Rudra Samhita · Chapter 17
Gunanidhi-charitra
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.17.1)
sūta uvāca | ityākarṇya vacastasya brahmaṇaḥ sa tu nāradaḥ | punaḥ papraccha taṁ natvā vinayena munīśvarāḥ
Suta said: Having heard these words of Brahma, that Narada, foremost among the lords of sages, bowed and again asked, with humility.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.17.2)
nārada uvāca | kadā gato hi kailāsaṁ śaṅkaro bhaktavatsalaḥ | kva vā sakhitvaṁ tasyāsīt kubereṇa mahātmanā
Narada said: When did Shankara, compassionate to his devotees, go to Kailasa? And where did his friendship with the great soul Kubera come about?
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.17.3)
kiṁ cakāra harastatra paripūrṇaḥ śivākṛtiḥ | etatsarvaṁ samācakṣva paraṁ kautūhalaṁ mama
What did Hara, that all-perfect one of Shiva's very form, do there? Tell me all of this — I am filled with great curiosity about it.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.17.4)
brahmovāca | śṛṇu nārada vakṣyāmi caritaṁ śaśimaulinaḥ | yathā jagāma kailāsaṁ sakhitvaṁ dhanadasya ca
Brahma said: Listen, Narada — I shall tell the story of the moon-crested one, how he went to Kailasa and came to friendship with Dhanada, the lord of wealth.
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.17.5)
asīt kāmpilyanagare somayājikulodbhavaḥ | dīkṣito yajñadattākhyo yajñavidyāviśāradaḥ
In the city of Kampilya there lived a consecrated brahmin (dikshita) named Yajnadatta, born in a family of Soma-sacrificers, and highly skilled in the science of sacrifice.
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.17.6)
vedavedāṅgavitprājño vedāntādiṣu dakṣiṇaḥ | rājamānyo'tha bahudhā vadānyaḥ kīrtibhājanaḥ
He was learned in the Vedas and Vedangas, wise, accomplished in Vedanta and other disciplines, honored by kings, generous in many ways, and a vessel of great renown.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.17.7)
agniśuśrūṣaṇarato vedādhyayanatatparaḥ | sundaro ramaṇīyāṅgaścandrabimbasamākṛtiḥ
He was devoted to the tending of the sacred fire, intent on the study of the Vedas, handsome, of lovely limbs, and radiant like the orb of the moon.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.17.8)
āsīd guṇanidhirnāma dīkṣitasyāsya vai sutaḥ | kṛtopanayanaḥ so'ṣṭau vidyāṁ jagrāha bhūriśaḥ || atha pitrānabhijñāto dyūtakarmarato'bhavat
This dikshita had a son named Gunanidhi. After his sacred-thread ceremony, he took up many branches of learning — but then, unknown to his father, he became given over to gambling.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.17.9)
ādāyādāya bahuśo dhanaṁ mātuḥ sakāśataḥ | samadād dyūtakārebhyo maitrīṁ taiśca cakāra saḥ
Again and again he took money from his mother and gave much of it to gamblers, forming friendships with them.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.17.10)
santyaktabrāhmaṇācāraḥ sandhyāsnānaparāṅmukhaḥ | nindako vedaśāstrāṇāṁ devabrāhmaṇanindakaḥ
He abandoned the conduct proper to a brahmin, turned away from the evening prayers and ablutions, and took to reviling the Vedas and scriptures, and even the gods and brahmins.
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.17.11)
smṛtyācāravihīnastu gītavādyavinodabhāk | naṭapākhaṇḍabhāṇḍaistu baddhapremaparamparaḥ
Void of the conduct enjoined by the scriptures, he became given to the pleasures of song and music, and bound himself in deep affection to actors, charlatans, and buffoons.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.17.12)
Even when repeatedly urged by his mother, he would not go near his father. Meanwhile, the dikshita, engrossed in household affairs, would ask his wife —
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.17.13)
yadā yadaiva tāṁ pṛcchedaye guṇanidhiḥ sutaḥ | na dṛśyate mayā gehe kalyāṇi vidadhāti kim
whenever the father would ask her, 'O auspicious one, our son Gunanidhi is nowhere to be seen in the house — what is he doing?' —
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.17.14)
tadā tadeti sā brūyādidānīṁ sa bahirgataḥ | snātvā samarcya vai devānetāvantamanehasam
then she would say, 'He has just now gone out; having bathed and worshipped the gods, this much time has already passed —
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.17.15)
adhītyādhyayanārthaṁ sa dvitrairmitraiḥ samaṁ yayau | ekaputreti tanmātā pratārayati dīkṣitam
he has gone with two or three friends for the sake of study.' Thus, thinking 'he is my only son,' his mother went on deceiving the dikshita.
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.17.16)
That dikshita knew nothing at all of his son's deeds or conduct. In his sixteenth year, he had all the tonsure rites duly performed for him.
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.17.17)
atho sa dīkṣito yajñadattaḥ putrasya tasya ca | gṛhyoktena vidhānena pāṇigrāhamakārayam
Then that dikshita Yajnadatta had his son's marriage (pani-graha) performed, according to the rite prescribed in the domestic (grihya) texts.
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.17.18)
pratyahaṁ tasya jananī sutaṁ guṇanidhiṁ mṛdu | śāsti snehārdrahṛdayā hyupaveśya sma nārada
Every day, O Narada, his mother, her heart softened with affection, would seat her son Gunanidhi gently and instruct him thus:
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.17.19)
krodhanaste'sti tanaya sa mahātmā pitetyalam | yadi jñāsyati te vṛttaṁ tvāṁ ca māṁ tāḍayiṣyati
'My son, your father is prone to anger and is a great soul — enough said. If he comes to know your conduct, he will beat both you and me.'
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.17.20)
ācchādayāmi te nityaṁ pituragre kuceṣṭitam | lokamānyo'sti te tātaḥ sadācārairna vai dhanaiḥ
'Every day I hide your misdeeds from your father. Your father is honored in this world for his good conduct, not merely for his wealth.'
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.17.21)
brāhmaṇānāṁ dhanaṁ tāta sadvidyā sādhusaṅgamaḥ | kimarthaṁ na karoṣi tvaṁ svaruciṁ prītamānasaḥ
'The true wealth of brahmins, my son, is good learning and the company of the virtuous. Why do you not, with a glad heart, act according to your own good nature?'
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.17.22)
sacchrotriyāste'nūcānā dīkṣitāḥsomayājinaḥ | iti rūḍhimiha prāptāstava pūrvapitāmahāḥ
'Your forefathers here attained the repute of true and learned Shrotriyas — reciters of the Veda, consecrated priests, offerers of the Soma sacrifice.'
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.17.23)
tyaktvā durvṛttasaṁsargaṁ sādhusaṅgarato bhava | sadvidyāsu mano dhehi brāhmaṇācāramācara
'Abandon the company of the wicked, be devoted to the company of the good; fix your mind on good learning, and practice the conduct befitting a brahmin.'
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.17.24)
'You resemble your father in form, in fame, and in the character of your lineage. Why then are you not ashamed before us? Give up your own wickedness.'
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.17.25)
ūnaviṁśatiko'si tvameṣā ṣoḍaśavārṣikī | etāṁ saṁvṛṇu sadvṛttāṁ pitṛbhaktiyuto bhava
'You are now nineteen years of age, and she is sixteen. Take her to yourself with good conduct, and become devoted to your father.'
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.17.26)
śvaśuro'pi hi te mānyaḥ sarvatra guṇaśīlataḥ | tato na trapase kiṁ naḥ tyaja durvṛttatāṁ suta
'Your father-in-law too is honored everywhere for his virtue and character. Why then are you not ashamed before us, my son? Give up your wickedness.'
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.17.27)
mātulāste'tulāḥ putra vidyāśīlakulādibhiḥ | tebhyo'pi na bibheṣi tvaṁ śuddho'syubhayavaṁśataḥ
'Your maternal uncles, my son, are unrivaled in learning, character, and lineage — yet you fear not even them, though you are pure by both your paternal and maternal lines.'
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.17.28)
paśyaitānprativeśmasthānbrāhmaṇānāṁ kumārakān | gṛhe'pi śiṣyānpaśyaitānpituste vinayocitān
'Look at these sons of brahmins living in the neighboring houses; look too at these disciples in your own home, so well-disciplined toward your father.'
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.17.29)
rājāpi śroṣyati yadā tava duśceṣṭitaṁ suta | śraddhāṁ vihāya te tāte vṛttilopaṁ kariṣyati
'When even the king comes to hear of your misconduct, my son, he will lose faith in your father and revoke his royal grant.'
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.17.30)
bālaceṣṭitamevaitad vadantyadyāpi te janāḥ | anantaraṁ hariṣyanti yuktāṁ dīkṣitatāmiha
'Even now people still dismiss this as mere childish mischief — but soon they will strip away this rightful office of the dikshita as well.'
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.17.31)
sarve'pyākṣārayiṣyanti tava tātaṁ ca māmapi | mātuścaritraṁ tanayo dhatte durbhāṣaṇairiti
'Everyone will reproach both your father and me, saying that a son bears his mother's very character in his foul speech.'
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.17.32)
'Your father is not sinful — he follows faithfully the path of shruti and smriti; my mind is devoted at his feet, and Maheshvara himself is witness to this.'
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.17.33)
na cartusnātayāpīha mukhaṁ duṣṭasya vīkṣitam | aho balīyānsa vidhiryena jāto bhavāniti
'Not even one freshly bathed should look upon the face of a wicked person — ah, how mighty is that fate, by which you were born as you are!'
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.17.34)
pratikṣaṇaṁ jananyeti śikṣyamāṇo'tidurmatiḥ | na tatyāja ca taddharmaṁ durbodho vyasanī yataḥ
Though thus instructed by his mother at every moment, that most foolish son would not abandon his evil conduct, for he was dull of understanding and given wholly to vice.
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.17.35)
mṛgayāmadyapaiśunyānṛtacauryadurodaraiḥ | sa vāradārairvyasanairebhiḥ ko'tra na khaṇḍitaḥ
Hunting, drinking, malicious gossip, falsehood, theft, gambling — and other men's wives besides: who indeed is not ruined by such vices?
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.17.36)
yadyanmadhyagṛhe paśyettattannītvā sudurmatiḥ | arpayed dyūtakārāṇāṁ sakupyaṁ vasanādikam
Whatever object he saw about the house, that thoroughly foolish youth would carry off and give to the gamblers — vessels, garments, and the like.
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.17.37)
nyastāṁ ratnamayīṁ gehe karasya piturūrmikām | corayitvaikadādāya durodarakare'rpayat
Once he stole a jeweled ring belonging to his father that lay kept in the house, and gave it into the hand of a gambler.
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.17.38)
dīkṣitena parijñāto daivād dyūtakṛtaḥ kare | uvāca dīkṣitastaṁ ca kuto labdhā tvayormikā
By fate, that gambler was caught with the ring still in hand, and the dikshita, recognizing it, said to him, 'Where did you get this ring?'
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.17.39)
pṛṣṭastenātha nirbandhādasakṛttamuvāca saḥ | māmākṣipasi viproccaiḥ kiṁ mayā cauryakarmaṇā
Pressed again and again with questions, he said, 'O brahmin, why do you accuse me so loudly of a theft I did not commit?'
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.17.40)
labdhā mudrā tvadīyena putreṇaiva samarpitā | mama māturhi pūrvedyurjitvā nīto hi śāṭakaḥ
'This ring was given to me by your very own son. And even my mother's garment — he won it and carried it off just yesterday.'
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.17.41)
na kevalaṁ mamaivaitadaṅgulīyaṁ samarpitam | anyeṣāṁ dyūtakartṝṇāṁ bhūri tenārpitaṁ vasu
'This ring was not given to me alone — he has given much wealth to other gamblers besides.'
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.17.42)
ratnakupyadukūlāni bhṛṅgāraprabhṛtīni ca | bhājanāni vicitrāṇi kāṁsyatāmramayāni ca
'Jewels, fine cloth, silks, ewers and the like, and vessels of many kinds made of bronze and copper —'
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.17.43)
nagnīkṛtya pratidinaṁ badhyate dyūtakāribhiḥ | na tena sadṛśaḥ kaścidākṣiko bhūmimaṇḍale
'Stripped bare by the gamblers day after day, he is bound to their game — there is no gambler on this whole earth to equal him.'
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.17.44)
adyāvadhi tvayā vipra durodaraśiromaṇiḥ | kathaṁ nājñāyi tanayo'vinayānayakovidaḥ
'How is it, O brahmin, that until today you did not recognize your own son as the very crown-jewel of gamblers, so skilled in impropriety and misconduct?'
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.17.45)
iti śrutvā trapābhāravinamratarakandharaḥ | prāvṛtya vāsasā mauliṁ prāviśannijamandiram
Hearing this, his neck bowed low under the weight of shame, he covered his head with his own cloth and entered his house.
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.17.46)
mahāpativratāmasya patnīṁ provāca tāmatha | sa dīkṣito yajñadattaḥ śrautakarmaparāyaṇaḥ
Then that dikshita Yajnadatta, devoted to Vedic ritual, spoke to his greatly chaste and devoted wife —
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.17.47)
yajñadatta uvāca | dīkṣitāyani kutrāsti dhūrto guṇanidhiḥ sutaḥ | atha tiṣṭhatu kiṁ tena kva sā mama śubhormikā
Yajnadatta said: 'O wife of the dikshita, where is that rogue, our son Gunanidhi? Let him be, what is he to me now — but where is my auspicious ring?'
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.17.48)
aṅgodvartanakāle yā tvayā me'ṅgulito hṛtā | sā tvaṁ ratnamayīṁ śīghraṁ tāmānīya prayaccha me
'That jeweled ring which you took from my finger at the time of my anointing — bring it here quickly and give it to me.'
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.17.49)
iti śrutvātha tadvākyaṁ bhītā sā dīkṣitāyanī | provāca snānamadhyāhnīṁ kriyāṁ niṣpādayantyatha
Hearing this, the dikshita's wife grew afraid, and even as she performed her midday bathing rite, she said —
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.17.50)
vyagrāsmi devapūjārthamupahārādikarmaṇi | samayo'yamatikrāmedatithīnāṁ priyātithe
'O dear one, I am occupied with the worship of the gods and with preparing the offerings — the hour appointed for our guests is passing.'
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.17.51)
idānīmeva pakvānnakaraṇavyagrayā mayā | sthāpitā bhājane kvāpi vismṛteti na vedmyaham
'Just now, being busy preparing the cooked food, I put it away in some vessel or other — I have forgotten; I do not know where it is.'
Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.17.52)
dīkṣita uvāca | haṁ he'satputrajanani nityaṁ satyaprabhāṣiṇi | yadā yadā tvāṁ sampṛcche tanayaḥ kva gatastviti
The dikshita said: 'Ah — mother of a wicked son, ever speaking the truth! Whenever I ask where our son has gone,'
Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.17.53)
tadā tadeti tvaṁ brūyānnāthedānīṁ sa nirgataḥ | adhītyādhyayanārthaṁ ca dvitrairmitraiḥ sayugbahiḥ
'then you say, O lord, he has just now gone out with two or three friends for the sake of study.'
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.17.54)
kutaste śāṭakaḥ patni māñjiṣṭho yo mayārpitaḥ | lambate yo'niśaṁ dhāmni tathyaṁ brūhi bhayaṁ tyaja
'O wife, where is that madder-red cloth I gave you? The one that always used to hang in the house — where has it gone? Speak the truth, cast off your fear.'
Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.17.55)
sāmprataṁ nekṣyate so'pi bhṛṅgāro maṇimaṇḍitaḥ | paṭṭasūtramayī sāpi tripaṭī yā mayārpitā
'That jeweled pitcher too is now nowhere to be seen, nor that fine three-layered silken cloth I gave you.'
Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.17.56)
kva dākṣiṇātyaṁ tatkāṁsyaṁ gauḍī tāmraghaṭī kva sā | nāgadantamayī sā kva sukhakautukamañcikā
'Where is that southern bronze vessel? Where is that Gauda-made copper pot? Where is that ivory-inlaid couch of ease?'
Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.17.57)
kva sā parvatadeśīyā candrakāntirivādbhutā | dīpakavyagrahastāgrālaṅkṛtā śālabhañjikā
'Where is that wondrous carved figurine from the mountain-country, radiant as moonlight, its fingertips adorned as it held a lamp?'
Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.17.58)
kiṁ bahūktena kulaje tubhyaṁ kupyāmyahaṁ vṛthā | tadābhyavahariṣye'hamupayaṁsyāmyahaṁ yadā
'O well-born one, what use in saying more? I am angered with you in vain — but when shall I eat, and when perform my daily rites?'
Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.17.59)
anapatyo'smi tenāhaṁ duṣṭena kuladūṣiṇā | uttiṣṭhānaya pāthastvaṁ tasmai dadyāṁ tilāñjalim
'Because of that wicked son, that defiler of our family, I am as good as childless. Rise, bring water, that I may offer him the tilanjali of renunciation.'
Verse 60 (shiva.rudra.17.60)
aputratvaṁ varaṁ nṛṇāṁ kuputrātkulapāṁsanāt | tyajedekaṁ kulasyārthe nītireṣā sanātanī
Childlessness is better for men than a wicked son who defiles the family; even an only son should be renounced for the sake of the family's honor — this is the eternal law.
Verse 61 (shiva.rudra.17.61)
snātvā nityavidhiṁ kṛtvā tasminnevāhni kasyacit | śrotriyasya sutāṁ prāpya pāṇiṁ jagrāha dīkṣitaḥ
Having bathed and performed his daily rites, that very day the dikshita obtained the daughter of a certain learned brahmin, and took her hand in marriage.
