Kriya Khanda (Kriyayogasara) · Chapter 14
The Glory of Worshipping the Lord with a Pure Mind
Verse 1 (padma.7.14.1)
vyāsa uvāca- mārgaśīrṣe dvijaśreṣṭha mahālakṣmyā samanvitam pūjayedavyayaṁ viṣṇuṁ bhaktibhāvena vaiṣṇavaḥ
Vyasa said: O best of brahmins, in the month of Margashirsha, the Vaishnava should worship, with devout feeling, the imperishable Vishnu together with Mahalakshmi.
Verse 2 (padma.7.14.2)
mlecchadeśe ca vipreṁdra tathaiva patitālaye durgaṁdhaiśca parivyāpte sthāne viṣṇuṁ na pūjyet
O lord of brahmins, in the land of barbarians, in the house of the fallen, and in a place filled with foul smell, Vishnu should not be worshipped.
Verse 3 (padma.7.14.3)
pākhaṁḍānāṁ samīpe ca mahāpātakināṁ tathā asatyabhāṣiṇāṁ caiva na kuryādviṣṇupūjanam
Near hypocrites, near great sinners, and near speakers of falsehood, the worship of Vishnu should not be performed.
Verse 4 (padma.7.14.4)
kraṁdatāṁ sannidhau cāpi kalahānapi kurvatām tathopahasatāṁ sthāne na kuryātpūjanaṁ hareḥ
Near those who weep, near those who quarrel, and in the place of those who mock, the worship of Hari should not be performed.
Verse 5 (padma.7.14.5)
pratigraharatānāṁ ca sthāne viṣṇuṁ na pūjayet kṛpaṇānāṁ gṛhe caiva paravittābhilāṣiṇām
In the place of those absorbed in accepting gifts, Vishnu should not be worshipped, nor in the house of misers, nor in the house of those who covet others' wealth.
Verse 6 (padma.7.14.6)
tathā kapaṭavṛttīnāṁ na kuryādviṣṇupūjanam nārāyaṇārcane vipra paraṁ bhaktiparāyaṇaḥ
Nor should the worship of Vishnu be performed among those given to deceit. O brahmin, in the worship of Narayana, given wholly to devotion,
Verse 7 (padma.7.14.7)
anyacittaṁ parityajya haridhyānaparo bhavet hāhākāraṁ ca niśvāsaṁ vismayaṁ sa dvijottama
abandoning every other thought, one should become absorbed in meditation on Hari. O best of the twice-born, wailing, sighing, astonishment,
Verse 8 (padma.7.14.8)
pākhaṁḍajanasaṁbhāṣaṁ na kuryāddharipūjanam ananyamānaso bhūtvā devadevaṁ jagadgurum
and conversation amid hypocritical people — amid these, Hari-worship should not be performed. With a single-pointed mind, the God of gods, teacher of the universe, should be worshipped.
Verse 9 (padma.7.14.9)
bhasmanyapi ca yatpuṣpaṁ dīyate labhate harau ciṁtāgamaśataśrāṁtaḥ śilācakreṣvapi dvija
Even a flower offered upon ashes reaches Hari; O brahmin, even one wearied by a hundred anxieties, even offered upon a stone grinding-wheel,
Verse 10 (padma.7.14.10)
puṣpaṁ dadāti yanmartyo na labhedatha tatprabhuḥ ananyamānaso bhūtvā bhaktyā viṣṇuṁ yajedbudhaḥ
whatever flower a mortal gives, he indeed receives it; the Lord never forgets it. The wise person should worship Vishnu with a single-pointed mind and with devotion.
Verse 11 (padma.7.14.11)
bhrāṁtacittena yatkarma kriyate tacca niṣphalam sarvakarma manodhīnaṁ manodhīnaṁ jagattrayam
Whatever deed is done with a distracted mind is fruitless; every deed is subject to the mind, and even the three worlds are subject to the mind alone.
Verse 12 (padma.7.14.12)
tasmānmano dṛḍhīkṛtya pūjayetkamalāpatim pūjānyatra mano'nyatra bhavedyasya dvijottama
Therefore, only with a steadied mind, should the beloved of Kamala be worshipped. O best of the twice-born, whoever's worship is in one place, and mind in another,
Verse 13 (padma.7.14.13)
na ca tasya phaletkāryaṁ kalpakoṭiśatairapi yatnādvihitaśauco'pi viṣṇupūjāparo'pi ca
his task does not succeed, even in hundreds of millions of kalpas. Even one who carefully observes purity, even one devoted to the worship of Vishnu,
Verse 14 (padma.7.14.14)
manaḥśuddhivihīnaśceccāṁḍāla iva gamyate abhaktyā yattapastaptaṁ suciraṁ vidhinā dvija
if void of purity of mind, is reckoned as though a Chandala. O brahmin, even austerity performed by due rite, if performed for a long time without devotion,
Verse 15 (padma.7.14.15)
bhavennirarthakaṁ sarvaṁ kevalaṁ kāyaśodhanam merupramāṇakaṁ svarṇaṁ brāhmaṇāya kuṭuṁbine
all of it becomes fruitless, remaining nothing more than mere bodily purification. Gold equal in weight to Mount Meru too, given to a family-owning brahmin,
Verse 16 (padma.7.14.16)
dattamabhyarthanāśāya abhaktyā śreyase'pi ca tasmādekamanā bhūtvā bhaktiśraddhāsamanvitaḥ
given without devotion, becomes merely for the sake of future petitioning and hope of welfare. Therefore, with a single-pointed mind, joined with devotion and faith,
Verse 17 (padma.7.14.17)
savāstukādi śākaṁ ca dadyātsadasi vaiṣṇave nāraṁgasya phalaṁ divyaṁ supakvaṁ yastu yacchati
greens such as vastuka should be offered in the assembly of Vaishnavas. Whoever offers a divine, fully-ripened orange,
Verse 18 (padma.7.14.18)
keśavāya dvijaśreṣṭha so'smābhirabhipūjyate yatnena nūtanaṁ vastu priyaṁ bhagavato hareḥ
O best of brahmins, offered to Keshava, we too honor him thereby. With effort, whatever new object is dear to the Lord Hari,
Verse 19 (padma.7.14.19)
tadevāgrayaṇe māsi bhaktyā dadyānmurāraye pauṣe māsi samāyāte śrīkṛṣṇaṁ varadaṁ prabhum
that should be offered, with devotion, to the foe of Mura in the month of Agrahayana (Margashirsha). When the month of Pausha comes, the boon-giving Lord Sri Krishna,
Verse 20 (padma.7.14.20)
devamikṣurasairdivyaiḥ snāpayedvaiṣṇavo janaḥ yaḥ snāpayati viprendra viṣṇumikṣurasaiḥ prabhum
the Vaishnava should bathe with divine sugarcane juice. O lord of brahmins, whoever bathes the Lord Vishnu with sugarcane juice,
Verse 21 (padma.7.14.21)
iha bhuṁkte sukhaṁ sarvaṁ mṛto yātīkṣusāgaram yo dadyādikṣunaivedyaṁ devadevāya viṣṇave
he, here, enjoying every happiness, upon death goes to an ocean of sugarcane juice. Whoever offers to the God of gods, Vishnu, an offering of sugarcane,
Verse 22 (padma.7.14.22)
so'pi tatphalamāpnoti kimanyairbahubhāṣitaiḥ sudugdhapṛthukaṁ pauṣe dadhibhirvā samanvitam
he too attains that same fruit — what more, indeed, need be said? Flattened rice cooked in milk, or with curd as well, in the month of Pausha,
Verse 23 (padma.7.14.23)
datvā murāraye martyaḥ sarvānkāmānavāpnuyāt sarvaiḥ purātanaṁ vastraṁ dūrīkṛtya murāraye
offered to the foe of Mura, a mortal man attains every desire. Setting aside every old garment, to the foe of Mura,
Verse 24 (padma.7.14.24)
śītasya vāraṇārthāya dadyādvastraṁ ca nūtanam pauṣasaṁkramaṇe vipra salakṣmīkāya viṣṇave
to ward off the cold, a new garment should be offered. On the Pausha equinox transition, O brahmin, the mortal who desires liberation should offer to Vishnu together with Lakshmi
Verse 25 (padma.7.14.25)
dadyānmumukṣurmanujo daśavarṇaṁ ca pīṭhakam yastu śaṅkhadhvaniṁ kuryātsaṁpūjya kamalāpatim
a ten-colored seat. Whoever, having worshipped the beloved of Kamala, sounds a conch,
Verse 26 (padma.7.14.26)
tasya puṇyaphalaṁ vacmi śṛṇu vatsa samāhitaḥ agamyāgamanādyaiśca vimuktaḥ sarvapātakaiḥ
his fruit of merit I now declare, O child, listen with attention. Freed of sins beginning with going unto a forbidden woman,
Verse 27 (padma.7.14.27)
aṁte viṣṇupuraṁ gatvā viṣṇunā saha modate vainateyāṁkitāṁ ghaṁṇṭāṁ yastu vādayate hareḥ
he, at the end, going to Vishnu's own abode, rejoices there together with Vishnu. Whoever, at the time of Hari's worship, sounds a bell marked with the son of Vinata (Garuda),
Verse 28 (padma.7.14.28)
pūjākāle dvijaśreṣṭha tasya puṇyaṁ vadāmyaham abhakṣyabhakṣaṇādyaiśca vimuktaḥ sarvapātakaiḥ
O best of brahmins, his merit I now declare to you. Freed of sins beginning with eating forbidden food,
Verse 29 (padma.7.14.29)
prayāti maṁdiraṁ viṣṇo rathamāruhya śobhanam tatra bhuktvākhilānkāmānkalpakoṭiśatāvadhi
he goes to the temple of Vishnu, mounting a splendid chariot. There, enjoying every desire for hundreds of millions of kalpas,
Verse 30 (padma.7.14.30)
punarāgatya dharaṇīṁ caturvedī dvijottamaḥ tatra bhuktvākhilānkāmānkalpakoṭiśatāvadhi
then returning to the earth, he becomes an excellent brahmin, knower of the four Vedas. There, enjoying every desire for hundreds of millions of kalpas,
Verse 31 (padma.7.14.31)
punarviṣṇupuraṁ gatvā mokṣaṁ prāpnotyanuttamam vīṇāṁ vādayate yastu pūjākāle jagatpateḥ
then, going again to Vishnu's own abode, he attains liberation without equal. Whoever, at the time of worship, plays the vina before the Lord of the universe,
Verse 32 (padma.7.14.32)
paṁḍitānāmagraṇīḥ syātsa martyaḥ pratijanmani mṛdaṁgavādyakṛdyastu pūjāyāṁ kaiṭabhadviṣaḥ
that man, in every birth, becomes foremost among the learned. Whoever, in the worship of the foe of Kaitabha, plays the mridanga,
Verse 33 (padma.7.14.33)
tasya prasanno bhagavāndadātyabhimataṁ phalam ḍamaruṁ ḍiḍimaṁ caiva jharjharīṁ madhurīṁ tathā
with him the Lord, well pleased, grants the desired fruit. The damaru, the dindima, the jharjhari, the madhuri,
Verse 34 (padma.7.14.34)
paṭahaṁ duṁdubhiṁ caiva kāhalaṁ siṁdhuvārakam kāṁsyaṁ ca karatālaṁ ca veṇuṁ vādayate tu yaḥ
the patah, the dundubhi, the kahala, the sindhuvaraka, the bronze cymbal and the hand-cymbals, and the flute — whoever plays these,
Verse 35 (padma.7.14.35)
pūjākāle mahāviṣṇostasya puṇyaṁ niśāmaya steyārthaiḥ pātakairmukto maṁdiraṁ yāti cakriṇaḥ
at the time of Maha-Vishnu's worship, hear his merit. Freed of sins such as theft, he goes to the temple of the discus-bearer,
Verse 36 (padma.7.14.36)
paramaṁ jñānamāsādya tatraiva parimucyate kalaśabdaṁ ca yaḥ kuryātpūjākāle jagadguroḥ
and, attaining supreme knowledge there itself, is liberated. Whoever, at the time of worship, makes sweet melodious sound before the teacher of the universe,
Verse 37 (padma.7.14.37)
mukhavādyaṁ ca viprendra tasya puṇyaṁ mayocyate koṭikoṭikulairyuktaḥ prayāti mandiraṁ hareḥ
and plays a mouth-instrument (a whistle and the like), O lord of brahmins, his merit I now declare to you. Together with tens of millions of his own kin, he goes to the temple of Hari,
Verse 38 (padma.7.14.38)
jñānamāsādya tatraiva mokṣamakṣayyamāpnuyāt viṣṇorāyatane yastu bhaktiyuktaḥ pranṛtyati
and, attaining knowledge there itself, attains imperishable liberation. Whoever, filled with devotion, dances in the temple of Vishnu,
Verse 39 (padma.7.14.39)
sa yāti brāhmaṇaśreṣṭha tadviṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padam yastu gāyati gītāni bhaktyā nārāyaṇāgrataḥ
O best of brahmins, he goes to that very supreme abode of Vishnu. Whoever, with devotion, sings songs before Narayana,
Verse 40 (padma.7.14.40)
sa nṛpatvamavāpnoti gandharvāṇāṁ pureṣu ca stauti stotrairjagannāthaṁ bhaktyā ca vaiṣṇavo janaḥ
he attains kingship in the cities of the gandharvas. Whatever Vaishnava, with devotion, praises the Lord of the universe with hymns,
Verse 41 (padma.7.14.41)
tasya prasanno bhagavānsarvānkāmānprayacchati māsemāse hariṁ yastu vidhinānena pūjayet
with him the Lord, well pleased, fulfills every desire. Whoever, month by month, worships Hari by this rite,
Verse 42 (padma.7.14.42)
acireṇaiva viprarṣe prasādayati so'cyutaḥ
O sage among brahmins, that Achyuta soon becomes pleased with him.
Verse 43 (padma.7.14.43)
jagadudadhimimaṁ ye tartumicchaṁti martyāḥ pracurataragabhīraṁ sarvaduḥkhapradaṁ ca paramapuruṣapādāṁbhojayugmaṁ manojñaṁ tridaśanivaha sevyaṁte ca sarve yajaṁtu
Whatever mortals wish to cross this exceedingly vast, deep ocean of the universe, giver of every sorrow, let them all worship the lovely lotus-feet of that supreme Being, served by the host of the thirty gods.
