143 (padma.7.11.143)
spṛśetpādodakaṁ viṣṇorgaṁgāsnānaphalaṁ bhavet gāṁgeyaṁ salilaṁ vipra viṣṇupādodakaṁ yataḥ
Touching Vishnu's foot-water grants the fruit of bathing in the Ganga; for, O brahmin, the Ganga's own water is itself Vishnu's foot-water.
Verse 144 (padma.7.11.144)
akālamaraṇaṁ nāsti nāsti vyādhibhayaṁ tathā yaḥ spṛśetpādasalilaṁ keśavasya mahātmanaḥ
Whoever touches the foot-water of that great being, Keshava, for him there is neither untimely death, nor fear of disease.
Verse 145 (padma.7.11.145)
pāpavyādhivināśārthaṁ viṣṇupādodakauṣadham pāpino'pi narāste ca pibaṁtu prativāsaram
For the destruction of sin and disease, Vishnu's own foot-water is the medicine; even sinful men should drink it every day.
Verse 146 (padma.7.11.146)
viṣṇupādodakaṁ vipra yaḥ pibedvaiṣṇavo janaḥ pātakaṁ taccharīrasthaṁ kṣaṇādeva tu naśyati
O brahmin, whatever Vaishnava drinks Vishnu's foot-water, the sin dwelling in his body is destroyed in an instant.
Verse 147 (padma.7.11.147)
yathauṣadhena dehasthaṁ hanyate dehino bhṛśam tathaiva pātakaṁ sarvaṁ viṣṇupādodakena ca
Just as, by medicine, a disease dwelling in an embodied being's body is swiftly destroyed, so too, by Vishnu's foot-water, every sin is destroyed.
Verse 148 (padma.7.11.148)
viṣṇupādodakaṁ śuddhaṁ tulasīpatrasaṁyutam yo vahecchirasā vipra tasya puṇyaṁ vadāmyaham
O brahmin, whoever bears upon his head Vishnu's pure foot-water together with a tulasi leaf, his merit I now declare.
Verse 149 (padma.7.11.149)
brahmahatyādibhiḥ pāpairvimukto viṣṇurūpadhṛk aṁte viṣṇupuraṁ gatvā viṣṇunā saha modate
Freed of sins beginning with the killing of a brahmin, taking on Vishnu's very form, at the end going to Vishnu's abode, he rejoices there together with Vishnu.
Verse 150 (padma.7.11.150)
merupramāṇa hemāni datvā bhavati yatphalam viṣṇupādodakaṁ spṛṣṭvā tadbhavedadhikaṁ phalam
The fruit that comes from giving gold equal in weight to Mount Meru, from touching Vishnu's foot-water an even greater fruit is gained.
Verse 151 (padma.7.11.151)
aśvakoṭipradānena tatphalaṁ prāpyate janaiḥ saptadvīpāṁ mahīṁ datvā dvijebhyo yatphalaṁ labhet
The fruit that people gain from the gift of tens of millions of horses, the fruit gained from giving the earth, with its seven continents, to brahmins,
Verse 152 (padma.7.11.152)
tatphalaṁ labhate martyo viṣṇupādodakaṁ spṛśan aśvamedhasahasrāṇi kṛtvā bhavati yatphalam
that fruit a mortal attains merely by touching Vishnu's foot-water. The fruit gained by performing thousands of Ashvamedha sacrifices,
Verse 153 (padma.7.11.153)
viṣṇupādodakaṁ spṛṣṭvā tadbhavedadhikaṁ phalam dīrghikāśatadānena yatpuṇyaṁ parikīrtitam
from touching Vishnu's foot-water an even greater fruit is gained. The merit declared for the gift of a hundred tanks,
Verse 154 (padma.7.11.154)
tasmādapyadhikaṁ puṇyaṁ labhetpādodakaṁ spṛśan bahunātra kimuktena saṁkṣepāducyate mayā
an even greater merit is gained by touching that foot-water. What need to say more here? I shall now speak briefly —
Verse 155 (padma.7.11.155)
viṣṇupādodakasparśānmukto bhavati mānavaḥ bhūyobhūyopi vipreṁdra sudṛḍhaṁ kathyate mayā
By the touch of Vishnu's foot-water a man is liberated. O lord of brahmins, I say this firmly, again and again,
Verse 156 (padma.7.11.156)
punarna labhate janma spṛśanpādodakaṁ hareḥ viṣṇunaivedyaśeṣaṁ yaḥ sarvapāpavināśanam
whoever touches Hari's foot-water is not born again. The remainder of Vishnu's own offered food, destroyer of every sin,
Verse 157 (padma.7.11.157)
yo'śnāti bhaktibhāvena sa gacchetparamaṁ padam durlabhaṁ viṣṇunaivedya bhuṁjate dvijasattama
whoever eats it with devout feeling, he goes to the supreme abode. O best of the twice-born, whoever partakes of Vishnu's rare offered food,
Verse 158 (padma.7.11.158)
dehaṁ tyajati pāpāni brahmahatyāmukhānyapi bhuṁjato harinaivedyaṁ dāsīva vaśagā bhavet
casts off from his body even sins such as the killing of a brahmin. For one who eats Hari's own offered food, subject to him as though a handmaid,
Verse 159 (padma.7.11.159)
muktibhūmiḥ suraśreṣṭha daivatairapi durlabhā saṁpūjya kamalākāṁtaṁ kiṁcinnaivedyamatyajan
O best of gods, even the very ground of liberation becomes so, hard to attain even for the gods. Worshipping the beloved of Kamala, and giving up not even a portion of the offered food to others,
Verse 160 (padma.7.11.160)
acireṇaiva taṁ viṣṇurnayati svāṁ tanuṁ prati naivedyasya mahāviṣṇorguṇaṁ kiṁ kathayāmyaham
him Vishnu swiftly leads toward a state equal to his own very body. Of the merit of Maha-Vishnu's offered food, what indeed shall I say,
Verse 161 (padma.7.11.161)
yadbhuṁjataḥ keśavo'pi syādadhīno dvija prabho anena vidhinā vipra pratimāse janārdanam
O lord brahmin, by partaking of which even Keshava becomes subject? By this rite, O brahmin, whoever worships Janardana each month,
Verse 162 (padma.7.11.162)
vidhihīnāmapi śreṣṭhāṁ pūjāṁ śrīkamalāpateḥ yaḥ kuryādbhaktibhāvena so'pi syātkeśavapriyaḥ
even without the full rite, whatever person performs excellent worship of the Lord of Lakshmi with devout feeling, he too becomes dear to Keshava.
Verse 163 (padma.7.11.163)
vidhijño vidhinā viṣṇumabhyarcya yatphalaṁ labhet yathoktavidhinā vipra naivedyairbahubhiḥ prabho
The fruit the ritual-knower attains by worshipping Vishnu by due rite, O lord brahmin — even though worshipped by prescribed rite with many offerings,
Verse 164 (padma.7.11.164)
pūjito'pi na tuṣṭaḥ syādyadi bhaktirna tiṣṭhati yasya vai yāvatī bhaktirdevadeve janārdane
if devotion does not endure, he is not thereby contented. Whatever degree of devotion one has toward the God of gods, Janardana,
Verse 165 (padma.7.11.165)
tāvadeva phalāvāptistasya nāstyatra saṁśayaḥ abhaktyāyā hareḥ pūjā kriyate bhuvi mānavaiḥ
just that much fruit he receives — of this there is no doubt. Whatever worship of Hari is performed upon this earth by men without devotion,
Verse 166 (padma.7.11.166)
sā pūjā brāhmaṇaśreṣṭha pūjākāle bhavetkila jñānamūlaṁ harerbhaktirbhaktimūlaṁ jagatpateḥ
O best of brahmins, that worship, even at the very moment of worship, comes to nothing. Devotion to Hari alone is the root of knowledge, devotion to the Lord of the universe alone is the root.
Verse 167 (padma.7.11.167)
pūjā mokṣadrumotpattau mūlamārādhanaṁ hareḥ alpamātramapi prājña śraddhayā kurute hi yat
In the birth of the tree that is liberation, the root is worship, the adoration of Hari. Whatever the wise person does, even ever so little, with faith,
Verse 168 (padma.7.11.168)
tadakṣayaṁ bhavetsarvaṁ śraddhāyuktākhilā kriyā bhaktyā yaḥ pūjayedviṣṇuṁ vārimātramapi dvija
all of it becomes imperishable — any act joined with faith becomes imperishable. Whoever worships Vishnu with devotion, even with water alone, O brahmin,
Verse 169 (padma.7.11.169)
saṁsthānaṁ labhate viṣṇoryato bhaktavaśo hariḥ
he attains Vishnu's own abode, since Hari is subject to his devotee.
Verse 170 (padma.7.11.170)
asārametadbhuvanaṁ samastaṁ sāraṁ hareḥ pūjanameva vipra tasmānmanuṣyo nijamaṁgalaiṣī bhaktyā yajetkṛṣṇamanaṁtamūrtim
This entire universe is without substance; the worship of Hari alone, O brahmin, is its very substance. Therefore let the man who desires his own good worship Krishna, of infinite form, with devotion.
