Chapter 151All chaptersChapter 153

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.152.1)

vyāsa uvāca sanatkumāra sarvajña brahmaputra namo'stu te śruteyamadbhutā me'dya kathā śambhormahātmanaḥ

Vyasa said: "O all-knowing Sanatkumara, son of Brahma, salutation to you. Today I have heard this wondrous tale of the great-souled Shambhu."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.152.2)

kṣipte svatejasi brahmanbhālanetrasamudbhave lavaṇāmbhasi kiṁ tātābhavattatra vadāśu tat

"O Brahmin, when that power, born of the forehead-eye, was cast into the salt ocean — what happened there, my child? Tell me quickly."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.152.3)

sanatkumāra uvāca śṛṇu tāta mahāprājña śivalīlāṁ mahādbhutām yacchrutvā śraddhayā bhakto yogināṁ gatimāpnuyāt

Sanatkumara said: "Listen, my greatly wise child, to this most wondrous play of Shiva — hearing which with faith, a devotee attains the very state of the yogis."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.152.4)

atho śivasya tattejo bhālanetrasamudbhavam kṣiptaṁ ca lavaṇāmbhodhau sadyo bālatvamāpa ha

Then Shiva's own power, born of his forehead-eye, once cast into the salt ocean, at once took the form of a newborn child.

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.152.5)

tatra vai sindhugaṅgāyāḥ sāgarasya ca saṅgame rurodoccaiḥ sa vai bālaḥ sarvalokabhayaṅkaraḥ

There, at the meeting of the river Sindhu-Ganga and the ocean, that child, terrifying to every world, wailed aloud.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.152.6)

rudatastasya śabdena prākampaddharaṇī muhuḥ svargaśca satyalokaśca tatsvanād badhirīkṛtaḥ

At the sound of his crying, the earth trembled again and again; heaven and Satyaloka were deafened by that thunderous din.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.152.7)

bālasya rodanenaiva sarve lokāśca tatrasuḥ sarvato lokapālāśca vihvalīkṛtamānasāḥ

By the child's crying alone, all the worlds were struck with terror, and the guardians of the quarters, on every side, were thrown into distress.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.152.8)

kiṁ bahūktena viprendra cacāla sacarācaram bhuvanaṁ nikhilaṁ tāta rodanāttacchiśorvibho

What need of many words, O foremost of Brahmins? The whole world, moving and unmoving, shook, my child, at that infant's weeping, O mighty one.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.152.9)

atha te vyākulāḥ sarve devāḥ samunayo drutam pitāmahaṁ lokaguruṁ brahmāṇaṁ śaraṇaṁ yayuḥ

Then all the gods, distraught, together with the sages, went swiftly for refuge to the Grandsire Brahma, preceptor of the worlds.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.152.10)

tatra gatvā ca te devā munayaśca savāsavāḥ praṇamya ca susaṁstutya procustaṁ parameṣṭhinam

Going there, those gods and sages, together with Vasava [Indra], bowed and duly praised him, and spoke to that one enthroned on high.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.152.11)

devā ūcuḥ lokādhīśa surādhīśa bhayaṁ naḥ samupasthitam tannāśaya mahāyogin jāto'yaṁ hyadbhuto ravaḥ

The gods said: "O ruler of the worlds, ruler of the gods, a great terror has beset us. Destroy it, O great yogi — this strange, thunderous roar has arisen."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.152.12)

sanatkumāra uvāca ityākarṇya vacasteṣāṁ brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ gantumaicchattatastatra kimetaditi vismitaḥ

Sanatkumara said: "Hearing their words, Brahma, grandsire of the worlds, astonished and wondering what this might be, resolved to go there."

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.152.13)

tato brahmā suraistātāvataratsatyalokataḥ rasāṁ tajjñātumicchansa samudramagamattadā

Then Brahma, my child, together with the gods, descended from Satyaloka; and, wishing to learn the truth of the matter, went then to the ocean.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.152.14)

yāvattatrāgato brahmā sarvalokapitāmahaḥ tāvatsamudrasyotsaṅge taṁ bālaṁ sa dadarśa ha

As soon as Brahma, grandsire of all the worlds, arrived there, he beheld that child cradled in the ocean's own lap.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.152.15)

āgataṁ vidhimālokya devarūpyatha sāgaraḥ praṇamya śirasā bālaṁ tasyotsaṅge nyaveśayat

Seeing Vidhi [Brahma] arrive, the Ocean, in his own divine form, bowed his head, and placed the child in Brahma's lap.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.152.16)

tato brahmābravīdvākyaṁ sāgaraṁ vismayānvitaḥ jalarāśe drutaṁ brūhi kasyāyaṁ śiśuradbhutaḥ

Then Brahma, filled with astonishment, spoke this word to the ocean: "O mass of waters, tell me quickly — whose is this wondrous infant?"

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.152.17)

sanatkumāra uvāca brahmaṇo vākyamākarṇya muditaḥ sāgarastadā pratyuvāca prajeśaṁ sa natvā stutvā kṛtāñjaliḥ

Sanatkumara said: "Hearing Brahma's words, the ocean, delighted, bowing and offering praise, hands folded, replied to the Lord of creatures."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.152.18)

samudra uvāca bho bho brahmanmayā prāpto bālako'yamajānatā prabhavaṁ sindhugaṅgāyāmakasmātsarvalokapa

The Ocean said: "O Brahmin, O Brahmin, O protector of all the worlds! I found this child, quite suddenly, in the Sindhu-Ganga — of his origin I know nothing."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.152.19)

jātakarmādisaṁskārānkuruṣvāsya jagadguro jātakoktaphalaṁ sarvaṁ vidhātarvaktumarhasi

"O preceptor of the world, perform for him the birth-rites and the other sacraments. O Vidhata, you alone should declare the full destiny told by his horoscope."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.152.20)

sanatkumāra uvāca evaṁ vadati pāthodhau sa bālaḥ sāgarātmajaḥ brahmāṇamagrahītkaṇṭhe vidhunvantaṁ muhurmuhuḥ

Sanatkumara said: "Even as the Ocean spoke thus, that child, the ocean's own son, seized Brahma by the throat, shaking him again and again."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.152.21)

vidhūnanaṁ ca tasyaivaṁ sarvalokakṛto vidheḥ pīḍitasya ca kāleya netrābhyāmagamajjalam

O son of Kali [Vyasa], from this violent shaking, Vidhi, the maker of all the worlds, was so distressed that water flowed forth from both his eyes.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.152.22)

karābhyāmabdhijātasya tatsutasya mahaujasaḥ kathañcinmuktakaṇṭhastu brahmā provāca sādaram

Somehow freeing his throat from the hands of that greatly powerful son of the ocean, Brahma then spoke with due regard.

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.152.23)

brahmovāca śṛṇu sāgara vakṣyāmi tavāsya tanayasya hi jātakoktaphalaṁ sarvaṁ samādhānarataḥ khalu

Brahma said: "Listen, O Ocean; steadying myself, I shall tell you all the fruits foretold by this son of yours' horoscope."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.152.24)

netrābhyāṁ vidhṛtaṁ yasmādanenaiva jalaṁ mama tasmājjalandharetīha khyāto nāmnā bhavatvasau

"Since it was he who drew water from my very eyes, let him henceforth become known by the name Jalandhara."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.152.25)

adhunaivaiṣa taruṇaḥ sarvaśāstrārthapāragaḥ mahāparākramo dhīro yoddhā ca raṇadurmadaḥ

"Even now this youth shall become one versed in the meaning of all the shastras — mighty in valor, resolute, a warrior fierce and unyielding in battle."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.152.26)

bhaviṣyati ca gambhīraḥ tvaṁ yathā samare guhaḥ sarvajetā ca saṅgrāme sarvasampadvirājitaḥ

"He shall be as grave and deep in battle as Guha [Kartikeya] himself — conqueror of all in war, resplendent with every fortune."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.152.27)

daityānāmadhipo bālaḥ sarveṣāṁ ca bhaviṣyati viṣṇorapi bhavejjetā na kutaścitparābhavaḥ

"This child shall become lord of all the daityas; he shall even prove victor over Vishnu — his defeat shall come from no quarter at all."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.152.28)

avadhyaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ vinā rudraṁ bhaviṣyati yata eṣa samudbhūtastatredānīṁ gamiṣyati

"He shall be unslayable by every being save Rudra, from whom he sprang; and now he shall go to that very source from which he arose."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.152.29)

pativratāsya bhavitā patnī saubhāgyavarddhinī sarvāṅgasundarī ramyā priyavākchīlasāgarā

"His wife shall be devoted to her husband, a bringer of good fortune, lovely in every limb, delightful, sweet-spoken, an ocean of virtue."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.152.30)

sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktvā śukramāhūya rājye taṁ cābhyaṣecayat āmantrya saritāṁ nāthaṁ brahmāntarddhānamanvagāt

Sanatkumara said: "Having spoken thus, Brahma summoned Shukra and had him consecrate the child to kingship; then, taking leave of the lord of the rivers, Brahma vanished from sight."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.152.31)

atha taddarśanotphullanayanaḥ sāgarastadā tamātmajaṁ samādāya svagehamagamanmudā

Then the ocean, his eyes bright with joy at this sight, took his son and went joyfully to his own home.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.152.32)

apoṣayanmahopāyaiḥ svabālaṁ muditātmakaḥ sarvāṅgasundaraṁ ramyaṁ mahādbhutasutejasam

Gladdened at heart, he nurtured with every care that child of his own — beautiful in every limb, lovely, of wondrous and mighty radiance.

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.152.33)

athāmbudhiḥ samāhūya kālanemiṁ mahāsuram vṛndābhidhāṁ sutāṁ tasya tadbhāryārthamayācata

Then the ocean, summoning the great asura Kalanemi, asked for the hand of his daughter, named Vrinda, to be Jalandhara's wife.

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.152.34)

kālanemyasuro vīro'surāṇāṁ pravaraḥ sudhīḥ sādhu menembudheryācñāṁ svakarmanipuṇo mune

O sage, Kalanemi, the heroic asura, foremost and wise among the asuras, skilled in his own duty, deemed the ocean's request a worthy one.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.152.35)

jalandharāya vīrāya sāgaraprabhavāya ca dadau brahmavidhānena svasutāṁ prāṇavallabhām

According to Vedic rite, he gave his own daughter, dear to him as life itself, to the heroic Jalandhara, born of the ocean.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.152.36)

tadotsavo mahānāsīdvivāhe ca tayostadā sukhaṁ prāpurnadā nadyo'surāścaivākhilā mune

O sage, at that wedding of theirs there was great festivity; the rivers, both male and female, and all the asuras were filled with joy.

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.152.37)

samudro'ti sukhaṁ prāpa sutaṁ dṛṣṭvā hi sastriyam dānaṁ dadau dvijātibhyo'pyanyebhyaśca yathāvidhi

The ocean rejoiced greatly, seeing his son now with his wife; he distributed gifts to the twice-born and to others besides, according to due rite.

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.152.38)

ye devairnirjitāḥ pūrvaṁ daityāḥ pātālasaṁsthitāḥ te hi bhūmaṇḍalaṁ yātā nirbhayāḥ tamupāśritāḥ

Those daityas who had earlier been conquered by the gods, and dwelt in Patala, now came up to the surface of the earth, fearless, and took refuge in him.

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.152.39)

te kālanemipramukhāstato'surāḥ tasmai sutāṁ sindhusutāya dattvā babhūvuratyantamudānvitā hi tamāśritā devavinirjayāya

Those asuras, Kalanemi foremost among them, having given their daughter to that son of the ocean, became exceedingly joyful, and, taking refuge in him, set their sights on conquering the gods.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.152.40)

sa cāpi vīro'mbudhibālako'sau jalandharākhyo'suravīravīraḥ samprāpya bhāryāmatisundarīṁ vaśī cakāra rājyaṁ hi kaviprabhāvāt

And that heroic son of the ocean, Jalandhara, a hero even among the heroes of the asuras, self-mastered, having won his most beautiful wife, ruled his kingdom by the power of Kavi [Shukra].
