Shiva's Going to Kailasa

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.118.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । अथ सा ब्राह्मणी देव्यै शिक्षयित्वा व्रतं च तत् । प्रोवाच मेनामामन्त्र्य यात्रामस्याश्च कारय

brahmovāca atha sā brāhmaṇī devyai śikṣayitvā vrataṁ ca tat provāca menāmāmantrya yātrāmasyāśca kāraya

Brahma said: "Then that brahmin woman, having instructed the Goddess in that vow, took leave and said to Mena: 'Now arrange her departure.'"

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.118.2)

तथास्त्विति च सम्प्रोच्य प्रेमवश्या बभूव सा । धृतिं धृत्वाहूय कालीं विश्लेषविरहाकुला

tathāstviti ca samprocya premavaśyā babhūva sā dhṛtiṁ dhṛtvāhūya kālīṁ viśleṣavirahākulā

"Saying 'So be it,' Mena, overcome by love, summoned Kali, gathering her composure though distressed by the coming separation."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.118.3)

अत्युच्चै रोदनं चक्रे संश्लिष्य च पुनः पुनः । पार्वत्यपि रुरोदोच्चैरुच्चरन्ती कृपावचः

atyuccai rodanaṁ cakre saṁśliṣya ca punaḥ punaḥ pārvatyapi rurodoccairuccarantī kṛpāvacaḥ

"She wept exceedingly loudly, embracing her again and again; Parvati too wept aloud, uttering words that stirred pity."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.118.4)

शैलप्रिया शिवा चापि मूर्च्छामाप शुचार्दिता । मूर्च्छाम्प्रापुर्देवपत्न्यः पार्वत्या रोदनेन च

śailapriyā śivā cāpi mūrcchāmāpa śucārditā mūrcchāmprāpurdevapatnyaḥ pārvatyā rodanena ca

"Shiva, the beloved of the Mountain, overwhelmed by grief, fell into a swoon; and the wives of the gods too fell into a swoon at Parvati's weeping."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.118.5)

सर्वाश्च रुरुदुर्नार्यः सर्वमासीदचेतनम् । स्वयं रुरोद योगीशो गच्छन्कोऽन्य परः प्रभुः

sarvāśca rurudurnāryaḥ sarvamāsīdacetanam svayaṁ ruroda yogīśo gacchanko'nya paraḥ prabhuḥ

"All the women wept, and everything became as if lifeless; the lord of yogis himself wept as he was leaving -- what other supreme lord would not weep at such a parting?"

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.118.6)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे शीघ्रमाजगाम हिमालयः । स सर्वतनयैस्तत्र सचिवैश्च द्विजैः परैः

etasminnantare śīghramājagāma himālayaḥ sa sarvatanayaistatra sacivaiśca dvijaiḥ paraiḥ

"Meanwhile, Himalaya quickly arrived there, together with all his sons, his ministers, brahmins, and others."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.118.7)

स्वयं रुरोद मोहेन वत्सां कृत्वा स्ववक्षसि । क्व यासीत्येवमुच्चार्य शून्यं कृत्वा मुहुर्मुहुः

svayaṁ ruroda mohena vatsāṁ kṛtvā svavakṣasi kva yāsītyevamuccārya śūnyaṁ kṛtvā muhurmuhuḥ

"He himself wept, overcome with attachment, clasping his daughter to his breast, crying out again and again, 'Where are you going?' -- his heart made empty."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.118.8)

ततः पुरोहितो विप्रैरध्यात्मविद्यया सुखम् । सर्वान्प्रबोधयामास कृपया ज्ञानवत्तरः

tataḥ purohito viprairadhyātmavidyayā sukham sarvānprabodhayāmāsa kṛpayā jñānavattaraḥ

"Then the family priest, together with the brahmins, being learned in spiritual wisdom, comforted everyone with the knowledge of the higher self, out of compassion."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.118.9)

ननाम पार्वती भक्त्या मातरं पितरं गुरुम् । महामाया भवाचाराद्रुरोदोच्चैर्मुहुर्मुहुः

nanāma pārvatī bhaktyā mātaraṁ pitaraṁ gurum mahāmāyā bhavācārādrurodoccairmuhurmuhuḥ

"Parvati, the Great Maya, bowed devotedly to her mother, her father, and her elders; and, in observance of worldly custom, wept aloud again and again."

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.118.10)

पार्वत्या रोदनेनैव रुरुदुः सर्वयोषितः । नितरां जननी मेना यामयो भ्रातरस्तथा

pārvatyā rodanenaiva ruruduḥ sarvayoṣitaḥ nitarāṁ jananī menā yāmayo bhrātarastathā

"At Parvati's very weeping, all the women wept; her mother Mena wept exceedingly, as did her sisters-in-law and brothers."

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.118.11)

पुनः पुनः शिवामाता यामयोऽन्याश्च योषितः । भ्रातरो जनकः प्रेम्णा रुरुदुर्बद्धसौहृदाः

punaḥ punaḥ śivāmātā yāmayo'nyāśca yoṣitaḥ bhrātaro janakaḥ premṇā rurudurbaddhasauhṛdāḥ

"Again and again Shiva's mother, her sisters-in-law and the other women, her brothers, and her father, bound by deep affection, wept out of love."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.118.12)

तदा विप्राः समागत्य बोधयामासुरादरात् । लग्नं निवेदयामासुर्यात्रायाः सुखदं परम्

tadā viprāḥ samāgatya bodhayāmāsurādarāt lagnaṁ nivedayāmāsuryātrāyāḥ sukhadaṁ param

"Then the brahmins, coming together, reverently comforted them and announced the most auspicious hour for the departure."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.118.13)

ततो हिमालयो मेनां धृत्वा धैर्यं विवेकतः । शिबिकामानयामास शिवारोहणहेतवे

tato himālayo menāṁ dhṛtvā dhairyaṁ vivekataḥ śibikāmānayāmāsa śivārohaṇahetave

"Then Himalaya, holding Mena and himself gathering courage through discernment, brought forth a palanquin for Shiva to mount."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.118.14)

शिवामारोहयामासुस्तत्र विप्राङ्गनाश्च ताम् । आशिषं प्रददुः सर्वाः पिता माता द्विजास्तथा

śivāmārohayāmāsustatra viprāṅganāśca tām āśiṣaṁ pradaduḥ sarvāḥ pitā mātā dvijāstathā

"There the brahmin women helped Shiva mount the palanquin; and all -- her father, her mother, and the brahmins -- gave her their blessings."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.118.15)

महाराज्ञ्युपचाराँश्च ददौ मेना गिरिस्तथा । नानाद्रव्यसमूहं च परेषां दुर्लभं शुभम्

mahārājñyupacārā~śca dadau menā giristathā nānādravyasamūhaṁ ca pareṣāṁ durlabhaṁ śubham

"Mena and the Mountain gave her the honors due to a great queen, and a vast quantity of auspicious goods rare for others to obtain."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.118.16)

शिवा नत्वा गुरून्सर्वान् जनकं जननीं तथा । द्विजान्पुरोहितं यामीस्त्रीस्तथान्या ययौ मुने

śivā natvā gurūnsarvān janakaṁ jananīṁ tathā dvijānpurohitaṁ yāmīstrīstathānyā yayau mune

"O sage, Shiva, having bowed to all her elders, her father and mother, the brahmins, the family priest, her sisters-in-law and the other women, then departed."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.118.17)

हिमाचलोऽपि ससुतोऽगच्छत्स्नेहवशी बुधः । प्राप्तस्तत्र प्रभुर्यत्र सामरः प्रीतिमावहन्

himācalo'pi sasuto'gacchatsnehavaśī budhaḥ prāptastatra prabhuryatra sāmaraḥ prītimāvahan

"Himachala too, wise yet overcome with affection, went along with his sons, to the place where the Lord, together with the gods, waited, bringing joy."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.118.18)

प्रीत्याभिरेभिरे सर्वे महोत्सवपुरस्सरम् । प्रभुं प्रणेमुस्ते भक्त्या प्रशंसन्तोऽविशन्पुरीम्

prītyābhirebhire sarve mahotsavapurassaram prabhuṁ praṇemuste bhaktyā praśaṁsanto'viśanpurīm

"All embraced each other lovingly amid a great festival; they bowed to the Lord with devotion, and, praising him, entered the city."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.118.19)

जातिस्मरां स्मारयामि नित्यं स्मरसि चेद्वद । लीलया त्वां च देवेशि सदा प्राणप्रिया मम

jātismarāṁ smārayāmi nityaṁ smarasi cedvada līlayā tvāṁ ca deveśi sadā prāṇapriyā mama

[Shiva said to Parvati:] "'I remind you, who remember your past births — tell me if you always remember; O Goddess of gods, you who through my divine play are ever dearer to me than life.'"

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.118.20)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य महेशस्य स्वनाथस्याथ पार्वती । शङ्करस्य प्रिया नित्यं सस्मितोवाच सा सती

brahmovāca ityākarṇya maheśasya svanāthasyātha pārvatī śaṅkarasya priyā nityaṁ sasmitovāca sā satī

Brahma said: "Hearing this from Mahesha, her own lord, Parvati, ever the beloved of Shankara, that virtuous one, replied with a smile."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.118.21)

पार्वत्युवाच । सर्वं स्मरामि प्राणेश मौनीभूतो भवेति च । प्रस्तावोचितमद्याशु कार्यं कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते

pārvatyuvāca sarvaṁ smarāmi prāṇeśa maunībhūto bhaveti ca prastāvocitamadyāśu kāryaṁ kuru namo'stu te

Parvati said: "O Lord of my life, I remember everything; be silent now, and do quickly what is fitting to this occasion -- homage to you."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.118.22)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य प्रियावाक्यं सुधाधाराशतोपमम् । मुमुदेऽतीव विश्वेशो लौकिकाचारतत्परः

brahmovāca ityākarṇya priyāvākyaṁ sudhādhārāśatopamam mumude'tīva viśveśo laukikācāratatparaḥ

Brahma said: "Hearing his beloved's words, like a hundred streams of nectar, the Lord of the universe rejoiced greatly, intent on worldly custom."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.118.23)

शिवः सम्भृतसम्भारो नानावस्तुमनोहरम् । भोजयामास देवांश्च नारायणपुरोगमान्

śivaḥ sambhṛtasambhāro nānāvastumanoharam bhojayāmāsa devāṁśca nārāyaṇapurogamān

"Shiva, having gathered manifold enchanting provisions, fed the gods, headed by Narayana."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.118.24)

तथान्यान्निखिलान्प्रीत्या स्वविवाहसमागतान् । भोजयामास सुरसमन्नं बहुविधं प्रभुः

tathānyānnikhilānprītyā svavivāhasamāgatān bhojayāmāsa surasamannaṁ bahuvidhaṁ prabhuḥ

"And likewise, with love, the Lord fed all the others who had come for his wedding, with manifold delicious food."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.118.25)

ततो भुक्त्वा च ते देवा नानारत्नविभूषिताः । सस्त्रीकाः सगणाः सर्वे प्रणेमुश्चन्द्रशेखरम्

tato bhuktvā ca te devā nānāratnavibhūṣitāḥ sastrīkāḥ sagaṇāḥ sarve praṇemuścandraśekharam

"Then, having eaten, those gods, adorned with manifold jewels, together with their wives and attendants, all bowed to Chandrashekhara."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.118.26)

संस्तुत्य वाग्भिरिष्टाभिः परिक्रम्य मुदान्विताः । प्रशंसन्तो विवाहं च स्वधामानि ययुस्ततः

saṁstutya vāgbhiriṣṭābhiḥ parikramya mudānvitāḥ praśaṁsanto vivāhaṁ ca svadhāmāni yayustataḥ

"Having praised him with fitting words and circumambulated him, filled with joy, praising the marriage, they then went to their own abodes."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.118.27)

नारायणं मुने मां च प्रणनाम शिवःस्वयम् । लौकिकाचारमाश्रित्य यथा विष्णुश्च कश्यपम्

nārāyaṇaṁ mune māṁ ca praṇanāma śivaḥsvayam laukikācāramāśritya yathā viṣṇuśca kaśyapam

"O sage, Shiva himself bowed to Narayana and to me, in observance of worldly custom, just as Vishnu once bowed to Kashyapa."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.118.28)

मयाश्लिष्याशिषं दत्त्वा शिवस्य पुनरग्रतः । मत्वा वै तं परं ब्रह्म चक्रे च स्तुतिरुत्तमा

mayāśliṣyāśiṣaṁ dattvā śivasya punaragrataḥ matvā vai taṁ paraṁ brahma cakre ca stutiruttamā

"Embracing him, I gave my blessing; and then, again before Shiva, knowing him to be the Supreme Brahman, Vishnu offered him the finest praise."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.118.29)

तमामन्त्र्य मया विष्णुः साञ्जलिः शिवयोर्मुदा । प्रशंसंस्तद्विवाहं च जगाम स्वालयं परम्

tamāmantrya mayā viṣṇuḥ sāñjaliḥ śivayormudā praśaṁsaṁstadvivāhaṁ ca jagāma svālayaṁ param

"Then Vishnu, taking leave of him and of me, with joined palms and joy, praising the wedding, went to his own supreme abode."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.118.30)

शिवोऽपि स्वगिरौ तस्थौ पार्वत्या विहरन् मुदा । सर्वे गणाः सुखं प्रापुरतीव स्वभजन् शिवौ

śivo'pi svagirau tasthau pārvatyā viharan mudā sarve gaṇāḥ sukhaṁ prāpuratīva svabhajan śivau

"Shiva too remained on his own mountain, sporting joyfully with Parvati; and all his attendant hosts attained great happiness, devotedly serving the divine couple."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.118.31)

इत्येवं कथितस्तात शिवोद्वाहः सुमङ्गलः । शोकघ्नो हर्षजनक आयुष्यो धनवर्द्धनः

ityevaṁ kathitastāta śivodvāhaḥ sumaṅgalaḥ śokaghno harṣajanaka āyuṣyo dhanavarddhanaḥ

"Thus, O son, has been told the most auspicious marriage of Shiva -- a destroyer of sorrow, a giver of joy, bestowing long life and increasing wealth."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.118.32)

य इमं शृणुयान्नित्यं शुचिस्तद्गतमानसः । श्रावयेद्वाथ नियमाच्छिवलोकमवाप्नुयात्

ya imaṁ śṛṇuyānnityaṁ śucistadgatamānasaḥ śrāvayedvātha niyamācchivalokamavāpnuyāt

"Whoever constantly hears this, pure and with mind fixed upon it, or recites it to others with due observance, attains the world of Shiva."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.118.33)

इदमाख्यानमाख्यातमद्भुतं मङ्गलायनम् । सर्वविघ्नप्रशमनं सर्वव्याधिविनाशनम्

idamākhyānamākhyātamadbhutaṁ maṅgalāyanam sarvavighnapraśamanaṁ sarvavyādhivināśanam

"This wondrous narrative, a source of all auspiciousness, has been told; it pacifies every obstacle and destroys every disease."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.118.34)

यशस्यं स्वर्ग्यमायुष्यं पुत्रपौत्रकरं परम् । सर्वकामप्रदं चेह भुक्तिदं मुक्तिदं सदा

yaśasyaṁ svargyamāyuṣyaṁ putrapautrakaraṁ param sarvakāmapradaṁ ceha bhuktidaṁ muktidaṁ sadā

"It brings fame, leads to heaven, grants long life, and above all bestows sons and grandsons; it grants every desire here, and ever gives both worldly enjoyment and liberation."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.118.35)

अपमृत्युप्रशमनं महाशान्तिकरं शुभम् । सर्वदुःस्वप्नशमनं बुद्धिप्रज्ञादिसाधनम्

apamṛtyupraśamanaṁ mahāśāntikaraṁ śubham sarvaduḥsvapnaśamanaṁ buddhiprajñādisādhanam

"It wards off untimely death, brings great peace and auspiciousness, dispels all evil dreams, and is a means to intellect, wisdom, and the like."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.118.36)

शिवोत्सवेषु सर्वेषु पठितव्यं प्रयत्नतः । शुभेप्सुभिर्जनैः प्रीत्या शिवसन्तोषकारणम्

śivotsaveṣu sarveṣu paṭhitavyaṁ prayatnataḥ śubhepsubhirjanaiḥ prītyā śivasantoṣakāraṇam

"It should be diligently recited at all festivals of Shiva by people who desire good fortune, lovingly, as a cause of Shiva's satisfaction."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.118.37)

पठेत्प्रतिष्ठाकाले तु देवादीनां विशेषतः । शिवस्य सर्वकार्यस्य प्रारम्भे च सुप्रीतितः

paṭhetpratiṣṭhākāle tu devādīnāṁ viśeṣataḥ śivasya sarvakāryasya prārambhe ca suprītitaḥ

"It should be recited especially at the time of the consecration of deities, and, with great love, at the beginning of every undertaking connected with Shiva."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.118.38)

शृणुयाद्वा शुचिर्भूत्वा चरितं शिवयोश्शिवम् । सिध्यन्ति सर्वकार्याणि सत्यं सत्यं न संशयः

śṛṇuyādvā śucirbhūtvā caritaṁ śivayośśivam sidhyanti sarvakāryāṇi satyaṁ satyaṁ na saṁśayaḥ

"Or let one, having become pure, listen to this auspicious story of Shiva and Shivā -- all undertakings will surely succeed; this is true, true, without doubt."
