The Glory of Purushottama-kshetra

Chapter 17All chaptersChapter 19

Verse 1 (padma.7.18.1)

jaiminiruvāca- tīrthaśreṣṭhamiti proktaṁ yattvayā puruṣottamam tanmāhātmyaṁ guro brūhi yadi te mayyanugrahaḥ

Jaimini said: You have declared Purushottama to be the foremost of sacred places — Guru, if you have grace toward me, tell me its glory.

Verse 2 (padma.7.18.2)

vyāsa uvāca- puruṣottamasya māhātmyaṁ samāsena śṛṇu dvija samyagvaktuṁ jagatyasminkaḥ śakto viṣṇunā vinā

Vyasa said: Brahmin, hear in brief the glory of Purushottama; in this world, who besides Vishnu himself is able to tell it in full?

Verse 3 (padma.7.18.3)

lavaṇāṁbhonidhestīraṁ puruṣottamasaṁjñitam puraṁ tadbrāhmaṇaśreṣṭha svargādapi ca durllabham

On the shore of the salt ocean stands a city named Purushottama; best of brahmins, that city is rarer even than heaven.

Verse 4 (padma.7.18.4)

svayamasti pure tasminyataḥ śrīpuruṣottamaḥ puruṣottamamityuktaṁ tasmāttannāmakovidaiḥ

Because Sri Purushottama himself dwells there in that city, the wise have therefore given it the name Purushottama.

Verse 5 (padma.7.18.5)

kṣetraṁ taddurllabhaṁ vipra samaṁtāddaśayojanam tatrasthadehino devairdṛśyaṁte ca caturbhujāḥ

Brahmin, that sacred field, rare indeed, extends ten yojanas in every direction; embodied beings dwelling there appear to the gods as four-armed.

Verse 6 (padma.7.18.6)

praviśanvai tu tatkṣetraṁ sarve syurviṣṇumūrtayaḥ tasmādvicāraṇā tatra na karttavyā vicakṣaṇaiḥ

All who enter that field become forms of Vishnu himself; therefore the discerning should make no distinctions of caste there.

Verse 7 (padma.7.18.7)

cāṇḍālenāpi saṁspṛṣṭaṁ grāhyaṁ tatrānnamagrajaiḥ sākṣādviṣṇuryatastatra cāṇḍālo dvijasattama

Best of brahmins, even food touched by an outcaste there is fit for brahmins to accept, since there even the outcaste is Vishnu himself, made visible.

Verse 8 (padma.7.18.8)

tatrānnapācikā lakṣmīḥ svayaṁ bhoktā janārddanaḥ tasmāttatraudanaṁ vipra daivatairapi durllabham

There Lakshmi herself is the cook, and Janardana himself the one who eats; therefore, brahmin, the food offered there is rare even for the gods.

Verse 9 (padma.7.18.9)

haribhuktāvaśiṣṭaṁ yatpavitraṁ bhuvi durllabham annaṁ ye bhuñjate lokāsteṣāṁ muktirna durllabhā

The remnant food left over from Hari's own meal — sacred and rare upon this earth — those who eat it find liberation no longer hard to attain.

Verse 10 (padma.7.18.10)

brahmādyāstridaśāḥ sarve tadannamatidurllabham bhuñjate nityamāgatya mānuṣāṇāṁ ca kā kathā

Brahma and all the gods come there daily to eat that most rare food; what then need be said of mere humans?

Verse 11 (padma.7.18.11)

na yasya ramate cittaṁ tasminnanne sudurllabhe tameva viṣṇudveṣṭāraṁ prāhuḥ sarvamaharṣayaḥ

One whose mind takes no delight in that most rare food — him alone all the great sages declare to be a hater of Vishnu.

Verse 12 (padma.7.18.12)

pavitraṁ bhuvi sarvatra yathā gaṅgājalaṁ dvija tathā pavitraṁ sarvatra tadannaṁ pāpanāśanam

Brahmin, just as the water of the Ganga is pure everywhere on earth, so too is that food pure everywhere, and destructive of sin.

Verse 13 (padma.7.18.13)

tadannaṁ komalaṁ divyaṁ yadyapi dvijasattama kṛkacasyodaraprāyaṁ tathāpyaghavidāraṇe

Best of brahmins, though that food is soft and divine, still, in tearing apart sin, it is like the teeth of a saw.

Verse 14 (padma.7.18.14)

pūrvārjitāni pāpāni kṣayaṁ yāsyaṁti yasya vai bhaktiḥ pravartate yasya tasminnanne sudurllabhe

Only he whose sins accumulated in former births are about to be destroyed develops true devotion for that most rare food.

Verse 15 (padma.7.18.15)

bahujanmārjitaṁ puṇyaṁ yasya yāsyati saṁkṣayam tasminnanne dvijaśreṣṭha tasya bhaktirna jāyate

Best of brahmins, one whose merit, accumulated across many births, is about to run out — in him no devotion for that food ever arises.

Verse 16 (padma.7.18.16)

indradyumnasya sarasi mārkaṁḍeyahrade tathā rohiṇyāṁ ca samudre ca śvetagaṅgājaleṣu ca

In the lake of Indradyumna, in the pool of Markandeya, in the Rohini tank, in the ocean, and in the waters of the Shvetaganga —

Verse 17 (padma.7.18.17)

snānaṁ ye kurvate martyā bhaktibhāvasamanvitāḥ teṣāṁ na vidyate janma punarasminmahītale

— whatever mortals bathe there, filled with devotion, for them there exists no further birth upon this earth.

Verse 18 (padma.7.18.18)

lavaṇāṁbhonidhestoyaiḥ pitarastarpitā dvija sarvaduḥkhavinirmuktā vrajaṁti harimaṁdiram

Brahmin, the ancestors to whom offerings of water from that salt ocean are made, freed from every sorrow, go to Hari's own abode.

Verse 19 (padma.7.18.19)

tīrtharājaḥ samudro 'sau kīrtitastatvadarśibhiḥ tasmāttatra kṛtaṁ karma sarvamevākṣayaṁ bhavet

Seers of truth have proclaimed that ocean to be the king of sacred fords; therefore every act performed there becomes imperishable.

Verse 20 (padma.7.18.20)

pitrarcanaṁ tathā dānaṁ bhagavaccaraṇārcanam japa yajñaṁ tathānyacca tasminkṣetre manorame

Worship of the ancestors, charitable gifts, worship of the Lord's feet, japa, sacrifice, and whatever else is performed in that delightful field —

Verse 21 (padma.7.18.21)

yatkarma kurute martyo viṣṇuprīṇanahetave sarvamevākṣayaṁ tacca bhavennāstyatra saṁśayaḥ

— whatever act a man performs there for the sake of pleasing Vishnu, all of it becomes imperishable; of this there is no doubt.

Verse 22 (padma.7.18.22)

balabhadraṁ subhadrāṁ ca kṛṣṇaṁ ca kamalekṣaṇam ye mānavāḥ prapaśyaṁti teṣāṁ kiṁcinna durllabham

Whatever men behold Balabhadra, Subhadra, and lotus-eyed Krishna — for them nothing whatsoever remains hard to attain.

Verse 23 (padma.7.18.23)

adṛṣṭvā śrījagannāthaṁ subhadrāṁ ca balaṁ tathā mokṣaṁ na labhate martyaḥ kurvanpuṇyaśatānyapi

Without beholding Sri Jagannatha, Subhadra, and Balabhadra, a mortal, even performing hundreds of meritorious deeds, does not attain liberation.

Verse 24 (padma.7.18.24)

tatra vetraprahāreṇa śarīraṁ yasya lohitam taṁ vaṁdaṁte dvijaśreṣṭha devāḥ śakrādayo'khilāḥ

Best of brahmins, one whose body is bloodied there by the strokes of a cane — him all the gods, Indra foremost, bow down to honor.

Verse 25 (padma.7.18.25)

sthitvāṁtarikṣe śakrādyāḥ sarvadevagaṇā dvija vimānacāriṇo'nyonyaṁ pravadaṁtīti harṣitāḥ

Brahmin, standing in the sky, riding upon their heavenly chariots, all the hosts of gods, Indra among them, joyfully say to one another —

Verse 26 (padma.7.18.26)

kadā mānuṣyamasmabhyaṁ dāsyate kamalāpatiḥ manuṣya iva gacchāmastadā draṣṭuṁ hariṁ prabhum

— "When will the Consort of Lakshmi grant us a human birth, so that, like a human, we may go there to behold the Lord Hari?"

Verse 27 (padma.7.18.27)

kadā vetraprahāreṇa kṣetre śrīpuruṣottame bhaviṣyaṁtyasmadīyāni lohitāni vapūṁṣi ca

"When, in the field of Sri Purushottama, will our own bodies be bloodied by the strokes of the cane?"

Verse 28 (padma.7.18.28)

vāsavādyāḥ surāḥ sarve tasminkṣetre varaprade sadā vetraprahārāṁśca vāṁchaṁti dvijasattama

Best of brahmins, Indra and all the gods ever long, in that boon-granting field, for those very strokes of the cane.

Verse 29 (padma.7.18.29)

tatrākṣayavaṭaṁ ye tu bhaktyā paśyaṁti mānavāḥ koṭijanmārjitaiḥ pāpairmuktā yāṁti parāṁ gatim

Whatever men, with devotion, behold there the imperishable banyan tree — freed from the sins of millions of births, they attain the supreme goal.

Verse 30 (padma.7.18.30)

subhadrāṁ balabhadraṁ ca jagannāthamanāmayam śvetaṁ mādhavadeveśaṁ mārkaṁḍeyahradaṁ tathā

Subhadra, Balabhadra, the unblemished Jagannatha, the fair Madhava, Lord of gods, and the pool of Markandeya —

Verse 31 (padma.7.18.31)

jyāmeśvaraṁ hanūmaṁtaṁ tatrākṣayyaṁ vaṭaṁ dvija paśyaṁti bhaktyā ye martyāsteṣāṁ muktirhi śāśvatī

— Jyameshvara (Shiva), Hanuman, and there the imperishable banyan tree — brahmin, whatever mortals behold these with devotion, their liberation is assuredly everlasting.

Verse 32 (padma.7.18.32)

dolāyamānaṁ govindaṁ phālgunemāsi tatra ye paśyaṁti mānavā bhaktyā teṣāṁ puṇyaṁ niśāmaya

Hear now the merit of those who, in the month of Phalguna, behold there, with devotion, Govinda swinging upon the swing.

Verse 33 (padma.7.18.33)

vimuktāḥ sakalaiḥ pāpairaṁte yāṁti harergṛham jñānaṁ saṁprāpya tatraiva mokṣaṁ yāṁti sudurllabham

Freed from every sin, they go at last to Hari's own abode; there, having attained knowledge, they reach that most rare liberation.

Verse 34 (padma.7.18.34)

cetrake māsi vāruṇyāṁ yo jagannāthamīkṣate sa mṛtaḥ praviśeddehaṁ jagannāthasya jaimine

Verse 39 (padma.7.18.39)

Whoever, in the month of Ashadha, beholds the Consort of Lakshmi and Balabhadra proceeding toward the Gundika pavilion — he is liberated, of this there is no doubt.

Verse 40 (padma.7.18.40)

yaḥ paśyati jagannāthaṁ rathasthaṁ kamalekṣaṇam tasya nāsti punarjanma saṁsāre sarvaduḥkhade

Whoever beholds lotus-eyed Jagannatha seated in his chariot — for him there is no rebirth in this world, so full of every sorrow.

Verse 41 (padma.7.18.41)

Verse 43 (padma.7.18.43)

An unfortunate woman, or one who bears but a single child and no more, if she beholds Subhadra, surely becomes beloved of her husband and blessed with many children.

Verse 44 (padma.7.18.44)

Whoever wishes to cross this ocean of worldly existence — so deep, so full of affliction, the very refuge of every grievous sin — let him go to that all-happiness-giving field named Purushottama, and behold there that supreme god, Purushottama himself.
