Rudra Samhita · Chapter 36
Brahma and Vishnu's Prayer to Shiva
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.36.1)
brahmovāca | iti stutiṁ ca haryādikṛtāmākarṇya śaṅkaraḥ | babhūvātiprasanno hi vijahāsa ca sūtikṛt
Brahma said: Having heard that hymn made by Indra and the others, Shankara, the very cause of creation, became exceedingly pleased and smiled.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.36.2)
brahmaviṣṇū tu dṛṣṭvā tau sastrīkau saṅgatau haraḥ | yathocitaṁ samābhāṣya papracchāgamanaṁ tayoḥ
Seeing Brahma and Vishnu, both arrived together with their wives, Hara, after conversing fittingly with them, asked the reason for their coming.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.36.3)
rudra uvāca | he hare he vidhe devā munayaścādya nirbhayāḥ | nijāgamanahetuṁ hi kathayadhvaṁ sutattvataḥ
Rudra said: O Hari, O Vidhi, the gods and sages are all free from fear today; tell me truly the reason for your coming.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.36.4)
kimarthamāgatā yūyaṁ kiṁ kāryaṁ ceha vidyate | tatsarvaṁ śrotumicchāmi bhavatstutyā prasannadhīḥ
For what purpose have you come — what task is there here? My mind, pleased by your praise, wishes to hear all of it.
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.36.5)
brahmovāca | iti pṛṣṭe hareṇāhaṁ sarvalokapitāmahaḥ | mune'vocaṁ mahādevaṁ viṣṇunā paricoditaḥ
Brahma said: O sage, when Hara had thus asked, I, the grandfather of all worlds, urged on by Vishnu, spoke thus to Mahadeva -
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.36.6)
devadeva mahādeva karuṇāsāgara prabho | yadarthamāgatāvāvāṁ tacchṛṇu tvaṁ surarṣibhiḥ
O God of gods, Mahadeva, ocean of compassion, Lord! Hear, together with the divine sages, the reason for which we two have come.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.36.7)
viśeṣatastavaivārthamāgatā vṛṣabhadhvaja | sahārthinaḥ sadā yogyamanyathā na jagadbhavet
O bull-bannered one, we have come, in particular, for your own sake; petitioners are ever worthy of hearing — otherwise the world could not go on.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.36.8)
kecidbhaviṣyantyasurā mama vadhyā maheśvara | harervadhyāstathā kecidbhavantaścāpi kecana
O Maheshvara, some demons are destined to be slain by me, some by Hari, and some by you as well.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.36.9)
kecittvadvīryajātasya tanayasya mahāprabho | māyāvadhyāḥ prabho kecidbhaviṣyantyasurāḥ sadā
And some demons, O great Lord, shall ever be slain only through the power of Maya of a son born from your own vigor.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.36.10)
tavaiva kṛpayā śambhoḥ surāṇāṁ sukhamuttamam | nāśayitvāsurān ghorāñjagatsvāsthyaṁ sadābhayam
By your grace alone, O Shambhu, the terrible demons shall be destroyed, the gods shall gain supreme happiness, and the world shall attain ever-fearless well-being.
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.36.11)
yogayukte tvayi sadā rāgadveṣavivarjite | dayāmātraikanirate na vadhyā hyathavā tava
You, ever established in yoga, free from attachment and aversion, intent solely on compassion — their slaying is indeed not for you to undertake.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.36.12)
ārādhiteṣu teṣvīśa kathaṁ sṛṣṭistathā sthitiḥ | ataśca bhavitā yuktaṁ nityaṁ nityaṁ vṛṣadhvaja
O Ishvara, when those demons grow strong through boons, how then shall creation and preservation continue? Hence, O bull-bannered one, this shall be fitting, forever and ever.
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.36.13)
sṛṣṭisthityantakarmāṇi na kāryāṇi yadā tadā | śarīrabhedamasmākaṁ māyāyāśca na yujyate
When the tasks of creation, preservation, and destruction cannot be accomplished, a differentiation of our very bodies becomes necessary — not a matter of Maya alone.
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.36.14)
ekasvarūpā hi vayaṁ bhinnāḥ kāryasya bhedataḥ | kāryabhedo na siddhaścedrūpabhedo'prayojanaḥ
We are of one essential nature, yet appear distinct through the difference of function; if the difference of function is not established, the difference of form would be pointless.
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.36.15)
eka eva tridhā bhinnaḥ paramātmā maheśvaraḥ | māyāyāḥ kāraṇādeva svatantro līlayā prabhuḥ
The one Supreme Self, Maheshvara, becomes threefold by the very cause of Maya; the independent Lord does this through his own play.
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.36.16)
vāmāṅgajo haristasya dakṣiṇāṅgabhavo hyaham | śivasya hṛdayājjātastvaṁ hi pūrṇatanuḥ śivaḥ
Hari is born from his left side, and I from his right side; and you, O Shiva, born from Shiva's very heart, are his own full and undivided body.
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.36.17)
itthaṁ vayaṁ tridhā bhūtāḥ prabho bhinnasvarūpiṇaḥ | śivāśivasutāstattvaṁ hṛdā viddhi sanātana
Thus, O Lord, we three have become of differentiated form; yet, O eternal one, know in your heart that we are the sons of Shiva and Shakti, one in essential truth.
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.36.18)
ahaṁ viṣṇuśca sastrīkau sañjātau kāryahetutaḥ | lokakāryakarau prītyā tava śāsanataḥ prabho
I and Vishnu, both together with our wives, doing the work of the world with love at your command, have come here for the sake of a task.
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.36.19)
tasmādviśvahitārthāya surāṇāṁ sukhahetave | parigṛhṇīṣva bhāryārthe rāmāmekāṁ suśobhanām
Therefore, for the welfare of the universe and the happiness of the gods, accept for the purpose of a wife one lovely and gracious woman.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.36.20)
anyacchṛṇu maheśāna pūrvavṛttaṁ smṛtaṁ mayā | yanno puraḥ purā proktaṁ tvayaiva śivarūpiṇā
O Maheshana, hear also this: I recall a past event, which you yourself, in your form as Shiva, once told us before.
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.36.21)
madrūpaṁ paramaṁ brahmannīdṛśaṁ bhavadaṅgataḥ | prakaṭībhavitā loke nāmnā rudraḥ prakīrtitaḥ
'This supreme form of mine, O Brahman, of such a kind, shall become manifest from your own body in the world, celebrated by the name Rudra.'
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.36.22)
sṛṣṭikartābhavad brahmā hariḥ pālanakārakaḥ | layakārī bhaviṣyāmi rudrarūpo guṇākṛtiḥ
'Brahma shall become the creator, Hari the preserver; and I, in the form of Rudra, embodying that quality, shall become the destroyer.'
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.36.23)
striyaṁ vivāhya lokasya kariṣye kāryamuttamam | iti saṁsmṛtya svaproktaṁ pūrṇaṁ kuru nijaṁ paṇam
'Having married a woman, I shall accomplish the supreme task of the world' — recalling this word of your own, now fulfil your own pledge.
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.36.24)
nideśastava ca svāminnahaṁ sṛṣṭikaro hariḥ | pālako layahetustvamāvirbhūtaḥ svayaṁ śivaḥ
O Lord, it is by your own decree that I am the creator, Hari the preserver, and you, the cause of dissolution, have manifested yourself as Shiva.
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.36.25)
tvāṁ vinā na samarthau hi āvāṁ ca svasvakarmaṇi | lokakāryaratāṁ tasmādekāṁ gṛhṇīṣva kāminīm
Without you, neither of us two is capable of our own respective tasks; therefore, intent on the world's welfare, accept one beloved woman.
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.36.26)
yathā padmālayā viṣṇoḥ sāvitrī ca yathā mama | tathā sahacarīṁ śambho kāntāṁ gṛhṇīṣva samprati
Just as Padma is Vishnu's companion, and Savitri mine, so too, O Shambhu, now accept a beloved companion of your own.
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.36.27)
brahmovāca | iti śrutvā vaco me hi brahmaṇaḥ purato hareḥ | sa māṁ jagāda lokeśaḥ smerānanamukho haraḥ
Brahma said: Having heard these words of mine, spoken before Hari, that lord of the world, Hara, with a smiling face, said to me -
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.36.28)
īśvara uvāca | he brahman he hare me hi yuvāṁ priyatarau sadā | dṛṣṭvā vāṁ ca mamānando bhavatyatitarāṁ khalu
Ishvara said: O Brahma, O Hari, you two are ever dearest to me; seeing you both, my joy indeed becomes exceedingly great.
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.36.29)
yuvāṁ suraviśiṣṭau hi tribhuvasvāminau kila | kathanaṁ vāṁ gariṣṭheti bhavakāryaratātmanoḥ
You two, foremost among the gods, are indeed the lords of the three worlds; your very word, ever devoted to the world's welfare, is the weightiest.
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.36.30)
ucitaṁ na suraśreṣṭhau vivāhakaraṇaṁ mama | taporataviraktasya sadā viditayoginaḥ
O best of gods, it is not fitting for marriage to be performed by me, who am ever devoted to austerity, detached, and ever known as a yogi.
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.36.31)
yo nivṛttisumārgasthaḥ svātmārāmo nirañjanaḥ | avadhūtatanurjñānī svadraṣṭā kāmavarjitaḥ
I am established on the excellent path of renunciation, self-delighting, stainless, of the nature of an avadhuta, a knower, a seer of my own self, free from desire.
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.36.32)
avikārī hyabhogī ca sadāśuciramaṅgalaḥ | tasya prayojanaṁ loke kāminyā kiṁ vadādhunā
I am unchanging, without enjoyment, ever pure and auspicious — what use, then, has such a one for a wife in this world? Tell me now.
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.36.33)
kevalaṁ yogalagnasya mamānandaḥ sadāsti vai | jñānahīnastu puruṣo manute bahu kāmakam
For me, absorbed solely in yoga, bliss is ever present; only a man devoid of knowledge imagines much desire.
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.36.34)
vivāhakaraṇaṁ loke vijñeyaṁ parabandhanam | tasmāttasya rucirno me satyaṁ satyaṁ vadāmyaham
Marriage in this world is to be known as yet another bondage; therefore I have no liking for it — I speak the plain, plain truth.
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.36.35)
na svārthaṁ me pravṛttirhi samyak svārthavicintanāt | tathāpi tatkariṣyāmi bhavaduktaṁ jagaddhitam
My inclination is not for my own self-interest, since I have thoroughly considered where my true good lies; nevertheless, I shall do this world-benefiting thing you speak of.
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.36.36)
matvā vaco gariṣṭhaṁ vā nijoktiparipūrtaye | kariṣyāmi vivāhaṁ vai bhaktavaśyaḥ sadā hyaham
Considering your weighty word, and to fulfil my own former pledge, I shall indeed perform this marriage, for I am ever governed by my devotees.
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.36.37)
parantu yādṛśīṁ kāntāṁ grahīṣyāmi yathāpaṇam | tacchṛṇuṣva hare brahman yuktameva vaco mama
But hear this fitting condition of mine, O Hari, O Brahma, as to what sort of woman I shall accept according to my own pledge.
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.36.38)
yā me tejaḥ samarthā hi grahītuṁ syādvibhāgaśaḥ | tāṁ nideśaya bhāryārthe yoginīṁ kāmarūpiṇīm
Whoever is capable of receiving even a portion of my splendour — appoint her, a yogini of the very form of my own will, for the purpose of my wife.
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.36.39)
yogayukte mayi tathā yoginyeva bhaviṣyati | kāmāsakte mayi tathā kāminyeva bhaviṣyati
As I am established in yoga, so she too shall become a yogini; and were I attached to desire, she likewise would become a woman of desire.
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.36.40)
yamakṣaraṁ vedavido nigadanti manīṣiṇaḥ | jyotīrūpaṁ śivaṁ te ca cintayiṣye sanātanam
That imperishable one whom the Veda-knowing wise declare, that light-formed, eternal Shiva within myself, I shall contemplate.
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.36.41)
taccintāyāṁ yadāsakto brahman gacchāmi bhāvinīm | tatra yā vighnajananī na bhavitrī hatāstu me
O Brahman, absorbed in that very contemplation, I shall go to her who is to be my bride; whatever obstacle-creator there may be, let it be destroyed for my sake.
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.36.42)
tvaṁ vā viṣṇurahaṁ vāpi śivasya brahmarūpiṇaḥ | aṁśabhūtā mahābhāgā yogyaṁ tadanucintanam
Whether you, or Vishnu, or I — all are but great, blessed portions of Shiva in the form of Brahman; contemplation of that alone is fitting.
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.36.43)
taccintayā vinodvāhaṁ sthāsyāmi kamalāsana | tasmājjāyāṁ prādiśa tvaṁ matkarmānugatāṁ sadā
O lotus-seated one, through that very contemplation, without true bondage, I shall remain as I am; therefore appoint for me a wife who will ever follow my own conduct.
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.36.44)
tatrāpyekaṁ paṇaṁ me tvaṁ śṛṇu brahmam̐śca māṁ prati | aviśvāso madukte cenmayā tyaktā bhaviṣyati
O Brahman, hear one more condition of mine in this: should there ever be distrust of my word, I shall abandon her.
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.36.45)
brahmovāca | iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvāhaṁ sa viṣṇurharasya ca | sasmitaṁ moditamano'vocaṁ ceti vinamrakaḥ
Brahma said: Having heard those words of Hara, I, together with Vishnu, my mind delighted, smiling and bowing humbly, said this -
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.36.46)
śṛṇu nātha maheśāna mārgitā yādṛśī tvayā | nivedayāmi suprītyā tāṁ striyaṁ tādṛśīṁ prabho
Hear, O Lord, O Mahesha: the very kind of woman you have described — I now joyfully declare to you one of that very kind.
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.36.47)
umā sā bhinnarūpeṇa sañjātā kāryasādhinī | sarasvatī tathā lakṣmīrdvidhārūpā purā prabho
Uma Herself, in a differentiated form, has come forth to accomplish this task; and from Her, in ancient times, Sarasvati and Lakshmi arose in twofold form.
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.36.48)
padmā kāntābhavadviṣṇostathā mama sarasvatī | tṛtīyarūpā sā no'bhūllokakāryahitaiṣiṇī
Padma became the beloved of Vishnu, and Sarasvati mine; and Her third form became ours, ever wishing the welfare of the world's affairs.
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.36.49)
dakṣasya tanayā yābhūtsatī nāmnā tu sā vibho | saivedṛśī bhavedbhāryā bhaveddhi hitakāriṇī
O Lord, she who became the daughter of Daksha, named Sati — she alone is fit to be such a wife, for she alone shall bring about your welfare.
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.36.50)
sā tapasyati deveśa tvadarthaṁ hi dṛḍhavratā | tvāṁ patiṁ prāptukāmā vai mahātejovatī satī
O Lord of gods, that very Sati, firm in her vow, is performing austerity for your sake, desiring to attain you as her husband — she of the greatest splendour.
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.36.51)
dātuṁ gaccha varaṁ tasyai kṛpāṁ kuru maheśvara | tāṁ vivāhaya suprītyā varaṁ dattvā ca tādṛśam
O Maheshvara, go and grant her this boon, show her grace; having granted such a boon, marry her with love.
Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.36.52)
harermama ca devānāmiyaṁ vāñchāsti śaṅkara | paripūraya saddṛṣṭyā paśyāmotsavamādarāt
O Shankara, this is the wish of Hari, of me, and of the gods; fulfil it with a gracious glance — let us behold the festivity with reverence.
Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.36.53)
maṅgalaṁ paramaṁ bhūyāt trilokeṣu sukhāvaham | sarvajvaro vinaśyed vai sarveṣāṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ
From this, supreme auspiciousness, bringing happiness to the three worlds, shall arise; without doubt, all affliction shall be destroyed for everyone.
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.36.54)
athavāsmadvacaḥśeṣe'vadattaṁ madhusūdanaḥ | līlājākṛtimīśānaṁ bhaktavatsalamacyutaḥ
Then, before our words were even finished, Madhusudana — Achyuta, ever fond of his devotees — spoke to Ishana, whose very form is born of his own divine play -
Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.36.55)
viṣṇuruvāca | devadeva mahādeva karuṇākara śaṅkara | yaduktaṁ brahmaṇā sarvaṁ maduktaṁ tanna saṁśayaḥ
Vishnu said: O God of gods, Mahadeva, ocean of mercy, Shankara! Whatever has been said by Brahma, know all of it to be my word as well; have no doubt of this.
Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.36.56)
tatkuruṣva maheśāna kṛpāṁ kṛtvā mamopari | sanāthaṁ kuru saddṛṣṭyā trilokaṁ suvivāhya tām
O Maheshana, do so; showing grace upon me, marry her with a gracious glance and grant the three worlds a true protector.
Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.36.57)
brahmovāca | ityuktvā bhagavān viṣṇuḥ tūṣṇīmāsa mune sudhīḥ | tathāstviti vihasyāha sa prabhurbhaktavatsalaḥ
Brahma said: Having said this, the wise, glorious Vishnu fell silent; and the Lord, ever fond of his devotees, laughing, said, 'So be it.'
Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.36.58)
tatastvāvāṁ ca samprāpya cājñāṁ sa munibhiḥ suraiḥ | agacchāva sveṣṭadeśaṁ sastrīkau paraharṣitau
Then, having obtained his leave, we two, with our wives, together with the sages and gods, filled with great joy, went each to our desired place.
