The Feast for the Groom's Party, and Shiva's Repose

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.115.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । अथ शैलवरस्तात हिमवान्भाग्यसत्तमः । प्राङ्गणं रचयामास भोजनार्थं विचक्षणः

brahmovāca atha śailavarastāta himavānbhāgyasattamaḥ prāṅgaṇaṁ racayāmāsa bhojanārthaṁ vicakṣaṇaḥ

Brahma said: "Then, O son, the excellent mountain Himavan, most fortunate and wise, prepared the courtyard for the feast."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.115.2)

मार्जनं लेपनं सम्यक्कारयामास तस्य सः । स सुगन्धैरलञ्चक्रे नानावस्तुभिरादरात्

mārjanaṁ lepanaṁ samyakkārayāmāsa tasya saḥ sa sugandhairalañcakre nānāvastubhirādarāt

"He had it thoroughly swept and plastered, and reverently adorned it with fragrances and various objects."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.115.3)

अथ शैलः सुरान् सर्वानन्यानपि च सेश्वरान् । भोजनायाह्वयामास पुत्रैः शैलैः परैरपि

atha śailaḥ surān sarvānanyānapi ca seśvarān bhojanāyāhvayāmāsa putraiḥ śailaiḥ parairapi

"Then the Mountain, together with his sons and other mountains, invited all the gods and the other lords to the feast."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.115.4)

शैलाह्वानमथाकर्ण्य स प्रभुः साच्युतो मुने । सर्वैःसुरादिभिस्तत्र भोजनाय ययौ मुदा

śailāhvānamathākarṇya sa prabhuḥ sācyuto mune sarvaiḥsurādibhistatra bhojanāya yayau mudā

"Hearing the Mountain's invitation, O sage, the Lord, together with Achyuta and all the gods, went there joyfully for the feast."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.115.5)

गिरिः प्रभुं च सर्वांस्तान् सुसत्कृत्य यथाविधि । मुदोपवेशयामास सत्पीठेषु गृहान्तरे

giriḥ prabhuṁ ca sarvāṁstān susatkṛtya yathāvidhi mudopaveśayāmāsa satpīṭheṣu gṛhāntare

"The Mountain honored the Lord and all of them duly, and joyfully seated them on fine seats within the house."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.115.6)

नानासुभोज्यवस्तूनि परिवेष्य च तत्पुनः । साञ्चलिर्भोजनायाज्ञां चक्रे विज्ञप्तिमानतः

nānāsubhojyavastūni pariveṣya ca tatpunaḥ sāñcalirbhojanāyājñāṁ cakre vijñaptimānataḥ

"Having served them various fine foods, he then, with joined palms, humbly requested and gave leave for them to eat."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.115.7)

अथ सम्मानितास्तत्र देवा विष्णुपुरोगमाः । सदाशिवं पुरस्कृत्य बुभुजुः सकलाश्च ते

atha sammānitāstatra devā viṣṇupurogamāḥ sadāśivaṁ puraskṛtya bubhujuḥ sakalāśca te

"Then the honored gods, headed by Vishnu, all ate there, placing Sadashiva foremost."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.115.8)

तदा सर्वे हि मिलिता ऐकपद्येन सर्वशः । पङ्क्तिभूताश्च बुभुजुर्विहसन्तः पृथक्पृथक्

tadā sarve hi militā aikapadyena sarvaśaḥ paṅktibhūtāśca bubhujurvihasantaḥ pṛthakpṛthak

"Then all of them, gathered together as one, sat in rows and ate, laughing merrily, each in their own way."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.115.9)

नन्दिभृङ्गिवीरभद्रवीरभद्रगणाः पृथक् । बुभुजुस्ते महाभागाः कुतूहलसमन्विताः

nandibhṛṅgivīrabhadravīrabhadragaṇāḥ pṛthak bubhujuste mahābhāgāḥ kutūhalasamanvitāḥ

"Nandi, Bhringi, and Virabhadra with his troops, those most fortunate ones, ate separately, filled with delight and curiosity."

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.115.10)

देवाः सेन्द्रा लोकपाला नानाशोभासमन्विताः । बुभुजुस्ते महाभागा नानाहास्यरसैस्सह

devāḥ sendrā lokapālā nānāśobhāsamanvitāḥ bubhujuste mahābhāgā nānāhāsyarasaissaha

"The gods together with Indra, and the guardians of the world, adorned with manifold splendor, ate amid much laughter and joy."

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.115.11)

सर्वे च मुनयो विप्रा भृग्वाद्या ऋषयस्तथा । बुभुजुः प्रीतितः सर्वे पृथक् पङ्क्तिगतास्तदा

sarve ca munayo viprā bhṛgvādyā ṛṣayastathā bubhujuḥ prītitaḥ sarve pṛthak paṅktigatāstadā

"All the sages and brahmins, Bhrigu and the other seers, ate joyfully there, each seated in their own row."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.115.12)

तथा चण्डीगणाः सर्वे बुभुजुः कृतभोजनाः । कुतूहलं प्रकुर्वन्तो नानाहास्यकरा मुदा

tathā caṇḍīgaṇāḥ sarve bubhujuḥ kṛtabhojanāḥ kutūhalaṁ prakurvanto nānāhāsyakarā mudā

"Likewise all of Chandi's attendants ate their meal, joyfully creating merriment amid much laughter."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.115.13)

एवं ते भुक्तवन्तश्चाचम्य सर्वे मुदान्विताः । विश्रामार्थं गताः प्रीत्या विष्ण्वाद्याः स्वं स्वमाश्रमम्

evaṁ te bhuktavantaścācamya sarve mudānvitāḥ viśrāmārthaṁ gatāḥ prītyā viṣṇvādyāḥ svaṁ svamāśramam

"Thus, having eaten and rinsed their mouths, all of them, joyful, Vishnu and the rest, lovingly went each to his own lodging to rest."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.115.14)

मेनाज्ञया स्त्रियः साध्व्यः शिवं सम्प्रार्थ्य भक्तितः । गेहे निवासयामासुर्वासाख्ये परमोत्सवे

menājñayā striyaḥ sādhvyaḥ śivaṁ samprārthya bhaktitaḥ gehe nivāsayāmāsurvāsākhye paramotsave

"By Mena's order, the virtuous women, devotedly entreating Shiva, lodged him in the house for the great festival called the retirement to the bridal chamber."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.115.15)

रत्नसिंहासने शम्भुः मेनादत्ते मनोहरे । सन्निधाय मुदा युक्तो ददृशे वासमन्दिरम्

ratnasiṁhāsane śambhuḥ menādatte manohare sannidhāya mudā yukto dadṛśe vāsamandiram

"Shambhu, seated with joy upon the beautiful jeweled throne given by Mena, beheld the bridal chamber."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.115.16)

रत्नप्रदीपशतकैर्ज्वलद्भिर्ज्वलितं श्रिया । रत्नपात्रघटाकीर्णं मुक्तामणिविराजितम्

ratnapradīpaśatakairjvaladbhirjvalitaṁ śriyā ratnapātraghaṭākīrṇaṁ muktāmaṇivirājitam

"It blazed with splendor from hundreds of glowing jeweled lamps, was filled with jeweled vessels and pitchers, and resplendent with pearls and gems."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.115.17)

रत्नदर्पणशोभाढ्यं मण्डितं श्वेतचामरैः । मुक्तामणिसुमालाभिर्वेष्टितं परमर्द्धिमत्

ratnadarpaṇaśobhāḍhyaṁ maṇḍitaṁ śvetacāmaraiḥ muktāmaṇisumālābhirveṣṭitaṁ paramarddhimat

"It was rich with the splendor of jeweled mirrors, adorned with white chowries, wreathed with fine garlands of pearls, and possessed of the greatest opulence."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.115.18)

अनौपम्यं महादिव्यं विचित्रं सुमनोहरम् । चित्ताह्लादकरं नानारचनारचितस्थलम्

anaupamyaṁ mahādivyaṁ vicitraṁ sumanoharam cittāhlādakaraṁ nānāracanāracitasthalam

"Incomparable, greatly divine, wondrous, most enchanting, delighting the mind, it was a place fashioned with manifold designs."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.115.19)

शिवदत्तवरस्यैव प्रभावमतुलं परम् । दर्शयन्तं समुल्लासि शिवलोकाभिधानकम्

śivadattavarasyaiva prabhāvamatulaṁ param darśayantaṁ samullāsi śivalokābhidhānakam

"It displayed the matchless, supreme power of the very boon given by Shiva, radiant, known by the name of Shiva's own world."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.115.20)

नानासुगन्धसद्द्रव्यैर्वासितं सुप्रकाशकम् । चन्दनागरुसंयुक्तं पुष्पशय्यासमन्वितम्

nānāsugandhasaddravyairvāsitaṁ suprakāśakam candanāgarusaṁyuktaṁ puṣpaśayyāsamanvitam

"It was perfumed with manifold fine, fragrant substances, brightly lit, fitted with sandal and aloe wood, and furnished with a bed of flowers."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.115.21)

नानाचित्रविचित्राढ्यं निर्मितं विश्वकर्मणा । रत्नेन्द्रसाररचितैराचितं हारकैर्वरैः

nānācitravicitrāḍhyaṁ nirmitaṁ viśvakarmaṇā ratnendrasāraracitairācitaṁ hārakairvaraiḥ

"Rich with manifold wondrous paintings fashioned by Vishwakarma, it was filled with fine garlands made from the very essence of the best jewels."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.115.22)

कुत्रचित्सुरनिर्माणं वैकुण्ठं सुमनोहरम् । कुत्रचिच्च ब्रह्मलोकं लोकपालपुरं क्वचित्

kutracitsuranirmāṇaṁ vaikuṇṭhaṁ sumanoharam kutracicca brahmalokaṁ lokapālapuraṁ kvacit

"In one place was depicted the divine creation Vaikuntha, most enchanting; in another, Brahmaloka; and elsewhere, the cities of the guardians of the world."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.115.23)

कैलासं कुत्रचिद्रम्यं कुत्रचिच्छक्रमन्दिरम् । कुत्रचिच्छिवलोकं च सर्वोपरि विराजितम्

kailāsaṁ kutracidramyaṁ kutracicchakramandiram kutracicchivalokaṁ ca sarvopari virājitam

"In one place, the delightful Kailasa; in another, Indra's palace; and in another, Shivaloka, shining above all."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.115.24)

एतादृशं गृहं सर्वं दृष्ट्वाश्चर्यं महेश्वरः । प्रशंसन् हिमशैलेशं परितुष्टो बभूव ह

etādṛśaṁ gṛhaṁ sarvaṁ dṛṣṭvāścaryaṁ maheśvaraḥ praśaṁsan himaśaileśaṁ parituṣṭo babhūva ha

"Seeing this whole marvelous house, the Great Lord, filled with wonder, was greatly pleased and praised the Lord of the Snowy Mountain."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.115.25)

तत्रातिरमणीये च रत्नपर्यङ्क उत्तमे । अशयिष्ट मुदा युक्तो लीलया परमेश्वरः

tatrātiramaṇīye ca ratnaparyaṅka uttame aśayiṣṭa mudā yukto līlayā parameśvaraḥ

"There, on that most delightful, excellent jeweled couch, the Supreme Lord, filled with joy, lay down in his divine play."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.115.26)

हिमाचलश्च स्वभ्रातॄन्भोजयामास कृत्स्नशः । सर्वानन्यांश्च सुप्रीत्या शेषकृत्यं चकार ह

himācalaśca svabhrātṝnbhojayāmāsa kṛtsnaśaḥ sarvānanyāṁśca suprītyā śeṣakṛtyaṁ cakāra ha

"Himachala fed all his brothers, and all the others too, with great affection, and performed the remaining rites."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.115.27)

एवं कुर्वति शैलेशे स्वपिति प्रेष्ठ ईश्वरे । व्यतीता रजनी सर्वा प्रातःकालो बभूव ह

evaṁ kurvati śaileśe svapiti preṣṭha īśvare vyatītā rajanī sarvā prātaḥkālo babhūva ha

"While the Lord of the mountain was thus occupied, and the beloved Lord slept, the whole night passed, and morning came."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.115.28)

अथ प्रभातकाले च धृत्युत्साहपरायणाः । नानाप्रकारवाद्यानि वादयाञ्चक्रिरे जनाः

atha prabhātakāle ca dhṛtyutsāhaparāyaṇāḥ nānāprakāravādyāni vādayāñcakrire janāḥ

"Then, at the time of dawn, the people, full of enthusiasm and resolve, played manifold kinds of instruments."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.115.29)

सर्वे सुराःसमुत्तस्थुर्विष्ण्वाद्याः सुमुदान्विताः । स्वेष्टं संस्मृत्य देवेशं सज्जीभूताः ससम्भ्रमाः

sarve surāḥsamuttasthurviṣṇvādyāḥ sumudānvitāḥ sveṣṭaṁ saṁsmṛtya deveśaṁ sajjībhūtāḥ sasambhramāḥ

"All the gods, Vishnu and the rest, rose up, filled with joy; remembering their chosen Lord, they made themselves ready in haste."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.115.30)

स्ववाहनानि सज्जानि कैलासं गन्तुमुत्सुकाः । कृत्वा सम्प्रेषयामासुर्धर्मं शिवसमीपतः

svavāhanāni sajjāni kailāsaṁ gantumutsukāḥ kṛtvā sampreṣayāmāsurdharmaṁ śivasamīpataḥ

"Eager to go to Kailasa, having readied their own vehicles, they sent Dharma to Shiva's presence."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.115.31)

वासगेहमथागत्य धर्मो नारायणाज्ञया । उवाच शङ्करं योगी योगीशं समयोचितम्

vāsagehamathāgatya dharmo nārāyaṇājñayā uvāca śaṅkaraṁ yogī yogīśaṁ samayocitam

"Then Dharma, coming to the bridal chamber by Narayana's command, being a yogi himself, spoke to Shankara, lord of yogis, words fitting the occasion."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.115.32)

धर्म उवाच । उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ भद्रं ते भव नः प्रमथाधिप । जनावासं समागच्छ कृतार्थं कुरु तत्र तान्

dharma uvāca uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha bhadraṁ te bhava naḥ pramathādhipa janāvāsaṁ samāgaccha kṛtārthaṁ kuru tatra tān

Dharma said: "Arise, arise, good fortune to you, O lord of the Pramathas; come to the guest-lodging, and make those there fulfilled."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.115.33)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इति धर्मवचः श्रुत्वा विजहास महेश्वरः । ददर्श कृपया दृष्ट्या तल्पमुज्झाञ्चकार ह

brahmovāca iti dharmavacaḥ śrutvā vijahāsa maheśvaraḥ dadarśa kṛpayā dṛṣṭyā talpamujjhāñcakāra ha

Brahma said: "Hearing Dharma's words, the Great Lord laughed, cast upon him a glance of grace, and rose from the bed."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.115.34)

उवाच विहसन् धर्मं त्वमग्रे गच्छ तत्र ह । अहमप्यागमिष्यामि द्रुतमेव न संशयः

uvāca vihasan dharmaṁ tvamagre gaccha tatra ha ahamapyāgamiṣyāmi drutameva na saṁśayaḥ

"Smiling, he said to Dharma, 'You go on ahead there; I too shall come quickly, without doubt.'"

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.115.35)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्तः शङ्करेणाथ जनावासं जगाम सः । स्वयं गन्तुमना आसीत्तत्र शम्भुरपि प्रभुः

brahmovāca ityuktaḥ śaṅkareṇātha janāvāsaṁ jagāma saḥ svayaṁ gantumanā āsīttatra śambhurapi prabhuḥ

Brahma said: "Thus told by Shankara, Dharma went to the guest-lodging; and Shambhu, the Lord, was himself also minded to go there."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.115.36)

तज्ज्ञात्वा स्त्रीगणः सोऽसौ तत्रागच्छन्महोत्सवः । चक्रे मङ्गलगानं हि पश्यन् शम्भुपदद्वयम्

tajjñātvā strīgaṇaḥ so'sau tatrāgacchanmahotsavaḥ cakre maṅgalagānaṁ hi paśyan śambhupadadvayam

"Knowing this, the group of women too came there for the great festival, singing auspicious songs while gazing upon Shambhu's two feet."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.115.37)

अथ शम्भुर्भवाचारी प्रातःकृत्यं विधाय च । मेनामामन्त्र्य कुध्रं च जनावासं जगाम सः

atha śambhurbhavācārī prātaḥkṛtyaṁ vidhāya ca menāmāmantrya kudhraṁ ca janāvāsaṁ jagāma saḥ

"Then Shambhu, observing worldly custom, having performed his morning rites, took leave of Mena and the Mountain, and went to the guest-lodging."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.115.38)

महोत्सवस्तदा चासीद्वेदध्वनिरभून्मुने । वाद्यानि वादयामासुर्जनाश्चातुर्विधानि च

mahotsavastadā cāsīdvedadhvanirabhūnmune vādyāni vādayāmāsurjanāścāturvidhāni ca

"Then, O sage, there was a great festival and the sound of Vedic chanting; the people played instruments of the four kinds."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.115.39)

शम्भुरागत्य स्वस्थानं ववन्दे च मुनींस्तदा । हरिं च मां भवाचारात् वन्दितोऽभूत्सुरादिभिः

śambhurāgatya svasthānaṁ vavande ca munīṁstadā hariṁ ca māṁ bhavācārāt vandito'bhūtsurādibhiḥ

"Shambhu, arriving at his own place, then paid homage to the sages, and to Hari and me too; and by worldly custom he was in turn honored by the gods and others."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.115.40)

जयशब्दो बभूवाथ नमः शब्दस्तथैव च । वेदध्वनिश्च शुभदो महाकोलाहलोऽभवत्

jayaśabdo babhūvātha namaḥ śabdastathaiva ca vedadhvaniśca śubhado mahākolāhalo'bhavat

"Then there arose shouts of victory and of homage, and the auspicious sound of the Vedas, and a mighty uproar of joy."
