Vyasa said: there is a city named Taladhvaja, resembling the world of the gods, famed throughout every world, and filled with throngs of virtuous men.
Verse 2 (padma.7.5.2)
tatrāsīdvikramo nāmā rājā śuddhakulodbhavaḥ dhārmikaḥ satyavādī ca prajāpālanatatparaḥ
There reigned a king named Vikrama, born of a pure lineage, righteous, truthful, and devoted to the protection of his subjects.
Verse 3 (padma.7.5.3)
tasya hārāvatī nāma vallabhā bhuvi durllabhā āsītsvakīyavadanaprabhājita śaśiprabhā
His beloved queen was named Haravati, one such as is hard to find on earth, whose face's radiance surpassed even the moon's own light.
Verse 4 (padma.7.5.4)
tasya saiva priyā rājñaḥ strīgaṇe'pi ca tiṣṭhati gaṅgeva saritāṁ bharttustiṣṭhatyapi saridgaṇe
That beloved of the king stood among the company of women just as the Ganga stands among the company of rivers, beloved of her lord, the sea.
Verse 5 (padma.7.5.5)
bhūdevadaivaparataḥ kālena kiyatā dvija vyajāyata sutastasyāṁ sarvalakṣaṇasaṁyutaḥ
O brahmin, after some time, by the grace of brahmins and gods, a son was born to her, endowed with every auspicious mark.
Verse 6 (padma.7.5.6)
By the rite prescribed in the scriptures, that king, learned in every scripture, gave him the name Madhava.
Verse 7 (padma.7.5.7)
tato'sau mādhavo vipraḥ kālena kiyatā balī sarvavidyāsaritpāraṁgataḥ sadguṇasaṁgataḥ
Then that Madhava, as time went on, became mighty, master of the entire ocean of learning, and endowed with fine qualities.
Verse 8 (padma.7.5.8)
athāsau yauvarājyena rājye narapatiḥ sutam siktavāṁstaṁ mahīdeva sarvadevagaṇārcakam
Then that king consecrated that son, O lord of the earth — a son devoted to the worship of every god — as heir apparent to the throne.
Verse 9 (padma.7.5.9)
ekasmindivase vipra caturaṁgabalairvṛtaḥ jagāma kautukenāsau mṛgayāyai mahadvanam
One day, O brahmin, surrounded by his four-fold army, he went with curiosity to a great forest for the hunt.
Verse 10 (padma.7.5.10)
tatra hatvā bahūñjantūnmadhyāhne samaye tataḥ kṛtavānnagare gaṁtumudyamaṁ vipinādasau
There, at midday, having slain many creatures, he made ready to return from the forest toward the city.
Verse 11 (padma.7.5.11)
nagaraṁ svakamāgacchatsasainyo mādhavo mudā dadarśa yuvatīmekāṁ sarasi snānatatparām
As Madhava, with delight, came toward his own city together with his army, he saw a young woman intent on bathing in a lake,
Verse 12 (padma.7.5.12)
snānārhadravyavasanairvyaktīkṛtakalevarām svakīyamukhasaundaryyajitapūrṇaniśākarām
her body adorned with garments and unguents fit for bathing, the beauty of her face outshining even the full moon.
Verse 13 (padma.7.5.13)
suvarṇakuṇḍaladvandva vibhrājadgaṇḍamaṇḍalām sudīrghakeśakaiśchanna nitaṁbāṁ cāruhāsinīm
The two circles of her cheeks shone with a pair of golden earrings, her exceedingly long hair covered her hips, and her laughter was sweet.
Verse 14 (padma.7.5.14)
suvarṇapadmakalikāṁ cārūnnatapayodharām mṛgārikṛśamadhyāṁ ca vasaṁte kokilasvarām
Her lovely, high breasts were like golden lotus buds, her waist slender as a deer's, and her voice like a cuckoo's in spring.
Verse 15 (padma.7.5.15)
yūnāṁ manoharā rājye kandarpeṇa mahātmanā āropitā patākeva sundarī sā vyajāyata
That beauty seemed born as though a very victory-banner, raised by the great god of love, over the kingdom of the young.
Verse 16 (padma.7.5.16)
tādṛśīṁ tāṁ samālokya prāntare saṅgavarjite kaḥ kāmavaśago na syātkṣitau prāṇānvahanpumān
Seeing such a woman in that lonely wilderness, what man on this earth, drawing breath, would not fall under the sway of desire?
Verse 17 (padma.7.5.17)
atha vikramaputro'sau tāmālokya varānanām kaṁdarpabāṇavraṇita hṛdayaśceti ciṁtayan
Then that son of Vikrama, Madhava, seeing that lovely-faced woman, his heart wounded by the arrow of the god of love, began to think,
Verse 18 (padma.7.5.18)
etasyāḥ sadṛśī kāpi na dṛṣṭā kṣitimaṇḍale etāmiha samāliṅgya saphalaṁ janma ceṣyate
"None like her has ever been seen upon this circle of the earth. Embracing her here, I shall count my birth fulfilled."
Verse 19 (padma.7.5.19)
śreṣṭho'smi sarvalokānāṁ vayastejoguṇairaham yadyapīndrāṁganeyaṁ syānnetavyādya tathāpi ca
I am, in years, in radiance, and in virtues, the very best of all people; even were she Indra's own queen, still I shall carry her off this day.
Verse 20 (padma.7.5.20)
parastrīharaṇe yo vā doṣo bhavati sāṁpratam ko vā śaknoti tadvaktuṁ yato rājā pitā mama
And who indeed can speak of any fault in abducting another man's wife, seeing that the king is my own father?"
Verse 21 (padma.7.5.21)
iti saṁciṁtya manasā sudṛḍhaṁ tena kāminā dūre saṁsthāpya sainyāni yayau sā snāti yatra ha
Having thought this firmly in his mind, that lust-driven man, stationing his forces at a distance, went to the place where she was bathing.
Verse 22 (padma.7.5.22)
aiśvaryaṁ ca madaścaiva kāmaścaiva mahītale traya ete vivekasya tejo ghnaṁti kimadbhutam
Power, arrogance, and desire — these three alone, upon this earth, destroy the very light of discernment; what wonder is there in this?
Verse 23 (padma.7.5.23)
pitāsya duritadhvaṁsī dharmarakṣākaro nṛṇām dhiksvayaṁ kāmadevo'sau mohayatyakhilaṁ jagat
His father was a destroyer of sins and protector of men's dharma; yet shame upon this god of love, who bewilders the entire universe!
Verse 24 (padma.7.5.24)
tamāyātaṁ samālokya vegena mahatā tataḥ ekākinī sā ramate bhṛśaṁ ciṁtākulābhavat
Seeing him coming with great swiftness, that woman, sporting there alone, grew exceedingly anxious.
Verse 25 (padma.7.5.25)
ekākinīṁ samālokya kāṁtārasthāṁ sayauvanām ayaṁ dhāvati vegena tanme manasi vartate
"Seeing me alone in my youth, in this forest, he runs toward me with such speed" — thus it remained fixed in her mind.
Verse 26 (padma.7.5.26)
jalpaṁti munayaḥ sarve dharmo rakṣati rakṣitaḥ na ca jñātavyamatraiva kimatra ca bhaviṣyati
All the sages say: dharma alone, when protected, protects in turn. Nor can it be known what will happen here next.
Verse 27 (padma.7.5.27)
sahāyahīnaṁ yatsthānaṁ puro dhāvati śatravaḥ ślāghyaṁ palāyanaṁ tatra nivāsaḥ prāṇanāśakaḥ
Where, in a place bereft of helpers, an enemy comes rushing straight on, there flight alone is praiseworthy; to remain there is to court destruction of life.
Verse 28 (padma.7.5.28)
ityālocya varārohā savyakacche ghaṭaṁ tataḥ kṛtvā palāyane bhītyā manaścakre sarovarāt
Thinking thus, that beauty, pressing a water-jar under her left arm, resolved in fear to flee from the lake.
Verse 29 (padma.7.5.29)
tataḥ sa mādhavaścāpi javena mahatā dvija evaṁ tasyāḥ puro gatvā prasāritakaraḥ sthitaḥ
O brahmin, then that Madhava too, with great speed, came before her and stood there with his hand outstretched.
Verse 30 (padma.7.5.30)
śrīmādhava uvāca- varāṅgane cārudehe suyauvanabalānmama palāyase mano hṛtvā hatosmyahamacetanaḥ
Sri Madhava said: O lovely one, O beautiful of form! Robbing me of my heart by the force of your full youth, you flee away; I have become as one senseless.
Verse 31 (padma.7.5.31)
kiṁ nāma caṁcalāpāṁgi cārvaṅgi tava kaḥ patiḥ svargātkiṁ vā gatāsi tvaṁ tvattulyā nāsti bhūtale
O restless-eyed one, O lovely of form, what is your name, who is your husband? Have you come down from heaven? None on this earth is your equal.
Verse 32 (padma.7.5.32)
sundari tvamiha śreṣṭhā sarvalakṣaṇasaṁyutā kathaṁ vahasi pānīyaṁ dāsīva kamalānane
O beautiful one, you are supreme here, endowed with every auspicious mark. O lotus-faced one, why do you carry water like a servant girl?
Verse 33 (padma.7.5.33)
payodharau śātakuṁbhau sadā vahasi vakṣasi kakṣeṇa jalakumbhaṁ ca komalāṅgīdamadbhutam
Your two breasts, golden as jars, forever adorn your bosom; and yet a water-pot under your arm — this, O tender-limbed one, is a very wonder.
Verse 34 (padma.7.5.34)
divākarakarātyaṁta saṁtapte pathi lohitāḥ pādāṁgulyaṁtarā bhāṁti japānāṁ kalikā iva
Upon the path burning fierce beneath the sun's rays, the redness between your toes gleams like the buds of the hibiscus flower.
Verse 35 (padma.7.5.35)
suśroṇi bhaja māṁ prītyā tyaja kuṁbhaṁ varānane tava duḥkhāvasāno'bhūnmama darśanamātrataḥ
O fair-hipped one, unite with me lovingly, O beautiful-faced one; set down this jar. Your sorrow has already ended by the mere sight of me.
Verse 36 (padma.7.5.36)
śrīmadvikramabhūbharttuḥ putro'haṁ mādhavāhvayaḥ sarvabhāvairbhaviṣyāmi varāṅgastava sundari
I am the son of the glorious king Vikrama, known by the name Madhava; O beauty, I shall in every way become your excellent husband.
Verse 37 (padma.7.5.37)
mamastrīgaṇamadhyeṣu subhagā tvaṁ bhaviṣyasi supuṣpavallī madhyeṣu dvirephasyeva mālatī
Among the company of my women you shall be the most fortunate, as the malati flower is to the bee amid a garland of fine blossoms.
Verse 38 (padma.7.5.38)
athavā mama vākyaṁ tvaṁ garvāllaṁghitumicchasi na tyakṣāmi tathāpi tvāṁ yato'haṁ nṛpateḥ sutaḥ
Or if, out of pride, you wish to defy my word, still I shall not release you, for I am the king's own son.
Verse 39 (padma.7.5.39)
vyāsa uvāca- tenoktaṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā paṁthānaṁ pravihāya sā tasthāvadhomukhī vipra prāheti ca śanaiḥ śanaiḥ
Vyasa said: hearing his words, she left the path, O brahmin, and stood there with her face bowed down; then, softly, little by little, she began to speak.
Verse 40 (padma.7.5.40)
kadāpi cetparasyāpi na śṛṇoti vaco mama tathāpi lajjāṁ saṁtyajya vakṣyāmyeva bhavāgrataḥ
"Even should someone refuse ever to hear my words, still, setting shame aside, I shall speak before you.
Verse 41 (padma.7.5.41)
tathā hyahaṁ mahāvīra subāhukṣattriyapriyā nayāmi devapūjārthaṁ jalaṁ caṁdrakalā hyaham
O great hero, I am the beloved of a kshatriya named Subahu; I carry water for the worship of the gods — I am named Chandrakala.
Verse 42 (padma.7.5.42)
yadvaco bhavatā proktaṁ na ca tattvatkulocitam tvadvaṁśaprabhavāḥ sarve parastrīṣunapuṁsakāḥ
The words you have spoken are not fit for your own lineage; all those born in your line should be as though impotent toward other men's wives.
Verse 43 (padma.7.5.43)
ahamekākinī nārī vīrāṇāṁ prabhavo bhavān balādāliṅgya māmatra yaśaḥ kiṁ te bhaviṣyati
I am a lone woman, and you the very foremost of heroes; embracing me here by force — what glory shall come to you from that?
Verse 44 (padma.7.5.44)
parastriyaṁ samāliṅgya kṣaṇamātrasukhaṁ bhavet ihāpakīrtiḥ śeṣaṁ ca duḥkhaṁ kalpaśatādhikam
In embracing another man's wife, a moment's pleasure comes; but in this world what remains is infamy, and suffering beyond a hundred kalpas.
Verse 45 (padma.7.5.45)
karmabhūmiriyaṁ śūra puṇyamatra vidhīyatām parastrīharaṇe cittaṁ kadācinmāṁ kariṣyasi
O hero, this is a land of action; here merit alone should be practiced. Never fix your mind upon the abduction of another man's wife.
Verse 46 (padma.7.5.46)
lobhātpravartate kāmaḥ kāmātpāpaṁ pravarttate pāpānmṛtyurmṛte'pi syāddustare narake sthitiḥ
From greed desire arises, from desire sin arises, from sin comes death, and after death a dwelling in a hell hard to escape.
Verse 47 (padma.7.5.47)
sarve'pi tvadguṇā vyarthaṁ tvajjanmāpi ca niṣphalam kāmasya vaśatāṁ gatvā raṁtumiccheḥ parastriyam
All your virtues then become vain, your very birth fruitless, if, falling under the sway of desire, you wish to enjoy another man's wife.
Verse 48 (padma.7.5.48)
māṁsamūtrapūrīṣāsthinirmitaṁ me kalevaram etadeva samālokya smarasya vaśatāṁ gataḥ
This body of mine is made of flesh, urine, excrement, and bone; and it is this alone, seen, that has brought you under the sway of the god of love.
Verse 49 (padma.7.5.49)
bhūpālavaṁśotpattitvātpaurebhyo na bibheṣi kim mastakopari garjaṁtaṁ nekṣase samavarttinam
Do you, though born in a royal line, not fear even your own townspeople? Do you not see, roaring above your very head, Time itself, impartial toward all?
Verse 50 (padma.7.5.50)
grasaṁti baḍiśaṁ matsyāste sarve jñānavarjitāḥ jñānīcetprāpya baḍiśaṁ bhavānkasmādgrasiṣyasi
The fish that swallow the hook are all devoid of knowledge. If you are truly wise, why, even finding the hook before you, would you swallow it?
Verse 51 (padma.7.5.51)
vivekastriṣu lokeṣu saṁpadāṁ paramaṁ padam aviveko hi lokānāmāpadāṁ paramaṁ padam
Discernment is, in all three worlds, the supreme seat of prosperity; and lack of discernment alone is, for all people, the supreme seat of calamity."
Verse 52 (padma.7.5.52)
tayoktaṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā mādhavaḥ kāmamohitaḥ uvāca jaimine vācaṁ vinayāvanataḥ punaḥ
Hearing these words of hers, Madhava, bewildered by desire, bowing humbly, spoke to her again.
Verse 53 (padma.7.5.53)
tavodvīkṣaṇanārāca dhārājarjaramānasam priye māṁ trāhi trāhīti tavāsmi śaraṇaṁ gataḥ
O beloved, by the stream of arrows of your very glance my mind has been shattered; save me, save me — I have come to take refuge in you.
Verse 54 (padma.7.5.54)
tāvatpriyatamā nārī yāvattiṣṭhati yauvane mṛṇālakoṣāṁ nalinīṁ hemabhṛṁgo na gacchati
So long as the beloved woman remains in her youth, the golden bee does not depart from the lotus's inner store of pollen.
Verse 55 (padma.7.5.55)
prasīda hariṇīnetre rakṣa māṁ sevakaṁ svakam tvadvācaṁ nīrasāṁ śrutvā bhinatti hṛdayaṁ mama
O doe-eyed one, be gracious, protect your own servant; hearing your bitter words my heart is torn asunder.
Verse 56 (padma.7.5.56)
candrakalovāca- tyaja duḥkhaṁ mahāvīra śṛṇu madvacanaṁ śubham pravakṣyāmi manoduḥkhaṁ haṁtuṁ yadbhavataḥ kṣamām
Chandrakala said: O great hero, abandon your sorrow, hear my auspicious word; I shall tell you something to end this grief of your mind.
Verse 57 (padma.7.5.57)
samudrapāre vikhyātā puraṁdarapuropamā plakṣadvīpe'sti dīpyaṁtī vikhyātā saṁjñayā purī
Beyond the ocean, in Plakshadvipa, there is a city renowned like Indra's own capital, resplendent with its own light.
Verse 58 (padma.7.5.58)
guṇākarāhvayastatra rājā śreṣṭho mahāyaśāḥ āste sarvagaṇairyuktaḥ pratāpe'gnisamo balī
There reigns a king named Gunakara, excellent and highly renowned, endowed with every virtue, mighty in majesty as fire itself.
Verse 59 (padma.7.5.59)

sulocanākhyā tatkanyā vīratatkukṣisaṁbhavā sadūharūpairajayatsakalānsundarīgaṇān
Their daughter is named Sulochana, born of that hero's queen; by her lovely form she has conquered every gathering of beauties.
Verse 61 (padma.7.5.61)
tasyā rūpaṁ guṇaughaṁ ca varṇituṁ bhuvi kaḥ kṣamaḥ tadrūpadarśamālokyāsṛjadanyāṁ svayaṁ vidhiḥ
Who on this earth is able to describe her beauty and her wealth of virtues? To behold her form, it seems, the Creator fashioned an entirely new creation of his own.
Verse 62 (padma.7.5.62)

Verse 81 (padma.7.5.81)
gauraveṇa vinā vīra na satāṁ vikramo bhavet janiṣyati kathaṁ vahnirvinā kāṣṭhaṁ ghṛtādibhiḥ
O hero, without honor the valor of good men never comes forth; how, without wood and clarified butter, can fire be kindled?
Verse 82 (padma.7.5.82)
ahamīdṛgime sarve nānābhūṣāsamanvitāḥ na tu siṁhasamāḥ śvānaḥ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ
I remain in such a state while all these other horses are decked with manifold ornaments; but dogs, however decked with every ornament, do not become like the lion.
Verse 83 (padma.7.5.83)

O king, O lord, by the very manner of my circling gait I am able to encircle this earth, with its mountains, continents, and oceans, in a single instant.
Verse 84 (padma.7.5.84)

Verse 85 (padma.7.5.85)
pareṇa dattaḥ saṁtāpaḥ sadā tiṣṭhati nottame salilaṁ vahnisaṁtaptaṁ kṣaṇācchītalatāṁ vrajet

Verse 86 (padma.7.5.86)
svamādhuryairbhavedikṣuḥ kṣaṇamapi hi tṛptaye ityuktvā taṁ namaskṛtya turaṁgaṁ nṛpanaṁdanaḥ
The sugarcane, by its own sweetness, becomes a source of satisfaction in but an instant — having said this, the prince bowed to that horse.
Verse 87 (padma.7.5.87)
tataḥ śubhe kṣaṇe tasya pṛṣṭhamāruhya vājinaḥ praceṣṭākhyena bhṛtyena vilaṁghya jaladhiṁ yayau
Then, at an auspicious moment, mounting the back of that steed, together with a servant named Pracesta, he journeyed, crossing the ocean.
Verse 88 (padma.7.5.88)
purīṁ sarvaguṇairyuktāṁ puraṁdarapuropamām jagāma mādhavo bhrājansaudhāvalibhirujjvalām
Radiant, Madhava arrived at that city, endowed with every virtue, resembling Indra's own capital, resplendent with rows of lofty palaces.
Verse 89 (padma.7.5.89)
tatropasthāṁ ca yuvatīṁ gaṁdhinīṁ mādhavo dvijaḥ dṛṣṭvāsmitamukho vākyamuvāceti ca komalam
There, seeing a young woman named Gandhini standing before him, the brahmin Madhava, his face smiling, spoke these gentle words.
Verse 90 (padma.7.5.90)
vṛddhe mātarahaṁ pārtho dinamekaṁ tavālaye sthātumicchāmi kā'jñāte dhanavānmādhavāhvayaḥ
O aged mother, I am a traveler and wish to stay one day in your home. Who might that be? — a wealthy man named Madhava.
Verse 91 (padma.7.5.91)
ātitheyī gaṁdhinī sā tamādāyātithiṁ tataḥ harṣitvā svagṛhaṁ tatra jagāmātyaṁtabhaktitaḥ
That Gandhini, given to the honoring of guests, taking him as her guest, led him with joy and the utmost devotion to her own home.
Verse 92 (padma.7.5.92)
yathoktavidhinā vipra tayā tasyārhaṇā kṛtā mādhavastāṁ niśāṁ ninye ciṁtāvyākulamānasaḥ
O brahmin, by the rite prescribed in the scripture she honored him. Madhava spent that night with his mind troubled by anxiety.
Verse 93 (padma.7.5.93)
atha prabhāte vimale gandhinyāḥ purato dvija mādhavaḥ sakalaṁ kāryaṁ kathayāmāsa bhūsuraḥ
Then, in the clear light of dawn, O brahmin, before Gandhini, that Madhava, in brahmin guise, told her his whole purpose.
Verse 94 (padma.7.5.94)
devī sulocanāyāśca tasminneva dine śubhe gandhādivāsanaṁ karma racayāmāsa sā ca tat

Verse 95 (padma.7.5.95)
śrutvādhivāsanaṁ karma rājaputryāstato dvija śokasāgarakallola nikaro mādhavo'bhavat
O brahmin, hearing of this pre-nuptial rite of the princess, Madhava sank amid the waves of an ocean of grief.
Verse 96 (padma.7.5.96)
yadarthaṁ rājyavasatirmayā tyaktā tadicchunā yadarthaṁ bāṁdhavāstyaktā laṁghitaśca mahodadhiḥ
For whose sake I abandoned kingdom and home, at whose desire I forsook my own kinsmen and crossed the great ocean,
Verse 97 (padma.7.5.97)
adyaiva tasyā daivena bhaviṣyatyadhivāsanam niṣphalāḥ sakalā eva yāvaṁto vihitāḥ śramāḥ
her own pre-nuptial rite, by chance, takes place this very day. All the labors I undertook have come entirely to nothing.
Verse 98 (padma.7.5.98)
Yet let no one say Madhava, wholly deluded, abandoned everything; whoever proceeds knowing the true measure of the task, his effort never comes to nothing.
Verse 99 (padma.7.5.99)
etadviciṁtya manasā mādhavo'sau punaḥ punaḥ mālāpuṣpādike kāryaṁ lilekha premavarṇitam
Thinking this again and again in his mind, Madhava composed a letter, filled with words of love, to be sent with a garland of flowers.
Verse 100 (padma.7.5.100)

Verse 101 (padma.7.5.101)
tvacceṭī tatra kāpyasti kanye candrakalāhvayā tayā tavaguṇagrāmaḥ kathito me purā kila
A handmaid of yours, named Chandrakala, is there; it was she who first told me of the wealth of your own virtues.
Verse 102 (padma.7.5.102)
tvadguṇagrāmasaṁlagnacitto'haṁ nimnasāgaram vilaṅghya turagārūḍhaḥ samāyātaḥ purīṁ tava
My heart fixed on the wealth of your virtues, crossing the deep ocean, mounted upon a horse, I have come to your very city.
Verse 103 (padma.7.5.103)
adhunā māṁ varatvena vṛṇu kanye sulocane yataḥ saṁsāramadhye'smiṁstavāsmi śaraṇaṁ gataḥ
Now, O maiden Sulochana, accept me as your husband, for amid this world I have come to take refuge in you alone.
Verse 104 (padma.7.5.104)
yathā guṇavatīṁ tvāṁ hi nānyo jānāti tatpumān
As you truly are, endowed with virtue, no other man knows you.
Verse 105 (padma.7.5.105)
sarojinīguṇaṁ vetti bhṛṁga eva na darduraḥ śubhrasya jaladasyāpi gaganaikasya nodayaḥ
The bee alone knows the lotus's true virtue, not the frog; the rising of the pure cloud too belongs to the sky alone.
Verse 106 (padma.7.5.106)
tathāpi na bhajedanyaṁ vinā candraṁ kumudvatī atha tallikhanaṁ vīro mālākārapriyā kare
Yet the night-lotus desires none other but the moon." — having written thus, that hero placed into the hand of the garland-maker's wife,
Verse 107 (padma.7.5.107)
svarṇāṁgulīya sahitaṁ dadau sa vinayo nṛpaḥ puṣpamālāṁtare kṛtvā taṁ lekhaṁ sāṁgulīyakam
along with a golden ring, that letter, given with all humility. Placing the letter, together with the ring, within a garland of flowers,
Verse 108 (padma.7.5.108)
rājaputrī samīpe sā gaṁdhinī tarasā yayau puṣpamālāṁ baliṁ tasyai datvā sā gaṁdhinī tataḥ
that Gandhini went swiftly to the princess. Presenting the garland of flowers as an offering, that Gandhini then,
Verse 109 (padma.7.5.109)
tasthau baddhāñjalirbhūtvā dūraṁ gatvā bhiyā kiyat tataḥ sā rājatanayā likhitaṁ sāṁgulīyakam
with joined palms, withdrew somewhat, standing at a distance out of apprehension. Then that princess, seeing the entire letter
Verse 110 (padma.7.5.110)
vilokya sakalaṁ mūlātpapāṭhātyaṁtapaṇḍitā sāpi tatpṛṣṭhapatre tu tadyogyamuttaraṁ dvija
along with the ring, being most learned, read it fully from the beginning. She too, on the reverse of that letter, wrote a fitting reply,
Verse 111 (padma.7.5.111)
alikhadvismitā kanyā yadyacca sarvamucyate rājaputra mahābāho tvadvākyamakhilaṁ śrutam
O brahmin, that maiden, astonished, wrote all that is now told — O mighty-armed prince, your entire message has been heard.
Verse 112 (padma.7.5.112)
śṛṇu sattama vākyaṁ me yathocitamidaṁ vacaḥ adyādhivāsanaṁ karma śvo vivāho mama dhruvam
O best one, hear my own word, spoken as is fitting — this very day is my pre-nuptial rite, and tomorrow, without fail, is my wedding.
Verse 113 (padma.7.5.113)
pituryatsaṁmataṁ kāryaṁ pṛthivyāṁko'pi natyajet kārye tu duḥkhasādhye tu kāryo nātiśramo janaiḥ
A task approved by one's father, none on this earth may abandon; yet in a task hard to accomplish, people should not exert themselves beyond measure.
Verse 114 (padma.7.5.114)
kāryesiddhe śramo na syādasiddhe śrama eva hi tathāpi śṛṇu vakṣyāmi yena prāpnoti māṁ bhavān
When the task succeeds, the labor is no longer felt as labor; when it fails, it remains mere labor. Still, hear what I now say, by which you may attain me.
Verse 115 (padma.7.5.115)
yadartho bhavatā caiva samudropi ca laṁghitaḥ mayā pradakṣaṇī kāryo varo vidyādharo hyayam
That for which you have crossed even the ocean is this — I must circle round in homage a suitor, one who is a Vidyadhara.
Verse 116 (padma.7.5.116)
tatpuro'haṁ gamiṣyāmi nānābharaṇabhūṣitā vāmabāhūrddhvaṁ kṛtvā ca vīraḥ syānmama saṁmukhaḥ
I myself shall go before him, adorned with manifold ornaments; raising his left arm aloft, that hero shall stand facing me.
Verse 117 (padma.7.5.117)
yena māṁ śakyate netuṁ sa me bhartā bhaviṣyati satyaṁ satyamidaṁ satyaṁ patre'smiṁllikhitaṁ mayā
Whoever is then able to carry me away shall become my husband. This is true, true, this is true — this I have written in this very letter.
Verse 118 (padma.7.5.118)
anyathā sudṛḍhaṁ kāryaṁ laṁghituṁ na hi śakyate etadvilikhya sā kanyā tasyā eva kare dadau
Otherwise this firmly settled matter cannot be transgressed — having written this, that maiden placed the letter into her hand.
Verse 119 (padma.7.5.119)

She too, taking that letter, went to Madhava. Reading what had been written in that letter, Madhava,
Verse 120 (padma.7.5.120)
bhūyopi likhitaṁ vipra lilekhātyaṁtakautukaiḥ tvayā yaduktaṁ he kanye dhanye dhanyakulodbhave
O brahmin, with great eagerness wrote once more: "O maiden, O blessed one, O one born in a blessed lineage! What you have said,
Verse 121 (padma.7.5.121)
tadeva manmataṁ sarvaṁ ko'pi nāstyatra saṁśayaḥ tatastu gaṁdhinī bhūyo gatvā tannikaṭe dvija
that same is my own resolve as well — there is no doubt in this." Then that Gandhini, going again to her side, O brahmin,
Verse 122 (padma.7.5.122)
dadau sulocanāyai sā likhanaṁ sundarākṣaram atha tallikhanaṁ jñātvā kumārāṁgī kṛtaṁ dvija
gave Sulochana that letter, written in fine, beautiful characters. O brahmin, learning what was written in that letter, that princess,
Verse 123 (padma.7.5.123)
babhūvātyantasaṁhṛṣṭā vismitā ca punaḥ punaḥ tasminnasaṁśayaṁ kāryaṁ yadāsau svīkṛtaṁ dadau

Verse 130 (padma.7.5.130)

yathā sumūrtiḥ puruṣo na tathā bhāti nindayā ullāso gātrabhaṁgaśca mandadṛṣṭiśca vismitam
A well-formed man is not diminished in this way by mere criticism; delight, the turn of a limb, a soft glance, and wonder —
Verse 135 (padma.7.5.135)
sarvāṇi viṣṇucihnāni nidrāyāṁ mṛgalocane saṁdaṣṭauṣṭhapuṭākṣepātprokto nottiṣṭhati dhruvam

Verse 136 (padma.7.5.136)

Verse 141 (padma.7.5.141)
ājñāṁ kuru mahābhāga gacchāmi nijamaṁdiram mādhava uvāca- tiṣṭheti yadi vā vacmi kanye garvastadā bhavet
O great one, give me leave — I go to my own home. Madhava said: If I say "stay," O maiden, that would seem like arrogance on my part;
Verse 142 (padma.7.5.142)
gaccheti vacanaṁ vaktuṁ nāyāti vadanānmama svayaṁ vicārya cārvaṁgi yadyuktaṁ tadvidhīyatām
yet the word "go" too does not come from my own mouth. O lovely one, decide for yourself; do whatever is fitting.
Verse 143 (padma.7.5.143)
satyehavacanaṁ tasminbhaviṣyasi sutatparā ityuktā tena sā kanyā harṣitā svagṛhaṁ gatā
"If there be truth in these words, you shall remain devoted to me." So spoken by him, that maiden, well pleased, went to her own home.
Verse 144 (padma.7.5.144)

tatraiva mādhavastasthau vṛto bahuparicchadaiḥ cāruvidyādhara eva sthito vidyādharo varaḥ
Madhava remained there, surrounded by many retainers; that finest of Vidyadharas himself dwelt there, resembling a lovely Vidyadhara.
Verse 145 (padma.7.5.145)

Somewhere song, somewhere dance, somewhere the clamor of voices, somewhere a row of lamps — all this was taking place at once in that city.
Verse 147 (padma.7.5.147)

O Jaimini, there, where the entire sky all around had become filled with clusters of manifold banners and white royal mansions,
Verse 149 (padma.7.5.149)

some were blowing conches, sounding drums, kettledrums, and cymbals; some were playing sweet and rousing instruments.
Verse 150 (padma.7.5.150)

Then all those young women, like lotus buds, their faces moonlike, sang songs of sweetness and beauty.
Verse 151 (padma.7.5.151)
parasparaṁ yauvanato gharṣaṇacyutamālayā prasvedāmbugaladgaṁdhairbabhau kanyeva tatra bhūḥ
With the fragrance of sweat, fallen from the rubbing together of garlands amid youthful ardor, the very earth there seemed adorned like a bride.
Verse 152 (padma.7.5.152)
gaṁbhārīkāṣṭharacitaṁ pīṭhamāruhya sundarī jñātibhirveṣṭitā yātā varaṁ sthānaṁ sulocanā
Mounting a palanquin fashioned from gambhari wood, that beauty, surrounded by her kinsfolk, set out toward the place of the bridegroom.
Verse 153 (padma.7.5.153)
atrāṁtare vikramaputra eṣa śayyopariṣṭātkila labdhanidraḥ na veda daivena vivāhakāryaṁ sulocanāyāśca sulocanāyāḥ
Meanwhile that son of Vikrama had fallen asleep upon his couch, sunk deep in slumber; by fate's own working he knew nothing of Sulochana's approaching wedding.
Verse 154 (padma.7.5.154)
vidhātṛmāyāśatamohitānāṁ kadāpi na syādbhuvane sukhāya tataḥ svasaṁketavidhiṁ jano'yaṁ vismṛtya nidrāmabhajatsukhena
Those bewildered by the Creator's hundreds of illusions never find happiness in this world. Then that man, forgetting the very plan he had arranged, sank happily into sleep.
Verse 155 (padma.7.5.155)
vanaṁ parityajya kṛśānubhītyā jalaṁ praviṣṭā nalinī sukhārtham saṁdahyate tatra himānalena yadyasya karma na tadanyathā syāt
Fleeing the forest out of fear of fire, the lotus-plant enters the water for the sake of safety, yet there too it is burned by the frost's own fire — whatever a being's own destiny is, it cannot be otherwise.
Verse 156 (padma.7.5.156)
vedādiśāstramakhilaṁ prapaṭhaṁtu lokāḥ kurvaṁtu nāmakṣitipālasevām ugraṁ tapaḥ pratidivaṁ pratisādhayaṁtu na śrīstathāpi ca bhajatyatibhāgyahīnam
Let people study every scripture from the Vedas, let them serve kings even in name only, let them daily perform fierce austerity — still fortune does not favor the utterly luckless.
Verse 157 (padma.7.5.157)
mastakopari tiṣṭhaṁti duḥkhāni ca sukhāni ca anyakāle samāyānti haṭhādanyāni sattama
O best one, sorrow and joy alike hover above one's head; at one time one comes, and by force, at another time, another comes.
Verse 158 (padma.7.5.158)

Verse 159 (padma.7.5.159)
dhigastvamuṁ rājaputraṁ daivamāyāvimohitaḥ vismṛtya nijasaṁketaṁ nidrāṁ saṁprāpya sevate
Shame upon this prince, who, bewildered by fate's own illusion, has forgotten his own plan and given himself over to sleep.
Verse 160 (padma.7.5.160)
asau duḥkhāgatā kanyā varasya nikaṭe'dhunā kiṁ bhavennayane tādṛksaṁketaṁ yāti niṣphalam
This jewel of a maiden has come here, in sorrow, close to her chosen groom; could it be that this whole plan should come to nothing, right before our very eyes?
Verse 161 (padma.7.5.161)
tiṣṭha tvaṁ vai pāpakarmannidrāṁ saṁsevya mastake mayā hayaṁ samāruhya netavyā sā varāṅganā
O sinful one, remain lying here, your head given over to sleep; I myself, mounting the horse, shall bring that beauty here.
Verse 162 (padma.7.5.162)
kanyāratnaṁ ca ratnaṁ ca mudā prāpnoti durllabham tadā kiṁ sevayā kāryaṁ mādhavasyāsya durmateḥ
Whoever attains, with delight, both a jewel of a maiden and other jewels besides — what need is there then of service to this foolish Madhava?
Verse 163 (padma.7.5.163)
dhanārthaṁ kriyate sevā sarvabhāvena bhūbhujām taccenmudā svayaṁ prāptaṁ sevāduḥkhena kiṁ tadā
It is for wealth alone that kings are served with one's whole being; if it comes of its own accord, with delight, what use is there in the pain of service?
Verse 164 (padma.7.5.164)
praceṣṭa iti saṁciṁtya samāruhya turaṁgamam sā rājakanyā yatrāste yayau tatra nabhaḥ pathā
Thinking thus, Pracesta, mounting the horse, went by the pathway of the sky to where that princess was.
Verse 165 (padma.7.5.165)
varaṁ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya smaraṁtī samayaṁ svakam vāmahastaṁ samuddhṛtya tasthau vidyādharāgrataḥ
Circling round in homage to her chosen groom, remembering the very plan agreed upon, she raised her left hand aloft and stood facing that Vidyadhara.
Verse 166 (padma.7.5.166)
haste vidhṛtya tāṁ kanyāṁ praceṣṭo'tijavena saḥ pṛṣṭhe niveśayāmāsa saptestasya mahābalaḥ
Taking that maiden by the hand, that Pracesta, with great swiftness, seated her upon the back of that mighty horse.
Verse 167 (padma.7.5.167)
tāṁ rājaputrīmādāya purīṁ kāṁcīṁ suśobhanām tāmathāsau samālokya praceṣṭo'titvarānvitaḥ
Taking that princess, he set out toward the beautiful city of Kanchi. Then, beholding her, that Pracesta, filled with great eagerness,
Verse 168 (padma.7.5.168)
uvāca pravahanpāṇiṁ naṣṭamānasasādhvasaḥ praceṣṭa uvāca- samudrāṁtaratīrasthāṁ kāṁcīṁ nāma purīmimām
extending his hand, his fear cast aside, spoke these words. Pracesta said: this city, standing on the shore of the ocean, named Kanchi,
Verse 169 (padma.7.5.169)
paśya sarvatra vikhyātāṁ janasarvasukhapradām atra mādhavavīrasya tasya vidyādharasya vā
behold — famed everywhere, giver of happiness to all people. Here neither that hero Madhava, nor that Vidyadhara,
Verse 170 (padma.7.5.170)
kasyāpi ca bhayaṁ nāsti paśya candranibhānane maccitteṁdhanasaṁlagnāṁ kāmānalaśikhāvalim
nor anyone else, holds any power to frighten — behold, O moon-faced one. This chain of flames, the fire of desire, fed on the fuel of my own mind,
Verse 171 (padma.7.5.171)
kucakuṁbhakaraiḥ siddhaṁ nirvāṇaṁ dehi suṁdari tvaccārumukhapadme'sminmanmukhabhramaro'dhunā
grant it the coolness perfected by the hands of your own breasts, O beauty. Upon your lovely lotus face, this bee that is my own mouth
Verse 172 (padma.7.5.172)
icchetpātuṁ madhūnyatra kā'jñāte tiṣṭhati priye tvaccārugātrasaṁsparśāccharaistudati māṁ smaraḥ
now longs to drink its nectar — how long, O unwitting one, will you remain thus, beloved? By the mere thought of touching your lovely limbs, the god of love pierces me with his arrows.
Verse 173 (padma.7.5.173)
trāhi trāhi priye trāhi tavāsmi śaraṇaṁ gataḥ iti bruvaṁtaṁ taṁ mūḍhamabhivīkṣya varāṁganā
Save me, save me, O beloved, save me — I have come to take refuge in you. — seeing that fool speaking thus, that beauty,
Verse 174 (padma.7.5.174)
śokāgnitaptasarvāṅgī ciṁtayāmāsa cetasā ayaṁ mūḍho duṣṭaceṣṭaḥ praceṣṭo nāma vedhasā
her every limb burning with the fire of grief, began to think in her heart — this fool, of wicked conduct, named Pracesta,
Verse 175 (padma.7.5.175)
likhitaḥ kiṁ lalāṭe me yanmayā hā hatāsmyaham kva mātā kva ca me tātaḥ kva ca vidyādharo varaḥ
was it truly this that fate had written upon my brow, that I should today be so utterly undone? Where is my mother, where my father, and where that Vidyadhara husband of mine?
Verse 176 (padma.7.5.176)
anenāhaṁ samānītā dhigastu ghaṭanāṁ vidheḥ alaṁ lokāḥ prakurvaṁti garvaṁ jagati sarvadā
By this very man I have been brought here — shame upon this contrivance of fate! In vain do people ever take pride in this world;
Verse 177 (padma.7.5.177)
vetti cchetuṁ garvavṛkṣaṁ vidhātā ghaṭanāsinā tathāpi vipade dhairyaṁ nirbhayatvaṁ ca tatparam
fate alone knows how to cut down the very tree of pride with the sword of its own contrivance. Yet in calamity, patience, fearlessness,
Verse 178 (padma.7.5.178)
upāyāśceti catvāraḥ praśasyā dīrghadarśibhiḥ ityālokya hṛdā kanyā vacobhiḥ komalākṣaraiḥ
and resourceful means — these four are praised by those of far-reaching vision. Having thought this in her heart, that maiden, with gentle words,
Verse 179 (padma.7.5.179)
praceṣṭaṁ pratyuvācāsau sarvakāryavicakṣaṇā sulocanovāca dṛḍhaṁ kuru mano vīra kanyāhamavivāhitā
she being skilled in every matter, replied to Pracesta. Sulochana said: O hero, steady your own mind; I am an unmarried maiden.
Verse 180 (padma.7.5.180)
māṁ samāliṅgya mohena kathaṁ yāsyasi durmate śāstroktavidhinā vīra vivāhena gṛhāṇa mām
Embracing me out of mere infatuation, O foolish one, where would you go? O hero, by the rite prescribed in scripture, through proper marriage take me for your own.
Verse 181 (padma.7.5.181)

matpāṇigrahaṇaṁ śīghraṁ kuru jāḍyaṁgṛhīti ca aṁtardṛḍhaṁ bahiḥ ślakṣṇaṁ badarīphalavadvacaḥ
and swiftly take my hand in marriage — set aside this foolishness. — such words, firm within and honeyed without, like the fruit of the jujube tree.
Verse 184 (padma.7.5.184)

Verse 185 (padma.7.5.185)

taking a bracelet, went off toward that city. Then she began to think — surely this ordinance of fate is worthy of praise,
Verse 186 (padma.7.5.186)
yata āvāṁ parityajya mūḍho'sau harṣito yayau kiṁ kartavyaṁ kva gaṁtavyaṁ kva sthātavyaṁ mayādhunā

mayi sthitāyāmeteṣāṁ bhavejjīvanarakṣaṇam mṛtāyāmapi yāsyaṁti trayo'pyete tu paṁcatām
Only while I live can the lives of these be preserved; should I die, all three of these too shall meet their death.

māmuddiśya yadā prāṇāḥ yakṣyaṁte te'tra me janāḥ bhaviṣyāmi tadā nūnamahaṁ tadvadhabhāginī
When these, my own people, cast off their lives here on my account, then surely I shall become a partaker in their very death.

prāṇeṣu ca vinaṣṭeṣu sarvameva vinaśyati teṣu sthiteṣu sakalaṁ stokastokena sidhyati
When life is lost, everything is lost; when it remains steady, little by little, everything comes to fulfillment.

niśāvaśiṣṭā nalinī himākare dūrīkṛte caṇḍakareṇa bhāsvatā sugandhapuṣpaprakaro'tisuṁdarī nāpnoti kiṁ bhṛṁgavarasya saṁgamam
The lotus that remains at the last watch of night, when the moon is driven far off by the fierce sun, still, rich in fragrant blossom and most beautiful, does she not find union with the finest of bees?
Verse 195 (padma.7.5.195)

gaṁtuṁ tasya sabhāṁ rājñaścetasā sā vyaciṁtayat mayā yuvatyā kartavyaṁ kathaṁ bhūpāladarśanam
As she went toward that king's assembly, she began to think in her mind — how would it be fitting for a young woman like myself to be seen by the king?

adhivāsanasūtrāṇi sadūrvāṇi bhuje mama kanyāhaṁ turagārūḍhā yuvatī saṁgavarjitā
The dūrvā-grass thread of my own pre-nuptial rite still binds my arm; I am a maiden, mounted on a horse, young, alone, without any companion.
Verse 199 (padma.7.5.199)
cāritraṁ māmakaṁ nūnaṁ manovismayakārakam ātmānaṁ gopayitvāhaṁ yāsyāmi nṛpateḥ sabhām
My own conduct will surely be one to fill the mind with astonishment — therefore, concealing my true self, I shall go into the king's assembly.
Verse 200 (padma.7.5.200)

By the power of illusion, O Jaimini, taking on the form of a man, she entered that king's assembly, as though entering Indra's own assembly hall, Sudharma.
Verse 201 (padma.7.5.201)
taṁ sapannamivāyāṁtaṁ śaktihastaṁ hayāsanam svayaṁ papraccha bhūpālaḥ kastvaṁ kuta ihāgataḥ

Whatever task is impossible, that alone I accomplish; while I remain, my lord shall meet defeat nowhere.
