Rudra Samhita · Chapter 30
The Dialogue of Brahma and Vishnu
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.30.1)
nārada uvāca | brahman vidhe mahābhāga dhanyastvaṁ śivasaktadhīḥ | kathitaṁ sucaritraṁ te śaṅkarasya parātmanaḥ
Narada said: O Brahma, O Creator, greatly blessed one — blessed indeed are you, your mind fixed upon Shiva; you have told me this fine story of Shankara, the Supreme Self.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.30.2)
nijāśrame gate kāme sagaṇe saratau tataḥ | kimāsītkimakārṣīstvaṁ taścaritraṁ vadādhunā
When Kama, together with his hosts and with Rati, had gone back to his own abode, what happened then, and what did you do? Tell me that story now.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.30.3)
brahmovāca | śṛṇu nārada suprītyā caritraṁ śaśimaulinaḥ | yasya śravaṇamātreṇa nirvikāro bhavennaraḥ
Brahma said: Listen, Narada, with loving attention, to the story of the moon-crested one, by merely hearing which a man becomes free of every passion.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.30.4)
nijāśramaṁ gate kāme parivārasamanvite | yad babhūva tadā jātaṁ taccaritraṁ nibodha me
When Kama, together with his retinue, had returned to his own abode, learn from me the story of what then took place.
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.30.5)
naṣṭo'bhūnnārada mado vismayo'bhūcca me hṛdi | nirānandasya ca mune'pūrṇe nijamanorathe
O Narada, my pride was shattered, and astonishment filled my heart; O sage, joyless was I, my own desire left unfulfilled.
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.30.6)
aśocaṁ bahudhā citte gṛhṇīyātsa kathaṁ striyam | nirvikāro jitātmā sa śaṅkaro yogatatparaḥ
I grieved deeply in my heart: 'How could he — unchanging Shankara, master of his own self, devoted wholly to yoga — ever take a wife?'
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.30.7)
itthaṁ vicārya bahudhā tadāhaṁ vimado mune | hariṁ taṁ so'smaraṁ bhaktyā śivātmānaṁ svadehadam
Having thus pondered deeply, O sage, my pride now humbled, I called to mind, with devotion, that Hari who is one with Shiva's own self, giver of the body itself.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.30.8)
astavaṁ ca śubhastotrairdīnavākyasamanvitaiḥ | tacchrutvā bhagavānāśu babhūvāvirhi me purā
And I praised him with auspicious hymns, joined with words of humility; hearing this, the Lord swiftly appeared before me.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.30.9)
caturbhujo'ravindākṣaḥ śaṅkhapadmagadādharaḥ | lasatpītapaṭaḥ śyāmatanurbhaktapriyo hariḥ
Four-armed, lotus-eyed, bearing conch, lotus, and mace, resplendent in shining yellow garments, dark-hued of body, beloved of his devotees — Hari.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.30.10)
taṁ dṛṣṭvā tādṛśamahaṁ suśaraṇyaṁ muhurmuhuḥ | astavaṁ ca punaḥ premṇā bāṣpagadgadayā girā
Seeing him thus, that most gracious refuge, again and again, I praised him once more with love, in a voice choked with tears.
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.30.11)
harirākarṇya tatstotraṁ suprasanna uvāca mām | duḥkhahā nijabhaktānāṁ brahmāṇaṁ śaraṇaṁ gatam
Hari, hearing that hymn, greatly pleased, spoke to me, Brahma, who had come to him for refuge — he who removes the sorrow of his devotees.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.30.12)
hariruvāca | vidhe brahman mahāprājña dhanyastvaṁ lokakāraka | kimarthaṁ smaraṇaṁ me'dya kṛtaṁ ca kriyate nutiḥ
Hari said: O Creator Brahma, greatly wise one, blessed are you, maker of the worlds; why have you remembered me today, and for what reason is this hymn being offered?
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.30.13)
kiṁ jātaṁ te mahadduḥkhaṁ madagre tadvadādhunā | śamayiṣyāmi tatsarvaṁ nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
What great sorrow has come upon you? Tell it to me now, here before me; I shall put an end to it entirely — there is no need for doubt in this.
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.30.14)
brahmovāca | iti viṣṇorvacaḥ śrutvā kiñciducchvasitānanaḥ | avocaṁ vacanaṁ viṣṇuṁ praṇamya sukṛtāñjaliḥ
Brahma said: Hearing these words of Vishnu, my face brightening a little with a sigh of relief, I bowed with hands folded in reverence and spoke these words to Vishnu.
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.30.15)
devadeva ramānātha madvārtāṁ śṛṇu mānada | śrutvā ca karuṇāṁ kṛtvā hara duḥkhaṁ kamāvaha
O God of gods, Lord of Rama, O giver of honor, hear my tale; and having heard it, be compassionate and take away my sorrow.
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.30.16)
rudrasammohanārthaṁ hi kāmaṁ preṣitavānaham | parivārayutaṁ viṣṇo samāramadhubāndhavam
O Vishnu, in order to bewilder Rudra, I sent Kama, together with his retinue, and with his friend Madhu.
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.30.17)
cakruste vividhopāyān niṣphalā abhavaṁśca te | nābhavattasya sammoho yoginaḥ samadarśinaḥ
They employed every kind of means, yet all of them proved fruitless; no delusion whatsoever arose in him, that yogi of equal vision toward all things.
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.30.18)
ityākarṇya vaco me sa harirmāṁ prāha vismitaḥ | vijñātākhilado jñānī śivatattvaviśāradaḥ
Hearing these words of mine, Hari, astonished, spoke to me — he who knows all things, the wise one, expert in the truth of Shiva.
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.30.19)
viṣṇuruvāca | kasmāddhetoriti matistava jātā pitāmaha | sarvaṁ vicārya sudhiyā brahman satyaṁ hi tadvada
Vishnu said: For what reason, O Grandsire, did this notion arise within you? Consider it all carefully, O Brahma, and tell me the plain truth.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.30.20)
brahmovāca | śṛṇu tāta caritraṁ tat tava māyā vimohinī | tadadhīnaṁ jagatsarvaṁ sukhaduḥkhāditatparam
Brahma said: Listen, my son, to this story — it is your own bewildering Maya; this entire world, given over to joy and sorrow, lies under its sway.
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.30.21)
yayaiva preṣitaścāhaṁ pāpaṁ kartuṁ samudyataḥ | āsaṁ tacchṛṇu deveśa vadāmi tava śāsanāt
By that very Maya was I driven, made ready to commit a sin; hear it now, O Lord of gods — I speak it at your bidding.
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.30.22)
sṛṣṭiprārambhasamaye daśa putrā hi jajñire | dakṣādyāstanayā caikā vāgbhavāpyatisundarī
At the beginning of creation, ten sons were born, Daksha foremost among them, and one daughter too, born of Speech, exceedingly beautiful.
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.30.23)
dharmo vakṣaḥsthalātkāmo manaso'nyo'pi dehataḥ | jātāstatra sutāṁ dṛṣṭvā mama moho'bhavaddhare
Dharma was born from my chest, Kama from my mind, and others too from my body; and seeing that daughter there, O Hari, delusion arose in me.
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.30.24)
kudṛṣṭyā tāṁ samadrākṣaṁ tava māyāvimohitaḥ | tatkṣaṇāddhara āgatya māmanindatsutānapi
Deluded by your Maya, I gazed upon her with an evil eye; and in that very instant, Hara arrived and reproached both me and my sons as well.
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.30.25)
dhikkāraṁ kṛtavān sarvān nijaṁ matvā paraṁ prabhum | jñāninaṁ yoginaṁ nāthaṁ bhoginaṁ vijitendriyam
He heaped scorn upon us all, esteeming himself the supreme Lord — knower, yogi, master, enjoyer, and conqueror of the senses.
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.30.26)
putro bhūtvā mama hare'nindanmāṁ ca samakṣataḥ | iti duḥkhaṁ mahanme hi taduktaṁ tava sannidhau
Being my own son, O Hari, he reproached me openly, before my very eyes; this great sorrow of mine I have now laid before you.
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.30.27)
gṛhṇīyādyadi patnīṁ sa syāṁ sukhī naṣṭaduḥkhadhīḥ | etadarthaṁ samāyātaḥ śaraṇaṁ tava keśava
If only he would take a wife, I would be happy, and my sorrowful mind set at ease; for this very reason, O Keshava, I have come to take refuge in you.
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.30.28)
brahmovāca | ityākarṇya vaco me hi brahmaṇo madhusūdanaḥ | vihasya māṁ drutaṁ prāha harṣayanbhavakārakam
Brahma said: Hearing these words of mine, Madhusudana, laughing, quickly spoke to me, delighting me, the maker of worldly becoming.
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.30.29)
viṣṇuruvāca | vidhe śṛṇu hi madvākyaṁ sarvaṁ bhramanivāraṇam | sarvaṁ vedāgamādīnāṁ sammataṁ paramārthataḥ
Vishnu said: O Creator, listen to my words, which shall dispel all your confusion — words that accord, in the highest sense, with the Vedas and the Agamas.
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.30.30)
mahāmūḍhamatiścādya sañjāto'si kathaṁ vidhe | vedavaktāpi nikhilalokakartā hi durmatiḥ
O Creator, how have you today become so deeply confused — you, the very speaker of the Vedas, the maker of all worlds, now fallen into such poor understanding?
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.30.31)
jaḍatāṁ tyaja mandātman kuru tvaṁ nedṛśīṁ matim | kiṁ bruvantyakhilā vedāḥ stutyā tatsmara saddhiyā
O feeble-minded one, cast off this dullness; hold no longer to such a notion. Recall, with sound judgment, what all the Vedas proclaim in their hymns of praise.
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.30.32)
rudraṁ jānāsi durbuddhe svasutaṁ parameśvaram | vedavaktāpi vijñānaṁ vismṛtaṁ te'khilaṁ vidhe
O foolish one, you regard Rudra, the Supreme Lord, as merely your own son; O Creator, though the very speaker of the Vedas, you have forgotten all true wisdom.
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.30.33)
śaṅkaraṁ surasāmānyaṁ matvā drohaṁ karoṣi hi | subuddhirvigatā te'dyāvirbhūtā kumatistathā
Regarding Shankara as but an ordinary god, you commit offense against him; your good sense has vanished today, and confused thinking has taken its place.
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.30.34)
tattvasiddhāntamākhyātaṁ śṛṇu sadbuddhimāvaha | yathārthaṁ nigamākhyātaṁ nirṇīya bhavakārakam
Hear the true doctrine as it has been declared; bring your understanding to bear, and, O maker of existence, rightly discern what the scriptures truly proclaim.
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.30.35)
śivaḥ sarvasvakartā hi bhartā hartā parātparaḥ | parabrahma pareśaśca nirguṇo nitya eva ca
Shiva is the maker of all things, their sustainer, and their destroyer — the highest of the high. He is the Supreme Brahman, the Supreme Lord, without attributes, and eternal.
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.30.36)
anirdeśyo nirvikāraḥ paramātmādvayo'cyutaḥ | ananto'ntakaraḥ svāmī vyāpakaḥ parameśvaraḥ
He is beyond description, unchanging, the one, non-dual Supreme Self, imperishable; infinite, yet also the ender of all things, the Lord, all-pervading, the Supreme Ruler.
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.30.37)
sṛṣṭisthitivināśānāṁ kartā triguṇabhāgvibhuḥ | brahmaviṣṇumaheśākhyo rajaḥ sattvatamaḥ paraḥ
He is the doer of creation, preservation, and destruction, the all-pervading one who assumes the three gunas; known by the names Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesha, he is yet beyond Rajas, Sattva, and Tamas.
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.30.38)
māyābhinno nirīhaśca māyo māyāviśāradaḥ | saguṇo'pi svatantraśca nijānando'vikalpakaḥ
He stands apart from Maya, desireless, yet himself the master of Maya and expert in her ways; though possessed of attributes, he is independent, blissful in his own self, and beyond all distinction.
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.30.39)
ātmārāmo hi nirdvandvo bhaktādhīnaḥsuvigrahaḥ | yogī yogarato nityaṁ yogamārgapradarśakaḥ
He delights in his own self, beyond all dualities, subject only to his devotees, of beauteous form; ever the yogi absorbed in yoga, and the revealer of the path of yoga itself.
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.30.40)
garvāpahārī lokeśaḥ sarvadā dīnavatsalaḥ | etādṛśo hi yaḥ svāmī svaputraṁ manyase hi tam
He is the destroyer of pride, Lord of the worlds, ever tender toward the humble — and such a Lord as this, you regard merely as your own son!
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.30.41)
īdṛśaṁ tyaja kujñānaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja tasya vai | bhaja sarvātmanā śambhuṁ santuṣṭaḥ śaṁ vidhāsyati
Abandon such false understanding, and take refuge in him alone. Worship Shambhu with your whole soul; pleased, he shall grant you peace and well-being.
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.30.42)
gṛhṇīyācchaṅkaraḥ patnīṁ vicāro hṛdi cettava | śivāmuddiśya sutapaḥ kuru brahman śivaṁ smaran
If it is your heart's wish that Shankara take a wife, then, O Brahma, remembering Shiva, perform excellent austerity directed toward Shiva — the goddess, Shivā.
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.30.43)
kuru dhyānaṁ śivāyātsvaṁ kāmamuddiśya taṁ hṛdi | sā cetprasannā deveśī sarvaṁ kāryaṁ vidhāsyati
Meditate upon Shivā, holding your own wish fixed within your heart; and if that goddess, Lady of the gods, becomes pleased, she shall bring all things to fulfillment.
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.30.44)
kṛtvāvatāraṁ saguṇā yadi syānmānuṣī śivā | kasyacittanayā loke sā tatpatnī bhaved dhruvam
If Shivā, assuming form with attributes, should incarnate as a mortal woman, born in this world as someone's daughter, then she would surely become his wife.
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.30.45)
dakṣamājñāpaya brahman tapaḥ kuryyātprayatnataḥ | tāmutpādayituṁ patnīṁ śivārthaṁ bhaktitaḥ svataḥ
O Brahma, command Daksha to undertake austerity with his utmost effort, of his own will and devotion, so that he may obtain her, destined to be Shiva's wife, as his own daughter.
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.30.46)
bhaktādhīnau ca tau tāta suvijñeyau śivāśivau | svecchayā saguṇau jātau parabrahmasvarūpiṇau
O father, know well that both Shiva and Shivā are subject to their devotees; of their own free will they have taken on form and attributes, though in their true nature they are the Supreme Brahman itself.
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.30.47)
brahmovāca | ityuktvā tatkṣaṇaṁ meśaḥ śivaṁ sasmāra svaprabhum | kṛpayā tasya samprāpya jñānamūce ca māṁ tataḥ
Brahma said: Having said this, Lord Vishnu at once called to mind his own Master, Shiva; and having received knowledge by his grace, he then spoke to me.
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.30.48)
viṣṇuruvāca | vidhe smara puroktaṁ yadvacanaṁ śaṅkareṇa ca | prārthitena yadāvābhyāmutpannābhyāṁ tadicchayā
Vishnu said: O Creator, recall that word once spoken by Shankara, when we two, having been brought into being by his own will, made our prayer to him.
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.30.49)
vismṛtaṁ tava tatsarvaṁ dhanyā yā śāmbhavī parā | tayā sammohitaṁ sarvaṁ durvijñeyā śivaṁ vinā
You have forgotten all of that; blessed indeed is that supreme power of Shambhu, by which all this world lies bewildered — a mystery hard to fathom apart from Shiva himself.
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.30.50)
yadā hi saguṇo jātaḥ svecchayā nirguṇaḥ śivaḥ | māmutpādya tatastvāṁ ca svaśaktyā suvihārakṛt
When the attributeless Shiva, by his own will, took on attributes, he, delighting in his own divine play, brought forth first me, and then you, through his own power.
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.30.51)
upādideśa tvāṁ śambhuḥ sṛṣṭikāryaṁ tadā prabhuḥ | tatpālanaṁ ca māṁ brahman somaḥ sūtikaro'vyayaḥ
Then the Lord Shambhu appointed you, O Brahma, to the task of creation, and me to that of preservation; he, the imperishable Soma, is the true begetter of all things.
Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.30.52)
tadā vāṁ veśma samprāptau sāñjalī natamastakau | bhava tvamasi sarveśo'vatārī guṇarūpadhṛk
Then, having come before his abode, we two, hands folded, heads bowed, said: 'You are Bhava, you are the Lord of all, the one who takes incarnation, bearing form and attributes.'
Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.30.53)
ityuktaḥ prāha sa svāmī vihasya karuṇānvitaḥ | divamudvīkṣya suprītyā nānālīlāviśāradaḥ
Thus addressed, that compassionate Lord, smiling, gazing lovingly up at the sky, he who is expert in every manner of divine play, spoke.
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.30.54)
madrūpaṁ paramaṁ viṣṇo īdṛśaṁ hyaṅgato vidheḥ | prakaṭībhavitā loke nāmnā rudraḥ prakīrtitaḥ
O Vishnu, this supreme form of mine shall, in due course, arise from a limb of the Creator and appear in the world, proclaimed by the name Rudra.
Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.30.55)
pūrṇarūpaḥ sa me pūjyaḥ sadā vāṁ sarvakāmakṛt | layakartā guṇādhyakṣo nirviśeṣaḥ suyogakṛt
That full form of mine shall ever be worthy of worship by you both, and shall fulfill every desire; he shall be the doer of dissolution, overseer of the gunas, beyond all distinction, and a great master of yoga.
Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.30.56)
tridevā api me rūpaṁ haraḥ pūrṇo viśeṣataḥ | umāyā api rūpāṇi bhaviṣyanti tridhā sutau
The three gods too are forms of mine, but Hara especially is my complete and full form; and forms of Uma, too, shall come into being, in threefold manner.
Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.30.57)
lakṣmīrnāma hareḥ patnī brahmapatnī sarasvatī | pūrṇarūpā satī nāma rudrapatnī bhaviṣyati
Lakshmi, by name, shall be Hari's wife; Sarasvati shall be Brahma's wife; and she of the fullest form, named Sati, shall become the wife of Rudra.
Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.30.58)
viṣṇuruvāca | ityuktvāntarhito jātaḥ kṛpāṁ kṛtvā maheśvaraḥ | abhūtāṁ sukhināvāvāṁ svasvakāryaparāyaṇau
Vishnu said: Having said this, and having shown his grace, Maheshvara vanished from sight; and we two, made happy, gave ourselves over each to his own task.
Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.30.59)
samayaṁ prāpya sastrīkāvāvāṁ brahmanna śaṅkaraḥ | avatīrṇaḥ svayaṁ rudranāmā kailāsasaṁśrayaḥ
O Brahma, in due time we both, together with our wives, remained as we were; but Shankara himself took incarnation, under the name Rudra, and made his abode on Kailasa.
Verse 60 (shiva.rudra.30.60)
avatīrṇā śivābhūtsā satī nāma prajeśvara | tadutpādanahetorhi yatno'taḥ kārya eva vai
Shivā too took incarnation, O Lord of creatures, becoming she who is named Sati; and so, for the sake of bringing about her birth, effort must indeed now be made.
Verse 61 (shiva.rudra.30.61)
ityuktvāntardadhe viṣṇuḥ kṛtvā sa karuṇāṁ parām | prāpnuvaṁ pramudaṁ cātha hyadhikaṁ gatamatsaraḥ
Having said this, Vishnu, having shown supreme compassion, vanished from sight; and I then, my envy now dispelled, was filled with great and abounding joy.
