Brahma's Account of Narada's Errand

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.104.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । ततः सम्मन्त्र्य च मिथः प्राप्याज्ञां शाङ्करीं हरिः । मुने त्वां प्रेषयामास प्रथमं कुधरालयम्

brahmovāca tataḥ sammantrya ca mithaḥ prāpyājñāṁ śāṅkarīṁ hariḥ mune tvāṁ preṣayāmāsa prathamaṁ kudharālayam

Brahma said: "Then, having taken counsel together and obtained the command of Shankari (the Goddess), Hari sent you, O sage, first of all to the abode of the mountain-lord."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.104.2)

अथ प्रणम्य सर्वेशं गतस्त्वं नारदाग्रतः । हरिणा नोदितः प्रीत्या हिमाचलगृहं प्रति

atha praṇamya sarveśaṁ gatastvaṁ nāradāgrataḥ hariṇā noditaḥ prītyā himācalagṛhaṁ prati

"Then, having bowed to the Lord of all, you, O Narada, went ahead, sent forth with affection by Hari, toward the house of Himachala."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.104.3)

त्वं मुनेऽपश्य आत्मानं गत्वा तद्व्रीडयान्वितम् । कृत्रिमं रचितं तत्र विस्मितो विश्वकर्मणा

tvaṁ mune'paśya ātmānaṁ gatvā tadvrīḍayānvitam kṛtrimaṁ racitaṁ tatra vismito viśvakarmaṇā

"Having gone there, O sage, you found yourself overcome with a kind of bashful wonder, astonished at that artificial creation wrought there by Vishwakarma."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.104.4)

श्रान्तस्त्वमात्मना तेन कृत्रिमेण महामुने । अवलोकपरः सोऽभूच्चरितं विश्वकर्मणः

śrāntastvamātmanā tena kṛtrimeṇa mahāmune avalokaparaḥ so'bhūccaritaṁ viśvakarmaṇaḥ

"Wearied within yourself by that artifice, O great sage, you became absorbed in gazing upon Vishwakarma's handiwork."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.104.5)

प्रविष्टो मण्डपं तस्य हिमाद्रे रत्नचित्रितम् । सुवर्णकलशैर्जुष्टं रम्भादिबहुशोभितम्

praviṣṭo maṇḍapaṁ tasya himādre ratnacitritam suvarṇakalaśairjuṣṭaṁ rambhādibahuśobhitam

"You entered his pavilion at Himadri, adorned with jewels, furnished with golden pitchers, and richly beautified with plantain-trees and the like."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.104.6)

सहस्रस्तम्भसंयुक्तं विचित्रं परमाद्भुतम् । वेदिकां च तथा दृष्ट्वा विस्मयं त्वं मुने ह्ययाः

sahasrastambhasaṁyuktaṁ vicitraṁ paramādbhutam vedikāṁ ca tathā dṛṣṭvā vismayaṁ tvaṁ mune hyayāḥ

"Seeing that wondrous, supremely marvelous pavilion set upon a thousand pillars, and its altar as well, you, O sage, were struck with amazement."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.104.7)

तदावोचश्च स मुने नारद त्वं नगेश्वरम् । विस्मितोऽतीव मनसि नष्टज्ञानो विमूढधीः

tadāvocaśca sa mune nārada tvaṁ nageśvaram vismito'tīva manasi naṣṭajñāno vimūḍhadhīḥ

"Then, O sage, utterly astonished in mind, your understanding lost and your wits bewildered, you spoke thus to the lord of mountains, Himalaya:"

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.104.8)

आगतास्ते किमधुना देवा विष्णुपुरोगमाः । तथा महर्षयः सर्वे सिद्धा उपसुरास्तथा

āgatāste kimadhunā devā viṣṇupurogamāḥ tathā maharṣayaḥ sarve siddhā upasurāstathā

"'Have the gods, headed by Vishnu, now arrived here, along with all the great sages, the siddhas, and the lesser gods as well?'"

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.104.9)

महादेवो वृषारूढो गणैश्च परिवारितः । आगतः किं विवाहार्थं वद तथ्यं नगेश्वर

mahādevo vṛṣārūḍho gaṇaiśca parivāritaḥ āgataḥ kiṁ vivāhārthaṁ vada tathyaṁ nageśvara

"'Has Mahadeva, mounted on his bull and surrounded by his hosts, come here for the wedding? Tell me the truth, O lord of mountains.'"

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.104.10)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्येवं वचनं श्रुत्वा तव विस्मितचेतसः । उवाच त्वां मुने तथ्यं वाक्यं स हिमवान् गिरिः

brahmovāca ityevaṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā tava vismitacetasaḥ uvāca tvāṁ mune tathyaṁ vākyaṁ sa himavān giriḥ

Brahma said: "Hearing these words of yours, whose mind was full of wonder, O sage, the mountain Himavan spoke to you these true words:"

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.104.11)

हिमवानुवाच । हे नारद महाप्राज्ञागतो नैवाधुना शिवः । विवाहार्थं च पार्वत्याः सगणः सवरातकः

himavānuvāca he nārada mahāprājñāgato naivādhunā śivaḥ vivāhārthaṁ ca pārvatyāḥ sagaṇaḥ savarātakaḥ

Himavan said: "O Narada, greatly wise one, Shiva has not yet come now, with his hosts and wedding-party, for the marriage of Parvati."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.104.12)

विश्वकर्मकृतं चित्रं विद्धि नारद सद्धिया । विस्मयं त्यज देवर्षे स्वस्थो भव शिवं स्मर

viśvakarmakṛtaṁ citraṁ viddhi nārada saddhiyā vismayaṁ tyaja devarṣe svastho bhava śivaṁ smara

"Know this marvel, O Narada, with a clear mind, to be the work of Vishwakarma. Set aside your amazement, O divine sage; be at ease, and remember Shiva."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.104.13)

भुक्त्वा विश्रम्य सुप्रीतः कृपां कृत्वा ममोपरि । मैनाकादिधरैः सार्धं गच्छ त्वं शङ्करान्तिकम्

bhuktvā viśramya suprītaḥ kṛpāṁ kṛtvā mamopari mainākādidharaiḥ sārdhaṁ gaccha tvaṁ śaṅkarāntikam

"Having eaten and rested, being well pleased, and showing your grace upon me, go now, together with Mainaka and the other mountains, into the presence of Shankara."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.104.14)

एभिस्समेतो गिरिभिर्महामते सम्प्रार्थ्य शीघ्रं शिवमत्र चानय । देवैः समेतं च महर्षिसङ्घैः सुरासुरैरर्चितपादपल्लवम्

ebhissameto giribhirmahāmate samprārthya śīghraṁ śivamatra cānaya devaiḥ sametaṁ ca maharṣisaṅghaiḥ surāsurairarcitapādapallavam

"Accompanied by these mountains, O great-minded one, entreat Shiva quickly and bring him here — him who is attended by the gods and hosts of great seers, whose tender feet are worshipped by gods and demons alike."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.104.15)

ब्रह्मोवाच । तथेति चोक्त्वागम आशु हि त्वं तदैव तैः शैलसुतादिभिश्च । तत्रत्यकृत्यं सुविधाय भुक्त्वा महामनास्त्वं शिवसन्निधानम्

brahmovāca tatheti coktvāgama āśu hi tvaṁ tadaiva taiḥ śailasutādibhiśca tatratyakṛtyaṁ suvidhāya bhuktvā mahāmanāstvaṁ śivasannidhānam

Brahma said: "Saying 'so be it,' you swiftly went there at once, together with Mainaka and the other mountain-sons; and having duly performed the rites to be done there and having eaten, you, of great mind, went into the presence of Shiva."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.104.16)

तत्र दृष्टो महादेवो देवादिपरिवारितः । नमस्कृतस्त्वया दीप्तः शैलैस्तैर्भक्तितश्च वै

tatra dṛṣṭo mahādevo devādiparivāritaḥ namaskṛtastvayā dīptaḥ śailaistairbhaktitaśca vai

"There you beheld Mahadeva, surrounded by the gods and others, blazing with splendor, and you, together with those mountains, bowed to him with devotion."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.104.17)

तदा मया विष्णुना च सर्वे देवाः सवासवाः । पप्रच्छुस्त्वां मुने सर्वे रुद्रस्यानुचरास्तथा

tadā mayā viṣṇunā ca sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ papracchustvāṁ mune sarve rudrasyānucarāstathā

"Then I, and Vishnu too, and all the gods together with Indra, as well as all of Rudra's attendants, questioned you, O sage."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.104.18)

विस्मिताः पर्वतान्दृष्ट्वा सन्देहाकुलमानसाः । मैनाकसह्यमेर्वाद्यान्नानालङ्कारसंयुतान्

vismitāḥ parvatāndṛṣṭvā sandehākulamānasāḥ mainākasahyamervādyānnānālaṅkārasaṁyutān

"Astonished at the sight of the mountains — Mainaka, Sahya, Meru, and the rest — adorned with manifold ornaments, our minds troubled with doubt —"

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.104.19)

देवा ऊचुः । हे नारद महाप्राज्ञ विस्मितस्त्वं हि दृश्यसे । सत्कृतोऽसि हिमागेन किं न वा वद विस्तरात्

devā ūcuḥ he nārada mahāprājña vismitastvaṁ hi dṛśyase satkṛto'si himāgena kiṁ na vā vada vistarāt

The gods said: "O Narada, greatly wise one, you appear amazed indeed. Tell us in full — were you honored by the Himalaya, or not?"

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.104.20)

एते कस्मात्समायाताः पर्वता इह सत्तमाः । मैनाकसह्यमेर्वाद्याः सुप्रतापाः स्वलङ्कृताः

ete kasmātsamāyātāḥ parvatā iha sattamāḥ mainākasahyamervādyāḥ supratāpāḥ svalaṅkṛtāḥ

"'Why have these most excellent mountains — Mainaka, Sahya, Meru, and the rest, of great majesty and finely adorned — come here?'"

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.104.21)

कन्यां दास्यति शैलोऽसौ शम्भवे वा न नारद । हिमालयगृहे तात किं भवत्यद्य तद्वद

kanyāṁ dāsyati śailo'sau śambhave vā na nārada himālayagṛhe tāta kiṁ bhavatyadya tadvada

"'Will that mountain give his daughter to Shambhu, or not, O Narada? Tell us, dear one, what is now taking place in the house of Himalaya.'"

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.104.22)

इति सन्दिग्धमनसामस्माकं च दिवौकसाम् । वद त्वं पृच्छमानानां सन्देहं हर सुव्रत

iti sandigdhamanasāmasmākaṁ ca divaukasām vada tvaṁ pṛcchamānānāṁ sandehaṁ hara suvrata

"'Thus our minds, we gods, are full of doubt; as we ask you, speak and dispel our doubt, O you of good vows.'"

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.104.23)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तेषां विष्ण्वादीनान्दिवौकसाम् । अवोचस्तान्मुने त्वं हि विस्मितस्त्वाष्ट्रमायया

brahmovāca ityākarṇya vacasteṣāṁ viṣṇvādīnāndivaukasām avocastānmune tvaṁ hi vismitastvāṣṭramāyayā

Brahma said: Hearing these words of Vishnu and the other gods, you, O sage, though astonished by Tvashta's illusion, spoke to them.

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.104.24)

एकान्तमाश्रित्य च मां हि विष्णु- मभाषथा वाक्यमिदं मुने त्वम् । शचीपतिं सर्वसुरेश्वरं वै पक्षच्छिदं पूर्वरिपुं धराणाम्

ekāntamāśritya ca māṁ hi viṣṇu- mabhāṣathā vākyamidaṁ mune tvam śacīpatiṁ sarvasureśvaraṁ vai pakṣacchidaṁ pūrvaripuṁ dharāṇām

"Then, drawing him apart in private, together with Vishnu — Shachi's lord, ruler of all the gods, clipper of the mountains' wings, ancient foe of the mountain peaks — you, O sage, spoke to him this word:"

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.104.25)

नारद उवाच । त्वष्ट्रा कृतं तद्विकृतं विचित्रं विमोहनं सर्वदिवौकसां हि । येनैव सर्वान्स विमोहितुं सुरान् समिच्छति प्रेमत एव युक्त्या

nārada uvāca tvaṣṭrā kṛtaṁ tadvikṛtaṁ vicitraṁ vimohanaṁ sarvadivaukasāṁ hi yenaiva sarvānsa vimohituṁ surān samicchati premata eva yuktyā

Narada said: "This strange and wondrous illusion, meant to bewilder all the gods, has been wrought by Tvashta, by which he wishes, out of sheer affection and cunning, to delude all the gods."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.104.26)

पुरा कृतं तस्य विमोहनं त्वया सुविस्मृतं तत् सकलं शचीपते । तस्मादसौ त्वां विजिगीषुरेव गृहे ध्रुवं तस्य गिरेर्महात्मनः

purā kṛtaṁ tasya vimohanaṁ tvayā suvismṛtaṁ tat sakalaṁ śacīpate tasmādasau tvāṁ vijigīṣureva gṛhe dhruvaṁ tasya girermahātmanaḥ

"'Long ago you wrought his bewilderment, O lord of Shachi — all of that you have quite forgotten. Therefore he, wishing surely to conquer you, is here now in the house of that great-souled mountain.'"

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.104.27)

अहं विमोहितस्तेन प्रतिरूपेण भास्वता । तथा विष्णुः कृतस्तेन ब्रह्मा शक्रोऽपि तादृशः

ahaṁ vimohitastena pratirūpeṇa bhāsvatā tathā viṣṇuḥ kṛtastena brahmā śakro'pi tādṛśaḥ

"'I myself was bewildered by him through a radiant illusory form; likewise Vishnu was made so by him, and Brahma, and Shakra too, in just the same way.'"

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.104.28)

किं बहूक्तेन देवेश सर्वदेवगणाः कृताः । कृत्रिमाश्चित्ररूपेण न किञ्चिदवशेषितम्

kiṁ bahūktena deveśa sarvadevagaṇāḥ kṛtāḥ kṛtrimāścitrarūpeṇa na kiñcidavaśeṣitam

"'What need of many words, O lord of gods? All the hosts of the gods have been fashioned as counterfeits, in wondrous forms — nothing has been left out.'"

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.104.29)

विमोहनार्थं सर्वेषां देवानां च विशेषतः । कृता माया चित्रमयी परिहासविकारिणी

vimohanārthaṁ sarveṣāṁ devānāṁ ca viśeṣataḥ kṛtā māyā citramayī parihāsavikāriṇī

"'For the sake of bewildering all the gods especially, this wondrous illusion, playful and transforming, has been created.'"

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.104.30)

ब्रह्मोवाच । तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य देवेन्द्रो वाक्यमब्रवीत् । विष्णुम्प्रति तदा शीघ्रं भयाकुलतनुर्हरिम्

brahmovāca tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasya devendro vākyamabravīt viṣṇumprati tadā śīghraṁ bhayākulatanurharim

Brahma said: Hearing his words, Devendra (Indra), his body seized with fear, straightway spoke this word to Hari (Vishnu):

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.104.31)

देवेन्द्र उवाच । देवदेव रमानाथ त्वष्टा मां निहनिष्यति । पुत्रशोकेन तप्तोऽसौ व्याजेनानेन नान्यथा

devendra uvāca devadeva ramānātha tvaṣṭā māṁ nihaniṣyati putraśokena tapto'sau vyājenānena nānyathā

Devendra said: "O god of gods, lord of Rama (Lakshmi)! Tvashta will surely kill me — tormented by grief for his son, he does this by no other pretext than this very device."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.104.32)

ब्रह्मोवाच । तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा देवदेवो जनार्दनः । उवाच प्रहसन् वाक्यं शक्रमाश्वासयंस्तदा

brahmovāca tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā devadevo janārdanaḥ uvāca prahasan vākyaṁ śakramāśvāsayaṁstadā

Brahma said: Hearing his words, Janardana, the god of gods, laughing, spoke this word, reassuring Shakra:

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.104.33)

विष्णुरुवाच । निवातकवचैः पूर्वं मोहितोऽसि शचीपते । महाविद्याबलेनैव दानवैः पूर्ववैरिभिः

viṣṇuruvāca nivātakavacaiḥ pūrvaṁ mohito'si śacīpate mahāvidyābalenaiva dānavaiḥ pūrvavairibhiḥ

Vishnu said: "Long ago, O lord of Shachi, you were deluded by the Nivatakavachas, by the power of their great sorcery — those demons, your ancient foes."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.104.34)

पर्वतो हिमवानेष तथान्येऽखिलपर्वताः । विपक्षा हि कृताः सर्वे मम वाक्याच्च वासव

parvato himavāneṣa tathānye'khilaparvatāḥ vipakṣā hi kṛtāḥ sarve mama vākyācca vāsava

"'This mountain Himavan, and likewise all the other mountains, have all been made your adversaries, O Vasava, and that too by my own word.'"

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.104.35)

तेऽनुस्मृत्या तु वै दृष्ट्वा मायया गिरयो ह्यमी । जेतुमिच्छन्ति ये मूढा न भेतव्यमरावपि

te'nusmṛtyā tu vai dṛṣṭvā māyayā girayo hyamī jetumicchanti ye mūḍhā na bhetavyamarāvapi

"'Recalling that old memory, and seeing these mountains through illusion, they, the deluded ones, wish to conquer you — but there is nothing to fear, even from an enemy.'"

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.104.36)

ईश्वरो नो हि सर्वेषां शङ्करो भक्तवत्सलः । सर्वथा कुशलं शक्र करिष्यति न संशयः

īśvaro no hi sarveṣāṁ śaṅkaro bhaktavatsalaḥ sarvathā kuśalaṁ śakra kariṣyati na saṁśayaḥ

"'Shankara indeed is the lord of us all, ever affectionate to his devotees; he will surely bring about welfare in every way, O Shakra — of this there is no doubt.'"

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.104.37)

ब्रह्मोवाच । एवं संवदमानं तं शक्रं विकृतमानसम् । हरिणोक्तश्च गिरिशो लौकिकीं गतिमाश्रितः

brahmovāca evaṁ saṁvadamānaṁ taṁ śakraṁ vikṛtamānasam hariṇoktaśca giriśo laukikīṁ gatimāśritaḥ

Brahma said: While Hari was thus conversing with Shakra, whose mind was troubled, Girisha (Shiva), who had assumed the manner and ways of the world, spoke to Hari as well:

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.104.38)

ईश्वर उवाच । हे हरे हे सुरेशान किं ब्रूथोऽद्य परस्परम् । इत्युक्त्वा तौ महेशानो मुने त्वां प्रत्युवाच सः

īśvara uvāca he hare he sureśāna kiṁ brūtho'dya parasparam ityuktvā tau maheśāno mune tvāṁ pratyuvāca saḥ

Ishvara said: "O Hari, O lord of the gods, what are you two saying to each other today?" Having said this, that great Lord then, O sage, spoke to you:

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.104.39)

किं नु वक्ति महाशैलो यथार्थं वद नारद । वृत्तान्तं सकलं ब्रूहि न गोप्यं कर्तुमर्हसि

kiṁ nu vakti mahāśailo yathārthaṁ vada nārada vṛttāntaṁ sakalaṁ brūhi na gopyaṁ kartumarhasi

"'What indeed does the great mountain say? Tell me truly, O Narada. Relate the whole matter — you ought not to keep it concealed.'"

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.104.40)

ददाति वा नैव ददाति शैलः सुतां स्वकीयां वद तच्च शीघ्रम् । किं ते दृष्टं किं कृतन्तत्र गत्वा प्रीत्या सर्वं तद्वदाश्वद्य तात

dadāti vā naiva dadāti śailaḥ sutāṁ svakīyāṁ vada tacca śīghram kiṁ te dṛṣṭaṁ kiṁ kṛtantatra gatvā prītyā sarvaṁ tadvadāśvadya tāta

"'Whether the mountain will give his own daughter or not — tell me that quickly. What did you see, what took place there when you went? Tell me all of it now, with affection, at once, dear one.'"

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.104.41)

ब्रह्मोवाच । हत्युक्तः शम्भुना तत्र मुने त्वं देवदर्शनः । सर्वं रहस्यवोचो वै यद् दृष्टं तत्र मण्डपे

brahmovāca hatyuktaḥ śambhunā tatra mune tvaṁ devadarśanaḥ sarvaṁ rahasyavoco vai yad dṛṣṭaṁ tatra maṇḍape

Brahma said: Thus addressed by Shambhu there, you, O sage, who had beheld the gods, told him privately everything you had seen there in the pavilion.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.104.42)

नारद उवाच । देवदेव महादेव शृणु मद्वचनं शुभम् । नास्ति विघ्नभयं नाथ विवाहे किञ्चिदेव हि

nārada uvāca devadeva mahādeva śṛṇu madvacanaṁ śubham nāsti vighnabhayaṁ nātha vivāhe kiñcideva hi

Narada said: "O god of gods, Mahadeva, hear my auspicious words: there is no fear of any obstacle whatsoever, O Lord, in this marriage."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.104.43)

अवश्यमेव शैलेशस्तुभ्यं दास्यति कन्यकाम् । त्वामानयितुमायाता इमे शैला न संशयः

avaśyameva śaileśastubhyaṁ dāsyati kanyakām tvāmānayitumāyātā ime śailā na saṁśayaḥ

"'The lord of mountains will surely give you his daughter without fail; these mountains have come here to bring you — of this there is no doubt.'"

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.104.44)

किन्तु ह्यमरमोहार्थं माया विरचिताद्भुता । कुतूहलार्थं सर्वज्ञ न कश्चिद्विघ्नसम्भवः

kintu hyamaramohārthaṁ māyā viracitādbhutā kutūhalārthaṁ sarvajña na kaścidvighnasambhavaḥ

"'But, for the sake of bewildering the immortals, a wondrous illusion has been contrived, merely for amusement, O all-knowing one; there is no possibility of any obstacle at all.'"

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.104.45)

विचित्रं मण्डपं गेहेऽकार्षीत्तस्य तदाज्ञया । विश्वकर्मा महामायी नानाश्चर्यमयं विभो

vicitraṁ maṇḍapaṁ gehe'kārṣīttasya tadājñayā viśvakarmā mahāmāyī nānāścaryamayaṁ vibho

"'By his command, Vishwakarma, the great master of illusion, has built in his house a wondrous pavilion, full of many marvels, O all-pervading one.'"

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.104.46)

सर्वदेवसमाजश्च कृतस्तत्र विमोहनः । तं दृष्ट्वा विस्मयं प्राप्तोऽहं तन्मायाविमोहितः

sarvadevasamājaśca kṛtastatra vimohanaḥ taṁ dṛṣṭvā vismayaṁ prāpto'haṁ tanmāyāvimohitaḥ

"'An assembly resembling all the gods has been fashioned there to bewilder; seeing it, I too was struck with wonder, deluded by that very illusion.'"

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.104.47)

ब्रह्मोवाच । तच्छ्रुत्वा तद्वचस्तात लोकाचारकरः प्रभुः । हर्यादीन्प्रहसन् शम्भुरुवाच सकलान्सुरान्

brahmovāca tacchrutvā tadvacastāta lokācārakaraḥ prabhuḥ haryādīnprahasan śambhuruvāca sakalānsurān

Brahma said: Hearing those words, dear one, the Lord, who follows the ways of the world, Shambhu, laughing, spoke to Hari and all the other gods:

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.104.48)

ईश्वर उवाच । कन्यां दास्यति चेन्मह्यं पर्वतो हि हिमाचलः । मायया मम किं कार्यं वद विष्णो यथातथम्

īśvara uvāca kanyāṁ dāsyati cenmahyaṁ parvato hi himācalaḥ māyayā mama kiṁ kāryaṁ vada viṣṇo yathātatham

Ishvara said: "If the mountain Himachala will indeed give me his daughter, then what use have I for this illusion? Tell me truly, O Vishnu."

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.104.49)

हे ब्रह्मन् शक्र मुनयः सुरा ब्रूत यथार्थतः । मायया मम किं कार्यं कन्यां दास्यति चेद्गिरिः

he brahman śakra munayaḥ surā brūta yathārthataḥ māyayā mama kiṁ kāryaṁ kanyāṁ dāsyati cedgiriḥ

"'O Brahma, Shakra, sages, gods — tell me truly: what use have I for illusion, if the mountain will indeed give his daughter?'"

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.104.50)

केनाप्युपायेन फलं हि साध्य- मित्युच्यते पण्डितैर्न्यायविद्भिः । तस्मात्सर्वैर्गम्यतां शीघ्रमेव कार्यार्थिभिर्विष्णुपुरोगमैश्च

kenāpyupāyena phalaṁ hi sādhya- mityucyate paṇḍitairnyāyavidbhiḥ tasmātsarvairgamyatāṁ śīghrameva kāryārthibhirviṣṇupurogamaiśca

"'By some means or other the result is indeed to be accomplished' — so say the wise, learned in right method. Therefore let all, headed by Vishnu, eager to accomplish the task, go there at once.'"

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.104.51)

ब्रह्मोवाच । एवं संवदमानोऽसौ देवैः शम्भुरभूत्तदा । कृतः स्मरेणेव वशी वशं वा प्राकृतो नरः

brahmovāca evaṁ saṁvadamāno'sau devaiḥ śambhurabhūttadā kṛtaḥ smareṇeva vaśī vaśaṁ vā prākṛto naraḥ

Brahma said: Thus conversing with the gods, Shambhu then became — as though made subject to Kama, the god of love, or like an ordinary man brought under another's sway.

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.104.52)

अथ शम्भ्वाज्ञया सर्वे विष्ण्वाद्या निर्जरास्तदा । ऋषयश्च महात्मानो ययुर्मोहभ्रमावहम्

atha śambhvājñayā sarve viṣṇvādyā nirjarāstadā ṛṣayaśca mahātmāno yayurmohabhramāvaham

"Then, by Shambhu's command, all the gods headed by Vishnu, and the great-souled sages, set out, carried along by that bewildering illusion."

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.104.53)

पुरस्कृत्य मुने त्वां च पर्वतांस्तान्सविस्मयाः । हिमाद्रेश्च तदा जग्मुर्मन्दिरं परमाद्भुतम्

puraskṛtya mune tvāṁ ca parvatāṁstānsavismayāḥ himādreśca tadā jagmurmandiraṁ paramādbhutam

"Placing you, O sage, and those mountains at their head, filled with wonder, they then went to the supremely marvelous mansion of Himadri."

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.104.54)

अथ विष्ण्वादिसंयुक्तो मुदितैःस्वबलैर्युतः । आजगामोपहैमागपुरं प्रमुदितो हरः

atha viṣṇvādisaṁyukto muditaiḥsvabalairyutaḥ ājagāmopahaimāgapuraṁ pramudito haraḥ

"Then Hara, joined with Vishnu and the others, accompanied by his own joyful hosts, came, greatly delighted, near to the city of the mountain of snow."
