Verse 42 (padma.7.13.42)

na bhādre ketakīpuṣpaiḥ pūjitavyo janārdanaḥ yato bhādrapademāsi ketakī syātsurā samā

In Bhadrapada, Janardana should not be worshipped with ketaki flowers, since in the month of Bhadrapada the ketaki is deemed as though liquor (impure).

Verse 43 (padma.7.13.43)

Verse 44 (padma.7.13.44)

bhādre māsi dvijaśreṣṭha haraye tālapiṣṭakam saghṛtaṁ vaiṣṇavo dadyātkevalaprāptihetave

O best of brahmins, in the month of Bhadrapada the Vaishnava should offer to Hari palm-flour cakes together with ghee, for the attainment of liberation itself.

Verse 46 (padma.7.13.46)

māsi bhādrapade vipra na kuryācchākabhakṣaṇam na rātrau bhojanaṁ kuryānmumukṣurvaiṣṇavo janaḥ

O brahmin, in the month of Bhadrapada, leafy vegetables should not be eaten; the Vaishnava who desires liberation should not eat at night either.

Verse 47 (padma.7.13.47)

āśvine māsi viprendra keśavaṁ kleśanāśanam yattoyaṁ dīyate vipra pūrvāhṇe haraye janaiḥ

O lord of brahmins, in the month of Ashvina, to Keshava, destroyer of affliction — O brahmin, the water that people offer to Hari in the forenoon,

Verse 48 (padma.7.13.48)

pīyūṣamiva tattoyaṁ gṛhṇāti kamalāpatiḥ madhyāhne dīyate yacca tattoyaṁ cakrapāṇaye

that water the Lord of Lakshmi receives as though it were nectar. The water given at midday to the discus-bearer,

Verse 49 (padma.7.13.49)

tattoyamiva vettavyaṁ tadgṛhṇāti dvijottama aparāhṇe ca yattoyaṁ govindāya pradīyate

O best of the twice-born, that water should be regarded as merely ordinary water — that he does still receive. The water offered to Govinda in the afternoon,

Verse 50 (padma.7.13.50)

tattoyaṁ raktatulyaṁ syānna gṛhṇāti tato hariḥ ataeva dvijaśreṣṭha pūrvāhṇe harimarcayet

that water becomes as though blood, and therefore Hari does not receive it. Therefore, O best of brahmins, Hari should be worshipped in the forenoon alone;

Verse 51 (padma.7.13.51)

samastaṁ labhate kāmaṁ keśavasyānukaṁpayā ekavastreṇa viprendra na kuryātpūjanaṁ hareḥ

thereby, by Keshava's grace, every desire is attained. O lord of brahmins, wearing a single garment, the worship of Hari should not be performed.

Verse 52 (padma.7.13.52)

kuryādvāpi tathā pūjāṁ na gṛhṇāti ca keśavaḥ adhautena ca vastreṇa yaḥ pūjāṁ kurute hareḥ

Even should worship be so performed, Keshava does not accept it. Whoever, wearing an unwashed garment, worships Hari,

Verse 53 (padma.7.13.53)

viphalā sā ca pūjā syānna ca viṣṇuḥ prasīdati yaistvabaddhaśikhaiḥ pūjā kriyate cakriṇo janaiḥ

his worship comes to nothing, and Vishnu is not pleased. Whatever people worship the discus-bearer without binding their own tuft of hair,

Verse 54 (padma.7.13.54)

pūjāphalaṁ nāpnuvaṁti baligrāhyā ca sā bhavet asaṁskṛtagṛhe pūjā kriyate jagatīpateḥ

they do not attain the fruit of worship, and that worship goes instead to demons. Whatever worship of the Lord of the universe is performed in an unpurified home,

Verse 55 (padma.7.13.55)

sā pūjā brāhmaṇaśreṣṭha baligrāhyā bhavetkhalu snānaṁ devārcanaṁ caiva dānaṁ ca pitṛpūjanam

O best of brahmins, that worship too goes to demons. Bathing, worship of the gods, giving, and honoring the ancestors —

Verse 56 (padma.7.13.56)

tilakena vinā vipra kurute na vicakṣaṇaḥ tilakānyagṛhītvā yatpuṇyakarma vidhīyate

O brahmin, the wise person does not perform any of these without applying the sacred mark; whatever meritorious deed is performed without applying it,

Verse 57 (padma.7.13.57)

bhasmībhavati tatsarvaṁ kartā ca nārakī bhavet śaṅkhacakragadāpadmairaṅkitaṁ yasya dṛśyate

all of it turns to ash, and its doer becomes a denizen of hell. Whoever's body is seen marked with the conch, discus, mace, and lotus,

Verse 58 (padma.7.13.58)

śarīraṁ brāhmaṇaśreṣṭha vijñeyaḥ so'cyutaḥ svayam yo likheddakṣiṇe bāhau śaṅkha padme ca vaiṣṇavaḥ

O best of brahmins, he should be known as Achyuta himself. Whatever Vaishnava marks upon his own right arm the conch and the lotus,

Verse 59 (padma.7.13.59)

savye cakraṁ gadāṁ caiva sa viṣṇurnātra saṁśayaḥ paṅkajaṁ dakṣiṇe bāhau śaṅkhasyopari yo likhet

Then again that excellent brahmin, his mind filled with joy, with joined palms, began to praise the boon-giving Lord Mahadeva.

Verse 119 (padma.7.13.119)

brāhmaṇa uvāca- yaṁ na paśyaṁti deveśaṁ devā api savāsavāḥ paśyāmi tamahaṁ sākṣānmahābhāgyamidaṁ mama

The brahmin said: whom, the God of gods, even the gods together with Indra cannot see, him I now behold in person — this is my great good fortune.

Verse 120 (padma.7.13.120)

dhyānāvasthitacittena yo'dṛśyaḥ parameśvaraḥ paśyāmi tamahaṁ sākṣān sādhyaṁ kimaparaṁ mama

That supreme Lord, invisible even to those whose minds abide in the state of meditation, him I now behold in person — what else remains for me to attain?

Verse 121 (padma.7.13.121)

tvannāmasmaraṇādeva mahāpātakino'pi ca gacchaṁti paramaṁ sthānaṁ samīkṣe tamahaṁ prabhum

That very Lord, by the mere remembrance of whose name even great sinners go to the supreme place, him I now behold.

Verse 122 (padma.7.13.122)

kṛtārtho'smi kṛtārtho'smi kṛtārtho'smi ca bhāgyavān namastubhyaṁ namastubhyaṁ prasīda parameśvara

I am fulfilled, I am fulfilled, I am fulfilled and fortunate. Salutation to you, salutation to you, be gracious, O supreme Lord.

Verse 123 (padma.7.13.123)

mahādeva uvāca- bhavato'nena vākyena tuṣṭo'smi dvijasattama varaṁ vṛṇu mahābhāga varaṁ ditsurahaṁ khalu

Mahadeva said: by these words of yours I am pleased, O best of the twice-born; O great one, ask a boon, for I truly wish to give.

Verse 124 (padma.7.13.124)

brāhmaṇa uvāca- bhavaṁtaṁ paramātmānamadṛśyaṁ daivatairapi sākṣātpaśyāmyahaṁ nātha kiṁ kāryamaparairvaraiḥ

The brahmin said: O lord, you, the supreme Self, invisible even to the gods, I now behold in person — what use is there in other boons?

Verse 125 (padma.7.13.125)

tathāpi tvaṁ mahādeva varaṁ ditsuḥ kṛpāmayaḥ pṛcchāmi yadahaṁ kiṁcittadbrūhi parameśvara

Yet, O Mahadeva, since you, compassionate one, wish to grant a boon, tell me what I now ask, O supreme Lord.

Verse 126 (padma.7.13.126)

ko'haṁ tasthau purā deva kiṁ vā kāryaṁ kṛtaṁ purā saṁsārasāgare nātha patito'smi kathaṁ prabho

O god, what was I before, what deed did I do before? O Lord, how did I fall into this ocean of transmigration?

Verse 127 (padma.7.13.127)

karmaṇā prāpyate deho dehī pāpena lipyate punaḥ pāpaprabhāveṇa prāpyate viṣamā gatiḥ

By deed a body is attained, and the embodied being becomes tainted by sin; then, by the power of that sin, an adverse state is attained.

Verse 128 (padma.7.13.128)

prabhāvaiḥ karmaṇāṁ keṣāṁ janma prāptamidaṁ mayā nānāduḥkhapradaṁ nātha prasanno brūhi śaṁkara

By the power of what deeds have I attained this birth, which brings manifold sorrow, O lord? Tell me, being gracious, O Shankara.

Verse 129 (padma.7.13.129)

pāpamūlamidaṁ janma janma duḥkhasya kāraṇam jñātumicchāmyahaṁ tasmātpūrvavṛttāṁtamātmanaḥ

This birth is rooted in sin, birth itself is the cause of sorrow; therefore I wish to know my own past history.

Verse 130 (padma.7.13.130)

sthito'haṁ jananī kukṣau janaṭharānalatāpitaḥ mūtraviṣṭhāprakīrṇe ca vipākena ca karmaṇām

Dwelling in a mother's womb, scorched by her own inner fire, in a place filled with urine and excrement, through the ripening of my own deeds,

Verse 131 (padma.7.13.131)

garbhavāsasamaṁ duḥkhaṁ saṁsāre na hi manyate kathaṁ mayānubhūtaṁ tatprabho bhaktārtināśana

no sorrow in this world is deemed equal to the dwelling in the womb. O Lord, O remover of your devotees' anguish, how did I endure that?

Verse 132 (padma.7.13.132)

saṁsāre'sminmahāghore nānāduḥkhasamanvite asāre māyayā viṣṇormohite pātakāśraye

In this most terrible transmigration, filled with manifold sorrow, bewildered by Vishnu's own maya, the very refuge of sin, void of substance,

Verse 133 (padma.7.13.133)

dustare baṁdhuhīne ca kāmakrodhādisaṁyute śokarogaprade caiva janmamṛtyuprade tathā

hard to cross, devoid of true kin, filled with lust and anger and the rest, giver of grief and disease, and giver of birth and death,

Verse 134 (padma.7.13.134)

apāre jagatāmīśa patito'smi kathaṁ śiva etatsarvaṁ vibho brūhi yadi te mayyanugrahaḥ

in this boundless universe, O Shiva, O lord of the worlds, how have I fallen? All this, O mighty one, tell me, if you have grace upon me.

Verse 135 (padma.7.13.135)

mahādeva uvāca- yadyapyetaddivajaśreṣṭha guhyādguhyataraṁ mahat aprakāśyaṁ tathāpi tvāṁ bhaktaṁ prativadāmyaham

Mahadeva said: though this, O best of brahmins, is a secret more secret than any secret, and great, not to be revealed, yet, O devotee, I shall tell you.

Verse 136 (padma.7.13.136)

purā tvaṁ brāhmaṇaḥ śreṣṭha śabarānvayasaṁbhava daṇḍapāṇiriti khyātaḥ sthitaḥ sallokaduḥkhadaḥ

O excellent one, you were formerly a brahmin, born in a lineage of forest-hunters, known by the name Dandapani, a giver of sorrow to all people.

Verse 137 (padma.7.13.137)

paralokabhayaṁ tyaktvā vivekaiḥ parivarjitaḥ dasyuvṛttiṁ prapannārti paramakleśadāyinīm

Abandoning fear of the next world, void of discernment, you took up the most afflicting way of the bandit, which brings anguish upon others.

Verse 138 (padma.7.13.138)

dasyuvṛttigataṁ dṛṣṭvā bhavaṁtamatinirdayam apare bhrātaraḥ sarve babhūvuste ca dasyavaḥ

Seeing you, most merciless, immersed in the bandit's way, all your other brothers too became bandits.

Verse 139 (padma.7.13.139)

teṣāṁ nāmāni viprendra bhātṝṇāṁ nigadāmyaham yaiḥ sārddhaṁ bhavatā pūrvaṁ bhrātṛbhirdasyutā kṛtā

O lord of brahmins, I shall now name those brothers with whom you formerly carried on the bandit's trade.

Verse 140 (padma.7.13.140)

daṁḍī daṁḍāyudhaścaiva dattavāndattabhūstathā suṁdaḍo daṁḍaketuśca bhrātaraḥ ṣaṭprakīrtitāḥ

Dandi, Dandayudha, Dattavan, Dattabhu, Sudanda, and Dandaketu — six brothers, thus were they named.

Verse 141 (padma.7.13.141)

tairbhrātṛbhirmahāghorairdayābhiḥ parivarjitaḥ daṁḍena bhavatā nityaṁ sarve vyagrīkṛtā janāḥ

Together with those most terrible, compassionless brothers, you, by your own rod, ever threw all people into turmoil.

Verse 142 (padma.7.13.142)

dhanalobhena bhavatā duṣṭaistairbhrātṛbhiḥ saha araṇye prāṁtaro vipra hatāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ

Out of greed for wealth, you, together with those wicked brothers, in the wilderness of the forest, O brahmin, slew people by the hundreds and thousands.

Verse 143 (padma.7.13.143)

hatvā ca sāyakaistīkṣṇairvanasthena tvayā sadā gavāṁ kravyāṇi bhuktvā ca madirābhiḥ saha dvija

Slaying them with sharp arrows, dwelling in the forest, you always ate the flesh of cows and drank liquor too, O brahmin.

Verse 144 (padma.7.13.144)

tato yānavidhiṁ sarve vaṇijastvadbhayāttathā tatyajurvipine tasminnanarthaḥ patitaḥ sadā

Then, out of fear of you, all merchants began to abandon the very road of travel through that forest — there ever prevailed only ruin.

Verse 145 (padma.7.13.145)

yasya vittaṁ na tadvittaṁ gṛhaṁ yasya na tadgṛham yasya bhāryā na tadbhāryā tvayi dasyutvamāgate

Whoever's wealth you seized, that was no longer his wealth; whoever's house you ruined, that was no longer his house; whoever's wife you took, she was no longer his wife — to such a degree had your banditry reached.

Verse 146 (padma.7.13.146)

evaṁ svabhrātṛbhistaistu tasminneva mahāvane gato vartmaśramaśrāṁtaḥ snānārthaṁ sarasīṁ prati

Thus, together with those brothers of yours, in that same great forest, wearied by the exertion of travel, you went toward a lake for a bath.

Verse 147 (padma.7.13.147)

tatra snānaṁ samācarya kṣudhitena dvijottama bhakṣitāni mṛṇālāni bhrātṛbhistairjalāni ca

O best of the twice-born, having bathed there, hungry, those brothers ate lotus-stems and water-lilies.

Verse 148 (padma.7.13.148)

atha tvayā dvijaśreṣṭha kautukāttatra sattama bhuktāni padmapuṣpāṇi praphullāni bahūni ca

Then, O best of brahmins, O best one, you too, out of mere curiosity, ate there many blooming lotus flowers.

Verse 149 (padma.7.13.149)

tasminneva tataḥ kāle brāhmaṇo vipinecaraḥ sarvavedā iti khyātastatra snānārthamāgataḥ

At that very time, a brahmin known by the name Sarvaveda, a forest-dweller, came there to bathe.

Verse 150 (padma.7.13.150)

tatra snātvā sa dharmātmā bhagavaṁtaṁ janārdanam yaṣṭuṁ tvāmakamaṁbhojaṁ yayāce vinayānvitaḥ

Bathing there, that righteous man, for the worship of the Lord Janardana, humbly began to ask you for a lotus.

Verse 151 (padma.7.13.151)

atha tvayā ca viprendra padmamekaṁ sunirmalam dattaṁ paramayā bhaktyā pūjārthaṁ kamalāpateḥ

Then, O lord of brahmins, you too gave him a most pure lotus, with the highest devotion, for the worship of the beloved of Kamala.

Verse 152 (padma.7.13.152)

tvayā dattena padmena sa ca prīto dvijottamaḥ pūjayāmāsa tatraiva viṣṇuṁ sakalakārakam

With that lotus given by you, that excellent brahmin, delighted, worshipped there Vishnu, doer of every cause.

Verse 153 (padma.7.13.153)

viṣṇupūjā paraṁ dṛṣṭvā taṁ vipraṁ sarvavedasam tvamapi prahasanviṣṇuṁ nanantha ca sukāmadam

Beholding that brahmin, knower of every Veda, in the midst of his supreme worship of Vishnu, you too, laughing, began to worship Vishnu, giver of every wish.

Verse 154 (padma.7.13.154)

athābhyarcya parātmānaṁ caturvargaphalapradam yathoktavidhinā vipra sa jagāma yathāgataḥ

Then, having worshipped the supreme Self, giver of the four goals of life, by the due rite, that brahmin returned just as he had come.

Verse 155 (padma.7.13.155)

tenāmbujapradānena praṇāmena ca sattama viṣṇupūjādarśanena naṣṭaṁ te sarvapātakam

O best one, by that very offering of the lotus, by that bow, and by the sight of that worship of Vishnu, all your sins were destroyed.

Verse 156 (padma.7.13.156)

tataḥ kiyadbhirdivasaistasminneva mahāvane saṁprāptakālaḥ paṁcatvaṁ gato'si tvaṁ dvijottama

Then, within a few days, in that same great forest, your time having run its course, O best of the twice-born, you met your death.

Verse 157 (padma.7.13.157)

tenaiva karmaṇā tuṣṭo bhagavānkaruṇālayaḥ dadau tubhyaṁ paraṁ sthānaṁ devairapi sudurllabham

By that very deed pleased, the Lord, abode of compassion, gave you a supreme place, most rare to attain even for the gods.

Verse 158 (padma.7.13.158)

manvaṁtarasahasrāṇi manvaṁtaraśatāni ca bhuktaṁ nānāsukhaṁ tatra kṛpayā kamalāpateḥ

For thousands of manvantaras, and hundreds of manvantaras, by the grace of the beloved of Kamala, you enjoyed manifold happiness there.

Verse 159 (padma.7.13.159)

tataḥ karmāvasāne tu karmabhūmimimāṁ dvija āgatya taiḥ puṇyaphalairjāto'si dvijasaṁtatau

Then, when that deed's fruit came to an end, O brahmin, coming to this very land of action, by those fruits of merit, you were born into a brahmin's lineage.

Verse 160 (padma.7.13.160)

brāhmaṇasya kule śuddhe janma saṁprāpya sattama sarvaguṇāśrayā labdhā haribhaktiracaṁcalā

O best one, born into a pure brahmin lineage, you have attained devotion to Hari, unwavering, the very refuge of every virtue.

Verse 161 (padma.7.13.161)

ārādhito mahāviṣṇuḥ kriyāyogaistvayā prabhuḥ tubhyaṁ dāsyati vijñānaṁ jñānānmukto bhaviṣyati

By the disciplines of kriya-yoga you have worshipped the Lord Maha-Vishnu; he shall grant you supreme knowledge, and by that knowledge you shall be liberated.

Verse 162 (padma.7.13.162)

gaccha brāhmaṇa bhadraṁ te suprīto nijamaṁdiram maddarśanaṁ tvayā prāptaṁ mukto'si bhavabaṁdhanāt

Go, O brahmin, may good come to you — go, well pleased, to your own home. You have attained my own sight, and you are freed from the bondage of transmigration.

Verse 163 (padma.7.13.163)

vyāsa uvāca- ityuktvāṁtardadhe vipra tatraiva jagadīśvaraḥ kṛtārtho brāhmaṇaḥ so'pi jagāma bhavanaṁ svakam

Vyasa said: having said this, O brahmin, the Lord of the universe vanished there. That brahmin too, his purpose fulfilled, went to his own home.

Verse 164 (padma.7.13.164)

atha sa tridinaṁ viṣṇuṁ padmapuṣpairmanoramaiḥ yatnādārādhayāmāsa stutyarthaṁ parameśvaram

Then, for three days, with delightful lotus flowers, carefully, for the sake of praising Vishnu, he worshipped the supreme Lord.

Verse 165 (padma.7.13.165)

viṣṇuṁ samārādhya ciraṁ prasuptaḥ padmaprasūnairvicitraiḥ supuṣpaiḥ jñānaṁ samāsādya jagāma mokṣaṁ prasādataḥ śrīgaruḍadhvajasya

Having worshipped Vishnu for a long time, and, resting amid manifold wondrous, lovely lotus flowers, meeting death there, attaining knowledge, he attained liberation by the grace of Sri Vishnu, whose banner bears Garuda.

Verse 166 (padma.7.13.166)

anicchayāpi kamalaṁ yacchataḥ phalamīdṛśam viṣṇave yacchato bhaktyā na jāne kiṁ bhavediti

If such is the fruit of offering a lotus even unwillingly — then what the fruit would be of offering it to Vishnu with devotion, I do not know.

Verse 167 (padma.7.13.167)

satyaṁ satyaṁ punaḥ satyaṁ satyameva mayocyate kamalairharimabhyarcya prāpyate paramaṁ padam

True, true, and true again, truly I declare it — worshipping Hari with lotuses, the supreme abode is attained.

Verse 168 (padma.7.13.168)

ekamevāraviṁdaṁ yaḥ pradadāti murāraye tasya nāsti punarjanma saṁsāreṣu bhayāvahe

Whoever offers even a single lotus to the foe of Mura, he is not born again in this terrible transmigration.

Verse 169 (padma.7.13.169)

nārāyaṇaṁ ye ca praphullavārijairdayāmayaṁ kāmadamarcayaṁti ekāhamapyutkaṭapāpayuktāste yāṁti muktiṁ prati pāpino'pi

Whatever people worship, with blooming lotuses, the compassionate Narayana, fulfiller of every desire — they, even should they be sinners burdened with terrible sins, by worshipping even a single day, go toward liberation.
