The Revival of Kama by Shiva's Command

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.114.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । तस्मिन्नवसरे ज्ञात्वानुकूलं समयं रतिः । सुप्रसन्ना च तं प्राह शङ्करं दीनवत्सलम्

brahmovāca tasminnavasare jñātvānukūlaṁ samayaṁ ratiḥ suprasannā ca taṁ prāha śaṅkaraṁ dīnavatsalam

Brahma said: "At that moment, Rati, knowing the time to be favorable, joyfully approached and spoke to Shankara, who cherishes the humble."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.114.2)

रतिरुवाच । गृहीत्वा पार्वतीं प्राप्तं सौभाग्यमतिदुर्लभम् । किमर्थं प्राणनाथो मे निस्स्वार्थं भस्मसात्कृतः

ratiruvāca gṛhītvā pārvatīṁ prāptaṁ saubhāgyamatidurlabham kimarthaṁ prāṇanātho me nissvārthaṁ bhasmasātkṛtaḥ

Rati said: "Having taken Parvati, you have attained a most rare good fortune; why then was my lord of life reduced to ashes, for no cause?"

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.114.3)

जीवयात्र पतिं मे हि कामव्यापारमात्मनि । कुरु दूरं च सन्तापं समविश्लेषहेतुकम्

jīvayātra patiṁ me hi kāmavyāpāramātmani kuru dūraṁ ca santāpaṁ samaviśleṣahetukam

"Restore my husband to life; take up the work of love within yourself, and drive far away this grief born of our unequal separation."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.114.4)

विवाहोत्सव एतस्मिन् सुखिनो निखिला जनाः । अहमेका महेशान दुःखिनी स्वपतिं विना

vivāhotsava etasmin sukhino nikhilā janāḥ ahamekā maheśāna duḥkhinī svapatiṁ vinā

"At this wedding festival, all people are joyful; I alone, O Great Lord, am sorrowful, without my husband."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.114.5)

सनाथां कुरु मां देव प्रसन्नो भव शङ्कर । स्वोक्तं सत्यं विधेहि त्वं दीनबन्धो पर प्रभो

sanāthāṁ kuru māṁ deva prasanno bhava śaṅkara svoktaṁ satyaṁ vidhehi tvaṁ dīnabandho para prabho

"O God, make me one who has a husband again; be gracious, O Shankara. Fulfill your own promise, O friend of the humble, supreme Lord."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.114.6)

त्वां विना कः समर्थोऽत्र त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे । नाशने मम दुःखस्य ज्ञात्वेति करुणां कुरु

tvāṁ vinā kaḥ samartho'tra trailokye sacarācare nāśane mama duḥkhasya jñātveti karuṇāṁ kuru

"Who besides you is capable, in this whole moving and unmoving triple world, of destroying my sorrow? Knowing this, show your compassion."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.114.7)

सोत्सवे स्वविवाहेऽस्मिन्सर्वानन्दप्रदायिनी । सोत्सवामपि मां नाथ कुरु दीनकृपाकर

sotsave svavivāhe'sminsarvānandapradāyinī sotsavāmapi māṁ nātha kuru dīnakṛpākara

"At this festive wedding of your own, which gives joy to all, make me too, O Lord, share in that joy — O compassionate one to the humble."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.114.8)

जीविते मम नाथे हि पार्वत्या प्रियया सह । सुविहारः प्रपूर्णश्च भविष्यति न संशयः

jīvite mama nāthe hi pārvatyā priyayā saha suvihāraḥ prapūrṇaśca bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ

"Only when my husband lives again will your delightful union with your beloved Parvati be complete, without doubt."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.114.9)

सर्वं कर्तुं समर्थोऽसि यतस्त्वं परमेश्वरः । किं बहूक्त्यात्र सर्वेश जीवयाशु पतिं मम

sarvaṁ kartuṁ samartho'si yatastvaṁ parameśvaraḥ kiṁ bahūktyātra sarveśa jīvayāśu patiṁ mama

"Since you are the Supreme Lord, you are capable of doing anything; what need of many words, O Lord of all — quickly revive my husband."

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.114.10)

ब्रह्मोवाच । तदित्युक्त्वा कामभस्म ददौ सग्रन्थिबन्धनम् । रुदोद पुरतः शम्भोर्नाथ नाथेत्युदीर्य च

brahmovāca tadityuktvā kāmabhasma dadau sagranthibandhanam rudoda purataḥ śambhornātha nāthetyudīrya ca

Brahma said: "Having said this, she placed before Shambhu the ashes of Kama, tied in a knotted cloth, and wept, crying out, 'My lord, my lord!'"

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.114.11)

रतिरोदनमाकर्ण्य सरस्वत्यादयः स्त्रियः । रुरुदुः सकला देव्यः प्रोचुर्दीनतरं वचः

ratirodanamākarṇya sarasvatyādayaḥ striyaḥ ruruduḥ sakalā devyaḥ procurdīnataraṁ vacaḥ

"Hearing Rati's weeping, all the goddesses, Saraswati and the rest, also wept, and spoke words even more piteous."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.114.12)

देव्य ऊचुः । भक्तवत्सलनामा त्वं दीनबन्धुर्दयानिधिः ॥ कामं जीवय सोत्साहां रतिं कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते

devya ūcuḥ bhaktavatsalanāmā tvaṁ dīnabandhurdayānidhiḥ kāmaṁ jīvaya sotsāhāṁ ratiṁ kuru namo'stu te

The goddesses said: "Your very name means cherisher of your devotees, friend of the humble, ocean of compassion; revive Kama, and restore Rati's joy — homage to you."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.114.13)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इति तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रसन्नोऽभून्महेश्वरः । कृपादृष्टिं चकाराशु करुणासागरः प्रभुः

brahmovāca iti tadvacanaṁ śrutvā prasanno'bhūnmaheśvaraḥ kṛpādṛṣṭiṁ cakārāśu karuṇāsāgaraḥ prabhuḥ

Brahma said: "Hearing these words, the Great Lord was pleased, and that Lord, ocean of compassion, at once cast his glance of mercy."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.114.14)

सुधादृष्ट्या शूलभृतो भस्मतो निर्गतः स्मरः । तद्रूपवेषचिह्नात्मा सुन्दरोऽद्भुतमूर्तिमान्

sudhādṛṣṭyā śūlabhṛto bhasmato nirgataḥ smaraḥ tadrūpaveṣacihnātmā sundaro'dbhutamūrtimān

"By the nectar-like glance of the trident-bearer, Smara (Kama) emerged from the ashes, bearing his own form, marks, and beauty — a wondrous, embodied figure."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.114.15)

तद्रूपश्च तदाकारं सस्मितं सधनुशरम् । दृष्ट्वा पतिं रतिस्तं च प्रणनाम महेश्वरम्

tadrūpaśca tadākāraṁ sasmitaṁ sadhanuśaram dṛṣṭvā patiṁ ratistaṁ ca praṇanāma maheśvaram

"Seeing her husband, of that same form and shape, smiling, bow and arrow in hand, Rati bowed to that Great Lord."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.114.16)

कृतार्थाभूच्छिवं देवं तुष्टाव च कृताञ्जलिः । प्राणनाथप्रदं पत्या जीवितेन पुनः पुनः

kṛtārthābhūcchivaṁ devaṁ tuṣṭāva ca kṛtāñjaliḥ prāṇanāthapradaṁ patyā jīvitena punaḥ punaḥ

"Fulfilled, she praised Lord Shiva with joined palms, again and again, for restoring her lord of life through her husband's revival."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.114.17)

कामस्य स्तुतिमाकर्ण्य सनारीकस्य शङ्करः । प्रसन्नोऽभवदत्यन्तमुवाच करुणार्द्रधीः

kāmasya stutimākarṇya sanārīkasya śaṅkaraḥ prasanno'bhavadatyantamuvāca karuṇārdradhīḥ

"Hearing this praise from Kama and his wife, Shankara became exceedingly pleased, and, his heart melting with compassion, spoke."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.114.18)

शङ्कर उवाच । प्रसन्नोऽहं तव स्तुत्या सनारीकस्य चित्तज । स्वयम्भव वरं ब्रूहि वाञ्छितं तद् ददामि ते

śaṅkara uvāca prasanno'haṁ tava stutyā sanārīkasya cittaja svayambhava varaṁ brūhi vāñchitaṁ tad dadāmi te

Shankara said: "O Chitraja, I am pleased by the praise of you and your wife; ask for a boon yourself, whatever you desire, and I shall grant it."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.114.19)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इति शम्भुवचः श्रुत्वा महानन्दः स्मरस्ततः । उवाच साञ्जलिर्नम्रो गद्गदाक्षरया गिरा

brahmovāca iti śambhuvacaḥ śrutvā mahānandaḥ smarastataḥ uvāca sāñjalirnamro gadgadākṣarayā girā

Brahma said: "Hearing Shambhu's words, Smara, filled with great joy, then spoke, bowing with joined palms, his voice choked with emotion."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.114.20)

काम उवाच । देवदेव महादेव करुणासागर प्रभो । यदि प्रसन्नः सर्वेश ममानन्दकरो भव

kāma uvāca devadeva mahādeva karuṇāsāgara prabho yadi prasannaḥ sarveśa mamānandakaro bhava

Kama said: "O God of gods, Mahadeva, ocean of compassion, O Lord; if you are pleased, O Lord of all, then be the giver of my joy."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.114.21)

क्षमस्व मेऽपराधं हि यत्कृतश्च पुरा प्रभो । स्वजनेषु परां प्रीतिं भक्तिं देहि स्वपादयोः

kṣamasva me'parādhaṁ hi yatkṛtaśca purā prabho svajaneṣu parāṁ prītiṁ bhaktiṁ dehi svapādayoḥ

"Forgive, O Lord, whatever offense I once committed; grant supreme love toward your own devotees, and devotion to your feet."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.114.22)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य स्मरवचः प्रसन्नः परमेश्वरः । ओमित्युक्त्वाब्रवीत्तं वै विहसन्करुणानिधिः

brahmovāca ityākarṇya smaravacaḥ prasannaḥ parameśvaraḥ omityuktvābravīttaṁ vai vihasankaruṇānidhiḥ

Brahma said: "Hearing Smara's words, the Supreme Lord was pleased and, smiling, that ocean of compassion said 'Om' and spoke to him thus."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.114.23)

ईश्वर उवाच । हे कामाहं प्रसन्नोऽस्मि भयं त्यज महामते । गच्छ विष्णुसमीपं च बहिःस्थाने स्थितो भव

īśvara uvāca he kāmāhaṁ prasanno'smi bhayaṁ tyaja mahāmate gaccha viṣṇusamīpaṁ ca bahiḥsthāne sthito bhava

The Lord said: "O Kama, I am pleased; abandon your fear, O noble one. Go to Vishnu's presence and remain stationed outside."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.114.24)

ब्रह्मोवाच । तच्छ्रुत्वा शिरसा नत्वा परिक्रम्य स्तुवन्विभुम् । बहिर्गत्वा हरिन्देवान् प्रणम्य समुपास्त सः

brahmovāca tacchrutvā śirasā natvā parikramya stuvanvibhum bahirgatvā harindevān praṇamya samupāsta saḥ

Brahma said: "Hearing this, he bowed his head, circumambulated the Lord in praise, and going outside, bowed to Hari and the gods, and waited upon them."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.114.25)

कामं सम्भाष्य देवाश्च ददुस्तस्मै शुभाशिषम् । विष्ण्वादयः प्रसन्नास्ते प्रोचुः स्मृत्वा शिवं हृदि

kāmaṁ sambhāṣya devāśca dadustasmai śubhāśiṣam viṣṇvādayaḥ prasannāste procuḥ smṛtvā śivaṁ hṛdi

"The gods conversed with Kama and gave him their blessing; Vishnu and the others, pleased, remembering Shiva in their hearts, spoke to him."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.114.26)

देवा ऊचुः । धन्यस्त्वं स्मर सन्दग्धः शिवेनानुग्रहीकृतः । जीवयामास सत्त्वांशकृपादृष्ट्याखिलेश्वरः

devā ūcuḥ dhanyastvaṁ smara sandagdhaḥ śivenānugrahīkṛtaḥ jīvayāmāsa sattvāṁśakṛpādṛṣṭyākhileśvaraḥ

The gods said: "Blessed are you, Smara — once burned to ashes, you have now been graced by Shiva; the Lord of all revived you with a glance of pure, compassionate favor."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.114.27)

सुखदुःखदो न चान्योऽस्ति यतः स्वकृतभुक् पुमान् । काले रक्षा विवाहश्च निषेकः केन वार्यते

sukhaduḥkhado na cānyo'sti yataḥ svakṛtabhuk pumān kāle rakṣā vivāhaśca niṣekaḥ kena vāryate

"There is no other giver of joy or sorrow, since a man reaps only what he himself has done; who indeed can prevent protection, marriage, and conception when their proper time comes?"

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.114.28)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्त्वा ते च सम्मान्य तं सुखेनामरास्तदा । सन्तस्थुस्तत्र विष्ण्वाद्याः सर्वे लब्धमनोरथाः

brahmovāca ityuktvā te ca sammānya taṁ sukhenāmarāstadā santasthustatra viṣṇvādyāḥ sarve labdhamanorathāḥ

Brahma said: "Having said this, the immortals honored him joyfully; and there Vishnu and all the others remained, their wishes fulfilled."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.114.29)

सोऽपि प्रमुदितस्तत्र समुवास शिवाज्ञया । जयशब्दो नमः शब्दः साधुशब्दो बभूव ह

so'pi pramuditastatra samuvāsa śivājñayā jayaśabdo namaḥ śabdaḥ sādhuśabdo babhūva ha

"He too, greatly delighted, remained there by Shiva's command; and there arose shouts of victory, of homage, and of praise."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.114.30)

ततः शम्भुर्वासगेहे वामे संस्थाप्य पार्वतीम् । मिष्टान्नं भोजयामास तं च सा च मुदान्विता

tataḥ śambhurvāsagehe vāme saṁsthāpya pārvatīm miṣṭānnaṁ bhojayāmāsa taṁ ca sā ca mudānvitā

"Then Shambhu, in the bridal chamber, seated Parvati on his left; and joyfully he fed her sweet food, and she fed him in turn."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.114.31)

अथ शम्भुर्भवाचारी तत्र कृत्यं विधाय तत् । मेनामामन्त्र्य शैलं च जनवासं जगाम सः

atha śambhurbhavācārī tatra kṛtyaṁ vidhāya tat menāmāmantrya śailaṁ ca janavāsaṁ jagāma saḥ

"Then Shambhu, observing worldly custom, having performed that rite there, took leave of Mena and the Mountain, and went to the guest-lodging."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.114.32)

महोत्सवस्तदा चासीद् वेदध्वनिरभून्मुने । वाद्यानि वादयामासुर्जनाश्चतुर्विधानि च

mahotsavastadā cāsīd vedadhvanirabhūnmune vādyāni vādayāmāsurjanāścaturvidhāni ca

"Then, O sage, there was a great celebration and the sound of Vedic chanting; the people played instruments of the four kinds."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.114.33)

शम्भुरागत्य स्वस्थानं ववन्दे च मुनींस्तदा । हरिं च मां भवाचाराद्वन्दितोऽभूत्सुरादिभिः

śambhurāgatya svasthānaṁ vavande ca munīṁstadā hariṁ ca māṁ bhavācārādvandito'bhūtsurādibhiḥ

"Shambhu, arriving at his place, then paid homage to the sages, and to Hari and me too; and, in observance of worldly custom, he was in turn honored by the gods and others."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.114.34)

जयशब्दो बभूवाथ नमश्शब्दस्तथैव च । वेदध्वनिश्च शुभदः सर्वविघ्नविदारणः

jayaśabdo babhūvātha namaśśabdastathaiva ca vedadhvaniśca śubhadaḥ sarvavighnavidāraṇaḥ

"Then there arose shouts of victory and of homage, and the auspicious sound of the Vedas, dispelling every obstacle."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.114.35)

अथ विष्णुरहं शक्रः सर्वे देवाश्च सर्षयः । सिद्धा उपसुरा नागास्तुष्टुवुस्ते पृथक्पृथक्

atha viṣṇurahaṁ śakraḥ sarve devāśca sarṣayaḥ siddhā upasurā nāgāstuṣṭuvuste pṛthakpṛthak

"Then Vishnu, I myself, Indra, all the gods together with the sages, the Siddhas, the Upasuras, and the Nagas — each of them separately offered praise."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.114.36)

देवा ऊचुः । जय शम्भोऽखिलाधार जय नाम महेश्वर । जय रुद्र महादेव जय विश्वम्भर प्रभो

devā ūcuḥ jaya śambho'khilādhāra jaya nāma maheśvara jaya rudra mahādeva jaya viśvambhara prabho

The gods said: "Victory to Shambhu, support of all! Victory to the Great Lord by name! Victory to Rudra, Mahadeva! Victory to you, O Lord, sustainer of the universe!"

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.114.37)

जय कालीपते स्वामिन् जयानन्दप्रवर्धक । जय त्र्यम्बक सर्वेश जय मायापते विभो

jaya kālīpate svāmin jayānandapravardhaka jaya tryambaka sarveśa jaya māyāpate vibho

"Victory to you, Lord of Kali, our master! Victory to you, increaser of joy! Victory, Tryambaka, Lord of all! Victory, all-pervading Lord of maya!"

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.114.38)

जय निर्गुण निष्काम कारणातीत सर्वग । जय लीलाखिलाधार धृतरूप नमोऽस्तु ते

jaya nirguṇa niṣkāma kāraṇātīta sarvaga jaya līlākhilādhāra dhṛtarūpa namo'stu te

"Victory to you, beyond qualities, beyond desire, beyond all causes, all-pervading! Victory to you, support of all through your divine play, who take on forms — homage to you!"

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.114.39)

जय स्वभक्तसत्कामप्रदेश करुणाकर । जय सानन्दसद्रूप जय मायागुणाकृते

jaya svabhaktasatkāmapradeśa karuṇākara jaya sānandasadrūpa jaya māyāguṇākṛte

"Victory to you, granter of the true desires of your own devotees, fount of compassion! Victory to you, blissful and ever-real form! Victory to you, who take on form through the qualities of maya!"

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.114.40)

जयोग्र मृड सर्वात्मन् दीनबन्धो दयानिधे । जयाविकार मायेश वाङ्मनोऽतीतविग्रह

jayogra mṛḍa sarvātman dīnabandho dayānidhe jayāvikāra māyeśa vāṅmano'tītavigraha

"Victory to you, fierce and gentle, soul of all, friend of the humble, treasury of compassion! Victory to you, changeless Lord of maya, whose form is beyond speech and mind!"

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.114.41)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इति स्तुत्वा महेशानं गिरिजानायकं प्रभुम् । सिषेविरे परप्रीत्या विष्ण्वाद्यास्ते यथोचितम्

brahmovāca iti stutvā maheśānaṁ girijānāyakaṁ prabhum siṣevire paraprītyā viṣṇvādyāste yathocitam

Brahma said: "Having thus praised the Great Lord, master of Girija, Vishnu and the others waited upon him with great love, each according to what was fitting."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.114.42)

अथ शम्भुर्महेशानो लीलात्ततनुरीश्वरः । ददौ मानवरं तेषां सर्वेषां तत्र नारद

atha śambhurmaheśāno līlāttatanurīśvaraḥ dadau mānavaraṁ teṣāṁ sarveṣāṁ tatra nārada

"Then, O Narada, Shambhu, the Great Lord who has taken on form through his divine play, gave to all of them there the boon of honor."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.114.43)

विष्ण्वाद्यास्तेऽखिलास्तात प्राप्याज्ञां परमेशितुः । अतिहृष्टाः प्रसन्नास्याः स्वस्थानं जग्मुरादृताः

viṣṇvādyāste'khilāstāta prāpyājñāṁ parameśituḥ atihṛṣṭāḥ prasannāsyāḥ svasthānaṁ jagmurādṛtāḥ

"O son, Vishnu and all the others, having received the leave of the Supreme Lord, went with great joy, their faces radiant, honored, each to his own abode."
