Rudra Samhita · Chapter 138
The Marriage of Ganesha
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.138.1)
brahmovāca etasminnantare tatra viśvarūpaḥ prajāpatiḥ tadudyogaṁ saṁvicārya sukhamāpa prasannadhīḥ
Brahma said: Meanwhile there, Vishvarupa Prajapati, having duly considered that undertaking, with a gladdened mind attained happiness.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.138.2)
viśvarūpaprajeśasya divyarūpe sute ubhe siddhibuddhiriti khyāte śubhe sarvāṅgaśobhane
Vishvarupa Prajapati had two daughters of divine form, known as Siddhi and Buddhi, auspicious, lovely in every limb.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.138.3)
tābhyāṁ caiva gaṇeśasya girijā śaṅkaraḥ prabhū mahotsavaṁ vivāhaṁ ca kārayāmāsaturmudā
Girija and Lord Shankara joyfully brought about a great festival and the marriage of Ganesha with those two.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.138.4)
santuṣṭā devatāḥ sarvāstadvivāhe samāgaman yathā caiva śivasyaiva girijāyā manorathaḥ
All the gods, well pleased, gathered at that marriage — even as Shiva's and Girija's own heart's desire was fulfilled.
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.138.5)
And Vishvakarma likewise performed the arrangements for the marriage; and the sages and gods too attained the greatest joy.
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.138.6)
gaṇeśo'pi tadā tābhyāṁ sukhaṁ paramadurlabham prāptavāṁśca mune tattu varṇituṁ naiva śakyate
Ganesha too then attained with those two a happiness supremely rare; and that, O sage, cannot be described.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.138.7)
kiyatā caiva kālena gaṇeśasya mahātmanaḥ dvayoḥ patnyośca dvau divyau tasya putrau babhūvatuḥ
After some span of time, two divine sons were born to the great-souled Ganesha, from his two wives.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.138.8)
siddhergaṇeśapatnyāstu kṣemanāmā suto'bhavat buddherlābhābhidhaḥ putro hyāsītparamaśobhanaḥ
From Siddhi, Ganesha's wife, was born a son named Kshema; from Buddhi was born a son named Labha, exceedingly beautiful.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.138.9)
evaṁ sukhamacintyaṁ vai bhuñjāne hi gaṇeśvare ājagāma dvitīyaśca krāntvā pṛthvīṁ sutastadā
Thus, while Ganeshvara was enjoying inconceivable happiness, the second son, having circled the earth, then arrived.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.138.10)
tāvaśca nāradenaiva prāpto gehe mahātmanā yathārthaṁ vacmi no'satyaṁ na chalena na matsarāt
He was met, O great soul, at his own home by Narada himself, who said: 'I speak the truth to you, not falsehood, neither out of deceit nor envy—'
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.138.11)
pitṛbhyāṁ tu kṛtaṁ yacca śivayā śaṅkareṇa te tanna kuryātparo loke satyaṁ satyaṁ bravīmyaham
'—what your parents, Shiva and Shankara, have done, no one else in the world would do; I speak the truth, the truth.'
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.138.12)
niṣkāsya tvāṁ kukramaṇaṁ miṣamutpādya yatnataḥ gaṇeśasya varo'kāri vivāhaḥ paraśobhanaḥ
'Having sent you off on a wrongful journey, deliberately contriving a pretext, they arranged an excellent marriage-boon for Ganesha.'
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.138.13)
gaṇeśasya kṛtodvāho labdhavāṁstrīdvayaṁ mudā viśvarūpaprajeśasya kanyāratnaṁ mahottamam
'Ganesha's marriage has been performed; he has joyfully obtained two wives — the most excellent jewel-like daughters of Vishvarupa Prajapati.'
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.138.14)
putradvayaṁ lalābhāsau dvayoḥ patnyoḥ śubhāṅgayoḥ siddheḥ kṣemaṁ tathā buddherlābhaṁ sarvasukhapradam
'He has obtained two sons from his two lovely wives — Kshema from Siddhi, and Labha from Buddhi, both bestowers of every happiness.'
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.138.15)
patnyordvayorgaṇeśo'sau labdhvāputradvayaṁ śubham mātāpitrormatenaiva sukhaṁ bhuṅkte nirantaram
'That Ganesha, having obtained two auspicious sons by his two wives, enjoys happiness without cease, entirely by the design of his parents.'
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.138.16)
bhavatā pṛthivī krāntā sasamudrā sakānanā tacchalājñāvaśāttāta tasya jātaṁ phalaṁ tvidam
'By you, the earth was circled, with its oceans and forests, under the compulsion of that deceitful command — and this became its result.'
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.138.17)
pitṛbhyāṁ hi kṛtaṁ yattu chalaṁ tāta vicāryatām svasvāmibhyāṁ viśeṣeṇa hyanyaḥ kinna karoti vai
'Consider, O child, the deceit that was wrought by your own parents — especially by one's own masters; what indeed would another not do?'
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.138.18)
asamyakca kṛtaṁ tābhyāṁ tvatpitṛbhyāṁ hi karma ha vicāryatāṁ tvayā'pīha maccitte na śubhaṁ matam
'Truly this deed done by your own parents was not right; consider it yourself as well — in my mind, I do not deem it good.'
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.138.19)
dadyādyadi garaṁ mātā vikrīṇīyātpitā yadi rājā harati sarvasvaṁ kasmai kiṁ ca bravītu vai
'If a mother should give poison, if a father should sell his child, if a king should seize all one's possessions — to whom should one even complain?'
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.138.20)
yenaivedaṁ kṛtaṁ syādvai karmānarthakaraṁ param śāntikāmassudhīstāta tanmukhaṁ na vilokayet
'Whoever has done such a supremely harmful deed — a wise man desiring peace, O child, should not even look upon his face.'
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.138.21)
iti nītiḥ śrutau proktā smṛtau śāstreṣu sarvataḥ niveditā ca sā te'dya yathecchasi tathā kuru
'Such is the moral principle declared in the Shruti, the Smriti, and in the scriptures everywhere; I have now told it to you — do as you wish.'
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.138.22)
brahmovāca ityuktvā nārada tvaṁ tu maheśvaramanogatiḥ tasmai tathā kumārāya vākyaṁ maunamupāgataḥ
Brahma said: Having spoken thus, you, O Narada, swift as the mind of the Great Lord, having said this word to Kumara, then fell silent.
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.138.23)
skando'pi pitaraṁ natvā kopāgnijvalitastadā jagāma parvataṁ krauñcaṁ pitṛbhyāṁ vārito'pi san
Skanda too, having bowed to his father, then blazing with the fire of anger, went to Mount Krauncha, even though restrained by his parents.
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.138.24)
vāraṇe ca kṛte tvadya gamyate ca kathaṁ tvayā ityevaṁ ca niṣiddho'pi procya neti jagāma saḥ
'Even though you have been forbidden today, how can you go?' — though thus forbidden, he, saying 'no,' departed nonetheless.
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.138.25)
na sthātavyaṁ mayā tātau kṣaṇamapyatra kiñcana yadyevaṁ kapaṭaṁ prītimapahāya kṛtaṁ mayi
'I shall not remain here even for a moment, O parents, since such deceit has been wrought upon me, love having been set aside.'
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.138.26)
evamuktvā gatastatra mune so'dyāpi vartate darśanenaiva sarveṣāṁ lokānāṁ pāpahārakaḥ
Having said this, he went there, O sage, and he remains there even to this day — by the mere sight of him removing the sins of all the worlds.
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.138.27)
taddinaṁ hi samārabhya kārtikeyasya tasya vai śivaputrasya devarṣe kumāratvaṁ pratiṣṭhitam
O divine sage, from that day onward, the state of eternal youth was established for that Kartikeya, the son of Shiva.
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.138.28)
tannāma śubhadaṁ loke prasiddhaṁ bhuvanatraye sarvapāpaharaṁ puṇyaṁ brahmacaryapradaṁ param
His name, bestowing auspiciousness, is renowned in the three worlds, removing all sin, holy, and supremely conducive to the vow of celibacy.
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.138.29)
kārtikyāṁ ca sadā devā ṛṣayaśca satīrthakāḥ darśanārthaṁ kumārasya gacchanti ca munīśvarāḥ
On the full moon of Kartika, the gods, the sages, and pilgrims, and the lords of sages, ever go for the sight of Kumara.
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.138.30)
kārtikyāṁ kṛttikāsaṅge kuryādyaḥ svāmidarśanam tasya pāpaṁ dahetsarvaṁ cittepsitaphalaṁ labhet
Whoever obtains the sight of the Lord on the Kartika full moon in conjunction with the Krittika asterism, all his sin is burnt away, and he obtains his heart's desired fruit.
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.138.31)
umā'pi duḥkhamāpannā skandasya virahe sati uvāca svāminaṁ dīnā tatra gaccha mayā prabho
Uma too, overcome with sorrow at Skanda's separation, spoke to her Lord, humbled: 'Go there, O Lord, together with me.'
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.138.32)
tatsukhārthaṁ svayaṁ śambhurgataḥ svāṁśena parvate mallikārjunanāmāsījjyotirliṅgaṁ sukhāvaham
For his happiness, Shambhu himself went by his own portion to that mountain; there arose the Jyotirlinga named Mallikarjuna, bestower of happiness.
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.138.33)
adyāpi dṛśyate tatra śivayā sahitaśśivaḥ sarveṣāṁ nijabhaktānāṁ kāmapūraḥ satāṁ gatiḥ
Even to this day Shiva is seen there together with Shiva, fulfilling the desires of all his own devotees, the refuge of the virtuous.
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.138.34)
Kumara, knowing that Shiva had come there together with Shiva, grew detached and became eager to go elsewhere.
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.138.35)
devaiśca munibhiścaiva prārthitaḥ so'pi dūrataḥ yojanatrayamutsṛjya sthitaḥ sthāne ca kārtikaḥ
Entreated by the gods and sages, he too, leaving a distance of three yojanas, remained settled in that very place, Kartika.
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.138.36)
putrasnehāturau tau vai śivau parvaṇi parvaṇi darśanārthaṁ kumārasya tasya nārada gacchataḥ
O Narada, that divine couple, afflicted with love for their son, go on every parva for the sight of that Kumara.
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.138.37)
amāvāsyādine śambhuḥ svayaṁ gacchati tatra ha pūrṇamāsīdine tatra pārvatī gacchati dhruvam
On the day of the new moon, Shambhu himself goes there; on the day of the full moon, Parvati assuredly goes there.
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.138.38)
yadyattasya ca vṛttāntaṁ bhavatpṛṣṭaṁ munīśvara kārtikasya gaṇeśasya paramaṁ kathitaṁ mayā
O lord of sages, whatever of his account you asked of me — of Kartikeya and of Ganesha — that supreme matter has been told by me.
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.138.39)
etacchrutvā naro dhīmān sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate śobhanāṁ labhate kāmānīpsitānsakalānsadā
Hearing this, a wise man is freed from all sins, and ever obtains excellent, desired objects, all of them.
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.138.40)
yaḥ paṭhetpāṭhayedvāpi śṛṇuyācchrāvayettathā sarvānkāmānavāpnoti nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
Whoever reads it, or causes it to be read, or hears it, or causes it to be heard, obtains all desires — of this there is no doubt to be entertained.
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.138.41)
brāhmaṇo brahmavarcasvī kṣatriyo vijayī bhavet vaiśyo dhanasamṛddhassyācchūdrassattamatāmiyāt
A brahmin becomes radiant with Vedic splendor, a kshatriya becomes victorious, a vaishya becomes prosperous in wealth, and a shudra attains excellence.
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.138.42)
rogī rogātpramucyeta bhayānmucyeta bhītiyuk bhūtapretādibādhābhyaḥ pīḍito na bhavennaraḥ
The sick is freed from disease, the fearful is freed from fear; a man shall not be afflicted by the torments of bhutas, pretas, and the like.
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.138.43)
etadākhyānamanaghaṁ yaśasyaṁ sukhavarddhanam āyuṣyaṁ svargyamatulaṁ putrapautrādikārakam
This narrative is sinless, glory-bestowing, increasing happiness, life-giving, heaven-bestowing, incomparable, and the cause of sons and grandsons.
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.138.44)
apavargapradaṁ cāpi śivajñānapradaṁ param śivāśivaprītikaraṁ śivabhaktivivarddhanam
It bestows liberation, and supremely bestows knowledge of Shiva; it delights Shiva and Shiva, and increases devotion to Shiva.
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.138.45)
śravaṇīyaṁ sadā bhaktairniṣkāmaiśca mumukṣubhiḥ śivādvaitapradaṁ caitatsadāśivamayaṁ śivam
It should ever be heard by devotees, by the desireless, and by those seeking liberation; it bestows non-dual union with Shiva, being itself the auspicious embodiment of Sadashiva.
