Verse 1 (padma.7.6.1)
rājovāca- tiṣṭhātraiva mahābāho mama rājye suśobhane kartavyā te mayā vṛttiḥ saṁśayo nātra vidyate
The king said: O mighty-armed one, remain right here, in my own splendid kingdom; I myself shall provide for your livelihood, without doubt.
Verse 2 (padma.7.6.2)

Then that Viravara, O brahmin, remained continually near that king, his mind ever set upon serving him.
Verse 3 (padma.7.6.3)
athaikadā tasya pure jaimine sakalāḥ prajāḥ bhīmanādo nāma khaḍgaḥ kṣobhayāmāsa saṁtatam
O Jaimini, once in that city a demon named Bhimanada, wielding a sword, began ceaselessly to torment all the people.
Verse 4 (padma.7.6.4)
tadvadhāya tato rājā preṣayāmāsa taṁ ruṣā tato'sau gaṁḍakaṁ haṁtu yayau vīravaro janaiḥ
To slay him, the king, in fury, sent Viravara; then Viravara set out, together with attendants, to slay that Gandaka.
Verse 5 (padma.7.6.5)
dadarśa parvatākāraṁ suptaṁ taṁ dharaṇītale daṁṣṭrākarālavadanaṁ khaḍginaṁ taṁ saśaktidhṛk
He saw him lying asleep upon the earth, mountain-like, his face fearsome with fangs, bearing sword and spear.
Verse 6 (padma.7.6.6)
nabhasi bhrāmayansaptiṁ sa ca vīravaro ruṣā khaḍginaṁ tamiti prāha meghagaṁbhīrayā girā
Wheeling his horse about in the sky, that Viravara, in fury, in a voice deep as thunder, spoke thus to that sword-bearer.
Verse 7 (padma.7.6.7)
upārjitāstvayā ye ye durātmanpāpapādapāḥ babhūvuḥ phalinaste te ṛtuṁ prāpya yathā drumāḥ
O wicked one, whatever trees of sin you have planted have now, like trees reaching their season, all come to fruit.
Verse 8 (padma.7.6.8)
khāditāḥ prāṇino ye ye rājye'sminpāpinā tvayā yamālaye samastaistairdarśanaṁ te bhaviṣyati
O sinful one, whatever beings you have devoured in this kingdom, all of them you shall now behold in the abode of Yama.
Verse 9 (padma.7.6.9)
muṁca nidrāmare duṣṭa māṁ paśyāntakaraṁ nijam anayā nidrayā kinte mahānidra bhaviṣyati
O wicked foe, abandon your sleep; behold your own destroyer; after this sleep what a great slumber now awaits you!
Verse 10 (padma.7.6.10)
tataḥ so'pi samuttasthau krodhasaṁraktalocanaḥ dhūlidhūsarasarvāṅgastyaktanidro mahābalaḥ
Then he too rose up, his eyes red with rage, his every limb grey with dust, casting off sleep, that man of great might.
Verse 11 (padma.7.6.11)
bhīmanāda uvāca- garvaṁ mā kuru durbuddhe tavāyuḥ śeṣatāṁ gatam tatsaṁdarśanamātreṇa prāptaḥ konu vimucyate
Bhimanada said: O foolish one, do not boast; your life has run its course; who has ever been released, merely by beholding me?
Verse 12 (padma.7.6.12)
jvaladagniśikhāśreṇīṁ praviśecchalabho yathā matkopānalarāśau tvaṁ tathaiva nipatiṣyasi
As a moth enters the rows of blazing flames, so too you shall fall into the mass of fire that is my own fury.
Verse 13 (padma.7.6.13)
iti bruvaṁtaṁ taṁ draṣṭuṁ śaktyā niśitayā tayā sa jajvāla mahākopātkṛtvā huṁkāraniḥsvanam
Seeing him speak thus, with that keen spear, he blazed with great fury and let out a terrible roar.
Verse 14 (padma.7.6.14)
sa papāta mahīpṛṣṭhe gatāyurgaṁḍakastataḥ cālayanpṛthivīṁ sarvāṁ svanitaugha pariplutaḥ
Then that Gandaka, his life spent, fell upon the ground, shaking the entire earth with the sound of his own fall.
Verse 15 (padma.7.6.15)
khaḍginaṁ patitaṁ dṛṣṭvā gaṅgābdhirodhasi dvija samīpaṁ tasya bhūpasya sa gaṁtumupacakrame
O brahmin, seeing that sword-bearer fallen, he set out toward the shore of the Ganga and the sea, to go to that king's presence.
Verse 16 (padma.7.6.16)
sa gacchanpathiviprarṣe dadarśaikaṁ mahāśayam jājvalyamānaṁ tejobhirdvitīyamiva bhāskaram
Going along the way, O sage among brahmins, he saw a great being, blazing with his own radiance like a second sun,
Verse 17 (padma.7.6.17)
viṣṇudūtagaṇairyuktaṁ tulasīmālyabhūṣitam divyāmbaradharaṁ divyaṁ rathārūḍhaṁ smitānanam
surrounded by the messengers of Vishnu, adorned with a garland of tulasi, wearing celestial garments, divine, mounted on a chariot, his face smiling.
Verse 18 (padma.7.6.18)
papraccheti tato bhaktyā sa ca vīravaraśca tam kastvaṁ kuta ihāyātaḥ kva gacchasi vadasva naḥ
Then that Viravara, with devotion, asked him thus — who are you, whence have you come here, where are you going? Tell us.
Verse 19 (padma.7.6.19)
puruṣa uvāca- kanyevidhṛtapuṁveśe madvṛttāṁtaṁ niśāmaya kathayāmi samāsena śrotumicchasi cenmudā
That being said: O maiden, wearing the guise of a man, listen, I shall tell you my own story; I speak it briefly — hear it gladly if you wish.
Verse 20 (padma.7.6.20)
ahamāsaṁ purā rājā cauravaṁśavanānalaḥ dharmabuddhiriti khyātaḥ sarvadharmaparāyaṇaḥ
Long ago I was a king, like forest-fire to the race of thieves, renowned by the name Dharmabuddhi, given wholly to righteousness.
Verse 21 (padma.7.6.21)
mayā yajñāḥ kṛtāḥ sarve dānāni sakalāni ca caturvarṣasahasrāṇi pālitā ca vasundharā
I performed every sacrifice, gave every kind of gift, and for four thousand years protected the earth.
Verse 22 (padma.7.6.22)
pākhaṇḍajanavākyena mayā bhūmirdvijanmanaḥ laṁghitā kopamāsādya doṣitā na hi kutracit
By the words of hypocrites, falling into anger, I violated a brahmin's land — even though he had committed no fault anywhere.
Verse 23 (padma.7.6.23)
mayā tenāparādhena svayameva vidhistataḥ jahāra tatkṣaṇādeva sarvāṁ rājaśriyaṁ ruṣā
For that offense, fate itself, in that very instant, in wrath, took away my entire royal fortune.
Verse 24 (padma.7.6.24)
athāhaṁ gatasaṁpattiḥ śokāgnidagdhamānasaḥ kiyidbhirdivasaiḥ sādhvi yamarājavaśaṁ gataḥ
Then, bereft of prosperity, my mind burning with the fire of grief, O virtuous one, in just a few days I fell under the sway of Yama.
Verse 25 (padma.7.6.25)
māṁ dṛṣṭvā citraguptena tatkarmaprakaṭīkṛtam uktaśca bhāskarirdevaścāruhāsagatiḥ prabhuḥ
Seeing me, Chitragupta made known my deeds, and it was said thus to the son of the Sun, that lord of gracious smile and bearing.
Verse 26 (padma.7.6.26)
dharmabuddhirayaṁ rājā kṛtapuṇyakriyaḥ sadā astyasya duritaṁ kiñcittanniśāmaya vacmyaham
This king Dharmabuddhi has ever performed meritorious deeds; some slight fault alone is his — hear it, I shall tell.
Verse 27 (padma.7.6.27)
pākhaṇḍairbodhito'yaṁ tu jahāra dvijaśāsanam tenaiva karmaṇā sthānaṁ narake cāsyaduttare
Instigated by hypocrites, he seized a brahmin's land; by that very deed a place in hell awaits him — such was the answer given.
Verse 28 (padma.7.6.28)
vṛtticchedaḥ sūryaputra yasya yena vidhīyate sa tasya vadhamāpnoti śāstreṣu iti niścitam
O son of the Sun, whoever's livelihood is destroyed by another — that other becomes a partaker of his very slaying; this is settled in the scriptures.
Verse 29 (padma.7.6.29)
tasmādayaṁ pāpakarmā brahmahā pṛthivīpatiḥ etasya niraye sthānaṁ kalpakoṭiśatāvadhi
Therefore this sinful king is a partaker in the sin of killing a brahmin; his place in hell shall last for hundreds of millions of kalpas.
Verse 30 (padma.7.6.30)
ātmadattāṁ haredyastu paradattāṁ ca medinīm sa koṭikulasaṁyuktaḥ prayāti narakaṁ vibho
Whoever seizes land given by himself or given by another goes to hell together with ten million of his own kin, O lord.
Verse 31 (padma.7.6.31)
yo harecca mahīṁ tāvaddevasya brāhmaṇasya ca na tasya niṣkṛtirdṛṣṭā kalpakoṭiśatāvadhi
Whoever seizes land belonging to a god or to a brahmin — no deliverance for him has ever been seen, for hundreds of millions of kalpas.
Verse 32 (padma.7.6.32)
paradattāṁ kṣitiṁ yastu rakṣituryastu rakṣati sa koṭiguṇamāpnoti puṇyaṁ dātṛguṇādapi
Whoever protects land given by another, just as the giver himself would, attains merit ten million times greater than even the giver's own.
Verse 33 (padma.7.6.33)
tato'haṁ śamanādeśādbhuktvā vai pūtimṛttikām kalpayonau prāṇihiṁsā sarvadaiva mayā kṛtā
Then, by Yama's command, eating putrid earth, in a kalpa's span of births, I ceaselessly committed violence against living beings.
Verse 34 (padma.7.6.34)
gāvaśca brāhmaṇāścaiva tathaivānye'pi jīvinaḥ mayā duṣṭena nihatāḥ koṭikoṭisahasraśaḥ
Cows, brahmins, and countless other beings besides were, by me, in my wickedness, slain by the tens of millions.
Verse 35 (padma.7.6.35)
kālena preritā sādhvi māṁ sarvakṣayitāśrayam khaḍgayoniṁ samutpannaṁ bhavatī prajaghāna ha
O virtuous one, then, driven by time, born into the form of a sword-wielding demon, the very refuge of all destruction, I was slain by you.
Verse 36 (padma.7.6.36)
gaṅgābdhisaṅgamaṁ tīrthaṁ durllabhaṁ daivatairapi sthale'pi mṛtyumāsādya yatreyaṁ mama sadgatiḥ
The confluence of the Ganga and the sea is a sacred ford hard to attain even for the gods; meeting death there, even on dry land, I have attained this happy state.
Verse 37 (padma.7.6.37)
O fair-hipped one, go — good fortune shall be yours, without doubt; before long you shall be reunited with your husband.
Verse 38 (padma.7.6.38)
vyāsa uvāca- tasyaitadvacanaṁ śrutvā sā kanyā paramādbhutam vavaṁde caraṇau tasya dharmabuddhirmahīpatiḥ
Vyasa said: hearing his most wondrous words, that maiden bowed at the two feet of king Dharmabuddhi.
Verse 39 (padma.7.6.39)
tato rathaṁ samāruhya sa rājā tridivaṁ yayau so'pi vīravaro vipra jagāma nṛpateḥ sabhām
Then that king, mounting the chariot, departed to heaven. That Viravara too, O brahmin, went toward the king's assembly.
Verse 40 (padma.7.6.40)
rājā ca taṁ mṛtaṁ śrutvā khaḍginaṁ bhīmavikramam tasyai dadau vivāhena jayaṁtīṁ nijakanyakām
And the king, hearing that the sword-bearing demon of terrible valor had been slain, gave him in marriage his own daughter Jayanti.
Verse 41 (padma.7.6.41)

jayaṁtīṁ tāṁ samādāya sā kanyā puruṣākṛtiḥ tapastaptuṁ manaścakre gaṅgāsāgarasaṅgame
Taking Jayanti with her, that maiden in the guise of a man resolved to go to the confluence of the Ganga and the sea and there practice austerity.

Bathing at the confluence of the Ganga and the sea, O best of the twice-born, in the morning she would worship Lord Narayana with songs, instruments, and dance.
Verse 43 (padma.7.6.43)
nirāmiṣaṁ haviṣyaṁ ca phalāhāraṁ dvijottama kadācidupavāsaṁ sā kurute ca varāṅganā
O best of the twice-born, that beauty lived on flesh-free sacred food and fruit, and at times observed fasts as well.
Verse 44 (padma.7.6.44)

"Seeing me alone, who has laid hold of me, thinking me lowly upon this earth?" — thinking thus, mounting the horse,
Verse 45 (padma.7.6.45)
bhūya eva nijaṁ rājyaṁ sājagāma varāṅganā mādhavasya viyogena tasya vidyādharasya vā
that beauty returned once more to her own kingdom. On account of separation from Madhava or from that Vidyadhara,
Verse 46 (padma.7.6.46)
mṛtā sā rājatanayā yato'nyaṁ na bhajatyapi tasyāṁ mṛtāyāṁ bhṛtyo'sau nirjagāma yadṛcchayā
"That princess must be dead, since she will accept none other" — thinking her dead, that servant Pracesta, of his own accord, went away from there.
Verse 47 (padma.7.6.47)
vilapya bahudhā tatra praceṣṭo'tyaṁta śokabhāk jagāma maraṇārthāya gaṅgāsāgarasaṅgamam
Lamenting greatly there, that Pracesta, overwhelmed with grief, went toward the confluence of the Ganga and the sea, intending to die.

pavitre tvajjale mātastyajāmyatra kalevaram sulocanā me kāṁtāsyādyathātattvaṁ kariṣyasi
O mother, in this pure, sacred water of yours I now cast off my body; if Sulochana should again become my beloved, grant it so.
Verse 50 (padma.7.6.50)
bhūyobhūyo bruvaṁtaṁ tamiti tasyāśca kiṁkarāḥ badhvā pāśena taṁ ninyurniruktāṁ tatsabhāṁ prati
O brahmin, seeing him speak thus again and again, her (Viravara's) own attendants bound him with a noose and began leading him toward that same unnamed assembly.
Verse 51 (padma.7.6.51)
taptā vīravarādeśātkiṁkarāste sudāruṇāḥ kārāyāṁ sthāpayāmāsuḥ praceṣṭamanuvihvalam
At Viravara's command, those most severe servants, now enraged, cast the distraught Pracesta into a prison.

Bowmen with quivers, warriors mounted on chariots, shield-bearers, sword-bearers, archers, and spear-bearers, in the tens of millions,
Verse 55 (padma.7.6.55)
sthāne sthāne pure tasminrājā vai śokavihvalaḥ niyojayāmāsa tadā rakṣāyai dvijasattama
O best of the twice-born, that king, distressed with grief, stationed, at every place in that city, for the sake of protection.
Verse 56 (padma.7.6.56)
tenājñaptāstataḥ sarve yoddhāro'mitavikramāḥ satvarāḥ patirakṣāsu tasthustasminpure ruṣā
By his command, all those warriors of measureless valor, in wrath, swiftly took up the task of protection and remained stationed in that city.
Verse 57 (padma.7.6.57)
gītāni gāyakaiḥ sarvairnṛtyāni nartakaistathā vādyāni vādakaiścaiva tatra tyaktāni sādhvasaiḥ
All the singers ceased their songs, the dancers ceased their dance, and the musicians, out of dread, ceased playing their instruments.
Verse 58 (padma.7.6.58)
tataḥ sa rājā viprarṣe samāhūya svamaṁtriṇaḥ kimetaditi papraccha śokopahatamānasaḥ
O sage among brahmins, then that king, summoning his ministers, his mind stricken with grief, began to ask — what has happened here?
Verse 59 (padma.7.6.59)
maṁtriṇa ūcuḥ- devādbhutamidaṁ karma na dṛṣṭaṁ na śrutaṁ kvacit etāvatāṁ nṛṇāṁ madhye paśyatāṁ kva jagāma sā
The ministers said: O lord, this wondrous event has never been seen or heard anywhere. Where has she gone, right before the eyes of so many people?
Verse 60 (padma.7.6.60)
ko'pi jalpati sā lakṣmīḥ śāpenāgatya bhūtale tvadīyaṁ saudhametarhi svayamaṁtaradhīyata
Some say — she was Lakshmi herself, come to earth under a curse, and just now vanished of her own accord from your very palace.
Verse 61 (padma.7.6.61)
māyāmayī sā ramaṇī māyayā tvadgṛhe sthitā māyāṁ svakīyāṁ darśitvā gatetyanye vadaṁti vai
Others say — that woman was illusory, dwelling in your house by her own power of illusion, and having shown her own maya, has now departed.
Verse 62 (padma.7.6.62)
kecidvadaṁti ramaṇī sarvalakṣaṇasaṁyutā āgamiṣyati bhūyo'pi bhagāṅgo maghavā yataḥ
Some say — that woman, endowed with every auspicious mark, will return again, since Indra (Maghava) is fortunate,
Verse 63 (padma.7.6.63)
tanmukhaṁcandravanmatvā viciṁtyātmānamātmanā kecidvadaṁti candreṇa nītā supratipattaye
deeming her face like the moon and reckoning himself her equal — some say it was the moon itself that took her, for its own good fortune.
Verse 64 (padma.7.6.64)
vadaṁti ke'pi sā kanyā sadguṇā dīrghavāsanā bhrāntyā candramasā grastā pūrṇacaṁdranibhānanā
Some say — that maiden, virtuous and of lasting desire, was seized in error by the moon, mistaken for the moon itself, because of her moon-like face.
Verse 65 (padma.7.6.65)
diggajairnalinī bhrāntyā praphullakamalānanā viṣadaṇḍaprahastā ca nīrajā kalikākucā
As the elephants of the directions, in error, might carry off a lotus-plant of the water — its face a full-blown lotus, its breasts like buds, its stalk a serpent's rod held in hand.
Verse 66 (padma.7.6.66)
kecidvadaṁti sṛṣṭvā sā sraṣṭumanyāṁ striyaṁ nṛpaṁ tadrūpādarśanālokye nītā rūpaguṇāsthitā
Some say — the Creator, having fashioned her, summoned her back to fashion another woman in her likeness; to behold her form, established in beauty and virtue, she was taken there.
Verse 67 (padma.7.6.67)
kecidvadaṁti bhūpāla tvayā sarvadiśo jitāḥ rūpairdaivāṁganā jetuṁ gatā sā tridivaṁ prati
Some say — O king, when you conquered every direction, then, to rival her in beauty, that celestial nymph departed to heaven.
Verse 68 (padma.7.6.68)
atha te maṁtriṇo'nyonyamālokyeti mukhaśriyaḥ stabdhā ivābhavansarve nirutsāhāḥ sasādhvasāḥ
Then those ministers, looking upon the splendor of one another's faces, all became as though stunned, devoid of courage, and struck with fear.
Verse 69 (padma.7.6.69)
bhūpaḥ sulocane putri kva gatāsi vihāya mām ityuktvā sa mahīpālaḥ pṛthivyāṁ mūrcchito'patat
The king said: O daughter Sulochana, where have you gone, forsaking me? — having said this, that king fell fainting to the ground.
Verse 70 (padma.7.6.70)
rājānaṁ patitaṁ dṛṣṭvā śokena mahatā tataḥ jajñe hāhāravastasminnagare dvijasattama
O best of the twice-born, seeing the king fallen, then in that city there arose a great outcry of grief.
Verse 71 (padma.7.6.71)
tatkraṁdanadhvaniṁ vipra pratiśrutvā ca jāyate utprekṣate tatra loke kraṁdaṁti kakubho daśa
O brahmin, hearing the sound of that lament, it seemed to those who heard it, in that place, as though all ten directions themselves were weeping.
Verse 72 (padma.7.6.72)
dhūlidhūsaratāṁ gaṁtuṁ nṛpatiṁ muktakeśakam vidhṛtya maṁtriṇaḥ sarve tarasā saudhamāyayuḥ
Grey with dust, his hair undone, the king was lifted up and swiftly brought by all the ministers into the palace.
Verse 73 (padma.7.6.73)
atha vidyādharastatra śrīvikramadevajaḥ tasyāḥ pīṭhaṁ samāliṅgya ruroda karuṇasvanaiḥ
Then there, the son of Sri Vikramadeva, that Vidyadhara, embracing her very seat, wept aloud with piteous sound.
Verse 74 (padma.7.6.74)
hā priye caṁcalāpāṅgi suvarṇakusumaprabhe śokābdhau pātayitvā māṁ kva gatāsi varānane
Alas, beloved! O restless-eyed one, O one radiant as a golden flower! Casting me into an ocean of grief, where have you gone, O fair one?
Verse 75 (padma.7.6.75)
mama kiṁ dūṣaṇaṁ dṛṣṭaṁ tvayā nirdoṣayā priye na dadāsi kathaṁ bhadre darśanaṁ kamalānane
O beloved, what fault, without fault yourself, have you found in me? O gentle one, O lotus-faced one, why do you not grant me your sight?
Verse 76 (padma.7.6.76)
na jīviṣyāmyaṁhaṁ bhadre kṣaṇamātraṁ tvayā vinā ato me darśanaṁ datvā kriyatāṁ prāṇarakṣaṇam
O gentle one, without you I shall not live even a moment; therefore, granting me your sight, save my very life.
Verse 77 (padma.7.6.77)
kiṁ dhanaiḥ kiṁ janaiḥ kiṁ me mitraiḥ kiṁ vā dhanairgṛhaiḥ nāpnomi yadi bhadre tvāṁ prāṇebhyo'pi garīyasīm
What use to me is wealth, or people, or friends, or wealth and homes, if I do not attain you, O gentle one, dearer to me than life itself?
Verse 78 (padma.7.6.78)
etaccānyacca viprarṣe sa kṛtvā karuṇaṁ mahat śokānmṛtyuṁ viniściṁtya yayau gaṅgābdhisaṅgamam
O sage among brahmins, having spoken this and much else with the greatest anguish, he, resolved on death out of grief, went toward the confluence of the Ganga and the sea.
Verse 79 (padma.7.6.79)
tatra gaṅgāmbhasi snātvā samudrajalamiśrite nivedya bhāskarāyārghaṁ gaṁgāṁ natvāha mātaram
There, bathing in the Ganga's water mingled with the sea, offering libation to the sun, and bowing to Mother Ganga, he spoke thus.
Verse 80 (padma.7.6.80)
gaṁṅge devi jaganmātastvajjale vimale tanum tyajāmi tāṁ yathā bhūyaḥ prāpnomi tatkariṣyasi
O Ganga, O goddess, O mother of the universe, I cast off this body in your pure water; grant that I may attain her once again.
Verse 81 (padma.7.6.81)
iti bruvaṁtaṁ taṁ vipra tatkiṁkaravarāstataḥ vidhiṁ vininyuḥ sadṛśaṁ kruddhā vīravarasya ca
O brahmin, hearing him speak thus, the foremost servants of that Viravara, in wrath, bound him in fitting restraint.
Verse 82 (padma.7.6.82)
tato vīravaraḥ prāha kastvaṁ bhoḥ kuta āgataḥ kathamatra tanutyāgaṁ kuruṣe tadvadasva me
Then Viravara asked — who are you, whence have you come? Why do you undertake to cast off your body in this way? Tell me this.
Verse 83 (padma.7.6.83)
tadvākyametadākarṇya tato vidyādharo'khilām tāṁ kathāṁ kathayāmāsa śṛṇvatāṁ vismayapradām
Hearing his words, that Vidyadhara began to tell that entire story, a wonder to all who heard it.
Verse 84 (padma.7.6.84)
atha tvaṁ mūrkhalokānāṁ pravarosi na saṁśayaḥ gāndharvī rākṣasī vāpi pannagī vāpi kinnarī
"You too are, without doubt, the foremost of fools — whether she was a Gandharva woman, or a rakshasi, or a serpent-woman, or a Kinnari,
Verse 85 (padma.7.6.85)
śāpāgateva sā kanyā tasmādantarhitā svayam sā devarūpiṇī kanyā devānāṁ nilayaṁ gatā
that maiden, seized by a curse, vanished of her own accord; that maiden of divine form has gone to the abode of the gods.
Verse 86 (padma.7.6.86)
kathaṁ tayā samaṁ bhūyo darśanaṁ te bhaviṣyati cakorapeyaṁ pīyūṣaṁ gagane rohiṇīpateḥ
Now how shall you ever meet her again? The nectar of the moon, stationed in the sky, only the chakora bird can drink —
Verse 87 (padma.7.6.87)
kiṁ śaknuvaṁti taṁ pāpā vāyasā balino'pi ca yadaprāpyaṁ na tatprāpyaṁ prāpyaṁ yattacca labhyate
can even mighty but wicked crows attain it? What is unattainable is not attained; what is attainable, that alone is attained —
Verse 88 (padma.7.6.88)
jānaṁti tajjanaṁ kaścinmohaṁ prati na gacchati kenāpi dīyate kanyā kanyā kenāpi gṛhyate
whoever knows this never falls into delusion. By one man a maiden is given, by another a maiden is taken —
Verse 89 (padma.7.6.89)
pūrvajanmani yā kanyā tāṁ kanyāṁ labhate patiḥ putraprayojanā bhāryā putrāḥ piṇḍaprayojanāḥ
whatever maiden was one's own in a former birth, that same maiden the husband attains in this. A wife is the means to a son, sons are the means to the offering of the ancestral rite,
Verse 90 (padma.7.6.90)
kurvaṁti dāragrahaṇamataeva manīṣiṇaḥ yatheha dīyate nāryā tathā nārī samaśnute
and it is for this that the wise take a wife. Just as here a woman is given, so too a woman is attained.
Verse 91 (padma.7.6.91)
kraṁdanrajanyāmapyeṣa bhṛṅgaḥ kumudinīṁ sahet sadrūpo'pi patiḥ strīṇāṁ saṁtoṣāya bhavennahi
This bee, weeping even through the night, endures only the night-lotus; even a husband of handsome form is not enough to bring women contentment.
Verse 92 (padma.7.6.92)
ravau sthite'pi padminyā madhūni bhramaraḥ pibet nārīṣu satataṁ cittaṁ viṣṇubhaktiṣvanādaraḥ
Even with the sun risen, the bee still drinks the honey of the lotus; a mind ever attached to women, and contempt for devotion to Vishnu —
Verse 93 (padma.7.6.93)
śokaiḥ kaiścittanutyāgastisraḥ puṁsāṁ viḍaṁbanāḥ dārāḥ putrāstathā bhrātā deśāśca bāṁdhavāstathā
casting off the body over one grief or another — these are, for men, three kinds of self-deceit. Wife, sons, brother, homeland, and kinsfolk —
Verse 94 (padma.7.6.94)
punarlabhyā ime sarve punarlabhyā na cāsavaḥ na mukto viṣayo dharmo na ca karma kṛtaṁ tvayā
all these can be regained, but life, once lost, is not regained; you have neither renounced any object of enjoyment, nor performed any deed of dharma.
Verse 95 (padma.7.6.95)
vartamāne gate mūḍha bhaviṣyaṁ janma durllabham mama mātā mama pitā bhāryā bhrātā dhanaṁ mama
O fool, what is possible in this present birth becomes hard to attain in a future birth. My mother, my father, my wife, my brother, my wealth —
Verse 96 (padma.7.6.96)
niṣphalaṁ yāti vai janma nṛṇāṁ mamatayā tayā evaṁ prabodhitaḥ samyaktena dhīravareṇa saḥ
on account of such attachment, men's very births go to waste, unfulfilled. Thus well instructed by that foremost of the steadfast, he,
Verse 97 (padma.7.6.97)
daurmanasyaṁ parityajya tasthau tatraiva jaimine tatastu gandhinī prītyā hasaṁtī svagṛhaṁ gatā
O Jaimini, abandoning his despondency, remained there. Then that Gandhini, laughing with delight, went to her own home.
Verse 98 (padma.7.6.98)
gatvā ca mādhavaṁ maṁce svapaṁtaṁ sā dadarśa ha gandhinyuvāca- uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha durbuddhe bhramaste viphalo'bhavat
Going there, she saw Madhava asleep on the couch. Gandhini said: get up, get up, O foolish one! Your whole wandering has come to nothing.
Verse 99 (padma.7.6.99)
vivāhakāle sā kanyā babhūvāṁtarhitā svayam evaṁ tasyā vacaḥ śrutvā samuttasthau sa mādhavaḥ
At the very time of the wedding, that maiden vanished of her own accord. Hearing her words, Madhava at once rose up,
Verse 100 (padma.7.6.100)
vilalāpākulaḥ śokairmahadbhiḥ kṣmātale luṭhan kanyāyā dūṣaṇaṁ nāsti nāsti vidyādharasya vā
and, overcome with great grief, rolling upon the ground, began to lament — the fault in this lies neither with that maiden, nor with that Vidyadhara.
