Thus this command was given by the mighty Vishnu; and by the ordinance of the god of gods, Hari then vanished, remaining within his heart.
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.142.24)

Then the shaven one, obeying Hari's command, created four disciples in his own likeness, and himself taught them that illusory scripture.
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.142.25)
yathā svayaṁ tathā te ca catvāro muṇḍinaḥ śubhāḥ namaskṛtya sthitāstatra haraye paramātmane

catvāro muṇḍinaste'tha dharmaṁ pāṣaṇḍamāśritāḥ haste pātraṁ dadhānāśca tuṇḍavastrasya dhārakāḥ
Those four shaven ones then, taking refuge in a heterodox doctrine, held a bowl in hand and wore a cloth over the mouth.
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.142.29)
malinānyeva vāsāṁsi dhārayanto hyabhāṣiṇaḥ dharmo lābhaḥ paraṁ tattvaṁ vadantastvatiharṣataḥ
Wearing only soiled garments, mostly silent, they proclaimed with great delight, "Dharma is the highest gain, the supreme truth."
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.142.30)
mārjanīṁ dhriyamāṇāśca vastrakhaṇḍavinirmitām śanaiḥ śanaiścalanto hi jīvahiṁsābhayāddhruvam
They carried a small broom made of strips of cloth, walking ever so slowly, surely for fear of harming living creatures.
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.142.31)
te sarve ca tadā devaṁ bhagavantaṁ mudānvitāḥ namaskṛtya punastatra mune tasthustadagrataḥ
All of them, filled with joy, having bowed again to the divine Lord, O sage, stood there before him.
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.142.32)
hariṇā ca tadā haste dhṛtvā ca gurave'rpitāḥ abhyadhāyi ca suprītyā tannāmāni viśeṣataḥ
Then Hari, taking them by the hand, entrusted them to their teacher, and with great affection specifically declared their names.
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.142.33)
yathā tvaṁ ca tathaivaite madīyā vai na saṁśayaḥ ādirūpaṁ ca tannāma pūjyatvātpūjya ucyate
"As you are, so indeed are these — mine, without doubt. Their first name, because of their worshipfulness, shall be called 'Pujya'."
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.142.34)
ṛṣiryatistathākīrya upādhyāya iti svayam imānyapi tu nāmāni prasiddhāni bhavantu vaḥ
"'Rishi', 'Yati', likewise 'Akirya', and 'Upadhyaya' — let these names too become well known among you."
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.142.35)
mamāpi ca bhavadbhiśca nāma grāhyaṁ śubhaṁ punaḥ arihanniti tannāma dhyeyaṁ pāpapraṇāśanam
"And by you my own auspicious name too should be uttered again — 'Arihan' — that name is to be meditated upon, the destroyer of sin."
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.142.36)

"You must perform deeds that bring happiness to the world; acting in accordance with the world, you shall attain the highest state."
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.142.37)
sanatkumāra uvāca tataḥ praṇamya taṁ māyī śiṣyayuktaḥsvayaṁ tadā jagāma tripuraṁ sadyaḥ śivecchākāriṇaṁ mumā
Sanatkumara said: Then, bowing to him, that master of illusion, together with his disciples, went at once to Tripura, to accomplish the will of Shiva.
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.142.38)
praviśya tatpuraṁ tūrṇaṁ viṣṇunā nodito vaśī mahāmāyāvinā tena ṛṣirmāyāṁ tadākarot
Entering that city swiftly, impelled by Vishnu, the self-controlled sage, that great illusion-maker, then worked his illusion.
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.142.39)
nagaropavane kṛtvā śiṣyairyuktaḥ sthitiṁ tadā māyāṁ pravartayāmāsa māyināmapi mohinīm
Taking up residence in a grove outside the city together with his disciples, he set in motion an illusion capable of deluding even the masters of illusion themselves.
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.142.40)
śivārcanaprabhāveṇa tanmāyā sahasā mune tripure na cacālāśu nirviṇṇo'bhūttadā yatiḥ
But by the power of their worship of Shiva, O sage, that illusion did not at once take hold in Tripura, and the ascetic then became despondent.
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.142.41)
atha viṣṇuṁ sa sasmāra tuṣṭāva ca hṛdā bahu naṣṭotsāho vicetasko hṛdayena vidūyatā
Then, his enthusiasm lost, his mind bewildered, his heart burning with anguish, he called Vishnu to mind and praised him greatly within his heart.
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.142.42)

Being thus remembered, Vishnu swiftly called Shankara to mind in his heart; and having received his sanction mentally, he swiftly called Narada to mind.
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.142.43)
smṛtamātreṇa viṣṇośca nāradaḥ samupasthitaḥ natvā stutvā purastasya sthito'bhūtsāñjalistadā
At the mere thought of Vishnu, Narada appeared at once; bowing and praising him, he stood before him with joined palms.
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.142.44)

Then Vishnu, best of the wise, ever intent on the world's welfare, ever the doer of the gods' work, spoke to Narada.
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.142.45)

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.142.46)
sanatkumāra uvāca ityākarṇya vacastasya nārado munisattamaḥ gatastatra drutaṁ yatra sa ṛṣirmāyināṁ varaḥ
Sanatkumara said: Hearing his words, Narada, best of sages, went swiftly to where that sage, foremost among illusion-makers, was.
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.142.47)
nārado'pi tathā māyī niyogānmāyinaḥ prabhoḥ praviśya tatpuraṁ tena māyinā saha dīkṣitaḥ
Narada too, thus becoming an illusion-worker by the command of the lord of illusion-makers, entering that city, was initiated together with that master of illusion.
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.142.48)

Then Narada, going into the presence of the lord of Tripura, and having exchanged courteous greetings, related everything to the king.
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.142.49)

nārada uvāca kaścitsamāgataścātra yatirdharmaparāyaṇaḥ sarvavidyāprakṛṣṭo hi vedavidyāparānvitaḥ
Narada said: "A certain ascetic, devoted to dharma, has come here — excelling in all learning and possessing knowledge beyond even the Vedic sciences."
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.142.50)
dṛṣṭvā ca bahavo dharmā naitena sadṛśāḥ punaḥ vayaṁ sudīkṣitāścātra dṛṣṭvā dharmaṁ sanātanam
"Though I have seen many dharmas, none is equal to this one; having seen this eternal dharma, I myself have been well initiated into it here."

sanatkumāra uvāca tadīyaṁ sa vacaḥ śrutvā mahadarthasugarbhitam vismito hṛdi daityeśo jagau tatra vimohitaḥ
Sanatkumara said: Hearing his words, pregnant with great meaning, the lord of the daityas, astonished at heart and now deluded, spoke there.

nārado dīkṣito yasmādvayaṁ dīkṣāmavāpnumaḥ ityevaṁ ca viditvā vai jagāma svayameva ha
"Since Narada himself has been initiated, let us too receive that initiation" — thinking thus, he himself went there in person.
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.142.54)
tadrūpaṁ ca tadā dṛṣṭvā mohito māyayā tathā uvāca vacanaṁ tasmai namaskṛtya mahātmane
Beholding his form, and thus deluded by that illusion, he bowed to that great soul and spoke to him these words.
Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.142.55)
