Rudra Samhita · Chapter 141
The Piety of Tripura's People
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.141.1)
śiva uvāca ayaṁ vai tripurādhyakṣaḥ puṇyavānvartate'dhunā yatra puṇyaṁ pravarteta na hantavyo budhaiḥ kvacit
Shiva said: "This lord of Tripura is at present truly virtuous; where virtue prevails, the wise should never slay."
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.141.2)
jānāmi devakaṣṭaṁ ca vibudhāḥ sakalaṁ mahat daityāste prabalā hantumaśakyāstu surāsuraiḥ
"I know your entire great distress, O gods; those daityas are so powerful that they cannot be slain by either gods or demons."
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.141.3)
puṇyavantastu te sarve samayāstārakātmajāḥ dussādhyastu vadhasteṣāṁ sarveṣāṁ puravāsinām
"All those sons of Taraka, bound by their vows, are meritorious; the slaying of all those city-dwellers is exceedingly difficult."
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.141.4)
mitradrohaṁ kathaṁ jānankaromi raṇakarkaśaḥ suhṛddrohe mahatpāpaṁ pūrvamuktaṁ svayambhuvā
"How, knowing it to be betrayal of a friend, could I, though fierce in battle, commit it? Betraying a well-wisher is a great sin, as Brahma himself declared of old."
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.141.5)
brahmaghne ca surāpe ca steye bhagnavrate tathā niṣkṛtirvihitā sadbhiḥ kṛtaghne nāsti niṣkṛtiḥ
"For the slayer of a brahmin, the drinker of liquor, the thief, and the breaker of vows, the wise have prescribed expiation; but for the ungrateful there is none."
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.141.6)
mama bhaktāstu te daityā mayā vadhyāḥ kathaṁ surāḥ vicāryatāṁ bhavadbhiśca dharmajñaireva dharmataḥ
"Those daityas are my devotees — how, O gods, could they be slain by me? You who know dharma should yourselves consider this rightly."
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.141.7)
tāvatte naiva hantavyā yāvadbhaktikṛtaśca me tathāpi viṣṇave devā nivedyaṁ kāraṇaṁ tvidam
"They are not to be slain by me so long as they continue devoted to me. Even so, O gods, this matter should also be laid before Vishnu."
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.141.8)
sanatkumāra uvāca ityevaṁ tadvacaḥ śrutvā devāḥ śakrapurogamāḥ nyavedayan drutaṁ sarve brahmaṇe prathamaṁ mune
Sanatkumara said: Having heard these words, the gods headed by Indra, O sage, swiftly reported it first to Brahma.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.141.9)
tato vidhiṁ puraskṛtya sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ vaikuṇṭhaṁ prayayuḥ śīghraṁ sarve śobhāsamanvitam
Then, placing Vidhi at their head, all the gods together with Indra swiftly went to resplendent Vaikuntha.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.141.10)
tatra gatvā hariṁ dṛṣṭvā praṇemurjātasambhramāḥ tuṣṭuvuśca mahābhaktyā kṛtāñjalipuṭāḥ surāḥ
Arriving there and beholding Hari, they bowed to him in eager haste, and with joined palms praised him with great devotion.
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.141.11)
svaduḥkhakāraṇaṁ sarvaṁ pūrvavattadanantaram nyavedayandrutaṁ tasmai viṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave
As before, they swiftly reported to the mighty, all-pervading Vishnu the entire cause of their sorrow.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.141.12)
devaduḥkhaṁ tataḥ śrutvā dattaṁ ca tripurālayaiḥ jñātvā vrataṁ ca teṣāṁ tadviṣṇurvacanamabravīt
Having heard the gods' distress and learned what the Tripura-dwellers had said, and understanding their vow, Vishnu spoke these words.
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.141.13)
viṣṇuruvāca idaṁ satyaṁ vacaścaiva yatra dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ tatra duḥkhaṁ na jāyeta sūrye dṛṣṭe yathā tamaḥ
Vishnu said: "This is indeed a true saying: where eternal dharma abides, no sorrow can arise — just as darkness cannot remain when the sun appears."
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.141.14)
sanatkumāra uvāca ityetadvacanaṁ śrutvā devā duḥkhamupāgatāḥ punarūcustathā viṣṇuṁ parimlānamukhāmbujāḥ
Sanatkumara said: Hearing these words, the gods, overcome with sorrow, their lotus-faces withered, spoke again to Vishnu.
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.141.15)
devā ūcuḥ kathaṁ caiva prakarttavyaṁ kathaṁ duḥkhaṁ nirasyate kathaṁ bhavema sukhinaḥ kathaṁ sthāsyāmahe vayam
The gods said: "What then should be done? How is our sorrow to be removed? How shall we become happy, and how shall we endure?"
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.141.16)
kathaṁ dharmā bhaviṣyanti tripure jīvite sati devaduḥkhapradā nūnaṁ sarve tripuravāsinaḥ
"How can our dharma flourish while Tripura still lives? Surely all the dwellers of Tripura are the very cause of the gods' suffering."
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.141.17)
kiṁ vā te tripurasyeha vadhaścaiva vidhīyatām no cedakālikī devasaṁhatiḥ kriyatāṁ dhruvam
"Either let the slaying of Tripura be ordained, or else let our own untimely destruction be surely brought about."
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.141.18)
sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktvā te tadā devā duḥkhaṁ kṛtvā punaḥ punaḥ sthitiṁ naiva gatiṁ te vai cakrurdevavarādiha
Sanatkumara said: Having said this, the gods, lamenting again and again, found neither rest nor any way forward, bound as they were by the boon.
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.141.19)
tānvai tathāvidhāndṛṣṭvā hīnānvinayasaṁyutān so'pi nārāyaṇaḥ śrīmāṁścintayaṁścetasā tathā
Seeing them thus, so wretched yet full of humility, glorious Narayana himself reflected within his mind.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.141.20)
kiṁ kāryaṁ devakāryeṣu mayā devasahāyinā śivabhaktāstu te daityāstārakasya sutā iti
"What indeed can I, the helper of the gods, do in this matter? For those daityas, sons of Taraka, are truly devotees of Shiva."
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.141.21)
iti sañcintya tatkāle viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā tato yajñāḥ smṛtāstena devakāryārthamakṣayāḥ
Reflecting thus, the all-powerful Vishnu then called to mind, for the sake of the gods' task, the imperishable Yajnas.
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.141.22)
tadviṣṇusmṛtimātreṇa yajñāste tatkṣaṇaṁ drutam āgatāstatra yatrāste śrīpatiḥ puruṣottamaḥ
By Vishnu's mere act of recollection, those Yajnas at once swiftly arrived where the Purushottama, lord of Shri, was present.
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.141.23)
tato viṣṇuṁ yajñapatiṁ purāṇaṁ puruṣaṁ harim praṇamya tuṣṭuvuste vai kṛtāñjalipuṭāstadā
Then, bowing to Vishnu, lord of sacrifice, the ancient Purusha, they praised him with joined palms.
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.141.24)
bhagavānapi tāndṛṣṭvā yajñānprāha sanātanān sanātanastadā sendrāndevānālokya cācyutaḥ
The Lord too, seeing those eternal Yajnas and looking upon the gods together with Indra, spoke to them.
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.141.25)
viṣṇuruvāca anenaiva sadā devā yajadhvaṁ parameśvaram puratrayavināśāya jagattrayavibhūtaye
Vishnu said: "By this very rite, O gods, ever worship the supreme Lord, for the destruction of the three cities and the glory of the three worlds."
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.141.26)
sanatkumāra uvāca acyutasya vacaḥ śrutvā devadevasya dhīmataḥ premṇā te praṇatiṁ kṛtvā yajñeśaṁ te'stuvansurāḥ
Sanatkumara said: Hearing the words of wise Achyuta, god of gods, the gods, bowing to him with love, praised the lord of sacrifice.
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.141.27)
evaṁ stutvā tato devā ayajanyajñapūruṣam yajñoktena vidhānena sampūrṇavidhayo mune
Having thus praised him, O sage, the gods then worshipped the Purusha of sacrifice, performing every rite according to the prescribed ordinance.
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.141.28)
tatastasmādyajñakuṇḍātsamutpetuḥ sahasraśaḥ bhūtasaṅghā mahākāyāḥ śūlaśaktigadāyudhāḥ
Then from that sacrificial pit there sprang up, by the thousands, hosts of huge Bhutas armed with tridents, spears, and maces.
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.141.29)
dadṛśuste surāstān vai bhūtasaṅghān sahasraśaḥ śūlaśaktigadāhastāndaṇḍacāpaśilāyudhān
The gods beheld those thousands of Bhutas — tridents, spears, and maces in hand, armed also with clubs, bows, and rocks.
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.141.30)
nānāpraharaṇopetān nānāveṣadharā~stathā kālāgnirudrasadṛśānkālasūryopamā~stadā
They were equipped with weapons of every kind, wearing every kind of garb, resembling Kalagni-Rudra, and like the sun at the time of dissolution.
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.141.31)
dṛṣṭvā tānabravīdviṣṇuḥ praṇipatya puraḥsthitān bhūtānyajñapatiḥ śrīmān rudrājñāpratipālakaḥ
Seeing them standing before him, glorious Vishnu, lord of sacrifice and upholder of Rudra's command, spoke to those Bhutas.
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.141.32)
viṣṇuruvāca bhūtāḥ śṛṇuta madvākyaṁ devakāryārthamudyatāḥ gacchantu tripuraṁ sadyaḥ sarve hi balavattarāḥ
Vishnu said: "O Bhutas, hear my words, you who stand ready for the task of the gods. Let all of you, most mighty ones, go at once to Tripura."
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.141.33)
gatvā dagdhvā ca bhittvā ca bhaṅktvā daityapuratrayam punaryathāgatā bhūtāgantumarhatha bhūtaye
"Having gone, burnt, breached, and broken the three cities of the daityas, return again, O Bhutas, just as you came."
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.141.34)
sanatkumāra uvāca tacchrutvā bhagavadvākyaṁ tato bhūtagaṇāśca te praṇamya devadevaṁ taṁ yayurdaityapuratrayam
Sanatkumara said: Hearing the Lord's command, those hosts of Bhutas, bowing to that god of gods, went to the three cities of the daityas.
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.141.35)
gatvā tatpraviśantaśca tripurādhipatejasi bhasmasādabhavansadyaḥ śalabhā iva pāvake
But going there, as soon as they entered into the radiant power of the lord of Tripura, they were instantly reduced to ashes, like moths in a flame.
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.141.36)
avaśiṣṭāśca ye kecitpalāyanaparāyaṇāḥ nissṛtyāraṁ samāyātā harernikaṭamākulāḥ
Whatever few remained, intent only on flight, fled forth and came back in distress to the presence of Hari.
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.141.37)
tāndṛṣṭvā sa hariḥ śrutvā tacca vṛttamaśeṣataḥ cintayāmāsa bhagavānmanasā puruṣottamaḥ
Seeing them, and hearing the entire account of what had happened, the Lord Purushottama pondered within his mind.
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.141.38)
kiṁ kṛtyamadhunā kāryamiti santaptamānasaḥ santaptānamarānsarvānājñāya ca savāsavān
"What now is to be done?" — with a troubled mind, and knowing that all the gods, together with Indra, were themselves in torment,
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.141.39)
kathaṁ teṣāṁ ca daityānāṁ balāddhatvā puratrayam devakāryaṁ kariṣyāmītyāsīccintāsamākulaḥ
"how, without forcibly destroying the three cities of those daityas, shall I accomplish the task of the gods?" — thus he was overwhelmed with anxious thought.
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.141.40)
nāśo'bhicārato nāsti dharmiṣṭhānāṁ na saṁśayaḥ iti prāha svayaṁ ceśaḥ śrutyācārapramāṇakṛt
"There is, without doubt, no destruction by hostile rites for those established in dharma" — thus the Lord himself, upholder of scriptural conduct, declared.
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.141.41)
daityāśca te hi dharmiṣṭhāḥsarve tripuravāsinaḥ tasmādavadhyatāṁ prāptā nānyathāsurapuṅgavāḥ
"Those daityas, all the dwellers of Tripura, are indeed righteous; therefore those foremost of asuras have attained inviolability, and by no other means."
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.141.42)
kṛtvā tu sumahatpāpaṁ rudramabhyarcayanti te mucyante pātakaiḥ sarvaiḥ padmapatramivāmbhasā
"Even after committing the gravest sin, when they worship Rudra they are freed from all sin, as a lotus leaf remains untouched by water."
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.141.43)
rudrābhyarcanato devāḥ sarve kāmā bhavanti hi nānopabhogasampattirvaśyatāṁ yāti vai bhuvi
"Through the worship of Rudra all desires are indeed fulfilled; manifold enjoyments and prosperity come under one's control on this earth."
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.141.44)
tasmāttadbhogino daityā liṅgārcanaparāyaṇāḥ anekavidhasampattermokṣasyāpi paratra ca
"Therefore those daityas, enjoying such fortune and devoted to the worship of the linga, partake of manifold prosperity here, and of liberation hereafter."
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.141.45)
tataḥ kṛtvā dharmavighnaṁ teṣāmevātmamāyayā daityānāṁ devakāryārthaṁ hariṣye tripuraṁ kṣaṇāt
"Therefore, having first created an obstacle to their very dharma through my own maya, I shall, for the sake of the gods' task, destroy Tripura in an instant."
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.141.46)
vicāryetthaṁ tatasteṣāṁ bhagavānpuruṣottamaḥ kartuṁ vyavasthitaḥ paścāddharmavighnaṁ surāriṇām
Having thus reflected, the Lord Purushottama then resolved to create an obstacle to the dharma of those enemies of the gods.
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.141.47)
yāvacca vedadharmāstu yāvadvai śaṅkarārcanam yāvacca śucikṛtyāni tāvannāśo bhavenna hi
"So long as the Vedic dharmas remain, so long as the worship of Shankara continues, and so long as pure observances are kept, no destruction can occur."
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.141.48)
tasmādevaṁ prakartavyaṁ vedadharmastato vrajet tyaktaliṅgārcanā daityā bhaviṣyanti na saṁśayaḥ
"Therefore it must be so contrived that the Vedic dharma departs from them; then, without doubt, those daityas will abandon the worship of the linga."
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.141.49)
iti niścitya vai viṣṇurvighnārthamakarottadā teṣāṁ dharmasya daityānāmupāyaṁ śrutikhaṇḍanam
Having thus resolved, Vishnu then devised, to obstruct the dharma of those daityas, a means — the undermining of their scriptural observance.
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.141.50)
tadaivovāca devānsa viṣṇurdevasahāyakṛt śivājñayā śivenaivājñaptastrailokyarakṣaṇe
Then Vishnu, the helper of the gods, commanded by Shiva's own order for the protection of the three worlds, spoke to the gods.
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.141.51)
viṣṇuruvāca he devāḥ sakalā yūyaṁ gacchata svagṛhāndhruvam devakāryaṁ kariṣyāmi yathāmati na saṁśayaḥ
Vishnu said: "O gods, all of you, go now surely to your own abodes; I shall accomplish the task of the gods according to my own judgment, without doubt."
Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.141.52)
tānrudrādvimukhānnūnaṁ kariṣyāmi suyatnataḥ svabhaktirahitān jñātvā tānkariṣyāmi bhasmasāt
"I shall surely, through careful effort, turn them away from Rudra; and once I know them devoid of devotion to him, I shall reduce them to ashes."
Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.141.53)
sanatkumāra uvāca tadājñāṁ śirasādhāyaśvāsitāste'marā mune svasvadhāmāni viśvastā yayuḥ paramamoditāḥ
Sanatkumara said: Bearing that command upon their heads, and thus reassured, O sage, the gods, trusting him, went to their own abodes, greatly delighted.
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.141.54)
tataścaivākarodviṣṇurdevārthaṁ hitamuttamam tadeva śrūyatāṁ samyaksarvapāpapraṇāśanam
Then Vishnu accomplished the highest good for the sake of the gods; hear now that very account, which fully destroys every sin.
