Rudra Samhita · Chapter 35
The Nanda Vrata and the Hymn to Shiva
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.35.1)
brahmovāca | athaikadā pituḥ pārśve tiṣṭhantīṁ tāṁ satīmaham | tvayā saha mune'drākṣaṁ sārabhūtāṁ trilokake
Brahma said: Then once, O sage, I saw, together with you, that Sati standing by her father's side — the very essence of the three worlds.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.35.2)
pitrā namaskṛtaṁ vīkṣya satkṛtaṁ tvāṁ ca māṁ satī | praṇanāma mudā bhaktyā lokalīlānusāriṇī
Seeing her father honor us, and seeing us both revered, Sati, ever following the ways of the world in her play, bowed to us with joy and devotion.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.35.3)
praṇāmānte satīṁ vīkṣya dakṣadattaśubhāsane | sthito'haṁ nārada tvaṁ ca vinatāmahamāgadam
After that salutation, seeing Sati seated on the auspicious seat given by Daksha, O Narada, you and I sat down, and I said to that modest Sati -
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.35.4)
tvāmeva yaḥ kāmayate yaṁ tu kāmayase sati | tamāpnuhi patiṁ devaṁ sarvajñaṁ jagadīśvaram
'Whichever one desires only you, and whom you yourself desire, O Sati — may you attain that all-knowing lord, ruler of the universe, as your husband.'
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.35.5)
'One who has never taken another wife, does not take one now, nor ever will — may that one, unequalled by any, O auspicious one, become your husband.'
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.35.6)
ityuktvā suciraṁ tāṁ vai sthitvā dakṣālaye punaḥ | visṛṣṭau tena saṁyātau svasthānaṁ tau ca nārada
Having said this to her, and remaining a long while in Daksha's house, we two, on taking leave, then departed each to our own abode, O Narada.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.35.7)
dakṣo'bhavacca suprītastadākarṇya gatajvaraḥ | ādade tanayāṁ svāṁ tāṁ matvā hi parameśvarīm
Daksha, hearing this, became greatly pleased and freed from anxiety, and, regarding her as the very Supreme Goddess, took up the care of his daughter.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.35.8)
itthaṁ vihārai ruciraiḥ kaumārairbhaktavatsalā | jahāvavasthāṁ kaumārīṁ svecchādhṛtanarākṛtiḥ
Thus, through lovely girlhood pastimes, she who is dear to Her devotees, wearing by Her own will the form of a human being, passed through the state of maidenhood.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.35.9)
bālyaṁ vyatītya sā prāpa kiñcidyauvanatāṁ satī | atīva tapasāṅgena sarvāṅgeṣu manoharā
Having passed through childhood, Sati attained a touch of youth, and, through the power of Her austerity, became lovely in every limb.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.35.10)
dakṣastāṁ vīkṣya lokeśaḥ prodbhinnāntarvayaḥsthitām | cintayāmāsa bhargāya kathaṁ dāsya imāṁ sutām
Daksha, lord of the world, seeing his daughter thus grown, her inner maturity blossoming, pondered: 'How shall I give this daughter to Shiva?'
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.35.11)
atha sāpi svayaṁ bhargaṁ prāptumaicchattadānvaham | piturmanogatiṁ jñātvā māturnikaṭamāgatā
Then she herself, day after day, began to desire to attain Shiva of her own accord; learning her father's inner intent, she went near her mother.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.35.12)
papracchājñāṁ tapohetoḥ śaṅkarasya viśāladhīḥ | mātuḥ śivātha vīriṇyāḥ sā satī parameśvarī
That broad-minded Sati, the Supreme Goddess, asked her mother, the auspicious Virini, for permission to undertake austerity for Shankara's sake.
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.35.13)
tataḥ satī maheśānaṁ patiṁ prāptuṁ dṛḍhavratā | sā tamārādhayāmāsa gṛhe māturanujñayā
Then Sati, firm in her vow to attain Mahesha as her husband, with her mother's permission, began to worship him within the home.

With the various fruits, flowers, and grains available in that season, keeping strictly controlled diet, she performed the chanting and worship of Shiva throughout that month.

Thus, having completed the entire Nanda-vrata with utmost concentration, Sati, her mind fixed on nothing else, meditated upon Shiva with love and became steadfast.

Indra and all the other gods, as well as all the moving and unmoving worlds, are fashioned through the differentiation of name and form, from but a fragment of Your power.
Verse 60 (shiva.rudra.35.60)
yathārciṣo'gneḥ savituryānti niryānti vāsakṛt | gabhastayastathāyaṁ vai pravāho gauṇa ucyate
As the rays go forth and return from fire or from the sun, so too this flow of the world is said to be but a secondary manifestation of Your power.
Verse 61 (shiva.rudra.35.61)
na tvaṁ devo'suro martyo na tiryaṅ na dvijaḥ prabho | na strī na ṣaṇḍho na pumānsadasanna ca kiñcana
You are not a god, not a demon, not a mortal, not an animal, not a twice-born, O Lord; not a woman, not a eunuch, not a man; not being, not non-being, not anything at all.
Verse 62 (shiva.rudra.35.62)
niṣedhaśeṣaḥ sarvaṁ tvaṁ viśvakṛdviśvapālakaḥ | viśvalayakṛdviśvātmā praṇatāḥ smaḥ tamīśvaram
You are everything that remains after all such negation — the maker of the universe, its sustainer, its dissolver, the Self of the universe; we bow to that Lord.
Verse 63 (shiva.rudra.35.63)
yogarandhitakarmāṇo yaṁ prapaśyanti yoginaḥ | yogasambhāvite citte yogeśaṁ tvāṁ natā vayam
Whom the yogis, their actions burned away through yoga, behold directly in a mind made ready by yoga — to You, the Lord of Yoga, we bow.
Verse 64 (shiva.rudra.35.64)
namo'stu te'sahyavega śaktitraya trayīmaya | namaḥ prasannapālāya namaste bhūriśaktaye
Salutation to You, of irresistible force, embodied in the three Vedas, of threefold power; salutation to the gracious protector, salutation to You of abundant power.
Verse 65 (shiva.rudra.35.65)
kadindriyāṇāṁ durgeśānavāpya paravartmane | bhaktoddhāraratāyātha namaste gūḍhavarcase
To one who has crossed the impassable fortress of the senses and attained the supreme path, ever devoted to the deliverance of devotees, of hidden splendor — salutation to You.
Verse 66 (shiva.rudra.35.66)
yacchaktyāhandhiyātmānaṁ hanta veda na mūḍhadhīḥ | taṁ duratyayamāhātmyaṁ tvāṁ natāḥ smo mahāprabhum
By whose power even the deluded mind fails, alas, to know its own Self — to You, whose greatness none can surpass, the Great Lord, we bow.
Verse 67 (shiva.rudra.35.67)
brahmovāca | iti stutvā mahādevaṁ sarve viṣṇvādikāḥ surāḥ | tūṣṇīmāsanprabhoragre sadbhaktinatakandharāḥ
Brahma said: Thus, having praised the Great God, all the gods, Vishnu and the rest, stood silent before the Lord, their heads bowed in true devotion.
