The Departure of Shiva

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.116.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । अथ विष्ण्वादयो देवा मुनयश्च तपोधनाः । कृत्वावश्यककर्माणि यात्रां सन्तेनिरे गिरेः

brahmovāca atha viṣṇvādayo devā munayaśca tapodhanāḥ kṛtvāvaśyakakarmāṇi yātrāṁ santenire gireḥ

Brahma said: "Then Vishnu and the other gods, and the sages rich in austerity, having performed their necessary duties, prepared for departure from the Mountain."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.116.2)

ततो गिरिवरः स्नात्वा स्वेष्टं सम्पूज्य यत्नतः । पौरबन्धून्समाहूय जनवासं ययौ मुदा

tato girivaraḥ snātvā sveṣṭaṁ sampūjya yatnataḥ paurabandhūnsamāhūya janavāsaṁ yayau mudā

"Then the excellent Mountain, having bathed and diligently worshipped his chosen deity, summoned the townsfolk and kinsmen, and joyfully went to the guest-lodging."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.116.3)

तत्र प्रभुं प्रपूज्याथ चक्रे सम्प्रार्थनां मुदा । कियद्दिनानि सन्तिष्ठ मद्गेहे सकलैः सह

tatra prabhuṁ prapūjyātha cakre samprārthanāṁ mudā kiyaddināni santiṣṭha madgehe sakalaiḥ saha

"There, having worshipped the Lord, he joyfully made this request: 'Remain some days in my house, together with all of them.'"

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.116.4)

विलोकनेन ते शम्भो कृतार्थोऽहं न संशयः । धन्यश्च यस्य मद्गेहे आयातोऽसि सुरैः सह

vilokanena te śambho kṛtārtho'haṁ na saṁśayaḥ dhanyaśca yasya madgehe āyāto'si suraiḥ saha

"'By the sight of you, O Shambhu, I am fulfilled, without doubt; blessed am I, in whose house you have come together with the gods.'"

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.116.5)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्त्वा बहु शैलेशः करौ बद्ध्वा प्रणम्य च । प्रभुं निमन्त्रयामास सह विष्णुसुरादिभिः

brahmovāca ityuktvā bahu śaileśaḥ karau baddhvā praṇamya ca prabhuṁ nimantrayāmāsa saha viṣṇusurādibhiḥ

Brahma said: "Having spoken thus at length, the Lord of the Mountain, folding his hands and bowing, invited the Lord, together with Vishnu and the other gods."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.116.6)

अथ ते मनसा गत्वा शिव संयुतमादरात् । प्रत्यूचुर्मुनयो देवा हृष्टा विष्णुसुरादिभिः

atha te manasā gatvā śiva saṁyutamādarāt pratyūcurmunayo devā hṛṣṭā viṣṇusurādibhiḥ

"Then, receiving that reverent invitation joined with Shiva's presence, the sages and gods, joyful, together with Vishnu and the others, replied."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.116.7)

देवा ऊचुः । धन्यस्त्वं गिरिशार्दूल तव कीर्तिर्महीयसी । त्वत्समो न त्रिलोकेषु कोऽपि पुण्यतमो जनः

devā ūcuḥ dhanyastvaṁ giriśārdūla tava kīrtirmahīyasī tvatsamo na trilokeṣu ko'pi puṇyatamo janaḥ

The gods said: "Blessed are you, O tiger among mountains! Your fame is exceedingly great; in the three worlds there is no one of greater merit than you."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.116.8)

यस्य द्वारि महेशानः परब्रह्म सतां गतिः । समागतः सदासैश्च कृपया भक्तवत्सलः

yasya dvāri maheśānaḥ parabrahma satāṁ gatiḥ samāgataḥ sadāsaiśca kṛpayā bhaktavatsalaḥ

"— at whose door the Great Lord, the Supreme Brahman, the refuge of the virtuous, cherisher of his devotees, has come with his hosts, out of compassion."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.116.9)

जनावासोऽतिरम्यश्च सम्मानो विविधः कृतः । भोजनानि त्वपूर्वाणि न वर्ण्यानि गिरीश्वर

janāvāso'tiramyaśca sammāno vividhaḥ kṛtaḥ bhojanāni tvapūrvāṇi na varṇyāni girīśvara

"The guest-lodging is most delightful, manifold honors have been given, and the feast, O Lord of mountains, was unprecedented, beyond description."

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.116.10)

चित्रं न खलु तत्रास्ति यत्र देवी शिवाम्बिका । परिपूर्णमशेषं च वयं धन्या यदागताः

citraṁ na khalu tatrāsti yatra devī śivāmbikā paripūrṇamaśeṣaṁ ca vayaṁ dhanyā yadāgatāḥ

"It is no wonder, since the Goddess Shivāmbikā dwells there — everything is entirely complete, and we are blessed to have come."

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.116.11)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्थं परस्परं तत्र प्रशंसाभवदुत्तमा । उत्सवो विविधो जातो वेदसाधुजयध्वनिः

brahmovāca itthaṁ parasparaṁ tatra praśaṁsābhavaduttamā utsavo vividho jāto vedasādhujayadhvaniḥ

Brahma said: "Thus there arose mutual praise of the finest kind, and manifold celebration, with the sounds of Vedic chanting, cries of approval, and shouts of victory."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.116.12)

अभून्मङ्गलगानं च ननर्ताप्सरसाङ्गणः । नुतिं चक्रुर्मागधाद्या द्रव्यदानमभूद् बहु

abhūnmaṅgalagānaṁ ca nanartāpsarasāṅgaṇaḥ nutiṁ cakrurmāgadhādyā dravyadānamabhūd bahu

"There was auspicious singing, the courtyard danced with apsaras, the court bards and others offered eulogies, and abundant gifts of wealth were given."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.116.13)

तत आमन्त्रय देवेशं स्वगेहमगमद्गिरिः । भोजनोत्सवमारेभे नानाविधिविधानतः

tata āmantraya deveśaṁ svagehamagamadgiriḥ bhojanotsavamārebhe nānāvidhividhānataḥ

"Then, having taken leave of the Lord of gods, the Mountain went to his own house and began a feast-festival with manifold rites and observances."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.116.14)

भोजनार्थं प्रभुं प्रीत्यानयामास यथोचितम् । परिवारसमेतं च सकुतूहलमीश्वरम्

bhojanārthaṁ prabhuṁ prītyānayāmāsa yathocitam parivārasametaṁ ca sakutūhalamīśvaram

"He lovingly and fittingly brought the Lord, together with his retinue, to the feast, delighted himself."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.116.15)

प्रक्षाल्य चरणौ शम्भोर्विष्णोर्मम वरादरात् । सर्वेषाममराणां च मुनीनां च यथार्थतः

prakṣālya caraṇau śambhorviṣṇormama varādarāt sarveṣāmamarāṇāṁ ca munīnāṁ ca yathārthataḥ

"Reverently, in the proper manner, he washed the feet of Shambhu, of Vishnu, of me, and of all the immortals and sages."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.116.16)

परेषां च गतानां च गिरीशो मण्डपान्तरे । आसयामास सुप्रीत्या तांस्तान्बन्धुभिरन्वितः

pareṣāṁ ca gatānāṁ ca girīśo maṇḍapāntare āsayāmāsa suprītyā tāṁstānbandhubhiranvitaḥ

"The Lord of the mountain, together with his kinsmen, lovingly seated all the others who had come, within the pavilion."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.116.17)

सुरसैर्विविधान्नैश्च तर्पयामास तान् गिरिः । बुभुजुर्निखिलास्ते वै शम्भुना विष्णुना मया

surasairvividhānnaiśca tarpayāmāsa tān giriḥ bubhujurnikhilāste vai śambhunā viṣṇunā mayā

"The Mountain satisfied them with manifold savory foods; all of them ate, together with Shambhu, Vishnu, and myself."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.116.18)

तदानीं पुरनार्यश्च गालीदानं व्यधुर्मुदा । मृदुवाण्या हसन्त्यश्च पश्यन्त्यो यत्नतश्च तान्

tadānīṁ puranāryaśca gālīdānaṁ vyadhurmudā mṛduvāṇyā hasantyaśca paśyantyo yatnataśca tān

"Then the women of the city playfully offered teasing banter, laughing with gentle words as they carefully watched them."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.116.19)

ते भुक्त्वाचम्य विधिवद्गिरिमामन्त्र्य नारद । स्वस्थानं प्रययुः सर्वे मुदितास्तृप्तिमागताः

te bhuktvācamya vidhivadgirimāmantrya nārada svasthānaṁ prayayuḥ sarve muditāstṛptimāgatāḥ

"Having eaten, rinsed their mouths duly, O Narada, and taken leave of the Mountain, they all went, joyful and satisfied, to their own places."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.116.20)

इत्थं तृतीये घस्त्रेऽपि मानितास्तेऽभवन्मुने । गिरीश्वरेण विधिवद्दानमानादरादिभिः

itthaṁ tṛtīye ghastre'pi mānitāste'bhavanmune girīśvareṇa vidhivaddānamānādarādibhiḥ

"Thus, O sage, on the third day too, they were honored by the Lord of the mountain, duly, with gifts, respect, and reverence."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.116.21)

चतुर्थे दिवसे प्राप्ते चतुर्थीकर्म शुद्धितः । बभूव विधिवद्येन विना खण्डित एव सः

caturthe divase prāpte caturthīkarma śuddhitaḥ babhūva vidhivadyena vinā khaṇḍita eva saḥ

"When the fourth day came, the fourth-day rite was duly performed with purification, without which the ceremony would remain incomplete."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.116.22)

उत्सवो विविधश्चासीत्साधुवादजयध्वनिः । बहुदानं सुगानं च नर्तनं विविधं तथा

utsavo vividhaścāsītsādhuvādajayadhvaniḥ bahudānaṁ sugānaṁ ca nartanaṁ vividhaṁ tathā

"There was manifold celebration, cries of approval and victory, abundant gifts, fine singing, and various kinds of dancing."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.116.23)

पञ्चमे दिवसे प्राप्ते सर्वे देवा मुदान्विताः । विज्ञप्तिं चक्रिरे शैलं यात्रार्थमतिप्रेमतः

pañcame divase prāpte sarve devā mudānvitāḥ vijñaptiṁ cakrire śailaṁ yātrārthamatipremataḥ

"When the fifth day came, all the gods, filled with joy, with great affection made their request to the Mountain concerning their departure."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.116.24)

तदाकर्ण्य गिरीशश्चोवाच देवान् कृताञ्जलिः । कियद्दिनानि तिष्ठन्तु कृपां कुर्वन्तु मां सुराः

tadākarṇya girīśaścovāca devān kṛtāñjaliḥ kiyaddināni tiṣṭhantu kṛpāṁ kurvantu māṁ surāḥ

"Hearing this, the Lord of the mountain, with joined palms, said to the gods: 'Remain some days more; show me your kindness, O gods.'"

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.116.25)

इत्युक्त्वा स्नेहतस्ताँश्च प्रभुं विष्णुं च मां परान् । वासयामास दिवसान् बहून्नित्यं समादरात्

ityuktvā snehatastā~śca prabhuṁ viṣṇuṁ ca māṁ parān vāsayāmāsa divasān bahūnnityaṁ samādarāt

"Having said this, out of affection, he kept the Lord, Vishnu, myself, and the others there for many days, daily with due honor."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.116.26)

इत्थं व्यतीयुर्दिवसा बहवो वसतां च तत् । सप्तर्षीन्प्रेषयामासुर्गिरीशान्ते ततः सुराः

itthaṁ vyatīyurdivasā bahavo vasatāṁ ca tat saptarṣīnpreṣayāmāsurgirīśānte tataḥ surāḥ

"Thus many days passed while they stayed there; then the gods sent the Seven Sages to the presence of the Lord of the mountain."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.116.27)

ते तं सम्बोधयामासुर्मेनां च समयोचितम् । शिवतत्त्वं परं प्रोचुः प्रशंसन्विधिवन्मुदा

te taṁ sambodhayāmāsurmenāṁ ca samayocitam śivatattvaṁ paraṁ procuḥ praśaṁsanvidhivanmudā

"O sage, they counseled him and Mena, according to the occasion, and joyfully, duly, expounded and praised the supreme truth of Shiva."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.116.28)

अङ्गीकृतं गिरीशेन तत्तद्बोधनतो मुने । यात्रार्थमगमच्छम्भुः शैलेशं सामरादिकः

aṅgīkṛtaṁ girīśena tattadbodhanato mune yātrārthamagamacchambhuḥ śaileśaṁ sāmarādikaḥ

"Through their counsel the Lord of the mountain agreed; and then Shambhu, together with the gods, went to the Lord of the mountain regarding the departure."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.116.29)

यात्रां कुर्वति देवेशे स्वशैलं सामरे शिवे । उच्चैः रुदोद सा मेना तमुवाच कृपानिधिम्

yātrāṁ kurvati deveśe svaśailaṁ sāmare śive uccaiḥ rudoda sā menā tamuvāca kṛpānidhim

"As the Lord of gods, Shiva, together with the gods, was preparing to depart to his own mountain, Mena wept aloud and spoke to that treasury of compassion."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.116.30)

मेनोवाच । कृपानिधे कृपां कृत्वा शिवां सम्पालयिष्यसि । सहस्रदोषं पार्वत्या आशुतोषः क्षमिष्यसि

menovāca kṛpānidhe kṛpāṁ kṛtvā śivāṁ sampālayiṣyasi sahasradoṣaṁ pārvatyā āśutoṣaḥ kṣamiṣyasi

Mena said: "O treasury of compassion, showing your mercy, you will fully protect Shivā; and, quick to be pleased, you will forgive Parvati's thousand faults."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.116.31)

त्वत्पादाम्बुजभक्ता च मद्वत्सा जन्मजन्मनि । स्वप्ने ज्ञाने स्मृतिर्नास्ति महादेवं प्रभुं विना

tvatpādāmbujabhaktā ca madvatsā janmajanmani svapne jñāne smṛtirnāsti mahādevaṁ prabhuṁ vinā

"My daughter is devoted to your lotus feet, birth after birth; in dream or in waking, she has no memory of anything but Lord Mahadeva."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.116.32)

त्वद्भक्तिश्रुतिमात्रेण हर्षाश्रुपुलकान्विता । त्वन्निन्दया भवेन्मौना मृत्युञ्जय मृता इव

tvadbhaktiśrutimātreṇa harṣāśrupulakānvitā tvannindayā bhavenmaunā mṛtyuñjaya mṛtā iva

"At the mere hearing of devotion to you, she is filled with tears of joy and horripilation; and at any slander of you, O Conqueror of Death, she falls silent, as if dead."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.116.33)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्त्वा मेनका तस्मै समर्प्य स्वसुतां तदा । अत्युच्चै रोदनं कृत्वा मूर्च्छामाप तयोः पुरः

brahmovāca ityuktvā menakā tasmai samarpya svasutāṁ tadā atyuccai rodanaṁ kṛtvā mūrcchāmāpa tayoḥ puraḥ

Brahma said: "Having said this, Menaka, entrusting her own daughter to him, wept exceedingly loudly and fell into a swoon before the two of them."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.116.34)

अथ मेनां बोधयित्वा तामामन्त्र्य गिरिं तथा । चकार यात्रां देवैश्च महोत्सवपुरस्सरम्

atha menāṁ bodhayitvā tāmāmantrya giriṁ tathā cakāra yātrāṁ devaiśca mahotsavapurassaram

"Then, having comforted Mena and taken leave of her and of the Mountain, he set out on his departure together with the gods, amid a great festival."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.116.35)

अथ ते निर्जराः सर्वे प्रभुणा स्वगणैः सह । यात्रां प्रचक्रिरे तूष्णीं गिरिम्प्रति शिवं दधुः

atha te nirjarāḥ sarve prabhuṇā svagaṇaiḥ saha yātrāṁ pracakrire tūṣṇīṁ girimprati śivaṁ dadhuḥ

"Then all those immortals, together with the Lord and their own attendant hosts, set out silently on the journey, bearing Shiva toward his mountain."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.116.36)

हिमाचलपुरीबाह्योपवने हर्षिताः सुराः । सेश्वराः सोत्सवास्तस्थुः पर्यैषन्त शिवागमम्

himācalapurībāhyopavane harṣitāḥ surāḥ seśvarāḥ sotsavāstasthuḥ paryaiṣanta śivāgamam

"In the grove outside Himachala's city, the joyful gods, together with the Lord, festively remained, awaiting Shiva's arrival."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.116.37)

इत्युक्ता शिवसद्यात्रा देवैस्सह मुनीश्वर । आकर्णय शिवयात्रां विरहोत्सवसंयुताम्

ityuktā śivasadyātrā devaissaha munīśvara ākarṇaya śivayātrāṁ virahotsavasaṁyutām

"Thus, O lord of sages, has been told Shiva's departure together with the gods; now hear of Shiva's further journey, joined with the sorrow of parting."
