The Dispute Between Ganesha and Shiva's Attendants

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.132.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच गणास्ते क्रोधसम्पन्नास्तत्र गत्वा शिवाज्ञया । पप्रच्छुर्गिरिजापुत्रं तं तदा द्वारपालकम्

brahmovāca gaṇāste krodhasampannāstatra gatvā śivājñayā papracchurgirijāputraṁ taṁ tadā dvārapālakam

Those ganas, filled with anger, went there by Shiva's command and questioned Girija's son, that doorkeeper.

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.132.2)

शिवगणा ऊचुः कोऽसि त्वं कुत आयातः किं वा त्वं च चिकीर्षसि । इतोऽद्य गच्छ दूरं वै यदि जीवितुमिच्छसि

śivagaṇā ūcuḥ ko'si tvaṁ kuta āyātaḥ kiṁ vā tvaṁ ca cikīrṣasi ito'dya gaccha dūraṁ vai yadi jīvitumicchasi

Shiva's attendants said: Who are you, from where have you come, and what do you intend to do? Go far from here today, if you wish to live.

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.132.3)

ब्रह्मोवाच तदीयं तद्वचः श्रुत्वा गिरिजातनयः स वै । निर्भयो दण्डपाणिश्च द्वारपानब्रवीदिदम्

brahmovāca tadīyaṁ tadvacaḥ śrutvā girijātanayaḥ sa vai nirbhayo daṇḍapāṇiśca dvārapānabravīdidam

Brahma said: Hearing those words of theirs, that son of Girija, fearless, staff in hand, spoke thus, as the guardian of the door.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.132.4)

गणेश उवाच यूयं के कुत आयाता भवन्तः सुन्दरा इमे । यात दूरं किमर्थं वै स्थिता अत्र विरोधिनः

gaṇeśa uvāca yūyaṁ ke kuta āyātā bhavantaḥ sundarā ime yāta dūraṁ kimarthaṁ vai sthitā atra virodhinaḥ

Ganesha said: Who are you, and from where have you come, you handsome ones? Go far away; why do you stand here as opponents?

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.132.5)

ब्रह्मोवाच एवं श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य हास्यं कृत्वा परस्परम् । ऊचुःसर्वे शिवगणा महावीरा गतस्मयाः

brahmovāca evaṁ śrutvā vacastasya hāsyaṁ kṛtvā parasparam ūcuḥsarve śivagaṇā mahāvīrā gatasmayāḥ

Brahma said: Hearing his words, all Shiva's attendants, great heroes, laughed together, smiling, and spoke.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.132.6)

परस्परमिति प्रोच्य सर्वे ते शिवपार्षदाः । द्वारपालं गणेशं तं प्रत्यूचुः क्रुद्धमानसाः

parasparamiti procya sarve te śivapārṣadāḥ dvārapālaṁ gaṇeśaṁ taṁ pratyūcuḥ kruddhamānasāḥ

Having said this to one another, all those attendants of Shiva, their minds now angered, replied to that doorkeeper Ganesha.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.132.7)

शिवगणा ऊचुः श्रूयतां द्वारपाला हि वयं शिवगणा वराः । त्वां निवारयितुं प्राप्ताः शङ्करस्याज्ञया विभोः

śivagaṇā ūcuḥ śrūyatāṁ dvārapālā hi vayaṁ śivagaṇā varāḥ tvāṁ nivārayituṁ prāptāḥ śaṅkarasyājñayā vibhoḥ

Shiva's attendants said: Hear us, O doorkeeper: we are the foremost attendants of Shiva; we have come by the command of the mighty Shankara to remove you.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.132.8)

त्वामपीह गणं मत्वा न हन्यामोऽन्यथा हतः । तिष्ठ दूरे स्वतः त्वं च किमर्थं मृत्युमीहसे

tvāmapīha gaṇaṁ matvā na hanyāmo'nyathā hataḥ tiṣṭha dūre svataḥ tvaṁ ca kimarthaṁ mṛtyumīhase

Considering you too to be some sort of gana, we do not slay you here; otherwise you would already be dead. Stand aside on your own -- why do you court death?

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.132.9)

ब्रह्मोवाच इत्युक्तोऽपि गणेशश्च गिरिजातनयोऽभयः । निर्भर्त्स्य शङ्करगणान्न द्वारं मुक्तवांस्तदा

brahmovāca ityukto'pi gaṇeśaśca girijātanayo'bhayaḥ nirbhartsya śaṅkaragaṇānna dvāraṁ muktavāṁstadā

Brahma said: Though thus addressed, Ganesha, Girija's son, fearless, rebuked Shankara's attendants and did not vacate the door.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.132.10)

ते सर्वेऽपि गणाः शैवाः तत्रत्या वचनं तदा । श्रुत्वा तत्र शिवं गत्वा तद्वृत्तान्तमथाब्रुवन्

te sarve'pi gaṇāḥ śaivāḥ tatratyā vacanaṁ tadā śrutvā tatra śivaṁ gatvā tadvṛttāntamathābruvan

All those Shaiva attendants, hearing that speech there, then went to Shiva and reported the whole matter to him.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.132.11)

ततश्च तद्वचः श्रुत्वाद्भुतलीलो महेश्वरः । विनिर्भर्त्स्य गणानूचे निजाँल्लोकगतिर्मुने

tataśca tadvacaḥ śrutvādbhutalīlo maheśvaraḥ vinirbhartsya gaṇānūce nijā~llokagatirmune

Then, hearing that report, Maheshvara, of wondrous sport, O sage, whose ways transcend the world, rebuked and spoke to his own ganas.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.132.12)

महेश्वर उवाच कश्चायं वर्तते किं च ब्रवीत्यरिवदुच्छ्रितः । किं करिष्यत्यसद्बुद्धिः स्वमृत्युं वाञ्छति ध्रुवम्

maheśvara uvāca kaścāyaṁ vartate kiṁ ca bravītyarivaducchritaḥ kiṁ kariṣyatyasadbuddhiḥ svamṛtyuṁ vāñchati dhruvam

Maheshvara said: Who indeed is this, and what does he say, standing there puffed up like an enemy? What will that foolish creature do -- surely he desires his own death.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.132.13)

दूरतः क्रियतां ह्येष द्वारपालो नवीनकः । क्लीबा इव स्थितास्तस्य वृत्तं वदथ मे कथम्

dūrataḥ kriyatāṁ hyeṣa dvārapālo navīnakaḥ klībā iva sthitāstasya vṛttaṁ vadatha me katham

Let this newly-arrived doorkeeper be driven far away. Why do you stand there like eunuchs -- tell me, what happened with him?

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.132.14)

स्वामिनोक्ता गणास्ते चाद्भुतलीलेन शम्भुना । पुनरागत्य तत्रैव तमूचुर्द्वारपालकम्

svāminoktā gaṇāste cādbhutalīlena śambhunā punarāgatya tatraiva tamūcurdvārapālakam

Thus commanded by their master, the wondrous-sporting Shambhu, those attendants went there once more and spoke to that doorkeeper.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.132.15)

शिवगणा ऊचुः । रे रे द्वारप कस्त्वं हि स्थितश्च स्थापितः कुतः । नैवास्मान्गणयस्येवं कथं जीवितुमिच्छसि

śivagaṇā ūcuḥ re re dvārapa kastvaṁ hi sthitaśca sthāpitaḥ kutaḥ naivāsmāngaṇayasyevaṁ kathaṁ jīvitumicchasi

Shiva's attendants said: Hey you, doorkeeper! Who are you, and by whom were you stationed here? You do not even count us worthy of notice -- how do you still wish to live?

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.132.16)

द्वारपाला वयं सर्वे स्थिताः किं परिभाषसे । सिंहासनगृहीतश्च शृगालः शिवमीहते

dvārapālā vayaṁ sarve sthitāḥ kiṁ paribhāṣase siṁhāsanagṛhītaśca śṛgālaḥ śivamīhate

We ourselves are all doorkeepers standing here -- what nonsense do you speak? A jackal seated on a throne, aspiring to be Shiva.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.132.17)

तावद्गर्जसि मूर्ख त्वं यावद्गणपराक्रमः । नानुभूतस्त्वयात्रैव ह्यनुभूतः पतिष्यसि

tāvadgarjasi mūrkha tvaṁ yāvadgaṇaparākramaḥ nānubhūtastvayātraiva hyanubhūtaḥ patiṣyasi

You roar so loudly, O fool, only because you have not yet felt the might of the ganas here; once you have felt it, you shall fall.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.132.18)

इत्युक्तस्तैस्सुसङ्क्रुद्धो हस्ताभ्यां यष्टिकां तदा । गृहीत्वा ताडयामास गणांस्तान्परिभाषिणः

ityuktastaissusaṅkruddho hastābhyāṁ yaṣṭikāṁ tadā gṛhītvā tāḍayāmāsa gaṇāṁstānparibhāṣiṇaḥ

Thus addressed by them, greatly enraged, he took up his staff with both hands and struck those slandering ganas.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.132.19)

उवाचाथ शिवापुत्रः परिभर्त्स्य गणेश्वरान् । शङ्करस्य महावीरान्निर्भयस्तान्गणेश्वरः

uvācātha śivāputraḥ paribhartsya gaṇeśvarān śaṅkarasya mahāvīrānnirbhayastāngaṇeśvaraḥ

Then Shiva's son, that lord of ganas, fearless, rebuking those great heroes, the lords of Shankara's ganas, spoke to them.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.132.20)

शिवापुत्र उवाच यात यात इतो दूरे नो चेद्वो दर्शयामि ह । स्वपराक्रममत्युग्रं यास्यथात्युपहास्यताम्

śivāputra uvāca yāta yāta ito dūre no cedvo darśayāmi ha svaparākramamatyugraṁ yāsyathātyupahāsyatām

Shiva's son said: Go, go far away from here, or else I shall show you my own most terrible might, and you shall become utterly ridiculous.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.132.21)

इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य गिरिजातनयस्य हि । परस्परमथोचुस्ते शङ्करस्य गणास्तदा

ityākarṇya vacastasya girijātanayasya hi parasparamathocuste śaṅkarasya gaṇāstadā

Hearing these words of Girija's son, Shankara's attendants then said to one another.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.132.22)

शिवगणा ऊचुः । किं कर्तव्यं क्व गन्तव्यं क्रियते स न किं पुनः । मर्यादा रक्ष्यतेऽस्माभिरन्यथा किं ब्रवीति च

śivagaṇā ūcuḥ kiṁ kartavyaṁ kva gantavyaṁ kriyate sa na kiṁ punaḥ maryādā rakṣyate'smābhiranyathā kiṁ bravīti ca

Shiva's attendants said: What must be done, where should we go, is this not to be done again? We must guard our honor -- otherwise what will he say?

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.132.23)

ब्रह्मोवाच ततः शम्भुगणाःसर्वे शिवं दूरे व्यवस्थितम् । क्रोशमात्रं तु कैलासाद्गत्वा ते च तथाऽब्रुवन्

brahmovāca tataḥ śambhugaṇāḥsarve śivaṁ dūre vyavasthitam krośamātraṁ tu kailāsādgatvā te ca tathā'bruvan

Brahma said: Then all Shambhu's attendants, going to Shiva who stood at some distance, a mere krosha away from Kailasa, spoke to him thus.

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.132.24)

शिवो विहस्य तान्सर्वांस्त्रिशूलकर उग्रधीः । उवाच परमेशो हि स्वगणान् वीरसम्मतान्

śivo vihasya tānsarvāṁstriśūlakara ugradhīḥ uvāca parameśo hi svagaṇān vīrasammatān

Shiva, trident in hand, of fierce resolve, smiling at them all, that Supreme Lord spoke to his own attendants, esteemed as heroes.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.132.25)

शिव उवाच रे रे गणाः क्लीबमता न वीरा वीरमानिनः । मदग्रे नोदितुं योग्या भर्त्सितः किं पुनर्वदेत्

śiva uvāca re re gaṇāḥ klībamatā na vīrā vīramāninaḥ madagre nodituṁ yogyā bhartsitaḥ kiṁ punarvadet

Shiva said: Hey, you ganas, of eunuch-like disposition, no heroes though you think yourselves heroic! You are not even fit to speak before me. What more could a rebuked man say?

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.132.26)

गम्यतां ताड्यतां चैष यः कश्चित्प्रभवेदिह । बहुनोक्तेन किं चात्र दूरीकर्तव्य एव सः

gamyatāṁ tāḍyatāṁ caiṣa yaḥ kaścitprabhavediha bahunoktena kiṁ cātra dūrīkartavya eva saḥ

Go and strike whoever it is that has proven himself powerful here. What need is there to say more -- he must simply be driven off.

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.132.27)

ब्रह्मोवाच इति सर्वे महेशेन जग्मुस्तत्र मुनीश्वर । भर्त्सितास्तेन देवेन प्रोचुश्च गणसत्तमाः

brahmovāca iti sarve maheśena jagmustatra munīśvara bhartsitāstena devena procuśca gaṇasattamāḥ

Brahma said: Thus commanded and rebuked by that God Mahesha, O lord of sages, all of them went there, and those foremost ganas spoke.

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.132.28)

शिवगणा ऊचुः । रेरे त्वं शृणु वै बाल बलात्किं परिभाषसे । इतस्त्वं दूरतो याहि नो चेन्मृत्युर्भविष्यति

śivagaṇā ūcuḥ rere tvaṁ śṛṇu vai bāla balātkiṁ paribhāṣase itastvaṁ dūrato yāhi no cenmṛtyurbhaviṣyati

Shiva's attendants said: Hey, you, listen, boy! Why do you speak so forcefully? Go far away from here, or else death shall be your fate.

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.132.29)

ब्रह्मोवाच इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तेषां शिवाज्ञाकारिणां ध्रुवम् । शिवासुतस्तदाभूत्स किं करोमीति दुःखितः

brahmovāca iti śrutvā vacasteṣāṁ śivājñākāriṇāṁ dhruvam śivāsutastadābhūtsa kiṁ karomīti duḥkhitaḥ

Brahma said: Hearing these words of those who surely carried out Shiva's command, Shiva's son became troubled, thinking, 'What am I to do?'

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.132.30)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे देवी तेषां तस्य च वै पुनः । श्रुत्वा तु कलहं द्वारि सखीं पश्येति साब्रवीत्

etasminnantare devī teṣāṁ tasya ca vai punaḥ śrutvā tu kalahaṁ dvāri sakhīṁ paśyeti sābravīt

Meanwhile the goddess, hearing that quarrel at the door between them and him, said to her friend, 'Go and see.'

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.132.31)

समागत्य सखी तत्र वृत्तान्तं समबुध्यत । क्षणमात्रं तदा दृष्ट्वा गता हृष्टा शिवान्तिकम्

samāgatya sakhī tatra vṛttāntaṁ samabudhyata kṣaṇamātraṁ tadā dṛṣṭvā gatā hṛṣṭā śivāntikam

Coming there, her friend understood the whole matter; having watched for but a moment, she went, delighted, to Shiva's side.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.132.32)

तत्र गत्वा तु तत्सर्वं वृत्तं तद्यदभून्मुने । अशेषेण तया सख्या कथितं गिरिजाग्रतः

tatra gatvā tu tatsarvaṁ vṛttaṁ tadyadabhūnmune aśeṣeṇa tayā sakhyā kathitaṁ girijāgrataḥ

Going there, O sage, that friend related to Girija the whole account of everything that had happened, in full.

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.132.33)

सख्युवाच अस्मदीयो गणो यो हि स्थितो द्वारि महेश्वरि । निर्भर्त्सयन्ति तं वीराः शङ्करस्य गणा ध्रुवम्

sakhyuvāca asmadīyo gaṇo yo hi sthito dvāri maheśvari nirbhartsayanti taṁ vīrāḥ śaṅkarasya gaṇā dhruvam

The friend said: O Great Goddess, that gana of ours who stands at the door is surely being rebuked by the heroic attendants of Shankara.

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.132.34)

शिवश्चैव गणाः सर्वे विना तेऽवसरं कथम् । प्रविशन्ति हठाद्गेहे नैतच्छुभतरं तव

śivaścaiva gaṇāḥ sarve vinā te'vasaraṁ katham praviśanti haṭhādgehe naitacchubhataraṁ tava

Shiva himself and all his attendants -- how can they force their way into the house without your permission? This is not at all good for you.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.132.35)

सम्यक् कृतं ह्यनेनैव न हि कोऽपि प्रवेशितः । दुःखं चैवानुभूयात्र तिरस्कारादिकं तथा

samyak kṛtaṁ hyanenaiva na hi ko'pi praveśitaḥ duḥkhaṁ caivānubhūyātra tiraskārādikaṁ tathā

He alone has done well; no one has been allowed to enter. And here, he has himself suffered pain and insult.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.132.36)

अतः परन्तु वाग्वादः क्रियते च परस्परम् । वाग्वादे च कृते नैव तर्ह्यायान्तु सुखेन वै

ataḥ parantu vāgvādaḥ kriyate ca parasparam vāgvāde ca kṛte naiva tarhyāyāntu sukhena vai

But beyond this, a dispute of words is now going on between them. If this dispute of words does not resolve, then let them not enter easily.

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.132.37)

कृतश्चैवात्र वाग्वादस्तं जित्वा विजयेन च । प्रविशन्तु तथा सर्वे नान्यथा कर्हिचित्प्रिये

kṛtaścaivātra vāgvādastaṁ jitvā vijayena ca praviśantu tathā sarve nānyathā karhicitpriye

This dispute of words has now happened here; let them all enter only having conquered him in victory, and not otherwise, in any way, O dear one.

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.132.38)

अस्मिन्नेवास्मदीये वै सर्वे सम्भर्त्सिता वयम् । तस्माद्देवि त्वया भद्रे न त्याज्यो मान उत्तमः

asminnevāsmadīye vai sarve sambhartsitā vayam tasmāddevi tvayā bhadre na tyājyo māna uttamaḥ

In this very matter of our own gana, we all have been rebuked. Therefore, O goddess, O auspicious one, this high honor must not be forsaken by you.

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.132.39)

शिवो मर्कटवत्तेऽद्य वर्तते सर्वदा सति । किं करिष्यत्यहङ्कारमानुकूल्यं भविष्यति

śivo markaṭavatte'dya vartate sarvadā sati kiṁ kariṣyatyahaṅkāramānukūlyaṁ bhaviṣyati

Shiva always behaves toward you so playfully, O virtuous one; what indeed can his pride achieve here? All will fall out in your favor.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.132.40)

ब्रह्मोवाच अहो क्षणं स्थिता तत्र शिवेच्छा वशतःसती

brahmovāca aho kṣaṇaṁ sthitā tatra śivecchā vaśataḥsatī

Brahma said: Ah, for a moment that virtuous one stood there, under the sway of Shiva's own will.

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.132.41)

मनस्युवाच सा भूत्वा मानिनी पार्वती तदा

manasyuvāca sā bhūtvā māninī pārvatī tadā

Becoming resolute of mind, Parvati then spoke within her heart.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.132.42)

शिवोवाच अहो क्षणं स्थितो नैव हठात्कारः कथं कृतः । कथं चैवात्र कर्त्तव्यं विनयेनाथ वा पुनः

śivovāca aho kṣaṇaṁ sthito naiva haṭhātkāraḥ kathaṁ kṛtaḥ kathaṁ caivātra karttavyaṁ vinayenātha vā punaḥ

Shiva [Parvati] said: 'Ah, he did not even wait a moment -- why was such force used? What indeed should be done here, whether through gentleness or otherwise?'

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.132.43)

भविष्यति भवत्येव कृतं नैवान्यथा पुनः । इत्युक्त्वा तु सखी तत्र प्रेषिता प्रियया तदा

bhaviṣyati bhavatyeva kṛtaṁ naivānyathā punaḥ ityuktvā tu sakhī tatra preṣitā priyayā tadā

'What is to happen will happen on its own; nothing else needs to be done.' Having said this, that friend was then sent there by her beloved [Parvati].

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.132.44)

समागत्याऽब्रवीत्सा च प्रियया कथितं हि यत् । समाचष्ट गणेशं तं गिरिजातनयं तदा

samāgatyā'bravītsā ca priyayā kathitaṁ hi yat samācaṣṭa gaṇeśaṁ taṁ girijātanayaṁ tadā

Coming there, she related to Ganesha, that son of Girija, exactly what had been told to her by her beloved mistress.

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.132.45)

सख्युवाच सम्यक्कृतं त्वया भद्र बलात्ते प्रविशन्तु न । भवदग्रे गणा ह्येते किं जयन्तु भवादृशम्

sakhyuvāca samyakkṛtaṁ tvayā bhadra balātte praviśantu na bhavadagre gaṇā hyete kiṁ jayantu bhavādṛśam

The friend said: 'You have done well, O good one; let them not enter by force. Shall these mere ganas conquer one such as you, before whom they stand?'

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.132.46)

कृतं चेद्वाकृतं चैव कर्त्तव्यं क्रियतां त्वया । जितो यस्तु पुनर्वापि न वैरमथ वा ध्रुवम्

kṛtaṁ cedvākṛtaṁ caiva karttavyaṁ kriyatāṁ tvayā jito yastu punarvāpi na vairamatha vā dhruvam

'Whatever must be done, whether already begun or not, let it be done by you. And whoever is once defeated shall surely bear no further enmity.'

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.132.47)

ब्रह्मोवाच इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्या मातुश्चैव गणेश्वरः । आनन्दं परमं प्राप बलं भूरि महोन्नतिम्

brahmovāca iti śrutvā vacastasyā mātuścaiva gaṇeśvaraḥ ānandaṁ paramaṁ prāpa balaṁ bhūri mahonnatim

Brahma said: Hearing these words from his mother, the lord of ganas attained supreme joy, and great strength, and a mighty exaltation.

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.132.48)

बद्धकक्षस्तथोष्णीषं बद्ध्वा जङ्घोरु संस्पृशन् । उवाच तान् गणान् सर्वान् निर्भयं वचनं मुदा

baddhakakṣastathoṣṇīṣaṁ baddhvā jaṅghoru saṁspṛśan uvāca tān gaṇān sarvān nirbhayaṁ vacanaṁ mudā

Girding his waist and binding his turban, striking his own thighs and shins, he spoke fearless words to all those ganas with joy.

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.132.49)

गणेश उवाच अहं च गिरिजासूनुर्यूयं शिवगणास्तथा । उभये समतां प्राप्ताः कर्तव्यं क्रियतां पुनः

gaṇeśa uvāca ahaṁ ca girijāsūnuryūyaṁ śivagaṇāstathā ubhaye samatāṁ prāptāḥ kartavyaṁ kriyatāṁ punaḥ

Ganesha said: 'I am the son of Girija, and you are Shiva's attendants; both of us have now reached an equal footing -- let what must be done now be done.'

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.132.50)

भवन्तो द्वारपालाश्च द्वारपोऽहं कथं न हि । भवन्तश्च स्थितास्तत्राऽहं स्थितोऽत्रेति निश्चितम्

bhavanto dvārapālāśca dvārapo'haṁ kathaṁ na hi bhavantaśca sthitāstatrā'haṁ sthito'treti niścitam

'You are doorkeepers, and am I not also a doorkeeper? You stand there, and I stand here -- this much is certain.'

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.132.51)

भवद्भिश्च स्थितं ह्यत्र यदा भवति निश्चितम् । तदा भवद्भिः कर्त्तव्यं शिवाज्ञापरिपालनम्

bhavadbhiśca sthitaṁ hyatra yadā bhavati niścitam tadā bhavadbhiḥ karttavyaṁ śivājñāparipālanam

'When it is settled that you are stationed here, then it is for you to carry out the observance of Shiva's own command.'

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.132.52)

इदानीं तु मया चात्र शिवाज्ञापरिपालनम् । सत्यं च क्रियते वीरा निर्णीतं मे यथोचितम्

idānīṁ tu mayā cātra śivājñāparipālanam satyaṁ ca kriyate vīrā nirṇītaṁ me yathocitam

'And now here, by me too, the observance of Shiva's command is truly being carried out, O heroes, exactly as has been rightly determined by me.'

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.132.53)

तस्माच्छिवगणाःसर्वे वचनं शृणुतादरात् । हठाद्वा विनयाद्वा न गन्तव्यं मन्दिरे पुनः

tasmācchivagaṇāḥsarve vacanaṁ śṛṇutādarāt haṭhādvā vinayādvā na gantavyaṁ mandire punaḥ

'Therefore, all you attendants of Shiva, hear my word with respect: neither by force nor by persuasion shall you again enter this dwelling.'

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.132.54)

ब्रह्मोवाच इत्युक्तास्ते गणेनैव सर्वे ते लज्जिता गणाः । ययुः शिवान्तिकं तं वै नमस्कृत्य पुरः स्थिताः

brahmovāca ityuktāste gaṇenaiva sarve te lajjitā gaṇāḥ yayuḥ śivāntikaṁ taṁ vai namaskṛtya puraḥ sthitāḥ

Brahma said: Thus addressed by that gana, all those attendants, ashamed, went to Shiva's presence, and, bowing, stood before him.

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.132.55)

स्थित्वा न्यवेदयन्सर्वे वृत्तान्तं च तदद्भुतम् । करौ बद्ध्वा नतस्कन्धाः शिवं स्तुत्वा पुरः स्थिताः

sthitvā nyavedayansarve vṛttāntaṁ ca tadadbhutam karau baddhvā nataskandhāḥ śivaṁ stutvā puraḥ sthitāḥ

Standing there, all of them reported that wondrous account, and, with joined hands and bowed shoulders, having praised Shiva, they stood before him.

Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.132.56)

तत्सर्वं तु तदा श्रुत्वा वृत्तं तत्स्वगणोदितम् । लौकिकीं वृत्तिमाश्रित्य शङ्करो वाक्यमब्रवीत्

tatsarvaṁ tu tadā śrutvā vṛttaṁ tatsvagaṇoditam laukikīṁ vṛttimāśritya śaṅkaro vākyamabravīt

Having heard that entire account as told by his own attendants, Shankara, adopting the manner of ordinary worldly conduct, spoke these words.

Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.132.57)

शङ्कर उवाच श्रूयतां च गणाःसर्वे युद्धं योग्यं भवेन्न हि । यूयं चात्रास्मदीया वै स च गौरीगणस्तथा

śaṅkara uvāca śrūyatāṁ ca gaṇāḥsarve yuddhaṁ yogyaṁ bhavenna hi yūyaṁ cātrāsmadīyā vai sa ca gaurīgaṇastathā

Shankara said: 'Hear me, all you ganas: this is not fit for war. You here are indeed my own, and he too is Gauri's own gana.'

Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.132.58)

विनयः क्रियते चेद्वै वश्यः शम्भुः स्त्रिया सदा । इति ख्यातिर्भवेल्लोके गर्हिता मे गणा ध्रुवम्

vinayaḥ kriyate cedvai vaśyaḥ śambhuḥ striyā sadā iti khyātirbhavelloke garhitā me gaṇā dhruvam

'But if I resolve this through gentleness, then it will be said among the people that Shambhu is always in the sway of a woman -- and that would surely bring reproach upon me, O ganas.'

Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.132.59)

कृते चैवात्र कर्तव्यमिति नीतिर्गरीयसी । एकाकी स गणो बालः किं करिष्यति विक्रमम्

kṛte caivātra kartavyamiti nītirgarīyasī ekākī sa gaṇo bālaḥ kiṁ kariṣyati vikramam

'Once a course is set, it must be seen through -- this is the higher policy. What great feat of valor can that one lone boy accomplish?'

Verse 60 (shiva.rudra.132.60)

भवन्तश्च गणा लोके युद्धे चाति विशारदाः । मदीयाश्च कथं युद्धं हित्वा यास्यथ लाघवम्

bhavantaśca gaṇā loke yuddhe cāti viśāradāḥ madīyāśca kathaṁ yuddhaṁ hitvā yāsyatha lāghavam

'And you, my own attendants, are known in the world as masters of war -- how can you abandon the fight and go away in disgrace?'

Verse 61 (shiva.rudra.132.61)

स्त्रियाऽऽग्रहः कथं कार्यो पत्युरग्रे विशेषतः । कृत्वा सा गिरिजा तस्य नूनं फलमवाप्स्यति

striyā''grahaḥ kathaṁ kāryo patyuragre viśeṣataḥ kṛtvā sā girijā tasya nūnaṁ phalamavāpsyati

'How should a wife's own stubbornness be honored, especially before her husband? Having done this, Girija shall surely obtain its fruit.'

Verse 62 (shiva.rudra.132.62)

तस्मात्सर्वे च मद्वीराः शृणुतादरतो वचः । कर्त्तव्यं सर्वथा युद्धं भावि यत्तद्भवत्विति

tasmātsarve ca madvīrāḥ śṛṇutādarato vacaḥ karttavyaṁ sarvathā yuddhaṁ bhāvi yattadbhavatviti

'Therefore, all you, my heroes, hear my word with reverence: battle must in every way now be joined -- let what is to be, come to pass.'

Verse 63 (shiva.rudra.132.63)

ब्रह्मोवाच इत्युक्त्वा शङ्करो ब्रह्मन् नानालीलाविशारदः । विरराम मुनिश्रेष्ठ दर्शयँल्लौकिकीं गतिम्

brahmovāca ityuktvā śaṅkaro brahman nānālīlāviśāradaḥ virarāma muniśreṣṭha darśaya~llaukikīṁ gatim

Brahma said: Having said this, O brahmin, Shankara, master of many kinds of divine sport, O best of sages, fell silent, thus displaying the way of ordinary worldly conduct.
