I say this to you, for I have never seen so excellent a Vaishnava as you; O king, by you this earth has become blessed, of this there is no doubt.

Verse 19 (padma.7.23.19)

saptadvīpaikanāthaśca sadārastvaṁ nṛpottama nārāyaṇāgrataḥ prītyā yato nṛtyasi gāyasi

Best of kings, sole lord of the seven continents, yet you and your queen alike dance and sing before Narayana with such love.

Verse 21 (padma.7.23.21)

caritraṁ yuvayoretaddaṁpatyordṛṣṭamadbhutam kasmādbuddhiriyaṁ jātā yuvayoratinirmalā

Seeing this conduct of you both, husband and wife, seems wondrous to me — from where has this exceedingly pure understanding arisen in you both?

Verse 22 (padma.7.23.22)

vyāsa uvāca- tasyedaṁ vākyamākarṇya śaurināmno dvijanmanaḥ īṣaddhāsyamukhīprāha suprājñā tamatho dvijam

Vyasa said: Hearing these words of that brahmin named Shauri, Suprajna, her face slightly smiling, spoke thus to that brahmin.

Verse 23 (padma.7.23.23)

suprājñovāca- ekādaśīprabhāvena pūrvamāvāṁ dvijottama atipātakinau muktau sūryajena mahātmanā

Suprajna said: Best of brahmins, in a former time we two were exceedingly sinful, yet, by the power of Ekadashi, we were released by the great-souled son of the Sun.

Verse 24 (padma.7.23.24)

jātismṛtiprabhāveṇa divyamekādaśīvratam kurvaḥ saṁprati viprendra paramasthānakāṅkṣayā

By the power of remembering our former birth, foremost of brahmins, we now observe this divine Ekadashi fast, longing for the supreme abode.

Verse 25 (padma.7.23.25)

śauriruvāca- yadi nūnaṁ varārohe pūrvāṁ jātiṁ tvamātmanaḥ vetsi me brūhi tāṁ śrotuṁ jāyate kautukaṁ hṛdi

Shauri said: O lovely one, if you truly know your own former birth, tell it to me — a great curiosity has arisen in my heart to hear it.

Verse 26 (padma.7.23.26)

pūrvaṁ sthitā kā bhavatī patirvā kaḥ sthitastava kathaṁ bhāskariṇā tyaktau yuvāṁ pātakināvapi

Who were you in a former time, and who was your husband then? How, though sinners, did the son of the Sun release you both?

Verse 27 (padma.7.23.27)

suprājñovāca- aprakāśyamidaṁ vākyaṁ yadyapi dvijasattama sthitāsmi vāramukhyā'haṁ ratiśāstraviśāradā

Suprajna said: Best of brahmins, although this matter is not fit to be revealed, still I shall tell it — I was a leading courtesan, skilled in the art of love.

Verse 28 (padma.7.23.28)

tasmiñjanmani pāpāni ghorāṇi subahūni ca mayā kṛtāni viprendra narakakleśadāni vai

In that birth, foremost of brahmins, I committed many terrible sins, sins that bring the torment of hell.

Verse 29 (padma.7.23.29)

ayaṁ nityodayo nāma śūdra svāḥcāravarjitaḥ paradāraharaḥ krūraḥ paradravyāpahārakaḥ

This man, my present husband, then, was a shudra named Nityodaya, devoid of even his own proper conduct, an abductor of others' wives, cruel, a seizer of others' wealth.

Verse 30 (padma.7.23.30)

surāpo mitrahaṁtā ca bhrūṇahā parahiṁsakaḥ atyahaṁkārayuktaśca dharmaniṁdākaraḥ sadā

He was a drinker of wine, a killer of friends, a destroyer of embryos, one who harmed others, exceedingly proud, and ever a reviler of dharma.

Verse 31 (padma.7.23.31)

ekadā jñātibhiḥ sarvaiḥ parityakto hi sadvrataiḥ ājagāma mamāgāraṁ veśyāvibhramalolupaḥ

Once, abandoned by all his virtuous kinsmen, greedy for the charms of a courtesan, he came to my house.

Verse 32 (padma.7.23.32)

yuvānaṁ suṁdaraṁ dṛṣṭvā tamenaṁ dvijasattama mayāpi prītimāsādya saṁtuṣṭaḥ suratairapi

Best of brahmins, seeing that handsome young man, affection arose in me as well, and he too found satisfaction in our union.

Verse 33 (padma.7.23.33)

tato'nubhūya surataṁ mayā saha tapodhana ayamāha ca māṁ premṇā vinayāvanato vacaḥ

O ascetic, then, having experienced union with me, he humbly bowed and spoke these words to me with love.

Verse 34 (padma.7.23.34)

ahaṁ surataśāstrajñaḥ parityaktaḥ svabaṁdhubhiḥ yadi tvaṁ manyase tasmiṁstiṣṭhāmyatra tvayā saha

"I am skilled in the art of love, and have been abandoned by my own kinsmen; if you approve, let me remain here with you."

Verse 35 (padma.7.23.35)

vinayāvanataṁ vākyamidaṁ śuśrāva taddivaja daṁpatībhāvamāsādya sahānena sthitāsmyaham

Brahmin, hearing this humble request of his, I began to live with him as his wife.

Verse 36 (padma.7.23.36)

kadāciddivajaśārdūla ekādaśyāṁ tithau hareḥ mahadbhiḥ pīḍitāhaṁ ca dehadehāvaghātakaiḥ

Tiger among brahmins, once, on the Ekadashi day of Hari, I was afflicted by great ailments, harmful to the body.

Verse 37 (padma.7.23.37)

tasminneva dvijaśreṣṭha jvarajarjaradehayā na pītamudakaṁ nānnaṁ bhuktaṁ ca parayā bhiyā

Best of brahmins, my body weak with fever, on that very day, out of great fear, I neither drank water nor ate food.

Verse 38 (padma.7.23.38)

mamasnehodayo'yaṁ ca tasminneva dine hareḥ tatyājānnaṁ ca toyaṁ ca viṣaṇṇa iva janmanā

And this Nityodaya, out of affection for me, on that very day of Hari, as if grieving from birth itself, also gave up both food and water.

Verse 39 (padma.7.23.39)

atha rātrau dvijaśreṣṭha dīpaṁ prajvālya sarpiṣā mayā kṛtaṁ jāgaraṇaṁ jvarāpahatacetasā

Best of brahmins, then at night, lighting a lamp of ghee, I, my mind disturbed by fever, also kept a vigil.

Verse 40 (padma.7.23.40)

nārāyaṇa harekṛṣṇa rakṣa māmiti jalpatā muhurmuhuranenāpi kṛtaṁ jāgaraṇaṁ niśi

"O Narayana, O Hari, O Krishna, protect me!" — thus repeating again and again, he too kept vigil through the night.

Verse 41 (padma.7.23.41)

upavāsaprabhāveṇa keśavoccāraṇena ca āvayoḥ sakalaṁ pāpaṁ vinaṣṭamabhavaddivaja

Brahmin, by the power of the fast, and by the utterance of Keshava's name, every sin of both of us was destroyed.

Verse 42 (padma.7.23.42)

tataḥ prabhāte vimale bhagavatyudite ravau jvarārditāhaṁ paṁcatvaṁ gatā brāhmaṇasattama

Then, at clear dawn, as the Blessed Sun rose, best of brahmins, I, afflicted by fever, met my death.

Verse 43 (padma.7.23.43)

saṁprāptapaṁcatāṁ dṛṣṭvā māmayaṁ ca tataḥ śuciḥ sahatyā maraṇaṁ bheje niṁditaḥ sakalairjanaiḥ

Seeing me dead, he too, now purified, chose to die alongside me, though condemned by all the people for it.

Verse 44 (padma.7.23.44)

sūryyajasya tataḥ preṣyairjvaladagninibhekṣaṇaiḥ baddhvā dṛḍhena pāśena nītau durgamavartmanā

Then the servants of the son of the Sun, their eyes like blazing fire, bound us both with a firm noose and led us away by a treacherous path.

Verse 45 (padma.7.23.45)

śubhakarmā śubhaṁ vāpi citragupto yamājñayā sarvaṁ vicārayāmāsa mūlātsa tu vicakṣaṇaḥ

Skillful Chitragupta, at Yama's command, examined all our deeds, both good and evil, from the very root.

Verse 46 (padma.7.23.46)

citragupta uvāca- yadyapyetau mahābāho mahāpātakināṁ varau tathāpi pātakairmuktau hyekādaśyāmupoṣaṇāt

Chitragupta said: Mighty-armed one, although these two are foremost among great sinners, still, by fasting on the Ekadashi day, they have already been freed from their sins.

Verse 47 (padma.7.23.47)

anicchayāpi yaḥ kuryātpuṇyamekādaśīvratam so'pi gacchetparaṁsthānaṁ sarvapāpavivarjitaḥ

Whoever performs the meritorious Ekadashi fast, even unintentionally, he too, freed from every sin, goes to the supreme abode.

Verse 48 (padma.7.23.48)

ityuktaścitraguptena dharmarājo mahāyaśāḥ āsanātsahasotthāya vavaṁde tāmamuṁca saḥ

Thus told by Chitragupta, the great and famous Dharmaraja rose at once from his seat, bowed to us, and undid our bonds.

Verse 49 (padma.7.23.49)

sugaṁdhaiścaṁdanairdivyairdhūpaiḥ puṣpaiśca mṛtyunā suvarṇābharaṇaireva maṁḍitau pāpavarjitau

By Death, we two, our sins now gone, were adorned with fragrant divine sandal paste, incense, flowers, and golden ornaments.

Verse 50 (padma.7.23.50)

phalairnānāvidhaistatra madhurairamṛtopamaiḥ bhāskariḥ kārayāmāsa prītyā bhojanamāvayoḥ

There the son of the Sun, with affection, fed us both various kinds of sweet fruits, comparable to nectar.

Verse 51 (padma.7.23.51)

atha stutvā stavairdivyaiḥ svayamāvāṁ yamaḥ prabhuḥ samāropya rathe divye provāceti kṛtāñjali

Then, praising us with divine hymns, Lord Yama himself mounted us upon a divine chariot and, joining his palms, spoke thus.

Verse 52 (padma.7.23.52)

yama uvāca- yuvāṁ puṇyavatāṁ śreṣṭhau sarvapāpavivarjitau yatrāste bhagavānviṣṇurgaṁcchetāṁ tatra saṁprati

Yama said: You two, freed from every sin, are foremost among the virtuous; now go to that place where the Blessed Lord Vishnu dwells.

Verse 53 (padma.7.23.53)

ityuktau dharmarājena vinayāvanatena vai athaitaduktamāvābhyāṁ natvā tatpādapaṅkaje

Thus told by Dharmaraja, humbly bowing, we two bowed at his lotus feet and spoke this.

Verse 54 (padma.7.23.54)

gaṁtavyaṁ nānyathā deva tadviṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padam kiṁtvasti narakaṁ draṣṭuṁ tvadgṛhasthaṁ spṛhāvayoḥ

"Lord, to that supreme abode of Vishnu we must indeed go, there is no other way; but we have a wish to see the hell that lies within your own domain."

Verse 55 (padma.7.23.55)

yamājñayā tato vipra rathamāruhya śobhanam duṣprekṣyā nirayā dṛṣṭā āvābhyāṁ tatra vistarāḥ

Brahmin, then, by Yama's permission, mounting a beautiful chariot, we two beheld there the vast hells, terrible to behold.

Verse 56 (padma.7.23.56)

brāhmaṇa uvāca- tatrāvasthā pāpavatāṁ yā yā dṛṣṭāḥ pativrate vistareṇa samākhyātuṁ tāstāḥ sarvāstvamarhasi

The brahmin said: O faithful wife, whatever conditions of sinners you saw there — be pleased to describe every one of them in full.

Verse 57 (padma.7.23.57)

puṇyātmānaḥ pathā yena vrajanti yamamaṁdiram pāpātmānaśca suśroṇi tanme kathaya vistarāt

By what path the virtuous travel to Yama's abode, and by what path the sinful — O lovely one, tell me this in full detail.

Verse 58 (padma.7.23.58)

puṇyātmā kīdṛśaṁ paśyettatra vaivasvataṁ prabhum puṇyātmanāṁ pāpināṁ ca paṁthānaṁ sukhaduḥkhadam

How does a virtuous soul there see Lord Vaivasvata? And how is the happy path of the virtuous, and the sorrowful path of sinners?

Verse 59 (padma.7.23.59)

suprājñovāca- ādau bravīmi paṁthānaṁ nṛṇāṁ puṇyavatāmaham śṛṇuṣva dvijaśārdūla śṛṇvatāṁ prītivarddhanam

Suprajna said: First I shall tell the path of virtuous men; tiger among brahmins, listen — it increases the joy of those who hear it.

Verse 60 (padma.7.23.60)

eteṣāṁ pāpakarmāṇi mahābhāga vicāraya dharmarājavacaḥ śrutvā citragupto mahattadā

Verse 164 (padma.7.23.164)

nātibhuktvā pāpaśeṣe jāyaṁte pāpayoniṣu pāpayonau samutpannā bhavaṁti vyādhipīḍitāḥ

Verse 165 (padma.7.23.165)

punaḥ pāpaprabhāvena nirayaṁ yāṁti pūrvavat tasmātpāpaṁ na kartavyaṁ kadācidapi sattamaiḥ

Then, by the power of that sin, they go to hell once more, just as before; therefore the virtuous should never, ever commit sin.

Verse 168 (padma.7.23.168)

jātau vai rājavaṁśe'sminviśuddhe dvijasattama atra bhuktvākhilānbhogānsarvasaṁpatsamanvitān

Verse 173 (padma.7.23.173)

anicchayāpi yatkṛtvā gatirevaṁvidhā'vayoḥ ekādaśīvrataṁ ye tu bhaktibhāvena kurvate

Even performing it unintentionally, such was the fate that came to us both — whoever, then, observes the Ekadashi fast with true devotion —

Verse 174 (padma.7.23.174)

— I do not know what they might attain, by the grace of Vasudeva. Thus, best of brahmins, all that you asked has been told.

Verse 175 (padma.7.23.175)
