The Slaying of Jalandhara

Chapter 161All chaptersChapter 163

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.162.1)

vyāsa uvāca vidheḥ śreṣṭhasuta prājñaḥ katheyaṁ śrāvitādbhutā tataśca kimabhūdājau kathaṁ daityo hato vada

Vyasa said: "O wise, foremost son of Brahma, you have told me this wondrous tale; now tell me what happened next in the battle, and how the daitya was slain."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.162.2)

sanatkumāra uvāca adṛśya girijāṁ tatra daityendre raṇamāgate gāndharve ca vilīne hi caitanyo'bhūdvṛṣadhvajaḥ

Sanatkumara said: "There, when Girija had vanished from sight, and the lord of daityas had come for battle, and the gandharva-illusion had dissolved, the bull-bannered one regained his consciousness."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.162.3)

antardhānagatāṁ māyāṁ dṛṣṭvā buddho hi śaṅkaraḥ cukrodhātīva saṁhārī laukikīṁ gatimāśritaḥ

Shankara, now awakened, seeing that the maya had vanished, taking on a worldly demeanor, the destroyer, grew exceedingly wrathful.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.162.4)

tataḥ śivo vismitamānasaḥ puna- rjagāma yuddhāya jalandharaṁ ruṣā sa cāpi daityaḥ punarāgataṁ śivaṁ dṛṣṭvā śaroghaiḥsamavākiradraṇe

Then Shiva, his mind astonished, in fury went again to battle Jalandhara; and that daitya too, seeing Shiva returned, showered him with floods of arrows in the fight.

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.162.5)

kṣiptaṁ prabhustaṁ śarajālamugraṁ jalandhareṇātibalīyasā haraḥ drutaṁ pracicchedaśarairvarairnijai- rna citramatra tribhavaprahantuḥ

That terrible net of arrows, hurled by the exceedingly mighty Jalandhara, Lord Hara swiftly cut apart with his own excellent arrows — no wonder, indeed, for the destroyer of the three states of being.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.162.6)

tato jalandharo dṛṣṭvā rudramadbhutavikramam cakāra māyayā gaurīṁ tryambakaṁ mohayanniva

Then Jalandhara, seeing Rudra's wondrous prowess, by his maya conjured a vision of Gauri, as if to bewilder the three-eyed one.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.162.7)

rathopari gatāṁ baddhāṁ rudantīṁ pārvatīṁ śivaḥ niśumbhaśumbhadaityaiśca vadhyamānāṁ dadarśa saḥ

Shiva then saw what appeared to be Parvati, bound, weeping, mounted upon a chariot, being assailed by the daityas Nishumbha and Shumbha.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.162.8)

gaurīṁ tathāvidhāṁ dṛṣṭvā laukikīṁ darśayan gatim babhūva prākṛta iva śivo'pyudvignamānasaḥ

Seeing Gauri in that state, and showing a worldly response, even Shiva became, as it were, an ordinary being, his mind agitated.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.162.9)

avāṅmukhasthitastūṣṇīṁ nānālīlāviśāradaḥ śithilāṅgo viṣaṇṇātmā vismṛtya svaparākramam

He who is skilled in every kind of divine play stood silent, his face cast down, his limbs slack, his heart despondent, forgetting his own might.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.162.10)

tato jalandharo vegāt tribhirvivyādha sāyakaiḥ āpuṅkhamagnaistaṁ rudraṁ śirasyurasi codare

Then Jalandhara, with speed, pierced Rudra with three arrows sunk feather-deep, in the head, the chest, and the belly.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.162.11)

tato rudro mahālīlo jñātatattvaḥ kṣaṇātprabhuḥ raudrarūpadharo jāto jvālāmālātibhīṣaṇaḥ

Then Rudra, the great player, the lord, in an instant recognizing the deception, took on his terrible form, exceedingly fearsome with garlands of flame.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.162.12)

Seeing his exceedingly terrible, great form, the great asuras could not stand before him, and fled in all ten directions.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.162.13)

niśumbhaśumbhāvapi yau vikhyātau vīrasattamau api tau śekaturnaiva raṇe sthātuṁ munīśvara

O lord of sages, even Nishumbha and Shumbha, those two renowned and foremost heroes, could not stand their ground in that battle either.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.162.14)

jalandharakṛtā māyāntarhitābhūcca tatkṣaṇam hāhākāro mahānāsītsaṅgrāme sarvatomukhe

The illusion wrought by Jalandhara vanished that very instant, and a great cry of lamentation arose on every side of the battlefield.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.162.15)

tataḥ śāpaṁ dadau rudrastayoḥ śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ palāyamānau tau dṛṣṭvā dhikkṛtya krodhasaṁyutaḥ

Then Rudra, seeing those two, Shumbha and Nishumbha, fleeing, reproached them in fury and pronounced a curse upon them.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.162.16)

rudra uvāca yuvāṁ duṣṭāvatikhalāvaparādhakarau mama pārvatīdaṇḍadātārau raṇādasmātparāṅmukhau

Rudra said: "You two, wicked and exceedingly vile, offenders against me, who inflicted torment on Parvati — you now turn your backs on this battle."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.162.17)

parāṅmukho na hantavya iti vadhyau na me yuvām mama yuddhādatikrāntau gauryyā vadhyau bhaviṣyataḥ

"One who has turned his back is not to be slain — for this reason you two shall not be slain by me. But, having fled from my battle, you shall become fit to be slain by Gauri."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.162.18)

evaṁ vadati gaurīśe sindhuputro jalandharaḥ cukrodhātīva rudrāya jvalajjvalanasannibhaḥ

While the lord of Gauri was speaking thus, the son of the ocean, Jalandhara, blazing like fire, grew exceedingly wrathful against Rudra.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.162.19)

rudre raṇe mahāvegādvavarṣa niśitān śarān bāṇāndhakārasañchannaṁ tathā bhūmitalaṁ hyabhūt

With the greatest speed he rained sharp arrows upon Rudra in battle, so that the surface of the earth became covered in a darkness of arrows.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.162.20)

yāvad rudraḥ praciccheda tasya bāṇagaṇān drutam tāvatsa parigheṇāśu jaghāna vṛṣabhaṁ balī

Just as Rudra swiftly cut down his volleys of arrows, that mighty one at once struck Rudra's bull with his iron mace.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.162.21)

vṛṣastena prahāreṇa paravṛtto raṇāṅgaṇāt rudreṇa kṛśyamāṇo'pi na tasthau raṇabhūmiṣu

By that blow the bull was driven back from the field of battle; though restrained by Rudra, he would not remain on the battlefield.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.162.22)

atha loke mahārudraḥ svīyaṁ tejo'tiduḥsaham darśayāmāsa sarvasmai satyametanmunīśvara

O lord of sages, then great Rudra revealed to the entire world his own splendor, unbearable to all — this is the truth.

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.162.23)

tataḥ paramasaṅkruddho rudro raudravapurdharaḥ pralayānalavad ghoro babhūva sahasā prabhuḥ

Then Rudra, supremely enraged, taking on his terrible form, that Lord instantly became as fearsome as the fire of universal dissolution.

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.162.24)

dṛṣṭvā puraḥsthitaṁ daityaṁ merukūṭamiva sthitam avadhyatvamapi śrutvāpyanyairabhyudyato'bhavat

Seeing the daitya standing before him like the peak of Mount Meru, and having heard too that he was unslayable by others, he prepared to act.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.162.25)

brahmaṇo vacanaṁ rakṣan rakṣako jagatāṁ prabhuḥ hṛdānugrahamātanvaṁstadvadhāya mano dadhat

That Lord, protector of the worlds, upholding Brahma's word, extending grace in his heart even as he set his mind upon slaying him.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.162.26)

kopaṁ kṛtvā paraṁ śūlī pādāṅguṣṭhena līlayā mahāmbhasi cakārāśu rathāṅgaṁ raudramadbhutam

Wielding great wrath, the trident-bearer, with a mere play of his toe, swiftly fashioned in the great waters a wondrous, terrible discus.

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.162.27)

kṛtvārṇavāmbhasi śitaṁ bhagavān rathāṅgaṁ smṛtvā jagattrayamanena hataṁ purāriḥ dakṣāndhakāntakapuratrayayajñahantā lokatrayāntakakaraḥ prahasannuvāca

Having fashioned that sharp discus in the ocean waters, the illustrious foe of Tripura, recalling that the three worlds had been oppressed by him — he who ended Daksha and Andhaka, who burned the triple city, who destroyed the sacrifice, the ender of the three worlds — smiling, spoke.

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.162.28)

mahārudra uvāca pādena nirmitaṁ cakraṁ jalandhara mahāmbhasi balavānyadi coddharttuṁ tiṣṭha yoddhuṁ na cānyathā

Maharudra said: "O Jalandhara, this discus was fashioned by my foot in the great ocean; if you are strong enough to lift it, then stand and fight — otherwise not."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.162.29)

sanatkumāra uvāca tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā krodhenādīptalocanaḥ pradahanniva cakṣurbhyāṁ prāhālokya sa śaṅkaram

Sanatkumara said: "Hearing these words, his eyes blazing with rage, as if burning with his very gaze, he looked at Shankara and spoke."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.162.30)

jalandhara uvāca rekhāmuddhṛtya hatvā ca sagaṇaṁ tvāṁ hi śaṅkara hatvā lokānsuraiḥ sārdhaṁ svabhāgaṁ garuḍo yathā

Jalandhara said: "O Shankara, lifting that mark, and slaying you together with your ganas, and slaying the worlds along with the gods — I shall claim my own share, as Garuda does."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.162.31)

hantuṁ carācaraṁ sarvaṁ samartho'haṁ savāsavam ko maheśvara madbāṇairabhedyo bhuvanatraye

"I am capable of slaying all that moves and is still, together with Vasava; O Maheshvara, who in the three worlds is impenetrable to my arrows?"

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.162.32)

bālabhāvena bhagavāntapasaiva vinirjitaḥ brahmā baliṣṭhaḥ sthāne me munibhiḥ surapuṅgavaiḥ

"Even in my boyhood, by mere austerity, I conquered the illustrious ones; mighty Brahma stands in awe of me, along with sages and the foremost of gods."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.162.33)

dagdhaṁ kṣaṇena sakalaṁ trailokyaṁ sacarācaram tapasā kiṁ tvayā rudra nirjito bhagavānapi

"In an instant I burned the entire three worlds, with all that moves and is still. What have you accomplished by austerity, O Rudra? Even the illustrious ones have I conquered."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.162.34)

indrāgniyamavitteśavāyuvārīśvarādayaḥ na sehire yathā nāgā gandhaṁ pakṣipateriva

"Indra, Agni, Yama, the lord of wealth, Vayu, the lord of the waters, and the rest — they could not bear my presence, as serpents cannot bear the scent of the king of birds."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.162.35)

na labdhaṁ divi bhūmau ca vāhanaṁ mama śaṅkara samastānparvatānprāpya dharṣitāśca gaṇeśvarāḥ

"O Shankara, neither in heaven nor on earth has any mount been found equal to mine; having overpowered all the mountains, I have humbled the lords of the ganas too."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.162.36)

girīndro mandaraḥ śrīmānnīlo meruḥ suśobhanaḥ dharṣito bāhudaṇḍena kaṇḍvā utsarpaṇāya me

"Mount Mandara, the lord of mountains, glorious; Nila; and beautiful Meru — all have been assailed by the strength of my arm, merely to ease my itching."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.162.37)

gaṅgā niruddhā bāhubhyāṁ līlārthaṁ himavadgirau arīṇāṁ mama bhṛtyaiśca jayo labdho divaukasām

"The Ganga I held back with my two arms upon the Himalaya, merely in sport; and my enemies, the dwellers of heaven, have been conquered by my servants."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.162.38)

vaḍavāyā mukhaṁ baddhaṁ gṛhītvā tāṁ kareṇa tu tatkṣaṇādeva sakalamekārṇavamabhūttadā

"Seizing the submarine mare-fire with my hand, I bound its mouth; and in that very instant the whole world became a single ocean."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.162.39)

airāvatādayo nāgāḥ kṣiptāḥ sindhujalopari saratho bhagavānindraḥ kṣiptaśca śatayojanam

"Airavata and the other elephants I hurled upon the ocean's waters; and the illustrious Indra, chariot and all, I flung a hundred yojanas away."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.162.40)

garuḍo'pi mayā baddho nāgapāśena viṣṇunā urvaśyādyā mayānītā nāryaḥ kārāgṛhāntaram

"Garuda too, together with Vishnu, I bound with the serpent-noose; and Urvashi and other women I have carried off into the prison house."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.162.41)

māṁ na jānāsi rudra tvaṁ trailokyajayakāriṇam jalandharaṁ mahādaityaṁ sindhuputraṁ mahābalam

"You do not know me, O Rudra — me, the conqueror of the three worlds, the great daitya Jalandhara, the son of the ocean, of mighty strength."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.162.42)

sanatkumāra uvāca ityuktvātha mahādevaṁ tadā vāridhinandanaḥ na cacāla na sasmāra nihatāndānavānyudhi

Sanatkumara said: "Having spoken thus to Mahadeva, that son of the ocean did not waver, nor did he give any thought to the danavas already slain in battle."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.162.43)

durmadenāvinītena dorbhyāmāsphoṭya dorbalāt tiraskṛto mahādevo vacanaiḥ kaṭukākṣaraiḥ

Insolent and ill-mannered, striking his two arms together in the pride of his strength, he insulted Mahadeva with harsh and bitter words.

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.162.44)

tacchrutvā daityavacanamamaṅgalamatīritam vijahāsa mahādevaḥ paramaṁ krodhamādadhe

Hearing that daitya's inauspicious, unrestrained speech, Mahadeva laughed, even as he took on the greatest wrath.

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.162.45)

sudarśanākhyaṁ yaccakraṁ pādāṅguṣṭhavinirmitam jagrāha tatkare rudrastena hantuṁ samudyataḥ

Rudra took up in his hand that discus named Sudarshana, fashioned by his own toe, and made ready to slay him with it.

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.162.46)

sudarśanākhyaṁ taccakraṁ cikṣepa bhagavānharaḥ koṭisūryapratīkāśaṁ pralayānalasannibham

The illustrious Hara hurled that discus named Sudarshana, resembling ten million suns, blazing like the fire of universal dissolution.

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.162.47)

pradahadrodasī vegāttadāsādya jalandharam jahāra tacchiro vegānmahadāyatalocanam

Burning heaven and earth with its speed, reaching Jalandhara, it swiftly carried off his head, with its great, wide eyes.

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.162.48)

rathātkāyaḥ papātorvyāṁ nādayanvasudhātalam śiraścāpyabdhiputrasya hāhākāro mahānabhūt

His body fell from the chariot to the earth, making the ground resound; and at the fall of the head of the son of the ocean, a great cry of lamentation arose.

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.162.49)

dvidhā papāta taddeho hyañjanādririvācalaḥ kuliśena yathā vārānnidhau girivaro dvidhā

His body fell split in two, like the mountain of collyrium; as a great mountain, once, was split in two in the ocean by the thunderbolt.

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.162.50)

tasya raudreṇa raktena sampūrṇamabhavajjagat tataḥsamastā pṛthivī vikṛtābhūnmunīśvara

O lord of sages, the whole world became filled with his terrible blood; and then the entire earth became disfigured.

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.162.51)

tadraktamakhilaṁ rudraniyogānmāṁsameva ca mahārauravamāsādya raktakuṇḍamabhūdiha

All that blood, and the flesh too, by Rudra's ordinance, gathering at Maharaurava, became here a pool of blood.

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.162.52)

tattejo nirgataṁ dehād rudre ca layamāgamat vṛndādehodbhavaṁ yadvadgauryyāṁ hi vilayaṁ gatam

That radiance, departing from his body, merged into Rudra — just as the radiance born of Vrinda's body had merged into Gauri.

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.162.53)

jalandharaṁ hataṁ dṛṣṭvā devagandharvapannagāḥ abhavansuprasannāśca sādhu deveti cābruvan

Seeing Jalandhara slain, the gods, gandharvas, and serpents became greatly rejoiced, and cried out, "Well done, O Lord!"

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.162.54)

sarve prasannatāṁ yātā devasiddhamunīśvarāḥ puṣpavṛṣṭiṁ prakurvāṇāstadyaśo jaguruccakaiḥ

All the gods, siddhas, and lords of sages became joyful, raining down flowers, and sang his glory aloud.

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.162.55)

devāṅganā mahāmodānnanṛtuḥ premavihvalāḥ kalasvarāḥ kalapadaṁ kinnaraiḥ saha sañjaguḥ

The celestial women danced in great joy, overcome with love, and, sweet of voice, sang melodious songs together with the Kinnaras.

Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.162.56)

diśaḥ praseduḥ sarvāśca hate vṛndāpatau mune vavuḥ puṇyāḥ sukhasparśā vāyavastrividhā api

O sage, at the death of Vrinda's husband, all the directions grew clear, and the threefold winds blew pure and pleasant to the touch.

Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.162.57)
