Chapter 110All chaptersChapter 112

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.111.1)

brahmovāca etasminnantare tatra gargācāryapraṇoditaḥ himavānmenayā sārdhaṁ kanyāṁ dātuṁ pracakrame

Brahma said: "Meanwhile there, urged on by the preceptor Garga, Himavan, together with Mena, began the rite of giving away his daughter."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.111.2)

haimaṁ kalaśamādāya menā cārdhāṅgamāśritā himādreśca mahābhāgā vastrābharaṇabhūṣitā

"Taking up a golden vessel, Mena, seated at the side of Himadri as his very half-body, that most fortunate woman, adorned with garments and ornaments —"

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.111.3)

pādyādibhistataḥ śailaḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ svapurohitaḥ taṁ varaṁ varayāmāsa vastracandanabhūṣaṇaiḥ

"— then the mountain, greatly delighted, together with his own family priest, honored that bridegroom with water for the feet and the rest, and with garments, sandal-paste, and ornaments."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.111.4)

tato himādriṇā proktā dvijāstithyādikīrtane prayogo bhaṇyatāṁ tāvadasminsamaya āgate

"Then Himadri instructed the brahmins: 'Let the proper ritual formula, beginning with the declaration of the date and so forth, now be recited, for this is the moment that has arrived.'"

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.111.5)

tatheti coktā te sarve kālajñā dvijasattamāḥ tithyādikīrtanaṁ cakruḥ prītyā paramanirvṛtāḥ

"'So be it,' said all those best of brahmins, learned in the reckoning of time; and, filled with the greatest delight, they performed the recitation of the date and the rest."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.111.6)

tato himācalaḥ prītyā śambhunā prerito hṛdā sūtīkṛtapareśena vihasan śambhumabravīt

"Then Himachala, affectionately, his heart stirred by Shambhu himself — the Supreme Lord who had made himself easy of approach — smiling, spoke to Shambhu:"

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.111.7)

svagotraṁ kathyatāṁ śambho pravaraśca kulaṁ tathā nāma vedaṁ tathā śākhāṁ mākārṣīḥ samayātyayam

"'Tell me your own gotra, O Shambhu, and your pravara and lineage as well; your name, your Veda, and your shakha too — do not let this proper moment pass by unfulfilled.'"

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.111.8)

brahmovāca ityākarṇya vacastasya himādreḥ śaṅkarastadā sumukho vimukhaḥ sadyo'pyaśocyaḥ śocyatāṁ gataḥ

Brahma said: "Hearing these words of Himadri, Shankara then — his face, until then so joyful, suddenly turned away — he who is beyond all cause for grief, seemed, for a moment, overtaken by distress."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.111.9)

evaṁvidhaḥ suravarairmunibhistadānīṁ gandharvayakṣagaṇasiddhagaṇaistathaiva dṛṣṭo niruttaramukho bhagavānmaheśo'- kārṣīssuhāsyamatha tatra sa nārada tvam

Seen in this state by the best of the gods and the sages, and likewise by the hosts of Gandharvas, Yakshas, and Siddhas — the Blessed Lord Mahesha, his face at a loss for any answer — then you, O Narada, brought forth there a gentle smile.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.111.10)

vīṇāmavādayaṁstvaṁ hi brahmavijño'tha nārada śivena preritastatra manasā śambhumānasaḥ

Then you, O Narada, knower of Brahman, began to play your vina, urged on there by Shiva, your mind fixed wholly on Shambhu.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.111.11)

tadā nivārito dhīmān parvatendreṇa vai haṭhāt viṣṇunā ca mayā devairmunibhiścākhilaistathā

Then, O wise one, you were firmly restrained by the lord of mountains, and likewise by Vishnu, by me, by the gods, and by all the sages.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.111.12)

na nivṛtto'bhavastvaṁ hi sa yadā śaṅkarecchayā iti prokto'driṇā tarhi vīṇāṁ mā vādayādhunā

Yet, since it was by Shankara's own will, you would not desist; and so the mountain said to you, 'Then do not play the vina now.'

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.111.13)

suniṣiddho haṭhāttena devarṣe tvaṁ yadā budha pratyavoco girīśaṁ taṁ susaṁsmṛtya maheśvaram

When you, O wise divine sage, had thus been firmly forbidden by him, you, calling Maheshvara well to mind, replied to that lord of the mountain:

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.111.14)

nārada uvāca tvaṁ hi mūḍhatvamāpanno na jānāsi ca kiñcana vācye maheśaviṣaye'tīvāsi tvaṁ bahirmukhaḥ

Narada said: "You have fallen into confusion indeed, and know nothing at all; in the matter that must be spoken of Mahesha, you are utterly turned away from the truth."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.111.15)

tvayā pṛṣṭho haraḥ sākṣātsvagotrakathanaṁ prati samaye'smiṁstadatyantamupahāsakaraṁ vacaḥ

"'You have asked Hara himself, at this very moment, to declare his own gotra — that is a word bringing utter ridicule upon this occasion.'"

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.111.16)

asya gotraṁ kulaṁ nāma naiva jānanti parvata viṣṇubrahmādayo'pīha pareṣāṁ kā kathā smṛtā

"'O mountain, not even Vishnu, Brahma, and the others here know his gotra, his lineage, or his name — what then is to be said of others?'"

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.111.17)

yasyaikadivase śaila brahmakoṭirlayaṁ gatā sa eva śaṅkarastedya dṛṣṭaḥ kālītapobalāt

"'He in whose single day ten million Brahmas pass into dissolution, O mountain — that very Shankara you have seen today, by the power of Kali's own austerity.'"

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.111.18)

arūpo'yaṁ parabrahma nirguṇaḥ prakṛteḥ paraḥ nirākāro nirvikārī māyādhīśaḥ parātparaḥ

"'He is formless, the Supreme Brahman, without attributes, beyond Prakriti; without shape, unchanging, the ruler of Maya, higher than the highest.'"

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.111.19)

agotrakulanāmā hi svatantro bhaktavatsalaḥ tadicchayā hi saguṇaḥ sutanurbahunāmabhṛt

"'He is without gotra, without lineage, without name — independent, ever affectionate to his devotees; and by his own will he becomes possessed of attributes, of a beautiful body, bearing countless names.'"

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.111.20)

sugotrī gotrahīnaśca kulahīnaḥ kulīnakaḥ pārvatītapasā so'dya jāmātā te na saṁśayaḥ

"'Of excellent gotra, and yet without gotra; without lineage, and yet of the noblest lineage — by Parvati's austerity he has today, without doubt, become your very son-in-law.'"

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.111.21)

līlāvihāriṇā tena mohitaṁ sacarācaram no jānāti śivaṁ ko'pi prājño'pi girisattama

"'By him, who delights in his own play, this whole moving and unmoving world has been bewildered; no one, however wise, truly knows Shiva, O best of mountains.'"

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.111.22)

liṅgākṛtermaheśasya kena dṛṣṭaṁ na mastakam viṣṇurgatvā hi pātālaṁ tadainaṁ nāpa vismitaḥ

"'Who has ever seen the very crown of Mahesha's fiery linga-form? Vishnu himself, going even into the netherworld, could not find its end, and stood amazed.'"

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.111.23)

kiṁ bahūktyā nagaśreṣṭha śivamāyā duratyayā tadadhīnāstrayo lokā haribrahmādayo'pi ca

"'What need of many words, O best of mountains? Shiva's illusion is insurmountable; the three worlds are subject to it, and Hari, Brahma, and the rest as well.'"

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.111.24)

brahmovāca ityuktvā tvaṁ mune jñānī śivecchākāryakārakaḥ pratyavocaḥ punastaṁ vai śailedraṁ harṣayan girā

Brahma said: "Having said this, you, O wise sage, the accomplisher of Shiva's own will, spoke once more to that lord of the mountain, gladdening him with your words:"

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.111.26)

Narada said: "Hear my words, dear one, O great mountain, father of Shiva; and having heard them, give your daughter, the goddess, to Shankara."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.111.27)

saguṇasya maheśasya līlayā rūpadhāriṇaḥ gotraṁ kulaṁ vijānīhi nādameva hi kevalam

"'Of Mahesha, who through his own play has taken on attributes and form, know that his gotra and lineage is Nada alone — the primal sound, and nothing else.'"

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.111.28)
