Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.137.1)
nārada uvāca gaṇeśasya śrutā tāta samyagjaniranuttamā caritramapi divyaṁ vai suparākramabhūṣitam
Narada said: O father, I have duly heard of Ganesha's most excellent birth, and also his divine deeds adorned with great valor.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.137.2)
tataḥ kimabhavattāta tattvaṁ vada sureśvara śivāśivayaśassphītaṁ mahānandapradāyakam
What happened thereafter, O father? Tell me the truth of it, O lord of gods — the abundant glory of Shiva and Shiva, bestower of great joy.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.137.3)
brahmovāca sādhu pṛṣṭaṁ muniśreṣṭha bhavatā karuṇātmanā śrūyatāṁ dattakarṇaṁ hi vakṣye'haṁ ṛṣisattama
Brahma said: Well have you asked, O best of sages, being compassionate of soul; listen with attentive ear, for I shall tell it, O foremost of sages.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.137.4)
śivā śivaśca viprendra dvayośca sutayoḥ param darśaṁ darśaṁ ca tallīlāṁ mahatprema samāvahat
O lord of brahmins, Shiva and Shiva, beholding again and again the play of their two sons, were filled with great love.
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.137.5)
pitrorlālayatostatra sukhaṁ cāti vyavarddhata sadā prītyā mudā cātikhelanaṁ cakratuḥ sutau
As the parents fondly cherished them there, their happiness grew ever greater; and the two sons, with constant love and joy, played together most delightedly.
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.137.6)
tāveva tanayau tatra mātāpitrormunīśvara mahābhaktyā yadā yuktau paricaryāṁ pracakratuḥ
O lord of sages, those same two sons, when devoted with great reverence to their mother and father, performed service to them.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.137.7)
ṣaṇmukhe ca gaṇeśe ca pitrostadadhikaṁ sadā sneho vyavarddhata mahān śuklapakṣe yathā śaśī
And the parents' great affection for both Shanmukha and Ganesha grew ever more, like the moon waxing in the bright fortnight.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.137.8)
kadācittau sthitau tatra rahasi premasaṁyutau śivā śivaśca devarṣe suvicāraparāyaṇau
O divine sage, once, Shiva and Shiva, seated together in private, full of love, intent on careful deliberation—
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.137.9)
śivāśivāvūcatuḥ vivāhayogyau sañjātau sutāviti ca tāvubhau vivāhaśca kathaṁ kāryaḥ putrayorubhayoḥ śubham
Shiva and Shiva said: 'Our two sons have now become fit for marriage — how then should the auspicious marriage of both be brought about?'
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.137.10)
ṣaṇmukhaśca priyatamo gaṇeśaśca tathaiva ca iti cintāsamudvignau līlānandau babhūvatuḥ
'Both Shanmukha, most beloved, and Ganesha likewise are dear to us' — thus, agitated with this concern, the two who delight in divine play fell to thinking.
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.137.11)
svapitrormatamājñāya tau sutāvapi saṁspṛhau tadicchayā vivāhārthaṁ babhūvaturatho mune
O sage, learning the intention of their own parents, the two sons, both eager, then became desirous of marriage in accordance with that wish.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.137.12)
ahaṁ ca pariṇeṣyāmi hyahaṁ caiva punaḥ punaḥ parasparaṁ ca nityaṁ vai vivāde tatparāvubhau
'I shall marry first!' 'No, I shall!' — again and again, the two of them were ever intent on this dispute with one another.
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.137.13)
śrutvā tadvacanaṁ tau ca dampatī jagatāṁ prabhū laukikācāramāśritya vismayaṁ paramaṁ gatau
Hearing those words, that divine couple, lords of the universe, resorting to worldly custom, fell into the greatest astonishment.
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.137.14)
kiṁ kartavyaṁ kathaṁ kāryo vivāhavidhiretayoḥ iti niścitya tābhyāṁ vai yuktiśca racitādbhutā
'What is to be done? How should the marriage-rite of these two be arranged?' — resolving thus, a wondrous plan was devised by them.
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.137.15)
kadācitsamaye sthitvā samāhūya svaputrakau kathayāmāsatustatra putrayoḥ pitarau tadā
Once, being seated at a suitable time, having summoned their own two sons, the parents then spoke to their two sons there.
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.137.16)
asmākaṁ niyamaḥ pūrvaṁ kṛtaśca sukhado hi vām śrūyatāṁ susutau prītyā kathayāvo yathārthakam
'We have made a rule beforehand that shall bring happiness to you both; listen, O good sons — with love we shall tell you truly.'
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.137.17)
samau dvāvapi satputrau viśeṣo nātra labhyate tasmātpaṇaḥ kṛtaḥ śandaḥ putrayorubhayorapi
'Both of you good sons are equal; no distinction can be found here. Therefore an auspicious wager has been set for you both.'
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.137.18)
yaścaiva pṛthivīṁ sarvāṁ krāntvā pūrvamupāvrajet tasyaiva prathamaṁ kāryo vivāhaḥ śubhalakṣaṇaḥ
'Whichever of you, having circled the entire earth, returns first — his auspicious marriage shall be performed first.'
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.137.19)
brahmovāca tayorevaṁ vacaḥ śrutvā śarajanmā mahābalaḥ jagāma mandirāttūrṇaṁ pṛthivīkramaṇāya vai
Brahma said: Hearing these words, the mighty one born of the reed-thicket went swiftly from the palace to circle the earth.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.137.20)
gaṇanāthaśca tatraiva saṁsthito buddhisattamaḥ subuddhyā saṁvicāryeti citta eva punaḥ punaḥ
But the Lord of the Ganas, of most excellent intellect, remained right there, reflecting again and again in his mind with sound judgment thus:
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.137.21)
kiṁ kartavyaṁ kva gantavyaṁ laṅghituṁ naiva śakyate krośamātraṁ gataḥ syādvai gamyate na mayā punaḥ
'What is to be done? Where must I go? This cannot be traversed — even going a mere krosha, I could not go on further.'
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.137.22)
kiṁ punaḥ pṛthivīmetāṁ krāntvā copārjitaṁ sukham vicāryeti gaṇeśastu yaccakāra śṛṇuṣva tat
'And what happiness, indeed, would be gained by circling this earth?' — reflecting thus, Ganesha did something; hear what he did.
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.137.23)
snānaṁ kṛtvā yathānyāyaṁ samāgatya svayaṁ gṛham uvāca pitaraṁ tatra mātaraṁ punareva saḥ
Having duly bathed, he himself came to the house, and there spoke again to his father and mother.
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.137.24)

gaṇeśa uvāca āsane sthāpite hyatra pūjārthaṁ bhavatoriha bhavantau saṁsthitau tātau pūryyatāṁ me manorathaḥ
Ganesha said: 'A seat having been set here for your worship, do you both, O parents, be seated upon it — let my heart's desire be fulfilled.'
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.137.25)
brahmovāca iti śrutvā vacastasya pārvatīparameśvarau asthātāmāsane tatra tatpūjāgrahaṇāya vai
Brahma said: Hearing his words, Parvati and Parameshvara then seated themselves there upon that seat, so as to receive his worship.

baddhāñjalirathovāca gaṇeśo buddhisāgaraḥ stutvā bahutithastāta pitarau premavihvalau
Then Ganesha, that ocean of wisdom, with joined palms, having praised his parents, overwhelmed with love, many times, O father, spoke.
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.137.28)
