The Battle with Jalandhara

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.160.1)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । अथ वीरगणै रुद्रो रौद्ररूपो महाप्रभुः । अभ्यगाद् वृषभारूढः सङ्ग्रामं प्रहसन्निव

sanatkumāra uvāca atha vīragaṇai rudro raudrarūpo mahāprabhuḥ abhyagād vṛṣabhārūḍhaḥ saṅgrāmaṁ prahasanniva

Sanatkumara said: "Then Rudra, the great lord in his terrible form, together with his hero-ganas, mounted on his bull, advanced toward the battle, as if smiling."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.160.2)

रुद्रमायान्तमालोक्य सिंहनादैर्गणाः पुनः । निवृत्ताः सङ्गरे रौद्रा ये हि पूर्वं पराजिताः

rudramāyāntamālokya siṁhanādairgaṇāḥ punaḥ nivṛttāḥ saṅgare raudrā ye hi pūrvaṁ parājitāḥ

Seeing Rudra approaching, those fierce ganas who had earlier been defeated returned once more to the battle, with lion-roars.

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.160.3)

वीरशब्दं च कुर्वन्तस्तेऽप्यन्ये शाङ्करा गणाः । सोत्सवाःसायुधा दैत्यान्निजघ्नुः शरवृष्टिभिः

vīraśabdaṁ ca kurvantaste'pyanye śāṅkarā gaṇāḥ sotsavāḥsāyudhā daityānnijaghnuḥ śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ

Those other ganas of Shankara too, raising their war-cries, jubilant, weapons in hand, struck down the daityas with showers of arrows.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.160.4)

दैत्या हि भीषणं रुद्रं सर्वे दृष्ट्वा विदुद्रुवुः । शाङ्करं पुरुषं दृष्ट्वा पातकानीव तद्भयात्

daityā hi bhīṣaṇaṁ rudraṁ sarve dṛṣṭvā vidudruvuḥ śāṅkaraṁ puruṣaṁ dṛṣṭvā pātakānīva tadbhayāt

All the daityas, seeing the terrifying Rudra, fled — as sins flee at the sight of a devotee of Shankara, out of fear of him.

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.160.5)

अथो जलन्धरो दैत्यान्निवृत्तान्प्रेक्ष्य सङ्गरे । अभ्यधावत्स चण्डीशं मुञ्चन्बाणान्सहस्रशः

atho jalandharo daityānnivṛttānprekṣya saṅgare abhyadhāvatsa caṇḍīśaṁ muñcanbāṇānsahasraśaḥ

Then Jalandhara, seeing his daityas turned back in the battle, rushed at Chandisha, loosing thousands of arrows.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.160.6)

निशुम्भशुम्भप्रमुखा दैत्येन्द्राश्च सहस्रशः । अभिजग्मुश्शिवं वेगाद्रोषात्सन्दष्टदच्छदाः

niśumbhaśumbhapramukhā daityendrāśca sahasraśaḥ abhijagmuśśivaṁ vegādroṣātsandaṣṭadacchadāḥ

The lords of daityas, by the thousands, headed by Nishumbha and Shumbha, their lips bitten in rage, advanced swiftly upon Shiva.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.160.7)

कालनेमिस्तथा वीरः खड्गरोमा बलाहकः । घस्मरश्च प्रचण्डश्चापरे चापि शिवं ययुः

kālanemistathā vīraḥ khaḍgaromā balāhakaḥ ghasmaraśca pracaṇḍaścāpare cāpi śivaṁ yayuḥ

The hero Kalanemi, and Khadgaroma, Balahaka, Ghasmara, Prachanda, and others too went against Shiva.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.160.8)

बाणैः सञ्छादयामासुर्द्रुतं रुद्रगणांश्च ते । अङ्गानि चिच्छिदुर्वीराः शुम्भाद्या निखिला मुने

bāṇaiḥ sañchādayāmāsurdrutaṁ rudragaṇāṁśca te aṅgāni cicchidurvīrāḥ śumbhādyā nikhilā mune

O sage, they swiftly covered the ganas of Rudra with arrows; those heroes, Shumbha and all the rest, cut through their limbs.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.160.9)

बाणान्धकारसञ्छन्नं दृष्ट्वा गणबलं हरः । तद्बाणजालमाच्छिद्य बाणैराववृते नभः

bāṇāndhakārasañchannaṁ dṛṣṭvā gaṇabalaṁ haraḥ tadbāṇajālamācchidya bāṇairāvavṛte nabhaḥ

Seeing the strength of the ganas covered over by a darkness of arrows, Hara, cutting through that net of arrows, filled the sky with his own.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.160.10)

दैत्यांश्च बाणवात्याभिः पीडितानकरोत्तदा । प्रचण्डबाणजालौघैरपातयत भूतले

daityāṁśca bāṇavātyābhiḥ pīḍitānakarottadā pracaṇḍabāṇajālaughairapātayata bhūtale

He then afflicted the daityas with storms of arrows, and with floods of fierce arrow-nets, felled them to the ground.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.160.11)

खड्गरोमशिरः कायात्तथा परशुनाच्छिनत् । बलाहकस्य च शिरः खट्वाङ्गेनाकरोद्द्विधा

khaḍgaromaśiraḥ kāyāttathā paraśunācchinat balāhakasya ca śiraḥ khaṭvāṅgenākaroddvidhā

He cut off Khadgaroma's head from his body with his axe, and split Balahaka's head in two with his khatvanga.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.160.12)

स बध्वा घस्मरं दैत्यं पाशेनाभ्यहनद्भुवि । महावीरं प्रचण्डं च चकर्त्त त्रिशिखेन ह

sa badhvā ghasmaraṁ daityaṁ pāśenābhyahanadbhuvi mahāvīraṁ pracaṇḍaṁ ca cakartta triśikhena ha

Binding the daitya Ghasmara with his noose, he struck him down to the ground; and he cut the great hero Prachanda apart with his trident.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.160.13)

वृषभेण हताः केचित्केचिद्बाणैर्निपातिता । न शेकुरसुराः स्थातुं गजा सिंहार्दिता इव

vṛṣabheṇa hatāḥ kecitkecidbāṇairnipātitā na śekurasurāḥ sthātuṁ gajā siṁhārditā iva

Some were slain by the bull, some felled by arrows; the asuras could not stand their ground, like elephants harried by a lion.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.160.14)

ततः क्रोधपरीतात्मा दैत्यान् धिक् कृतवान् रणे । शुम्भादिकान्महादैत्यः प्रहसन्प्राह धैर्यवान्

tataḥ krodhaparītātmā daityān dhik kṛtavān raṇe śumbhādikānmahādaityaḥ prahasanprāha dhairyavān

Then that great, steadfast daitya, his mind overcome with rage, reproached his daityas — Shumbha and the rest — in the battle, and, smiling, spoke.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.160.15)

जलन्धर उवाच । किं व उच्चरितैर्मातुर्धावद्भिः पृष्ठतो हतैः । न हि भीतवधः श्लाघ्यः स्वर्गदः शूरमानिनाम्

jalandhara uvāca kiṁ va uccaritairmāturdhāvadbhiḥ pṛṣṭhato hataiḥ na hi bhītavadhaḥ ślāghyaḥ svargadaḥ śūramāninām

Jalandhara said: "Of what use are you, fleeing, struck from behind? Death in fear is not praiseworthy, nor does it grant heaven to those who deem themselves brave."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.160.16)

यदि वः प्रधने श्रद्धा सारो वा क्षुल्लका हृदि । अग्रे तिष्ठत मात्रं मे न चेद्ग्राम्यसुखे स्पृहा

yadi vaḥ pradhane śraddhā sāro vā kṣullakā hṛdi agre tiṣṭhata mātraṁ me na cedgrāmyasukhe spṛhā

"If you have faith in battle, or even a little courage in your hearts, then simply stand before me; if not, then your longing must be for the pleasures of common village life."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.160.17)

रणे मृत्युर्वरश्चास्ति सर्वकामफलप्रदः । यशःप्रदो विशेषेण मोक्षदोऽपि प्रकीर्त्तितः

raṇe mṛtyurvaraścāsti sarvakāmaphalapradaḥ yaśaḥprado viśeṣeṇa mokṣado'pi prakīrttitaḥ

"Death in battle is indeed the best boon, granting the fruit of every desire; it is especially said to bestow fame, and even liberation."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.160.18)

सूर्यस्य मण्डलं भित्त्वा यायाद्वै परमं पदम् । परिव्राट् परमज्ञानी रणे यः सम्मुखे हतः

sūryasya maṇḍalaṁ bhittvā yāyādvai paramaṁ padam parivrāṭ paramajñānī raṇe yaḥ sammukhe hataḥ

"He who is slain facing the enemy in battle passes through the very orb of the sun to the supreme abode — like a wandering ascetic of the highest knowledge."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.160.19)

मृत्योर्भयं न कर्तव्यं कदाचित्कुत्रचिद्बुधैः । अनिवार्यो यतो ह्येष उपायैर्निखिलैरपि

mṛtyorbhayaṁ na kartavyaṁ kadācitkutracidbudhaiḥ anivāryo yato hyeṣa upāyairnikhilairapi

"The wise should never, anywhere, fear death; for it cannot be averted by any means whatsoever."

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.160.20)

मृत्युर्जन्मवतां वीरा देहेन सह जायते । अद्य वाब्दशतान्ते वा मृत्युर्वै प्राणिनां ध्रुवः

mṛtyurjanmavatāṁ vīrā dehena saha jāyate adya vābdaśatānte vā mṛtyurvai prāṇināṁ dhruvaḥ

"O heroes, death is born together with the body of every being that is born; whether today or at the end of a hundred years, death is certain for all creatures."

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.160.21)

तन्मृत्युभयमुत्सार्य युध्यध्वं समरे मुदा । सर्वथा परमानन्द इहामुत्राप्यसंशयः

tanmṛtyubhayamutsārya yudhyadhvaṁ samare mudā sarvathā paramānanda ihāmutrāpyasaṁśayaḥ

"Therefore, casting aside the fear of death, fight joyfully in battle; there is, without any doubt, supreme bliss in this, both here and in the world beyond."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.160.22)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा बोधयामास स्ववीरान्बहुशः स हि । धैर्यं दधुर्न ते भीत्या पलायन्तो रणाद् रुतम्

sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktvā bodhayāmāsa svavīrānbahuśaḥ sa hi dhairyaṁ dadhurna te bhītyā palāyanto raṇād rutam

Sanatkumara said: "Having spoken thus, he encouraged his heroes again and again; taking heart, they no longer fled the battle in fear."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.160.23)

अथ दृष्ट्वा स्वसैन्यं तत्पलायनपरायणम् । चुक्रोधाति महावीरः सिन्धुपुत्रो जलन्धरः

atha dṛṣṭvā svasainyaṁ tatpalāyanaparāyaṇam cukrodhāti mahāvīraḥ sindhuputro jalandharaḥ

Then, seeing his own army thus intent on flight, that great hero, the son of the ocean, Jalandhara, grew exceedingly enraged.

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.160.24)

ततः क्रोधपरीतात्मा क्रोधाद्रुद्रं जलन्धरः । आह्वापयामास रणे तीव्राशनिसमस्वनः

tataḥ krodhaparītātmā krodhādrudraṁ jalandharaḥ āhvāpayāmāsa raṇe tīvrāśanisamasvanaḥ

Then Jalandhara, his mind overcome with rage, his voice like the fiercest thunderbolt, in fury challenged Rudra to battle.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.160.25)

जलन्धर उवाच । युद्ध्यस्वाद्य मया सार्धं किमेभिर्निहतैस्तव । यच्च किञ्चिद्बलं तेऽस्ति तद्दर्शय जटाधर

jalandhara uvāca yuddhyasvādya mayā sārdhaṁ kimebhirnihataistava yacca kiñcidbalaṁ te'sti taddarśaya jaṭādhara

Jalandhara said: "Fight with me today; what use to you are these slain? Whatever strength you have, show it, O matted-locked one."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.160.26)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्युक्त्वा बाण सप्तत्या जघान वृषभध्वजम् । जलन्धरो महादैत्यः शम्भुमक्लिष्टकारिणम्

sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktvā bāṇa saptatyā jaghāna vṛṣabhadhvajam jalandharo mahādaityaḥ śambhumakliṣṭakāriṇam

Sanatkumara said: "Having spoken thus, the great daitya Jalandhara struck the bull-bannered Shambhu, who acts without effort, with seventy arrows."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.160.27)

तानप्राप्तान्महादेवो जलन्धरशरान्द्रुतम् । निजैर्हि निशितैर्बाणैश्चिच्छेद प्रहसन्निव

tānaprāptānmahādevo jalandharaśarāndrutam nijairhi niśitairbāṇaiściccheda prahasanniva

Mahadeva, as if smiling, swiftly cut down those arrows of Jalandhara with his own sharp arrows before they could reach him.

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.160.28)

ततो हयान्ध्वजं छत्रं धनुश्चिच्छेद सप्तभिः । जलन्धरस्य दैत्यस्य न तच्चित्रं हरे मुने

tato hayāndhvajaṁ chatraṁ dhanuściccheda saptabhiḥ jalandharasya daityasya na taccitraṁ hare mune

Then with seven arrows he cut down the horses, banner, parasol, and bow of the daitya Jalandhara — no wonder, O sage, for Hara.

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.160.29)

स च्छिन्नधन्वा विरथः पाथोधितनयोऽसुरः । अभ्यधावच्छिवं क्रुद्धो गदामुद्यम्य वेगवान्

sa cchinnadhanvā virathaḥ pāthodhitanayo'suraḥ abhyadhāvacchivaṁ kruddho gadāmudyamya vegavān

That asura, son of the ocean, his bow cut, his chariot gone, swiftly rushed at Shiva in fury, raising his mace.

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.160.30)

प्रभुर्गदां च तत्क्षिप्तां सहसैव महेश्वरः । पाराशर्य्य महालीलो द्रुतं बाणैर्द्विधाकरोत्

prabhurgadāṁ ca tatkṣiptāṁ sahasaiva maheśvaraḥ pārāśaryya mahālīlo drutaṁ bāṇairdvidhākarot

O son of Parashara, the Lord Maheshvara, of great and playful power, instantly split that hurled mace in two with his arrows.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.160.31)

तथापि मुष्टिमुद्यम्य महाक्रुद्धो महासुरः । अभ्युद्ययौ महावेगाद्रुद्रं तं तज्जिघांसया

tathāpi muṣṭimudyamya mahākruddho mahāsuraḥ abhyudyayau mahāvegādrudraṁ taṁ tajjighāṁsayā

Even so, that great asura, raising his fist in great fury, rushed with great speed at Rudra, desiring to slay him.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.160.32)

तावदेवेश्वरेणाशु बाणोघैः स जलन्धरः । अक्लिष्टकर्मकारेण क्रोशमात्रमपाकृतः

tāvadeveśvareṇāśu bāṇoghaiḥ sa jalandharaḥ akliṣṭakarmakāreṇa krośamātramapākṛtaḥ

At once Ishvara, who acts without effort, with a flood of arrows drove that Jalandhara back a full krosha's distance.

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.160.33)

ततो जलन्धरो दैत्यो रुद्रं मत्वा बलाधिकम् । ससर्ज मायां गान्धर्वीमद्भुतां रुद्रमोहिनीम्

tato jalandharo daityo rudraṁ matvā balādhikam sasarja māyāṁ gāndharvīmadbhutāṁ rudramohinīm

Then the daitya Jalandhara, judging Rudra to be superior in strength, created a wondrous, gandharva-illusion meant to bewilder Rudra.

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.160.34)

तस्य मायाप्रभावात्तु गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणाः । आविर्भूता अनेके च रुद्रमोहनहेतवे

tasya māyāprabhāvāttu gandharvāpsarasāṁ gaṇāḥ āvirbhūtā aneke ca rudramohanahetave

By the power of that maya, many hosts of gandharvas and apsaras appeared, for the purpose of bewildering Rudra.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.160.35)

ततो जगुश्च ननृतुर्गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणाः । तालवेणुमृदङ्गांश्च वादयन्ति स्म चापरे

tato jaguśca nanṛturgandharvāpsarasāṁ gaṇāḥ tālaveṇumṛdaṅgāṁśca vādayanti sma cāpare

Then those hosts of gandharvas and apsaras sang and danced, while others played cymbals, flutes, and mridangas.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.160.36)

तद् दृष्ट्वा महदाश्चर्यं गणै रुद्रो विमोहितः । पतितान्यपि शस्त्राणि करेभ्यो न विवेद सः

tad dṛṣṭvā mahadāścaryaṁ gaṇai rudro vimohitaḥ patitānyapi śastrāṇi karebhyo na viveda saḥ

Seeing that great wonder, Rudra was bewildered by the gandharva-hosts; he did not even notice his weapons falling from his hands.

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.160.37)

एकाग्रीभूतमालोक्य रुद्रं दैत्यो जलन्धरः । कामतस्स जगामाशु यत्र गौरी स्थिताऽभवत्

ekāgrībhūtamālokya rudraṁ daityo jalandharaḥ kāmatassa jagāmāśu yatra gaurī sthitā'bhavat

Seeing Rudra thus utterly absorbed, the daitya Jalandhara, driven by desire, swiftly went to where Gauri was.

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.160.38)

युद्धे शुम्भनिशुम्भाख्यौ स्थापयित्वा महाबलौ । दशदोर्दण्डपञ्चास्यस्त्रिनेत्रश्च जटाधरः

yuddhe śumbhaniśumbhākhyau sthāpayitvā mahābalau daśadordaṇḍapañcāsyastrinetraśca jaṭādharaḥ

Leaving the mighty Shumbha and Nishumbha in charge of the battle, he — ten-armed, five-faced, three-eyed, matted-locked —

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.160.39)

महावृषभमारूढस्सर्वथा रुद्रसन्निभः । आसुर्य्या मायया व्यास स बभूव जलन्धरः

mahāvṛṣabhamārūḍhassarvathā rudrasannibhaḥ āsuryyā māyayā vyāsa sa babhūva jalandharaḥ

— mounted on a great bull, resembling Rudra in every respect: O Vyasa, by his asuric maya, Jalandhara took on that very form.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.160.40)

अथ रुद्रं समायान्तमालोक्य भववल्लभा । अभ्याययौ सखीमध्यात्तद्दर्शनपथेऽभवत्

atha rudraṁ samāyāntamālokya bhavavallabhā abhyāyayau sakhīmadhyāttaddarśanapathe'bhavat

Then Bhava's beloved, seeing what seemed to be Rudra approaching, came forth from among her companions and appeared before his sight.

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.160.41)

यावद्ददर्श चार्वङ्गी पार्वतीं दनुजेश्वरः । तावत्स वीर्यं मुमुचे जडाङ्गश्चाभवत्तदा

yāvaddadarśa cārvaṅgī pārvatīṁ danujeśvaraḥ tāvatsa vīryaṁ mumuce jaḍāṅgaścābhavattadā

The very moment that lord of danavas beheld the lovely-limbed Parvati, he lost his seed and his body became numb.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.160.42)

अथ ज्ञात्वा तदा गौरी दानवं भयविह्वला । जगामान्तर्हिता वेगात्सा तदोत्तरमानसम्

atha jñātvā tadā gaurī dānavaṁ bhayavihvalā jagāmāntarhitā vegātsā tadottaramānasam

Then Gauri, at once recognizing him as the danava, overcome with fear, vanished swiftly, going to Uttaramanasa.

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.160.43)

तामदृष्ट्वा ततो दैत्यः क्षणाद्विद्युल्लतामिव । जवेनागात्पुनर्योद्धुं यत्र देवो महेश्वरः

tāmadṛṣṭvā tato daityaḥ kṣaṇādvidyullatāmiva javenāgātpunaryoddhuṁ yatra devo maheśvaraḥ

Not finding her, the daitya, like a flash of lightning gone in an instant, swiftly returned to where the god Maheshvara was, to fight again.

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.160.44)

पार्वत्यपि महाविष्णुं सस्मार मनसा तदा । तावद्ददर्श तं देवं सोपविष्टं समीपगम्

pārvatyapi mahāviṣṇuṁ sasmāra manasā tadā tāvaddadarśa taṁ devaṁ sopaviṣṭaṁ samīpagam

Parvati too then called Mahavishnu to mind; and at once she saw that god, seated nearby, having come close.

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.160.45)

तं दृष्ट्वा पार्वती विष्णुं जगन्माता शिवप्रिया । प्रसन्नमनसोवाच प्रणमन्तं कृताञ्जलिम्

taṁ dṛṣṭvā pārvatī viṣṇuṁ jaganmātā śivapriyā prasannamanasovāca praṇamantaṁ kṛtāñjalim

Seeing Vishnu, Parvati, mother of the universe, beloved of Shiva, her mind at ease, spoke to him as he bowed with joined hands.

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.160.46)

पार्वत्युवाच । विष्णो जलन्धरो दैत्यः कृतवान्परमाद्भुतम् । तत्किं न विदितं तेऽस्ति चेष्टितं तस्य दुर्मतेः

pārvatyuvāca viṣṇo jalandharo daityaḥ kṛtavānparamādbhutam tatkiṁ na viditaṁ te'sti ceṣṭitaṁ tasya durmateḥ

Parvati said: "O Vishnu, the daitya Jalandhara has done a most astonishing thing — is the conduct of that evil-minded one not known to you?"

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.160.47)

तच्छ्रुत्वा जगदम्बाया वचनं गरुडध्वजः । प्रत्युवाच शिवां नत्वा साञ्जलिर्नम्रकन्धरः

tacchrutvā jagadambāyā vacanaṁ garuḍadhvajaḥ pratyuvāca śivāṁ natvā sāñjalirnamrakandharaḥ

Hearing these words of the mother of the universe, the Garuda-bannered one, bowing to Shiva, his head bent, hands joined, replied.

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.160.48)

श्रीभगवानुवाच । भवत्याः कृपया देवि तद्वृत्तं विदितं मया । यदाज्ञापय मां मातस्तत्कुर्य्यां त्वदनुज्ञया

śrībhagavānuvāca bhavatyāḥ kṛpayā devi tadvṛttaṁ viditaṁ mayā yadājñāpaya māṁ mātastatkuryyāṁ tvadanujñayā

The illustrious Lord said: "By your grace, O goddess, that matter is known to me. Command me, O mother, and by your leave I shall do it."

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.160.49)

सनत्कुमार उचाच तच्छ्रुत्वा विष्णुवचनं पुनरप्याह पार्वती ॥ हृषीकेशं जगन्माता धर्मनीतिं सुशिक्षयन्

sanatkumāra ucāca tacchrutvā viṣṇuvacanaṁ punarapyāha pārvatī hṛṣīkeśaṁ jaganmātā dharmanītiṁ suśikṣayan

Sanatkumara said: "Hearing Vishnu's words, Parvati, mother of the universe, again spoke to Hrishikesha, well instructing him in the way of dharma."

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.160.50)

पार्वत्युवाच । तेनैव दर्शितः पन्था बुध्यस्व त्वं तथैव हि । तत्स्त्रीपातिव्रतं धर्मं भ्रष्टं कुरु मदाज्ञया

pārvatyuvāca tenaiva darśitaḥ panthā budhyasva tvaṁ tathaiva hi tatstrīpātivrataṁ dharmaṁ bhraṣṭaṁ kuru madājñayā

Parvati said: "The path has been shown by that very deed of his; understand it accordingly. By my command, cause that woman's chastity to be broken."

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.160.51)

नान्यथा स महादैत्यो भवेद्वध्यो रमेश्वर । पातिव्रतसमो नान्यो धर्मोऽस्ति पृथिवीतले

nānyathā sa mahādaityo bhavedvadhyo rameśvara pātivratasamo nānyo dharmo'sti pṛthivītale

"Otherwise, O lord of Rama, that great daitya cannot be slain; for there is no dharma on earth equal to a wife's chastity."

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.160.52)

सनत्कुमार उवाच । इत्यनुज्ञां समाकर्ण्य शिरसाधाय तां हरिः । छल कर्त्तुं जगामाशु पुनर्जालन्धरं पुरम्

sanatkumāra uvāca ityanujñāṁ samākarṇya śirasādhāya tāṁ hariḥ chala karttuṁ jagāmāśu punarjālandharaṁ puram

Sanatkumara said: "Hearing this command, and bearing it upon his head in reverent acceptance, Hari swiftly went again to the city of Jalandhara, to perform the deception."
