Rudra Samhita · Chapter 161
The Breaking of Vrinda's Chastity and Her Death
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.161.1)
vyāsa uvāca sanatkumāra sarvajña vada tvaṁ vadatāṁ vara kimakārṣīddharistatra dharmaṁ tatyāja sā katham
Vyasa said: "O all-knowing Sanatkumara, best of speakers, tell me — what did Hari do there, and how did she come to abandon her dharma?"
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.161.2)
sanatkumāra uvāca viṣṇurjālandharaṁ gatvā daityasya puṭabhedanam pātivratyasya bhaṅgāya vṛndāyāścākaronmatim
Sanatkumara said: "Vishnu, going to the city of Jalandhara, that daitya's capital, resolved upon breaking the chastity of Vrinda."
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.161.3)
vṛndāṁ sa darśayāmāsa svapnaṁ māyāvināṁ varaḥ svayaṁ tannagarodyānamāsthito'dbhutavigrahaḥ
That best of illusionists showed Vrinda a dream, while he himself, in a wondrous form, took his place in that city's garden.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.161.4)
atha vṛndā tadā devī tatpatnī niśi suvratā harermāyāprabhāvāttu dussvapnaṁ sā dadarśa ha
Then Vrinda, that devoted lady, his wife, of good vows, by the power of Hari's maya, that night saw a terrible dream.
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.161.5)
svapnamadhye hi sā viṣṇumāyayā pradadarśa ha bharttāraṁ mahiṣārūḍhaṁ tailābhyaktaṁ digambaram
In the midst of that dream, by Vishnu's maya, she beheld her husband mounted on a buffalo, smeared with oil, unclothed.
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.161.6)
kṛṣṇaprasūnabhūṣāḍhyaṁ kravyādagaṇasevitam dakṣiṇāśāṁ gataṁ muṇḍaṁ tamasā ca vṛtaṁ tadā
Adorned with dark flowers, attended by hosts of flesh-eating spirits, his head shaved, going toward the southern direction, enveloped in darkness.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.161.7)
svapuraṁ sāgare magnaṁ sahasaivātmanā saha ityādi bahuduḥsvapnānniśānte sā dadarśa ha
She saw her own city suddenly sinking into the ocean, together with herself; such were the many terrible dreams she beheld at the end of that night.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.161.8)
tataḥ prabudhya sā bālā taṁ svapnaṁ svaṁ vicinvatī dadarśoditamādityaṁ sacchidraṁ niṣprabhaṁ muhuḥ
Then, awakening, that young woman, pondering her own dream, again and again saw the risen sun as if pierced with holes and without radiance.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.161.9)
tadaniṣṭamidaṁ jñātvā rudantī bhayavihvalā kutracinnāpa sā śarma gopurāṭṭālabhūmiṣu
Knowing this to be an ill omen, weeping, overcome with fear, she found comfort nowhere, whether at the city-gates or upon the palace terraces.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.161.10)
tataḥsakhīdvayayutā nagarodyānamāgamat tatrāpi sā gatā bālā na prāpa kutracitsukham
Then, together with two companions, she came to the city garden; but even there that young woman found happiness nowhere.
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.161.11)
tato jalandharastrī sā nirviṇṇodvignamānasā vanādvanāntaraṁ yātā naiva vedātmanā tadā
Then Jalandhara's wife, dejected, her mind agitated, wandered from one forest to another, no longer even aware of herself.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.161.12)
bhramatī sā tato bālā dadarśātīva bhīṣaṇau rākṣasau siṁhavadanau dṛṣṭvā daśanabhāsurau
Wandering thus, that young woman then saw two exceedingly terrifying rakshasas, lion-faced, their teeth gleaming.
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.161.13)
tau dṛṣṭvā vihvalātīva palāyanaparā tadā dadarśa tāpasaṁ śāntaṁ saśiṣyaṁ maunamāsthitam
Seeing them, utterly overcome, intent on flight, she then saw a calm ascetic, seated in silence together with his disciple.
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.161.14)
tatastatkaṇṭhamāsādya nijāṁ bāhulatāṁ bhayāt mune māṁ rakṣa śaraṇamāgatāsmītyabhāṣata
Then, in her fear, throwing her own arms around his neck, she said: "O sage, protect me — I have come for refuge."
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.161.15)
munistāṁ vihvalāṁ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasānugatāṁ tadā huṅkāreṇaiva tau ghorau cakāra vimukhau drutam
The sage, seeing her thus distraught and pursued by the rakshasas, with a mere hum swiftly turned those two terrible ones away.
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.161.16)
tad huṅkārabhayatrastau dṛṣṭvā tau vimukhau gatau vismitātīva daityendrapatnī sābhūnmune hṛdi
Seeing those two turn away, terrified by that hum, the wife of the lord of daityas was, O sage, exceedingly astonished at heart.
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.161.17)
tatassā munināthaṁ taṁ bhayānmuktā kṛtāñjaliḥ praṇamya daṇḍavadbhūmau vṛndā vacanamabravīt
Then, freed from fear, Vrinda, with joined hands, bowing prostrate on the ground to that lord of sages, spoke these words.
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.161.18)
vṛndovāca muninātha dayāsindho parapīḍānivāraka rakṣitāhaṁ tvayā ghorādbhayādasmātkhalodbhavāt
Vrinda said: "O lord of sages, ocean of compassion, remover of others' distress — I have been saved by you from this terrible fear born of the wicked."
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.161.19)
samarthaḥ sarvathā tvaṁ hi sarvajño'pi kṛpānidhe kiñcidvijñaptumicchāmi kṛpayā tanniśāmaya
"You are wholly capable, and all-knowing too, O treasury of compassion; I wish to make a request — kindly hear it."
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.161.20)
jalandharo hi madbharttā rudraṁ yoddhuṁ gataḥ prabho sa tatrāste kathaṁ yuddhe tanme kathaya suvrata
"O lord, my husband Jalandhara has gone to fight Rudra; O one of good vows, tell me how he fares there in battle."
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.161.21)
sanatkumāra uvāca munistadvākyamākarṇya maunaṁ kapaṭamāsthitaḥ karttuṁ svārthaṁ vidhānajñaḥ kṛpayordhvamavaikṣata
Sanatkumara said: "The sage, hearing her words, maintained a deceptive silence; skilled in his design, to accomplish his own purpose, he glanced upward, feigning compassion."
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.161.22)
tāvatkapīśāvāyātau taṁ praṇamyāgrataḥ sthitau tatastadbhrūlatāsaṁjñāniyuktau gaganaṁ gatau
Just then two monkey-lords arrived, and, bowing to him, stood before him; then, directed by a sign of his eyebrow, they went into the sky.
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.161.23)
nītvā kṣaṇārddhamāgatya punastasyāgrataḥ sthitau tasyaiva kaṁ kabandhaṁ ca hastāvāstāṁ munīśvara
O lord of sages, taking but half a moment, they returned and again stood before him, bearing in their hands his very head and headless trunk.
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.161.24)
śiraḥ kabandhaṁ hastau tau dṛṣṭvābdhitanayasya sā papāta mūrcchitā bhūmau bhartṛvyasanaduḥkhitā
Seeing in their hands the head and headless trunk of the son of the ocean, she, stricken with grief at her husband's calamity, fell fainting to the ground.
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.161.25)
Vrinda said: "O my lord, you who once delighted me with joyful conversation — why do you not speak to me today, your beloved, who am innocent?"
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.161.26)
yena devāḥ sagandharvā nirjitā viṣṇunā saha kathaṁ sa tāpasenādya trailokyavijayī hataḥ
"He by whom the gods, with the gandharvas, and even Vishnu, were conquered — how has that conqueror of the three worlds today been slain by a mere ascetic?"
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.161.27)
nāṅgīkṛtaṁ hi me vākyaṁ rudratattvamajānatā paraṁ brahma śivaśceti vadantyā daityasattama
"O best of daityas, you never accepted my words when I told you — not knowing the truth of Rudra — that Shiva is the supreme Brahman itself."
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.161.28)
tatastvaṁ hi mayā jñātastava sevāprabhāvataḥ garvitena tvayā naiva kusaṅgavaśagena hi
"Then, through my devoted service, I truly came to know you; yet you, proud and given over to evil company, never truly knew me."
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.161.29)
itthaṁ prabhāṣya bahudhā svadharmasthā ca tatpriyā vilalāpa vicitraṁ sā hṛdayena vidūyatā
Having spoken thus in many ways, that devoted wife, steadfast in her own dharma, lamented piteously, her heart consumed with anguish.
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.161.30)
tataḥsā dhairyamālambya duḥkhocchvāsānvimuñcatī uvāca munivaryaṁ taṁ supraṇamya kṛtāñjaliḥ
Then, taking hold of her courage, heaving sighs of sorrow, she addressed that excellent sage, bowing well with joined hands.
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.161.31)
kṛpānidhe muniśreṣṭha paropakaraṇādara mayi kṛtvā kṛpāṁ sādho jīvayainaṁ mama prabhum
"O treasury of compassion, best of sages, honoring the good of others — O holy one, showing mercy upon me, restore my lord to life."
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.161.32)
yattvamasya punaḥ śakto jīvanāya mato mama ataḥ sañjīvayainaṁ me prāṇanāthaṁ munīśvara
"I believe you are indeed capable of restoring him to life again; therefore, O lord of sages, revive this lord of my life."
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.161.33)
sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktvā daityapatnī sā pativratyaparāyaṇā pādayoḥ patitā tasya duḥkhaśvāsān vimuñcatī
Sanatkumara said: "Having spoken thus, that wife of the daitya, devoted wholly to her chastity, fell at his feet, heaving sighs of sorrow."
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.161.34)
muniruvāca nāyaṁ jīvayituṁ śakto rudreṇa nihato yudhi rudreṇa nihatā yuddhe na jīvanti kadācana
The sage said: "This one cannot be restored to life, slain in battle by Rudra; those slain by Rudra in battle never live again."
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.161.35)
tathāpi kṛpayāviṣṭa enaṁ sañjīvayāmyaham rakṣyāḥ śaraṇagāśceti jānandharmaṁ sanātanam
"Even so, overcome with compassion, I shall revive him — knowing the eternal dharma that those who take refuge must be protected."
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.161.36)
Sanatkumara said: "O sage, having spoken thus, that sage, having revived her husband, Vishnu, best of all wielders of maya, then vanished."
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.161.37)
drutaṁ sa jīvitastenotthitaḥ sāgaranandanaḥ vṛndāmāliṅgya tadvaktraṁ cucumba prītamānasaḥ
Swiftly restored to life by him, the son of the ocean rose up, and embracing Vrinda, his mind full of love, kissed her face.
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.161.38)
atha vṛndāpi bhartāraṁ dṛṣṭvā harṣitamānasā jahau śokaṁ ca nikhilaṁ svapnavad hṛdyamanyata
Then Vrinda too, seeing her husband, her mind filled with joy, gave up all her sorrow, considering it in her heart like a mere dream.
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.161.39)
atha prasannahṛdayā sā hi sañjātahṛcchayā reme tadvanamadhyasthā tadyuktā bahuvāsarān
Then, her heart at peace, desire having arisen within her, she sported there in the midst of that forest, united with him, for many days.
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.161.40)
kadācitsuratasyānte dṛṣṭvā viṣṇuṁ tameva hi nirbhartsya krodhasaṁyuktā vṛndā vacanamabravīt
Once, at the end of their union, seeing that it was indeed Vishnu, Vrinda, reproaching him, filled with wrath, spoke these words.
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.161.41)
vṛndovāca dhik tadevaṁ hare śīlaṁ paradārābhigāminaḥ jñāto'si tvaṁ mayā samyaṅmāyī pratyakṣatāpasaḥ
Vrinda said: "Shame on such conduct, O Hari, you who approach another's wife! I have now clearly recognized you — a deceiver, disguised as an ascetic before my very eyes."
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.161.42)
sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktvā krodhamāpannā darśayantī svatejasam śaśāpa keśavaṁ vyāsa pātivratyaratā ca sā
Sanatkumara said: "O Vyasa, having spoken thus, overcome with wrath, manifesting her own spiritual power, that woman devoted to chastity cursed Keshava."
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.161.43)
re mahādhama daityāre paradharmavidūṣaka gṛhṇīṣva śaṭha maddattaṁ śāpaṁ sarvaviṣolbaṇam
"'O most vile enemy of the daityas, corrupter of another's dharma! O deceiver, receive this curse I give you, more virulent than any poison.'"
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.161.44)
yau tvayā māyayā khyātau svakīyau darśitau mama tāveva rākṣasau bhūtvā bhāryāṁ tava hariṣyataḥ
"'Those two whom you, by your maya, showed me claiming them as your own — those very two, becoming rakshasas, shall abduct your own wife.'"
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.161.45)
tvaṁ cāpi bhāryāduḥkhārto vane kapisahāyavān bhrama sarpeśvareṇāyaṁ yaste śiṣyatvamāgataḥ
"'And you too, tormented by grief for your wife, aided by monkeys, shall wander in the forest — this one here, who has become your disciple, together with the lord of serpents.'"
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.161.46)
ityuktvā sā tadā vṛndā praviśaddhavyavāhanam viṣṇunā vāryamāṇāpi tatsthitāsaktacetasā
Having spoken thus, Vrinda then entered the fire, even as Vishnu tried to restrain her, her mind fixed and unmoved.
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.161.47)
tasminnavasare devā brahmādyā nikhilā mune āgatāḥ khe samaṁ dāraiḥ sadgatiṁ vai didṛkṣavaḥ
At that moment, O sage, all the gods, headed by Brahma, together with their wives, came into the sky, wishing to witness her blessed passage.
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.161.48)
atha daityendrapatnyāstu tajjyotiḥ paramaṁ mahat paśyatāṁ sarvadevānāmalokamagamaddrutam
Then, as all the gods looked on, the supreme, great radiance of the wife of the lord of daityas swiftly went up to a realm beyond.
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.161.49)
śivātanau vilīnaṁ tadvṛndātejo babhūva ha āsījjayajayārāvaḥ khasthitāmarapaṅktiṣu
That radiance of Vrinda merged into the body of Shiva; and cries of "Victory! Victory!" arose among the ranks of immortals standing in the sky.
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.161.50)
evaṁ vṛndā mahārājñī kālanemisutottamā pātivratyaprabhāvācca muktiṁ prāpa parāṁ mune
Thus, O sage, Vrinda, the great queen, foremost daughter of Kalanemi, attained supreme liberation through the power of her chastity.
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.161.51)
Then Hari, remembering her again and again, covered in the ash-dust of Vrinda's funeral pyre, remained right there; though the hosts of gods and siddhas tried to console him, he found no peace.
