The Gods' Hymn of Supplication
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.140.1)
व्यास उवाच । ब्रह्मपुत्र महाप्राज्ञ वद मे वदतां वर । ततः किमभवद्देवाः कथं च सुखिनोऽभवन्
vyāsa uvāca brahmaputra mahāprājña vada me vadatāṁ vara tataḥ kimabhavaddevāḥ kathaṁ ca sukhino'bhavan
Vyasa said: "O son of Brahma, greatly wise one, best of speakers, tell me — what happened then to the gods, and how did they become happy?"
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.140.2)
ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य व्यासस्यामितधीमतः । सनत्कुमारः प्रोवाच स्मृत्वा शिवपदाम्बुजम्
brahmovāca ityākarṇya vacastasya vyāsasyāmitadhīmataḥ sanatkumāraḥ provāca smṛtvā śivapadāmbujam
Brahma said: Hearing these words of Vyasa of boundless wisdom, Sanatkumara, remembering the lotus feet of Shiva, spoke.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.140.3)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । अथ तत्प्रभया दग्धा देवा हीन्द्रादयस्तथा । सम्मन्त्र्य दुःखिताः सर्वे ब्रह्माणं शरणं ययुः
sanatkumāra uvāca atha tatprabhayā dagdhā devā hīndrādayastathā sammantrya duḥkhitāḥ sarve brahmāṇaṁ śaraṇaṁ yayuḥ
Sanatkumara said: Then, scorched by that radiance, the gods headed by Indra, having taken counsel together in distress, all went for refuge to Brahma.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.140.4)
नत्वा पितामहं प्रीत्या परिक्षिप्याखिलाः सुराः । दुःखं विज्ञापयामासुर्विलोक्यावसरं ततः
natvā pitāmahaṁ prītyā parikṣipyākhilāḥ surāḥ duḥkhaṁ vijñāpayāmāsurvilokyāvasaraṁ tataḥ
Bowing to the grandsire with affection, all the gods surrounded him, and, watching for the right moment, made known their distress.
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.140.5)
देवा ऊचुः । धातस्त्रिपुरनाथेन सतारकसुतेन हि । सर्वे प्रतापिता नूनं मयेन त्रिदिवौकसः
devā ūcuḥ dhātastripuranāthena satārakasutena hi sarve pratāpitā nūnaṁ mayena tridivaukasaḥ
The gods said: "O Creator, by the lords of Tripura, the sons of Taraka, together with Maya, all of us dwellers of heaven have surely been scorched."
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.140.6)
अतस्ते शरणं याता दुःखिता हि विधे वयम् । कुरु त्वं तद्वधोपायं सुखिनः स्याम तद्यथा
ataste śaraṇaṁ yātā duḥkhitā hi vidhe vayam kuru tvaṁ tadvadhopāyaṁ sukhinaḥ syāma tadyathā
"Therefore, O Vidhi, we, being distressed, have come to you for refuge. Devise some means for their destruction, so that we may become happy."
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.140.7)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । इति विज्ञापितो देवैर्विहस्य भवकृद्विधिः । प्रत्युवाचाथ तान्सर्वान्मयतो भीतमानसान्
sanatkumāra uvāca iti vijñāpito devairvihasya bhavakṛdvidhiḥ pratyuvācātha tānsarvānmayato bhītamānasān
Sanatkumara said: Thus informed by the gods, Brahma, the maker of existence, smiling, replied to all of them, whose minds were afraid of Maya.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.140.8)
ब्रह्मोवाच । न भेतव्यं सुरास्तेभ्यो दानवेभ्यो विशेषतः । आचक्षे तद्वधोपायं शिवं शर्वः करिष्यति
brahmovāca na bhetavyaṁ surāstebhyo dānavebhyo viśeṣataḥ ācakṣe tadvadhopāyaṁ śivaṁ śarvaḥ kariṣyati
Brahma said: "You need not fear those danavas at all, O gods. I shall tell you the means of their destruction: Sharva himself will accomplish it."
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.140.9)
मत्तो विवर्धितो दैत्यो वधं मत्तो न चार्हति । तथापि पुण्यं वर्द्धेत नगरे त्रिपुरे पुनः
matto vivardhito daityo vadhaṁ matto na cārhati tathāpi puṇyaṁ varddheta nagare tripure punaḥ
"That daitya was made to flourish by my own boon, and hence does not deserve to be slain by me; nevertheless merit will go on increasing again in the city of Tripura."
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.140.10)
शिवं च प्रार्थयध्वं वै सर्वे देवाः सवासवाः । सर्वाधीशः प्रसन्नश्चेत्स वः कार्यं करिष्यति
śivaṁ ca prārthayadhvaṁ vai sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ sarvādhīśaḥ prasannaścetsa vaḥ kāryaṁ kariṣyati
"Therefore, all you gods together with Indra, pray to Shiva. If the lord of all is pleased, he will accomplish your task."
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.140.11)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य विधेर्वाणीं सर्वे देवाः सवासवाः । दुःखितास्ते ययुस्तत्र यत्रास्ते वृषभध्वजः
sanatkumāra uvāca ityākarṇya vidhervāṇīṁ sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ duḥkhitāste yayustatra yatrāste vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ
Sanatkumara said: Hearing these words of Vidhi, all the gods together with Indra, still distressed, went to the place where the bull-bannered one resided.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.140.12)
प्रणम्य भक्त्या देवेशं सर्वे प्राञ्जलयस्तदा । तुष्टुवुर्विनतस्कन्धाः शङ्करं लोकशङ्करम्
praṇamya bhaktyā deveśaṁ sarve prāñjalayastadā tuṣṭuvurvinataskandhāḥ śaṅkaraṁ lokaśaṅkaram
Bowing with devotion to the lord of gods, all of them, with joined palms and bowed shoulders, praised Shankara, the benefactor of the worlds.
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.140.13)
देवा ऊचुः । नमो हिरण्यगर्भाय सर्वसृष्टिविधायिने । नमः स्थितिकृते तुभ्यं विष्णवे प्रभविष्णवे
devā ūcuḥ namo hiraṇyagarbhāya sarvasṛṣṭividhāyine namaḥ sthitikṛte tubhyaṁ viṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave
The gods said: "Salutation to you as Hiranyagarbha, ordainer of all creation; salutation to you as Vishnu, all-pervading sustainer of existence."
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.140.14)
नमो हरस्वरूपाय भूतसंहारकारिणे । निर्गुणाय नमस्तुभ्यं शिवायामिततेजसे
namo harasvarūpāya bhūtasaṁhārakāriṇe nirguṇāya namastubhyaṁ śivāyāmitatejase
"Salutation to you in the form of Hara, destroyer of all beings; salutation to you, the attributeless, of boundless radiance."
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.140.15)
अवस्थारहितायाथ निर्विकाराय वर्चसे । महाभूतात्मभूताय निर्लिप्ताय महात्मने
avasthārahitāyātha nirvikārāya varcase mahābhūtātmabhūtāya nirliptāya mahātmane
"Salutation to you who are beyond all states, unchanging splendor, the very self of the great elements, untouched, the great soul."
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.140.16)
नमस्ते भूतपतये महाभारसहिष्णवे । तृष्णाहराय निर्वैराकृतये भूरितेजसे
namaste bhūtapataye mahābhārasahiṣṇave tṛṣṇāharāya nirvairākṛtaye bhūritejase
"Salutation to you, lord of all beings, bearer of the greatest burdens, remover of craving, free of enmity in form, of immense splendor."
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.140.17)
महादैत्यमहारण्यनाशिने दाववह्नये । दैत्यद्रुमकुठाराय नमस्ते शूलपाणये
mahādaityamahāraṇyanāśine dāvavahnaye daityadrumakuṭhārāya namaste śūlapāṇaye
"Salutation to you, the forest-fire that consumes the great forest of daityas, the axe upon the tree of the daityas, wielder of the trident."
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.140.18)
महादनुजनाशाय नमस्ते परमेश्वर । अम्बिकापतये तुभ्यं नमः सर्वास्त्रधारक
mahādanujanāśāya namaste parameśvara ambikāpataye tubhyaṁ namaḥ sarvāstradhāraka
"Salutation to you, destroyer of the great danavas, O supreme lord; salutation to you, husband of Ambika, bearer of every weapon."
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.140.19)
नमस्ते पार्वतीनाथ परमात्मन्महेश्वर । नीलकण्ठाय रुद्राय नमस्ते रुद्ररूपिणे
namaste pārvatīnātha paramātmanmaheśvara nīlakaṇṭhāya rudrāya namaste rudrarūpiṇe
"Salutation to you, lord of Parvati, supreme Self, great lord; salutation to the blue-throated Rudra, whose very form is Rudra."
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.140.20)
नमो वेदान्तवेद्याय मार्गातीताय ते नमः । नमो गुणस्वरूपाय गुणिने गुणवर्जिते
namo vedāntavedyāya mārgātītāya te namaḥ namo guṇasvarūpāya guṇine guṇavarjite
"Salutation to you, knowable through Vedanta, beyond every path; salutation to you whose form is the gunas, yet who possesses and transcends them."
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.140.21)
महादेव नमस्तुभ्यं त्रिलोकीनन्दनाय च । प्रद्युम्नायानिरुद्धाय वासुदेवाय ते नमः
mahādeva namastubhyaṁ trilokīnandanāya ca pradyumnāyāniruddhāya vāsudevāya te namaḥ
"O Mahadeva, salutation to you, delighter of the three worlds; salutation to you as Pradyumna, Aniruddha, and Vasudeva."
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.140.22)
सङ्कर्षणाय देवाय नमस्ते कंसनाशिने । चाणूरमर्दिने तुभ्यं दामोदर विषादिने
saṅkarṣaṇāya devāya namaste kaṁsanāśine cāṇūramardine tubhyaṁ dāmodara viṣādine
"Salutation to you as god Sankarshana, destroyer of Kamsa; salutation to you, crusher of Chanura, O Damodara, devourer of poison."
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.140.23)
हृषीकेशाच्युत विभो मृड शङ्कर ते नमः । अधोक्षज गजाराते कामारे विषभक्षण
hṛṣīkeśācyuta vibho mṛḍa śaṅkara te namaḥ adhokṣaja gajārāte kāmāre viṣabhakṣaṇa
"O Hrishikesha, Achyuta, all-pervading one, Mrida, Shankara, salutation to you; O Adhokshaja, foe of the elephant-demon, enemy of Kama, devourer of poison."
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.140.24)
नारायणाय देवाय नारायणपराय च । नारायणस्वरूपाय नाराणयतनूद्भव
nārāyaṇāya devāya nārāyaṇaparāya ca nārāyaṇasvarūpāya nārāṇayatanūdbhava
"Salutation to god Narayana, and to him supreme even beyond Narayana; to him whose form is Narayana, who arises as Narayana's very body."
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.140.25)
नमस्ते सर्वरूपाय महानरकहारिणे । पापापहारिणे तुभ्यं नमो वृषभवाहन
namaste sarvarūpāya mahānarakahāriṇe pāpāpahāriṇe tubhyaṁ namo vṛṣabhavāhana
"Salutation to you of every form, remover of great hells; salutation to you, remover of sin, rider of the bull."
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.140.26)
क्षणादिकालरूपाय स्वभक्तबलदायिने । नानारूपाय रूपाय दैत्यचक्रविमर्दिने
kṣaṇādikālarūpāya svabhaktabaladāyine nānārūpāya rūpāya daityacakravimardine
"Salutation to you whose form is time itself, giver of strength to your devotees, of manifold form, crusher of the host of daityas."
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.140.27)
नमो ब्रह्मण्यदेवाय गोब्राह्मणहिताय च । सहस्रमूर्त्तये तुभ्यं सहस्रावयवाय च
namo brahmaṇyadevāya gobrāhmaṇahitāya ca sahasramūrttaye tubhyaṁ sahasrāvayavāya ca
"Salutation to you, the god devoted to brahmins, benefactor of cows and brahmins; salutation to you of a thousand forms and a thousand limbs."
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.140.28)
धर्मरूपाय सत्त्वाय नमः सत्त्वात्मने हर । वेदवेद्यस्वरूपाय नमो वेदप्रियाय च
dharmarūpāya sattvāya namaḥ sattvātmane hara vedavedyasvarūpāya namo vedapriyāya ca
"Salutation to you whose form is dharma itself, whose being is truth, O Hara; salutation to you, knowable through the Vedas and dear to them."
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.140.29)
नमो वेदस्वरूपाय वेदवक्त्रे नमो नमः । सदाचाराध्वगम्याय सदाचाराध्वगामिने
namo vedasvarūpāya vedavaktre namo namaḥ sadācārādhvagamyāya sadācārādhvagāmine
"Salutation to you whose very form is the Veda, the speaker of the Vedas, salutation again and again; attained only by the path of righteous conduct."
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.140.30)
विष्टरश्रवसे तुभ्यं नमः सत्यमयाय च । सत्यप्रियाय सत्याय सत्यगम्याय ते नमः
viṣṭaraśravase tubhyaṁ namaḥ satyamayāya ca satyapriyāya satyāya satyagamyāya te namaḥ
"Salutation to you of vast fame, made of truth; salutation to you, lover of truth, the truth itself, attainable through truth."
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.140.31)
नमस्ते मायिने तुभ्यं मायाधीशाय वै नमः । ब्रह्मगाय नमस्तुभ्यं ब्रह्मणे ब्रह्मजाय च
namaste māyine tubhyaṁ māyādhīśāya vai namaḥ brahmagāya namastubhyaṁ brahmaṇe brahmajāya ca
"Salutation to you, the wielder of maya, lord of maya; salutation to you, who move within Brahman, who are Brahman itself, born of Brahman."
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.140.32)
तपसे ते नमस्त्वीश तपसा फलदायिने । स्तुत्याय स्तुतये नित्यं स्तुतिसम्प्रीतचेतसे
tapase te namastvīśa tapasā phaladāyine stutyāya stutaye nityaṁ stutisamprītacetase
"Salutation to you, O lord, who are austerity itself, giver of its fruit; worthy of praise, the very praise itself, ever gladdened by it."
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.140.33)
श्रुत्याचारप्रसन्नाय स्तुत्याचारप्रियाय च । चतुर्विधस्वरूपाय जलस्थलजरूपिणे
śrutyācāraprasannāya stutyācārapriyāya ca caturvidhasvarūpāya jalasthalajarūpiṇe
"Pleased by conduct in accord with scripture, delighting in conduct of praise; of fourfold form, appearing in forms born of water and land."
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.140.34)
सर्वे देवादयो नाथ श्रेष्ठत्वेन विभूतयः । देवानामिन्द्ररूपोऽसि ग्रहाणां त्वं रविर्मतः
sarve devādayo nātha śreṣṭhatvena vibhūtayaḥ devānāmindrarūpo'si grahāṇāṁ tvaṁ ravirmataḥ
"O Lord, all the gods and the rest are your manifest glories; among the gods you are held to be Indra, among the planets the sun."
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.140.35)
सत्यलोकोऽसि लोकानां सरितां द्युसरिद्भवान् । श्वेतवर्णोऽसि वर्णानां सरसां मानसं सरः
satyaloko'si lokānāṁ saritāṁ dyusaridbhavān śvetavarṇo'si varṇānāṁ sarasāṁ mānasaṁ saraḥ
"Among the worlds you are Satyaloka, among rivers the heavenly Ganga; among colors you are white, among lakes, Lake Manasa."
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.140.36)
शैलानां गिरिजातातः कामधुक्त्वं च गोषु ह । क्षीरोदधिस्तु सिन्धूनां धातूनां हाटको भवान्
śailānāṁ girijātātaḥ kāmadhuktvaṁ ca goṣu ha kṣīrodadhistu sindhūnāṁ dhātūnāṁ hāṭako bhavān
"Among mountains you are the father of Girija, among cows the wish-fulfilling cow; among oceans the Ocean of Milk, among metals gold."
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.140.37)
वर्णानां ब्राह्मणोऽसि त्वं नृणां राजासि शङ्कर । मुक्तिक्षेत्रेषु काशी त्वं तीर्थानां तीर्थराड् भवान्
varṇānāṁ brāhmaṇo'si tvaṁ nṛṇāṁ rājāsi śaṅkara muktikṣetreṣu kāśī tvaṁ tīrthānāṁ tīrtharāḍ bhavān
"Among the varnas you are the brahmin, among men, O Shankara, the king; among fields of liberation, Kashi; among fords, the king of fords."
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.140.38)
उपलेषु समस्तेषु स्फटिकस्त्वं महेश्वर । कमलस्त्वं प्रसूनेषु शैलेषु हिमवांस्तथा
upaleṣu samasteṣu sphaṭikastvaṁ maheśvara kamalastvaṁ prasūneṣu śaileṣu himavāṁstathā
"Among all stones, O great lord, you are crystal; among flowers, the lotus; among mountains, the Himalaya."
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.140.39)
भवान्वाग्व्यवहारेषु भार्गवस्त्वं कविष्वपि । पक्षिष्वेवासि शरभः सिंहो हिंस्रेषु सम्मतः
bhavānvāgvyavahāreṣu bhārgavastvaṁ kaviṣvapi pakṣiṣvevāsi śarabhaḥ siṁho hiṁsreṣu sammataḥ
"In matters of speech and among poets you are Bhargava; among birds you are Sharabha, among predators you are honored as the lion."
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.140.40)
शालग्रामशिला च त्वं शिलासु वृषभध्वज । पूज्यरूपेषु सर्वेषु नर्मदालिङ्गमेव हि
śālagrāmaśilā ca tvaṁ śilāsu vṛṣabhadhvaja pūjyarūpeṣu sarveṣu narmadāliṅgameva hi
"O bull-bannered one, among stones you are the Shaligrama; among all worshipable forms you are the linga of the Narmada."
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.140.41)
नन्दीश्वरोऽसि पशुषु वृषभः परमेश्वर । वेदेषूपनिषद्रूपी यज्वनां शीतभानुमान्
nandīśvaro'si paśuṣu vṛṣabhaḥ parameśvara vedeṣūpaniṣadrūpī yajvanāṁ śītabhānumān
"Among cattle, O supreme lord, you are the bull Nandi; among the Vedas the Upanishads, among sacrificers the cool moon."
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.140.42)
प्रतापिनां पावकस्त्वं शैवानामच्युतो भवान् । भारतं त्वं पुराणानां मकारोऽस्यक्षरेषु च
pratāpināṁ pāvakastvaṁ śaivānāmacyuto bhavān bhārataṁ tvaṁ purāṇānāṁ makāro'syakṣareṣu ca
"Among the mighty you are fire, among Shaivas, Achyuta; among the Puranas, the Mahabharata; among syllables, the letter 'ma'."
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.140.43)
प्रणवो बीजमन्त्राणां दारुणानां विषं भवान् । व्योमव्याप्तिमतां त्वं वै परमात्मासि चात्मनाम्
praṇavo bījamantrāṇāṁ dāruṇānāṁ viṣaṁ bhavān vyomavyāptimatāṁ tvaṁ vai paramātmāsi cātmanām
"Among seed-mantras you are the Pranava, among fierce things, poison; among the all-pervading, the sky; among selves, the supreme Self."
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.140.44)
इन्द्रियाणां मनश्च त्वं दानानामभयं भवान् । पावनानां जलं चासि जीवनानां तथामृतम्
indriyāṇāṁ manaśca tvaṁ dānānāmabhayaṁ bhavān pāvanānāṁ jalaṁ cāsi jīvanānāṁ tathāmṛtam
"Among the senses, the mind; among gifts, the gift of fearlessness; among purifiers, water; among life-sustaining things, nectar."
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.140.45)
लाभानां पुत्रलाभोऽसि वायुर्वेगवतामसि । नित्यकर्मसु सर्वेषु सन्ध्योपास्तिर्भवान्मतः
lābhānāṁ putralābho'si vāyurvegavatāmasi nityakarmasu sarveṣu sandhyopāstirbhavānmataḥ
"Among gains, the gain of a son; among swift things, the wind; among all daily rites, you are held to be the twilight worship."
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.140.46)
क्रतूनामश्वमेधोऽसि युगानां प्रथमो युगः । पुष्यस्त्वं सर्वधिष्ण्यानाममावास्या तिथिष्वसि
kratūnāmaśvamedho'si yugānāṁ prathamo yugaḥ puṣyastvaṁ sarvadhiṣṇyānāmamāvāsyā tithiṣvasi
"Among sacrifices, the Ashvamedha; among the ages, the first age; among lunar mansions, Pushya; among tithis, the new moon."
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.140.47)
सर्वर्तुषु वसन्तस्त्वं सर्वपर्वसु सङ्क्रमः । कुशोऽसि तृणजातीनां स्थूलवृक्षेषु वै वटः
sarvartuṣu vasantastvaṁ sarvaparvasu saṅkramaḥ kuśo'si tṛṇajātīnāṁ sthūlavṛkṣeṣu vai vaṭaḥ
"Among all seasons, spring; among all sacred occasions, the solstice; among grasses, kusha; among great trees, the banyan."
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.140.48)
योगेषु च व्यतीपातःसोमवल्ली लतासु च । बुद्धीनां धर्मबुद्धिस्त्वं कलत्रं सुहृदां भवान्
yogeṣu ca vyatīpātaḥsomavallī latāsu ca buddhīnāṁ dharmabuddhistvaṁ kalatraṁ suhṛdāṁ bhavān
"Among the astronomical yogas, Vyatipata; among creepers, the soma-vine; among faculties, the sense of dharma; among friends, one's wife."
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.140.49)
साधकानां शुचीनां त्वं प्राणायामो महेश्वर । ज्योतिर्लिङ्गेषु सर्वेषु भवान् विश्वेश्वरो मतः
sādhakānāṁ śucīnāṁ tvaṁ prāṇāyāmo maheśvara jyotirliṅgeṣu sarveṣu bhavān viśveśvaro mataḥ
"O great lord, among the practices of pure aspirants, the control of breath; among all the Jyotirlingas, you are held to be Vishveshvara."
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.140.50)
धर्मस्त्वं सर्वबन्धूनामाश्रमाणां परो भवान् । मोक्षस्त्वं सर्ववर्गेषु रुद्राणां नीललोहितः
dharmastvaṁ sarvabandhūnāmāśramāṇāṁ paro bhavān mokṣastvaṁ sarvavargeṣu rudrāṇāṁ nīlalohitaḥ
"Among all kinsmen, dharma; among the ashramas, the highest; among the goals of life, liberation; among the Rudras, Nilalohita."
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.140.51)
आदित्यानां वासुदेवो हनूमान्वानरेषु च । यज्ञानां जपयज्ञोऽसि रामः शस्त्रभृतां भवान्
ādityānāṁ vāsudevo hanūmānvānareṣu ca yajñānāṁ japayajño'si rāmaḥ śastrabhṛtāṁ bhavān
"Among the Adityas, Vasudeva; among monkeys, Hanuman; among sacrifices, the sacrifice of silent recitation; among wielders of weapons, Rama."

गन्धर्वाणां चित्ररथो वसूनां पावको ध्रुवम् । मासानामधिमासस्त्वं व्रतानां त्वं चतुर्दशी
gandharvāṇāṁ citraratho vasūnāṁ pāvako dhruvam māsānāmadhimāsastvaṁ vratānāṁ tvaṁ caturdaśī
"Among gandharvas, Chitraratha; among the Vasus, surely Pavaka; among months, the intercalary month; among vows, the fourteenth day."
Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.140.53)
ऐरावतो गजेन्द्राणां सिद्धानां कपिलो मतः । अनन्तस्त्वं हि नागानां पितॄणामर्यमा भवान्
airāvato gajendrāṇāṁ siddhānāṁ kapilo mataḥ anantastvaṁ hi nāgānāṁ pitṝṇāmaryamā bhavān
"Among lordly elephants, Airavata; among siddhas, Kapila; among serpents, Ananta; among the ancestors, Aryaman."
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.140.54)
कालः कलयतां च त्वं दैत्यानां बलिरेव च । किं बहूक्तेन देवेश सर्वं विष्टभ्य वै जगत्
kālaḥ kalayatāṁ ca tvaṁ daityānāṁ balireva ca kiṁ bahūktena deveśa sarvaṁ viṣṭabhya vai jagat
"Among those who reckon, Time itself; among daityas, Bali. What need of many words, O lord of gods — you alone sustain the whole universe."
Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.140.55)
एकांशेन स्थितस्त्वं हि बहिःस्थोऽन्वित एव च
ekāṁśena sthitastvaṁ hi bahiḥstho'nvita eva ca
"With a single portion of yourself you stand pervading all things, both remaining outside and yet present within."
Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.140.56)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । इति स्तुत्वा सुराः सर्वे महादेवं वृषध्वजम् । स्तोत्रैर्नानाविधैर्दिव्यैः शूलिनं परमेश्वरम्
sanatkumāra uvāca iti stutvā surāḥ sarve mahādevaṁ vṛṣadhvajam stotrairnānāvidhairdivyaiḥ śūlinaṁ parameśvaram
Sanatkumara said: Having thus praised Mahadeva, the bull-bannered, trident-bearing supreme lord, with many kinds of divine hymns, all the gods —
Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.140.57)
प्रत्यूचुः प्रस्तुतं दीनाः स्वार्थं स्वार्थविचक्षणाः । वासवाद्या नतस्कन्धाः कृताञ्जलिपुटा मुने
pratyūcuḥ prastutaṁ dīnāḥ svārthaṁ svārthavicakṣaṇāḥ vāsavādyā nataskandhāḥ kṛtāñjalipuṭā mune
— then, O sage, wretched yet skilled in pleading their own cause, Indra and the others, shoulders bowed and palms joined, spoke of their need.
Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.140.58)
देवा ऊचुः । पराजिता महादेव भ्रातृभ्यां सहितेन तु । भगवंस्तारकोत्पन्नैः सर्वे देवाः सवासवाः
devā ūcuḥ parājitā mahādeva bhrātṛbhyāṁ sahitena tu bhagavaṁstārakotpannaiḥ sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ
The gods said: "O Mahadeva, all of us gods together with Indra have been defeated by the sons of Taraka along with their brothers."
Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.140.59)
त्रैलोक्यं स्ववशं नीतं तथा च मुनिसत्तमाः । विध्वस्ताः सर्वसंसिद्धाः सर्वमुत्सादितं जगत्
trailokyaṁ svavaśaṁ nītaṁ tathā ca munisattamāḥ vidhvastāḥ sarvasaṁsiddhāḥ sarvamutsāditaṁ jagat
"The three worlds have been brought under their sway; all the accomplished ones have been destroyed, and the whole world laid waste."
Verse 60 (shiva.rudra.140.60)
यज्ञभागान्समग्राँस्तु स्वयं गृह्णाति दारुणः । प्रवर्तितो ह्यधर्मस्तैरृषीणां च निवारितः
yajñabhāgānsamagrā~stu svayaṁ gṛhṇāti dāruṇaḥ pravartito hyadharmastairṛṣīṇāṁ ca nivāritaḥ
"That fierce one himself now seizes the entire share of the sacrifices; he has spread unrighteousness and restrained the sages from their rites."
Verse 61 (shiva.rudra.140.61)
अवध्याः सर्वभूतानां नियतं तारकात्मजाः । तदिच्छया प्रकुर्वन्ति सर्वे कर्माणि शङ्कर
avadhyāḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ niyataṁ tārakātmajāḥ tadicchayā prakurvanti sarve karmāṇi śaṅkara
"O Shankara, the sons of Taraka are surely unslayable by any being; hence they act in all things exactly as they please."
Verse 62 (shiva.rudra.140.62)
यावन्न क्षीयते दैत्यैर्घोरैस्त्रिपुरवासिभिः । तावद्विधीयतां नीतिर्यया संरक्ष्यते जगत्
yāvanna kṣīyate daityairghoraistripuravāsibhiḥ tāvadvidhīyatāṁ nītiryayā saṁrakṣyate jagat
"So long as these terrible daityas of Tripura are not destroyed, let some policy be devised by which the world may be protected."
Verse 63 (shiva.rudra.140.63)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तेषामिन्द्रादीनां दिवौकसाम् । शिवः सम्भाषमाणानां प्रतिवाक्यमुवाच सः
sanatkumāra uvāca ityākarṇya vacasteṣāmindrādīnāṁ divaukasām śivaḥ sambhāṣamāṇānāṁ prativākyamuvāca saḥ
Sanatkumara said: Having heard these words of Indra and the other heaven-dwellers, Shiva then gave his reply, speaking with them.
