The General War Between the Ganas and the Asuras

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.158.1)

व्यास उवाच । सनत्कुमार सर्वज्ञ कथा ते श्राविताद्भुता । महाप्रभोः शङ्करस्य यत्र लीला च पावनी

vyāsa uvāca sanatkumāra sarvajña kathā te śrāvitādbhutā mahāprabhoḥ śaṅkarasya yatra līlā ca pāvanī

Vyasa said: "O all-knowing Sanatkumara, you have told me a wondrous tale, in which lies the purifying play of the great lord Shankara."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.158.2)

इदानीं ब्रूहि सुप्रीत्या कृपां कृत्वा ममोपरि । राहुर्मुक्तः कुत्र गतः पुरुषेण महामुने

idānīṁ brūhi suprītyā kṛpāṁ kṛtvā mamopari rāhurmuktaḥ kutra gataḥ puruṣeṇa mahāmune

"Now, with kindness, out of compassion for me, tell me, O great sage — where did Rahu, released by that being, go?"

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.158.3)

सूत उवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य व्यासस्यामितमेधसः । प्रत्युवाच प्रसन्नात्मा ब्रह्मपुत्रो महामुनिः

sūta uvāca ityākarṇya vacastasya vyāsasyāmitamedhasaḥ pratyuvāca prasannātmā brahmaputro mahāmuniḥ

Suta said: "Hearing these words of Vyasa, whose intellect is boundless, the great sage, son of Brahma, his mind pleased, replied."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.158.4)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । राहुर्विमुक्तो यस्तेन सोऽपि तद्वर्वरस्थले । अतः स वर्वरो भूत इति भूमौ प्रथां गतः

sanatkumāra uvāca rāhurvimukto yastena so'pi tadvarvarasthale ataḥ sa varvaro bhūta iti bhūmau prathāṁ gataḥ

Sanatkumara said: "Rahu, released by him at that very Varvara place — since then he has become known on earth as 'Varvara.'"

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.158.5)

ततः स मन्यमानः स्वं पुनर्जनिमथानतः । गतगर्वो जगामाथ जलन्धरपुरं शनैः

tataḥ sa manyamānaḥ svaṁ punarjanimathānataḥ gatagarvo jagāmātha jalandharapuraṁ śanaiḥ

Then he, thinking he had been born again, his pride now gone, bowed down, slowly made his way to the city of Jalandhara.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.158.6)

जलन्धराय सोऽभ्येत्य सर्वमीशविचेष्टितम् । कथयामास तद्व्यासाद्व्यास दैत्येश्वराय वै

jalandharāya so'bhyetya sarvamīśaviceṣṭitam kathayāmāsa tadvyāsādvyāsa daityeśvarāya vai

O Vyasa, having come to Jalandhara, he related in full detail to that lord of daityas everything Ishvara had done.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.158.7)

जलन्धरस्तु तच्छ्रुत्वा कोपाकुलितविग्रहः । बभूव बलवान्सिन्धुपुत्रो दैत्येन्द्रसत्तमः

jalandharastu tacchrutvā kopākulitavigrahaḥ babhūva balavānsindhuputro daityendrasattamaḥ

But Jalandhara, hearing this, his body overcome with rage — that mighty son of the ocean, foremost of the lords of daityas — grew furious.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.158.8)

ततः कोपपराधीनमानसो दैत्यसत्तमः । उद्योगं सर्वसैन्यानां दैत्यानामादिदेश ह

tataḥ kopaparādhīnamānaso daityasattamaḥ udyogaṁ sarvasainyānāṁ daityānāmādideśa ha

Then that foremost of daityas, his mind now overpowered by wrath, commanded the mobilization of all the daitya armies.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.158.9)

जलन्धर उवाच । निर्गच्छन्त्वखिला दैत्याः कालनेमिमुखाः खलु । तथा शुम्भनिशुम्भाद्या वीराः स्वबलसंयुताः

jalandhara uvāca nirgacchantvakhilā daityāḥ kālanemimukhāḥ khalu tathā śumbhaniśumbhādyā vīrāḥ svabalasaṁyutāḥ

Jalandhara said: "Let all the daityas march forth, headed by Kalanemi, and likewise the heroes Shumbha, Nishumbha, and the rest, with their own forces."

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.158.10)

कोटिर्वीरकुलोत्पन्नाः कम्बुवंश्याश्च दौर्हृदाः । कालकाः कालकेयाश्च मौर्या धौम्रास्तथैव च

koṭirvīrakulotpannāḥ kambuvaṁśyāśca daurhṛdāḥ kālakāḥ kālakeyāśca mauryā dhaumrāstathaiva ca

"Ten million born of heroic clans, those of the Kambu lineage, the Daurhridas, the Kalakas, the Kalakeyas, the Mauryas, and the Dhaumras as well."

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.158.11)

इत्याज्ञाप्यासुरपतिः सिन्धुपुत्रः प्रतापवान् । निर्जगामाशु दैत्यानां कोटिभिः परिवारितः

ityājñāpyāsurapatiḥ sindhuputraḥ pratāpavān nirjagāmāśu daityānāṁ koṭibhiḥ parivāritaḥ

Having thus commanded, the powerful lord of asuras, son of the ocean, swiftly set forth, surrounded by ten millions of daityas.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.158.12)

ततस्तस्याग्रतः शुक्रो राहुश्छिन्नशिरोऽभवत् । मुकुटश्चापतद्भूमौ वेगात्प्रस्खलितस्तदा

tatastasyāgrataḥ śukro rāhuśchinnaśiro'bhavat mukuṭaścāpatadbhūmau vegātpraskhalitastadā

Then, before him, an ill-omened conjunction of Venus appeared, and Rahu seemed headless; his crown too, jolted by his speed, fell to the ground.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.158.13)

व्यराजत नभः पूर्णं प्रावृषीव यथा घनैः । जाता अशकुना भूरि महानिद्राविसूचकाः

vyarājata nabhaḥ pūrṇaṁ prāvṛṣīva yathā ghanaiḥ jātā aśakunā bhūri mahānidrāvisūcakāḥ

The sky, though clear, seemed as if massed with monsoon clouds; many ill omens arose, portents of a great, deathlike sleep.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.158.14)

तस्योद्योगं तथा दृष्ट्वा गीर्वाणास्ते सवासवाः । अलक्षितास्तदा जग्मुः कैलासं शङ्करालयम्

tasyodyogaṁ tathā dṛṣṭvā gīrvāṇāste savāsavāḥ alakṣitāstadā jagmuḥ kailāsaṁ śaṅkarālayam

Seeing his mobilization thus, the gods, with Vasava among them, went unseen at that time to Kailasa, the abode of Shankara.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.158.15)

तत्र गत्वा शिवं दृष्ट्वा सुप्रणम्य सवासवाः । देवाः सर्वे नतस्कन्धाः करौ बद्ध्वा च तुष्टुवुः

tatra gatvā śivaṁ dṛṣṭvā supraṇamya savāsavāḥ devāḥ sarve nataskandhāḥ karau baddhvā ca tuṣṭuvuḥ

Going there and seeing Shiva, all the gods, with Vasava, bowing well, their shoulders bent low, joined their hands and praised him.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.158.16)

देवा ऊचुः । देवदेव महादेव करुणाकर शङ्कर । नमस्तेऽस्तु महेशा न पाहि नः शरणागतान्

devā ūcuḥ devadeva mahādeva karuṇākara śaṅkara namaste'stu maheśā na pāhi naḥ śaraṇāgatān

The gods said: "O god of gods, Mahadeva, wellspring of compassion, Shankara! Salutations to you, great lord — protect us, who have come for refuge."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.158.17)

विह्वलाः वयमत्युग्रं जलन्धरकृतात्प्रभो । उपद्रवात्सदेवेन्द्राः स्थानभ्रष्टाः क्षितिस्थिताः

vihvalāḥ vayamatyugraṁ jalandharakṛtātprabho upadravātsadevendrāḥ sthānabhraṣṭāḥ kṣitisthitāḥ

"O lord, we, together with Devendra, distressed by the exceedingly fierce oppression wrought by Jalandhara, driven from our places, now dwell upon the earth."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.158.18)

न जानासि कथं स्वामिन्देवापत्तिमिमां प्रभो । तस्मान्नो रक्षणार्थाय जहि सागरनन्दनम्

na jānāsi kathaṁ svāmindevāpattimimāṁ prabho tasmānno rakṣaṇārthāya jahi sāgaranandanam

"How is it, my Lord, O master, that you do not know of this calamity of the gods? Therefore, for our protection, slay the son of the ocean."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.158.19)

अस्माकं रक्षणार्थाय यत्पूर्वं गरुडध्वजः । नियोजितस्त्वया नाथ न क्षमः सोऽद्य रक्षितुम्

asmākaṁ rakṣaṇārthāya yatpūrvaṁ garuḍadhvajaḥ niyojitastvayā nātha na kṣamaḥ so'dya rakṣitum

"O lord, he whom you had earlier appointed, the Garuda-bannered one, for our protection — he today is unable to protect us."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.158.20)

तदधीनो गृहे तस्य रमया सह तिष्ठति । वयं च तत्र तिष्ठामस्तदाज्ञावशगाः सुराः

tadadhīno gṛhe tasya ramayā saha tiṣṭhati vayaṁ ca tatra tiṣṭhāmastadājñāvaśagāḥ surāḥ

"Subject to him, he dwells in his house together with Rama; and we gods too dwell there, subject to his command."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.158.21)

अलक्षिता वयं चात्रागताः शम्भो त्वदन्तिकम् । स आयाति त्वया कर्त्तुं रणं सिन्धुसुतो बली

alakṣitā vayaṁ cātrāgatāḥ śambho tvadantikam sa āyāti tvayā karttuṁ raṇaṁ sindhusuto balī

"Unseen, we have come here, O Shambhu, into your presence; that mighty son of the ocean is now coming to do battle with you."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.158.22)

अतः स्वामिन् रणे त्वं तमविलम्बं जलन्धरम् । हन्तुमर्हसि सर्वज्ञ पाहि नः शरणागतान्

ataḥ svāmin raṇe tvaṁ tamavilambaṁ jalandharam hantumarhasi sarvajña pāhi naḥ śaraṇāgatān

"Therefore, my Lord, O all-knowing one, you ought without delay to slay that Jalandhara in battle; protect us, who have come for refuge."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.158.23)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा ते सुराः सर्वे प्रभुं नत्वा सवासवाः । पादौ निरीक्ष्य सन्तस्थुर्महेशस्य विनम्रकाः

sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktvā te surāḥ sarve prabhuṁ natvā savāsavāḥ pādau nirīkṣya santasthurmaheśasya vinamrakāḥ

Sanatkumara said: "Having spoken thus, all those gods, with Vasava, bowing to the Lord, stood gazing at Mahesha's feet, humbly."

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.158.24)

इति देववचः श्रुत्वा प्रहस्य वृषभध्वजः । द्रुतं विष्णुं समाहूय वचनं चेदमब्रवीत्

iti devavacaḥ śrutvā prahasya vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ drutaṁ viṣṇuṁ samāhūya vacanaṁ cedamabravīt

Hearing these words of the gods, the bull-bannered one, smiling, swiftly summoned Vishnu and spoke these words.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.158.25)

ईश्वर उवाच । हृषीकेश महाविष्णो देवाश्चात्र समागताः । जलन्धरकृतापीडाः शरणं मेऽतिविह्वलाः

īśvara uvāca hṛṣīkeśa mahāviṣṇo devāścātra samāgatāḥ jalandharakṛtāpīḍāḥ śaraṇaṁ me'tivihvalāḥ

Ishvara said: "O Hrishikesha, great Vishnu, the gods have gathered here, afflicted by Jalandhara, come to my refuge, greatly distressed."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.158.26)

जलन्धरः कथं विष्णो सङ्गरे न हतस्त्वया । तद् गृहं चापि यातोऽसि त्यक्त्वा वैकुण्ठमात्मनः

jalandharaḥ kathaṁ viṣṇo saṅgare na hatastvayā tad gṛhaṁ cāpi yāto'si tyaktvā vaikuṇṭhamātmanaḥ

"Why, O Vishnu, was Jalandhara not slain by you in battle? And why have you gone to his house, having abandoned your own Vaikuntha?"

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.158.27)

मया नियोजितस्त्वं हि साधुसंरक्षणाय च । निग्रहाय खलानां च स्वतन्त्रेण विहारिणा

mayā niyojitastvaṁ hi sādhusaṁrakṣaṇāya ca nigrahāya khalānāṁ ca svatantreṇa vihāriṇā

"By me you were appointed, in my sovereign freedom of play, for the protection of the righteous and for the restraint of the wicked."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.158.28)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य महेशस्य वचनं गरुडध्वजः । प्रत्युवाच विनीतात्मा नतकः साञ्जलिर्हरिः

sanatkumāra uvāca ityākarṇya maheśasya vacanaṁ garuḍadhvajaḥ pratyuvāca vinītātmā natakaḥ sāñjalirhariḥ

Sanatkumara said: "Hearing these words of Mahesha, the Garuda-bannered Hari, humble of mind, bowing, with joined hands, replied."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.158.29)

विष्णुरुवाच । तवांशसम्भवत्वाच्च भ्रातृत्वाच्च तथा श्रियः । मया न निहतः सङ्ख्ये त्वमेनं जहि दानवम्

viṣṇuruvāca tavāṁśasambhavatvācca bhrātṛtvācca tathā śriyaḥ mayā na nihataḥ saṅkhye tvamenaṁ jahi dānavam

Vishnu said: "Because he is born of a portion of you, and because of the bond of brotherhood, and for Shri's sake, I have not slain him in battle; you yourself slay this danava."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.158.30)

महाबलो महावीरोऽजेयस्सर्वदिवौकसाम् । अन्येषां चापि देवेश सत्यमेतद् ब्रवीम्यहम्

mahābalo mahāvīro'jeyassarvadivaukasām anyeṣāṁ cāpi deveśa satyametad bravīmyaham

"He is exceedingly powerful, a great hero, unconquerable by all the dwellers of heaven and by others too, O lord of gods; this I speak truly."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.158.31)

मया कृतो रणस्तेन चिरं देवान्वितेन वै । मदुपायो न प्रवृत्तस्तस्मिन्दानवपुङ्गवे

mayā kṛto raṇastena ciraṁ devānvitena vai madupāyo na pravṛttastasmindānavapuṅgave

"I fought a long battle with him, together with the gods, but no device of mine proved effective against that bull among danavas."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.158.32)

तत्पराक्रमतस्तुष्टो वरं ब्रूहीत्यहं खलु । इति मद्वचनं श्रुत्वा स वव्रे वरमुत्तमम्

tatparākramatastuṣṭo varaṁ brūhītyahaṁ khalu iti madvacanaṁ śrutvā sa vavre varamuttamam

"Pleased by his valor, I indeed said to him, 'Ask a boon.' Hearing these words of mine, he chose this excellent boon."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.158.33)

मद्भगिन्या मया सार्द्धं मद्गेहे ससुरो वस । मदधीनो महाविष्णो इत्यहं तद्गृहं गतः

madbhaginyā mayā sārddhaṁ madgehe sasuro vasa madadhīno mahāviṣṇo ityahaṁ tadgṛhaṁ gataḥ

"'Dwell in my house, together with my sister, along with the gods, subject to me, O great Vishnu.' Thus I went to his house."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.158.34)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इति विष्णोर्वचः श्रुत्वा शकरः स महेश्वरः । विहस्योवाच सुप्रीतः सदयो भक्तवत्सलः

sanatkumāra uvāca iti viṣṇorvacaḥ śrutvā śakaraḥ sa maheśvaraḥ vihasyovāca suprītaḥ sadayo bhaktavatsalaḥ

Sanatkumara said: "Hearing these words of Vishnu, Shankara, that Maheshvara, smiling, well pleased, compassionate, lover of his devotees, spoke."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.158.35)

महेश्वर उवाच । हे विष्णो सुरवर्य त्वं शृणु मद्वाक्यमादरात् । जलन्धरं महादैत्यं हनिष्यामि न संशयः

maheśvara uvāca he viṣṇo suravarya tvaṁ śṛṇu madvākyamādarāt jalandharaṁ mahādaityaṁ haniṣyāmi na saṁśayaḥ

Maheshvara said: "O Vishnu, best of gods, hear my words with respect; I shall slay the great daitya Jalandhara — of this there is no doubt."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.158.36)

स्वस्थानं गच्छ निर्भीतो देवा गच्छन्त्वपि ध्रुवम् । निर्भया वीतसन्देहा हतं मत्वाऽसुराधिपम्

svasthānaṁ gaccha nirbhīto devā gacchantvapi dhruvam nirbhayā vītasandehā hataṁ matvā'surādhipam

"Go to your own abode, unafraid; let the gods too go, without doubt, fearless, considering the lord of asuras as good as slain."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.158.37)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इति श्रुत्वा महेशस्य वचनं स रमापतिः । सनिर्जरो जगामाशु स्वस्थानं गतसंशयः

sanatkumāra uvāca iti śrutvā maheśasya vacanaṁ sa ramāpatiḥ sanirjaro jagāmāśu svasthānaṁ gatasaṁśayaḥ

Sanatkumara said: "Hearing these words of Mahesha, that lord of Rama, together with the immortals, his doubts gone, swiftly went to his own abode."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.158.38)

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे व्यास स दैत्येन्द्रोऽतिविक्रमः । सन्नद्धैरसुरैस्सार्द्धं शैलप्रान्तं ययौ बली

etasminnantare vyāsa sa daityendro'tivikramaḥ sannaddhairasuraissārddhaṁ śailaprāntaṁ yayau balī

Meanwhile, O Vyasa, that lord of daityas, of exceeding valor, that mighty one, together with his armed asuras, went to the mountain's edge.

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.158.39)

कैलासमवरुध्याथ महत्या सेनया युतः । सन्तस्थौ कालसङ्काशः कुर्वन्सिंहरवं महान्

kailāsamavarudhyātha mahatyā senayā yutaḥ santasthau kālasaṅkāśaḥ kurvansiṁharavaṁ mahān

Having besieged Kailasa, with his great army, he stood there, resembling Death itself, making a mighty lion-roar.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.158.40)

अथ कोलाहलं श्रुत्वा दैत्यनादसमुद्भवम् । चुक्रोधातिमहेशानो महालीलः खलान्तकः

atha kolāhalaṁ śrutvā daityanādasamudbhavam cukrodhātimaheśāno mahālīlaḥ khalāntakaḥ

Then, hearing the uproar arisen from the daityas' clamor, great Mahesha, of mighty play, destroyer of the wicked, grew exceedingly wrathful.

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.158.41)

समादिदेश सङ्ख्याय स्वगणान्स महाबलान् । नन्द्यादिकान्महादेवो महोतिः कौतुकी हरः

samādideśa saṅkhyāya svagaṇānsa mahābalān nandyādikānmahādevo mahotiḥ kautukī haraḥ

That Mahadeva, of great and playful deeds, mustered and commanded his own mighty ganas, headed by Nandi.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.158.42)

नन्दीभमुखसेनानीमुखास्सर्वे शिवाज्ञया । गणाश्च समनह्यन्त युद्धायातित्वरान्विताः

nandībhamukhasenānīmukhāssarve śivājñayā gaṇāśca samanahyanta yuddhāyātitvarānvitāḥ

All the generals headed by Nandi and the elephant-faced ones, and the ganas, at Shiva's command, armed themselves in the greatest haste for battle.

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.158.43)

अवतेरुर्गणाः सर्वे कैलासात्क्रोधदुर्मदाः । वल्गन्तो रणशब्दांश्च महावीरा रणाय हि

avaterurgaṇāḥ sarve kailāsātkrodhadurmadāḥ valganto raṇaśabdāṁśca mahāvīrā raṇāya hi

All the ganas, furious with rage, those great heroes, descended from Kailasa for battle, leaping and raising war-cries.

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.158.44)

ततः समभवद्युद्धं कैलासोपत्यकासु वै । प्रमथाधिपदैत्यानां घोरं शस्त्रास्त्रसङ्कुलम्

tataḥ samabhavadyuddhaṁ kailāsopatyakāsu vai pramathādhipadaityānāṁ ghoraṁ śastrāstrasaṅkulam

Then a terrible battle broke out on the slopes of Kailasa, thick with weapons and missiles, between the lords of the Pramathas and the daityas.

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.158.45)

भेरीमृदङ्गशङ्खौघैर्निःस्वानैर्वीरहर्षणैः । गजाश्वरथशब्दैश्च नादिता भूर्व्यकम्पत

bherīmṛdaṅgaśaṅkhaughairniḥsvānairvīraharṣaṇaiḥ gajāśvarathaśabdaiśca nāditā bhūrvyakampata

With the sounds of drums, kettledrums, and conches, sounds that thrilled the heroes, and with the noise of elephants, horses, and chariots, the earth resounded and trembled.

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.158.46)

शक्तितोमरबाणौघैर्मुसलैः पाशपट्टिशैः । व्यराजत नभः पूर्णं मुक्ताभिरिव संवृतम्

śaktitomarabāṇaughairmusalaiḥ pāśapaṭṭiśaiḥ vyarājata nabhaḥ pūrṇaṁ muktābhiriva saṁvṛtam

With floods of spears, javelins, and arrows, with clubs, nooses, and battle-axes, the filled sky shone as if covered with pearls.

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.158.47)

निहतैरिव नागाश्वैः पत्तिभिर्भूर्व्यराजत । वज्राहतैः पर्वतेन्द्रैः पूर्वमासीत्सुसंवृता

nihatairiva nāgāśvaiḥ pattibhirbhūrvyarājata vajrāhataiḥ parvatendraiḥ pūrvamāsītsusaṁvṛtā

The earth, strewn with slain elephants, horses, and footmen, shone as it had once been covered with mountains struck down by the thunderbolt.

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.158.48)

प्रमथाहतदैत्यौघैर्दैत्याहतगणैस्तथा । वसासृङ्मांसपङ्काढ्या भूरगम्याभवत्तदा

pramathāhatadaityaughairdaityāhatagaṇaistathā vasāsṛṅmāṁsapaṅkāḍhyā bhūragamyābhavattadā

Strewn with hosts of daityas slain by the Pramathas, and with ganas slain by the daityas, the earth, thick with a mire of fat, blood, and flesh, became impassable at that time.

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.158.49)

प्रमथाहतदैत्यौघान्भार्गवः समजीवयत् । युद्धे पुनः पुनश्चैव मृतसञ्जीवनी बलात्

pramathāhatadaityaughānbhārgavaḥ samajīvayat yuddhe punaḥ punaścaiva mṛtasañjīvanī balāt

Bhargava, by the power of his Mrita-sanjivani that revives the dead, again and again brought back to life the hosts of daityas slain by the Pramathas.

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.158.50)

दृष्ट्वा व्याकुलितांस्तांस्तु गणाः सर्वे भयार्दिताः । शशंसुर्देवदेवाय सर्वे शुक्रविचेष्टितम्

dṛṣṭvā vyākulitāṁstāṁstu gaṇāḥ sarve bhayārditāḥ śaśaṁsurdevadevāya sarve śukraviceṣṭitam

Seeing them thus revived again and again, all the ganas, distressed with fear, reported to the god of gods all that Shukra had done.

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.158.51)

तच्छ्रुत्वा भगवान् रुद्रश्चकार क्रोधमुल्बणम् । भयङ्करोऽतिरौद्रश्च बभूव प्रज्वलन्दिशः

tacchrutvā bhagavān rudraścakāra krodhamulbaṇam bhayaṅkaro'tiraudraśca babhūva prajvalandiśaḥ

Hearing this, the illustrious Rudra grew intensely wrathful; terrifying and exceedingly fierce, he blazed forth, setting the directions afire.

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.158.52)

अथ रुद्रमुखात्कृत्या बभूवातीव भीषणा । तालजङ्घा दरीवक्त्रा स्तनापीडितभूरुहा

atha rudramukhātkṛtyā babhūvātīva bhīṣaṇā tālajaṅghā darīvaktrā stanāpīḍitabhūruhā

Then from Rudra's mouth there arose an exceedingly terrifying sorceress-being, with shins like palm trees, a mouth like a cave, her breasts crushing the trees she brushed against.

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.158.53)

सा युद्धभूमिं तरसा ससाद मुनिसत्तम । विचचार महाभीमा भक्षयन्ती महासुरान्

sā yuddhabhūmiṁ tarasā sasāda munisattama vicacāra mahābhīmā bhakṣayantī mahāsurān

O best of sages, she swiftly settled upon the battlefield; that great and terrible one roamed about, devouring the great asuras.

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.158.54)

अथ सा रणमध्ये हि जगाम गतभीर्द्रुतम् । यत्रास्ते संवृतो दैत्यवरेन्द्रैस्स हि भार्गवः

atha sā raṇamadhye hi jagāma gatabhīrdrutam yatrāste saṁvṛto daityavarendraissa hi bhārgavaḥ

Then, fearless, she swiftly went into the midst of the battle, to where Bhargava was, surrounded by the foremost of the daityas.

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.158.55)

स्वतेजसा नभो व्याप्य भूमिं कृत्वा च सा मुने । भार्गवं स्वभगे धृत्वा जगामान्तर्हिता नभः

svatejasā nabho vyāpya bhūmiṁ kṛtvā ca sā mune bhārgavaṁ svabhage dhṛtvā jagāmāntarhitā nabhaḥ

O sage, pervading the sky with her own splendor and darkening the earth, she seized Bhargava, drawing him into herself, and vanished into the sky.

Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.158.56)

विधृतं भार्गवं दृष्ट्वा दैत्यसैन्यगणास्तथा । प्रम्लानवदना युद्धान्निर्जग्मुर्युद्धदुर्मदाः

vidhṛtaṁ bhārgavaṁ dṛṣṭvā daityasainyagaṇāstathā pramlānavadanā yuddhānnirjagmuryuddhadurmadāḥ

Seeing Bhargava thus seized, the daitya armies, their faces drooping, though furious in battle, withdrew from the fight.

Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.158.57)

अथोऽभज्यत दैत्यानां सेना गणभयार्दिता । वायुवेगहता यद्वत्प्रकीर्णा तृणसंहतिः

atho'bhajyata daityānāṁ senā gaṇabhayārditā vāyuvegahatā yadvatprakīrṇā tṛṇasaṁhatiḥ

Then the daitya army, terrified by the ganas, broke apart, as a heap of straw, struck by the force of the wind, is scattered.

Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.158.58)

भग्नां गणभयाद्दैत्यसेनां दृष्ट्वातिमर्षिताः । निशुम्भशुम्भौ सेनान्यौ कालनेमिश्च चुक्रुधुः

bhagnāṁ gaṇabhayāddaityasenāṁ dṛṣṭvātimarṣitāḥ niśumbhaśumbhau senānyau kālanemiśca cukrudhuḥ

Seeing the daitya army broken by fear of the ganas, the generals Nishumbha and Shumbha, and Kalanemi, greatly incensed, grew furious.

Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.158.59)

त्रयस्ते वारयामासुर्गणसेनां महाबलाः । मुञ्चन्तः शरवर्षाणि प्रावृषीव बलाहकाः

trayaste vārayāmāsurgaṇasenāṁ mahābalāḥ muñcantaḥ śaravarṣāṇi prāvṛṣīva balāhakāḥ

Those three mighty ones held back the army of ganas, loosing showers of arrows, like storm-clouds in the monsoon.

Verse 60 (shiva.rudra.158.60)

ततो दैत्यशरौघास्ते शलभानामिव व्रजाः । रुरुधुः खं दिशः सर्वा गणसेनामकम्पयन्

tato daityaśaraughāste śalabhānāmiva vrajāḥ rurudhuḥ khaṁ diśaḥ sarvā gaṇasenāmakampayan

Then those floods of daitya arrows, like swarms of locusts, blocked the sky and all directions, and made the army of ganas tremble.

Verse 61 (shiva.rudra.158.61)

गणाः शरशतैर्भिन्ना रुधिरासारवर्षिणः । वसन्तकिंशुकाभासा न प्राजानन्हि किञ्चन

gaṇāḥ śaraśatairbhinnā rudhirāsāravarṣiṇaḥ vasantakiṁśukābhāsā na prājānanhi kiñcana

The ganas, pierced by hundreds of arrows, streaming with torrents of blood, glowing like Kimshuka blossoms in spring, were utterly stupefied.

Verse 62 (shiva.rudra.158.62)

ततः प्रभग्नं स्वबलं विलोक्य नन्द्यादिलम्बोदरकार्त्तिकेयाः । त्वरान्विता दैत्यवरान्प्रसह्य निवारयामासुरमर्षणास्ते

tataḥ prabhagnaṁ svabalaṁ vilokya nandyādilambodarakārttikeyāḥ tvarānvitā daityavarānprasahya nivārayāmāsuramarṣaṇāste

Then, seeing their own forces broken, Nandi, Lambodara, and Kartikeya, filled with haste and indignation, forcibly held back those foremost daityas.
