Rudra Samhita · Chapter 119

The Gods, Afflicted by Taraka, Voice Their Sorrow Before Shankara

Chapter 118All chaptersChapter 120

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.119.1)

vande vandanatuṣṭamānasamatipremapriyaṁ premadaṁ pūrṇaṁ pūrṇakaraṁ prapūrṇanikhilaiśvaryaikavāsaṁ śivam satyaṁ satyamayaṁ trisatyavibhavaṁ satyapriyaṁ satyadaṁ viṣṇubrahmanutaṁ svakīyakṛpayopāttākṛtiṁ śaṅkaram

I bow to Shiva, whose mind is gladdened by worship, who is dear through deepest love and who bestows love; who is complete, who makes others whole, who is the sole abode of the fullness of all majesty; who is truth, composed of truth, whose splendor is true in all three times, who is fond of truth and grants truth; who is praised by Vishnu and Brahma, and who assumes his form purely out of his own compassion — to that Shankara I bow.

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.119.2)

nārada uvāca vivāhayitvā girijāṁ śaṅkaro lokaśaṅkaraḥ gatvā svaparvataṁ brahman kimakārṣīddhi tadvada

Narada said: O Brahman, after marrying Girija, Shankara, the benefactor of the world, went to his own mountain — tell me, what did he do there?

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.119.3)

kathaṁ hi tanayo jajñe śivasya paramātmanaḥ yadarthamātmārāmo'pi samuvāha śivāṁ prabhuḥ

How indeed was a son born to Shiva, the Supreme Self — for whose sake the Lord, ever content within himself, married Shiva (Parvati)?

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.119.4)

tārakasya kathaṁ brahman vadho'bhūddevaśaṅkara etatsarvamaśeṣeṇa vada kṛtvā dayāṁ mayi

O Brahman, how did the slaying of Taraka, the tormentor of the gods, come about? Tell me all of this in full, showing me your compassion.

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.119.5)

sūta uvāca ityākarṇya vacastasya nāradasya prajāpatiḥ suprasannamanāḥ smṛtvā śaṅkaraṁ pratyuvāca ha

Suta said: Having heard these words of Narada, Prajapati Brahma, his mind well pleased, called Shankara to mind and replied as follows.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.119.6)

brahmovāca caritaṁ śṛṇu vakṣyāmi śaśimaulestu nārada guhajanmakathāṁ divyāṁ tārakāsurasadvadham

Brahma said: Listen, Narada — I shall tell the deeds of the moon-crested Shiva: the divine story of Guha's birth, and the true slaying of the demon Taraka.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.119.7)

śrūyatāṁ kathayāmyadya kathāṁ pāpapraṇāśinīm yāṁ śrutvā sarvapāpebhyo mucyate mānavo dhruvam

Listen — today I shall tell a tale that destroys sin, hearing which a man is surely freed from every sin.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.119.8)

idamākhyānamanaghaṁ rahasyaṁ paramādbhutam pāpasantāpaharaṇaṁ sarvavighnavināśanam

This narrative is sinless, a great mystery, and supremely wondrous — it removes the torment of sin and destroys every obstacle.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.119.9)

sarvamaṅgaladaṁ sāraṁ sarvaśrutimanoharam sukhadaṁ mokṣabījaṁ ca karmamūlanikṛntanam

It bestows every auspiciousness, is the very essence, and is delightful to every listener; it gives happiness, is the seed of liberation, and cuts away the root of karma.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.119.10)

kailāsamāgatya śivāṁ vivāhya śobhāṁ prapede nitarāṁ śivo'pi vicārayāmāsa ca devakṛtyaṁ pīḍāṁ janasyāpi ca devakṛtye

Having come to Kailasa and married Shiva, Shiva too attained the greatest splendor; yet he pondered on the unfinished task of the gods, and on the suffering that people bore on account of that very task.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.119.11)

śivaḥsa bhagavān sākṣātkailāsamagamadyadā saukhyaṁ ca vividhaṁ cakrurgaṇāḥ sarve suharṣitāḥ

When the Blessed Lord Shiva himself in person arrived at Kailasa, all his ganas, greatly delighted, made manifold rejoicing.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.119.12)

mahotsavo mahānāsīcchive kailāsamāgate devāḥ svaviṣayaṁ prāptā harṣanirbharamānasāḥ

There was a great festival when Shiva arrived at Kailasa; the gods, their minds full of joy, returned each to his own domain.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.119.13)

atha śambhurmahādevo gṛhītvā girijāṁ śivām jagāma nirjanaṁ sthānaṁ mahādivyaṁ manoharam

Then Shambhu, Mahadeva, taking Girija, the auspicious one, with him, went to a solitary place, greatly divine and enchanting.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.119.14)

śayyāṁ ratikarīṁ kṛtvā puṣpacandanacarcitām adbhutāṁ tatra paramāṁ bhogavastvanvitāṁ śubhām

There he made a bed fit for love, anointed with flowers and sandal-paste — wondrous, supreme, furnished with every comfort, and auspicious.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.119.15)

sa reme tatra bhagavān śambhurgirijayā saha sahasravarṣaparyantaṁ devamānena mānadaḥ

There Lord Shambhu, the giver of honor, sported with Girija for a thousand years by the reckoning of the gods.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.119.16)

durgāṅgasparśamātreṇa līlayā mūrcchitaḥ śivaḥ mūrcchitā sā śivasparśādbubudhe na divāniśam

By the mere touch of Durga's body, Shiva became enraptured as if in play; and she too, enraptured by Shiva's touch, lost all sense of day and night.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.119.17)

hare bhogapravṛtte tu lokadharmapravartini mahān kālo vyatīyāya tayoḥ kṣaṇa ivānagha

O sinless Narada, while Hara, the establisher of the world's dharma, remained absorbed in that union, a great span of time passed for the two of them as if it were but a moment.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.119.18)

atha sarve surāstāta ekatrībhūya caikadā mantrayāñcakrurāgatya merau śakrapurogamāḥ

Then, dear one, all the gods, headed by Indra, once gathered together at Mount Meru and took counsel among themselves.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.119.19)

surā ūcuḥ vivāhaṁ kṛtavāñchambhurasmatkāryārthamīśvaraḥ yogīśvaro nirvikāro svātmārāmo nirañjanaḥ

The gods said: Shambhu, the Lord — master of yogis, changeless, ever content within his own self, and stainless — undertook marriage only for the sake of our task.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.119.20)

Yet no son has been born to him, and we do not know the reason. Why does the lord of gods delay in this way?

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.119.21)

brahmovāca etasminnantare devā nāradāddevadarśanāt bubudhustanmitaṁ bhogaṁ tayośca ramamāṇayoḥ

Brahma said: Meanwhile, through Narada, who had gone to see the divine couple, the gods learned just how long a time the two of them had remained absorbed in their love-play.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.119.22)

ciraṁ jñātvā tayorbhogaṁ cintāmāpuḥ surāśca te brahmāṇaṁ māṁ puraskṛtya yayurnārāyaṇāntikam

Learning that their union had continued for so long, the gods grew anxious; placing me, Brahma, at their head, they went to Narayana.

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.119.23)

taṁ natvā kathitaṁ sarvaṁ mayā vṛttāntamīpsitam santasthire sarvadevāḥ citre puttalikā yathā

Bowing to him, I related the whole matter as it was desired; and all the gods stood motionless, like painted figures in a picture.

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.119.24)

sahasravarṣaparyantaṁ devamānena śaṅkaraḥ ratau rataśca niśceṣṭo yogī viramate na hi

For a thousand years by the gods' own reckoning, Shankara has remained absorbed and motionless in love-play; being a yogi, he does not cease.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.119.25)

śrībhagavānuvāca cintā nāsti jagaddhātaḥ sarvaṁ bhadraṁ bhaviṣyati śaraṇaṁ vraja deveśa śaṅkarasya mahāprabhoḥ

The Blessed Lord said: There is no cause for worry, O sustainer of the world; all will be well. O lord of gods, go for refuge to the great Lord Shankara.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.119.26)

maheśaśaraṇāpannā ye janā manasā mudā teṣāṁ prajeśa bhaktānāṁ na kutaścidbhayaṁ kvacit

O lord of creatures, those devotees who take refuge in Mahesha with a glad heart never come to any fear, from any quarter.

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.119.27)

śṛṅgārabhaṅgaḥ samaye bhavitā nādhunā vidhe kālaprayuktaṁ kāryaṁ ca siddhiṁ prāpnoti nānyathā

O Vidhi, the ending of their amorous union will come at its own proper time, not now; a task carried out in step with time attains success, and not otherwise.

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.119.28)

śambhoḥ sambhogamiṣṭaṁ ko bhadrāṁ kartumiheśvaraḥ pūrṇe varṣasahasre ca svecchayā hi viraṁsyati

Who indeed has the power to bring a good end to Shambhu's desired union? When the thousand years are complete, he himself will cease, of his own will.

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.119.29)

strīpuṁso rativicchedamupāyena karoti yaḥ tasya strīputrayorbhedo bhavejjanmani janmani

Whoever, by any device, breaks apart the union of a man and woman — for him there will be separation from wife and son, birth after birth.

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.119.30)

bhraṣṭajñāno naṣṭakīrttiralakṣmīko bhavediha prayātyante kālasūtraṁ varṣalakṣaṁ sa pātakī

He becomes here bereft of knowledge, of ruined fame and without fortune; and at the end that sinner goes to the hell Kalasutra for a hundred thousand years.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.119.31)

rambhāyuktaṁ śakramimaṁ cakāra virataṁ ratau mahāmunīndro durvāsāstatstrībhedo babhūva ha

The great sage Durvasa once made Indra, who was united with Rambha, cease from his love-play; because of that, separation from his wife befell Indra.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.119.32)

punaranyāṁ sa samprāpya viṣevya śubhapāṇikām divyaṁ varṣasahasraṁ ca vijahau virahajvaram

Obtaining another auspicious wife and enjoying her, he still had to endure the fever of separation for a thousand divine years.

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.119.33)

ghṛtācyā saha saṁśliṣṭaṁ kāmaṁ vāritavān guruḥ ṣaṇmāsābhyantare candrastasya patnīṁ jahāra ha

The guru Brihaspati once checked one who was locked in embrace with the apsara Ghritachi; in consequence, within six months the Moon carried off his own wife.

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.119.34)

punaśśivaṁ samārādhya kṛtvā tārāmayaṁ raṇam tārāṁ sagarbhāṁ samprāpya vijahau virahajvaram

Then, worshipping Shiva and waging war over Tara, he won back Tara, who was by then pregnant — but only after enduring the fever of separation.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.119.35)

mohinīsahitaṁ candraṁ cakāra virataṁ ratau maharṣirgautamastasya strīvicchedo babhūva ha

The great sage Gautama once stopped the Moon, who was united in love with Mohini, and because of this the Moon too had to endure separation from his wife.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.119.36)

hariścandro hālikaṁ ca vṛṣalyā saha saṁyutam vārayāmāsa niśceṣṭaṁ nirjane tatphalaṁ śṛṇu

King Harishchandra once stopped a plowman who was united in a lonely place with a low-born woman, rendering him motionless — hear what came of it.

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.119.37)

bhraṣṭaḥ strīputrarājyebhyo viśvāmitreṇa tāḍitaḥ tataḥ śivaṁ samārādhya mukto bhūto hi kaśmalāt

As a result Harishchandra was stripped of wife, son and kingdom, and afflicted by Vishvamitra; only afterward, through the worship of Shiva, was he freed from that calamity.

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.119.38)

ajāmilaṁ dvijaśreṣṭhaṁ vṛṣalyā saha saṁyutam na bhiyā vārayāmāsuḥ surāstāṁ cāpi kecana

Out of that same fear, the gods did not stop even the excellent brahmin Ajamila when he was united with a low-born woman, nor did anyone else.

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.119.39)

sarvaṁ niṣekasādhyaṁ ca niṣeko balavān vidhe niṣekaphalado vai sa niṣekaḥ kena vāryate

O Vidhi, everything depends upon the act of seeding; that act alone is powerful, and it alone bestows its own fruit — who indeed can obstruct it?

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.119.40)

divyaṁ varṣasahasraṁ ca śambhoḥ sambhogakarma tat pūrṇe varṣasahasre ca gatvā tatra sureśvarāḥ

This act of union of Shambhu will continue for a thousand divine years; when that thousand years is complete, let the lords of the gods go there.

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.119.41)

yena vīryaṁ patedbhūmau tat kariṣyatha niścitam tatra vīrye ca bhavitā skandanāmā prabhoḥ sutaḥ

You must without fail contrive a way for the seed to fall upon the earth; from that very seed will be born the Lord's son, named Skanda.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.119.42)

adhunā svagṛhaṁ gaccha vidhe suragaṇaiḥ saha karotu śambhuḥ sambhogaṁ pārvatyā saha nirjane

Now go home, O Vidhi, together with the hosts of gods; let Shambhu continue his union with Parvati in solitude.

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.119.43)

brahmovāca ityuktvā kamalākāntaḥ śīghraṁ svāntaḥ puraṁ yayau svālayaṁ prayayurdevā mayā saha munīśvara

Brahma said: Having said this, Kamalakanta, lord of Lakshmi, swiftly went to his own inner abode; and, O lord of sages, the gods returned, with me, each to his own home.

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.119.44)

śaktiśaktimatoścātha vihāreṇāti ca kṣitiḥ bhārākrāntā cakampe sā saśeṣāpi sakacchapā

Then, from the excessive dalliance of Shakti and the possessor of Shakti, the earth — resting upon Shesha and upon the Tortoise — trembled, overburdened by their weight.

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.119.45)

kacchapasya hi bhāreṇa sarvādhāraḥ samīraṇaḥ stambhito'tha trilokāśca babhūvurbhayavihvalāḥ

Under the burden borne by the Tortoise, the wind, the support of all things, became paralyzed; and then the three worlds were overwhelmed with fear.

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.119.46)

atha sarve mayā devā hareśca śaraṇaṁ yayuḥ sarvaṁ nivedayāñcakrustadvṛttaṁ dīnamānasā

Then all the gods, together with me, went for refuge to Hari, and with dejected minds told him the entire matter.

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.119.47)

devā ūcuḥ devadeva ramānātha sarvāvanakara prabho rakṣa naḥ śaraṇāpannān bhayavyākulamānasān

The gods said: O god of gods, lord of Rama, protector of all, O Lord — protect us, who have come for refuge with our minds overwhelmed by fear.

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.119.48)

stambhitastrijagatprāṇo na jāne kena hetunā vyākulaṁ munibhirlekhaistrailokyaṁ sacarācaram

The very breath of the three worlds has been paralyzed, and we do not know for what reason; the three worlds, moving and unmoving alike, are in distress, as the sages too have discerned.

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.119.49)

brahmovāca ityuktvā sakalā devā mayā saha munīśvara dīnāstasthuḥ puro viṣṇormaunībhūtāḥ suduḥkhitāḥ

Brahma said: O lord of sages, having said this, all the gods, together with me, stood before Vishnu, dejected, fallen silent, and greatly sorrowful.

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.119.50)

tadākarṇya samādāya surānnaḥ sakalān hariḥ jagāma parvataṁ śīghraṁ kailāsaṁ śivavallabham

Hearing this, Hari, taking all of us gods with him, went swiftly to Mount Kailasa, beloved of Shiva.

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.119.51)

tatra gatvā harirdevairmayā ca suravallabhaḥ yayau śivavarasthānaṁ śaṅkaraṁ draṣṭukāmyayā

Having gone there, Hari, dear to the gods, together with the gods and with me, proceeded toward Shiva's excellent abode, wishing to see Shankara.

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.119.52)

tatra dṛṣṭvā śivaṁ viṣṇurna surairvismito'bhavat tatra sthitān śivagaṇān papraccha vinayānvitaḥ

There, Vishnu, together with the gods, did not see Shiva, and was astonished; humbly he questioned the Shiva-ganas standing there.

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.119.53)

viṣṇuruvāca he śaṅkarāḥ śivaḥ kutra gataḥ sarvaprabhurgaṇāḥ nivedayata naḥ prītyā duḥkhitānvai kṛpālavaḥ

Vishnu said: O attendants of Shankara! O ganas! Where has Shiva, the lord of all, gone? Kindly and lovingly tell us, who are in distress.

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.119.54)

brahmovāca ityākarṇya vacastasya sāmarasya harergaṇāḥ procuḥ prītyā gaṇāste hi śaṅkarasya ramāpatim

Brahma said: Hearing these words of Hari, who was accompanied by the gods, those attendants of Shankara replied lovingly to Vishnu, lord of Rama.

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.119.55)

śivagaṇā ūcuḥ hare śṛṇu śivaprītyā yathārthaṁ brūmahe vayam brahmaṇā nirjaraiḥ sārddhaṁ vṛttāntamakhilaṁ ca yat

The Shiva-ganas said: O Hari, listen — out of love for Shiva we shall tell you, and Brahma and the gods, the entire matter truly.

Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.119.56)

sarveśvaro mahādevo jagāma girijālayam saṁsthāpya no'tra suprītyā nānālīlāviśāradaḥ

The Lord of all, Mahadeva, skilled in manifold divine sports, having lovingly stationed us here, went within Girija's abode.

Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.119.57)
