The Glory of Ekadashi
Verse 1 (padma.7.22.1)
jaiminiruvāca- gaṅgāyāḥ śubha māhātmyaṁ viṣṇupūjāphalaṁ tathā annadānasya māhātmyaṁ jaladānasya cottamam
Jaimini said: The auspicious glory of the Ganga, the fruit of worshipping Vishnu, the glory of the gift of food, and the excellent gift of water —
Verse 2 (padma.7.22.2)
viprapādodakasyāpi māhātmyaṁ pāpanāśanam tvatprasādācchrutaṁ sarvaṁ setihāsaṁ guro mayā
— and the sin-destroying glory of a brahmin's foot-water too — Guru, by your grace I have now heard all of this, together with its story.
Verse 3 (padma.7.22.3)
idānīṁ muniśārdūla śrotumicchāmi sādaram ekādaśyāḥ phalaṁ sarvaṁ sarvapātakanāśanam
Tiger among sages, now I wish, with reverence, to hear all the fruit of the Ekadashi fast, which destroys every sin.
Verse 4 (padma.7.22.4)
kasmādekādaśī śreṣṭhā tasyāḥ ko vā vidhiḥ smṛtaḥ kadācit kriyate kiṁ vā phalaṁ tasyā vadasva me
Why is Ekadashi so excellent, what rite is prescribed for it, when is it observed, and what is its fruit — tell me this.
Verse 5 (padma.7.22.5)
kā vā pūjyatamā tatra devatā sadguṇārṇava akurvataḥ syātko doṣastanme vaktumihārhasi
O ocean of good qualities, who is the most worshipped deity in it? And what fault befalls one who fails to observe it — be pleased to tell me this too.
Verse 6 (padma.7.22.6)
vyāsa uvāca- ekādaśyāḥ phalaṁ sarvaṁ vaktuṁ nārāyaṇādṛte śaknoti nānyo viprarṣe tasmādvacmi samāsataḥ
Vyasa said: Sage among brahmins, apart from Narayana himself, no one is capable of telling the whole fruit of Ekadashi; therefore I shall tell it only in brief.
Verse 7 (padma.7.22.7)
sṛṣṭvādau puruṣaśreṣṭhaḥ saṁsāraṁ sacarācaram sarveṣāṁ damanārthāya sṛṣṭavānpāpapūruṣam
At the beginning of creation, that foremost of beings, having created the universe with all its moving and unmoving things, created, for the sake of restraining all beings, a being called the Man of Sin.
Verse 8 (padma.7.22.8)
dvijātihatyāmūrddhānaṁ madirāpānalocanam svarṇasteyaṁ ca vadanaṁ gurutalpagatiḥ śrutiḥ
The sin of killing a brahmin became his head, the sin of drinking wine his eyes, the sin of stealing gold his mouth, the sin of approaching one's teacher's wife his ears —
Verse 9 (padma.7.22.9)
strīhatyā nāsikaṁ caiva gohatyādoṣa bāhukam nyāsāpahāraṇa grīvaṁ bhrūṇahatyā galaṁ tathā
— the sin of killing a woman his nose, the sin of killing a cow his arms, the sin of misappropriating a trust his neck, and the sin of destroying an embryo his throat —
Verse 10 (padma.7.22.10)
parastrīgatabukkāgraṁ suhṛllokavadhodaram śaraṇāpannahatyādi nābhigartāvadhiṁ kaṭim
— the sin of going to another's wife the tip of his chest, the sin of killing friends his belly, the sin of killing one who has sought refuge his navel and waist —
Verse 11 (padma.7.22.11)
guruniṁdā sakthibhāgaṁ kanyāvikraya śephasam viśvāsavākyakathanaṁ pāyuṁ prītivadhāṁghrikam
— the sin of reviling one's teacher his thighs, the sin of selling a daughter his genitals, the sin of betraying a trusted word his anus, and the sin of killing a loved one his feet —
Verse 12 (padma.7.22.12)
upapātakaromāṇaṁ mahākāyaṁ bhayaṁkaram kṛṣṇavarṇaṁ piṁganetraṁ svāśrayātyaṁtaduḥkhadam
— and the lesser sins his very body-hair. He was of vast form, terrifying, black in hue, with tawny eyes, bringing extreme suffering to whoever gave him shelter.
Verse 13 (padma.7.22.13)
taṁ dṛṣṭvā pāpapuruṣamatyugraṁ puruṣottamam sadayaściṁtayāmāsa prajākleśaharaḥ prabhuḥ
Beholding that most terrible Man of Sin, the compassionate Lord Purushottama, remover of his people's afflictions, reflected within himself.
Verse 14 (padma.7.22.14)
sṛṣṭo'yaṁ durjanaḥ krūraḥ svāśrayakleśadāyakaḥ prajānāṁ damanārthāya sṛjāmyetasya kāraṇam
"This wicked, cruel being, bringing affliction upon whoever gives it shelter, has been created for the restraint of my people; now I shall create the very means of countering it."
Verse 15 (padma.7.22.15)
athāsau bhagavānviṣṇurbabhūva svayamaṁtakaḥ sasarja rauravādīṁśca nirayānpāpiduḥkhadān
Then the Blessed Lord Vishnu himself became Death, and created the hells beginning with Raurava, bringing suffering to sinners.
Verse 16 (padma.7.22.16)
pāpaṁ yaḥ sevate mūḍho na yāti paramaṁ padam yamājñayā vrajettatra narakaṁ rauravādikam
Whatever fool commits sin does not attain the supreme state; by Yama's command he goes there to the hells, beginning with Raurava.
Verse 17 (padma.7.22.17)
ekadā bhagavānviṣṇuḥ prajānāṁ duḥkhanāśanaḥ vainateyaṁ samāruhya jagāma yamamaṁdiram
Once the Blessed Lord Vishnu, destroyer of his people's sorrows, mounted upon Garuda, went to the abode of Yama.
Verse 18 (padma.7.22.18)
taṁ dṛṣṭvā jagatāmīśaṁ nārāyaṇamanāmayam dhūpādyaiḥ pūjayāmāsa bhāskaristuṣṭamānasaḥ
Beholding him, Lord of the universe, the unblemished Narayana, the son of the Sun, his mind delighted, worshipped him with incense and the like.
Verse 19 (padma.7.22.19)
yamenābhyarcito viṣṇuḥ sarvalokaikanāyakaḥ uvāsa dvijaśārdūla pīṭhe kanakanirmite
Tiger among brahmins, worshipped by Yama, Vishnu, sole lord of every world, took his seat upon a throne made of gold.
Verse 20 (padma.7.22.20)
tatropaviṣṭo bhagavānyamena saha daityahā śuśrāva kraṁdanaṁ dhyānaṁ dakṣiṇasyāṁ diśi prabho
The Lord, slayer of demons, seated there together with Yama, heard the sound of wailing coming from the southern direction, and fell to reflecting.
Verse 21 (padma.7.22.21)
athāsau kamalākāṁto vismayāviṣṭamānasaḥ uvāceti yamaṁ teṣāṁ kuto'yaṁ kraṁdanadhvaniḥ
Then Kamalakanta, his mind filled with wonder, asked Yama from where this sound of wailing was coming.
Verse 22 (padma.7.22.22)
yama uvāca- devapātakino martyā niraye'tyaṁtaduḥkhade svahastārjitadoṣeṇa sīdaṁti ca mamālaye
Yama said: My Lord, by the fault of their own actions, sinful mortals suffer in the most tormenting hell of my abode.
Verse 23 (padma.7.22.23)
pāpavṛkṣaphalaṁ viṣṇo bhoktumatyaṁtaduḥkhadam rudaṁti pāpinastasmātteṣāṁ dhvanirasau mahān
O Vishnu, forced to eat the most tormenting fruit of the tree of sin, those sinners cry out; that is why this great sound arises from them.
Verse 24 (padma.7.22.24)
ityuktaḥ sūryaputreṇa kṛṣṇaḥ kamalalocanaḥ jagāma sahasā tatra pāpavaṁto rudaṁti te
Thus told by the son of the Sun, lotus-eyed Krishna went at once to that place where those sinful people were weeping.
Verse 25 (padma.7.22.25)
tāndṛṣṭvā pāpino martyānrauravādiṣu saṁsthitān bhagavāṁściṁtayāmāsa hṛdijātadayaḥ prabhuḥ
Beholding those sinful mortals lodged in Raurava and the other hells, compassion arose in the heart of the Blessed Lord, and he reflected.
Verse 26 (padma.7.22.26)
mayā sṛṣṭāḥ prajāḥ sarvā doṣeṇa nijakarmaṇām mayi sthite'pi narake sīdaṁtyekāṁtaduḥkhade
"These very people, created by me, through the fault of their own deeds, suffer in this hell of unrelenting sorrow, even while I myself remain present."
Verse 27 (padma.7.22.27)
etaccānyacca viprendra viciṁtya karuṇāmayaḥ babhūva sahasā tatra svayamekādaśī tithiḥ
Foremost of brahmins, reflecting on this and much else, from that compassionate Lord there suddenly arose, of its own accord, the very tithi of Ekadashi.
Verse 28 (padma.7.22.28)
tatastānpāpinaḥ sarvānkārayāmāsa tacchrutam te ca sarve paraṁ dhāma yayurgalitakalmaṣāḥ
Then she caused all those sinners to hear of, and observe, that fast; and all of them, their taints now gone, went to the supreme abode.
Verse 29 (padma.7.22.29)
tasmādekādaśīṁ viṣṇomūrtiṁ viddhi parātmanaḥ samastaduṣkṛtiśreṣṭhaṁ vratānāṁ vratamuttamam
Therefore know Ekadashi to be a very form of the Supreme Self, Vishnu — the finest at destroying every misdeed, the most excellent of all vows.
Verse 30 (padma.7.22.30)
ekādaśīṁ tithiṁ kṛtvā pāvayaṁtīṁ jagattrayam śaṁkitaḥ pāpapuruṣo viṣṇuṁ stotumupāyayau
Seeing the Ekadashi tithi arise, purifying all three worlds, the fearful Man of Sin approached to praise Vishnu.
Verse 31 (padma.7.22.31)
Brahmin, then that Man of Sin, joining his palms with devotion, began to praise the Blessed Lord Janardana, Consort of Lakshmi.
Verse 32 (padma.7.22.32)
tasyastavaṁ samākarṇya prasannaḥ parameśvaraḥ uvācāhaṁ prasanno'smi kiṁte'bhimatamucyatām
Hearing his praise, the Supreme Lord, pleased, said: "I am pleased — tell me what you desire."
Verse 33 (padma.7.22.33)
pāpapuruṣa uvāca- sṛṣṭo bhagavatā viṣṇo nijānugrahaduḥkhadaḥ ekadaśyāḥ prabhāveṇa kṣayaṁ prāpnomi sāṁpratam
The Man of Sin said: O Vishnu, created by the Blessed Lord himself, bringing suffering yet serving his own grace, I am now being destroyed by the power of Ekadashi.
Verse 34 (padma.7.22.34)
mṛte mayi jagatyasminsarve te ca śarīriṇaḥ bhaviṣyaṁti vinirmuktā bhavabaṁdhaiḥ śarīriṇaḥ
Once I am dead, every embodied being in this world will become free of the bonds of worldly existence.
Verse 35 (padma.7.22.35)
sarveṣu ca vimukteṣu dehiśreṣṭheṣu pūruṣam saṁsārakautukāgāre kaistvaṁ krīḍiṣyase prabho
And once every excellent embodied being is thus set free, Lord, with whom will you then sport in this playhouse of worldly existence?
Verse 36 (padma.7.22.36)
krīḍituṁ yadi te vāṁchā jagatkautukamaṁdire ekādaśī tithi bhayāttadā māṁ trāhi keśava
If you still wish to sport in this playhouse of the world, then, Keshava, save me from the fear of the Ekadashi tithi.
Verse 37 (padma.7.22.37)
anyaiḥ puṇyasahasraistu māṁ haṁtuṁ na hi śakyate śaknotyekādaśī puṇyā māṁ haṁtuṁ varado bhava
By thousands of other merits I cannot be destroyed; only the meritorious Ekadashi has the power to destroy me — be pleased to grant me a boon.
Verse 38 (padma.7.22.38)
manuṣyapaśukīṭeṣu tathā'nyeṣu ca jaṁtuṣu parvateṣu ca vṛkṣeṣu sthāneṣu ca jaleṣu ca
Among humans, animals, insects, and other creatures, upon mountains and among trees, in places and in waters —
Verse 39 (padma.7.22.39)
nadīṣu ca samudreṣu vaneṣu prāṁtareṣu ca svarge martye ca pātāle devagaṁdharvapakṣiṣu
— in rivers and oceans, in forests and open plains, in heaven, on earth, and in the netherworld, among gods, gandharvas, and birds —
Verse 40 (padma.7.22.40)
ekādaśītithi bhayādbhūyānviṣṇo palāyitaḥ kutrāpi nirbhayasthānaṁ na ca tena ca kutracit
— O Vishnu, though I fled everywhere out of fear of the Ekadashi tithi, nowhere at all did I find any place free from fear.
Verse 41 (padma.7.22.41)
koṭibrahmāṇḍamadhyeṣu devadeva sanātana ekādaśyāṁ tithau sthātuṁ mayā sthānaṁ na labhyate
O God of gods, eternal one, within millions of universes I cannot find any place at all to dwell on the Ekadashi day.
Verse 42 (padma.7.22.42)
ekādaśyāmahaṁ kutra vatsyāmi nirbhayaḥ prabho tanme kathaya deveśa tvayāsṛṣṭo'smyahetukaḥ
My Lord, where shall I dwell, free from fear, on the Ekadashi day? Tell me this, Lord of gods — I was created by you yourself, without any fault of my own.
Verse 43 (padma.7.22.43)
vyāsa uvāca- ityuktvā pāpapuruṣaḥ kleśanāśanamacyutam bhūmau nipatya cakraṁda sravadvāṣpavilocanaḥ
Vyasa said: Having spoken thus to the affliction-destroying, imperishable Lord, the Man of Sin fell to the ground, weeping, tears streaming from his eyes.
Verse 44 (padma.7.22.44)
tataḥ prahasya bhagavānmadhukaiṭabhamardanaḥ ekādaśī bhayāttrastamuvāca pāpapūruṣam
Then the Blessed Lord, crusher of Madhu and Kaitabha, smiled, and spoke thus to that Man of Sin, terrified of Ekadashi.
Verse 45 (padma.7.22.45)
śrībhagavānuvāca- uttiṣṭha pāpapuruṣa tyaja śokaṁ mudaṁ kuru ekādaśyāṁ tithau yatra tava sthānaṁ vadāmi te
The Blessed Lord said: Rise, Man of Sin, give up your grief, be glad. I shall now tell you where your place shall be on the Ekadashi day.
Verse 46 (padma.7.22.46)
ekādaśyāṁ samāyāṁtyāṁ prapunantyāṁ jagattrayam sthātavyamannamāśritya bhavatā pāpapūruṣaḥ
When Ekadashi arrives, purifying all three worlds, then, Man of Sin, you must take refuge in food, and dwell there.
Verse 47 (padma.7.22.47)
annamāśritya tiṣṭhaṁtaṁ bhavaṁtaṁ pāpapūruṣam na haniṣyati manmūrtiriyamekādaśī tithiḥ
You, Man of Sin, dwelling sheltered within food, this Ekadashi tithi, which is my own embodied form, will not destroy.
Verse 48 (padma.7.22.48)
Sage among brahmins, then the god too vanished from that place, and the Man of Sin, his purpose fulfilled, departed just as he had come.
Verse 49 (padma.7.22.49)
tasmādannaṁ na bhoktavyaṁ kadācidapi sattamaiḥ ātmano hitamicchadbhiḥ saṁprāpte harivāsare
Therefore the virtuous, who desire their own welfare, should never eat food when the day of Hari has arrived.
Verse 50 (padma.7.22.50)
saṁsāre yāni pāpāni tānyevaikādaśīdine annamāśritya tiṣṭhaṁti śrīmannārāyaṇājñayā
Whatever sins exist in this world, all of them, by the command of the glorious Narayana, take refuge in food and dwell there on the day of Ekadashi.
Verse 51 (padma.7.22.51)
kurvatāṁ sarvapāpāni narakānniṣkṛtirbhavet yecānnaṁ bhuñjate'trāpi te jñeyāḥ pāpināṁ varāḥ
Even those who commit every kind of sin may yet find release from hell; but whoever eats food even on this day should be known as foremost among sinners.
Verse 52 (padma.7.22.52)
bhūyobhūyo dṛḍhaṁ vacmi śrūyatāṁ śrūyatāṁ janāḥ na bhoktavyaṁ na bhoktavyaṁ na bhoktavyaṁ kadācana
Again and again I declare it firmly — listen, people, listen: one must not eat, must not eat, must never, ever eat on this day.
Verse 53 (padma.7.22.53)
brahmakṣatriyaviṭśūdrairanyaiśca dvijasattama sarvairekādaśī kāryā caturvargaphalapradā
Best of brahmins, brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas, shudras, and all others alike should observe Ekadashi, which bestows the four goals of life.
Verse 54 (padma.7.22.54)
aṣṭādaśanimeṣāstu kāṣṭhā proktā manīṣibhiḥ kṣaṇaṁ triṁśatkalābhiḥ syānmuhūrto dvādaśakṣaṇaiḥ triṁśanmuhūrtā lokānāmahorātraḥ prakīrtitaḥ
Eighteen blinks of an eye are called, by the wise, one kashtha; thirty kalas make one kshana, twelve kshanas one muhurta; thirty muhurtas are declared to make one full day-and-night for the world.
Verse 55 (padma.7.22.55)
taiḥ paṁñcadaśabhiḥ pakṣo vijñeyo dvijasattama pakṣābhyāṁ śuklakṛṣṇābhyāṁ māsastu parikalpitaḥ
Best of brahmins, fifteen such days-and-nights should be known as one paksha; from the bright and dark fortnights together is composed one month.
Verse 56 (padma.7.22.56)
tasminmāse dvijaśreṣṭha pakṣayoḥ śukla kṛṣṇayoḥ mahāpātakayukto'pi karotyekādaśīṁ yadi
Best of brahmins, within that month, in both the bright and dark fortnights, if even a person burdened with great sins observes Ekadashi —
Verse 57 (padma.7.22.57)
sarvapāpavinirmukto viṣṇulokamavāpnuyāt mātā na procyate mātā mātā hyekādaśī tithiḥ
— he becomes free of every sin and attains Vishnu's own world. An ordinary mother is not even truly called a mother; the true mother is Ekadashi herself.
Verse 58 (padma.7.22.58)
ihaiva pālayenmātā sarvatraikādaśī tithiḥ ekādaśīvrataṁ tyaktvā vratamanyatkaroti yaḥ
An ordinary mother nurtures only in this world, but the Ekadashi tithi nurtures everywhere. Whoever, abandoning the Ekadashi fast, observes some other vow instead —
Verse 59 (padma.7.22.59)
svakarasthaṁ maṇiṁ tyaktvā loṣṭhaṁ gṛhṇāti mūḍhadhīḥ ekādaśīvrataṁ yaistu kṛtaṁ bhaktisamanvitaiḥ
— that dull-witted man discards the jewel already in his own hand and takes up a mere clod of earth instead. Whoever, endowed with devotion, has observed the Ekadashi fast —
Verse 60 (padma.7.22.60)
taistu yajñā kṛtāḥ sarve vratāni sakalāni ca ekādaśyāṁ ca bhuñjanti ye mohātpāpino narāḥ
— by him every sacrifice and every vow alike is deemed to have been performed. Whatever sinful men, out of delusion, eat food on the Ekadashi day —
Verse 61 (padma.7.22.61)
śuklāyāṁ vāpi kṛṣṇāyāṁ teṣāṁ ruṣṭaḥ sadā hariḥ tena dharmāḥ kṛtāḥ sarve laṅghitā yena sā tithiḥ
— whether in the bright or the dark fortnight, with them Hari remains ever displeased. Whoever violates that tithi should be understood to have violated every dharma as well.
Verse 62 (padma.7.22.62)
yathā samastadevānāṁ śreṣṭho viṣṇuḥ prakīrtitaḥ tathā sarvavratānāṁ ca śreṣṭhamekādaśī vratam
Just as Vishnu is proclaimed the foremost among all the gods, so too the Ekadashi fast is the foremost among all vows.
Verse 63 (padma.7.22.63)
ādityānāṁ yathā sūryo nakṣatrāṇāṁ yathā śaśī tathā sarvavrataśreṣṭhaṁ proktamekādaśīvratam
As the sun is foremost among the solar deities, and the moon foremost among the stars, so too is the Ekadashi fast declared foremost among all vows.
Verse 64 (padma.7.22.64)
vṛkṣāṇāṁ ca yathāśvattho vedānāṁ sāma kīrtitam tathā sarvavrataśreṣṭhaṁ proktamekādaśīvratam
As the ashvattha is foremost among trees, and the Samaveda proclaimed foremost among the Vedas, so too is the Ekadashi fast declared foremost among all vows.
Verse 65 (padma.7.22.65)
kavīnāmuśanā śreṣṭho varṇānāṁ brāhmaṇo yathā tathā sarvavrataśreṣṭhaṁ proktamekādaśīvratam
As Ushanas is foremost among sages, and the brahmin foremost among the castes, so too is the Ekadashi fast declared foremost among all vows.
Verse 66 (padma.7.22.66)
vyāsaḥ śreṣṭho munīnāṁ ca devarṣīṇāṁ ca nāradaḥ tathā vratānāṁ sarveṣāṁ śreṣṭhamekādaśīvratam
As Vyasa is foremost among sages, and Narada foremost among the divine seers, so too is the Ekadashi fast foremost among all vows.
Verse 67 (padma.7.22.67)
yathā samastadānānāmannadānaṁ varaṁ smṛtam tathā sarvavrataśreṣṭhaṁ proktamekādaśīvratam
As the gift of food is held to be the finest of all gifts, so too the Ekadashi fast is declared the finest of all vows.
Verse 68 (padma.7.22.68)
yathā puṇyasamaṁ mitraṁ nāsti śāstrasamo guruḥ tathaivaikādaśī tulyaṁ vrataṁ nāsti jagattraye
As there is no friend equal to merit, no teacher equal to scripture, so too, in all three worlds, there is no vow equal to Ekadashi.
Verse 69 (padma.7.22.69)
indriyāṇāṁ yathā śreṣṭhaṁ manaḥ proktaṁ manīṣibhiḥ māsānāṁ kārtikaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ yathārjunaḥ
As the mind is declared by the wise to be foremost among the senses, as Kartika is foremost among the months, as Arjuna is foremost among the Pandavas —
Verse 70 (padma.7.22.70)
yathā samastaśāstrāṇāṁ śreṣṭhā vedāḥ prakīrtitāḥ tathā vratānāṁ pravaraṁ smṛtamekādaśīvratam
— as the Vedas are proclaimed foremost among all scriptures, so too the Ekadashi fast is held to be foremost among vows.
Verse 71 (padma.7.22.71)
vedāgamapurāṇeṣu śāstreṣvanyeṣu ca dvija kutrāpyekādaśītulyaṁ vrataṁ proktaṁ na kovidaiḥ
Brahmin, nowhere in the Vedas, the Agamas, the Puranas, or any other scripture have the learned ever declared any vow equal to Ekadashi.
Verse 72 (padma.7.22.72)
nirbhayā mānavāḥ sarve tiṣṭhaṁti kṣitimaṇḍale ekādaśīvrataṁ kṛtvā kiṁ kariṣyati bhāskariḥ
Having observed the Ekadashi fast, all people upon this earth dwell without fear; what indeed can the son of the Sun do to them?
Verse 73 (padma.7.22.73)
ekāmekādaśīṁ samyakkurvatāṁ kiṁkaro yamaḥ ekādaśīvrataṁ tasmātkartavyaṁ hi śubhapradam
For those who properly observe even a single Ekadashi, Yama himself becomes like a mere servant; therefore this auspicious Ekadashi fast should surely be observed.
Verse 74 (padma.7.22.74)
ekādaśīvratavidhiṁ saṁkṣepātkathayāmyaham samāhitamanā bhūtvā śṛṇu sattama jaimine
Now I shall tell in brief the rite of the Ekadashi fast; excellent Jaimini, listen with a focused mind.
Verse 75 (padma.7.22.75)
daśamyāṁ prātarutthāya kartavyaṁ daṁtadhāvanam tatastailādṛte snānaṁ kartavyamannavarjanaiḥ
On the tenth day, one should rise at dawn and clean the teeth; then bathe without using oil, and, abstaining from grain —
Verse 76 (padma.7.22.76)
tato viṣṇuṁ samabhyarcya pādyādyairjagadīśvaram haridhyānaparo bhūtvā ekabhojanamācaret
— then, worshipping the Lord of the universe, Vishnu, with foot-water and the like, and remaining absorbed in meditation on Hari, one should eat only a single meal.
Verse 77 (padma.7.22.77)

atyantabhojanaṁ caiva atyantāśanabhojanam tāṁbūlabhakṣaṇaṁ caiva daśamyāṁ parivarjayet
Excessive eating, eating too many times, and chewing betel-leaf — all of these should be avoided on the tenth day.
Verse 81 (padma.7.22.81)
daśamyāṁ yāni vastūni niṣiddhāni dvijottama dvādaśyāmapi tānyeva niṣiddhāni na saṁśayaḥ
Best of brahmins, whatever things are forbidden on the tenth day are equally forbidden on the twelfth as well — of this there is no doubt.
Verse 82 (padma.7.22.82)
daśamyāṁ vipraśārdūla dvādaśyāmapi vaiṣṇavaḥ samyagvrataphalaprepsurna kuryānniśi bhojanam
Tiger among brahmins, on both the tenth and twelfth days, a Vaishnava who fully desires the fruit of the vow should not eat at night at all.
Verse 83 (padma.7.22.83)
ato haviṣyaṁ kṛtvā tu daśamyāṁ satvaro vratī aparāhṇe punaḥ kuryādvidhinā daṁtadhāvanam
Therefore, having taken a sanctified meal on the tenth day, the observant fast-keeper should, in the afternoon, again duly clean his teeth.
Verse 84 (padma.7.22.84)

tasminneva gṛhe viṣṇorviṣṇusmaraṇatatparaḥ kuśena śayyāmāstīrya bhūmau śayanamācaret
In that very temple of Vishnu, absorbed in remembrance of Vishnu, one should spread a bed of kusha grass and lie down upon the ground.
Verse 89 (padma.7.22.89)

tathā saputramitraśca kurute jāgaraṁ hareḥ sa tiṣṭhedviṣṇubhavane ciraṁ vratakaro dvija

dadāmyahaṁ pavitrārthaṁ jagatāmādikārakam idamācamanaṁ deva tadgṛhāṇa sureśvara
O god, O Lord of gods, for the sake of purity I give you this sipping-water, the very origin of all the worlds; accept it.
Verse 118 (padma.7.22.118)
sṛṣṭo'yaṁ vidhinā pūrvaṁ devānāṁ tuṣṭivṛddhaye atastubhyaṁ suraśreṣṭha dhūpo'yaṁ dīyate mayā
This incense was created long ago by Brahma for increasing the delight of the gods; therefore, best of gods, I offer this incense to you.
Verse 119 (padma.7.22.119)
tamasaḥ stomasaṁhartā ghṛtapūrṇo janārdana tavāstu prītaye deva eṣa dīpo janārdana
O Janardana, destroying the mass of darkness, this lamp filled with ghee — may it be for your delight, O god Janardana.
Verse 120 (padma.7.22.120)
sottarīyamidaṁ vastraṁ bastiśroṇisuśobhanam dadāmyahaṁ te deveśa sopavītaṁ jagadguro
O Lord of gods, O Teacher of the world, this garment together with its upper cloth, adorning the waist, and this sacred thread — I offer all of this to you.
Verse 121 (padma.7.22.121)
annaṁ caturvidhaṁ svādurasaiḥ ṣaḍbhiḥ samanvitam mayā niveditaṁ bhaktyā gṛhāṇa parameśvara
Supreme Lord, I have devotedly offered you food of four kinds, endowed with all six sweet flavors; accept it.
Verse 122 (padma.7.22.122)
mukhadurgandhaharaṇaṁ karpūrakhadirānvitam gṛhāṇa viṣṇo tāṁbūlaṁ kaivalyada mahāmate
O Vishnu, O most wise giver of liberation, accept this betel-leaf, removing the mouth's bad odor, mixed with camphor and catechu.
Verse 123 (padma.7.22.123)
vidhinānena govindamupahārairanuttamaiḥ pūjayetsaṁvṛto bhaktyā prahareṣu caturṣvapi
In this manner, with these excellent offerings, one should worship Govinda with devotion and concentration, in all four watches of the day.
Verse 124 (padma.7.22.124)
nānopahārānharaye yo yaccheddharivāsare vittaśāṭhyaṁ na kartavyaṁ karmaṇāṁ phalamicchatā
Whoever offers Hari various kinds of gifts on the day of Hari — one who desires the fruit of these acts should not be stingy with wealth.
Verse 125 (padma.7.22.125)
tatastu vratibhiḥ sarvairnārāyaṇaparāyaṇaiḥ niśi jāgaraṇaṁ kāryyaṁ nṛtyagītastavādibhiḥ
Then all the fast-keepers, devoted to Narayana, should keep a night vigil with dance, song, hymns of praise, and the like.
Verse 126 (padma.7.22.126)
pradakṣiṇaṁ dvijaśreṣṭha nāmāni kamalāpateḥ sarvapāpavināśīni smartavyāni vrate rataiḥ
Best of brahmins, while circumambulating, those devoted to the fast should recall the names of the Consort of Lakshmi, which destroy every sin.
Verse 127 (padma.7.22.127)
sphuraṁtaṁ prativaktrebhyo harināmadhvaniṁ janāḥ śṛṇvaṁti te vimuktāḥ syurmahadbhiḥ pāpasaṁcayaiḥ
Whatever people hear the sound of Hari's name resounding from every mouth, they become freed even from great accumulated sins.
Verse 128 (padma.7.22.128)
na pākhaṁṇḍajanālāpaḥ kartavyo harivāsare pākhaṁḍālāpamātreṇa sarvadharmo vinaśyati
On the day of Hari one should not converse with hypocrites; merely conversing with a hypocrite destroys the whole of one's dharma.
Verse 129 (padma.7.22.129)
nārāyaṇayaśogītaṁ pratikaṁṭhaṁ viniḥsṛtam śrutvā mūḍhā na tṛpyaṁti śvāno vīṇākvaṇaṁ yathā
Even hearing the song of Narayana's glory, resounding from every throat, fools take no satisfaction from it — just as dogs take no pleasure in the sound of a lute.
Verse 130 (padma.7.22.130)
saṁto harṣaṁ samāyāṁti śrutvā gītaṁ jagatpateḥ samastapāpavidhvaṁsi vīṇākvāṇaṁ yathā mṛgāḥ
But the virtuous take delight upon hearing the Lord of the world's song, destroying every sin — just as deer take delight upon hearing the sound of a lute.
Verse 131 (padma.7.22.131)
gāyaṁtaṁ harigītāni nṛtyaṁti nṛtyamuttamam tṛpyaṁti vratino dṛṣṭvā tṛpyaṁti kamalāpateḥ
Singing the songs of Hari, people dance excellent dances; seeing them, the fast-keepers are satisfied, and the Consort of Lakshmi too is satisfied.
Verse 132 (padma.7.22.132)
vratino yena tṛpyaṁti viṣṇorāyatane dvija pratijanmani vai teṣāṁ paśutā śāśvatī bhavet
Brahmin, whoever thus brings satisfaction to the fast-keepers in Vishnu's temple, for them, birth after birth, a brutish existence never, ever befalls.
Verse 133 (padma.7.22.133)
na ye gītāni gāyaṁti vratino harivāsare vihīnā vacanaiste ca bhramaṁti pratijanmani
Whatever fast-keepers do not sing songs on the day of Hari, deprived of speech, they wander birth after birth.
Verse 134 (padma.7.22.134)
mṛdaṁgādīni vādyāni kartavyāni hareḥ puraḥ yato vādyairbhavettuṣṭo bhagavānmadhusūdanaḥ
One should play drums and other instruments before Hari, for by such music the Blessed Lord Madhusudana becomes pleased.
Verse 135 (padma.7.22.135)
kurvaṁti jāgaraṁ viṣṇorvedādhyayanamuttamam purāṇapaṭhanaṁ vāpi kartavyaṁ vaiṣṇavairjanaiḥ
During the vigil for Vishnu, Vaishnava people should also engage in the excellent study of the Vedas, or the recitation of the Puranas.
Verse 136 (padma.7.22.136)
rāmāyaṇaṁ bhāgavataṁ bhārataṁ vyāsabhāṣitam anyāni ca purāṇāni pāṭhyāni harivāsare
The Ramayana, the Bhagavata, the Mahabharata spoken by Vyasa, and other Puranas — these should be read on the day of Hari.
Verse 137 (padma.7.22.137)
ye paṭhaṁti puro viṣṇorye śṛṇvanti harerdine pratyakṣare labhaṁte te kapilādānajaṁ phalam
Whoever reads or listens to these before Vishnu on the day of Hari obtains, for every single letter, a fruit equal to the gift of a tawny cow.
Verse 138 (padma.7.22.138)
niśi jāgaraṇaṁ kuryātsānaṁdo vaiṣṇavo janaḥ jitanidro bhavetsamyagdhyāyate keśavaṁ hṛdā
Vaishnavas should joyfully keep the night vigil; having fully conquered sleep, they should meditate on Keshava in the heart.
Verse 139 (padma.7.22.139)
pradakṣiṇākāratayā bhūyobhūyo harerddine nipatya daṇḍavadbhūmau praṇamecca janārddanam
On the day of Hari, circumambulating again and again, one should fall prostrate upon the ground and bow to Janardana.
Verse 140 (padma.7.22.140)
tataḥ prabhāte vimale kṛtapaṁcamahādhvaraḥ hariṁ saṁsnāpya dugdhena pūjayedbhaktimānvratī
Then, at clear dawn, having performed the five great daily sacrifices, the devoted fast-keeper should bathe Hari with milk and worship him.
Verse 141 (padma.7.22.141)
vratasya dakṣiṇāṁ dadyānnijaśaktyā dvijanmane tatastu dvādaśīmadhye vratī pāraṇamācaret
Then, according to one's own means, the fee for the vow should be given to a brahmin; then, within the twelfth day itself, the fast-keeper should break the fast.
Verse 142 (padma.7.22.142)
pāraṇaṁ kurute yastu vilaṁghya dvādaśītithim janmakoṭyarjitaṁ puṇyaṁ tasya caiva vinaśyati
Whoever breaks the fast after the twelfth tithi has passed, his merit accumulated across millions of births is destroyed as well.
Verse 143 (padma.7.22.143)
dvādaśītithimadhye tu kartavyaṁ pāraṇaṁ budhaiḥ na kadācittrayodaśyāṁ vratasya phalamicchubhiḥ
The wise, who desire the fruit of the fast, should break it only within the twelfth tithi, never on the thirteenth.
Verse 144 (padma.7.22.144)
upavāsadine vipra niśāyāmapi vaiṣṇavaḥ upavāsaphalaprepsuryatnātsvāpaṁ vivarjayet
Brahmin, on the fasting day, even at night, a Vaishnava who desires the fruit of the fast should carefully avoid sleep.
Verse 145 (padma.7.22.145)
vinā jāgaraṇaṁ nūnamupavāso nirarthakaḥ ato jāgaraṇaṁ kāryyamubhayorapi pakṣayoḥ
Without the night vigil, the fast is indeed pointless; therefore the vigil must be kept in both fortnights.
Verse 146 (padma.7.22.146)
ekādaśīvrataṁ yena vidhinānena kurvate satyaṁ satyaṁ dvijaśreṣṭha sarve te mokṣagāminaḥ
Whoever observes the Ekadashi fast by this very rite, best of brahmins — truly, truly, all of them are bound for liberation.
Verse 147 (padma.7.22.147)
janmamṛtyuharaṇaikanidānaṁ seṁdra devanikarairapi kāryam vāsudevadivasavratasāraṁ jaimine tvamaniśaṁ kuru yatnāt
The sole means of removing birth and death, worthy of practice even by the hosts of gods, Indra included — this essence of the Vasudeva-day fast, O Jaimini, practice constantly and with diligence.
