The Meeting of the Gods and the Mountain

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.105.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । अथाकर्ण्य गिरीशश्च निजपुर्युपकण्ठतः । प्राप्तमीशं सर्वगं वै मुमुदेऽति हिमालयः

brahmovāca athākarṇya girīśaśca nijapuryupakaṇṭhataḥ prāptamīśaṁ sarvagaṁ vai mumude'ti himālayaḥ

Brahma said: "Then, hearing that Girisha, the all-pervading Lord, had arrived close to his own city, Himalaya rejoiced exceedingly."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.105.2)

अथ सम्भृतसम्भारः सम्भाषां कर्तुमीश्वरम् । शैलान्प्रस्थापयामास ब्राह्मणानपि सर्वशः

atha sambhṛtasambhāraḥ sambhāṣāṁ kartumīśvaram śailānprasthāpayāmāsa brāhmaṇānapi sarvaśaḥ

"Then, having gathered all provisions, he sent forth the mountains, and brahmins too, in every direction, to greet and converse with the Lord."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.105.3)

स्वयं जगाम सद्भक्त्या प्राणेप्सुं द्रष्टुमीश्वरम् । भक्त्युद्रुतमनाः शैलः प्रशंसन् स्वविधिं मुदा

svayaṁ jagāma sadbhaktyā prāṇepsuṁ draṣṭumīśvaram bhaktyudrutamanāḥ śailaḥ praśaṁsan svavidhiṁ mudā

"He himself went, with true devotion, eager as for his very life to see the Lord; the mountain, his mind overflowing with devotion, joyfully praising his own good fortune."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.105.4)

देवसेनां तदा दृष्ट्वा हिमवान्विस्मयं गतः । जगाम सम्मुखस्तत्र धन्योऽहमिति चिन्तयन्

devasenāṁ tadā dṛṣṭvā himavānvismayaṁ gataḥ jagāma sammukhastatra dhanyo'hamiti cintayan

"Seeing then the army of the gods, Himavan was filled with wonder; he went forward to meet them there, thinking, 'I am indeed blessed.'"

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.105.5)

देवा हि तद्बलं दृष्ट्वा विस्मयं परमं गताः । आनन्दं परमं प्रापुर्देवाश्च गिरयस्तथा

devā hi tadbalaṁ dṛṣṭvā vismayaṁ paramaṁ gatāḥ ānandaṁ paramaṁ prāpurdevāśca girayastathā

"The gods too, seeing that host, were filled with the greatest wonder; both the gods and the mountains attained supreme joy."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.105.6)

पर्वतानां महासेना देवानां च तथा मुने । मिलित्वा विरराजेव पूर्वपश्चिमसागरौ

parvatānāṁ mahāsenā devānāṁ ca tathā mune militvā virarājeva pūrvapaścimasāgarau

"The great army of the mountains and that of the gods, O sage, meeting together, shone forth like the eastern and western oceans joined as one."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.105.7)

परस्परं मिलित्वा ते देवाश्च पर्वतास्तथा । कृतकृत्यं तथात्मानं मेनिरे परया मुदा

parasparaṁ militvā te devāśca parvatāstathā kṛtakṛtyaṁ tathātmānaṁ menire parayā mudā

"Meeting one another, the gods and the mountains alike, with the greatest joy, each considered himself to have fulfilled his purpose."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.105.8)

अथेश्वरं पुरो दृष्ट्वा प्रणनाम हिमालयः । सर्वे प्रणेमुर्गिरयो ब्राह्मणाश्च सदाशिवम्

atheśvaraṁ puro dṛṣṭvā praṇanāma himālayaḥ sarve praṇemurgirayo brāhmaṇāśca sadāśivam

"Then, seeing the Lord before him, Himalaya bowed down; all the mountains and the brahmins too bowed to Sadashiva."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.105.9)

वृषभस्थं प्रसन्नास्यं नानाभरणभूषितम् । दिव्यावयवलावण्यप्रकाशितदिगन्तरम्

vṛṣabhasthaṁ prasannāsyaṁ nānābharaṇabhūṣitam divyāvayavalāvaṇyaprakāśitadigantaram

They beheld him seated on his bull, his face serene, adorned with manifold ornaments, the beauty of his divine limbs illuminating every quarter of the sky.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.105.10)

सुसूक्ष्माहतसत्पट्टवस्त्रशोभितविग्रहम् । सद्रत्नविलसन्मौलिं विहसन्तं शुचिप्रभम्

susūkṣmāhatasatpaṭṭavastraśobhitavigraham sadratnavilasanmauliṁ vihasantaṁ śuciprabham

His form beautified with fine, delicately woven silken garments, his crown gleaming with excellent jewels, smiling, radiant with pure splendor.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.105.11)

भूषाभूताहियुक्ताङ्गमद्भुतावयवप्रभम् । दिव्यद्युतिं सुरेशैश्च सेवितं करचामरैः

bhūṣābhūtāhiyuktāṅgamadbhutāvayavaprabham divyadyutiṁ sureśaiśca sevitaṁ karacāmaraiḥ

His limbs adorned with serpent ornaments, the splendor of his wondrous form, of divine radiance, attended by the lords of the gods waving chowries in their hands.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.105.12)

वामस्थिताच्युतं दक्षभागस्थितविधिं प्रभुम् । पृष्ठस्थितहरिं पृष्ठपार्श्वस्थितसुरादिकम्

vāmasthitācyutaṁ dakṣabhāgasthitavidhiṁ prabhum pṛṣṭhasthitahariṁ pṛṣṭhapārśvasthitasurādikam

Achyuta (Vishnu) stood on his left, and Vidhi (Brahma) the Lord stood on his right; Hari stood behind him, and the other gods stood at his sides and to the rear.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.105.13)

नानाविधसुराद्यैश्च संस्तुतं लोकशङ्करम् । स्वहेत्वात्ततनुं ब्रह्म सर्वेशं वरदायकम्

nānāvidhasurādyaiśca saṁstutaṁ lokaśaṅkaram svahetvāttatanuṁ brahma sarveśaṁ varadāyakam

Praised by gods and others of many kinds, the benefactor of the world, whose own form is the very cause of all, Brahman itself, the lord of all, the giver of boons.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.105.14)

सगुणं निर्गुणं चापि भक्ताधीनं कृपाकरम् । प्रकृतेः पुरुषस्यापि परं सच्चित्सुखात्मकम्

saguṇaṁ nirguṇaṁ cāpi bhaktādhīnaṁ kṛpākaram prakṛteḥ puruṣasyāpi paraṁ saccitsukhātmakam

With attributes, and yet without attributes; subject to his devotees, the doer of grace; beyond both Prakriti and Purusha, of the very nature of being, consciousness, and bliss.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.105.15)

प्रभोर्दक्षिणभागे तु ददर्श हरिमच्युतम् । विनतातनयारूढं नानाभूषणभूषितम्

prabhordakṣiṇabhāge tu dadarśa harimacyutam vinatātanayārūḍhaṁ nānābhūṣaṇabhūṣitam

On the right side of the Lord, he beheld Hari, the Unfallen (Vishnu), mounted on the son of Vinata (Garuda), adorned with manifold ornaments.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.105.16)

प्रभोश्च वामभागे तु मुने मां सन्ददर्श ह । चतुर्मुखं महाशोभं स्वपरीवारसंयुतम्

prabhośca vāmabhāge tu mune māṁ sandadarśa ha caturmukhaṁ mahāśobhaṁ svaparīvārasaṁyutam

And on the left side of the Lord, O sage, he beheld me indeed — four-faced, of great splendor, accompanied by my own retinue.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.105.17)

एतौ सुरेश्वरौ दृष्ट्वा शिवस्यातिप्रियौ सदा । प्रणनाम गिरीशश्च सपरीवार आदरात्

etau sureśvarau dṛṣṭvā śivasyātipriyau sadā praṇanāma girīśaśca saparīvāra ādarāt

Seeing these two lords of the gods, ever most dear to Shiva, the mountain-lord bowed down with reverence, together with his retinue.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.105.18)

तथा शिवस्य पृष्ठे च पार्श्वयोः सुविराजितान् । देवादीन्प्रणनामासौ दृष्ट्वा गिरिवरेश्वरः

tathā śivasya pṛṣṭhe ca pārśvayoḥ suvirājitān devādīnpraṇanāmāsau dṛṣṭvā girivareśvaraḥ

Likewise, seeing the gods and others shining gloriously behind Shiva and at his sides, that lord of the best of mountains bowed to them as well.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.105.19)

शिवाज्ञया पुरो भूत्वा जगाम स्वपुरं गिरिः । शेषहर्यात्मभूः शीघ्रं मुनिभिर्निर्जरादिभिः

śivājñayā puro bhūtvā jagāma svapuraṁ giriḥ śeṣaharyātmabhūḥ śīghraṁ munibhirnirjarādibhiḥ

By Shiva's command, going in front, the mountain hastened toward his own city, together with Hari, the Self-Born (Brahma), and the rest, along with the sages and the gods.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.105.20)

सर्वे मुनिसुराद्याश्च गच्छन्तः प्रभुणा सह । गिरेः पुरं समुदिताः शशंसुर्बहु नारद

sarve munisurādyāśca gacchantaḥ prabhuṇā saha gireḥ puraṁ samuditāḥ śaśaṁsurbahu nārada

All the sages, gods, and others, going together with the Lord, joyously praised much, O Narada, the mountain's city as they went.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.105.21)

रचिते शिखरे रम्ये संस्थाप्य देवतादिकम् । जगाम हिमवाँस्तत्र यत्रास्ति विधिवेदिका

racite śikhare ramye saṁsthāpya devatādikam jagāma himavā~statra yatrāsti vidhivedikā

Having seated the gods and others upon the beautifully prepared peak, Himavan went there where the ritual altar stood.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.105.22)

कारयित्वा विशेषेण चतुष्कं तोरणैर्युतम् । स्नानदानादिकं कृत्वा परीक्षामकरोत्तदा

kārayitvā viśeṣeṇa catuṣkaṁ toraṇairyutam snānadānādikaṁ kṛtvā parīkṣāmakarottadā

Having had a special four-sided pavilion built, fitted with festive arches, and having performed bathing, gift-giving, and other rites, he then made a final inspection.

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.105.23)

स्वपुत्रान्प्रेषयामास शिवस्य निकटे तथा । हिमो विष्ण्वादिसम्पूर्णवर्गयुक्तस्य शैलराट्

svaputrānpreṣayāmāsa śivasya nikaṭe tathā himo viṣṇvādisampūrṇavargayuktasya śailarāṭ

Himalaya, the king of mountains, then sent his own sons near to Shiva, who was accompanied by the entire host led by Vishnu.

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.105.24)

कर्तुमैच्छद्वराचारं महोत्सवपुरस्सरम् । महाहर्षयुतः सर्वबन्धुयुग्घिमशैलराट्

kartumaicchadvarācāraṁ mahotsavapurassaram mahāharṣayutaḥ sarvabandhuyugghimaśailarāṭ

The king of the snowy mountains, filled with great joy and joined by all his kinsmen, wished to perform the bridegroom's rites of welcome, preceded by a great festival.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.105.25)

अथ ते गिरिपुत्राश्च तत्र गत्वा प्रणम्य तम् । सस्ववर्गं प्रार्थनान्तामूचुः शैलेश्वरस्य वै

atha te giriputrāśca tatra gatvā praṇamya tam sasvavargaṁ prārthanāntāmūcuḥ śaileśvarasya vai

Then those sons of the mountain, having gone there and bowed to him, together with his retinue, delivered the message ending in the invitation of the lord of mountains.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.105.26)

ततस्ते स्वालयं जग्मुः शैलपुत्रास्तदाज्ञया । शैलराजाय सञ्चख्युः ते चायान्तीति हर्षिताः

tataste svālayaṁ jagmuḥ śailaputrāstadājñayā śailarājāya sañcakhyuḥ te cāyāntīti harṣitāḥ

Then, by his command, the mountain's sons went back to their own home, and joyfully reported to the king of mountains that they [Shiva and his party] were coming.

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.105.27)

अथ देवाः प्रार्थनान्तां गिरेः श्रुत्वातिहर्षिताः । मुने विष्ण्वादयः सर्वे सेश्वरा मुमुदुर्भृशम्

atha devāḥ prārthanāntāṁ gireḥ śrutvātiharṣitāḥ mune viṣṇvādayaḥ sarve seśvarā mumudurbhṛśam

Then the gods, hearing the mountain's invitation, O sage, were exceedingly delighted; all of them, headed by Vishnu, together with the Lord, rejoiced greatly.

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.105.28)

कृत्वा सुवेषं सर्वेऽपि निर्जरा मुनयो गणाः । गमनं चक्रुरन्येऽपि प्रभुणा गिरिराड्गृहम्

kṛtvā suveṣaṁ sarve'pi nirjarā munayo gaṇāḥ gamanaṁ cakruranye'pi prabhuṇā girirāḍgṛham

Having adorned themselves splendidly, all the gods, the sages, and the hosts, and others too, set out with the Lord toward the mountain-king's house.

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.105.29)

तस्मिन्नवसरे मेना द्रष्टुकामाभवच्छिवम् । प्रभोराह्वाययामास मुने त्वां मुनिसत्तमम्

tasminnavasare menā draṣṭukāmābhavacchivam prabhorāhvāyayāmāsa mune tvāṁ munisattamam

At that time, Mena became eager to see Shiva; she sent to summon you, O sage, best among sages, from the Lord's presence.

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.105.30)

अगमस्त्वं मुने तत्र प्रभुणा प्रेरितस्तदा । मनसा शिवहृद्धेतुं पूर्णं कर्तुं तमिच्छता

agamastvaṁ mune tatra prabhuṇā preritastadā manasā śivahṛddhetuṁ pūrṇaṁ kartuṁ tamicchatā

You went there, O sage, sent by the Lord, who in his mind wished to see fulfilled that purpose dear to Shiva's heart.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.105.31)

त्वां प्रणम्य मुने मेना प्राह विस्मितमानसा । द्रष्टुकामा प्रभो रूपं शङ्करस्य मदापहम्

tvāṁ praṇamya mune menā prāha vismitamānasā draṣṭukāmā prabho rūpaṁ śaṅkarasya madāpaham

Bowing to you, O sage, Mena, her mind full of wonder, said that she desired to see, O lord, the form of Shankara so ravishing it dispels all pride.
