Rudra Samhita · Chapter 16
Creation, in the Dialogue of Brahma and Narada
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.16.1)
brahmovāca | śabdādīni ca bhūtāni pañcīkṛtvāhamātmanā | tebhyaḥ sthūlaṁ nabho vāyuṁ vahniṁ caiva jalaṁ mahīm
Brahma said: Having myself compounded the elements — sound and the rest — through quintuplication, I created from them the gross ether, air, fire, water, and earth.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.16.2)
parvatāṁśca samudrāṁśca vṛkṣādīnapi nārada | kalādiyugaparyantānkālānanyānavāsṛjam
O Narada, and mountains and oceans, and trees and the rest, and I created the divisions of time, from the kala up to the yugas, and other measures.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.16.3)
sṛṣṭyantānaparāṁścāpi nāhaṁ tuṣṭo'bhavaṁ mune | tato dhyātvā śivaṁ sāmbaṁ sādhakānasṛjaṁ mune
O sage, and others down to the end of creation — yet I was not satisfied; then, meditating upon Shiva together with Amba, O sage, I created those who would truly accomplish my purpose.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.16.4)
marīciṁ ca svanetrābhyāṁ hṛdayād bhṛgumeva ca | śiraso'ṅgirasaṁ vyānātpulahaṁ munisattamam
Marichi from my own eyes, and Bhrigu from my heart; Angiras from my head, and Pulaha, best of sages, from my vyana breath —
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.16.5)
udānācca pulastyaṁ hi vasiṣṭhaṁ ca samānataḥ | kratuṁ tvapānācchrotrābhyāmatriṁ dakṣaṁ ca prāṇataḥ
Pulastya from my udana, and Vasishtha from my samana; Kratu from my apana, Atri from my ears, and Daksha from my prana.
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.16.6)
asṛjaṁ tvāṁ tadotsaṅgācchāyāyāḥ kardamaṁ munim | saṅkalpādasṛjaṁ dharmaṁ sarvasādhanasādhanam
I created you from my lap; and from Chhaya, the sage Kardama; and from my will, I created Dharma, the very means of accomplishing every end.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.16.7)
evametānahaṁ sṛṣṭvā kṛtārthaḥ sādhakottamān | abhavaṁ muniśārdūla mahādevaprasādataḥ
O tiger among sages, having thus created these excellent accomplishers, I became one whose purpose was fulfilled, through the grace of Mahadeva.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.16.8)
tato madājñayā tāta dharmaḥ saṅkalpasambhavaḥ | mānavaṁ rūpamāpannaḥ sādhakaistu pravartitaḥ
Then, O son, by my command, Dharma, born from my will, assumed a human form, and was set in motion, together with his accomplishers.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.16.9)
tato'sṛjaṁ svagātrebhyo vividhebhyo'mitānsutān | surāsurādikāṁstebhyo dattvā tāṁ tāṁ tanuṁ mune
Then I created, from my various limbs, countless sons — gods, demons, and the rest — O sage, giving to each of them their respective body.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.16.10)
tato'haṁ śaṅkareṇātha prerito'ntargatena ha | dvidhā kṛtvātmano dehaṁ dvirūpaścābhavaṁ mune
Then I, impelled by Shankara who dwelt within me, dividing my own body into two, became of twofold form, O sage.
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.16.11)
ardhena nārī puruṣaścārdhena santato mune | sa tasyāmasṛjad dvandvaṁ sarvasādhanamuttamam
O sage, by one half becoming woman and continuing as man by the other, that dual form created within her the pair, the supreme means of all accomplishment.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.16.12)
svāyambhuvo manustatra puruṣaḥ parasādhanam | śatarūpābhidhā nārī yoginī sā tapasvinī
The man there was Svayambhuva Manu, the supreme means; the woman, named Shatarupa, was a yogini, an ascetic.
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.16.13)
sā punarmanunā tena gṛhītātīva śobhanā | vivāhavidhinā tātāsṛjatsargaṁ samaithunam
She, exceedingly beautiful, was then taken in marriage by that Manu; O son, through the rite of marriage, they brought forth creation through union.
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.16.14)
tasyāṁ tena samutpannastanayaśca priyavrataḥ | tathaivottānapādaśca tathā kanyātrayaṁ punaḥ
By him, upon her, was born the son Priyavrata, and likewise Uttanapada, and again a set of three daughters.
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.16.15)
ākūtirdevahūtiśca prasūtiriti viśrutāḥ | ākūtiṁ rucaye prādātkardamāya tu madhyamām
Akuti, Devahuti, and Prasuti — thus were they renowned; Akuti he gave to Ruchi, and the middle one to Kardama.
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.16.16)
dadau prasūtiṁ dakṣāyottānapādānujāṁ sutām | tāsāṁ prasūtiprasavaiḥ sarvaṁ vyāptaṁ carācaram
He gave Prasuti, the younger daughter, to Daksha; by the offspring born from these daughters, the entire moving and unmoving world was pervaded.
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.16.17)
ākūtyāṁ ca ruceścābhūd dvandvaṁ yajñaśca dakṣiṇā | yajñasya jajñire putrā dakṣiṇāyāṁ ca dvādaśa
From Ruchi upon Akuti was born a pair, Yajna and Dakshina; from Yajna, upon Dakshina, twelve sons were born.
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.16.18)
devahūtyāṁ kardamācca bahvyo jātāḥ sutā mune | dakṣājjātāścatasraśca tathā putryaśca viṁśatiḥ
O sage, from Kardama, upon Devahuti, many daughters were born; and from Daksha, four sons, and likewise twenty daughters.
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.16.19)
dharmāya dattā dakṣeṇa śraddhādyāstu trayodaśa | śṛṇu tāsāṁ ca nāmāni dharmastrīṇāṁ munīśvara
Thirteen daughters, beginning with Shraddha, were given by Daksha to Dharma; O lord of sages, hear the names of these wives of Dharma.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.16.20)
śraddhā lakṣmīrdhṛtistuṣṭiḥ puṣṭirmedhā tathā kriyā | buddhirlajjā vasuḥ śāntiḥ siddhiḥ kīrtistrayodaśa
Shraddha, Lakshmi, Dhriti, Tushti, Pushti, Medha, and Kriya; Buddhi, Lajja, Vasu, Shanti, Siddhi, and Kirti — these thirteen.
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.16.21)
tābhyāṁ śiṣṭā yavīyasya ekādaśa sulocanāḥ | khyātiḥ satpathasambhūtiḥ smṛtiḥ prītiḥ kṣamā tathā
Besides these, eleven younger, lovely-eyed daughters remained: Khyati, Sambhuti born of the true path, Smriti, Priti, Kshama, and —
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.16.22)
sannatiścānurūpā ca ūrjā svāhā svadhā tathā | bhṛgurbhavo marīciśca tathā caivāṅgirā muniḥ
— Sannati, Anurupa, Urja, Svaha, and likewise Svadha; given respectively to Bhrigu, Bhava, Marichi, and the sage Angiras —
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.16.23)
pulastyaḥ pulahaścaiva kratuścarṣivarastathā | atrirvasiṣṭho vahniśca pitaraśca yathākramam
— to Pulastya, and Pulaha, and Kratu, best of sages, and likewise to Atri, Vasishtha, Vahni, and the Pitris, in due order.
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.16.24)
khyātāstā jagṛhuḥ kanyā bhṛgvādyāḥ sādhakā varāḥ | tataḥsampūritaṁ sarvaṁ trailokyaṁ sacarācaram
Those excellent accomplishers, Bhrigu and the others, took these renowned maidens in marriage; thereby all the three worlds, with their beings, were filled.
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.16.25)
evaṁ karmānurūpeṇa prāṇināmambikāpateḥ | ājñayā bahavo jātā asaṅkhyātā dvijarṣabhāḥ
Thus, O foremost of the twice-born, according to the karma of living beings, and by the command of the Lord of Ambika, many countless beings came into existence.
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.16.26)
kalpabhedena dakṣasya ṣaṣṭiḥ kanyāḥ prakīrtitāḥ | tāsāṁ daśa ca dharmāya śaśine saptaviṁśatim
According to the difference of kalpas, sixty daughters of Daksha are proclaimed; ten of them to Dharma, and twenty-seven to the Moon —
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.16.27)
vidhinā dattavāndakṣaḥ kaśyapāya trayodaśa | catasraḥ pararūpāya dadau tārkṣyāya nārada
— Daksha gave, according to rule, thirteen to Kashyapa; and, O Narada, four to Tarkshya, the giver of other forms.
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.16.28)
bhṛgvaṅgiraḥ kṛśāśvebhyo dve dve kanye ca dattavān | tābhyastebhyastu sañjātā bahvī sṛṣṭiścarācarā
To Bhrigu, Angiras, and Krishashva, he gave two daughters each; from these, born to them, arose an abundant creation, moving and unmoving.
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.16.29)
trayodaśamitāstasmai kaśyapāya mahātmane | dattā dakṣeṇa yāḥ kanyā vidhivanmunisattama
O best of sages, those thirteen daughters given by Daksha, according to rule, to that great soul Kashyapa —
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.16.30)
tāsāṁ prasūtibhirvyāptaṁ trailokyaṁ sacarācaram | sthāvaraṁ jaṅgamaṁ caiva śūnyaṁ naiva tu kiñcana
— by the offspring of these, the three worlds, moving and unmoving, immobile and mobile, were pervaded; nothing at all remained empty.
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.16.31)
devāśca ṛṣayaścaiva daityāścaiva prajajñire | vṛkṣāśca pakṣiṇaścaiva sarve parvatavīrudhaḥ
Gods, and sages, and daityas were born; and trees, and birds, and all the mountains and creepers.
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.16.32)
dakṣakanyāprasūtaiśca vyāptamevaṁ carācaram | pātālatalamārabhya satyalokāvadhi dhruvam
By the offspring of Daksha's daughters, the entire moving and unmoving world was thus surely pervaded, from the depths of Patala up to Satyaloka.
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.16.33)
brahmāṇḍaṁ sakalaṁ vyāptaṁ śūnyaṁ naiva kadācana | evaṁ sṛṣṭiḥ kṛtā samyagbrahmaṇā śambhuśāsanāt
The entire cosmic egg was pervaded, never empty at any point; thus was creation duly accomplished by Brahma, through the command of Shambhu.
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.16.34)
satī nāma triśūlāgre sadā rudreṇa rakṣitā | tapo'rthaṁ nirmitā pūrvaṁ śambhunā sarvaviṣṇunā
She named Sati, ever protected by Rudra upon the tip of his trident, was fashioned before by Shambhu, who is all and is Vishnu himself, for the sake of austerity.
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.16.35)
saiva dakṣātsamudbhūtā lokakāryārthameva ca | līlāṁ cakāra bahuśo bhaktoddharaṇahetave
That very one arose from Daksha, for the sake of the affairs of the world, and performed her play many times, for the sake of delivering her devotees.
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.16.36)
vāmāṅgo yasya vaikuṇṭho dakṣiṇāṅgo'hameva ca | rudro hṛdayajo yasya trividhastu śivaḥ smṛtaḥ
He whose left side is Vaikuntha, and whose right side is I myself, and whose heart gives birth to Rudra — that Shiva is remembered as threefold.
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.16.37)
ahaṁ viṣṇuśca rudraśca guṇāstraya udāhṛtāḥ | svayaṁ sadā nirguṇaśca parabrahmāvyayaḥ śivaḥ
I, Vishnu, and Rudra are declared to be the three gunas; while Shiva himself is ever without qualities, the imperishable Supreme Brahman.
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.16.38)
viṣṇuḥ sattvaṁ rajo'haṁ ca tamo rudra udāhṛtaḥ | lokācārata ityevaṁ nāmato vastuto'nyathā
Vishnu is sattva, I am rajas, and Rudra is declared to be tamas; this is so only by worldly convention, in name — in reality it is otherwise.
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.16.39)
antastamo bahiḥ sattvo viṣṇū rudrastathā mataḥ | antaḥ sattvastamo bāhyo rajo'haṁ sarvathā mune
Vishnu and Rudra are held to be tamas within and sattva without; while I, O sage, am in every way rajas, sattva within and tamas without —
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.16.40)
rājasī ca surā devī sattvarūpā tu sā satī | lakṣmīstamomayī jñeyā trirūpā ca śivā parā
The rajasic goddess is Sura (Vagdevi); and that Sati is of sattvic form; Lakshmi should be known as consisting of tamas — thus the supreme Shiva-shakti is threefold.
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.16.41)
evaṁ śivā satī bhūtvā śaṅkareṇa vivāhitā | pituryajñe tanuṁ tyaktvā nādarāt svapadaṁ yayau
Thus Shiva's own shakti, having become Sati, was married to Shankara; but, abandoning her body at her father's sacrifice out of the sense of dishonor, she returned to her own state.
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.16.42)
punaśca pārvatī jātā devaprārthanayā śivā | tapaḥ kṛtvā suvipulaṁ punaḥ śivamupāgatā
Again, at the prayer of the gods, that same Shiva-shakti was born as Parvati; having performed most extensive austerity, she attained Shiva once more.
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.16.43)
tasya nāmānyanekāni jātāni ca munīśvara | kālikā caṇḍikā bhadrā cāmuṇḍā vijayā jayā
O lord of sages, many names of hers came into being: Kalika, Chandika, Bhadra, Chamunda, Vijaya, Jaya —
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.16.44)
jayantī bhadrakālī ca durgā bhagavatīti ca | kāmākhyā kāmadā hyambā mṛḍānī sarvamaṅgalā
— Jayanti, Bhadrakali, Durga, and Bhagavati; Kamakhya, Kamada, Amba, Mridani, and Sarvamangala.
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.16.45)
nāmadheyānyanekāni bhuktimuktipradāni ca | guṇakarmānurūpāṇi prāyaśastatra pārvatī
Many such names, bestowing both enjoyment and liberation, corresponding to her qualities and deeds — for the most part, she there is Parvati.
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.16.46)
guṇamayyastathā devyo devā guṇamayāstrayaḥ | militvā vividhaṁ sṛṣṭeścakruste kāryamuttamam
Thus the goddesses, made of the gunas, and the three gods, made of the gunas, joining together, performed the supreme work of manifold creation.
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.16.47)
evaṁ sṛṣṭiprakāraste varṇito munisattama | śivājñayā viracito brahmāṇḍasya mayākhilaḥ
Thus, O best of sages, has this manner of creation been described to you; the entire cosmic egg was fashioned by me, by the command of Shiva.
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.16.48)
paraṁ brahma śivaḥ proktastasya rūpāstrayaḥ surāḥ | ahaṁ viṣṇuśca rudraśca guṇabhedānurūpataḥ
Shiva is declared to be the Supreme Brahman; his three forms are the three gods — I, Vishnu, and Rudra — according to the distinction of the gunas.
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.16.49)
śivayā ramate svairaṁ śivaloke manorame | svatantraḥ paramātmā hi nirguṇaḥ saguṇo'pi vai
The independent Supreme Self, though without qualities, yet also possessed of qualities, sports freely with Shiva-shakti in the enchanting world of Shiva.
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.16.50)
tasya pūrṇāvatāro hi rudraḥ sākṣācchivaḥ smṛtaḥ | kailāse bhavanaṁ ramyaṁ pañcavaktraścakāra ha | brahmāṇḍasya tathā nāśe tasya nāśo'sti vai na hi
Rudra is indeed remembered as his full incarnation, directly Shiva himself; the five-faced one made his beautiful abode on Kailasa; and even at the destruction of the cosmic egg, there is truly no destruction of that abode.
