Rudra Samhita · Chapter 34
Sati's Birth and Her Childhood Play
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.34.1)
brahmovāca | etasminnantare devamune lokapitāmahaḥ | tatrāgamamahaṁ prītyā jñātvā taccaritaṁ drutam
Brahma said: Meanwhile, O sage among the gods, I, the grandfather of the worlds, having quickly and affectionately learned of that event, came there.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.34.2)
asāntvayamahaṁ dakṣaṁ pūrvavatsuvicakṣaṇaḥ | akārṣaṁ tena susnehaṁ tava suprītimāvahan
Being wise as before, I consoled Daksha, and, with affection, brought forth in him a deep love for you.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.34.3)
svātmajaṁ munivaryaṁ tvāṁ suprītyā devavallabham | samāśvāsya samādāya pratyapadye svadhāma ha
Having comforted and taken with me my own son — you, O foremost of sages, beloved of the gods — I, with great affection, returned to my own abode.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.34.4)
tataḥ prajāpatirdakṣo'nunīto me nijastriyām | janayāmāsa duhitṝḥ subhagāḥ ṣaṣṭisammitāḥ
Then Daksha the Prajapati, thus placated by me, begot through his own wife sixty fortunate daughters.
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.34.5)
tāsāṁ vivāhaṁ kṛtavān dharmādibhiratandritaḥ | tadeva śṛṇu suprītyā pravadāmi munīśvara
He unwearyingly arranged their marriages according to dharma and proper rites; hear, O lord of sages, that very account which I now relate with pleasure.
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.34.6)
dadau daśa sutā dakṣo dharmāya vidhivanmune | trayodaśa kaśyapāya munaye trinavendave
O sage, Daksha duly gave ten daughters to Dharma, thirteen to the sage Kashyapa, and twenty-seven to the Moon.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.34.7)
bhūtāṅgiraḥ kṛśāśśvābhyāṁ dve dve putryau pradattavān | tārkṣyāya cāparāḥ kanyāḥ prasūtiprasavairyataḥ
He gave two daughters each to Bhuta, Angiras, and Krishashva, and the remaining daughters to Tarkshya — through whose offspring.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.34.8)
trilokāḥ pūritāstanno varṇyate vyāsato bhayāt
The three worlds became filled with their progeny — that account is not elaborated here, out of deference to Vyasa's design.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.34.9)
kecidvadanti tāṁ jyeṣṭhāṁ madhyamāṁ cāpare śivām | sarvānantarajāṁ kecitkalpabhedāt trayaṁ ca sat
Some say She was the eldest, others the middle, and some the youngest of all; owing to the difference of cosmic cycles, all three accounts are true.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.34.10)
anantaraṁ sutotpatteḥ sapatnīkaḥ prajāpatiḥ | dakṣo dadhau suprītyā tāṁ manasā jagadambikām
After the begetting of those daughters, Prajapati Daksha, together with his wife, meditated with great love in his mind upon the Mother of the Universe.
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.34.11)
ataḥ premṇā ca tuṣṭāva girā gadgadayā hi saḥ | bhūyo bhūyo namaskṛtya sāñjalirvinayānvitaḥ
Out of love, with a voice choked with emotion, he praised Her again and again, bowing repeatedly with joined palms in humility.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.34.12)
santuṣṭā sā tadā devī vicāraṁ manasīti ca | cakre'vatāraṁ vīriṇyāṁ kuryāṁ paṇavipūrtaye
The Goddess, then well pleased, resolved thus in Her mind: 'To fulfil Daksha's vow, I shall take incarnation through Virini.'
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.34.13)
atha sovāsa manasi dakṣasya jagadambikā | vilalāsa tadātīva sa dakṣo munisattama
Then the Mother of the Universe came to dwell in Daksha's mind, O best of sages, and at that Daksha rejoiced exceedingly.
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.34.14)
sumuhūrtena dakṣo'pi svapatnyāṁ nidadhe mudā | dakṣapatnyāstadā citte śivovāsa dayānvitā
In an auspicious moment, Daksha joyfully established that resolve in his wife, and then the compassionate Shiva came to dwell in his wife's heart.
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.34.15)
āvirbabhūva cihnāni dohadasyākhilāni vai
All the signs of a mother's pregnancy-longing manifested in full.
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.34.16)
vireje vīriṇī tāta hṛṣṭacittādhikaṁ ca sā | śivāvāsaprabhāvāttu mahāmaṅgalarūpiṇī
Dear one, Virini shone forth, her heart exceedingly joyful, radiant with the power of Shiva's indwelling, the very embodiment of great auspiciousness.
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.34.17)
kulasya sampradāyaiśca śruteścittasamunnateḥ | vyadhatta sukriyā dakṣaḥ prītyā puṁsavanādikāḥ
According to family custom and scriptural teaching, with an elevated heart, Daksha lovingly performed the pumsavana and other auspicious rites.
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.34.18)
utsavo'tīva sañjātastadā teṣu ca karmasu | vittaṁ dadau dvijātibhyo yathākāmaṁ prajāpatiḥ
A great festival then arose on the occasion of those rites; the Prajapati gave wealth to the twice-born as they desired.
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.34.19)
atha tasminnavasare sarve haryādayaḥ surāḥ | jñātvā garbhagatāṁ devīṁ vīriṇyāṁ te mudaṁ yayuḥ
On that occasion, Indra and all the gods, learning that the Goddess had come to dwell in Virini's womb, rejoiced greatly.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.34.20)
tatrāgatya ca sarve te tuṣṭuvurjagadambikām | lokopakārakariṇīṁ praṇamya ca muhurmuhuḥ
Coming there, all of them repeatedly bowed to and praised the Mother of the Universe, the benefactress of all worlds.
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.34.21)
kṛtvā tataste bahudhā praśaṁsāṁ hṛṣṭamānasāḥ | dakṣaprajāpateścaiva vīriṇyāḥ svagṛhaṁ yayuḥ
Then, having offered manifold praise with joyful hearts, they departed from the home of Daksha Prajapati and Virini, each to his own abode.
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.34.22)

O Narada, when nine months had passed and the customary worldly rites had been duly performed, in the full tenth month, that auspicious Goddess -
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.34.23)
āvirbabhūva purato mātuḥ sadyastadā mune | muhūrte sukhade candragrahatārānukūlake
appeared at once before Her mother, O sage, in an auspicious hour favorable in moon, planets, and stars.
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.34.24)
tasyāṁ tu jātamātrāyāṁ suprīto'sau prajāpatiḥ | śaivadevīti tāṁ mene dṛṣṭvā tāṁ tejasolbaṇām
As soon as She was born, the delighted Prajapati, seeing that supremely radiant child, recognized Her as the very Goddess Shiva.
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.34.25)
tadābhūtpuṣpasadvṛṣṭirmeghāśca vavṛṣurjalam | diśaḥ śāntā drutaṁ tasyāṁ jātāyāṁ ca munīśvara
O lord of sages, as soon as She was born, a fine shower of flowers fell, the clouds rained down water, and the directions grew calm at once.
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.34.26)
avādayanta tridaśāḥ śubhavādyāni khe gatāḥ | jajjvaluścāgnayaḥ śāntāḥ sarvamāsītsumaṅgalam
The gods, moving through the sky, sounded auspicious instruments; the fires blazed calmly, and everything became wholly auspicious.
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.34.27)
vīriṇīsambhavāṁ dṛṣṭvā dakṣastāṁ jagadambikām | namaskṛtya karau baddhvā bahu tuṣṭāva bhaktitaḥ
Seeing that Mother of the Universe born of Virini, Daksha bowed, joined his hands, and praised Her greatly with devotion.
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.34.28)
dakṣa uvāca | maheśāni namastubhyaṁ jagadambe sanātani | kṛpāṁ kuru mahādevi satye satyasvarūpiṇi
Daksha said: O Maheshani, O eternal Mother of the universe, salutations to You! O Mahadevi, Yourself the very form of Truth, show Your grace in truth.
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.34.29)

You who take the forms of rajas, sattva, and tamas, ever performing every task, the mother of the three gods — to You, the auspicious Goddess, I bow.
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.34.34)
yastvāṁ vicintayed devi vidyāvidyātmikāṁ parām | tasya bhuktiśca muktiśca sadā karatale sthitā
O Goddess, for one who meditates upon You, the supreme power of both knowledge and ignorance — for him, both worldly enjoyment and liberation ever rest within his grasp.
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.34.35)
yastvāṁ pratyakṣato devi śivāṁ paśyati pāvanīm | tasyāvaśyaṁ bhavenmuktirvidyāvidyāprakāśikā
O Goddess, one who directly beholds Your pure, auspicious form — for him liberation surely follows, for You illumine both knowledge and ignorance.
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.34.36)

O Mother of the world, those who praise You as Bhavani, as Ambika, as the pervader of the universe, and as Durga — for them everything shall come to pass.
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.34.37)
brahmovāca | iti stutā jaganmātā śivā dakṣeṇa dhīmatā | tathovāca tadā dakṣaṁ yathā mātā śṛṇoti na

sarvaṁ sammohya tathyaṁ ca tathā dakṣaḥ śṛṇotu tat | nānyastathā śivā prāha nānotiḥ parameśvarī
Casting Her power of illusion over all else, She spoke a true word meant for Daksha's ears alone; beyond this the Supreme Goddess Shiva said nothing that any other heard.
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.34.39)

The Goddess said: O Prajapati, formerly you worshipped Me for the sake of a daughter; your desire now stands fulfilled — continue henceforth to hold to your discipline.
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.34.40)
brahmovāca | evamuktvā tadā devī dakṣaṁ ca nijamāyayā | āsthāya śaiśavaṁ bhāvaṁ jananyante ruroda sā
Brahma said: Having spoken thus to Daksha, the Goddess then, by Her own Maya, assumed the state of infancy and, at Her mother's side, began to cry.
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.34.41)
atha tad rodanaṁ śrutvā striyo vākyaṁ sasambhramāḥ | āgatāstatra suprītyā dāsyo'pi ca sasambhramāḥ
Hearing that crying, the women of the household, in a flurry, and the maidservants too, in excitement, came there with great affection.
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.34.42)

A great festival arose with song and music; Daksha and Asikni were filled with joy at the sight of their daughter's auspicious face.
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.34.44)

dakṣaḥ śrutikulācāraṁ cakre ca vidhivattadā | dānaṁ dadau dvijātibhyo'nyebhyaśca draviṇaṁ tathā
Daksha then duly performed the family rites sanctioned by the scriptures, giving gifts to the twice-born and wealth to others as well.
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.34.45)
babhūva sarvato gānaṁ nartanaṁ ca yathocitam | nedurvādyāni bahuśaḥ sumaṅgalapuraḥsaram
Everywhere fitting song and dance took place; auspicious instruments resounded again and again.
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.34.46)

Then Indra and all the gods, together with their attendants, came with throngs of sages and duly celebrated the festival.
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.34.47)

dṛṣṭvā dakṣasutāmambāṁ jagataḥ parameśvarīm | nemuḥ savinayāḥ sarve tuṣṭuvuśca śubhaiḥ stavaiḥ
Seeing the Mother, Daksha's daughter, the Supreme Goddess of the world, all bowed humbly and praised Her with auspicious hymns.
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.34.48)
ūcuḥ sarve pramuditā giraṁ jayajayātmikām | praśaśaṁsurmudā dakṣaṁ vīriṇīṁ ca viśeṣataḥ
All, filled with delight, raised cries of victory, and joyfully praised Daksha and, in particular, Virini.
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.34.49)
tadometi nāma cakre tasyā dakṣastadājñayā | praśastāyāḥ sarvaguṇaiḥ sattvādapi mudānvitaḥ
Then, by his own resolve, Daksha gave Her the name 'Uma', for She, adorned with every virtue and with sattva, was full of joy.
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.34.50)
nāmānyanyāni tasyāstu paścājjātāni lokataḥ | mahāmaṅgaladānyeva duḥkhaghnāni viśeṣataḥ
The other names that later arose for Her through common usage are all bestowers of great auspiciousness, and especially destroyers of sorrow.
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.34.51)
dakṣastadā hariṁ natvā māṁ sarvānamarānapi | munīnapi karau baddhvā stutvā cānarca bhaktitaḥ
Daksha then, bowing to Hari, to me, and to all the immortals and sages, with joined hands, praised and worshipped them with devotion.
Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.34.52)
atha viṣṇvādayaḥ sarve supraśasyājanandanam | prītyā yayuḥ svadhāmāni saṁsmaran saśivaṁ śivam
Then Vishnu and all the gods, having greatly praised that daughter, and remembering both Shiva and Shambhu together, went with love to their own abodes.
Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.34.53)
atastāṁ ca sutāṁ mātā susaṁskṛtya yathocitam | śiśupānena vidhinā tasyai stanyādikaṁ dadau
After that, Her mother, having duly performed the proper purificatory rites for that daughter, gave Her milk and other nourishment according to the custom for infants.
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.34.54)

pālitā sātha vīriṇyā dakṣeṇa ca mahātmanā | vavṛdhe śuklapakṣasya yathā śaśikalānvaham
Thus nurtured by Virini and the great-souled Daksha, She grew day by day like the digits of the moon in its bright fortnight.
Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.34.55)
tasyāṁ tu sadguṇāḥ sarve viviśurdvijasattama | śaiśave'pi yathā candre kalāḥ sarvā manoharāḥ
O best of the twice-born, all good qualities entered into Her even in Her infancy, just as, in the young moon, all the lovely digits gradually enter.
Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.34.56)
ācarannijabhāvena sakhīmadhyagatā yadā | tadā lilekha bhargasya pratimāmanvahaṁ muhuḥ
When, following Her own natural disposition, She played among Her friends, She would again and again draw the image of Bhaga (Shiva).
Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.34.57)
yadā jagau sugītāni śivā bālyocitāni sā | tadā sthāṇuṁ haraṁ rudraṁ sasmāra smaraśāsanam
When that auspicious child sang sweet songs befitting Her infancy, She would remember Sthanu, Hara, Rudra — Shiva, the chastiser of Kama.
Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.34.58)
vavṛdhe'tīva dampatyoḥ pratyahaṁ karuṇātulā | tasyā bālye'pi bhaktāyāstayornityaṁ muhurmuhuḥ
Day by day the tender affection of that couple for Her grew beyond measure; even in Her childhood, out of devotion, She remained ever given to them both.
Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.34.59)
sarvabālaguṇākrāntāṁ sadā svālayakāriṇīm | toṣayāmāsa pitarau nityaṁ nityaṁ muhurmuhuḥ
Possessed of every childlike virtue, ever cherishing Her own home, that child, again and again, continually gladdened Her parents.
