Rudra Samhita · Chapter 13
The Personal Worship of Shiva
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.13.1)
brahmovāca | ataḥ paraṁ pravakṣyāmi pūjāvidhimanuttamam | śrūyatāmṛṣayo devāḥsarvakāmasukhāvaham
Brahma said: Beyond this, I shall now tell the supreme rite of worship; hear it, O sages and gods, the one that brings every desired happiness.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.13.2)
brāhme muhūrte cotthāya saṁsmaretsāmbakaṁ śivam | kuryāttatprārthanāṁ bhaktyā sāñjalirnatamastakaḥ
Rising at the Brahma-muhurta, one should remember Shiva together with Amba, his consort; with joined palms and bowed head, one should offer this prayer with devotion.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.13.3)
uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha deveśa uttiṣṭha hṛdayeśaya | uttiṣṭha tvamumāsvāminbrahmāṇḍe maṅgalaṁ kuru
"Arise, arise, O Lord of gods! Arise, you who dwell in the heart! Arise, O Lord of Uma, and bring auspiciousness upon the universe."
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.13.4)
jānāmi dharmaṁ na ca me pravṛttirjānāmyadharmaṁ na ca me nivṛttiḥ | tvayā mahādeva hṛdi sthitena yathā niyukto'smi tathā karomi
"I know dharma, yet I have no inclination toward it; I know adharma, yet I have no restraint from it. O Mahadeva, dwelling within my heart, as you direct me, so do I act."
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.13.5)
ityuktvā vacanaṁ bhaktyā smṛtvā ca gurupādake | bahirgaccheddakṣiṇāśāṁ tyāgārthaṁ malamūtrayoḥ
Having spoken this word with devotion, and having remembered the feet of the guru, one should go outside toward the south, to relieve oneself.
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.13.6)
dehaśuddhiṁ tataḥ kṛtvā sa mṛjjalaviśodhanaiḥ | hastau pādau ca prakṣālya dantadhāvanamācaret
Then, having purified the body with clay and water, and having washed the hands and feet, one should perform tooth-cleaning.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.13.7)
divānāthe tvanudite kṛtvā vai dantadhāvanam | mukhaṁ ṣoḍaśavāraṁ tu prakṣālyāñjalibhistathā
Before the sun has risen, having performed the tooth-cleaning, one should wash the mouth sixteen times with cupped handfuls of water.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.13.8)
ṣaṣṭhyādyāmāśca tithayo navamyarkadine tathā | varjyāḥ surarṣayo yatnādbhaktena radadhāvane
O divine sages, the sixth tithi and its kind, the ninth tithi, and Sunday — these should be diligently avoided by the devotee for tooth-cleaning.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.13.9)
yathāvakāśaṁ susnāyānnadyādiṣvathavā gṛhe | deśakālāviruddhaṁ ca snānaṁ kāryaṁ nareṇa ca
As opportunity allows, one should bathe well, in a river or the like, or else at home; a man should perform the bath in a manner not opposed to place and time.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.13.10)
raverdine tathā śrāddhe saṅkrāntau grahaṇe tathā | mahādāne tathā tīrthe hyupavāsadine tathā
On the day of the sun, at a shraddha, at the sankranti, at an eclipse, at a great gift-giving, at a sacred ford, and on a fasting day —
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.13.11)
aśauce'pyathavā prāpte na snāyāduṣṇavāriṇā | yathā sābhimukhaṁ snāyāttīrthādau bhaktimānnaraḥ
— or when a period of impurity has come, one should not bathe with hot water; the devoted man should bathe facing the sacred water, as at a tirtha.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.13.12)
tailābhyaṅgaṁ ca kurvīta vārāndṛṣṭvā krameṇa ca | nityamabhyaṅgake caiva vāsitaṁ vā na dūṣitam
One should apply oil, observing the proper days in due order; for the daily oil-application, scented oil, or at least oil that is not impure, should be used.
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.13.13)
śrāddhe ca grahaṇe caivopavāse pratipaddine | athavā sārṣapaṁ tailaṁ na duṣyed grahaṇaṁ vinā
At a shraddha, at an eclipse, on a fasting day, and on the first lunar tithi, oil is to be avoided; mustard oil, however, is not faulty, except at an eclipse.
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.13.14)
deśaṁ kālaṁ vicāryyaivaṁ snānaṁ kuryādyathāvidhi | uttarābhimukhaścaiva prāṅmukho'pyathavā punaḥ
Considering place and time in this way, one should bathe according to rule, facing north, or else again facing east.
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.13.15)
One should never bathe wearing an already-worn garment; one should bathe in a clean garment, remembering that god beforehand.
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.13.16)
paradhāryyaṁ ca nocchiṣṭaṁ rātrau ca vidhṛtaṁ ca yat | tena snānaṁ tathā kāryaṁ kṣālitaṁ ca parityajet
A garment worn by another, one soiled, or one worn during the night — one should not bathe wearing such a garment; even a washed one of this kind should be avoided.
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.13.17)
tarpaṇaṁ ca tataḥ kāryaṁ devarṣipitṛtṛptidam | dhautavastraṁ tato dhāryaṁ punarācamanaṁ caret
Then the tarpana should be performed, which satisfies the gods, the sages, and the ancestors; then a washed garment should be worn, and sipping-water taken again.
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.13.18)
śucau deśe tato gatvā gomayādyapamārjite | āsanaṁ ca śubhaṁ tatra racanīyaṁ dvijottamāḥ
Then, going to a pure spot cleansed with cow-dung and the like, O best of the twice-born, an auspicious seat should be prepared there.
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.13.19)
śuddhakāṣṭhasamutpannaṁ pūrṇaṁ staritameva vā | citrāsanaṁ tathā kuryātsarvakāmaphalapradam
One should use a seat made of pure wood, whole and covered, or a decorated seat, which bestows the fruit of every desire.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.13.20)
yathāyogyaṁ punargrāhyaṁ mṛgacarmādikaṁ ca yat | tatropaviśya kurvīta tripuṇḍraṁ bhasmanā sudhīḥ
As is fitting, a deerskin or the like may also be used; sitting there, the wise one should apply the tripundra mark with ash.
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.13.21)
japastapastathā dānaṁ tripuṇḍrātsaphalaṁ bhavet | abhāve bhasmanastatra jalasyādi prakīrtitam
Japa, austerity, and giving become fruitful through the tripundra; in the absence of ash, water or the like is prescribed instead.
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.13.22)
evaṁ kṛtvā tripuṇḍraṁ ca rudrākṣāndhārayennaraḥ | sampādya ca svakaṁ karma punarārādhayecchivam
Having thus applied the tripundra, a man should wear rudraksha beads; and having completed his own daily duties, he should again worship Shiva.
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.13.23)
punarācamanaṁ kṛtvā trivāraṁ mantrapūrvakam | ekaṁ vātha prakuryācca gaṅgābinduriti bruvan
Sipping water again three times, preceded by mantra, or performing it once while uttering "a drop of the Ganga," —
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.13.24)
annodakaṁ tathā tatra śivapūjārthamāharet | anyadvastu ca yatkiñcidyathāśakti samīpagam
one should bring food and water there for the worship of Shiva, and whatever other article, according to one's means, close at hand.
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.13.25)
kṛtvā stheyaṁ ca tatraiva dhairyamāsthāya vai punaḥ | arghapātraṁ tathā caikaṁ jalagandhākṣatairyutam
Having settled there, and composing oneself with steadiness, one should also prepare one vessel of arghya, filled with water, fragrance, and unbroken rice.
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.13.26)
dakṣiṇāṁse tathā sthāpyamupacārasya klṛptaye | gurośca smaraṇaṁ kṛtvā tadanujñāmavāpya ca
This should be placed on the right side, for the arrangement of the ritual offerings; having remembered the guru and obtained his sanction —
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.13.27)
saṅkalpaṁ vidhivatkṛtvā kāmanāṁ ca niyujya vai | pūjayetparayā bhaktyā śivaṁ saparivārakam
— having made the ritual resolve according to rule, and stated one's wish, one should worship Shiva, together with his retinue, with supreme devotion.
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.13.28)
mudrāmekāṁ pradarśyaiva pūjayedvighnahārakam | sindurādipadārthaiśca siddhibuddhisamanvitam
Displaying one mudra, one should worship the Remover of Obstacles, accompanied by Siddhi and Buddhi, with vermilion and other substances.
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.13.29)
lakṣalābhayutaṁ tatra pūjayitvā nametpunaḥ | caturthyantairnāmapadairnamo'ntaiḥ praṇavādibhiḥ
Worshipping him there, together with Laksha and Labha, one should again bow, with name-words ending in the dative case, beginning with the pranava and ending in "namaḥ."
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.13.30)
kṣamāpyainaṁ tadā devaṁ bhrātrā caiva samanvitam | pūjayetparayā bhaktyā namaskuryātpunaḥ punaḥ
Then, asking forgiveness of that god, together with his brother Kartikeya, one should worship with supreme devotion, and bow again and again.
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.13.31)
dvārapālaṁ sadā dvāri tiṣṭhantaṁ ca mahodaram | pūjayitvā tataḥ paścātpūjayedgirijāṁ satīm
Having worshipped the door-guardian, and Mahodara who ever stands at the door, one should afterward worship Girija Sati.
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.13.32)
candanaiḥ kuṅkumaiścaiva dhūpairdīpairanekaśaḥ | naivedyairvividhaiścaiva pūjayitvā tataḥ śivam
With sandalwood, saffron, incense, and lamps of many kinds, and various food-offerings, one should worship Shiva.
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.13.33)
namaskṛtya punastatra gacchecca śivasannidhau | yadi gehe pārthivīṁ vā haimīṁ vā rājatīṁ tathā
Having bowed, one should then go into the presence of Shiva; if at home, one should prepare an image of earth, or of gold, or of silver —
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.13.34)
dhātujanyāṁ tathaivānyāṁ pāradāṁ vā prakalpayet | namaskṛtya punastāṁ ca pūjayedbhaktitatparaḥ
— or another made of some other metal, or of mercury; having bowed to it, one intent on devotion should worship it.
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.13.35)
tasyāṁ tu pūjitāyāṁ vai sarve syuḥ pūjitāstathā | sthāpayecca mṛdā liṅgaṁ vidhāya vidhipūrvakam
When that image has been worshipped, all the gods are thereby worshipped as well; one should establish a linga of clay, fashioning it according to rule.
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.13.36)
kartavyaṁ sarvathā tatra niyamāḥ svagṛhe sthitaiḥ | prāṇapratiṣṭhāṁ kurvīta bhūtaśuddhiṁ vidhāya ca
For those residing in their own homes, these observances should always be followed there; one should perform the installation of life, having first performed the purification of the elements.
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.13.37)
dikpālānpūjayettatra sthāpayitvā śivālaye | gṛhe śivaḥ sadā pūjyo mūlamantrābhiyogataḥ
In a Shiva-temple, having installed the linga, one should worship the guardians of the directions there; at home, Shiva is to be ever worshipped by the application of the root-mantra.
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.13.38)
tatra tu dvārapālānāṁ niyamo nāsti sarvathā | gṛhe liṅgaṁ ca yatpūjyaṁ tasminsarvaṁ pratiṣṭhitam
There, at home, no rule at all applies regarding door-guardians; whatever linga is worshipped at home — everything else is established within it.
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.13.39)
pūjākāle ca sāṅgaṁ vai parivāreṇa saṁyutam | āvāhya pūjayeddevaṁ niyamo'tra na vidyate
At the time of worship, one should invoke and worship the god together with his attendant powers and his retinue; there is no fixed rule here.
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.13.40)
śivasya sannidhiṁ kṛtvā svāsanaṁ parikalpayet | udaṅmukhastadā sthitvā punarācamanaṁ caret
Having drawn near to Shiva, one should arrange one's own seat; then, sitting facing north, one should again perform the sipping of water.
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.13.41)
prakṣālya hastau paścādvai prāṇāyāmaṁ prakalpayet | mūlamantreṇa tatraiva daśāvartaṁ nayennaraḥ
Then, having washed the hands, one should perform pranayama; with the root-mantra, right there, a man should perform ten repetitions.
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.13.42)
pañcamudrāḥ prakartavyāḥ pūjāvaśyaṁ kare sthitā | etā mudrāḥ pradarśyaiva caretpūjāvidhiṁ naraḥ
Five mudras are necessarily to be made with the hand in worship; displaying these mudras, a man should carry out the rite of worship.
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.13.43)
dīpaṁ kṛtvā tadā tatra namaskāraṁ guroratha | badhvā padmāsanaṁ tatra bhadrāsanamathāpi vā
Then, having lit a lamp there, and having bowed to the guru, one should sit in the lotus posture, or else in the auspicious posture.
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.13.44)
uttānāsanakaṁ kṛtvā paryaṅkāsanakaṁ tathā | yathāsukhaṁ tathā sthitvā prayogaṁ punareva ca
Or in the reclining posture, or the couch-posture — sitting however is comfortable, one should again perform the ritual application.
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.13.45)
kṛtvā pūjāṁ purā jātāṁ vaṭṭakenaiva tārayet | yadi vā svayameveha gṛhe na niyamo'sti ca
Having performed the worship as previously described, one should complete it with a small offering; or, if performing it oneself at home, there is no fixed rule.
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.13.46)
paścāccaivārghapātreṇa kṣālayelliṅgamuttamam | ananyamānaso bhūtvā pūjādravyaṁ nidhāya ca
Then, with the water of the arghya vessel, one should wash the supreme linga; becoming single-minded, and having set out the articles of worship —
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.13.47)
paścāccāvāhayeddevaṁ mantreṇānena vai naraḥ | kailāsaśikharasthaṁ ca pārvatīpatimuttamam
— a man should then invoke the god with this mantra: the supreme Lord of Parvati, who dwells upon the peak of Kailasa —
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.13.48)
yathoktarūpiṇaṁ śambhuṁ nirguṇaṁ guṇarūpiṇam | pañcavaktraṁ daśabhujaṁ trinetraṁ vṛṣabhadhvajam
Shambhu, of the form thus described, beyond qualities yet taking the form of qualities; five-faced, ten-armed, three-eyed, with the bull on his banner —
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.13.49)
karpūragauraṁ divyāṅgaṁ candramauliṁ kapardinam | vyāghracarmottarīyaṁ ca gajacarmāmbaraṁ śubham

jayajayeti śabdaiśca sevitaṁ bhaktapuñjakaiḥ | tejasā duḥsahenaiva durlakṣyaṁ devasevitam
attended by throngs of devotees with cries of "victory, victory!"; hard to behold because of unbearable radiance, and served by the gods —
Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.13.52)
śaraṇyaṁ sarvasattvānāṁ prasannamukhapaṅkajam | vedaiḥ śāstrairyathāgītaṁ viṣṇubrahmanutaṁ sadā

bhaktavatsalamānandaṁ śivamāvāhayāmyaham | evaṁ dhyātvā śivaṁ sāmbamāsanaṁ parikalpayet
affectionate to his devotees, the very form of bliss — that Shiva do I invoke. Having thus meditated upon Shiva together with Amba, one should prepare a seat for him.
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.13.54)
caturthyantapadenaiva sarvaṁ kuryādyathākramam | tataḥ pādyaṁ pradadyādvai tato'rghyaṁ śaṅkarāya ca
Everything should be done in due order, with words in the dative case; then one should offer the water for the feet, and then the arghya, to Shankara.
Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.13.55)

Then, having offered the sipping-water to Shambhu, the Supreme Self, one should afterward joyfully bathe Shankara with the five substances.
Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.13.56)
