Kriya Khanda (Kriyayogasara) · Chapter 17
The Boon Granted to Bhadratanu in Purushottama-kshetra
Verse 1 (padma.7.17.1)
jaiminiruvāca- punareva guro brūhi māhātmyaṁ kamalāpateḥ hareḥ kathāmṛtaṁ pītvā tṛptirvai kasya jāyate
Jaimini said: Tell me once more, O Guru, the glory of the Lord of Lakshmi. Having drunk the nectar of Hari's story, who indeed ever feels satisfied?
Verse 2 (padma.7.17.2)
śrīvyāsa uvāca- tvattulyaḥ ko'pi saṁsāre sukṛtī na hi vidyate yataḥ keśavamāhātmyaṁ śrotumicchasi bhaktitaḥ
Sri Vyasa said: There is no one in this world as blessed as you, since you desire, with devotion, to hear the glory of Keshava.
Verse 3 (padma.7.17.3)
nārāyaṇakathā ramyā punātyevaṁ jagattrayam śrotāraṁ pṛcchakaṁ caiva vaktāraṁ ca dvijottama
The delightful story of Narayana thus purifies all three worlds — the listener, the questioner, and the speaker alike, O best of brahmins.
Verse 4 (padma.7.17.4)
śṛṇu lakṣmīpatervatsa māhātmyaṁ pāpanāśanam kathayāmi samāsena caturvargaphalapradam
Listen, my child, to the sin-destroying glory of the Lord of Lakshmi, which bestows the fruit of all four goals of life; I shall tell it in brief.
Verse 5 (padma.7.17.5)
bhaktyā paramayā viṣṇumekāhamapi yo'rcayet janmakoṭikṛtaṁ pāpaṁ sadyastasya hareddhariḥ
Whoever worships Vishnu with supreme devotion even for a single day — Hari at once removes the sins accumulated across millions of births.
Verse 6 (padma.7.17.6)
puṇyātmā sa kathaṁ martyo yena nārādhito hariḥ sa kathaṁ pātakī yasya bhaktirnārāyaṇe prabhau
How can a man be called virtuous if he has not worshipped Hari? And how can he be called a sinner whose devotion is fixed on Lord Narayana?
Verse 7 (padma.7.17.7)
asti sarvapuraśreṣṭhaṁ puruṣottamasaṁjñakam puraṁ sarvaguṇairyuktaṁ sarvadeva gaṇāśrayam
There exists a city, foremost of all cities, named Purushottama — endowed with every virtue and the refuge of all the hosts of gods.
Verse 8 (padma.7.17.8)
sarveṣāmeva tīrthānāṁ variṣṭhaṁ tannigadyate yatastasminpure ramye sākṣādvasati keśavaḥ
It is declared the foremost of all sacred places, for in that beautiful city Keshava himself dwells in visible form.
Verse 9 (padma.7.17.9)
tatra bhadratanurnāma pūrvameko'bhavaddvijaḥ sundaraḥ priyavādī ca pavitrakulasaṁbhavaḥ
There, in former times, lived a brahmin named Bhadratanu — handsome, sweet of speech, and born into a pure lineage.
Verse 10 (padma.7.17.10)
saṁprāptayauvano vipraḥ suṁdaraḥ kāmamohitaḥ paralokabhayaṁ tyaktvā vārastrīnirato'bhavat
Reaching youth, the handsome brahmin was deluded by desire; abandoning fear of the world to come, he became devoted to a courtesan.
Verse 11 (padma.7.17.11)
na vedādhyayanaṁ cakre purāṇāni ca sarvaśaḥ tatyājottamasaṁjñāṁ ca pākhaṁḍajanasaṅgamāt
He gave up the study of the Vedas and the Puranas altogether; through the company of hypocrites he abandoned even his noble (brahminical) identity.
Verse 12 (padma.7.17.12)
ayājyadānagrāhī ca paradravyāpahārakaḥ abhavaddharmanindī ca sa vipraḥ pāpatatparaḥ
He took gifts from those unfit to give, seized others' wealth, and reviled dharma — that brahmin became wholly given over to sin.
Verse 13 (padma.7.17.13)
tatyāja brāhmaṇācāraṁ tathaiva satyabhāvanam gurūṇāmatithīnāṁ ca pūjanaṁ brāhmaṇādhamaḥ
That degraded brahmin abandoned proper brahminical conduct, truthfulness, and the honoring of elders and guests alike.
Verse 14 (padma.7.17.14)
yadyatpāpataraṁ karma tattadeva vidhīyate na ca puṇyatamaṁ karma kadācittena jaimine
O Jaimini, whatever act was most sinful, that alone he performed; he never once did any truly meritorious deed.
Verse 15 (padma.7.17.15)
ekadā kṛtapāpo'sau lokalajjābhayānvitaḥ śrāddhaṁ cakāra vipro vai śrāddhabhaktivivarjitaḥ
Once, out of fear of social shame, that sinful brahmin performed the ancestral rite (shraddha), though devoid of any devotion to it.
Verse 16 (padma.7.17.16)
vāranārīmiti prāha gataḥ sa niśi tadgṛham brāhmaṇa uvāca- etadviśālajaghane pitṛśrāddhadinaṁ mama
He went by night to the courtesan's house and said this. The brahmin said: O broad-hipped one, today is my father's shraddha day,
Verse 17 (padma.7.17.17)
āyātastvadguṇairbaddhastathāpi nilayaṁ tava paśya rātrimimāṁ kāṁte sarvalokabhayāvahām
yet, bound by your charms, I have still come to your dwelling. See, my beloved, how this night terrifies the whole world —
Verse 18 (padma.7.17.18)
sravadaṁbudasaṁghātaṁ parivyāptaṁ nabhaḥsthalāt navāṁbuluptamārgāyāṁ tvadguṇākṛṣṭamānasaḥ
rain-streaming clouds spread across the sky, the paths lost beneath fresh floods — yet my mind, drawn by your charms, has come.
Verse 19 (padma.7.17.19)
asyāmapi vibhāvaryāṁ tavāhaṁ gṛhamāgataḥ meghavidyutpratīpena kāmenārthopadeśinā
Even on this fearsome night I have come to your house, driven by desire — fierce as the lightning in the clouds, and full of its own persuasive logic.
Verse 20 (padma.7.17.20)
tvadguṇādhyānaviśvāsa āgato'haṁ niśi priye tvāmadṛṣṭvā kṣaṇamapi prītirme nahi jāyate
Trusting in the thought of your charms, I have come by night, beloved; without seeing you, I feel no joy even for a moment.
Verse 21 (padma.7.17.21)
api duḥkhena he tanvi tvāṁ draṣṭumahamāgataḥ tīrthatoyābhiṣekena kāṁte kiṁ me prayojanam
Even through hardship, slender one, I have come to see you. What use to me, beloved, is bathing in the waters of sacred fords?
Verse 22 (padma.7.17.22)
tvatprematīrthatoyena siktaḥ prāpto'smyahaṁ divi paratra sukhadāṁ sevāmārādhya mama kiṁ phalam
Bathed in the sacred water of your love, I have already reached heaven; what fruit is there for me in worshipping some pleasure promised in the next world?
Verse 23 (padma.7.17.23)
jīvataiva mayā svargaḥ prāpyate tvatprasādataḥ apakīrtibhayātkāṁte śrāddhakarmakṛtaṁ gṛhe
While still living, by your grace, I have already attained heaven. It was only from fear of disgrace, beloved, that I performed the shraddha rite at home.
Verse 24 (padma.7.17.24)
asmiñchrāddhe mama śraddhā svalpāpi na hi gamyate tvaṁ me japastapastvaṁ me tvaṁ me nītiśca sundari
In that rite I had not the slightest true devotion. You alone, lovely one, are my prayer, my penance, my very code of conduct.
Verse 25 (padma.7.17.25)
tvāmekāmeva saṁsāre sarvabhāvena sundari prapanno'si sadā'haṁ te ājñāpaya karomi kim
You alone in all this world, lovely one, have I taken as my whole refuge, with my whole being. Command me — what shall I do?
Verse 26 (padma.7.17.26)
sumadhyamovāca- tvayā putreṇa tātastu putrahīna ivābhavat pitṛśrāddhadine'pi tvaṁ maithunaṁ karttumicchasi
The slender-waisted woman said: Though his son, you have made your father as good as sonless — even on his own shraddha day you seek out union with a woman!
Verse 27 (padma.7.17.27)
durmate maithunaṁ yastu kurute pitṛvāsare retobhojina eva syuḥ pitarastasya so'pi ca
O foolish one, whoever engages in sexual union on the ancestors' day — his forefathers, and he himself, become reduced to feeding on mere semen instead of the offering.
Verse 28 (padma.7.17.28)
kurute maithunaṁ mūḍho mohātpitṛdine yadi tacchrāddhaṁ rākṣasagrāhyaṁ bhavennāstyatra saṁśayaḥ
If a fool, out of delusion, unites with a woman on the ancestors' day, his shraddha offering is seized by demons instead — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 29 (padma.7.17.29)
mayyaddhā gaditaṁ yatte yathā snehena mānasam tathā yadi bhavedviṣṇau tadā prāpnoti kiṁ nahi
The love which your heart has so openly declared to me — if that same love were directed toward Vishnu instead, what would you not attain?
Verse 30 (padma.7.17.30)
yamadaṁḍāṁtarasthāyi jīvitaṁ ca śarīriṇām tathāpi pātakaṁ mūḍha kuruṣe nirbhayaḥ sadā
The life of every embodied being hangs merely in the interval before Yama's rod falls, yet still, fool, you commit sin without fear.
Verse 31 (padma.7.17.31)
jalabudbudavanmūḍhaḥ kṣaṇavidhvaṁsi jīvitam kimarthaṁ śāśvatadhiyā kuruṣecchuritaṁ sadā
Fool, life is as fleeting as a water-bubble, destroyed in an instant — why then do you always act as though it were eternal, filling it with sin?
Verse 32 (padma.7.17.32)
lalāṭe likhitaṁ yasya mṛtyurityakṣaradvayam sa kathaṁ kurute pāpaṁ samastakleśadāyakam
One on whose forehead the two syllables "death" are already written — how can such a person still commit sin, the giver of every sorrow?
Verse 33 (padma.7.17.33)
aho māyā mahāviṣṇorekā balavatī kṣitau yataḥ pāpaṁ prakurvāṇaḥ satataṁ harṣito dvija
Ah, how powerful indeed is the illusion (maya) of Maha-Vishnu upon this earth, O brahmin, that a man remains ever pleased even while continually committing sin!
Verse 34 (padma.7.17.34)
sthānaṁ pāpāya me dehi nijadehe durāśraye dahatyāśramamedho hi vītihotra iva jvalan
"Give room for sin within your own wretched body" — thus it burns, like a blazing fire consuming the very hermitage of one's life.
Verse 35 (padma.7.17.35)
vyāsa uvāca- daivapreritapāpācca tayetyuktaṁ suveśyayā manasā ciṁtayāmāsa brāhmaṇaḥ kṛtapātakaḥ
Vyasa said: When the beautiful courtesan, moved by fate, had spoken thus, that sinful brahmin began to reflect within his own mind.
Verse 36 (padma.7.17.36)
dhigdhiṅmāṁ ca mahāpāpaṁ mūḍhaṁ pātakināṁ varam veśyāyā eva tajjñānaṁ tanme nāsti durātmanaḥ
"Shame, shame upon me — a great sinner, a fool, foremost among the wicked! Such wisdom exists even in a courtesan, yet I, wretched soul, lack it entirely."
Verse 37 (padma.7.17.37)
brāhmaṇasya kule śuddhe janma saṁprāpya vai mayā ātmaghātakaraṁ pāpaṁ nityameva kṛtaṁ mahat
"Though born into a pure brahmin lineage, I have done nothing but commit great, self-destroying sins, day after day."
Verse 38 (padma.7.17.38)
jāto yadā dhruvo mṛtyurmṛte svāmī yadā yamaḥ avivekatayā pāpaṁ kathaṁ tarhi karomyaham
"The moment one is born, death is certain; and once dead, Yama alone is master — why then, through sheer lack of discernment, do I go on sinning?"
Verse 39 (padma.7.17.39)
japastapastathā homo vedādhyayanameva ca viprācāro'titheḥ pūjā gurubhaktirdvijārcanam
"Prayer, penance, fire-oblation, Vedic study, proper brahminical conduct, honoring guests, devotion to the guru, reverence for brahmins —"
Verse 40 (padma.7.17.40)
pitṛyajñādikaṁ karma pūjā ca kamalāpateḥ mayā na cakre kasmādvai bhaviṣyatyuttamā gatiḥ
"the ancestral rites, and worship of the Lord of Lakshmi — none of these have I ever done; how then shall I attain a good end?"
Verse 41 (padma.7.17.41)
mārkaṁḍeyaṁ mahātmānaṁ sarvadharmavidāṁ varam tuṣṭāva sa dvijo vācā praṇamya bhuvi daṇḍavat
(So thinking,) that brahmin bowed to the ground in full prostration before the great sage Markandeya, foremost among knowers of all dharma, and praised him aloud.
Verse 42 (padma.7.17.42)
brāhmaṇa uvāca- namastubhyaṁ dvijaśreṣṭha dīrghajīvanamo'stute nārāyaṇasvarūpāya namastubhyaṁ mahātmane
The brahmin said: Homage to you, best of brahmins — may you have long life. Homage to you, great soul, who are the very form of Narayana.
Verse 43 (padma.7.17.43)
namo mṛkaṇḍaputrāya sarvalokahitaiṣiṇe jñānārṇavāya vai tubhyaṁ nirvikārāya vai namaḥ
Homage to the son of Mrikandu, who wishes well for every world; homage to you, ocean of knowledge, ever unchanging.
Verse 44 (padma.7.17.44)
stutasteneti vipreṇa mārkaṁḍeyo mahātapāḥ uvāca paramaprītaḥ sarvaśāstrārthapāragaḥ
Thus praised by that brahmin, the great ascetic Markandeya, master of the meaning of every scripture, spoke, greatly pleased.
Verse 45 (padma.7.17.45)
mārkaṁḍeya uvāca- tava bhaktyā'tituṣṭo'smi mahābhāga varaṁ vṛṇu tavābhilaṣitaṁ sadyaḥ sādhayiṣyāmi nānyathā
Markandeya said: O most fortunate one, I am deeply pleased by your devotion — ask a boon. I shall grant your wish at once, without fail.
Verse 46 (padma.7.17.46)
brāhmaṇa uvāca- ahaṁ pāpātmanāṁ śreṣṭho dvijācāravivarjitaḥ parahiṁsānvito nityaṁ parastrīnirataḥ sadā
The brahmin said: I am foremost among sinners, devoid of proper brahminical conduct — ever given to harming others, ever attached to another's wife.
Verse 47 (padma.7.17.47)
mayā mūḍhena viprendra sadā pāpaṁ kṛtaṁ mahat nāmutrāpi kṛtaṁ puṇyaṁ kadācidapi sādaram
O foremost of brahmins, I, in my folly, have always done great sin; never once, not even for the sake of the next world, have I performed any good deed with true devotion.
Verse 48 (padma.7.17.48)
saṁsārasāgare ghore duḥkhade'tyaṁta bhairave kathaṁ bhavati nistāro mahāpātakino mama
How, in this terrible, sorrow-filled, most fearsome ocean of worldly existence, shall a great sinner like me ever find deliverance?
Verse 49 (padma.7.17.49)
mārkaṁḍeya uvāca- kṛtapāpo'pi viprendra tvaṁ hi puṇyātmanāṁ varaḥ yato buddhiriyaṁ jātā tvayi saṁsāradurllabhā
Markandeya said: O foremost of brahmins, even having sinned, you are truly among the best of the virtuous — for this understanding has arisen in you, which is rare indeed in this world.
Verse 50 (padma.7.17.50)
puṇyātmanāṁ puṇyadṛṣṭirvardhate prativāsaram pāpātmanāṁ pāpadṛṣṭirvarddhate tu dinedine
In the virtuous, the inclination toward virtue grows day by day; in sinners, the inclination toward sin likewise grows day by day.
Verse 51 (padma.7.17.51)
pāpatmanāpi bhavatā pāpadṛṣṭirnivāryate atastubhyaṁ jagannāthaḥ prasanna iva lakṣyate
Even as a sinner, you have managed to check that inclination toward sin — therefore the Lord of the world appears already pleased with you.
Verse 52 (padma.7.17.52)
pāpaṁ kṛtvāpi yo martyaḥ pāpādbhūyo nivartate tamuttaraṁ naraṁ prāhuḥ pūrvajanmārcitācyutam
A man who, having sinned, then turns away from sin again — such a man the wise call "redeemed," one who worshipped the Imperishable in a former birth.
Verse 53 (padma.7.17.53)
nijabhaktaṁ mahāviṣṇurdṛṣṭvā pāparataṁ prabhuḥ dadāti vipulāṁ buddhiṁ yathā bhavati sadgatiḥ
Seeing even his own devotee caught in sin, Lord Maha-Vishnu grants him abundant wisdom, so that he may still attain a good end.
Verse 54 (padma.7.17.54)
Therefore, best of brahmins, you have worshipped the Imperishable across many births; very soon your welfare will surely come — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 55 (padma.7.17.55)
yadyatpṛṣṭaṁ tvayā vipra mattaḥ śroṣyasi taṁ nahi yato nityakriyākālo mama saṁprati vartate
Brahmin, what you have asked, you shall not hear from me just now, for this is presently the time for my daily rites.
Verse 56 (padma.7.17.56)
dāṁtonāma dvijaḥ kaścidasti sarvārthatatvavit kathayiṣyati tatsarvaṁ sa ca tasyāśramaṁ vraja
There is a brahmin named Danta, who knows the truth of all things; he will tell you everything — go to his hermitage.
Verse 57 (padma.7.17.57)
tenopadiṣṭo'sau vipro mārkaṁḍeyena dhīmatā dāṁtāśramaṁ yayau kṣipraṁ pavitramatisundaram
Instructed thus by the wise Markandeya, that brahmin quickly went to Danta's hermitage, exceedingly pure and beautiful.
Verse 58 (padma.7.17.58)
aśvatthaiścaṁpakaiścaiva bakulaiḥ priyakaistathā anyaiśca puṣpitairvṛkṣaiḥ śobhitaṁ sumanoharam
It was adorned, and utterly enchanting, with ashvattha, champaka, bakula, and priyaka trees, and many other trees in flower.
Verse 59 (padma.7.17.59)
praphullakusumāmodaṁ parivyāptadigaṁtaram guñjadbhramarasaṁghātaṁ phalaśabdātiśabditam
The fragrance of blossoming flowers spread to every horizon; it echoed with swarms of humming bees and with the sound of falling fruit.

What more need be said here? Before your very sight, all the sins accumulated across my many births have been utterly destroyed.
Verse 188 (padma.7.17.188)

kṛtārtho'smi kṛtārtho'smi kṛtārtho'smi na saṁśayaḥ namastubhyaṁ namastubhyaṁ namastubhyaṁ jagatpate
I am fulfilled, I am fulfilled, I am fulfilled — of this there is no doubt. Homage to you, homage to you, homage to you, O Lord of the world.
Verse 189 (padma.7.17.189)
ityuktvā'sau dvijo bhaktyā pulakāṁcitavigrahaḥ papāta jaimine viṣṇoścārupādāṁbujadvaye
O Jaimini, having said this, that brahmin, his body thrilling with devotion, fell prostrate at Vishnu's two beautiful lotus feet.
Verse 190 (padma.7.17.190)

The Blessed Lord said: Rise, rise, brahmin! I am pleased by your devotion. Tell me what you desire — I shall surely grant it to you.
Verse 191 (padma.7.17.191)

Bhadratanu said: O Supreme Lord Govinda, O merciful one, O supreme Imperishable One, who else on this earth could ever attain what I have just now attained?
Verse 192 (padma.7.17.192)

tathāpyekaṁ varaṁ yāce murāre tava sannidhau janmajanmanime bhaktistvayyastu sudṛḍhā prabho
Yet, O foe of Mura, in your very presence I ask one boon — Lord, may my firm devotion to you remain, birth after birth.
Verse 193 (padma.7.17.193)
mayā kṛtamidaṁ stotraṁ yaḥ paṭhedbhaktito naraḥ tasyābhilaṣitaṁ sarvaṁ prasannastvaṁ pradāsyasi
And whoever recites this hymn composed by me, with devotion — may you, pleased, grant that person all that he desires.
Verse 194 (padma.7.17.194)
śrībhagavānuvāca- datto'yaṁ te varaḥ ko'pi vipra nāstyatra saṁśayaḥ kiṁtu tvayā saha prājña sakhyaṁ kartuṁ mayeṣyate
The Blessed Lord said: This boon is granted to you, brahmin, without any doubt. But, wise one, I wish to form a bond of friendship with you.
Verse 195 (padma.7.17.195)
na me sevakayogyāste bhavānahamiha dvija ataḥ sakhyaṁ pravivṛtaṁ tvayā saha mayādhunā
You are not fit to be a mere servant of mine, brahmin — here you and I stand as equals; therefore I now openly extend friendship to you.
Verse 196 (padma.7.17.196)
vyāsa uvāca- tato nārāyaṇo devo dayālurbhaktavatsalaḥ cakāra jaimine sakhyaṁ tena puṇyātmanā saha
Vyasa said: O Jaimini, then the merciful god Narayana, who cherishes his devotees, formed a bond of friendship with that virtuous soul.
Verse 197 (padma.7.17.197)
nijakaṇṭhagatāṁ mālāṁ dadau tasmai mudā hariḥ so'pi vipro dadau bhaktyā harestulasikāsrajam
Hari joyfully gave him the garland from around his own neck, and the brahmin, in turn, devotedly offered Hari a garland of tulasi.
Verse 198 (padma.7.17.198)
prasārya caturo bāhūṁstamāliṁgitavānhariḥ sa vipro'pi mudā viṣṇuṁ tamāliṁgitavānprabhuḥ
Hari, spreading out his four arms, embraced him, and the brahmin too, joyfully, embraced the Lord Vishnu.
Verse 199 (padma.7.17.199)
itthaṁ kṛtvā hariḥ sakhyaṁ tenāgrajanmanā saha bhaktigrāhī dayāluḥ sa tatraivāṁtaradhīyata
Having thus formed this friendship with that brahmin, Hari — merciful, ever receptive to devotion — vanished from that very place.
Verse 200 (padma.7.17.200)
tataḥ pratidinaṁ tatra kṣetre ca puruṣottame ārebhe kaṁdukakrīḍāṁ haristenāgrajanmanā
After that, in that field of Purushottama, Hari began, each and every day, to play at ball together with that brahmin.
Verse 201 (padma.7.17.201)
kadāciddurbalaṁ dṛṣṭvā taṁ vipraṁ karuṇāmayaḥ uvāca vācaṁ viprarṣemitravātsalyato hariḥ
Once, seeing that brahmin grown weak, the compassionate Hari spoke to him, out of the fondness of friendship.
Verse 202 (padma.7.17.202)
śrībhagavānuvāca- sakhe kathaṁ durbalastvaṁ hṛtaṁ kena dhanaṁ tava hṛdi kā vā ca te cintā sakhe tadvaktumarhasi
The Blessed Lord said: Friend, why are you so weak? Who has taken your wealth? What worry lies in your heart? You should tell me, friend.
Verse 203 (padma.7.17.203)
bhadratanuruvāca- tvatprītaye jagannātha nityameva mayā tapaḥ kriyate tena me gātraṁ yāti durbalatāṁ prabho
Bhadratanu said: Lord of the world, to please you I perform penance every single day; because of that, my Lord, my body has grown weak.
Verse 204 (padma.7.17.204)
śrībhagavānuvāca- yathā tvayi prasanno'smi kasmiṁśca na tathā sakhe kāyakleśaṁ punaḥ kasmātkaroṣi dvijasattama
The Blessed Lord said: Friend, I am pleased with you as with no one else; then why, best of brahmins, do you keep tormenting your body?
Verse 205 (padma.7.17.205)
durbalaṁ tvāṁ samālokya hṛdi me jāyate vyathā kāyakleśamataḥ sarvaṁ jahīhi dvijasattama
Seeing you so weak, pain arises in my own heart; therefore, best of brahmins, give up entirely this torment of the body.
Verse 206 (padma.7.17.206)
Then the Lord of the gods himself adorned that brahmin with his own upper garment, his own robes and ornaments, his lovely golden earrings, and the bracelets that graced his own arms.
Verse 207 (padma.7.17.207)
kirīṭamānīya nijāllalāṭātpādācca pādāṁgadayugmamīśaḥ suvarṇahāraṁ nijakaṁṭhadeśāttasmai dadau vipravarāya kṛṣṇaḥ
Lord Krishna took the crown from his own forehead, the pair of anklets from his own feet, and the golden necklace from around his own throat, and gave them all to that best of brahmins.
Verse 208 (padma.7.17.208)
tairbhūṣaṇaiḥ śrīhariṇā pradattairvibhūṣito'yaṁ sukṛtī dvijanmā krīḍetsadā kaṁdukakelivettā kṛṣṇena kṛṣṇāṁbujasuṁdareṇa
Adorned with those ornaments given by Sri Hari, that meritorious, twice-born man, skilled in the game of ball, would ever play together with Krishna, dark and lovely as a lotus.
Verse 209 (padma.7.17.209)
tamekadā bhūṣaṇabhūṣitāḍgaṁ tāṁbūlarāgāruciroṣṭhayugmam divyāṁbaraṁ cārutarottarīyaṁ smerānanaṁ tatra dadarśa dāṁtaḥ
One day Danta saw him there — his limbs adorned with ornaments, his two lips lovely, reddened with betel, in divine robes, a most beautiful upper garment, his face wreathed in smiles.
Verse 210 (padma.7.17.210)
dāṁta uvāca- bhadra bhadratano'dyāpi pāpadṛṣṭiṁ na muṁcasi dṛṣṭvāpi bhavataḥ kāryaṁ niṁditaṁ sakalairjanaiḥ
Danta said: Good Bhadratanu, even now you have not given up your sinful outlook! Seeing this conduct of yours, everyone would surely condemn it.
Verse 211 (padma.7.17.211)
śiṣyaḥ kṛtastvaṁ yasmānme sarvameva hi bhūṣaṇam ahaṁyuścāpi duḥśīlo nirdayaḥ pāpatatparaḥ
Since you became my disciple, all this ornament-wearing is unbecoming; the arrogant, the ill-mannered, the merciless, the sin-inclined —
Verse 212 (padma.7.17.212)
gurukīrtivināśī ca paṁcaite śiṣyapāṁsulāḥ abhakto bahubhāṣī ca tathā caṁcalamānasaḥ
— and the one who destroys his guru's reputation — these five are the disgrace of disciples; the undevoted, the talkative, and the fickle-minded —
Verse 213 (padma.7.17.213)
parokṣaguruniṁdākṛtproktāḥ śiṣyādhamā ime caritramuttamaṁ jñātvā śiṣyaḥ kāryo vicakṣaṇaiḥ
— and one who reviles his guru behind his back — these are called the lowest of disciples. The wise should accept someone as a disciple only after knowing his character to be excellent.
Verse 214 (padma.7.17.214)
yato durjanagā vidyā gurūṇāṁ cāpi duḥkhadā kīrtidāstaiśca yā vidyā niruktāstatvadarśibhiḥ
For learning given to a wicked person brings sorrow even to the teacher; the seers of truth have declared that learning given to the worthy alone brings true fame —
Verse 215 (padma.7.17.215)
tā vai durjanagāḥ sadyo gurorghnaṁti yaśastarum pāpebhyaḥ puṇyakarmāṇi na rocaṁte kadāpi ca
— while that same learning, given to the wicked, instantly cuts down the tree of the teacher's fame. To sinners, meritorious deeds never give any pleasure.
Verse 216 (padma.7.17.216)
na rocate makṣikābhyaḥ sugandhicaṁdanaṁ yathā yathā miṣṭānnapānena na hi tṛpyaṁti gardabhā
Just as flies take no pleasure in fragrant sandalwood, and just as donkeys are not satisfied by sweet food and drink —
Verse 217 (padma.7.17.217)
durjanā na hi tṛpyaṁti yathā dharmasya ciṁtayā apakīrtibhayāllakṣmīrdharmaśca sarvakāmadaḥ
— so too the wicked take no satisfaction in reflecting on dharma. One should hold to dharma out of fear of disgrace; for it is dharma, together with Lakshmi, that fulfills every desire.
Verse 218 (padma.7.17.218)
kadācinna bhajedduṣṭaṁ bhajedvā gacchati kṣayam pratijanmani yā vidyā bhāgyena labhate parā
One should never serve the wicked; and if one does, that service comes to nothing. The supreme learning that carries over birth after birth is obtained only through good fortune —
Verse 219 (padma.7.17.219)
kadācillabhate vāpi tadā tvaṁ tarate vidhiḥ
— and only when it is at last obtained, in this way, does one at last cross over, by that very destiny.
Verse 220 (padma.7.17.220)
bhadratanuruvāca- satyaṁ bravīṣi viprarṣe nāsmi śāstraviśāradaḥ mayā śiṣyeṇa te kvāpi nāpakīrtirbhaviṣyati
Bhadratanu said: Sage among brahmins, you speak truly — I am no scholar of the scriptures. But because of me, your disciple, no disgrace will ever come to you.
Verse 221 (padma.7.17.221)
tvatprasādāddivajaśreṣṭha sarvābhilaṣitaṁ mama siddhiṁ pratigataṁ yasmāttvameko bhuvi durllabhaḥ
Best of brahmins, by your grace all my desires have been fulfilled; therefore you alone are rare indeed upon this earth.
Verse 222 (padma.7.17.222)
dāṁta uvāca- kiṁ te'bhilaṣitaṁ vipra siddhiṁ pratigataṁ vada acireṇaiva tapasāṁ kathamudyāpanaṁ kṛtam
Danta said: Brahmin, tell me — what desire of yours has been fulfilled? How, in so short a time, have you already completed the conclusion of your austerities?
Verse 223 (padma.7.17.223)
bhadratanuruvāca- svalpaśramairapi prāptaṁ mayā saṁdarśanaṁ hareḥ yasyājñayā guro tyaktaṁ mayā nityakriyādikam
Bhadratanu said: Guru, with very little effort I obtained the vision of Hari, and by his own command I gave up even my daily rites.
Verse 224 (padma.7.17.224)
nijottarīyaṁ vastraṁ ca suvarṇakalaśadvayam svahastavalayaṁ cāpi svalalāṭakirīṭakam
He gave me his own upper garment, a pair of golden ornaments, the bracelets from his own arms, and the crown from his own forehead —
Verse 225 (padma.7.17.225)
nijapādatulākoṭiṁ nijamuktāvalīṁ dadau tathā me bhagavānviṣṇuḥ suprīto dvijasattama
— and his own anklets, and his own string of pearls, all these he gave me. Best of brahmins, Lord Vishnu was thus deeply pleased with me.
Verse 226 (padma.7.17.226)
mayā saha sa kṛtvāste sakhyaṁ sevakaduḥkhahā karomi kaṁdukākrīḍāṁ guro tena sahāniśam
He, remover of his servants' sorrow, has formed a bond of friendship with me; and, guru, I play at ball with him constantly, day and night.
Verse 227 (padma.7.17.227)
etanme vacanaṁ śrutvā gacchāmi na hi yadyapi pratītyā ca mayā proktaṁ tathāpi tava sannidhau
Though hearing this, I would still never go anywhere without your leave, yet, in trust, I have told all this in your presence.
Verse 228 (padma.7.17.228)
dāṁta uvāca- saptavarṣasahasrāṇi bhaktyā paramayā mayā ārādhito'pi me viṣṇurdarśanaṁ na dadau vibhuḥ
Danta said: For seven thousand years I have worshipped with the utmost devotion, and yet the all-powerful Vishnu has never granted me his vision.
Verse 229 (padma.7.17.229)
aho viṣṇuṁ samārādhya paṁcāhānyeva sattama tvayā saṁdarśanaṁ prāptaṁ daivatairapi durllabham
Ah, good sir, by worshipping Vishnu for a mere five days, you have obtained that very vision which even the gods find hard to attain!
Verse 230 (padma.7.17.230)
You are blessed, you are truly fulfilled, you may rightly be called a god in visible form — for the Lord himself has, out of love, formed a bond of friendship with you.
Verse 231 (padma.7.17.231)
yadā mayi tava sneho vidyate dvijasattama kathaṁ kathaya me vipra durllabhaṁ viṣṇudarśanam
Best of brahmins, if you truly have affection for me, then, brahmin, tell me — how may I too attain that rare vision of Vishnu?
Verse 232 (padma.7.17.232)
vyāsa uvāca- ityukto guruṇā vipro vipine nijamāśramam jagāma vismito dhīmānviṣṇubhaktiparāyaṇaḥ
Vyasa said: When his guru had spoken thus, that wise brahmin, devoted wholly to Vishnu, went off, astonished, to his own hermitage in the forest.
Verse 233 (padma.7.17.233)
athānyasmindine gatvā kaṁdukakrīḍanaṁ kṛtam uvāceti jagannāthaṁ dayāluṁ vinayānvitaḥ
Then, on another day, going there and playing at ball, he spoke, with all humility, to the merciful Lord of the world.
Verse 234 (padma.7.17.234)
bhadratanuruvāca- gururhi mama deveṁdra tava darśanamicchati kājñā te tiṣṭhato brūhi dayālo kamalāpate
Bhadratanu said: O Lord of gods, my own guru wishes for your vision. Merciful Consort of Lakshmi, tell me — what is your command in this?
Verse 235 (padma.7.17.235)
ekāṁtabhakto vipro'sau tava padmanibhekṣaṇa atastasmai suraśreṣṭha darśanaṁ dātumarhasi
O lotus-eyed one, that brahmin is your single-minded devotee; therefore, best of gods, it is fitting that you grant him your vision.
Verse 236 (padma.7.17.236)
śrībhagavānuvāca- anekajanma viprendra bhaktyā paramayā tvayā pūjito'hamato dattaṁ darśanaṁ te mayā'dhunā
The Blessed Lord said: Foremost of brahmins, across many births you have worshipped me with the utmost devotion — that is why I have granted you my vision now.
Verse 237 (padma.7.17.237)
katiciddivasāṁtena māmabhyarcya dvijaḥ sa ca māṁ draṣṭumicchati prājñastvadṛśyaṁ daivatairapi
After worshipping me for only a few days, that wise brahmin wishes to see me — me, who am unseen even by the gods.
Verse 238 (padma.7.17.238)
mama so'pi mahābhakto matsaparyāparāyaṇaḥ mama saṁdarśanaṁ tasmātkadāciddvija lapsyati
He too is a great devotee of mine, devoted entirely to my service; therefore, brahmin, he shall surely obtain my vision at some time.
Verse 239 (padma.7.17.239)
vyāsa uvāca- iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā sa vipraḥ kamalāpatim ityuvāca punarbhaktyā keśavaṁ kleśanāśanam
Vyasa said: Hearing his words, that brahmin again spoke, with devotion, to Keshava, the Consort of Lakshmi, destroyer of every affliction.
Verse 240 (padma.7.17.240)
bhadratanuruvāca- anugrahosti deveśa yadā mayi jagatpate tadā me saṁmukhe dehi darśanaṁ bhaktavatsala
Bhadratanu said: Lord of gods, Lord of the world, if you truly have grace toward me, then, cherisher of your devotees, grant your vision directly before my guru.
Verse 241 (padma.7.17.241)
ayācata gururdeva tava darśanadakṣiṇām aho me gurave datvā darśanaṁ pāhi māṁ prabho
My guru, O god, has asked of me the very "gift" of your vision. Lord, by granting my guru that vision, protect me as well.
Verse 242 (padma.7.17.242)
śrībhagavānuvāca- yadā nūnaṁ tvayotsṛṣṭā matsaṁdarśanadakṣiṇā tadā guruṁ samānīya darśanaṁ mama kāraya
The Blessed Lord said: Since you have indeed pledged my very vision as a gift, bring your guru here, and let him behold me.
Verse 243 (padma.7.17.243)
ityājñaptastatastena gurorāśramamuttamam yayau bhadratanuḥ prītyā punaḥ svagururāgataḥ
Thus commanded, Bhadratanu joyfully went again to his guru's excellent hermitage, and came back bringing his own guru with him.
Verse 244 (padma.7.17.244)
tasminvipre samāyāte dānte dātṛvare hariḥ ātmānaṁ darśayāmāsa sarvalakṣaṇasaṁyutam
When that brahmin Danta, greatest among givers, had arrived, Hari showed him his own form, complete with every mark of divinity.
Verse 245 (padma.7.17.245)
tato hariṁ samālokya sa vipro haribhaktikṛt baddhāñjalistamastauṣīddharṣabāṣpavilocanaḥ
Then, beholding Hari, that brahmin, devoted wholly to Hari, his eyes brimming with tears of joy, joined his palms and began to praise him.
Verse 246 (padma.7.17.246)
dāṁta uvāca- dayālo kamalākāṁta śaraṇāgatapālaka namastubhyaṁ namastubhyaṁ namastubhyaṁ namonamaḥ
Danta said: O merciful one, beloved of Lakshmi, protector of those who take refuge in you — homage to you, homage to you, homage to you, again and again.
Verse 247 (padma.7.17.247)
adya me saphalaṁ janma adya me saphalaṁ tapaḥ adya me saphalaṁ sarvaṁ prāptaṁ tvaddarśanaṁ mayā
Today my birth has borne fruit, today my penance has borne fruit, today everything of mine has borne fruit — for I have obtained your vision.
Verse 248 (padma.7.17.248)
pūrvamālocitaṁ yadyadvacanaṁ śrīpate prabho siṁdhukoṭigabhīrasya prasṛtaṁ puratastava
O Lord, Consort of Shri, whatever words, first carefully considered, I have uttered before you — you, deeper than millions of oceans —
Verse 249 (padma.7.17.249)
stotraṁ tannāsti saṁsāre vāgīśasya jagatpateḥ yena stotreṇa te prītiṁ janayiṣyāmi cetasi
Lord of the world, there exists in this world no hymn, not even of the very Lord of Speech, by which I could truly awaken delight in your heart.
Verse 250 (padma.7.17.250)
rakṣarakṣa prabho rakṣa māṁ prasīda jagatpate tvaddāsadāsadāsānāṁ dāsatvenāpi māṁ vṛṇu vyāsa uvāca- tataḥ prahasya deveśo bhaktigrāhī dayāmayaḥ karāraviṁdaṁ tanmūrdhni datvā prāheti jaimine
Protect me, protect me, Lord, protect me; be pleased, O Lord of the world. Accept me even as a servant of the servants of your own servants.
Verse 251 (padma.7.17.251)
śrībhagavānuvāca- madbhakto'si dvijaśreṣṭha prāptaṁ maddarśanaṁ tvayā matprasādena bhadraṁ te sarvameva bhaviṣyati
Vyasa said: O Jaimini, then the Lord of the gods, receiver of devotion, full of compassion, smiled, and, placing his lotus hand upon Danta's head, spoke thus.
Verse 252 (padma.7.17.252)
vyāsa uvāca- tamāliṅgya tato dāṁtaṁ premṇā bhadratanuṁ ca tam tatraivāṁtardadhe vipra sahasā parameśvara
The Blessed Lord said: Best of brahmins, you are my devotee, and you have now obtained my vision; by my grace, everything for you shall be well.
Verse 253 (padma.7.17.253)
tasminkṣetravare puṇye durllabhe puruṣottame kriyāyogairharindṛṣṭvā dāṁto dhāma paraṁ yayau
Vyasa said: Brahmin, then the Supreme Lord, embracing both Danta and Bhadratanu with love, suddenly vanished from that very place.
Verse 254 (padma.7.17.254)
so'pi bhadratanurvipro haribhaktiparāyaṇaḥ āyuṣoṁte yayau mokṣaṁ devānāmapi durllabham
In that excellent, sacred, rare field of Purushottama, having beheld Hari through the practice of kriya-yoga, Danta went to the supreme abode.
Verse 255 (padma.7.17.255)
ekāhamapi yo bhaktyā pūjayetparameśvaram bahujanmakṛtaṁ pāpaṁ prītiḥ saṁvarddhate harau
That brahmin Bhadratanu too, devoted wholly to Hari, at the end of his life attained that liberation which is hard to reach even for the gods.
Verse 256 (padma.7.17.256)
adyāpi tridaśāḥ sarve brahmādyā api jaimine prabhāvaṁ na hi jānaṁti haribhaktasya bhūtale
Whoever worships the Supreme Lord with devotion even for a single day — the sins of his many births are destroyed, and his love for Hari continues to grow.
Verse 257 (padma.7.17.257)
karmabhūmiriyaṁ vipra svargādapi ca durllabhā yatra viṣṇuṁ samabhyarcya martyāḥ syuḥ suravaṁditāḥ
O Jaimini, even to this day, all the gods, Brahma included, do not fully know the power of a devotee of Hari upon this earth.
Verse 258 (padma.7.17.258)
śakrādyāstridaśāḥ sarve supuṇyakṣayabhīravaḥ anyonyamapi jalpaṁto'niśaṁ ca dvijasattama
Brahmin, this land of action (the earth) is rarer even than heaven — for here, by duly worshipping Vishnu, mortals become worthy of homage even from the gods.
Verse 259 (padma.7.17.259)
bhūya eva gamiṣyāmaḥ karmabhūmiṁ kadā vayam kadā tatra kariṣyāmaḥ pūjāṁ śrīkamalāpateḥ
Best of brahmins, all the gods, Indra foremost among them, fearful of their own merit running out, constantly speak among themselves, day and night —
Verse 260 (padma.7.17.260)
atidhanyā ime lokā asmatto'pi mahattarāḥ durllabhe bhārate varṣe pūjayaṁti hariṁ prabhum
— "When shall we again go to that land of action? When shall we there perform worship of the glorious Consort of Lakshmi?"
Verse 261 (padma.7.17.261)
aho bhāratavarṣasya kaḥ śakto guṇabhāṣaṇe yatrārādhya hariṁ pūrvaṁ vayaṁ devatvamāgatāḥ
"Those people are exceedingly blessed, greater even than us, who in that rare land of Bharata worship the Lord Hari."
Verse 262 (padma.7.17.262)
itthaṁ devagaṇāḥ sarve vāsavādyā dvijottama nityaṁ bhāratabhūbhāgaṁ praśaṁsaṁti śubhapradam
"Ah, who indeed is able to describe the virtues of the land of Bharata, where, by worshipping Hari in a former time, we ourselves attained our very godhood?"
Verse 263 (padma.7.17.263)
Thus, best of brahmins, all the hosts of gods, Indra among them, constantly praise the auspicious land of Bharata.
Verse 264 (padma.7.17.264)
satyaṁ satyaṁ punarapi gadyate satyameva tat viśvātmānaṁ sakṛdapi mānavā ye'rcayaṁti ca
One who, having obtained birth there, still fails to worship Hari — no one his equal has ever been seen or heard of in this world.
Verse 265 (padma.7.17.265)
apyaśrāṁtaṁ dvija sudṛḍhayā karmabhūmau ca bhaktyā muktāḥ pāpaiḥ sukararacitairyāṁti kaivalyamāśu
True, true — again and again this alone is declared true: whatever men, in this land of action, worship the Soul of the universe even once, or, brahmin, with unwearied and firm devotion, are freed from sins however easily committed, and swiftly attain final liberation.
