Kriya Khanda (Kriyayogasara) · Chapter 19

The Bandit Urvisha's Cart of Molasses Offered to Hari

Chapter 18All chaptersChapter 20

Verse 1 (padma.7.19.1)

vyāsa uvāca- nārāyaṇaprapannā ye narābhaktisamanvitāḥ kadācidaśubhaṁ teṣāṁ vidyate na dvijottama

Vyasa said: Best of brahmins, whoever men take refuge in Narayana, endowed with devotion, never encounter misfortune.

Verse 2 (padma.7.19.2)

punareva pravakṣyāmi māhātmyaṁ kamalāpateḥ yacchrutvā mānavāḥ sarve labhaṁte paramaṁ padam

I shall tell once more the glory of the Consort of Lakshmi, hearing which all people attain the supreme state.

Verse 3 (padma.7.19.3)

vāsudevasya māhātmyaṁ śrutvā tṛpyaṁti vaiṣṇavāḥ pākhaṇḍā na hi tṛpyaṁti narake kleśabhāginaḥ

Hearing the glory of Vasudeva, Vaishnavas find satisfaction; but hypocrites find no satisfaction — they are destined to suffer torment in hell.

Verse 4 (padma.7.19.4)

pākhaṇḍānāṁ samīpe tu viṣṇumāhātmyamuttamam na vaktavyaṁ dvijaśreṣṭha vaktavyaṁ vaiṣṇavāgrataḥ

Best of brahmins, the exalted glory of Vishnu should not be spoken before hypocrites; it should be spoken only before Vaishnavas.

Verse 5 (padma.7.19.5)

pūrvaṁ tretāyuge vipra urvīśurnāma jaimine āsītpāparato nityaṁ dharmaniṁdāparāyaṇaḥ

O Jaimini, in a former time, in the Treta age, there lived a brahmin named Urvisha, who was ever given to sin, devoted wholly to reviling dharma.

Verse 6 (padma.7.19.6)

brahmasvahārī viprendra parastrīgamanodyataḥ gomāṁsāśī surāpī ca veśyāvibhramalolupaḥ

O foremost of brahmins, he was a thief of property belonging to brahmins, ready to approach another's wife, an eater of cow's flesh, a drinker of wine, greedy for the fickle charms of courtesans.

Verse 7 (padma.7.19.7)

śaraṇāgatahaṁtā ca paraniṁdākaraḥ sadā viśvāsaghātī mitraghno jñātipīḍākarastathā

He was a slayer of those who sought refuge with him, ever a slanderer of others, a betrayer of trust, a destroyer of friends, a tormentor of his own kinsmen.

Verse 8 (padma.7.19.8)

asatyabhāṣī krūraśca pākhaṁḍajanasaṅgabhāk vṛtticchedī dvijātīnāṁ nyāsāpahārakastathā

He was a speaker of falsehood, cruel, a companion of hypocrites, one who cut off brahmins' livelihood, and a thief of property entrusted to his keeping.

Verse 9 (padma.7.19.9)

tādṛśaṁ taṁ samālokya duṣṭaṁ pāpaparāyaṇam ājagmurjñātayaḥ sarve kruddhāstasya nijaṁgṛham

Seeing him thus, so wicked, so given wholly to sin, all his kinsmen, filled with anger, came to his very house.

Verse 10 (padma.7.19.10)

jñātaya ūcuḥ - pratiṣṭhopārjitā pūrvairasmākaṁ vimale kule sā pratiṣṭhā tvayā mūḍha vināśaṁ pratinīyate

The kinsmen said: The reputation earned by our ancestors in our spotless family — that very reputation, fool, is being dragged by you toward ruin.

Verse 11 (padma.7.19.11)

dharmamārgaṁ parityajya kuruṣe pātakaṁ sadā madvaṁśakīrtihananaṁ jāto'si jñātiduḥkhadaḥ

Abandoning the path of dharma, you commit sin unceasingly; you have been born as the destroyer of our lineage's fame, the bringer of grief to your own kin.

Verse 12 (padma.7.19.12)

ativismayadā sṛṣṭirvidhāturmanyate tvayi yasminsiṁdhau śaśī jātastatra kṣveḍodbhavo'pi ca

The Creator's handiwork seems most astonishing in your case — from the same ocean that produced the moon, poison too was born.

Verse 13 (padma.7.19.13)

aho śaktiḥ kuputrāṇāṁ saṁkhyātuṁ na ca śakyate anekaiḥ puruṣaiḥ kīrtiṁ saṁcitāṁ haṁti tatkṣaṇāt

Ah, the power of a bad son cannot be measured — in an instant it destroys the fame accumulated by many generations of men.

Verse 14 (padma.7.19.14)

jāte putrottame vaṁśaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ syādadhamo'pi ca putredhametu śreṣṭho'pi vaṁśo gacchati hīnatām

With the birth of an excellent son, even a low lineage becomes exalted; but with a wretched son, even an exalted lineage sinks into disgrace.

Verse 15 (padma.7.19.15)

vyāsa uvāca- ityuktvā jñātayaste ca taṁ sarve pāpināṁ varam apakīrtibhayātkruddhāstatyajuḥ sahasā dvija

Vyasa said: Brahmin, having said this, all his kinsmen, out of fear of disgrace, angrily abandoned that foremost of sinners at once.

Verse 16 (padma.7.19.16)

jñātibhiḥ sa parityakto janaiḥ sarvaiśca dhikkṛtaḥ prapede dasyutāṁ duḥkhī vibhraṣṭākhilavaibhavaḥ

Abandoned by his kinsmen and cursed by everyone, stripped of all his wealth, he sorrowfully took up the life of a bandit.

Verse 17 (padma.7.19.17)

taṁ dasyukarmakurvaṁtaṁ nirddayaṁ parahiṁsakam dhṛtvā janapadāḥ sarve bhūpālāya nyavedayan

Committing banditry, merciless, harming others — the townspeople seized him and presented him before the king.

Verse 18 (padma.7.19.18)

tena bhūmibhujā tasya pitṛsnehāddivajottama na hato'sau durācāro nijadeśādvahiṣkṛtaḥ

Best of brahmins, that king, out of affection for his father, did not kill that wicked man, but banished him from his own land.

Verse 19 (padma.7.19.19)

tato'sau vanamāśritya dasyubhiḥ saha nirddayaḥ pāṁthasvaharaṇārthāya tasthau bahubhiruddhataiḥ

Then that merciless man, taking refuge in the forest, remained there among many insolent bandits, ready to plunder travelers.

Verse 20 (padma.7.19.20)

kadācittaṭinītīraṁ dasyubhiḥ saha jaimine vanaparyaṭane śrāṁto jagāma snānahetave

O Jaimini, once, wandering through the forest with the bandits, tired, he went to a riverbank to bathe.

Verse 21 (padma.7.19.21)

tasyāṁ taṭinyāṁ bhagavatparicaryāparāyaṇān asau dadarśa duṣṭātmā brāhmaṇākṛtino bahūn

On that riverbank, that wicked soul saw many men in the guise of brahmins, devoted to the service of the Lord.

Verse 22 (padma.7.19.22)

atha te brāhmaṇāḥ sarve samārādhya janārdanam anyonyaṁ kathayāmāsurvihitā ati kautukāt

Then all those brahmins, having worshipped Janardana, out of great curiosity began speaking to one another.

Verse 23 (padma.7.19.23)

adya caṁpakapuṣpāṇi mayā tyaktāni tāni vai kaścidvadati tāṁbūlaṁ mayā dattaṁ murāraye

"Today I offered champaka flowers" — one said this; another said, "I offered betel-leaf to the foe of Mura."

Verse 24 (padma.7.19.24)

na khāditavyaṁ tāṁbūlaṁ kadācidapi janmani mayādya haraye dattaṁ kadalīphalamuttamam

"Never in this birth shall I eat betel-leaf myself, for today I offered a fine plantain fruit to Hari."

Verse 25 (padma.7.19.25)

janmajanmāni ca mayā bhakṣyaṁ ca kadalīphalam ko'pi vakti mayā dattaṁ haraye dāḍimīphalam

"Birth after birth, plantain fruit alone should I eat," said one; another said, "I offered Hari a pomegranate fruit."

Verse 26 (padma.7.19.26)

ko'pi vakti mayā dattaṁ rasālaphalamuttamam anyo'nyametadvadatāṁ teṣāṁ śrutvā vacāṁsi ca

Another said, "I offered a fine mango." Hearing these words as they spoke thus among themselves —

Verse 27 (padma.7.19.27)

urvīśuścintayāmāsa kiṁ pradāsyāmi viṣṇave saṁsāre yāni vastūni bhakṣyāṇi saṁti tānyaham

— Urvisha began to think: "What can I offer to Vishnu? Whatever edible things exist in this world —"

Verse 28 (padma.7.19.28)

na hi śaknomi saṁtyaktuṁ kiṁ dāsyāmi murāraye nityaṁ vanāṁtarastho'haṁ cauro rājabhayākulaḥ

"— none of them am I able to renounce for myself; what then shall I give to the foe of Mura? I am forever a thief dwelling in the forest, harried by fear of the king."

Verse 29 (padma.7.19.29)

śakaṭārohaṇe nāsti hyadhikāraḥ kadāpi me vyāsa uvāca- ityuktvā dasyunā tena bhūyobhūyo dvijottama

"I have never even had the right to ride upon a cart." Vyasa said: Best of brahmins, saying this again and again, that bandit —

Verse 30 (padma.7.19.30)

śakaṭaṁ haraye dattaṁ caturvargapradāyine atha tebrāhmaṇāḥ sarve jagmurvipra yathāgatāḥ

— thus mentally offered a cart to Hari, the giver of the four goals of life. Then all those brahmins departed, just as they had come.

Verse 31 (padma.7.19.31)

so'pi dasyurdasyubhiśca jagāma nijamāśrayam ekadā guḍakaṁḍolaṁ tenaiva khalu vartmanā

That bandit too went off, together with his fellow bandits, to his own hideout. One day, along that very path, a basket of molasses —

Verse 32 (padma.7.19.32)

gṛhītvā pathikaḥ kaścitkākīmaṁḍalamāgataḥ tato'sau sahasā dasyurnirbhayaḥ parahiṁsakaḥ

— being carried, some traveler arrived at a place named Kakimandala. Then suddenly that fearless bandit, who harmed others —

Verse 33 (padma.7.19.33)

jahāra guḍakaṁḍolamadhvanīnasya tasya ca atha te dasyavaścakrurguḍakaṁḍola bhaṁjanam

— seized that traveler's basket of molasses. Then the bandits broke open that basket of molasses.

Verse 34 (padma.7.19.34)

urvīśuścāpatadbhāge śakaṭaṁ guḍanirmitam urvīśuḥ śakaṭaṁ gauḍaṁ samāsādya dvijottama

In the division of shares, there fell to Urvisha's portion a small cart-shaped piece made of molasses. Best of brahmins, Urvisha, obtaining that molasses "cart" —

Verse 35 (padma.7.19.35)

manasā ciṁtayāmāsa vacaḥsmaraṇapūrvakam ano mayā purā dattaṁ svayameva murāraye

— began to reflect in his mind, remembering his earlier words: "I myself had already, before, offered a cart to the foe of Mura."

Verse 36 (padma.7.19.36)

tasmādano na me grāhyaṁ kadācidiha janmani vicintyeti hṛdā dātuṁ tadano guḍanirmitam

"Therefore, in this birth, I should never keep a cart for myself." Thinking thus in his heart, he resolved to give away that cart made of molasses —

Verse 37 (padma.7.19.37)

dattaṁ viprāya kasmaicinmādhavaprītihetave tāṁ bhaktiṁ tasya vijñāya mahāpātakino dvija

— to some brahmin, for the sake of pleasing Madhava. Brahmin, knowing that devotion in that great sinner —

Verse 38 (padma.7.19.38)

jahāra sakalaṁ pāpaṁ sadyaḥ prīto janārdanaḥ tasminneva dine vipra praviśya ca mahāvanam

— Janardana, pleased, at once took away all his sins. On that very day, brahmin, entering deep into that great forest —

Verse 39 (padma.7.19.39)

hataḥ paurajanaiḥ sarvairatha kruddhaiḥ sa urviśuḥ bhagavānatha taṁ netuṁ vimānaṁ svarṇanirmitam

— that Urvisha was killed by the angry townspeople. Then the Lord, to bring him to himself, dispatched a chariot made of gold —

Verse 40 (padma.7.19.40)

dūtāṁśca preṣayāmāsa nānābharaṇabhūṣitān atha te bhagavaddūtāstamurvīśuṁ gatainasam

— and messengers adorned with various ornaments. Then those messengers of the Lord took that now sinless Urvisha —

Verse 41 (padma.7.19.41)

samāropya vimāne taṁ sadyo jagmuḥ puraṁ hareḥ tatau'sau harisānnidhyaṁ prāpya puṇyātmanāṁ varaḥ

— mounted him on the chariot and went at once to Hari's own city. There, becoming foremost among the virtuous, he attained Hari's very presence.

Verse 42 (padma.7.19.42)

punarmanvaṁtaraśataṁ sthitvā keśavasannidhim paramaṁ jñānamāsādya sa viveśa tanuṁ hareḥ

Then, remaining a hundred manvantaras in Keshava's presence, having attained supreme knowledge, he merged into Hari's own body.

Verse 43 (padma.7.19.43)

vyāsa uvāca- yena kenāpyupāyena haribhaktikaro naraḥ saṁsārajaladheḥ pāraṁ rājahaṁsa iva vrajan

Vyasa said: By whatever means a man performs devotion to Hari, crossing to the far shore of the ocean of worldly existence like a royal swan —

Verse 44 (padma.7.19.44)

kṣaṇameva harerbhaktirvartate yasya cetasi tatpadaṁ paramaṁ yāti sa pāpātmāpi gacchati

One in whose mind devotion to Hari abides even for a single moment — though a sinner, he too goes to that supreme state, he too arrives there.

Verse 45 (padma.7.19.45)

ekamapyuttamaṁ vastu datvā'sau tanmurāraye svayameva hi bhoktavyaṁ paścātpāpopaśāṁtaye

Having offered even one excellent thing to the foe of Mura, one should partake of it oneself only afterward, for the quelling of sin.

Verse 46 (padma.7.19.46)

yadvastu haraye dattaṁ tacca dadyāddivajātaye kiṁciccheṣaṁ na bhoktavyaṁ tasyāvaśyaṁ svayaṁ budhaiḥ

Whatever thing is offered to Hari, that should also be given to a brahmin; the wise should never keep any remainder of it entirely for themselves.

Verse 47 (padma.7.19.47)

vastūni brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhamiṣṭāni yāni kāni ca adatvā viṣṇave tāni na bhoktavyāni vaiṣṇavaiḥ

Best of brahmins, whatever things are cherished, Vaishnavas should never partake of them without first offering them to Vishnu.

Verse 48 (padma.7.19.48)

viṣṇunaivedyamāhātmyaṁ sarvapāpapraṇāśanam setihāsaṁ punarvacmi śṛṇu vipra samāhitaḥ

The glory of an offering made to Vishnu destroys every sin; I shall tell it again, together with its story — listen, brahmin, with a focused mind.

Verse 49 (padma.7.19.49)

āsītsarvajanirnāma brāhmaṇaḥ śuddhavaṁśajaḥ śāṁto dāṁto dayāyukto gurubrāhmaṇapūjakaḥ

There was a brahmin named Sarvajani, born of a pure lineage — peaceful, self-controlled, full of compassion, a worshipper of his elders and of brahmins.

Verse 50 (padma.7.19.50)

hareḥ pūjāparaścaiva harismaraṇatatparaḥ prapannakleśavidhvaṁsī satyavādī jitendriyaḥ

He was devoted to the worship of Hari, absorbed in remembrance of Hari, a destroyer of the afflictions of those who sought refuge with him, truthful, and master of his senses.

Verse 51 (padma.7.19.51)

prātaḥsnāyī nijācāragrāhī hiṁsā vivarjitaḥ ekādaśīvratarato jñātipūjāparāyaṇaḥ

He bathed each morning, held to his own proper conduct, was free from violence, devoted to the Ekadashi fast, and given to honoring his own kinsmen.

Verse 52 (padma.7.19.52)

kadācitsa dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ svapne'paśyacca keśavam śyāmaṁ virajapadmākṣaṁ smerāsyaṁ pītavāsasam

Once that excellent brahmin beheld Keshava in a dream — dark of hue, with eyes like a spotless lotus, his face smiling, clad in yellow.

Verse 53 (padma.7.19.53)

svarṇakuṇḍalamañjīrakirīṭojjvalavigraham kaustubhodbhāsitoraskaṁ vanamālāvibhūṣitam

his form radiant with golden earrings, anklets, and a crown, his chest gleaming with the Kaustubha gem, adorned with a garland of forest flowers.

Verse 54 (padma.7.19.54)

caturbāhuṁ śaṅkhacakragadāpadmadharaṁ prabhum samastairlakṣaṇairyuktaṁ svarṇayajñopavītinam

four-armed, the Lord bearing conch, discus, mace, and lotus, endowed with every auspicious mark, wearing a sacred thread of gold.

Verse 55 (padma.7.19.55)

saṁprāpya darśanaṁ svapne sa vipro jagatīpateḥ kṛtāñjalistamastauṣīdromāṁcitatanurmudā

Obtaining this vision of the Lord of the world in his dream, that brahmin, his body thrilling with joy, joined his palms and began to praise him.

Verse 56 (padma.7.19.56)

tubhyaṁ namo'stu jagataḥ sakalasyabharttre sallokaśokabhayarogavināśanāya nārāyaṇāya kamalāhṛdayapriyāya dharmārthakāmaparamāmṛtadāya tubhyam

Homage to you, sustainer of the whole universe, destroyer of the sorrow, fear, and disease of the good; homage to you, Narayana, beloved of Lakshmi's heart, giver of dharma, wealth, desire, and the supreme nectar of immortality.

Verse 57 (padma.7.19.57)

pāpāni caiva sakalāni mayā kṛtāni mattena mohavaśagena sadā murāre tasmādbibhemi jagadaṁbunidhergabhīrānmāmuddharasva nijabhaktitarīṁ pradāya

O foe of Mura, always in thrall to delusion, I have committed every sin; therefore I am afraid of this deep ocean of worldly existence. Grant me the boat of your own devotion, and lift me out of it.

Verse 58 (padma.7.19.58)

jānāmi yadyapi hare duritaṁ manuṣyo vyāmohamāśucalabhe bhuvi kaiṭabhāre pāpaṁ tathāpi ca mudā satataṁ karomi tasmānna ko'pyahamivāsti jano vimūḍhaḥ

O Hari, foe of Kaitabha, although a man knows that sin swiftly brings on delusion, still I go on committing sin, joyfully, again and again; therefore no one on this earth is as foolish as I am.

Verse 59 (padma.7.19.59)

puṇyadrumaḥ sukhaphalaṁ sahasaiva dhatte kiṁ vedmi neti nṛhare kṛtapātako'ham puṣpadrumārpaṇavidhau na mamāsti vittaṁ nātha prasīda bhagavankimahaṁ karomi

O Man-Lion, do I not know that the tree of merit at once bears the fruit of happiness? Yet I have remained a sinner. My Lord, I lack even the means to offer flowers or fruit in due form; O God, be gracious — what am I to do?

Verse 60 (padma.7.19.60)

tvatpādapadmayugalaṁ paramāmṛtasya sthānaṁ vihāya mama cittamadhuvrato'yam nārīmukhaṁ vrajati devamṛtipradaṁ yacchleṣmaprakīrṇamaniśaṁ kamalabhrameṇa

My God, abandoning your two lotus feet, the very abode of supreme nectar, this mind of mine, like a bee, flies instead toward a woman's mouth — that death-dealing thing, ever filled with mucus, mistaking it, in its delusion, for a lotus.

Verse 61 (padma.7.19.61)

pāṇiḥpradānarahito'nṛtabhāṣivaktraṁ karṇau ca pāpaśravaṇāya sadaiva dakṣau doṣānimānmama hare hara sevakasya yasmānnu nātha śaraṇāgatadoṣahaṁtā

O Hari, my hands are empty of any giving, my mouth speaks only falsehood, my ears are ever skilled only at hearing sin — take away these faults of your servant, for you, my Lord, are the very remover of the faults of those who take refuge in you.

Verse 62 (padma.7.19.62)

saṁsāraghorajaladhau nṛhare kadācittvadbhaktinauriha mayā sudṛḍhā ca labdhā tatrāpi daivavaśago'hamaho durātmā varteta eva satataṁ mamaduḥkhakālaḥ

O Man-Lion, in this terrible ocean of worldly existence, I have at times obtained even the firm boat of devotion to you; yet still, alas, subject to fate, wretched soul that I am, I have gone on living through a constant season of sorrow.

Verse 63 (padma.7.19.63)

saṁsārapāragamanāya lasatpatho'sti kiṁ sarvaduḥkharahitaḥ sadayaḥ prasannaḥ aṁdhīkṛtasya mama mohamahattamisrairdṛṣṭistvayīha na kadāpi ca yāti viṣṇo

O Vishnu, is there not some shining path, free from every sorrow, for crossing this world, on which you are compassionate and pleased? Blinded by the great darkness of delusion, my gaze never once manages to reach you.

Verse 64 (padma.7.19.64)

pāpātmano'pi mama cittamidaṁ murāre naṣṭaṁ vinaṣṭajanakaṣṭavinaṣṭikāri yastvāṁ samastasuravaṁditapādapadma svapne'pi keśimathanādya vibho samīkṣe

O foe of Mura, though a sinner, this mind of mine, which could yet destroy the suffering of afflicted people, had been utterly ruined; and yet, O slayer of Keshi, O mighty Lord, whose lotus feet all the gods worship, today I have beheld even you, in a dream.

Verse 65 (padma.7.19.65)

vyāsa uvāca- iti tena stuto devo bhagavānkamalāpatiḥ uvāca vākyaṁ vākyajñaḥ saṁsārārṇavatārakaḥ

Vyasa said: Thus praised by him, the Blessed Lord, Consort of Lakshmi, knower of all speech, the one who ferries souls across the ocean of worldly existence, spoke these words.

Verse 66 (padma.7.19.66)

śrībhagavānuvāca- bhaktibhistava vipreṁdra tuṣṭo'haṁ nityameva ca tasmāttavācireṇaiva sarvaṁ bhadraṁ bhaviṣyati

The Blessed Lord said: Foremost of brahmins, I am ever pleased by your devotion; therefore, very soon, everything for you shall be well.

Verse 67 (padma.7.19.67)

Brahmin, even as a sinner, I have already accomplished your deliverance; now you are my devotee — no misfortune shall come to you.

Verse 68 (padma.7.19.68)

brāhmaṇa uvāca ko'haṁ tasthau purā viṣṇo kiṁ vā pāpaṁ mayā kṛtam pāpino'pi mamoddhāraḥ kathaṁ pūrvaṁ tvayā kṛtaḥ

The brahmin said: O Vishnu, who was I in a former time? What sin had I committed? Even as a sinner, how did you accomplish my deliverance already, before?

Verse 69 (padma.7.19.69)

saṁsāre'sminkathaṁ jāto janito'haṁ kathaṁ tvayā etatsarvaṁ vibho brūhi yatastvaṁ sadayaḥ sadā

How did I come to be born in this world? How was I given birth by you? Mighty Lord, tell me all of this, since you are ever compassionate.

Verse 70 (padma.7.19.70)

śrībhagavānuvāca- aprakāśyamidaṁ guhyaṁ yadyapi dvijasattama tathāpi tava vātsalyānnigadāmi niśāmaya

The Blessed Lord said: Best of brahmins, although this secret is not fit to be revealed, still, out of affection for you, I shall tell it — listen.

Verse 71 (padma.7.19.71)

purā tvaṁ brāhmaṇaśreṣṭha pakṣivaṁśasamudbhavaḥ bhūto'si bhūmibhāgeṣu nijakarmavipākataḥ

Best of brahmins, in a former time you were born in the lineage of birds, and, as the ripened fruit of your own past deeds, you wandered over various regions of the earth.

Verse 72 (padma.7.19.72)

kṣudhayā tṛṣayā vāpi satataṁ vyākulo bhavān babhrāma bhakṣayankīṭānnirjharoṣṇodakaṁ tathā

Constantly tormented by hunger and thirst, you wandered about, eating insects and drinking the warm water of mountain streams.

Verse 73 (padma.7.19.73)

nānāduḥkhaṁ sadā bhuṁjanpakṣiyonau samudbhavaḥ caturvarṣasahasrāṇi sthito'si tvaṁ purā kṣitau

Born into the bird-species, ever suffering various sorrows, you dwelt upon this earth, in that former time, for four thousand years.

Verse 74 (padma.7.19.74)

ekadā kulabhadrākhyo brāhmaṇaḥ sarvatatvavit pūjayāmāsa māṁ bhaktyā naivedyādyairnadītaṭe

Once a brahmin named Kulabhadra, knower of all truth, worshipped me with devotion, with food-offerings and the like, on a riverbank.

Verse 75 (padma.7.19.75)

samabhyarcya sa vipreṁdro mama naivedyataṁdulam yayau tatraiva nikṣipya bhūya eva nijaṁ gṛham

That foremost of brahmins, having duly worshipped me, left the rice offered to me right there, and went back again to his own home.

Verse 76 (padma.7.19.76)

tato vṛkṣātsamāgatya kṣudhinā pakṣiṇā tvayā mama naivedyasaṁbaṁdhi bhakṣitaṁ sarvataṁdulam

Then you, in your hungry bird's form, came down from a tree and ate up all that rice which had been offered to me.

Verse 77 (padma.7.19.77)

bhuktvaiva sadyo mukto'si pātakairatidāruṇaiḥ kadācitprāptakālastvaṁ kāladharmagato dvija

By that very eating, you were at once freed from the most terrible sins. Brahmin, in time, at your appointed hour, you passed under the sway of death.

Verse 78 (padma.7.19.78)

tvāmānetuṁ mayā dūtāḥ preṣitāḥ sarvathā nijāḥ tato rathe samāropya bhavaṁtaṁ naṣṭakalmaṣam

To bring you to me, I sent my own messengers entirely for that purpose. Then, mounting you, now free of every taint, upon a chariot —

Verse 79 (padma.7.19.79)

sadyo dūtagaṇāḥ sarve samāyātāḥ paraṁ padam yugakoṭisahasrāṇi sthito'si mama sannidhau

— all those messengers brought you at once to the supreme abode. You remained in my presence for thousands of millions of ages.

Verse 80 (padma.7.19.80)

bhuṁjansukhāni sarvāṇi durllabhāni surairapi tato yāto'si viprendra viśuddhe brāhmaṇānvaye

There you enjoyed every happiness, rare even for the gods. Then, foremost of brahmins, you were born into a wholly pure brahmin lineage.

Verse 81 (padma.7.19.81)

tatrāpi mayi bhaktiste jātātisudṛḍhā punaḥ kriyāyogena māṁ nityaṁ samārādhya dvijottama

There too your devotion to me arose again, exceedingly firm; best of brahmins, worshipping me duly and constantly through the practice of kriya-yoga —

Verse 82 (padma.7.19.82)

āyuṣoṁte matprasādānmāmakaṁ padamāpsyasi yadā tuṣṭo'smyahaṁ vipra sapāpātmāpi muktibhāk

— at the end of this life, by my grace, you will attain my own abode. Brahmin, when I am pleased, even a sinner becomes worthy of liberation.

Verse 83 (padma.7.19.83)

kadācidyasya ruṣṭosmi puṇyātmāpi ca pāpabhāk tasmādbrāhmaṇa bhadraṁ te bhakto'si mama suvrata

And one with whom I am ever displeased, though virtuous, becomes bound to sin. Therefore, brahmin, may all be well with you — good man of firm vows, you are my devotee.

Verse 84 (padma.7.19.84)

dāsyāmi te paraṁ sthānaṁ yadalabhyaṁ surairapi brāhmaṇa uvāca- tvatprasādācchrutaṁ nātha pūrvavṛttāṁtamātmanaḥ

I shall give you that supreme abode, unattainable even by the gods. The brahmin said: My Lord, by your grace I have now heard the account of my own former life.

Verse 85 (padma.7.19.85)

idānīṁ śrotumicchāmi yatkiñcidbrūhi tatprabho kasya tuṣṭo'si devendra kasya ruṣṭo'si vā prabho

Now, Lord, I wish to hear more — tell me a little further. O Lord of gods, with whom are you pleased, and with whom are you displeased?

Verse 86 (padma.7.19.86)

mahatyā kṛpayā sarvametanme vaktumarhasi śrībhagavānuvāca- karmaṇā yenaviprendra tuṣṭirme hṛdi jāyate

With your great compassion, be pleased to tell me all of this. The Blessed Lord said: Foremost of brahmins, the deeds by which contentment arises in my heart —

Verse 87 (padma.7.19.87)

krodhaśca tatsamastaṁ ca kathayāmi samāsataḥ yo dayāvāndvijaśreṣṭha sarvabhūteṣu sarvadā

— and those by which anger arises, all of that I shall tell you in brief. Best of brahmins, whoever is ever compassionate toward all beings —

Verse 88 (padma.7.19.88)

ahaṁkāravihīnaśca tasya tuṣṭo'smyahaṁ sadā karma kuryānmadarthaṁ yo dharmabhaktisamanvitaḥ

— and free of pride, with him I am ever pleased. Whoever, endowed with dharma and devotion, performs action for my sake —

Verse 89 (padma.7.19.89)

parahiṁsāvihīno yastasya tuṣṭo'smyahaṁ sadā karmāṇi kurute yastu suvicārya punaḥ punaḥ

— and refrains from harming others, with him I am ever pleased. Whoever performs actions only after careful, repeated reflection —

prapannaṁ yāti yatnādyastasya tuṣṭo'smyahaṁ sadā dadātyanupakāribhyo dānāni dvijasattama

— and earnestly goes to the aid of one who has taken refuge, with him I am ever pleased. Best of brahmins, whoever gives gifts even to those who have done him no favor —

Verse 94 (padma.7.19.94)

mayi cittaṁ sadā yasya tasya tuṣṭo'smyahaṁ sadā karmaṇā yenatuṣṭo'smi niruktaṁ tatsamāsataḥ

— and whose mind ever rests upon me, with him I am ever pleased. Thus I have declared in brief the deeds by which I am pleased.

Verse 95 (padma.7.19.95)

ruṣṭo'smi karmaṇā yena vipra vacmi śṛṇuṣvatam parahiṁsārato yastu nirddayaḥ sarvajaṁtuṣu

Brahmin, now I shall tell the deeds by which I am displeased — listen attentively. Whoever is bent on harming others, merciless toward all creatures —

saṁtyajya sakalaṁ kāryaṁ kriyāyogarato'bhavat nārāyaṇasya naivedyaṁ bhuṁjato'pi phalaṁ tvidam

— abandoned all worldly affairs and became devoted to the practice of kriya-yoga. Such is the fruit of merely partaking of Narayana's own food-offering —

Verse 114 (padma.7.19.114)

haripūjākṛtāṁ puṁsāṁ na jāne kiṁ bhavediti samāsena bravīmi tvāṁ śṛṇu sattama jaimine

— I do not know what fruit awaits those men who actually worship Hari. O excellent Jaimini, I tell you this in brief — listen.

Verse 115 (padma.7.19.115)

sakṛtkṛtvā hareḥ pūjāṁ prāpyate paramaṁ padam mānuṣyaṁ durllabhaṁ loke pūjā tatrāpi cakriṇaḥ

Even by worshipping Hari a single time, the supreme state is attained. In this world, a human birth itself is rare, and within that, worship of the discus-bearing Lord —

Verse 116 (padma.7.19.116)

bhaktistatrāpi viprendra durllabhā parikīrtitā

— and within that, foremost of brahmins, devotion itself is declared to be the rarest thing of all.

Verse 117 (padma.7.19.117)

saṁsārābdhiṁ sarvaduḥkhaprapūrṇaṁ tartuṁ vāṁchā yasya cittesti puṁsaḥ bhaktyā nityaṁ vāsudevasya pūjāṁ kuryādāryaḥ karmaṇāṁ so'khilānām

Whatever man harbors in his mind the wish to cross this ocean of worldly existence, brimming with every sorrow — let that noble man, of all possible actions, constantly perform, with devotion, the worship of Vasudeva alone.
