The Hymn to Durga and Brahma's Boon

Chapter 30All chaptersChapter 32

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.31.1)

nārada uvāca | brahman tāta mahāprājña vada no vadatāṁ vara | gate viṣṇau kimabhavadakārṣītkiṁ vidhe bhavān

Narada said: O Brahma, father, greatly wise one, best of speakers, tell us — when Vishnu had departed, what happened, and what did you do, O Creator?

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.31.2)

brahmovāca | vipranandanavarya tvaṁ sāvadhānatayā śṛṇu | viṣṇau gate bhagavati yadakārṣamahaṁ khalu

Brahma said: O best of Brahmin sons, listen attentively; when the Lord Vishnu had departed, what I then did —

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.31.3)

vidyāvidyātmikāṁ śuddhāṁ parabrahmasvarūpiṇīm | staumi devīṁ jagaddhātrīṁ durgāṁ śambhupriyāṁ sadā

—I praised the goddess, embodying both knowledge and ignorance, pure, of the very form of the Supreme Brahman, sustainer of the world — Durga, ever beloved of Shambhu.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.31.4)

sarvatra vyāpinīṁ nityāṁ nirālambāṁ nirākulām | tridevajananīṁ vande sthūlasthūlāmarūpiṇīm

All-pervading, eternal, without support, ever untroubled, mother of the three gods — I bow before her, grossest of the gross, yet without form.

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.31.5)

tvaṁ citiḥ paramānandā paramātmasvarūpiṇī | prasannā bhava deveśi matkāryaṁ kuru te namaḥ

You are pure consciousness, supreme bliss itself, of the very nature of the Supreme Self; be gracious, O Lady of the gods, accomplish my task — homage to you.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.31.6)

evaṁ saṁstūyamānā sā yoganidrā mayā mune | āvirbabhūva pratyakṣaṁ devarṣe caṇḍikā mama

Thus praised by me, O sage, O celestial seer, that Yoganidra, Chandika herself, appeared directly before me.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.31.7)

snigdhāñjanadyutiścārurūpā divyacaturbhujā | siṁhasthā varahastā ca muktāmaṇikacotkaṭā

Radiant as polished collyrium, lovely in form, divinely four-armed, seated upon a lion, her hand held in the boon-granting gesture, her hair adorned with pearls.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.31.8)

śaradindvānanā śubhracandrabhālā trilocanā | sarvāvayavaramyā ca kamalāṅghrinakhadyutiḥ

Her face like the autumn moon, her brow bright as the crescent, three-eyed, beautiful in every limb, the nails of her lotus feet aglow.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.31.9)

samakṣaṁ tāmumāṁ vīkṣya mune śaktiṁ śivasya hi | bhaktyā vinatatuṅgāṁśaḥ prāstavaṁ supraṇamya vai

O sage, seeing before me that Uma, none other than Shiva's own Shakti, I, my proud head bowed low in devotion, prostrated myself fully and praised her.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.31.10)

brahmovāca | namo namaste jagataḥpravṛtti- nivṛttirūpe sthitisargarūpe | carācarāṇāṁ bhavatī suśaktiḥ sanātanī sarvavimohanīti

Brahma said: Homage, homage to you, who take the form of the world's activity and its cessation, the form of both its preservation and its creation; you are the eternal power behind all things moving and unmoving, the bewilderer of the whole universe.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.31.11)

yā śrīḥ sadā keśavamūrtimālā viśvambharā yā sakalaṁ bibharti | yā tvaṁ purā sṛṣṭikarī maheśī hartrī trilokasya parā guṇebhyaḥ

You who, as Shri, are ever the garland adorning Keshava's form; you who, as Vishvambhara, sustain all things; you who of old were the creatrix, the great goddess, the destroyer of the three worlds, and stand beyond the gunas.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.31.12)

yā yogināṁ vai mahitā manojñā sā tvaṁ namaste paramāṇusāre | yamādipūte hṛdi yogināṁ yā yā yogināṁ dhyānapathe pratītā

You who are honored and beloved among the yogis, homage to you, essence subtler than the atom; you who dwell within the hearts of yogis purified by yama and the rest, you who reveal yourself upon the meditative path of the yogis.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.31.13)

prakāśaśuddhyādiyutā virāgā sā tvaṁ hi vidyā vividhāvalambā | kūṭasthamavyaktamanantarūpaṁ tvaṁ bibhratī kālamayī jaganti

Endowed with light, purity, and the like, ever dispassionate — you are that knowledge resting upon manifold foundations; bearing the unmoving, unmanifest, and infinite form, you, made of time itself, sustain all the worlds.

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.31.14)

vikārabījaṁ prakaroṣi nityaṁ guṇānvitā sarvajaneṣu nūnam | tvaṁ vai guṇānāṁ ca śive trayāṇāṁ nidānabhūtā ca tataḥ parāsi

You ever set forth the seed of change, taking on the gunas among all beings; O Shivā, you are the very source of the three gunas, and yet you remain beyond them.

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.31.15)

satvaṁ rajastāmasa ityamīṣāṁ vikārahīnā sabhuvasturīyā | sā tvaṁ guṇānāṁ jagadekahetuṁ brahmāntarārambhasi cātsi pāsi

Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas — beyond change with regard to all three, you are the fourth, transcendent state; you, the sole cause of the world of the gunas, begin creation from within Brahman itself, and you both consume it and protect it.

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.31.16)

aśeṣajagatāṁ bīje jñeyajñānasvarūpiṇi | jagaddhitāya satataṁ śivapatni namo'stu te

O seed of all the worlds, embodiment of both the knowable and of knowledge itself, ever devoted to the world's welfare, O consort of Shiva, homage be to you.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.31.17)

ityākarṇya vacaḥ sā me kālī lokavibhāvinī | prītyā māṁ jagatāmūce sraṣṭāraṁ janaśabdavat

Hearing these words of mine, Kali, illuminator of all the worlds, spoke lovingly to me, the creator of the worlds, as one speaking familiarly to any person.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.31.18)

devyuvāca | brahman kimarthaṁ bhavatā stutāhamavadhāraya | ucyatāṁ yadi dhṛṣyo'si tacchīghraṁ purato mama

The goddess said: O Brahma, know this — why have you praised me? If you have the courage, speak it quickly before me.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.31.19)

pratyakṣamapi jātāyāṁ siddhiḥ kāryasya niścitā | tasmāttvaṁ vāñchitaṁ brūhi yā kariṣyāmi bhāvitā

Now that I have appeared before you directly, the fulfillment of your task is assured; so tell me what you desire, and I, resolved, shall accomplish it.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.31.20)

brahmovāca | śṛṇu devi maheśāni kṛpāṁ kṛtvā mamopari | manorathasthaṁ sarvajñe pravadāmi tvadājñayā

Brahma said: Hear me, O goddess, great Lady, showing your grace upon me; O all-knowing one, I shall now speak, at your command, what lies in my heart.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.31.21)

yaḥ patistava deveśi lalāṭānme'bhavatpurā | śivo rudrākhyayā yogī sa vai kailāsamāsthitaḥ

O Lady of the gods, your husband, who once arose from my very brow, Shiva, the yogi known by the name Rudra, now dwells upon Kailasa.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.31.22)

tapaścarati bhūteśa eka evāvikalpakaḥ | apatnīko nirvikāro na dvitīyāṁ samīhate

The Lord of all beings performs austerity, alone, undivided, without a wife, unchanging; he desires no second companion.

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.31.23)

taṁ mohaya yathā cānyāṁ dvitīyāṁ sati vīkṣate | tvadṛte tasya no kācidbhaviṣyati manoharā

Delude him in such a way that, though you exist, he comes to see you as another — for apart from you, no woman shall ever hold his heart.

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.31.24)

tasmāttvameva rūpeṇa bhavasva haramohinī | sutā bhūtvā ca dakṣasya rudrapatnī śive bhava

Therefore, taking on a new form, become yourself the enchantress of Hara; O Shivā, becoming the daughter of Daksha, become the wife of Rudra.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.31.25)

yathā dhṛtaśarīrā tvaṁ lakṣmīrūpeṇa keśavam | āmodayasi viśvasya hitāyaitaṁ tathā kuru

Just as you, having assumed a body, delight Keshava in the form of Lakshmi, so too, for the good of the whole universe, do the same here.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.31.26)

kāntābhilāṣamātraṁ me dṛṣṭvānindad vṛṣadhvajaḥ | sa kathaṁ vanitāṁ devī svecchayā saṅgrahīṣyati

Seeing merely my longing for a wife, the bull-bannered one reproached me; O goddess, how then would he, of his own free will, ever accept a woman?

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.31.27)

hare gṛhītakānte tu kathaṁ sṛṣṭiḥ śubhāvahā | ādyantamadhye caitasya hetau tasminvirāgiṇi

But if Hara does not take a wife, how shall creation, auspicious in its beginning, middle, and end, come to pass — since its very cause rests in that dispassionate one?

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.31.28)

iti cintāparo nāhaṁ tvadanyaṁ śaraṇaṁ hitam | kṛcchravāṁstena viśvasya hitāyaitatkuruṣva me

Thus anxious, I know no refuge or good but you; distressed as I am by this, do this for me, for the sake of the whole universe.

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.31.29)

Neither Vishnu, nor Lakshmi, nor Manobhava is able to delude him — nor am I, O mother of the world; there is no one else at all, apart from you.

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.31.30)

tasmāttvaṁ dakṣajā bhūtvā divyarūpā maheśvarī | tatpatnī bhava madbhaktyā yoginaṁ mohayeśvaram

Therefore, becoming the daughter of Daksha, O great and divinely formed goddess, become his wife; and out of devotion to me, bewilder that yogi Lord.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.31.31)

dakṣastapati deveśi kṣīrodottaratīragaḥ | tvāmuddiśya samādhāya manastvayi dṛḍhavrataḥ

O Lady of the gods, Daksha is performing austerity upon the northern shore of the Ocean of Milk, his mind fixed upon you, firm in his vow, wholly devoted to you.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.31.32)

brahmovāca ityākarṇya vacaḥ sā cintāmāpa śivā tadā | uvāca ca svamanasi vismitā jagadambikā

Brahma said: Hearing these words, Shivā fell into thought; and, astonished, the mother of the world spoke to herself in her own mind.

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.31.33)

devyuvāca | aho sumahadāścaryaṁ vedavaktā'pi viśvakṛt | mahājñānaparo bhūtvā vidhātā kiṁ vadatyayam

The goddess said: Ah, what a great wonder is this! Even the speaker of the Vedas, the maker of the universe, possessed of the highest knowledge — what is this Creator saying?

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.31.34)

vidheścetasi sañjāto mahāmoho'sukhāvahaḥ | yadvaraṁ nirvikāraṁ taṁ sammohayitumicchati

A great delusion, one that brings only unhappiness, has arisen in the Creator's mind — in that he wishes to bewilder that supreme, unchanging one.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.31.35)

This Creator desires from me the boon of Hara's delusion — but what is to be gained by it? That all-pervading Lord is beyond delusion, beyond all division.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.31.36)

parabrahmākhyo yaḥ śambhurnirguṇo nirvikāravān | tasyāhaṁ sarvadā dāsī tadājñāvaśagā sadā

He who is known as the Supreme Brahman, Shambhu, attributeless and unchanging — I am ever his handmaiden, forever subject to his command.

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.31.37)

sa eva pūrṇarūpeṇa rudranāmābhavacchivaḥ | bhaktoddhāraṇahetorhi svatantraḥ parameśvaraḥ

He himself, in his complete form, became Shiva, known by the name Rudra; and it is for the sake of delivering his devotees that this independent, Supreme Lord takes on such a form.

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.31.38)

He is the very Lord of Hari and of the Creator, never in the least inferior to Shiva; devoted to yoga, standing beyond Maya itself, Lord of Maya, and higher than the highest.

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.31.39)

matvā tamātmajaṁ brahmā sāmānyasurasannibham | icchatyayaṁ mohayitumato'jñānavimohitaḥ

Regarding him as merely his own son, as though he were an ordinary god, this Brahma, deluded by ignorance, wishes to have him bewitched.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.31.40)

na dadyāccedvaraṁ vedanītirbhraṣṭā bhavediti | kiṁ kuryāṁ yena na vibhuḥ kruddhaḥ syānme maheśvaraḥ

'If I do not grant this boon, the very ordinance of the Vedas would be violated' — so what am I to do, that the mighty Lord Maheshvara not become angry with me?

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.31.41)

brahmovāca | vicāryetthaṁ maheśaṁ taṁ sasmāra manasā śivā | prāpyānujñāṁ śivasyāthovāca durgā ca māṁ tadā

Brahma said: Having pondered thus, Shivā called Mahesha to mind; and, having received his consent, Durga then spoke to me.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.31.42)

durgovāca | yaduktaṁ bhavatā brahman samastaṁ satyameva tat | madṛte mohayitrīha śaṅkarasya na vidyate

Durga said: O Brahma, all that you have said is indeed the truth; apart from me, there exists no other who could bewitch Shankara.

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.31.43)

hare'gṛhītadāre tu sṛṣṭirnaiṣā sanātanī | bhaviṣyatīti tatsatyaṁ bhavatā pratipāditam

And that, if Hara does not take a wife, this eternal creation shall not come to pass — this truth you have rightly established.

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.31.44)

mamāpi mohane yanno vidyate'sya mahāprabhoḥ | tvadvākyād dviguṇo me'dya prayatno'bhūtsa nirbharaḥ

Though even I have no true power to bewitch this great Lord, at your word, my effort today has grown twofold, full and unreserved.

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.31.45)

ahaṁ tathā yatiṣyāmi yathā dāraparigraham | haraḥ kariṣyati vidhe svayameva vimohitaḥ

O Creator, I shall strive in such a way that Hara, himself bewildered, shall of his own accord come to take a wife.

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.31.46)

satīmūrtimahaṁ dhṛtvā tasyaiva vaśavartinī | bhaviṣyāmi mahābhāgā lakṣmīrviṣṇoryathā priyā

Assuming the form of Sati, I shall become subject to his will, greatly blessed, just as Lakshmi is the beloved of Vishnu.

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.31.47)

yathā so'pi mayaiveha vaśavartī sadā bhavet | tathā yatnaṁ kariṣyāmi tasyaiva kṛpayā vidhe

O Creator, I shall strive, through his very grace, in such a way that he too shall ever remain subject to me alone.

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.31.48)

utpannā dakṣajāyāyāṁ satīrūpeṇa śaṅkaram | ahaṁ sabhājayiṣyāmi līlayā taṁ pitāmaha

O Grandsire, being born to Daksha's wife, taking the form of Sati, I shall, through my own divine play, draw Shankara to myself.

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.31.49)

yathānyajanturavanau vartate vanitāvaśe | madbhaktyā sa haro vāmāvaśavartī bhaviṣyati

Just as any other creature on earth remains subject to a woman, so too, through devotion to me, that Hara shall become subject to my will, as a husband to his wife.

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.31.50)

brahmovāca | mahyamitthaṁ samābhāṣya śivā sā jagadambikā | vīkṣyamāṇā mayā tāta tatraivāntardadhe tataḥ

Brahma said: Having thus spoken to me, O son, Shivā, the mother of the world, vanished right there, even as I looked on.

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.31.51)

tasyāmantarhitāyāṁ tu so'haṁ lokapitāmahaḥ | agamaṁ yatra svasutāstebhyaḥ sarvamavarṇayam

When she had vanished, I, the Grandsire of the worlds, went to where my own sons were, and told them everything that had happened.
