Chapter 134All chaptersChapter 136

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.135.1)

nārada uvāca brahman vada mahāprājña tad vṛttānte'khile śrute kimakārṣīnmahādevī śrotumicchāmi tattvataḥ

Narada said: O Brahman of great wisdom, having heard that whole account, tell me — what did the great Goddess do? I truly wish to hear it.

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.135.2)

brahmovāca śrūyatāṁ muniśārdūla kathayāmyadya taddhruvam caritaṁ jagadambāyā yajjātaṁ tadanantaram

Brahma said: Listen, O tiger among sages; I shall now tell you for certain what befell the Mother of the World thereafter.

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.135.3)

mṛdaṅgānpaṭahāṁścaiva gaṇāścāvādayaṁstathā mahotsavaṁ tadā cakrurhate tasmingaṇādhipe

The ganas played mridangas and drums, and held a great festival then, when that lord of the ganas had been slain.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.135.4)

śivo'pi tacchiraśchitvā yāvadduḥkhamupādade tāvacca girijā devī cukrodhāti munīśvara

O lord of sages, even as Shiva, having severed his head, began to feel sorrow, at that very moment the goddess Girija grew exceedingly enraged.

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.135.5)

kiṁ karomi kva gacchāmi hāhā duḥkhamupāgatam kathaṁ duḥkhaṁ vinaśyetāsyā'tiduḥkhaṁ mamādhunā

'What shall I do? Where shall I go? Alas, sorrow has come upon me! How shall this exceeding sorrow of mine now be destroyed?'

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.135.6)

matsuto nāśitaścādya devaiḥ sarvairgaṇaistathā sarvāṁstānnāśayiṣyāmi pralayaṁ vā karomyaham

'My son has today been destroyed by all the gods and the ganas together; I shall destroy them all, or bring about the very dissolution of the world!'

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.135.7)

ityevaṁ duḥkhitā sā ca śaktīḥ śatasahasraśaḥ nirmame tatkṣaṇaṁ kruddhā sarvalokamaheśvarī

Thus grieving, the Sovereign Goddess of all worlds, in her wrath, created in that very instant hundreds of thousands of Shaktis.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.135.8)

nirmitāstā namaskṛtya jagadambāṁ śivāṁ tadā jājvalyamānā hyavadanmātarādiśyatāmiti

Those created ones, bowing to the Mother of the World, blazing with fire themselves, said: 'Mother, command us!'

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.135.9)

tacchutvā śambhuśaktiḥ sā prakṛtiḥ krodhatatparā pratyuvāca tu tāḥ sarvā mahāmāyā munīśvara

Hearing this, O lord of sages, she — Shambhu's own Shakti, the Prakriti, the great Maya, intent on wrath — replied to them all.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.135.10)

devyuvāca he śaktayo'dhunā devyo yuṣmābhirmannideśataḥ pralayaścātra karttavyo nātra kāryā vicāraṇā

The Goddess said: 'O Shaktis, O goddesses, now by my command you must bring about destruction here — there is to be no deliberation in this.'

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.135.11)

devāṁścaiva ṛṣīṁścaiva yakṣarākṣasakāṁstathā asmadīyānparāṁścaiva sakhyo bhakṣata vai haṭhāt

'Devour by force, O companions, the gods, the sages, the yakshas and rakshasas alike — whether they be ours or belonging to others.'

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.135.12)

brahmovāca tadājñaptāśca tāḥ sarvāḥ śaktayaḥ krodhatatparāḥ devādīnāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ saṁhāraṁ kartumudyatāḥ

Brahma said: Thus commanded, all those Shaktis, intent upon wrath, made ready to bring about the destruction of the gods and of all beings.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.135.13)

yathā ca tṛṇasaṁhāramanalaḥ kurute tathā evaṁ tāḥ śaktayaḥ sarvāḥ saṁhāraṁ kartumudyatāḥ

Just as fire consumes a heap of straw, so did all those Shaktis make ready to bring about destruction.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.135.14)

gaṇapo vātha viṣṇurvā brahmā vā śaṅkarastathā indro vā yakṣarājo vā skando vā sūrya eva vā

Be it Ganapa, or Vishnu, or Brahma, or Shankara, or Indra, or the King of the Yakshas, or Skanda, or even Surya—

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.135.15)

sarveṣāṁ caiva saṁhāraṁ kurvanti sma nirantaram yatra yatra tu dṛśyeta tatra tatrāpi śaktayaḥ

—they brought about the destruction of them all without pause; wherever anyone was seen, there too the Shaktis appeared.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.135.16)

karālī kubjakā khañjā lambaśīrṣā hyanekaśaḥ haste dhṛtvā tu devāṁśca mukhe caivākṣipaṁstadā

Terrible, hunchbacked, lame, with hanging heads — in many forms — they seized the gods in their hands and hurled them into their mouths.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.135.17)

taṁ saṁhāraṁ tadā dṛṣṭvā haro brahmā tathā hariḥ indrādayo'khilā devā gaṇāśca ṛṣayastathā

Seeing that destruction, Hara, Brahma, and Hari, Indra and all the other gods, the ganas, and the sages—

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.135.18)

kiṁ kariṣyati sā devī saṁhāraṁ vāpyakālataḥ iti saṁśayamāpannā jīvanāśā hatā'bhavat

—fell into doubt, wondering what further that Goddess would do, whether an untimely destruction, and, despairing of their lives, they became stricken.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.135.19)

sarve ca militāśceme kiṁ karttavyaṁ vicintyatām evaṁ vicārayantaste tūrṇamūcuḥ parasparam

All of them, gathering together, said, 'Let it be considered what is to be done' — thus deliberating, they quickly spoke to one another.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.135.20)

yadā ca girijā devī prasannā hi bhavediha tadā caiva bhavetsvāsthyaṁ nānyathā koṭi yatnataḥ

'Only when the goddess Girija becomes truly pleased will there be peace here — not otherwise, even by a myriad efforts.'

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.135.21)

śivo'pi duḥkhamāpanno laukikīṁ gatimāśritaḥ mohayansakalāṁstatra nānālīlāviśāradaḥ

Shiva too, overcome with sorrow, resorting to worldly conduct, skilled in manifold divine play, sought there to console them all.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.135.22)

sarveṣāṁ caiva devānāṁ kaṭirbhagnā yadā tadā śivā krodhamayī sākṣād gantuṁ na pura utsahet

When the very resolve of all the gods had broken, Shiva, utterly wrathful, would not even venture to go before them.

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.135.23)

svīyo vā parakīyo vā devo vā dānavo'pi vā gaṇo vāpi ca dikpālo yakṣo vā kinnaro muniḥ

Be he one's own or another's, a god or even a demon, a gana, a guardian of the quarters, a yaksha, a kinnara, or a sage—

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.135.24)

viṣṇurvāpi tathā brahmā śaṅkaraśca tathā prabhuḥ na kaścidgirijāgre ca sthātuṁ śakto'bhavanmune

—be it even Vishnu, or Brahma, or Lord Shankara himself, O sage, none was able to stand before Girija.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.135.25)

jājvalyamānaṁ tattejaḥsarvato dāhi te'khilāḥ dṛṣṭvā bhītatarā āsan sarve dūrataraṁ sthitāḥ

Seeing that blazing splendor of hers, burning on every side, all of them grew utterly terrified and withdrew to a great distance.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.135.26)

etasminsamaye tatra nārado divyadarśanaḥ āgatastvaṁ mune devagaṇānāṁ sukhahetave

At that time, O sage of divine vision, you, Narada, came there for the welfare of the hosts of gods.

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.135.27)

brahmāṇaṁ māṁ bhavaṁ viṣṇuṁ śaṅkaraṁ ca praṇamya saḥ samāgatya militvoce vicārya kāryameva vā

Having bowed to Brahma, Bhava, Vishnu, and Shankara, he came near, and, joining the gods, spoke after considering what was to be done.

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.135.28)

sarve sammantrayāñcakrustvayā devā mahātmanā duḥkhaśāntiḥ kathaṁ syādvai samūcustata eva te

All the gods, together with you, O great soul, took counsel: 'How may this sorrow be ended?' — thus they spoke among themselves.

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.135.29)

yāvacca girijā devī kṛpāṁ naiva kariṣyati tāvannaiva sukhaṁ syādvai nātra kāryā vicāraṇā

'As long as the goddess Girija shows no mercy, there can be no happiness at all — of this there is no doubt.'

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.135.30)

ṛṣayo hi tvadādyāśca gatāste vai śivāntikam sarve prasādayāmāsuḥ krodhaśāntyai tadā śivām

Then the sages, beginning with you, went to the presence of Shiva, and all sought to appease the Goddess so as to calm her wrath.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.135.31)

punaḥ punaḥ praṇemuśca stutvā stotrairanekaśaḥ sarve prasādayanprītyā procurdevagaṇājñayā

They bowed again and again, praising her with many hymns, and all, seeking to please her with devotion, spoke at the bidding of the hosts of gods.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.135.32)

surarṣaya ūcuḥ jagadamba namastubhyaṁ śivāyai te namo'stu te caṇḍikāyai namastubhyaṁ kalyāṇyai ca namo'stu te

The divine sages said: 'O Mother of the World, salutation to you! Salutation to you, O Shiva! Salutation to you, O Chandika! Salutation to you, O Kalyani!'

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.135.33)

ādiśaktistvamevāmba sarvasṛṣṭikarī sadā tvameva pālinī śaktistvameva pralayaṅkarī

'You alone, O Mother, are the primordial Shakti, ever the creator of all; you alone are the sustaining power, and you alone bring about dissolution.'

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.135.34)

prasannā bhava deveśi śāntiṁ kuru namo'stu te sarvaṁ hi vikalaṁ devi trijagattava kopataḥ

'Be gracious, O Sovereign of the gods; grant peace — salutation to you! For, O Goddess, the whole of the three worlds has fallen into distress through your wrath.'

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.135.35)

brahmovāca evaṁ stutā parā devī ṛṣibhiśca tvadādibhiḥ kruddhadṛṣṭyā tadā tāṁśca kiñcinnovāca sā śivā

Brahma said: Thus praised by the sages beginning with you, the supreme Goddess Shiva, looking upon them with an angry gaze, said nothing to them.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.135.36)

tadā ca ṛṣayaḥ sarve natvā taccaraṇāmbujam punarūcuśśivāṁ bhaktyā kṛtāñjalipuṭāḥ śanaiḥ

Then all the sages, bowing to her lotus feet, with joined palms, spoke again to Shiva softly, with devotion.

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.135.37)

kṣamyatāṁ kṣamyatāṁ devi saṁhāro jāyate'dhunā tava svāmī sthitaścātra paśya paśya tamambike

'Forgive us, forgive us, O Goddess! This destruction is happening even now — your own Lord stands here; behold him, behold him, O Ambika!'

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.135.38)

vayaṁ ke ca ime devā viṣṇubrahmādayastathā prajāśca bhavadīyāśca kṛtāñjalipuṭāḥ sthitāḥ

'What are we, and what are these gods — Vishnu, Brahma, and the rest? We stand here, your own children, with joined palms.'

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.135.39)

kṣantavyaścāparādho vai sarveṣāṁ parameśvari sarve hi vikalāścādya śāntiṁ teṣāṁ śive kuru

'Let the fault of us all be forgiven, O supreme Goddess; for all are today in distress — grant them peace, O Shiva.'

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.135.40)

brahmovāca ityuktvā ṛṣayaḥsarve sudīnataramākulāḥ santasthire caṇḍikāgre kṛtāñjalipuṭāstadā

Brahma said: Having spoken thus, all the sages, utterly humbled and distressed, stood then before Chandika with joined palms.

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.135.41)

evaṁ śrutvā vacasteṣāṁ prasannā caṇḍikā'bhavat pratyuvāca ṛṣīṁstānvai karuṇāviṣṭamānasā

Hearing their words thus, Chandika became gracious, and, her mind filled with compassion, replied to those sages.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.135.42)

devyuvāca matputro yadi jīveta tadā saṁharaṇaṁ na hi yathā hi bhavatāṁ madhye pūjyo'yaṁ ca bhaviṣyati

The Goddess said: 'If my son should live, then indeed there shall be no destruction — provided that he shall become worshipped among you all.'

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.135.43)

sarvādhyakṣo bhavedadya yūyaṁ kuruta tadyadi tadā śāntirbhavelloke nānyathā sukhamāpsyatha

'Let him become today the overlord of all — if you do this, then there shall be peace in the world; not otherwise shall you attain happiness.'

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.135.44)

brahmovāca ityuktāste tadā sarve ṛṣayo yuṣmadādayaḥ tebhyo devebhya āgatya sarvaṁ vṛttaṁ nyavedayan

Brahma said: Thus addressed, all those sages, beginning with you, went to those gods and reported the whole matter.

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.135.45)

te ca sarve tathā śrutvā śaṅkarāya nyavedayan natvā prāñjalayo dīnāḥ śakraprabhṛtayaḥ surāḥ

Hearing this, all of them reported it to Shankara; and the humbled gods, headed by Indra, bowed with joined palms.

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.135.46)

provāceti surāñchrutvā śivaścāpi tathā punaḥ karttavyaṁ ca tathā sarvalokasvāsthyaṁ bhavediha

Hearing this from the gods, Shiva then spoke again: 'This must indeed be done, so that the well-being of all the worlds may come about here.'

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.135.47)

uttarasyāṁ punaryāta prathamaṁ yo milediha tacchiraśca samāhṛtya yojanīyaṁ kalevare

'Go again to the north; whatever creature is first encountered there, bring its head, and it shall be joined to the body.'

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.135.48)

brahmovāca tatastaistatkṛtaṁ sarvaṁ śivājñāpratipālakaiḥ kalevaraṁ samānīya prakṣālya vidhivacca tat

Brahma said: Then all this was done by them, obedient to Shiva's command; having brought the body, and having duly washed it—

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.135.49)

pūjayitvā punaste vai gatāścodaṅmukhāstadā prathamaṁ militastatra hastī cāpyekadantakaḥ

—and having worshipped it, they then went forth facing north; and there the first they encountered was an elephant with a single tusk.

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.135.50)

tacchiraśca tadā nītvā tatra te'yojayan dhruvam saṁyojya devatāḥsarvāḥ śivaṁ viṣṇuṁ vidhiṁ tadā

Then, bringing its head, they firmly joined it there, all the gods together with Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma uniting it to the body.

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.135.51)

praṇamya vacanaṁ procurbhavaduktaṁ kṛtaṁ ca naḥ anantaraṁ ca tatkāryaṁ bhavatādbhavaśeṣitam

Bowing, they said: 'What you commanded has been done by us; may whatever remains of this task now be accomplished by you.'

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.135.52)

tataste tu virejuśca pārṣadāśca surāḥ sukham atha tadvacanaṁ śrutvā śivoktaṁ paryapālayan

Then the attendants and the gods rejoiced happily; and hearing that word, they carried out what Shiva had commanded.

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.135.53)

ūcuste ca tadā tatra brahmaviṣṇusurāstathā praṇamyeśaṁ śivaṁ devaṁ svaprabhuṁ guṇavarjitam

Then Brahma, Vishnu, and the gods, having bowed to Lord Shiva, their own master, beyond all qualities, spoke there.

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.135.54)

yasmāttvattejasaḥsarve vayaṁ jātā mahātmanaḥ tvattejastatsamāyātu vedamantrābhiyogataḥ

'Since we all were born from your splendor, O great soul, may that splendor of yours now come into this body through the power of Vedic mantras.'

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.135.55)

ityevamabhimantreṇa mantritaṁ jalamuttamam smṛtvā śivaṁ sametāste cikṣipustatkalevare

With this invocation they consecrated excellent water with mantras, and, remembering Shiva, all together sprinkled it upon that body.

Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.135.56)

tajjalasparśamātreṇa cidyuto jīvito drutam tadottasthau supta iva sa bālaśca śivecchayā

By the mere touch of that water, endowed with consciousness, he was instantly brought to life; and that boy at once rose up as though from sleep, by Shiva's will.

Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.135.57)

subhagaḥ sundarataro gajavaktraḥ suraktakaḥ prasannavadanaścāti suprabho lalitākṛtiḥ

Handsome, exceedingly beautiful, elephant-faced, of ruddy hue, with a serene countenance, of great splendor, and graceful of form.

Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.135.58)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā jīvitaṁ bālaṁ śivāputraṁ munīśvara sarve mumudire tatra sarvaṁ duḥkhaṁ kṣayaṁ gatam

O lord of sages, seeing that boy, the son of Shiva, alive, all rejoiced there, and all sorrow came to an end.

Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.135.59)

devyai sandarśayāmāsuḥ sarve harṣasamanvitāḥ jīvitaṁ tanayaṁ dṛṣṭvā devī hṛṣṭatarābhavat

All of them, filled with joy, showed him to the Goddess; and seeing her son alive, the Goddess became exceedingly delighted.
