The Battle of Ganesha with Shiva's Attendants

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.133.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच इत्युक्ता विभुना तेन निश्चयं परमं गताः । सन्नद्धास्तु तदा तत्र जग्मुश्च शिवमन्दिरम्

brahmovāca ityuktā vibhunā tena niścayaṁ paramaṁ gatāḥ sannaddhāstu tadā tatra jagmuśca śivamandiram

Thus commanded by that mighty Lord, having reached a final resolve, they, now armed, went there to Shiva's dwelling.

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.133.2)

गणेशोऽपि तथा दृष्ट्वा ह्यायातान्गणसत्तमान् । युद्धाऽऽटोपं विधायैव स्थितांश्चैवाब्रवीदिदम्

gaṇeśo'pi tathā dṛṣṭvā hyāyātāngaṇasattamān yuddhā''ṭopaṁ vidhāyaiva sthitāṁścaivābravīdidam

Ganesha too, seeing those foremost ganas arrive, and having himself made ready for battle, spoke thus to them as they stood there.

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.133.3)

गणेश उवाच आयान्तु गणपाः सर्वे शिवाज्ञापरिपालकाः । अहमेकश्च बालश्च शिवाज्ञापरिपालकः

gaṇeśa uvāca āyāntu gaṇapāḥ sarve śivājñāparipālakāḥ ahamekaśca bālaśca śivājñāparipālakaḥ

Ganesha said: 'Let all you gana-lords, keepers of Shiva's command, come. I too am one alone, a mere boy, and yet a keeper of Shiva's command.'

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.133.4)

तथापि पश्यतां देवी पार्वती सूनुजं बलम् । शिवश्च स्वगणानां तु बलं पश्यतु वै पुनः

tathāpi paśyatāṁ devī pārvatī sūnujaṁ balam śivaśca svagaṇānāṁ tu balaṁ paśyatu vai punaḥ

'Even so, let the goddess Parvati witness the strength of her own son, and let Shiva likewise witness the strength of his own attendants.'

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.133.5)

बलवद्बालयुद्धं च भवानीशिवपक्षयोः । भवद्भिश्च कृतं युद्धं पूर्वं युद्धविशारदैः

balavadbālayuddhaṁ ca bhavānīśivapakṣayoḥ bhavadbhiśca kṛtaṁ yuddhaṁ pūrvaṁ yuddhaviśāradaiḥ

'Let there be a battle, strong against a boy, between the two sides of Bhavani and Shiva. War has been waged by you before, O masters of warfare.'

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.133.6)

मया पूर्वं कृतं नैव बालोऽस्मि क्रियतेऽधुना । तथापि भवतां लज्जा गिरिजाशिवयोरिह

mayā pūrvaṁ kṛtaṁ naiva bālo'smi kriyate'dhunā tathāpi bhavatāṁ lajjā girijāśivayoriha

'I myself have never done battle before, and I am a mere child, yet now it is being forced upon me. Even so, the shame here shall fall on you, before Girija and Shiva.'

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.133.7)

ममैवं तु भवेन्नैव वैपरीत्यं भविष्यति । ममैव भवतां लज्जा गिरिजाशिवयोरिह

mamaivaṁ tu bhavennaiva vaiparītyaṁ bhaviṣyati mamaiva bhavatāṁ lajjā girijāśivayoriha

'Let it not turn out the other way for me. My shame, in truth, is your shame too, here before Girija and Shiva.'

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.133.8)

एवं ज्ञात्वा च कर्त्तव्यः समरश्च गणेश्वराः । भवद्भिः स्वामिनं दृष्ट्वा मया च मातरं तदा

evaṁ jñātvā ca karttavyaḥ samaraśca gaṇeśvarāḥ bhavadbhiḥ svāminaṁ dṛṣṭvā mayā ca mātaraṁ tadā

'Knowing this, O lords of the ganas, let battle be joined -- by you having regard for your Master, and by me for my Mother.'

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.133.9)

क्रियते कीदृशं युद्धं भवितव्यं भवत्विति । तस्य वै वारणे कोऽपि न समर्थस्त्रिलोकके

kriyate kīdṛśaṁ yuddhaṁ bhavitavyaṁ bhavatviti tasya vai vāraṇe ko'pi na samarthastrilokake

'What kind of battle is to be waged -- let what must happen, happen; for none in the three worlds is capable of preventing it.'

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.133.10)

ब्रह्मोवाच इत्येवं भर्त्सितास्ते तु दण्डभूषितबाहवः । विविधान्यायुधान्येवं धृत्वा ते च समाययुः

brahmovāca ityevaṁ bhartsitāste tu daṇḍabhūṣitabāhavaḥ vividhānyāyudhānyevaṁ dhṛtvā te ca samāyayuḥ

Brahma said: Thus provoked, they, their arms adorned with staffs, taking up various kinds of weapons, advanced.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.133.11)

घर्षयन्तस्तथा दन्तान् हुङ्कृत्य च पुनः पुनः । पश्य पश्य ब्रुवन्तश्च गणास्ते समुपागताः

gharṣayantastathā dantān huṅkṛtya ca punaḥ punaḥ paśya paśya bruvantaśca gaṇāste samupāgatāḥ

Gnashing their teeth, and roaring 'Hoo!' again and again, and saying 'Watch! Watch!', those ganas approached.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.133.12)

नन्दी प्रथममागत्य धृत्वा पादं व्यकर्षयत् । धावन्भृङ्गी द्वितीयं च पादं धृत्वा गणस्य च

nandī prathamamāgatya dhṛtvā pādaṁ vyakarṣayat dhāvanbhṛṅgī dvitīyaṁ ca pādaṁ dhṛtvā gaṇasya ca

Nandi, arriving first, seized the boy's foot and pulled at it; and Bhringi, running up, seized the gana's other foot.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.133.13)

यावत्पादे विकर्षन्तौ तावद्धस्तेन वै गणः । आहत्य हस्तयोस्ताभ्यामुत्क्षिप्तौ पादकौ स्वयम्

yāvatpāde vikarṣantau tāvaddhastena vai gaṇaḥ āhatya hastayostābhyāmutkṣiptau pādakau svayam

Even as those two dragged at his feet, that gana, striking with his own hand, threw off both his own feet from their grip by his two hands.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.133.14)

अथ देवीसुतो वीरस्सङ्गृह्य परिघं बृहत् । द्वारस्थितो गणपतिः सर्वानापोथयत्तदा

atha devīsuto vīrassaṅgṛhya parighaṁ bṛhat dvārasthito gaṇapatiḥ sarvānāpothayattadā

Then that heroic son of the goddess, Ganapati, seizing a great mace, standing at the door, struck down them all.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.133.15)

केषाञ्चित्पाणयो भिन्नाः केषाञ्चित्पृष्ठकानि च । केषाञ्चिच्च शिरांस्येव केषाञ्चिन्मस्तकानि च

keṣāñcitpāṇayo bhinnāḥ keṣāñcitpṛṣṭhakāni ca keṣāñcicca śirāṁsyeva keṣāñcinmastakāni ca

Of some, their hands were broken; of some, their backs; of some indeed their skulls, and of some their very heads.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.133.16)

केषाञ्चिज्जानुनी तत्र केषाञ्चित्स्कन्धकास्तथा । केषाञ्चिज्जानुनी तत्र केषाञ्चित्स्कन्धास्तथा । सम्मुखे चागता ये वै ते सर्वे हृदये हताः

keṣāñcijjānunī tatra keṣāñcitskandhakāstathā keṣāñcijjānunī tatra keṣāñcitskandhāstathā sammukhe cāgatā ye vai te sarve hṛdaye hatāḥ

Of some, their knees; of some, their shoulders too; again, of some their knees, of some their shoulders too -- and all who came before him face-to-face were struck upon the heart.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.133.17)

केचिच्च पतिता भूमौ केचिच्च विदिशो गताः । केषाञ्चिच्चरणौ छिन्नौ केचिच्छर्वान्तिकं गताः

kecicca patitā bhūmau kecicca vidiśo gatāḥ keṣāñciccaraṇau chinnau keciccharvāntikaṁ gatāḥ

Some fell to the ground; some fled to the intermediate directions; of some, both feet were severed; and some went off toward Shiva himself.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.133.18)

तेषां मध्ये तु कश्चिद्वै सङ्ग्रामे सम्मुखो न हि । सिंहं दृष्ट्वा यथा यान्ति मृगाश्चैव दिशो दश

teṣāṁ madhye tu kaścidvai saṅgrāme sammukho na hi siṁhaṁ dṛṣṭvā yathā yānti mṛgāścaiva diśo daśa

Among them, not one dared face him in that battle; as deer scatter to the ten directions upon seeing a lion --

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.133.19)

तथा ते च गणाः सर्वे गताश्चैव सहस्रशः । परावृत्य तथा सोऽपि सुद्वारि समुपस्थितः

tathā te ca gaṇāḥ sarve gatāścaiva sahasraśaḥ parāvṛtya tathā so'pi sudvāri samupasthitaḥ

-- so did all those ganas, by the thousands, flee likewise; and he, turning back, took his stand once more at the door.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.133.20)

कल्पान्तकरणे कालो दृश्यते च भयङ्करः । यथा तथैव दृष्टः स सर्वेषां प्रलयङ्करः

kalpāntakaraṇe kālo dṛśyate ca bhayaṅkaraḥ yathā tathaiva dṛṣṭaḥ sa sarveṣāṁ pralayaṅkaraḥ

As Kala appears terrible at the working of the world's dissolution, so did he then appear -- the very bringer of destruction to all of them.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.133.21)

एतस्मिन्समये चैव सरमेशसुरेश्वराः । प्रेरिता नारदेनेह देवाः सर्वे समागमन्

etasminsamaye caiva sarameśasureśvarāḥ preritā nāradeneha devāḥ sarve samāgaman

At that very moment, all the gods, headed by Indra and the other lords of heaven, urged on by Narada, gathered there.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.133.22)

समब्रुवंस्तदा सर्वे शिवस्य हितकाम्यया । पुरः स्थित्वा शिवं नत्वा ह्याज्ञां देहि प्रभो इति

samabruvaṁstadā sarve śivasya hitakāmyayā puraḥ sthitvā śivaṁ natvā hyājñāṁ dehi prabho iti

All of them then spoke together, out of desire for Shiva's own good, and, standing before him, bowing to Shiva, said: 'Give your command, O Lord.'

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.133.23)

त्वं परब्रह्म सर्वेशः सर्वे च तव सेवकाः । सृष्टेः कर्ता सदा भर्ता संहर्ता परमेश्वरः

tvaṁ parabrahma sarveśaḥ sarve ca tava sevakāḥ sṛṣṭeḥ kartā sadā bhartā saṁhartā parameśvaraḥ

'You are the Supreme Brahman, the Lord of all, and all of us are your servants; you are ever the creator, sustainer, and destroyer of creation, the Supreme Lord.'

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.133.24)

रजस्सत्त्वतमोरूपो लीलया निर्गुणः स्वतः । का लीला रचिता चाद्य तामिदानीं वद प्रभो

rajassattvatamorūpo līlayā nirguṇaḥ svataḥ kā līlā racitā cādya tāmidānīṁ vada prabho

'Taking the form of rajas, sattva, and tamas through your own play, though by nature beyond all qualities -- what sport have you now devised? Tell us now, O Lord.'

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.133.25)

ब्रह्मोवाच इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तेषां मुनिश्रेष्ठ महेश्वरः । गणान् भिन्नाँस्तदा दृष्ट्वा तेभ्यस्सर्वं न्यवेदयत्

brahmovāca ityākarṇya vacasteṣāṁ muniśreṣṭha maheśvaraḥ gaṇān bhinnā~stadā dṛṣṭvā tebhyassarvaṁ nyavedayat

Brahma said: O best of sages, hearing their words, Maheshvara, seeing his ganas broken and scattered, then told them everything.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.133.26)

अथ सर्वेश्वरस्तत्र शङ्करो मुनिसत्तम । विहस्य गिरिजानाथो ब्रह्माणं मामुवाच ह

atha sarveśvarastatra śaṅkaro munisattama vihasya girijānātho brahmāṇaṁ māmuvāca ha

Then, O best of sages, Shankara, the Lord of all there, Girija's own husband, smiling, spoke to me, Brahma.

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.133.27)

शिव उवाच ब्रह्मञ्छृणु मम द्वारि बाल एकः समास्थितः । महाबलो यष्टिपाणिर्गेहावेशनिवारकः

śiva uvāca brahmañchṛṇu mama dvāri bāla ekaḥ samāsthitaḥ mahābalo yaṣṭipāṇirgehāveśanivārakaḥ

Shiva said: 'O Brahma, hear me: at my door there stands a single boy, of tremendous strength, staff in hand, who bars the way into the house.'

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.133.28)

महाप्रहारकर्ताऽसौ मत्पार्षदविघातकः । पराजयः कृतस्तेन मद्गणानां बलादिह

mahāprahārakartā'sau matpārṣadavighātakaḥ parājayaḥ kṛtastena madgaṇānāṁ balādiha

'He deals mighty blows, that destroyer of my own attendants; by him my own ganas have here been defeated by force.'

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.133.29)

ब्रह्मन् त्वयैव गन्तव्यं प्रसाद्योऽयं महाबलः । यथा ब्रह्मन्नयः स्याद्वै तथा कार्यं त्वया विधे

brahman tvayaiva gantavyaṁ prasādyo'yaṁ mahābalaḥ yathā brahmannayaḥ syādvai tathā kāryaṁ tvayā vidhe

'O Brahma, you yourself should go and win over this mighty one with kindness. Do, O Brahma, O Vidhi, whatever course is proper.'

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.133.30)

ब्रह्मोवाच इत्याकर्ण्य प्रभोर्वाक्यमज्ञात्वाऽज्ञानमोहितः । तदीयनिकटं तात सर्वैरृषिवरैरयाम्

brahmovāca ityākarṇya prabhorvākyamajñātvā'jñānamohitaḥ tadīyanikaṭaṁ tāta sarvairṛṣivarairayām

Brahma said: Hearing the Lord's words, though not understanding, and deluded by my own ignorance, O dear one, I went to his presence, together with all the foremost sages.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.133.31)

समायान्तं च मां दृष्ट्वा स गणेशो महाबली । क्रोधं कृत्वा समभ्येत्य मम श्मश्रूण्यवाकिरत्

samāyāntaṁ ca māṁ dṛṣṭvā sa gaṇeśo mahābalī krodhaṁ kṛtvā samabhyetya mama śmaśrūṇyavākirat

Seeing me approach, that mighty Ganesha, in anger, came right up to me and scattered my very beard.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.133.32)

क्षम्यतां क्षम्यतां देव न युद्धार्थं समागतः । ब्राह्मणोऽहमनुग्राह्यः शान्तिकर्तानुपद्रवः

kṣamyatāṁ kṣamyatāṁ deva na yuddhārthaṁ samāgataḥ brāhmaṇo'hamanugrāhyaḥ śāntikartānupadravaḥ

'Forgive me, forgive me, O God! I have not come here for the sake of battle. I am a brahmin, worthy of grace, one who works for peace, free of any malice.'

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.133.33)

इत्येवं ब्रुवति ब्रह्मंस्तावत्परिघमाददे । स गणेशो महावीरो बालोऽबालपराक्रमः

ityevaṁ bruvati brahmaṁstāvatparighamādade sa gaṇeśo mahāvīro bālo'bālaparākramaḥ

Even as I was speaking thus, O brahmin, that great hero Ganesha, a mere boy in years yet of no boyish valor, took up his mace.

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.133.34)

गृहीतपरिघं दृष्ट्वा तं गणेशं महाबलम् । पलायनपरो यातस्त्वहं द्रुततरं तदा

gṛhītaparighaṁ dṛṣṭvā taṁ gaṇeśaṁ mahābalam palāyanaparo yātastvahaṁ drutataraṁ tadā

Seeing that mighty Ganesha with his mace raised, I then made off in flight, as fast as I could.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.133.35)

यात यात ब्रुवन्तस्ते परिघेन हतास्तदा । स्वयं च पतिताः केचित्केचित्तेन निपातिताः

yāta yāta bruvantaste parighena hatāstadā svayaṁ ca patitāḥ kecitkecittena nipātitāḥ

Crying 'Go! Go!' they were then struck down by his mace; some fell of their own accord, and some were felled by him.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.133.36)

केचिच्च शिवसामीप्यं गत्वा तत्क्षणमात्रतः । शिवं विज्ञापयाञ्चक्रुस्तद्वृत्तान्तमशेषतः

kecicca śivasāmīpyaṁ gatvā tatkṣaṇamātrataḥ śivaṁ vijñāpayāñcakrustadvṛttāntamaśeṣataḥ

Some, going to Shiva's presence at that very instant, made known to him the whole account in full.

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.133.37)

तथाविधांश्च तान् दृष्ट्वा तद्वृत्तान्तं निशम्य सः । अपारमादधे कोपं हरो लीलाविशारदः

tathāvidhāṁśca tān dṛṣṭvā tadvṛttāntaṁ niśamya saḥ apāramādadhe kopaṁ haro līlāviśāradaḥ

Seeing them in that state, and hearing that account, Hara, master of divine sport, was filled with limitless wrath.

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.133.38)

इन्द्रादिकान्देवगणान् षण्मुखप्रवरान् गणान् । भूतप्रेतपिशाचांश्च सर्वानादेशयत्तदा

indrādikāndevagaṇān ṣaṇmukhapravarān gaṇān bhūtapretapiśācāṁśca sarvānādeśayattadā

He then commanded all of them -- Indra and the other hosts of gods, the foremost ganas headed by Shanmukha, and the bhutas, pretas, and pishachas.

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.133.39)

ते सर्वे च यथायोग्यं गतास्ते सर्वतो दिशम् । तं गणं हन्तुकामा हि शिवाज्ञप्ता उदायुधाः

te sarve ca yathāyogyaṁ gatāste sarvato diśam taṁ gaṇaṁ hantukāmā hi śivājñaptā udāyudhāḥ

All of them, each as befitted, went from every direction, weapons raised, commanded by Shiva, intending to slay that gana.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.133.40)

यस्य यस्यायुधं यच्च तत्तत्सर्वं विशेषतः । तद् गणेशोपरि बलात्समागत्य विमोचितम्

yasya yasyāyudhaṁ yacca tattatsarvaṁ viśeṣataḥ tad gaṇeśopari balātsamāgatya vimocitam

Whatever weapon each one possessed -- every single one of them was hurled forcefully upon Ganesha, having come together.

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.133.41)

हाहाकारो महानासीत् त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे । त्रिलोकस्था जनाः सर्वे संशयं परमं गताः

hāhākāro mahānāsīt trailokye sacarācare trilokasthā janāḥ sarve saṁśayaṁ paramaṁ gatāḥ

A great cry of woe arose throughout the three worlds, with all that moves and does not move; all the people dwelling in the three worlds fell into the utmost doubt.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.133.42)

न यातं ब्रह्मणोऽप्यायुर्ब्रह्माण्डं क्षयमेति हि । अकाले च तथा नूनं शिवेच्छावशतः स्वयम्

na yātaṁ brahmaṇo'pyāyurbrahmāṇḍaṁ kṣayameti hi akāle ca tathā nūnaṁ śivecchāvaśataḥ svayam

Even Brahma's own lifespan had not yet run its course, and yet the cosmic egg itself seemed to be heading to destruction -- untimely, indeed, and solely by the sway of Shiva's own will.

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.133.43)

ते सर्वे चागतास्तत्र षण्मुखाद्याश्च ये पुनः । देवा व्यर्थायुधा जाता आश्चर्यं परमं गताः

te sarve cāgatāstatra ṣaṇmukhādyāśca ye punaḥ devā vyarthāyudhā jātā āścaryaṁ paramaṁ gatāḥ

All of them who had come there, Shanmukha and the others among the gods, found their weapons rendered useless, and fell into the utmost wonder.

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.133.44)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे देवी जगदम्बा विबोधना । ज्ञात्वा तच्चरितं सर्वमपारं क्रोधमादधे

etasminnantare devī jagadambā vibodhanā jñātvā taccaritaṁ sarvamapāraṁ krodhamādadhe

Meanwhile the Goddess, Mother of the universe, who awakens all, learning of that entire happening, was filled with limitless wrath.

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.133.45)

शक्तिद्वयं तदा तत्र तया देव्या मुनीश्वर । निर्मितं स्वगणस्यैव सर्वसाहाय्यहेतवे

śaktidvayaṁ tadā tatra tayā devyā munīśvara nirmitaṁ svagaṇasyaiva sarvasāhāyyahetave

O lord of sages, that goddess then created two shaktis there, for the sake of aiding her own gana in every way.

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.133.46)

एका प्रचण्डरूपं च धृत्वातिष्ठन्महामुने । श्यामपर्वतसङ्काशं विस्तीर्य मुखगह्वरम्

ekā pracaṇḍarūpaṁ ca dhṛtvātiṣṭhanmahāmune śyāmaparvatasaṅkāśaṁ vistīrya mukhagahvaram

O great sage, one of them took a most fierce form, dark as a mountain, standing there with her cavernous mouth opened wide.

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.133.47)

एका विद्युत्स्वरूपा च बहुहस्तसमन्विता । भयङ्करा महादेवी दुष्टदण्डविधायिनी

ekā vidyutsvarūpā ca bahuhastasamanvitā bhayaṅkarā mahādevī duṣṭadaṇḍavidhāyinī

The other was in the very form of lightning, endowed with many arms -- a terrible great goddess, ordained to punish the wicked.

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.133.48)

आयुधानि च सर्वाणि मोचितानि सुरैर्गणैः । गृहीत्वा स्वमुखे तानि ताभ्यां शीघ्रं च चिक्षिपे

āyudhāni ca sarvāṇi mocitāni surairgaṇaiḥ gṛhītvā svamukhe tāni tābhyāṁ śīghraṁ ca cikṣipe

All the weapons hurled by the gods and their hosts were seized by those two, taken into their own mouths, and swiftly cast away.

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.133.49)

देवायुधं न दृश्येत परिघः परितः पुनः । एवं ताभ्यां कृतं तत्र चरितं परमाद्भुतम्

devāyudhaṁ na dṛśyeta parighaḥ paritaḥ punaḥ evaṁ tābhyāṁ kṛtaṁ tatra caritaṁ paramādbhutam

Not one weapon of the gods, not even the mace, was to be seen anywhere any longer. Thus by those two was performed there a most wondrous deed.

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.133.50)

एको बालोऽखिलं सैन्यं लोडयामास दुस्तरम् । यथा गिरिवरेणैव लोडितः सागरः पुरा

eko bālo'khilaṁ sainyaṁ loḍayāmāsa dustaram yathā girivareṇaiva loḍitaḥ sāgaraḥ purā

That single boy churned up the entire, unassailable host, just as long ago the ocean was churned by the best of mountains.

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.133.51)

एकेन निहताः सर्वे शक्राद्या निर्जरास्तथा । शङ्करस्य गणाश्चैव व्याकुला अभवंस्तदा

ekena nihatāḥ sarve śakrādyā nirjarāstathā śaṅkarasya gaṇāścaiva vyākulā abhavaṁstadā

By him alone, all of them -- Indra and the other immortals, and Shankara's own attendants as well -- were struck down, and fell into confusion.

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.133.52)

अथ सर्वे मिलित्वा ते निःश्वस्य च मुहुर्मुहुः । परस्परं समूचुस्ते तत्प्रहारसमाकुलाः

atha sarve militvā te niḥśvasya ca muhurmuhuḥ parasparaṁ samūcuste tatprahārasamākulāḥ

Then, all gathering together, sighing heavily again and again, bewildered by his blows, they spoke to one another.

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.133.53)

देवगणा ऊचुः किं कर्तव्यं क्व गन्तव्यं न ज्ञायन्ते दिशो दश । परिघं भ्रामयत्येष सव्यापसव्यमेव च

devagaṇā ūcuḥ kiṁ kartavyaṁ kva gantavyaṁ na jñāyante diśo daśa parighaṁ bhrāmayatyeṣa savyāpasavyameva ca

The hosts of gods said: 'What must be done, where must we go -- we cannot even tell the ten directions apart. He whirls his mace to the left and to the right alike.'

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.133.54)

ब्रह्मोवाच एतत्कालेऽप्सरः श्रेष्ठाः पुष्पचन्दनपाणयः । ऋषयश्च त्वदाद्या हि येऽतियुद्धेऽतिलालसाः

brahmovāca etatkāle'psaraḥ śreṣṭhāḥ puṣpacandanapāṇayaḥ ṛṣayaśca tvadādyā hi ye'tiyuddhe'tilālasāḥ

Brahma said: At that time, the finest apsaras, flowers and sandal in hand, and the sages, headed by you [Narada] yourself, all most eager to witness that mighty battle --

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.133.55)

ते सर्वे च समाजग्मुर्युद्धसन्दर्शनाय वै । पूरितो व्योम सन्मार्गस्तैस्तदा मुनिसत्तम

te sarve ca samājagmuryuddhasandarśanāya vai pūrito vyoma sanmārgastaistadā munisattama

-- all of them gathered together to witness the battle; and the very pathway of the sky, O best of sages, was then filled by them.

Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.133.56)

तास्ते दृष्ट्वा रणं तं वै महाविस्मयमागताः । ईदृशं परमं युद्धं न दृष्टं चैकदापि हि

tāste dṛṣṭvā raṇaṁ taṁ vai mahāvismayamāgatāḥ īdṛśaṁ paramaṁ yuddhaṁ na dṛṣṭaṁ caikadāpi hi

Seeing that battle, they were filled with the greatest astonishment: never before, not even once, had so supreme a battle been witnessed.

Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.133.57)

पृथिवी कम्पिता तत्र समुद्रसहिता तदा । पर्वताः पतिताश्चैव चक्रुः सङ्ग्रामसम्भवम्

pṛthivī kampitā tatra samudrasahitā tadā parvatāḥ patitāścaiva cakruḥ saṅgrāmasambhavam

The earth trembled there, together with the oceans, and the mountains too fell, all caused by that battle.

Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.133.58)

द्यौर्ग्रहर्क्षगणैर्घूर्ण्णा सर्वे व्याकुलतां गताः । देवाः पलायिताःसर्वे गणाश्च सकलास्तदा

dyaurgraharkṣagaṇairghūrṇṇā sarve vyākulatāṁ gatāḥ devāḥ palāyitāḥsarve gaṇāśca sakalāstadā

The sky, with its planets and its constellations, reeled; all fell into confusion; and all the gods, and all the ganas too, fled at that time.

Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.133.59)

केवलं षण्मुखस्तत्र नापलायत विक्रमी । महावीरस्तदा सर्वानावार्य पुरतः स्थितः

kevalaṁ ṣaṇmukhastatra nāpalāyata vikramī mahāvīrastadā sarvānāvārya purataḥ sthitaḥ

Only Shanmukha there did not flee, that valiant one; that great hero then held back all the others and stood in front.

Verse 60 (shiva.rudra.133.60)

शक्तिद्वयेन तद्युद्धे सर्वे च निष्फलीकृताः । सर्वास्त्राणि निकृत्तानि सङ्क्षिप्तान्यमरैर्गणैः

śaktidvayena tadyuddhe sarve ca niṣphalīkṛtāḥ sarvāstrāṇi nikṛttāni saṅkṣiptānyamarairgaṇaiḥ

By those two shaktis, in that battle, all of them were rendered powerless; all the weapons hurled by the immortals and the ganas were cut apart and shattered.

Verse 61 (shiva.rudra.133.61)

येऽवस्थिताश्च ते सर्वे शिवस्यान्तिकमागताः । देवाः पलायिताः सर्वे गणाश्च सकलास्तदा

ye'vasthitāśca te sarve śivasyāntikamāgatāḥ devāḥ palāyitāḥ sarve gaṇāśca sakalāstadā

Whoever remained then came to Shiva's own presence; all the gods had fled, and all the ganas too.

Verse 62 (shiva.rudra.133.62)

ते सर्वे मिलिताश्चैव मुहुर्नत्वा शिवं तदा । अब्रुवन्वचनं क्षिप्रं कोऽयं गणवरः प्रभो

te sarve militāścaiva muhurnatvā śivaṁ tadā abruvanvacanaṁ kṣipraṁ ko'yaṁ gaṇavaraḥ prabho

All of them, gathering together, bowed again and again to Shiva, and swiftly spoke: 'Who is this foremost of ganas, O Lord?'

Verse 63 (shiva.rudra.133.63)

पुरा चैव श्रुतं युद्धमिदानीं बहुधा पुनः । दृश्यते न श्रुतं दृष्टमीदृशं तु कदाचन

purā caiva śrutaṁ yuddhamidānīṁ bahudhā punaḥ dṛśyate na śrutaṁ dṛṣṭamīdṛśaṁ tu kadācana

'Even the battles heard of in ancient times, and told of in many ways since -- never has such a thing as this been heard of or seen.'

Verse 64 (shiva.rudra.133.64)

किञ्चिद्विचार्यतां देव त्वन्यथा न जयो भवेत् । त्वमेव रक्षकः स्वामिन्ब्रह्माण्डस्य न संशयः

kiñcidvicāryatāṁ deva tvanyathā na jayo bhavet tvameva rakṣakaḥ svāminbrahmāṇḍasya na saṁśayaḥ

'Consider well, O God, for otherwise victory shall not be ours. You alone are the protector, O Lord, of this cosmic egg -- of this there is no doubt.'

Verse 65 (shiva.rudra.133.65)

ब्रह्मोवाच इत्येवं तद्वचः श्रुत्वा रुद्रः परमकोपनः । कोपं कृत्वा च तत्रैव जगाम स्वगणैः सह

brahmovāca ityevaṁ tadvacaḥ śrutvā rudraḥ paramakopanaḥ kopaṁ kṛtvā ca tatraiva jagāma svagaṇaiḥ saha

Brahma said: Hearing these words, Rudra, filled with the utmost fury, and consumed with wrath, went there himself, together with his own attendants.

Verse 66 (shiva.rudra.133.66)

देवसैन्यं च तत्सर्वं विष्णुना चक्रिणा सह । समुत्सवं महत्कृत्वा शिवस्यानुजगाम ह

devasainyaṁ ca tatsarvaṁ viṣṇunā cakriṇā saha samutsavaṁ mahatkṛtvā śivasyānujagāma ha

And that entire host of the gods, together with discus-bearing Vishnu, raising a great tumult, followed after Shiva.

Verse 67 (shiva.rudra.133.67)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे भक्त्या नमस्कृत्य महेश्वरम् । अब्रवीन्नारद त्वं वै देवदेवं कृताञ्जलिः

etasminnantare bhaktyā namaskṛtya maheśvaram abravīnnārada tvaṁ vai devadevaṁ kṛtāñjaliḥ

At that very moment, you, O Narada, having bowed with devotion to Maheshvara, spoke, hands joined, to the God of gods.

Verse 68 (shiva.rudra.133.68)

नारद उवाच देवदेव महादेव शृणु मद्वचनं विभो । त्वमेव सर्वगस्स्वामी नानालीलाविशारदः

nārada uvāca devadeva mahādeva śṛṇu madvacanaṁ vibho tvameva sarvagassvāmī nānālīlāviśāradaḥ

Narada said: 'O God of gods, O Mahadeva, hear my word, O mighty one. You alone are the all-pervading Master, skilled in every kind of sport.'

Verse 69 (shiva.rudra.133.69)

त्वया कृत्वा महालीलां गणगर्वोऽपहारितः । अस्मै दत्त्वा बलं भूरि देवगर्वश्च शङ्कर

tvayā kṛtvā mahālīlāṁ gaṇagarvo'pahāritaḥ asmai dattvā balaṁ bhūri devagarvaśca śaṅkara

'By enacting this great sport of yours, the pride of your own ganas has been taken away, having given this boy such abundant strength -- and the pride of the gods too, O Shankara.'

Verse 70 (shiva.rudra.133.70)

दर्शितं भुवने नाथ स्वमेव बलमद्भुतम् । स्वतन्त्रेण त्वया शम्भो सर्वगर्वप्रहारिणा

darśitaṁ bhuvane nātha svameva balamadbhutam svatantreṇa tvayā śambho sarvagarvaprahāriṇā

'You have shown to the world, O Lord, your own wondrous power, being wholly independent, O Shambhu, the very destroyer of all pride.'

Verse 71 (shiva.rudra.133.71)

इदानीं न कुरुष्वेश तां लीलां भक्तवत्सलः । स्वगणानमरांश्चापि सुसन्मान्याभिवर्द्धय

idānīṁ na kuruṣveśa tāṁ līlāṁ bhaktavatsalaḥ svagaṇānamarāṁścāpi susanmānyābhivarddhaya

'Now, O Lord, cease this sport, O you who are tender to your devotees; rather, honor and exalt your own ganas and the immortals as well.'

Verse 72 (shiva.rudra.133.72)

इमं न खेलयेदानीं जहि ब्रह्मपदप्रद । इत्युक्त्वा नारद त्वं वै ह्यन्तर्द्धानं गतस्तदा

imaṁ na khelayedānīṁ jahi brahmapadaprada ityuktvā nārada tvaṁ vai hyantarddhānaṁ gatastadā

'Do not sport with this boy any further now, O bestower of Brahma's own station.' Having said this, you, O Narada, then disappeared from sight.
