The Revival of Indra

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.151.1)

व्यास उवाच । भो ब्रह्मन्भगवन्पूर्वं श्रुतं मे ब्रह्मपुत्रक । जलन्धरं महादैत्यमवधीच्छङ्करः प्रभुः

vyāsa uvāca bho brahmanbhagavanpūrvaṁ śrutaṁ me brahmaputraka jalandharaṁ mahādaityamavadhīcchaṅkaraḥ prabhuḥ

Vyasa said: "O blessed Brahmin, O son of Brahma, I have heard before that Lord Shankara slew the great daitya Jalandhara."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.151.2)

तत्त्वं वद महाप्राज्ञ चरितं शशिमौलिनः । विस्तारपूर्वकं शृण्वन्कस्तृप्येत्तद्यशोऽमलम्

tattvaṁ vada mahāprājña caritaṁ śaśimaulinaḥ vistārapūrvakaṁ śṛṇvankastṛpyettadyaśo'malam

"Tell me that account of the moon-crested one, O greatly wise one, in full detail — who could ever be satisfied hearing that stainless glory?"

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.151.3)

सूत उवाच । इत्येवं व्याससम्पृष्टो ब्रह्मपुत्रो महामुनिः । उवाचार्थवदव्यग्रं वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः

sūta uvāca ityevaṁ vyāsasampṛṣṭo brahmaputro mahāmuniḥ uvācārthavadavyagraṁ vākyaṁ vākyaviśāradaḥ

Suta said: Thus questioned by Vyasa, the great sage, the son of Brahma, skilled in speech, spoke a measured and meaningful word.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.151.4)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । एकदा जीवशक्रौ च भक्त्या परमया मुने । दर्शनं कर्तुमीशस्य कैलासं जग्मतुर्भृशम्

sanatkumāra uvāca ekadā jīvaśakrau ca bhaktyā paramayā mune darśanaṁ kartumīśasya kailāsaṁ jagmaturbhṛśam

Sanatkumara said: "O sage, once Jiva [Brihaspati] and Shakra [Indra], with the utmost devotion, went eagerly to Kailasa to behold the Lord."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.151.5)

अथ गुर्विन्द्रयोर्ज्ञात्वाऽऽगमनं शङ्करः प्रभुः । परीक्षितुं तयोर्ज्ञानं स्वदर्शनरतात्मनोः

atha gurvindrayorjñātvā''gamanaṁ śaṅkaraḥ prabhuḥ parīkṣituṁ tayorjñānaṁ svadarśanaratātmanoḥ

Then Lord Shankara, learning of the approach of the guru [Brihaspati] and Indra, resolved to test the wisdom of those two, both intent on seeing him —

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.151.6)

दिगम्बरोऽथ तन्मार्गमारुद्ध्य सद्गतिः सताम् । जटाबद्धेन शिरसातिष्ठत्संशोभिताननः

digambaro'tha tanmārgamāruddhya sadgatiḥ satām jaṭābaddhena śirasātiṣṭhatsaṁśobhitānanaḥ

— he, sky-clad, the true refuge of the virtuous, blocked their path and stood there, his matted hair bound up, his face resplendent.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.151.7)

अथ तौ गुरुशक्रौ च कुर्वन्तौ गमनं मुदा । आलोक्य पुरुषं भीमं मार्गमध्येऽद्भुताकृतिम्

atha tau guruśakrau ca kurvantau gamanaṁ mudā ālokya puruṣaṁ bhīmaṁ mārgamadhye'dbhutākṛtim

Then, as the guru and Shakra journeyed on joyfully, they beheld in the middle of the road a formidable figure of wondrous form —

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.151.8)

महातेजस्विनं शान्तं जटासम्बद्धमस्तकम् । महाबाहुं महोरस्कं गौरं नयनभीषणम्

mahātejasvinaṁ śāntaṁ jaṭāsambaddhamastakam mahābāhuṁ mahoraskaṁ gauraṁ nayanabhīṣaṇam

— greatly radiant, tranquil, his head bound in matted hair, mighty of arm, broad of chest, fair of hue, with eyes that struck fear.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.151.9)

अथो पुरन्दरोऽपृच्छत्स्वाधिकारेण दुर्मदः । पुरुषं तं स्वमार्गान्तः स्थितमज्ञाय शङ्करम्

atho purandaro'pṛcchatsvādhikāreṇa durmadaḥ puruṣaṁ taṁ svamārgāntaḥ sthitamajñāya śaṅkaram

Then Purandara [Indra], intoxicated with pride in his own authority, failing to recognize that figure as Shankara, questioned the man standing there in his path.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.151.10)

पुरन्दर उवाच । कस्त्वं भोः कुत आयातः किं नाम वद तत्त्वतः । स्वस्थाने संस्थितः शम्भुः किं वान्यत्र गतः प्रभुः

purandara uvāca kastvaṁ bhoḥ kuta āyātaḥ kiṁ nāma vada tattvataḥ svasthāne saṁsthitaḥ śambhuḥ kiṁ vānyatra gataḥ prabhuḥ

Purandara said: "Who are you, sir? Whence have you come? Tell me truly your name. Is Lord Shambhu present in his own abode, or has the Lord gone elsewhere?"

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.151.11)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । शक्रेणेत्थं स पृष्टस्तु किञ्चिन्नोवाच तापसः । शक्रः पुनरपृच्छद्वै नोवाच स दिगम्बरः

sanatkumāra uvāca śakreṇetthaṁ sa pṛṣṭastu kiñcinnovāca tāpasaḥ śakraḥ punarapṛcchadvai novāca sa digambaraḥ

Sanatkumara said: "Thus questioned by Shakra, that ascetic said nothing at all. Shakra asked again, and still the sky-clad one gave no answer."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.151.12)

पुनः पुरन्दरोऽपृच्छल्लोकानामधिपेश्वरः । तूष्णीमास महायोगी लीलारूपधरः प्रभुः

punaḥ purandaro'pṛcchallokānāmadhipeśvaraḥ tūṣṇīmāsa mahāyogī līlārūpadharaḥ prabhuḥ

Again Purandara, lord of the rulers of the worlds, questioned him; but the great yogi, the Lord who had assumed this form in his own play, remained silent.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.151.13)

इत्थं पुनः पुनः पृष्टः शक्रेण स दिगम्बरः । नोवाच किञ्चिद्भगवान् शक्रज्ञानपरीक्षया

itthaṁ punaḥ punaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ śakreṇa sa digambaraḥ novāca kiñcidbhagavān śakrajñānaparīkṣayā

Thus questioned again and again by Shakra, that sky-clad Lord said nothing at all, testing Shakra's understanding.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.151.14)

अथ चुक्रोध देवेशस्त्रैलोक्यैश्वर्यगर्वितः । उवाच वचनं चैव तं निर्भर्त्स्य जटाधरम्

atha cukrodha deveśastrailokyaiśvaryagarvitaḥ uvāca vacanaṁ caiva taṁ nirbhartsya jaṭādharam

Then the lord of the gods, proud of his dominion over the three worlds, grew angry, and, rebuking that matted-haired figure, spoke these words.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.151.15)

इन्द्र उवाच । रे मया पृच्छ्यमानोऽपि नोत्तरं दत्तवानसि । अतस्त्वां हन्मि वज्रेण कस्ते त्रातास्ति दुर्मते

indra uvāca re mayā pṛcchyamāno'pi nottaraṁ dattavānasi atastvāṁ hanmi vajreṇa kaste trātāsti durmate

Indra said: "You there! Though I have questioned you, you have given me no answer. Therefore I shall strike you down with my thunderbolt — who is there to save you now, O evil-minded fool?"

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.151.16)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्युदीर्य ततो वज्री सन्निरीक्ष्य क्रुधा हि तम् । हन्तुं दिगम्बरं वज्रमुद्यतं स चकार ह

sanatkumāra uvāca ityudīrya tato vajrī sannirīkṣya krudhā hi tam hantuṁ digambaraṁ vajramudyataṁ sa cakāra ha

Sanatkumara said: "Having spoken thus, the wielder of the thunderbolt, glaring at him in fury, raised the thunderbolt to strike down that sky-clad one."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.151.17)

पुरन्दरं वज्रहस्तं दृष्ट्वा देवस्सदाशिवः । चकार स्तम्भनं तस्य वज्रपातस्य शङ्करः

purandaraṁ vajrahastaṁ dṛṣṭvā devassadāśivaḥ cakāra stambhanaṁ tasya vajrapātasya śaṅkaraḥ

Seeing Purandara with thunderbolt in hand, the god Sadashiva, Shankara, brought that falling thunderbolt to a sudden halt.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.151.18)

ततो रुद्रः क्रुधाविष्टः करालाक्षो भयङ्करः । द्रुतमेव प्रजज्वाल तेजसा प्रदहन्निव

tato rudraḥ krudhāviṣṭaḥ karālākṣo bhayaṅkaraḥ drutameva prajajvāla tejasā pradahanniva

Then Rudra, seized by wrath, his eyes terrible, fearsome to behold, blazed up at once, as though consuming all with his fiery power.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.151.19)

बाहुप्रतिष्टम्भभुवा मन्युनान्तः शचीपतिः । समदह्यत भोगीव मन्त्ररुद्धपराक्रमः

bāhupratiṣṭambhabhuvā manyunāntaḥ śacīpatiḥ samadahyata bhogīva mantraruddhaparākramaḥ

Shachi's lord, seized by the fury born of finding his own arm held motionless, burned within, like a serpent whose power is checked and bound by a mantra.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.151.20)

दृष्ट्वा बृहस्पतिस्तूर्णं प्रज्वलन्तं स्वतेजसा । पुरुषं तं धिया ज्ञात्वा प्रणनाम हरं प्रभुम्

dṛṣṭvā bṛhaspatistūrṇaṁ prajvalantaṁ svatejasā puruṣaṁ taṁ dhiyā jñātvā praṇanāma haraṁ prabhum

Seeing that figure suddenly ablaze with his own fiery power, Brihaspati, recognizing him by his own insight, bowed down to Lord Hara.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.151.21)

कृताञ्जलिपुटो भूत्वा ततो गुरुरुदारधीः । नत्वा च दण्डवद्भूमौ प्रभुं स्तोतुं प्रचक्रमे

kṛtāñjalipuṭo bhūtvā tato gururudāradhīḥ natvā ca daṇḍavadbhūmau prabhuṁ stotuṁ pracakrame

Then the guru, noble in mind, with hands folded in reverence, having prostrated flat upon the ground, began to offer praise to the Lord.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.151.22)

गुरुरुवाच । नमो देवाधिदेवाय महादेवाय चात्मने । महेश्वराय प्रभवे त्र्यम्बकाय कपर्दिने

gururuvāca namo devādhidevāya mahādevāya cātmane maheśvarāya prabhave tryambakāya kapardine

The guru said: "Salutation to the God of gods, Mahadeva, the very Self; to Maheshvara, the source of all, the three-eyed one, wearer of matted locks."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.151.23)

दीननाथाय विभवे नमोऽन्धकनिषूदिने । त्रिपुरघ्नाय शर्वाय ब्रह्मणे परमेष्ठिने

dīnanāthāya vibhave namo'ndhakaniṣūdine tripuraghnāya śarvāya brahmaṇe parameṣṭhine

"Salutation to the Lord of the humble, the mighty one, slayer of Andhaka; to the destroyer of Tripura, to Sharva, to Brahman, to him enthroned at the highest summit."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.151.24)

विरूपाक्षाय रुद्राय बहुरूपाय शम्भवे । विरूपायातिरूपाय रूपातीताय ते नमः

virūpākṣāya rudrāya bahurūpāya śambhave virūpāyātirūpāya rūpātītāya te namaḥ

"Salutation to you, Virupaksha, Rudra, of many forms, Shambhu; formless, of surpassing form, and beyond all form."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.151.25)

यज्ञविध्वंसकर्त्रे च यज्ञानां फलदायिने । नमस्ते मखरूपाय परकर्मप्रवर्तिने

yajñavidhvaṁsakartre ca yajñānāṁ phaladāyine namaste makharūpāya parakarmapravartine

"To the destroyer of sacrifices, and yet the bestower of their fruit; salutation to you, the very form of the sacrificial rite, who sets in motion the deeds of others."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.151.26)

कालान्तकाय कालाय कालभोगिधराय च । नमस्ते परमेशाय सर्वत्र व्यापिने नमः

kālāntakāya kālāya kālabhogidharāya ca namaste parameśāya sarvatra vyāpine namaḥ

"To the ender of time, to Time itself, to the bearer of Time's own serpent; salutation to you, supreme Lord, all-pervading everywhere."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.151.27)

नमो ब्रह्मशिरोहन्त्रे ब्रह्मचन्द्र स्तुताय च । ब्रह्मण्याय नमस्तेऽस्तु नमस्ते परमात्मने

namo brahmaśirohantre brahmacandra stutāya ca brahmaṇyāya namaste'stu namaste paramātmane

"Salutation to the severer of Brahma's head, praised by Brahma's own moon-bright glory; salutation to you, friend of the Brahmins; salutation to you, the Supreme Self."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.151.28)

त्वमग्निरनिलो व्योम त्वमेवापो वसुन्धरा । त्वं सूर्यश्चन्द्रमा भानि ज्योतिश्चक्रं त्वमेव हि

tvamagniranilo vyoma tvamevāpo vasundharā tvaṁ sūryaścandramā bhāni jyotiścakraṁ tvameva hi

"You are fire, wind, and sky; you alone are water and the earth. You are the sun, the moon, the stars; you alone are the whole wheel of light."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.151.29)

त्वमेव विष्णुस्त्वं ब्रह्मा तत्स्तुतस्त्वं परेश्वरः । मुनयः सनकाद्यास्त्वं नारदस्त्वं तपोधनः

tvameva viṣṇustvaṁ brahmā tatstutastvaṁ pareśvaraḥ munayaḥ sanakādyāstvaṁ nāradastvaṁ tapodhanaḥ

"You alone are Vishnu, you are Brahma, and you are the supreme Lord praised by him. You are the sages Sanaka and his brothers; you are Narada; you are the one whose treasure is austerity."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.151.30)

त्वमेव सर्वलोकेशस्त्वमेव जगदात्मकः । सर्वान्वयः सर्वभिन्नस्त्वमेव प्रकृतेः परः

tvameva sarvalokeśastvameva jagadātmakaḥ sarvānvayaḥ sarvabhinnastvameva prakṛteḥ paraḥ

"You alone are the Lord of all the worlds; you alone are the very soul of the universe. Present within all, yet distinct from all, you alone stand beyond Prakriti."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.151.31)

त्वं वै सृजसि लोकांश्च रजसा विधिनामभाक् । सत्त्वेन हरिरूपस्त्वं सकलं यासि वै जगत्

tvaṁ vai sṛjasi lokāṁśca rajasā vidhināmabhāk sattvena harirūpastvaṁ sakalaṁ yāsi vai jagat

"Through rajas, bearing the name of Vidhi [Brahma], you create the worlds; through sattva, in the form of Hari, you pervade this entire universe."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.151.32)

त्वमेवासि महादेव तमसा हररूपधृक् । लीलया भुवनं सर्वं निखिलं पाञ्चभौतिकम्

tvamevāsi mahādeva tamasā hararūpadhṛk līlayā bhuvanaṁ sarvaṁ nikhilaṁ pāñcabhautikam

"You alone, O Mahadeva, through tamas, take on the form of Hara. By your own play alone, this whole world, made wholly of the five elements, is sustained and dissolved."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.151.33)

त्वद्ध्यानबलतःसूर्यस्तपते विश्वभावन । अमृतं च्यवते लोके शशी वाति समीरणः

tvaddhyānabalataḥsūryastapate viśvabhāvana amṛtaṁ cyavate loke śaśī vāti samīraṇaḥ

"By the power of meditation upon you, O nurturer of the universe, the sun gives forth its heat, the moon sheds down its nectar upon the world, and the wind moves."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.151.34)

त्वद्ध्यानबलतो मेघाश्चाम्बु वर्षन्ति शङ्कर । त्वद्ध्यानबलतः शक्रस्त्रिलोकीं पाति पुत्रवत्

tvaddhyānabalato meghāścāmbu varṣanti śaṅkara tvaddhyānabalataḥ śakrastrilokīṁ pāti putravat

"By the power of meditation upon you, O Shankara, the clouds pour down their rain; and by that same power, Shakra guards the three worlds as a father guards his own child."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.151.35)

त्वद्ध्यानबलतो मेघाः सर्वे देवा मुनीश्वराः । स्वाधिकारं च कुर्वन्ति चकिता भवतो भयात्

tvaddhyānabalato meghāḥ sarve devā munīśvarāḥ svādhikāraṁ ca kurvanti cakitā bhavato bhayāt

"By the power of meditation upon you, the clouds, all the gods, and the lords of sages, trembling in awe of you, carry out their own appointed offices."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.151.36)

त्वत्पादकमलस्यैव सेवनाद्भुवि मानवाः । नाद्रियन्ते सुरान् रुद्र लोकैश्वर्यं च भुञ्जते

tvatpādakamalasyaiva sevanādbhuvi mānavāḥ nādriyante surān rudra lokaiśvaryaṁ ca bhuñjate

"By service to your lotus feet alone, O Rudra, men upon this earth pay no heed even to the gods, and come to enjoy dominion over the worlds."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.151.37)

त्वत्पादकमलस्यैव सेवनादगमन्पराम् । गतिं योगधनानामप्यगम्यां सर्वदुर्लभाम्

tvatpādakamalasyaiva sevanādagamanparām gatiṁ yogadhanānāmapyagamyāṁ sarvadurlabhām

"By service to your lotus feet alone, they attain that supreme state — unreachable even by men whose wealth is yoga, most difficult of all to attain."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.151.38)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । बृहस्पतिरिति स्तुत्वा शङ्करं लोकशङ्करम् । पादयोः पातयामास तस्येशस्य पुरन्दरम्

sanatkumāra uvāca bṛhaspatiriti stutvā śaṅkaraṁ lokaśaṅkaram pādayoḥ pātayāmāsa tasyeśasya purandaram

Sanatkumara said: "Brihaspati, having thus praised Shankara, benefactor of the world, then made Purandara fall down at that Lord's feet."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.151.39)

पातयित्वा च देवेशमिन्द्रं नतशिरोधरम् । बृहस्पतिरुवाचेदं प्रश्रयावनतश्शिवम्

pātayitvā ca deveśamindraṁ nataśirodharam bṛhaspatiruvācedaṁ praśrayāvanataśśivam

Having made the lord of gods, Indra, bow his head low, Brihaspati, humbly bent, spoke thus to Shiva.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.151.40)

बृहस्पतिरुवाच । दीनानाथ महादेव प्रणतं तव पादयोः । समुद्धर च शान्तं स्वं क्रोधं नयनजं कुरु

bṛhaspatiruvāca dīnānātha mahādeva praṇataṁ tava pādayoḥ samuddhara ca śāntaṁ svaṁ krodhaṁ nayanajaṁ kuru

Brihaspati said: "O Mahadeva, Lord of the helpless, he lies bowed at your feet — lift him up, and set at peace this anger born of your own eye."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.151.41)

तुष्टो भव महादेव पाहीन्द्रं शरणागतम् । अग्निरेष शमं यातु भालनेत्रसमुद्भवः

tuṣṭo bhava mahādeva pāhīndraṁ śaraṇāgatam agnireṣa śamaṁ yātu bhālanetrasamudbhavaḥ

"Be pleased, O Mahadeva; protect Indra, who has come to you for refuge. Let this fire, born of the eye upon your brow, now subside."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.151.42)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य गुरोर्वाक्यं देवदेवो महेश्वरः । उवाच करुणासिन्धुर्मेघनिर्ह्रादया गिरा

sanatkumāra uvāca ityākarṇya gurorvākyaṁ devadevo maheśvaraḥ uvāca karuṇāsindhurmeghanirhrādayā girā

Sanatkumara said: "Hearing the guru's words, the God of gods, Maheshvara, ocean of compassion, spoke in a voice as deep as the rumble of thunderclouds."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.151.43)

महेश्वर उवाच । क्रोधं च निस्सृतं नेत्राद्धारयामि बृहस्पते । कथं हि कञ्चुकीं सर्पः सन्धत्ते नोज्झितां पुनः

maheśvara uvāca krodhaṁ ca nissṛtaṁ netrāddhārayāmi bṛhaspate kathaṁ hi kañcukīṁ sarpaḥ sandhatte nojjhitāṁ punaḥ

Maheshvara said: "O Brihaspati, how can I now hold back the anger already released from my eye? How, indeed, could a serpent take up again the very skin it has already shed?"

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.151.44)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य शङ्करस्य बृहस्पतिः । उवाच क्लिष्टरूपश्च भयव्याकुलमानसः

sanatkumāra uvāca iti śrutvā vacastasya śaṅkarasya bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca kliṣṭarūpaśca bhayavyākulamānasaḥ

Sanatkumara said: "Hearing this word of Shankara, Brihaspati, his face troubled, his mind distressed with fear, spoke."

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.151.45)

बृहस्पतिरुवाच । हे देव भगवन्भक्ता अनुकम्प्याः सदैव हि । भक्तवत्सलनामेति त्वं सत्यं कुरु शङ्कर

bṛhaspatiruvāca he deva bhagavanbhaktā anukampyāḥ sadaiva hi bhaktavatsalanāmeti tvaṁ satyaṁ kuru śaṅkara

Brihaspati said: "O god, O Lord, devotees are ever worthy of compassion. O Shankara, make true this very name of yours, 'affectionate to devotees.'"

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.151.46)

क्षेप्तुमन्यत्र देवेश स्वतेजोऽत्युग्रमर्हसि । उद्धर्तः सर्वभक्तानां समुद्धर पुरन्दरम्

kṣeptumanyatra deveśa svatejo'tyugramarhasi uddhartaḥ sarvabhaktānāṁ samuddhara purandaram

"O Lord of gods, you should cast this exceedingly fierce power of yours elsewhere; O deliverer of all your devotees, deliver Purandara now."

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.151.47)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्युक्तो गुरुणा रुद्रो भक्तवत्सलनामभाक् । प्रत्युवाच प्रसन्नात्मा सुरेज्यं प्रणतार्त्तिहा

sanatkumāra uvāca ityukto guruṇā rudro bhaktavatsalanāmabhāk pratyuvāca prasannātmā surejyaṁ praṇatārttihā

Sanatkumara said: "Thus addressed by the guru, Rudra — bearer of the name 'affectionate to devotees', remover of sorrow from those who bow to him — replied to the gods' preceptor with a gladdened heart."

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.151.48)

शिव उवाच । प्रीतः स्तुत्यानया तात ददामि वरमुत्तमम् । इन्द्रस्य जीवदानेन जीवेति त्वं प्रथां व्रज

śiva uvāca prītaḥ stutyānayā tāta dadāmi varamuttamam indrasya jīvadānena jīveti tvaṁ prathāṁ vraja

Shiva said: "Pleased by this praise, my child, I grant you a supreme boon: by this very gift of life to Indra, you shall go forth famed under the name Jiva."

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.151.49)

समुद्भूतोऽनलो योऽयं भालनेत्रात्सुरेशहा । एनं त्यक्ष्याम्यहं दूरे यथेन्द्रं नैव पीडयेत्

samudbhūto'nalo yo'yaṁ bhālanetrātsureśahā enaṁ tyakṣyāmyahaṁ dūre yathendraṁ naiva pīḍayet

"This fire, born of my forehead-eye, that would slay the lord of gods — I shall cast it far away, so that it may never harm Indra."

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.151.50)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा तं करे धृत्वा स्वतेजोऽनलमद्भुतम् । भालनेत्रात्समुद्भूतं प्राक्षिपल्लवणाम्भसि

sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktvā taṁ kare dhṛtvā svatejo'nalamadbhutam bhālanetrātsamudbhūtaṁ prākṣipallavaṇāmbhasi

Sanatkumara said: "Having said this, taking in his own hand that wondrous fire of his power, born from his forehead-eye, he cast it into the salt ocean."

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.151.51)

ततश्चान्तर्दधे रुद्रो महालीलाकरः प्रभुः । गुरुशक्रौ भयान्मुक्तौ जग्मतुः सुखमुत्तमम्

tataścāntardadhe rudro mahālīlākaraḥ prabhuḥ guruśakrau bhayānmuktau jagmatuḥ sukhamuttamam

Then Rudra, the Lord of that great and playful act, vanished from sight; and the guru and Shakra, now freed of fear, went their way in the greatest happiness.

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.151.52)

यदर्थं गमनोद्युक्तौ दर्शनं प्राप्य तस्य वै । कृतार्थौ गुरुशक्रौ हि स्वस्थानं जग्मतुर्मुदा

yadarthaṁ gamanodyuktau darśanaṁ prāpya tasya vai kṛtārthau guruśakrau hi svasthānaṁ jagmaturmudā

That very purpose for which they had set forth — having thus attained his vision, the guru and Shakra, their aim truly fulfilled, went joyfully to their own abodes.
