The Birth of Andhaka and the Slaying of Hiranyanetra-Hiranyakashipu
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.181.1)
व्यास उवाच । सनत्कुमार सर्वज्ञ हते तस्मिन्सुरद्रुहि । किमकार्षीत्ततस्तस्य ज्येष्ठभ्राता महासुरः
vyāsa uvāca sanatkumāra sarvajña hate tasminsuradruhi kimakārṣīttatastasya jyeṣṭhabhrātā mahāsuraḥ
Vyasa said: "O all-knowing Sanatkumara, when that enemy of the gods was slain, what then did his elder brother, the great demon, do?"
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.181.2)
कुतूहलमिति श्रोतुं ममास्तीह मुनीश्वर । तच्छ्रावय कृपां कृत्वा ब्रह्मपुत्र नमोऽस्तु ते
kutūhalamiti śrotuṁ mamāstīha munīśvara tacchrāvaya kṛpāṁ kṛtvā brahmaputra namo'stu te
"O foremost of sages, I am eager to hear this — O son of Brahma, be gracious and tell it to me; I bow to you."
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.181.3)
ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य व्यासस्य स मुनीश्वरः । सनत्कुमारः प्रोवाच स्मृत्वा शिवपदाम्बुजम्
brahmovāca ityākarṇya vacastasya vyāsasya sa munīśvaraḥ sanatkumāraḥ provāca smṛtvā śivapadāmbujam
Brahma said: Hearing Vyasa's words, that foremost of sages, Sanatkumara, calling to mind Shiva's lotus feet, spoke thus.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.181.4)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । भ्रातर्येवं विनिहते हरिणा क्रोडमूर्तिना । हिरण्यकशिपुर्व्यास पर्यतप्यद्रुषा शुचा
sanatkumāra uvāca bhrātaryevaṁ vinihate hariṇā kroḍamūrtinā hiraṇyakaśipurvyāsa paryatapyadruṣā śucā
Sanatkumara said: "O Vyasa, when his brother was thus slain by Hari in the form of the boar, Hiranyakashipu was consumed with rage and grief."
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.181.5)
ततः प्रजानां कदनं विधातुं कदनप्रियान् । निर्दिदेशाऽसुरान्वीरान्हरिवैरप्रियो हि सः
tataḥ prajānāṁ kadanaṁ vidhātuṁ kadanapriyān nirdideśā'surānvīrānharivairapriyo hi saḥ
"Then that lord of demons, hating Hari, hostile to war, commanded his heroic demons, who delighted in oppressing the people, to torment the creatures of the world."
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.181.6)
अथ ते भर्तृसन्देशमादाय शिरसाऽसुराः । देवप्रजानां कदनं विदधुः कदनप्रियाः
atha te bhartṛsandeśamādāya śirasā'surāḥ devaprajānāṁ kadanaṁ vidadhuḥ kadanapriyāḥ
"Then those demons, delighting in destruction, took their lord's command upon their heads and set about destroying the creatures under the gods' protection."
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.181.7)
ततो विप्रकृते लोकेऽसुरैस्तैर्दुष्टमानसैः । दिवं देवाः परित्यज्य भुवि चेरुरलक्षिताः
tato viprakṛte loke'suraistairduṣṭamānasaiḥ divaṁ devāḥ parityajya bhuvi ceruralakṣitāḥ
"When those evil-minded demons thus afflicted the world, the gods abandoned heaven and wandered the earth unseen."
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.181.8)
हिरण्यकशिपुर्भ्रातुः सम्परेतस्य दुःखितः । कृत्वा करोदकादीनि तत्कलत्राद्यसान्त्वयत्
hiraṇyakaśipurbhrātuḥ samparetasya duḥkhitaḥ kṛtvā karodakādīni tatkalatrādyasāntvayat
"Hiranyakashipu, grieving for his dead brother, performed the water-offerings and other funeral rites for him, and consoled his brother's wife and household."
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.181.9)
ततःस दैत्यराजेन्द्रो ह्यजेयमजरामरम् । आत्मानमप्रतिद्वन्द्वमेकराज्यं व्यधित्सत
tataḥsa daityarājendro hyajeyamajarāmaram ātmānamapratidvandvamekarājyaṁ vyadhitsata
"Then that supreme lord of demons resolved to make himself unconquerable, ageless, immortal, without rival, and sole sovereign of all."
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.181.10)
स तेपे मन्दरद्रोण्यां तपः परमदारुणम् । ऊर्ध्वबाहुर्नभोदृष्टिः षादाङ्गुष्ठाश्रितावनिः
sa tepe mandaradroṇyāṁ tapaḥ paramadāruṇam ūrdhvabāhurnabhodṛṣṭiḥ ṣādāṅguṣṭhāśritāvaniḥ
"He undertook the most terrible austerity in the valley of Mandara — arms raised aloft, gaze fixed on the sky, the whole weight of his body resting on the tip of one great toe."
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.181.11)
तस्मिंस्तपस्तप्यमाने देवाःसर्वे बलान्विताः । दैत्यान्सर्वान्विनिर्जित्य स्वानि स्थानानि भेजिरे
tasmiṁstapastapyamāne devāḥsarve balānvitāḥ daityānsarvānvinirjitya svāni sthānāni bhejire
"While he thus performed austerity, all the mighty gods, defeating every demon, regained each his own domain."
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.181.12)
तस्य मूर्ध्नः समुद्भूतः सधूमोऽग्निस्तपोमयः । तिर्यगूर्ध्वमधोलोकानतपद्विष्वगीरितः
tasya mūrdhnaḥ samudbhūtaḥ sadhūmo'gnistapomayaḥ tiryagūrdhvamadholokānatapadviṣvagīritaḥ
"From his head there arose a smoking fire born of his austerity, which, spreading in every direction, scorched the worlds above, below, and on every side."
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.181.13)
तेन तप्ता दिवं त्यक्त्वा ब्रह्मलोकं ययुः सुराः । धात्रे विज्ञापयामासुस्तत्तपोविकृताननाः
tena taptā divaṁ tyaktvā brahmalokaṁ yayuḥ surāḥ dhātre vijñāpayāmāsustattapovikṛtānanāḥ
"Scorched by it, the gods abandoned heaven and went to Brahmaloka, and, their faces disfigured by that austerity's heat, they made their plea to Brahma, the self-born."
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.181.14)
अथ विज्ञापितो देवैर्व्यास तैरात्मभूर्विधिः । परीतो भृगुदक्षाद्यैर्ययौ दैत्येश्वराश्रमम्
atha vijñāpito devairvyāsa tairātmabhūrvidhiḥ parīto bhṛgudakṣādyairyayau daityeśvarāśramam
"O Vyasa, when the gods thus made their plea, the self-born Brahma, surrounded by Bhrigu, Daksha, and others, went to the hermitage of that lord of demons."
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.181.15)
प्रताप्य लोकानखिलांस्ततोऽसौ समागतं पद्मभवं ददर्श । वरं हि दातुं तमुवाच धाता वरं वृणीष्वेति पितामहोऽपि ॥ निशम्य वाचं मधुरां विधातु- र्वचोऽब्रवीदेवममूढबुद्धिः
pratāpya lokānakhilāṁstato'sau samāgataṁ padmabhavaṁ dadarśa varaṁ hi dātuṁ tamuvāca dhātā varaṁ vṛṇīṣveti pitāmaho'pi niśamya vācaṁ madhurāṁ vidhātu- rvaco'bravīdevamamūḍhabuddhiḥ
"That demon, who had scorched every world, saw lotus-born Brahma arriving; the Creator, come to grant a boon, said to him, \"Choose your boon.\" Hearing that sweet voice, the wise demon spoke as follows."
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.181.16)
हिरण्यकशिपुरुवाच । मृत्योर्भयं मे भगवन्प्रजेश पितामहाभून्न कदापि देव । शस्त्रास्त्रपाशाशनिशुष्कवृक्ष- गिरीन्द्रतोयाग्निरिपुप्रहारैः
hiraṇyakaśipuruvāca mṛtyorbhayaṁ me bhagavanprajeśa pitāmahābhūnna kadāpi deva śastrāstrapāśāśaniśuṣkavṛkṣa- girīndratoyāgniripuprahāraiḥ
Hiranyakashipu said: "O lord, O lord of creatures, O grandsire, let me never fear death, whether by weapon, missile, noose, thunderbolt, dry tree, mountain, water, fire, or blow of any foe —"
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.181.17)
देवैश्च दैत्यैर्मुनिभिश्च सिद्धैः त्वत्सृष्टजीवैर्बहुवाक्यतः किम् । स्वर्गे धरण्यां दिवसे निशायां नैवोर्ध्वतो नाप्यधतः प्रजेश
devaiśca daityairmunibhiśca siddhaiḥ tvatsṛṣṭajīvairbahuvākyataḥ kim svarge dharaṇyāṁ divase niśāyāṁ naivordhvato nāpyadhataḥ prajeśa
"— not from gods, demons, sages, or siddhas, nor from any creature of your creation; what more need I say? Not in heaven nor on earth, not by day nor by night, not from above nor from below, O lord of creatures."
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.181.18)
सनत्कुमार उवाच । तस्यैतदीदृग्वचनं निशम्य दैत्येन्द्र तुष्टोऽस्मि लभस्व सर्वम् । प्रणम्य विष्णुं मनसा तमाह दयान्वितोऽसाविति पद्मयोनिः
sanatkumāra uvāca tasyaitadīdṛgvacanaṁ niśamya daityendra tuṣṭo'smi labhasva sarvam praṇamya viṣṇuṁ manasā tamāha dayānvito'sāviti padmayoniḥ
Sanatkumara said: Hearing such words from him, that lotus-born one said, "O lord of demons, I am well pleased; obtain all of this" — and, bowing in his heart to Vishnu, full of compassion, spoke further to him.
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.181.19)
अलं तपस्ते परिपूर्णकामः समाः सहस्राणि च षण्णवत्यः । उत्तिष्ठ राज्यं कुरु दानवानां श्रुत्वा गिरं तत्सुमुखो बभूव
alaṁ tapaste paripūrṇakāmaḥ samāḥ sahasrāṇi ca ṣaṇṇavatyaḥ uttiṣṭha rājyaṁ kuru dānavānāṁ śrutvā giraṁ tatsumukho babhūva
"Enough of your austerity — your desire is now fulfilled; for ninety-six thousand years rule over the kingdom of the demons as you please. Rise up." Hearing this word, he became glad of face.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.181.20)
राज्याभिषिक्तः प्रपितामहेन त्रैलोक्यनाशाय मतिं चकार । उत्साद्य धर्मान् सकलान्प्रमत्तो जित्वाहवे सोऽपि सुरान्समस्तान्
rājyābhiṣiktaḥ prapitāmahena trailokyanāśāya matiṁ cakāra utsādya dharmān sakalānpramatto jitvāhave so'pi surānsamastān
"Anointed king by the great-grandsire, he resolved to destroy the three worlds; uprooting every dharma, grown reckless with power, he conquered all the gods in battle."
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.181.21)
ततो भयाद् इन्द्रमुखाश्च देवाः पितामहाज्ञां समवाप्य सर्वे । उपद्रुता दैत्यवरेण जाताः क्षीरोदधिं यत्र हरिस्तु शेते
tato bhayād indramukhāśca devāḥ pitāmahājñāṁ samavāpya sarve upadrutā daityavareṇa jātāḥ kṣīrodadhiṁ yatra haristu śete
"Then Indra and all the gods, in fear, receiving the grandsire's counsel, oppressed by that foremost demon, went to the ocean of milk where Hari lies asleep."
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.181.22)
आराधयामासुरतीव विष्णुं स्तुत्वा वचोभिः सुखदं हि मत्वा । निवेदयामासुरथो प्रसन्नं दुःखं स्वकीयं सकलं हि ते ते
ārādhayāmāsuratīva viṣṇuṁ stutvā vacobhiḥ sukhadaṁ hi matvā nivedayāmāsuratho prasannaṁ duḥkhaṁ svakīyaṁ sakalaṁ hi te te
"They worshiped Vishnu most devotedly, praised him with soothing words, and, deeming him pleased, laid before him the whole of their sorrow."
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.181.23)
श्रुत्वा तदीयं सकलं हि दुःखं तुष्टो रमेशः प्रददौ वरांस्तु । उत्थाय तस्माच्छयनादुपेन्द्रो निजानुरूपैर्विविधैर्वचोभिः
śrutvā tadīyaṁ sakalaṁ hi duḥkhaṁ tuṣṭo rameśaḥ pradadau varāṁstu utthāya tasmācchayanādupendro nijānurūpairvividhairvacobhiḥ
"Hearing the whole of their sorrow, the Lord of Lakshmi was pleased and granted them boons; rising from that couch, Upendra, with words fitting to each of them,"
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.181.24)
आश्वास्य देवानखिलान्मुनीन्वा उवाच वैश्वानरतुल्यतेजाः । दैत्यं हनिष्ये प्रसभं सुरेशाः प्रयात धामानि निजानि तुष्टाः
āśvāsya devānakhilānmunīnvā uvāca vaiśvānaratulyatejāḥ daityaṁ haniṣye prasabhaṁ sureśāḥ prayāta dhāmāni nijāni tuṣṭāḥ
"consoled all the gods and sages, and Vishnu, radiant as fire itself, said: \"O lords of gods, I shall slay this demon by force; go, all of you, contented, to your own abodes.\""
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.181.25)
श्रुत्वा रमेशस्य वचः सुरेशाः शक्रादिकास्ते निखिलाः सुतुष्टाः । ययुः स्वधामानि हिरण्यनेत्रा- नुजं च मत्वा निहतं मुनीश
śrutvā rameśasya vacaḥ sureśāḥ śakrādikāste nikhilāḥ sutuṣṭāḥ yayuḥ svadhāmāni hiraṇyanetrā- nujaṁ ca matvā nihataṁ munīśa
"Hearing the Lord of Lakshmi's word, Indra and all those gods rejoiced greatly, and, O sage, counting Hiranyanetra's younger brother as already slain, they departed each to his own abode."
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.181.26)
आश्रित्य रूपं जटिलं करालं दंष्ट्रायुधं तीक्ष्णनखं सुनासम् । सैंहं च नारं सुविदारितास्यं मार्तण्डकोटिप्रतिमं सुघोरम्
āśritya rūpaṁ jaṭilaṁ karālaṁ daṁṣṭrāyudhaṁ tīkṣṇanakhaṁ sunāsam saiṁhaṁ ca nāraṁ suvidāritāsyaṁ mārtaṇḍakoṭipratimaṁ sughoram
"Then, taking a form maned and terrible, with fangs for weapons, sharp-clawed, well-nostrilled, part-lion and part-man, with a gaping mouth,"
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.181.27)
युगान्तकालाग्निसमप्रभावं जगन्मयं किं बहुभिर्वचोभिः । अस्ते रवौ सोऽपि हि गच्छतीशो गतोऽसुराणां नगरीं महात्मा
yugāntakālāgnisamaprabhāvaṁ jaganmayaṁ kiṁ bahubhirvacobhiḥ aste ravau so'pi hi gacchatīśo gato'surāṇāṁ nagarīṁ mahātmā
"radiant as a million suns, mighty as the fire of universal dissolution at the end of the age, most terrible, that Lord pervading all the world — what need is there of many words? — that great-souled one went, at the setting of the sun, to the city of the demons."
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.181.28)
कृत्वा च युद्धं प्रबलैःस दैत्यै- र्हत्वाथ तान्दैत्यगणान्गृहीत्वा । बभ्राम तत्राद्भुतविक्रमश्च बभञ्ज तांस्तानसुरान्नृसिंहः
kṛtvā ca yuddhaṁ prabalaiḥsa daityai- rhatvātha tāndaityagaṇāngṛhītvā babhrāma tatrādbhutavikramaśca babhañja tāṁstānasurānnṛsiṁhaḥ
"Waging war with those mighty demons, slaying them, seizing them, that Narasimha of astonishing valor roamed there, breaking those demons apart."
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.181.29)
दृष्टः स दैत्यैरतुलप्रभाव- स्ते रेभिरे ते हि तथैव सर्वे । सिंहं च तं सर्वमयं निरीक्ष्य प्रह्लादनामा दितिजेन्द्रपुत्रः । उवाच राजानमयं मृगेन्द्रो जगन्मयः किं समुपागतश्च
dṛṣṭaḥ sa daityairatulaprabhāva- ste rebhire te hi tathaiva sarve siṁhaṁ ca taṁ sarvamayaṁ nirīkṣya prahlādanāmā ditijendraputraḥ uvāca rājānamayaṁ mṛgendro jaganmayaḥ kiṁ samupāgataśca
"That lion of matchless power was seen by the demons, and all of them cried out; seeing that lion pervading all things, Prahlada, son of the lord of Diti's sons, said to the king: \"Why has this lord of beasts, being of the very nature of the universe, come here?\""
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.181.30)
प्रह्लाद उवाच । एष प्रविष्टो भगवाननन्तो नृसिंहमात्रो नगरं त्वदन्तः । निवृत्य युद्धाच्छरणं प्रयाहि पश्यामि सिंहस्य करालमूर्त्तिम्
prahlāda uvāca eṣa praviṣṭo bhagavānananto nṛsiṁhamātro nagaraṁ tvadantaḥ nivṛtya yuddhāccharaṇaṁ prayāhi paśyāmi siṁhasya karālamūrttim
Prahlada said: "This is the infinite Lord himself, having entered this city in the form of Narasimha — turn back from war and go for refuge; I can see the terrible form of this lion."
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.181.31)
यस्मान्न योद्धा भुवनत्रयेऽपि कुरुष्व राज्यं विनमन्मृगेन्द्रम् । श्रुत्वा स्वपुत्रस्य वचो दुरात्मा तमाह भीतोऽसि किमत्र पुत्र
yasmānna yoddhā bhuvanatraye'pi kuruṣva rājyaṁ vinamanmṛgendram śrutvā svaputrasya vaco durātmā tamāha bhīto'si kimatra putra
"There is no one in the three worlds who can fight this lion — bow to this lord of beasts and rule your kingdom." Hearing his own son's words, that evil-minded one said to him, "Are you afraid, my son?"
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.181.32)
उक्त्वेति पुत्रं दितिजाधिनाथो दैत्यर्षभान्वीरवरान्स राजा । गृह्णन्तु वै सिंहममुं भवन्तो वीरा विरूपभ्रुकुटीक्षणं तु
uktveti putraṁ ditijādhinātho daityarṣabhānvīravarānsa rājā gṛhṇantu vai siṁhamamuṁ bhavanto vīrā virūpabhrukuṭīkṣaṇaṁ tu
"Having said this to his son, that king, lord of Diti's sons, said to his foremost heroic demons: \"All of you, seize this misshapen lion with its knitted brows.\""
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.181.33)
तस्याज्ञया दैत्यवरास्ततस्ते ग्रहीतुकामा विविशुर्मृगेन्द्रम् । क्षणेन दग्धाः शलभा इवाग्निं रूपाभिलाषात्प्रविविक्षवो वै
tasyājñayā daityavarāstataste grahītukāmā viviśurmṛgendram kṣaṇena dagdhāḥ śalabhā ivāgniṁ rūpābhilāṣātpravivikṣavo vai
"By his command, those foremost demons advanced, desiring to seize that lord of beasts; but whoever, desiring to approach that form, sought to enter it, was burnt in an instant like a moth in fire."
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.181.34)
दैत्येषु दग्धेष्वपि दैत्यराज- श्चकार युद्धं स मृगाधिपेन । शस्त्रैः समग्रैरखिलैस्तथास्त्रैः शक्त्यर्ष्टिपाशाङ्कुशपावकाद्यैः
daityeṣu dagdheṣvapi daityarāja- ścakāra yuddhaṁ sa mṛgādhipena śastraiḥ samagrairakhilaistathāstraiḥ śaktyarṣṭipāśāṅkuśapāvakādyaiḥ
"Even with his demons thus burnt to ash, that lord of demons made war upon that lord of beasts — with every weapon and missile, with spear, sword, noose, goad, fire, and the rest."
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.181.35)
संयुध्यतोरेव तयोर्जगाम ब्राह्मं दिनं व्यास हि शस्त्रपाण्योः । प्रवीरयोर्वीररवेण गर्जतोः परस्परं क्रोधसुयुक्तचेतसोः
saṁyudhyatoreva tayorjagāma brāhmaṁ dinaṁ vyāsa hi śastrapāṇyoḥ pravīrayorvīraraveṇa garjatoḥ parasparaṁ krodhasuyuktacetasoḥ
"O Vyasa, weapons in hand, roaring with the heroic war-cry, hearts filled with fury, those two heroes fought each other, and so passed that whole day from the sacred hour of dawn."
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.181.36)
ततः स दैत्यः सहसा बहूंश्च कृत्वा भुजान् शस्त्रयुतान्निरीक्ष्य । नृसिंहरूपं प्रययौ मृगेन्द्र संयुध्यमानं सहसा समन्तात्
tataḥ sa daityaḥ sahasā bahūṁśca kṛtvā bhujān śastrayutānnirīkṣya nṛsiṁharūpaṁ prayayau mṛgendra saṁyudhyamānaṁ sahasā samantāt
"Then that demon suddenly conjured many arms of his own, armed with weapons, and beheld them; and that lord of beasts, in the form of Narasimha, at once made war on him from every side."
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.181.37)
ततः सुयुद्धं त्वतिदुःसहं तु शस्त्रैःसमस्तैश्च तथाखिलास्त्रैः । कृत्वा महादैत्यवरो नृसिंहं क्षयं गतैः शूलधरोऽभ्युपायात्
tataḥ suyuddhaṁ tvatiduḥsahaṁ tu śastraiḥsamastaiśca tathākhilāstraiḥ kṛtvā mahādaityavaro nṛsiṁhaṁ kṣayaṁ gataiḥ śūladharo'bhyupāyāt
"Though he waged the most unbearable and terrible war with every weapon and every missile, that great demon-lord could not bring Narasimha even to exhaustion — then the trident-bearer, Vishnu, resorted to his own device."
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.181.38)
ततो गृहीतः स मृगाधिपेन भुजैरनेकैर्गिरिसारवद्भिः । निधाय जानौ स भुजान्तरेषु नखाङ्कुरैर्दानवमर्मभिद्भिः
tato gṛhītaḥ sa mṛgādhipena bhujairanekairgirisāravadbhiḥ nidhāya jānau sa bhujāntareṣu nakhāṅkurairdānavamarmabhidbhiḥ
"Then that lord of beasts seized him with many arms as strong as the essence of mountains, laid him across his thighs, held him between his arms, and with the sprouting tips of his claws that pierced the demon's very vitals,"
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.181.39)
नखास्त्रहृत्पद्ममसृग्विमिश्र- मुत्पाद्य जीवाद्विगतः क्षणेन । त्यक्तस्तदानीं स तु काष्ठभूतः पुनः पुनश्चूर्णितसर्वगात्रः
nakhāstrahṛtpadmamasṛgvimiśra- mutpādya jīvādvigataḥ kṣaṇena tyaktastadānīṁ sa tu kāṣṭhabhūtaḥ punaḥ punaścūrṇitasarvagātraḥ
"tore open his lotus heart with those claw-weapons, mingling it with blood, and in a single instant his life departed; then that body, become like a log of wood, was, after being crushed again and again, cast aside."
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.181.40)
तस्मिन्हते देवरिपौ प्रसन्नः प्रह्लादमामन्त्र्य कृतप्रणामम् । राज्येऽभिषिच्याद्भुतवीर्यविष्णु- स्ततः प्रयातो गतिमप्रतर्क्याम्
tasminhate devaripau prasannaḥ prahlādamāmantrya kṛtapraṇāmam rājye'bhiṣicyādbhutavīryaviṣṇu- stataḥ prayāto gatimapratarkyām
"When that enemy of the gods was slain, Vishnu of astonishing valor, well pleased, summoned Prahlada, who bowed before him, anointed him upon the kingdom, and then departed to that state beyond all conceiving."
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.181.41)
ततोऽतिहृष्टाःसकलाः सुरेशाः प्रणम्य विष्णुं दिशि विप्र तस्याम् । ययुः स्वधामानि पितामहाद्याः कृतस्वकार्यं भगवन्तमीड्यम्
tato'tihṛṣṭāḥsakalāḥ sureśāḥ praṇamya viṣṇuṁ diśi vipra tasyām yayuḥ svadhāmāni pitāmahādyāḥ kṛtasvakāryaṁ bhagavantamīḍyam
"Then all the gods, filled with great joy, O brahmin, bowing to Vishnu in that very direction, and knowing their purpose fulfilled, Brahma and all the rest departed each to his own abode, having honored that most worshipful Lord."
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.181.42)
प्रवर्णितं त्वन्धकजन्म रुद्राद् हिरण्यनेत्रस्य मृतिर्वराहात् । नृसिंहतस्तत्सहजस्य नाशः प्रह्लादराज्याप्तिरिति प्रसङ्गात्
pravarṇitaṁ tvandhakajanma rudrād hiraṇyanetrasya mṛtirvarāhāt nṛsiṁhatastatsahajasya nāśaḥ prahlādarājyāptiriti prasaṅgāt
"Thus have I told, in due order: the birth of Andhaka from Rudra, the death of Hiranyanetra by the Boar, the destruction of his own brother by Narasimha, and Prahlada's attainment of the kingdom."
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.181.43)
शृणु त्विदानीं द्विजवर्य मत्तोऽ- न्धकप्रभावं भवकृत् प्रलब्धम् । हरेण युद्धं खलु तस्य पश्चाद् गणाधिपत्यं गिरिशस्य तस्य
śṛṇu tvidānīṁ dvijavarya matto'- ndhakaprabhāvaṁ bhavakṛt pralabdham hareṇa yuddhaṁ khalu tasya paścād gaṇādhipatyaṁ giriśasya tasya
"Now hear from me, O foremost of the twice-born, the glory of that Andhaka — the deed wrought by Bhava, in which he afterward waged war with Hara and thereafter obtained from Girisha the lordship of the ganas."
