Rudra Samhita · Chapter 15

The Manifestation of Rudra's Incarnation

Chapter 14All chaptersChapter 16

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.15.1)

nārada uvāca | vidhe vidhe mahābhāga dhanyastvaṁ surasattama | śrāvitādyādbhutā śaivakathā paramapāvanī

Narada said: O Vidhi, Vidhi, greatly fortunate one, best of gods, blessed are you! You have made me hear this wondrous, supremely purifying Shaiva narrative.

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.15.2)

tatrādbhutā mahādivyā liṅgotpattiḥ śrutā śubhā | śrutvā yasyāḥ prabhāvaṁ ca duḥkhanāśo bhavediha

In it we have heard the wondrous, most divine, auspicious origin of the linga, hearing whose glory alone sorrow is destroyed in this world.

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.15.3)

anantaraṁ ca yajjātaṁ māhātmyaṁ caritaṁ tathā | sṛṣṭeścaiva prakāraṁ ca kathaya tvaṁ viśeṣataḥ

Now tell me especially what happened afterward — the glory, the deeds, and likewise the manner of creation.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.15.4)

brahmovāca | samyak pṛṣṭaṁ ca bhavatā yajjātaṁ tadanantaram | kathayiṣyāmi saṅkṣepādyathā pūrvaṁ śrutaṁ mayā

Brahma said: Well have you asked what happened next; I shall tell it in brief, just as I heard it before.

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.15.5)

antarhite tadā deve śivarūpe sanātane | ahaṁ viṣṇuśca viprendra adhikaṁ sukhamāptavān

O foremost of Brahmins, when the eternal god in the form of Shiva had disappeared, I and Vishnu attained great happiness.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.15.6)

mayā ca viṣṇunā rūpaṁ haṁsavārāhayostadā | saṁvṛtaṁ tu tatastābhyāṁ lokasargāvanecchayā

Then, by me and by Vishnu, the forms of the Swan and the Boar were assumed, out of the desire for the creation and protection of the worlds.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.15.7)

nārada uvāca | vidhe brahman mahāprājña saṁśayo hṛdi me mahān | kṛpāṁ kṛtvātulāṁ śīghraṁ taṁ nāśayitumarhasi

Narada said: O Vidhi, O Brahma of great wisdom, a great doubt is in my heart; showing incomparable grace, you should quickly dispel it.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.15.8)

haṁsavārāhayo rūpaṁ yuvābhyāṁ ca dhṛtaṁ katham | anyadrūpaṁ vihāyaiva kimatra vada kāraṇam

How were the forms of the Swan and the Boar assumed by you two, forsaking every other form? Tell me the reason for this.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.15.9)

sūta uvāca | ityetadvacanaṁ śrutvā nāradasya mahātmanaḥ | smṛtvā śivapadāmbhojaṁ brahmā sādaramabravīt

Suta said: Hearing these words of the great soul Narada, Brahma, remembering the lotus feet of Shiva, spoke with respect.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.15.10)

brahmovāca | haṁsasya cordhvagamane gatirbhavati niścalā | tattvātattvaviveko'sti jaladugdhavibhāgavat

Brahma said: In its upward flight, the swan's movement is unwavering; there is discernment between the real and the unreal, as in the separation of water from milk.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.15.11)

ajñānajñānayostattvaṁ vivecayati haṁsakaḥ | haṁsarūpaṁ dhṛtaṁ tena brahmaṇā sṛṣṭikāriṇā

The swan discerns the truth between ignorance and knowledge; therefore that form of the swan was assumed by Brahma, the maker of creation.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.15.12)

viveko naiva labdhaśca yato haṁso vyalīyata | śivasvarūpatattvasya jyotirūpasya nārada

Yet, O Narada, that discernment was not attained, for the swan dissolved away, unable to grasp the truth of the very nature of Shiva, of the form of light.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.15.13)

sṛṣṭipravṛttikāmasya kathaṁ jñānaṁ prajāyate | yato labdho viveko'pi na mayā haṁsarūpiṇā

How does knowledge arise for one intent upon undertaking creation? For even discernment was not attained by me in the form of the swan.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.15.14)

gamane'dho varāhasya gatirbhavati niścalā | dhṛtaṁ vārāharūpaṁ hi viṣṇunā vanacāriṇā

In its downward movement, the boar's motion is unwavering; therefore the form of the boar, the forest-wanderer, was assumed by Vishnu.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.15.15)

athavā bhavakalpārthaṁ tadrūpaṁ hi prakalpitam | viṣṇunā ca varāhasya bhuvanāvanakāriṇā

Or else, that form of the boar was fashioned by Vishnu, the protector of the earth, for the sake of establishing that particular kalpa.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.15.16)

yaddinaṁ hi samārabhya tadrūpaṁ dhṛtavānhariḥ | taddinaṁ pratikalpo'sau kalpo vārāhasaṁjñakaḥ

From the very day on which Hari assumed that form, that day marks the start of this particular kalpa, the one called the Varaha Kalpa.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.15.17)

tadicchā vā yadā jātā tasya rūpasya dhāraṇe | taddinaṁ pratikalpo'sau kalpo vārāhasaṁjñakaḥ

Or, when the desire for the assumption of that form arose in him, that day too marks this particular kalpa, called the Varaha Kalpa.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.15.18)

iti praśnottaraṁ dattaṁ prastutaṁ śṛṇu nārada | smṛtvā śivapadāmbhojaṁ vakṣye sṛṣṭividhiṁ mune

Thus has this question been answered; now, O Narada, hear what follows. Remembering the lotus feet of Shiva, I shall tell, O sage, the manner of creation.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.15.19)

antarhite mahādeve tvahaṁ lokapitāmahaḥ | tadīyaṁ vacanaṁ kartumadhyāyandhyānatatparaḥ

When Mahadeva had disappeared, I, the grandfather of the worlds, being intent on meditation, pondered how to carry out his word.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.15.20)

namaskṛtya tadā śambhuṁ jñānaṁ prāpya harestadā | ānandaṁ paramaṁ gatvā sṛṣṭiṁ kartuṁ mano dadhe

Then, having bowed to Shambhu, and having obtained knowledge from Hari, and having attained supreme bliss, I set my mind upon performing creation.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.15.21)

viṣṇuścāpi tadā tatra praṇipatya sadāśivam | upadiśya ca māṁ tāta hyantardhānamupāgataḥ

And Vishnu too, O son, having bowed there to Sadashiva, and having instructed me, then vanished from sight.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.15.22)

brahmāṇḍācca bahirgatvā prāpya śambhoranugraham | vaikuṇṭhanagaraṁ gatvā tatrovāsa hariḥ sadā

Going outside the cosmic egg, and having obtained the grace of Shambhu, Hari went to the city of Vaikuntha, and dwelt there ever after.

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.15.23)

ahaṁ smṛtvā śivaṁ tatra viṣṇuṁ vai sṛṣṭikāmyayā | pūrvaṁ sṛṣṭaṁ jalaṁ yacca tatrāñjalimudākṣipam

I, remembering Shiva there, and also Vishnu, out of desire for creation, cast a handful of that water which had been created before.

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.15.24)

ato'ṇḍamabhavattatra caturviṁśatisaṁjñakam | virāḍrūpamabhūdvipra jalarūpamapaśyataḥ

From that, O Brahmin, an egg came into being there, called the "Twenty-Four"; the form of the Virat came into being, its watery form no longer visible.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.15.25)

tataḥ saṁśayamāpannastapastepe sudāruṇam | dvādaśābdamahaṁ tatra viṣṇudhyānaparāyaṇaḥ

Then, falling into doubt, I performed most severe austerity there for twelve years, intent upon meditation on Vishnu.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.15.26)

tasmiṁśca samaye tāta prādurbhūto hariḥ svayam | māmuvāca mahāprītyā madaṅgaṁ saṁspṛśanmudā

And at that time, O son, Hari himself appeared, and spoke to me with great affection, joyfully touching my limbs.

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.15.27)

viṣṇuruvāca | varaṁ brūhi prasanno'smi nādeyo vidyate tava | brahman śambhuprasādena sarvaṁ dātuṁ samarthakaḥ

Vishnu said: "Ask a boon; I am pleased. There is nothing that cannot be given to you; O Brahma, by the grace of Shambhu, I am capable of giving everything."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.15.28)

brahmovāca | yuktametanmahābhāga datto'haṁ śambhunā ca te | taduktaṁ yācate me'dya dehi viṣṇo namo'stu te

Brahma said: "This is fitting, O greatly fortunate one; for it was Shambhu who entrusted me to you. What I now ask of you today, please give — O Vishnu, salutation to you."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.15.29)

virāḍrūpamidaṁ hyaṇḍaṁ caturviṁśatisaṁjñakam | na caitanyaṁ bhavatyādau jaḍībhūtaṁ pradṛśyate

"This egg, of Virat form, called the Twenty-Four, has as yet no consciousness at its very start; it appears inert."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.15.30)

prādurbhūto bhavānadya śivānugrahato hare | prāptaṁ śaṅkarasambhūtyā hyaṇḍaṁ caitanyamāvaha

"You have appeared today, O Hari, through the grace of Shiva; grant consciousness to this egg, obtained through Shankara's own manifestation."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.15.31)

ityukte ca mahāviṣṇuḥ śambhorājñāparāyaṇaḥ | anantarūpamāsthāya praviveśa tadaṇḍakam

When this was said, the great Vishnu, intent on the command of Shambhu, assuming an infinite form, entered into that egg.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.15.32)

sahasraśīrṣā puruṣaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ sahasrapāt | sa bhūmiṁ sarvataḥ spṛttvā tadaṇḍaṁ vyāptavāniti

As the Purusha with a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, and a thousand feet, touching the earth on every side, he pervaded that egg entirely.

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.15.33)

praviṣṭe viṣṇunā tasminnaṇḍe samyakstutena me | sacetanamabhūdaṇḍaṁ caturviṁśatisaṁjñakam

When Vishnu, duly praised by me, had entered into that egg, the egg called the Twenty-Four became endowed with consciousness.

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.15.34)

pātālādisamārabhya satyalokādhipaḥ svayam | rājate sma haristatra vairājaḥ puruṣaḥ prabhuḥ

Beginning from the netherworlds up to Satyaloka, Hari himself, the Lord, the Virat Purusha, shone forth there as sovereign.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.15.35)

kailāsanagaraṁ ramyaṁ sarvoparivirājitam | nivāsārthaṁ nijasyaiva pañcavaktraścakāra ha

The five-faced one made the beautiful city of Kailasa, shining above everything, for his own dwelling.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.15.36)

brahmāṇḍasya tathā nāśe vaikuṇṭhasya ca tasya ca | kadācideva devarṣe nāśo nāsti tayoriha

O divine sage, even at the dissolution of the cosmic egg, there is never any destruction of Vaikuntha and of Kailasa — the two of them never perish here.

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.15.37)

satyaṁ padamupāśritya sthito'haṁ munisattama | sṛṣṭikāmo'bhavaṁ tāta mahādevājñayā hyaham

O best of sages, taking refuge in the abode of Satyaloka, I remained there; O son, I became desirous of creation, by the command of Mahadeva.

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.15.38)

sisṛkṣoratha me prādurabhavatpāpasargakaḥ | avidyāpañcakastāta buddhipūrvastamopamaḥ

Then, O son, as I desired to create, there arose from me the sinful creation — the fivefold ignorance, preceded by intellect, resembling darkness.

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.15.39)

tataḥ prasannacitto'hamasṛjaṁ sthāvarābhidham | mukhyasargaṁ ca niḥsaṅgamadhyāyaṁ śambhuśāsanāt

Then, my mind being cleared, meditating by the command of Shambhu, I created the attachment-free primary creation, called the immovable creation.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.15.40)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā me sisṛkṣośca jñātvā sādhakamātmanaḥ | sargo'vartata duḥkhāḍhyastiryaksrotā na sādhakaḥ

Seeing that, as I still desired to create, and considering it not fully accomplishing my purpose, the creation that arose next, full of sorrow and moving crosswise, was likewise not accomplishing my aim.

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.15.41)

taṁ cāsādhakamājñāya punaścintayataśca me | abhavatsāttvikaḥ sarga ūrdhvasrotā iti drutam

Recognizing that this too did not accomplish my aim, and as I pondered further, there swiftly arose the sattvic creation, called the upward-flowing creation.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.15.42)

devasargaḥ pratikhyātaḥ satyo'tīva sukhāvahaḥ | tamapyasādhakaṁ matvā'cintayaṁ prabhumātmanaḥ

This is renowned as the creation of the gods, true and bringing exceeding happiness; yet, considering that this too did not accomplish my aim, I meditated upon the Lord of my own self.

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.15.43)

prādurāsīttataḥ sargo rājasaḥ śaṅkarājñayā | arvāksrotā iti khyāto mānuṣaḥ parasādhakaḥ

Then, by the command of Shankara, there arose the rajasic creation, known as the downward-and-outward-flowing creation — the human creation, which does accomplish that higher purpose.

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.15.44)

mahādevājñayā sargastato bhūtādiko'bhavat | iti pañcavidhā sṛṣṭiḥ pravṛttā vai kṛtā mayā

Then, by the command of Mahadeva, the creation of the elements and the rest came about. Thus was the fivefold creation set in motion, performed by me.

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.15.45)

trayaḥ sargāḥ prakṛtyāśca brahmaṇaḥ parikīrtitāḥ | tatrādyo mahataḥ sargo dvitīyaḥ sūkṣmabhautikaḥ

Three creations of Brahma are proclaimed as arising from Prakriti; of these, the first is the creation of Mahat, the second is the creation of the subtle elements —

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.15.46)

vaikārikastṛtīyaśca ityete prākṛtāstrayaḥ | evaṁ cāṣṭavidhāḥ sargāḥ prākṛtairvaikṛtaiḥ saha

and the third is the vaikarika creation; these three are the creations from Prakriti. Thus, together with the derivative creations, there are eight kinds of creation.

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.15.47)

kaumāro navamaḥ proktaḥ prākṛto vaikṛtaśca saḥ | eṣāmavāntaro bhedo mayā vaktuṁ na śakyate

The ninth is declared to be the Kaumara creation, which is both from Prakriti and derivative. The finer distinctions among these I am not able to describe.

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.15.48)

alpatvādupayogasya vacmi sargaṁ dvijātmakam | kaumāraḥ sanakādīnāṁ yatra sargo mahānabhūt

Since their further usefulness is limited, I shall tell of the twofold creation: the Kaumara, wherein the great creation of Sanaka and the others came about.

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.15.49)

sanakādyāḥ sutā me hi mānasā brahmasammitāḥ | mahāvairāgyasampannā abhavanpañca suvratāḥ

Sanaka and the others, my mind-born sons, equal to Brahman himself, endowed with great dispassion, became five in number, of excellent vows.

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.15.50)

Though commanded by me, they, wise ones averse to worldly existence, their minds fixed solely on meditation upon Shiva, did not turn their thought toward creation.

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.15.51)

pratyuttaraṁ ca tairdattaṁ śrutvāhaṁ munisattama | akārṣaṁ krodhamatyugraṁ mohamāptaśca nārada

O best of sages, O Narada, hearing the reply given by them, I fell into most fierce anger, and was overcome by delusion.

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.15.52)

kruddhasya mohitasyātha vihvalasya mune mama | krodhena khalu netrābhyāṁ prāpatannaśrubindavaḥ ||

O sage, as I, angered, deluded, and overwhelmed, stood there, drops of tears indeed fell from my eyes because of that anger.

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.15.53)

tasminnavasare tatra smṛtena manasā mayā | prabodhito'haṁ tvaritamāgatena hi viṣṇunā

At that moment, there, Vishnu, remembered in my mind, came swiftly and roused me to my senses.

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.15.54)

tapaḥ kuru śivasyeti hariṇā śikṣito'pyaham | tapo'kārī mahad ghoraṁ paramaṁ munisattama

Instructed by Hari with the words, "Perform austerity to Shiva," I too, O best of sages, performed great and most terrible austerity.

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.15.55)

tapasyataśca sṛṣṭyarthaṁ bhruvorghrāṇasya madhyataḥ | avimuktābhidhāddeśātsvakīyānme viśeṣataḥ

And as I performed austerity for the sake of creation, from between my eyebrows and my nose — from my own particular region, called Avimukta —

Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.15.56)

trimūrtīnāṁ maheśasya prādurāsīd ghṛṇānidhiḥ | arddhanārīśvaro bhūtvā pūrṇāṁśaḥ sakaleśvaraḥ

there appeared the treasury of compassion of Mahesha, of the three forms, becoming Ardhanarishvara, a full portion of the Lord of all.

Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.15.57)

tamajaṁ śaṅkaraṁ sākṣāttejorāśimumāpatim | sarvajñaṁ sarvakartāraṁ nīlalohitasaṁjñakam

That unborn Shankara, directly a mass of splendor, Lord of Uma, all-knowing, the doer of all, called by the name Nilalohita —

Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.15.58)

dṛṣṭvā natvā mahābhaktyā stutvāhaṁ tu praharṣitaḥ | avocaṁ devadeveśaṁ sṛja tvaṁ vividhāḥ prajāḥ

seeing him, bowing to him, and praising him with great devotion, filled with joy, I said to the Lord of the gods of gods: "Create manifold beings."

Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.15.59)

śrutvā mama vacaḥ so'tha devadevo maheśvaraḥ | sasarja svātmanastulyān rudro rudragaṇānbahūna

Hearing my words, that God of gods, Maheshvara, Rudra, then created many hosts of Rudras, equal to himself.

Verse 60 (shiva.rudra.15.60)

avocaṁ punareveśaṁ mahārudraṁ maheśvaram | janmamṛtyubhayāviṣṭāḥ sṛja deva prajā iti

Again I said to the Lord, the great Rudra, Maheshvara: "O god, create beings subject to the fear of birth and death."

Verse 61 (shiva.rudra.15.61)

evaṁ śrutvā mahādevo madvacaḥ karuṇānidhiḥ | prahasyovāca māṁ sadyaḥ prahasya munisattama

O best of sages, hearing these words of mine, Mahadeva, the treasury of compassion, laughed, and at once, laughing, spoke to me.

Verse 62 (shiva.rudra.15.62)

mahādeva uvāca | janmamṛtyubhayāviṣṭā nāhaṁ srakṣye prajā vidhe | aśobhanāḥ karmavaśā nimagnā duḥkhavāridhau

Mahadeva said: "O Vidhi, I shall not create beings subject to the fear of birth and death — unfortunate ones, bound by their own actions, sunk in the ocean of sorrow."

Verse 63 (shiva.rudra.15.63)

ahaṁ duḥkhodadhau magnā uddhariṣyāmi ca prajāḥ | samyag jñānapradānena gurumūrtiparigrahaḥ

"I, by taking on the form of the guru, shall raise up those beings sunk in the ocean of sorrow, by the bestowal of true knowledge."

Verse 64 (shiva.rudra.15.64)

tvameva sṛja duḥkhāḍhyāḥ prajāḥ sarvāḥ prajāpate | madājñayā na baddhastvaṁ māyayā sambhaviṣyasi

"You yourself, O Prajapati, create all these sorrow-laden beings; by my command, though bound up with maya, you shall not yourself be bound."

Verse 65 (shiva.rudra.15.65)

brahmovāca | ityuktvā māṁ sa bhagavānsuśrīmānnīlalohitaḥ | sagaṇaḥ paśyato me hi drutamantardadhe haraḥ

Brahma said: Having spoken thus to me, that Blessed Lord, most glorious, Nilalohita, together with his hosts, swiftly vanished from sight, even as I looked on, that very Hara.
