Sati Obtains Her Boon

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.37.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्त्वा सर्वदेवैश्च कृता शम्भोर्नुतिः परा । शिवाच्च सा वरं प्राप्ता शृणु ह्यादरतो मुने

brahmovāca | ityuktvā sarvadevaiśca kṛtā śambhornutiḥ parā | śivācca sā varaṁ prāptā śṛṇu hyādarato mune

Brahma said: Having spoken thus, and after the supreme praise of Shambhu offered by all the gods, she obtained her boon from Shiva — hear this reverently, O sage.

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.37.2)

अथो सती पुनः शुक्लपक्षेऽष्टम्यामुपोषिता । आश्विने मासि सर्वेशं पूजयामास भक्तितः

atho satī punaḥ śuklapakṣe'ṣṭamyāmupoṣitā | āśvine māsi sarveśaṁ pūjayāmāsa bhaktitaḥ

Then Sati, again observing a fast on the bright eighth of the month Ashvina, worshipped the Lord of all with devotion.

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.37.3)

इति नन्दाव्रते पूर्णे नवम्यां दिनभागतः । तस्यास्तु ध्यानमग्नायाः प्रत्यक्षमभवद् हरः

iti nandāvrate pūrṇe navamyāṁ dinabhāgataḥ | tasyāstu dhyānamagnāyāḥ pratyakṣamabhavad haraḥ

Thus, when the Nanda-vrata was completed, on the ninth day, Hara became directly visible before Sati, whose mind was absorbed in meditation.

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.37.4)

सर्वाङ्गसुन्दरो गौरः पञ्चवक्त्रस्त्रिलोचनः । चन्द्रभालः प्रसन्नात्मा शितिकण्ठश्चतुर्भुजः

sarvāṅgasundaro gauraḥ pañcavaktrastrilocanaḥ | candrabhālaḥ prasannātmā śitikaṇṭhaścaturbhujaḥ

He was fair and beautiful in every limb, five-faced, three-eyed, moon-crowned, serene of soul, blue-throated, and four-armed.

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.37.5)

त्रिशूलब्रह्मकवराभयधृग्भस्मभास्वरः । स्वर्धुन्या विलसच्छीर्षः सकलाङ्गमनोहरः

triśūlabrahmakavarābhayadhṛgbhasmabhāsvaraḥ | svardhunyā vilasacchīrṣaḥ sakalāṅgamanoharaḥ

Bearing the trident, his matted locks like a crown, showing the gesture of fearlessness, radiant with sacred ash, his head adorned with the play of the celestial Ganga, lovely in every limb.

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.37.6)

महालावण्यधामा च कोटिचन्द्रसमाननः । कोटिस्मरसमा कान्तिः सर्वथा स्त्रीप्रियाकृतिः

mahālāvaṇyadhāmā ca koṭicandrasamānanaḥ | koṭismarasamā kāntiḥ sarvathā strīpriyākṛtiḥ

He was the very abode of great beauty, his face like ten million moons, his radiance equal to ten million Kamadevas, in every way of a form dear to women.

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.37.7)

प्रत्यक्षतो हरं वीक्ष्य सती सेदृग्विधं प्रभुम् । ववन्दे चरणौ तस्य सुलज्जावनतानना

pratyakṣato haraṁ vīkṣya satī sedṛgvidhaṁ prabhum | vavande caraṇau tasya sulajjāvanatānanā

Seeing that lord of such a form directly before her, Sati, her face bent low in shy modesty, bowed at his feet.

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.37.8)

अथ प्राह महादेवः सतीं तद्व्रतधारिणीम् । तामिच्छन्नपि भार्यार्थं तपश्चर्याफलप्रदः

atha prāha mahādevaḥ satīṁ tadvratadhāriṇīm | tāmicchannapi bhāryārthaṁ tapaścaryāphalapradaḥ

Then Mahadeva, the bestower of the fruit of austerity, though himself desiring her as his wife, spoke to Sati, who held that vow.

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.37.9)

महादेव उवाच । दक्षनन्दिनि प्रीतोऽस्मि व्रतेनानेन सुव्रते । वरं वरय सन्दास्ये यत्तवाभिमतं भवेत्

mahādeva uvāca | dakṣanandini prīto'smi vratenānena suvrate | varaṁ varaya sandāsye yattavābhimataṁ bhavet

Mahadeva said: O daughter of Daksha, O one of excellent vows, I am pleased by this observance; ask for a boon, and I shall grant whatever is dear to your heart.

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.37.10)

ब्रह्मोवाच । जानन्नपीह तद्भावं महादेवो जगत्पतिः । जगौ वरं वृणीष्वेति तद्वाक्यश्रवणेच्छया

brahmovāca | jānannapīha tadbhāvaṁ mahādevo jagatpatiḥ | jagau varaṁ vṛṇīṣveti tadvākyaśravaṇecchayā

Brahma said: Mahadeva, the lord of the world, though himself knowing her inner feeling, spoke, saying 'Choose a boon,' out of a wish to hear her own words.

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.37.11)

सापि त्रपावशा युक्ता वक्तुं नो हृदि यत्स्थितम् । शशाक सा त्वभीष्टं यत्तल्लज्जाच्छादितं पुनः

sāpi trapāvaśā yuktā vaktuṁ no hṛdi yatsthitam | śaśāka sā tvabhīṣṭaṁ yattallajjācchāditaṁ punaḥ

She too, overcome with shyness, was unable to speak what lay in her heart; that cherished desire of hers remained once more veiled by her modesty.

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.37.12)

प्रेममग्नाभवत्साति श्रुत्वा शिववचः प्रियम् । तज्ज्ञात्वा सुप्रसन्नोऽभूच्छङ्करो भक्तवत्सलः

premamagnābhavatsāti śrutvā śivavacaḥ priyam | tajjñātvā suprasanno'bhūcchaṅkaro bhaktavatsalaḥ

Sati became immersed in love upon hearing Shiva's dear words; and Shankara, ever fond of his devotees, understanding this, became greatly pleased.

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.37.13)

वरं ब्रूहि वरं ब्रूहि प्राहेति स पुनर्द्रुतम् । सतीभक्तिवशः शम्भुरन्तर्यामी सतां गतिः

varaṁ brūhi varaṁ brūhi prāheti sa punardrutam | satībhaktivaśaḥ śambhurantaryāmī satāṁ gatiḥ

Shambhu, the inner controller, the refuge of the virtuous, governed by devotion to Sati, again quickly said, 'Speak your boon, speak your boon.'

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.37.14)

अथ त्रपां स्वां सन्धाय यदा प्राह हरं सती । यथेष्टं देहि वरद वरमित्यनिवारकम्

atha trapāṁ svāṁ sandhāya yadā prāha haraṁ satī | yatheṣṭaṁ dehi varada varamityanivārakam

Then, mustering her own modesty, when Sati said to Hara, 'O bestower of boons, grant me, without denial, whatever I desire' -

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.37.15)

तदा वाक्यस्यावसानमनवेक्ष्य वृषध्वजः । भव त्वं मम भार्येति प्राह तां भक्तवत्सलः

tadā vākyasyāvasānamanavekṣya vṛṣadhvajaḥ | bhava tvaṁ mama bhāryeti prāha tāṁ bhaktavatsalaḥ

- the bull-bannered one, without even waiting for the end of her sentence, ever fond of his devotees, said to her, 'Become my wife.'

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.37.16)

एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य साभीष्टफलभावनम् । तूष्णीं तस्थौ प्रमुदिता वरं प्राप्य मनोगतम्

etacchrutvā vacastasya sābhīṣṭaphalabhāvanam | tūṣṇīṁ tasthau pramuditā varaṁ prāpya manogatam

Hearing this word of his, which brought about her own cherished desire, she, having obtained the boon her heart desired, stood silent, filled with delight.

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.37.17)

सकामस्य हरस्याग्रे स्थिता सा चारुहासिनी । अकरोन्निजभावांश्च हावान्कामविवर्धनान्

sakāmasya harasyāgre sthitā sā cāruhāsinī | akaronnijabhāvāṁśca hāvānkāmavivardhanān

She of the lovely smile, standing before Hara who was himself now filled with desire, displayed her own natural feelings and gestures that increased passion.

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.37.18)

ततो भावान्समादाय शृङ्गाराख्यो रसस्तदा । तयोश्चित्ते विवेशाशु कला हावा यथोदितम्

tato bhāvānsamādāya śṛṅgārākhyo rasastadā | tayościtte viveśāśu kalā hāvā yathoditam

Then, taking up those feelings, the rasa called Shringara at once entered into the hearts of both of them, with all its graces and gestures, just as it had arisen.

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.37.19)

तत्प्रवेशात्तु देवर्षे लोकलीलानुसारिणोः । काप्यभिख्या तयोरासीच्चित्राचन्द्रमसोर्यथा

tatpraveśāttu devarṣe lokalīlānusāriṇoḥ | kāpyabhikhyā tayorāsīccitrācandramasoryathā

O sage among gods, through that entering, of those two who follow the ways of worldly play, there arose some indescribable radiance, as of a moon in a painting.

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.37.20)

रेजे सती हरं प्राप्य स्निग्धभिन्नाञ्जनप्रभा । चन्द्राभ्याशेऽभ्रलेखेव स्फटिकोज्ज्वलवर्ष्मणः

reje satī haraṁ prāpya snigdhabhinnāñjanaprabhā | candrābhyāśe'bhralekheva sphaṭikojjvalavarṣmaṇaḥ

Sati, having attained Hara, shone forth, her lustrous complexion like fresh collyrium, as if a streak of cloud beside the moon, whose form gleamed like crystal.

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.37.21)

अथ सा तमुवाचेदं हरं दाक्षायणी मुहुः । सुप्रसन्ना करौ बद्ध्वा नतका भक्तवत्सलम्

atha sā tamuvācedaṁ haraṁ dākṣāyaṇī muhuḥ | suprasannā karau baddhvā natakā bhaktavatsalam

Then that daughter of Daksha, well pleased, with joined hands and bowed head, spoke again and again to Hara, ever fond of his devotees.

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.37.22)

सत्युवाच । देवदेव महादेव विवाहविधिना प्रभो । पितुर्मे गोचरीकृत्य मां गृहाण जगत्पते

satyuvāca | devadeva mahādeva vivāhavidhinā prabho | piturme gocarīkṛtya māṁ gṛhāṇa jagatpate

Sati said: O God of gods, Mahadeva, Lord! According to the rite of marriage, having made me known to my father, accept me, O Lord of the world.

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.37.23)

ब्रह्मोवाच । एवं सतीवचः श्रुत्वा महेशो भक्तवत्सलः । तथास्त्विति वचः प्राह निरीक्ष्य प्रेमतश्च ताम्

brahmovāca | evaṁ satīvacaḥ śrutvā maheśo bhaktavatsalaḥ | tathāstviti vacaḥ prāha nirīkṣya premataśca tām

Brahma said: Hearing these words of Sati, Mahesha, ever fond of his devotees, gazing upon her with love, said, 'So be it.'

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.37.24)

दाक्षायण्यपि तं नत्वा शम्भुं विज्ञाप्य भक्तितः । प्राप्ताज्ञा मातुरभ्याशमगान्मोहमुदान्विता

dākṣāyaṇyapi taṁ natvā śambhuṁ vijñāpya bhaktitaḥ | prāptājñā māturabhyāśamagānmohamudānvitā

The daughter of Daksha too, having bowed to Shambhu and, with devotion, made her request, and having received his leave, went, filled with love-struck delight, to her mother's presence.

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.37.25)

हरोऽपि हिमवत्प्रस्थं प्रविश्य च निजाश्रमम् । दाक्षायणीवियोगाद्वै कृच्छ्रं ध्यानपरोऽभवत्

haro'pi himavatprasthaṁ praviśya ca nijāśramam | dākṣāyaṇīviyogādvai kṛcchraṁ dhyānaparo'bhavat

Hara too, entering his own hermitage on the slope of the Himalaya, on account of separation from the daughter of Daksha, became with difficulty absorbed in meditation.

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.37.26)

समाधाय मनः शम्भुर्लौकिकीं गतिमाश्रितः । चिन्तयामास देवर्षे मनसा मां वृषध्वजः

samādhāya manaḥ śambhurlaukikīṁ gatimāśritaḥ | cintayāmāsa devarṣe manasā māṁ vṛṣadhvajaḥ

O sage among gods, composing his mind and resorting to a worldly course of action, Shambhu, the bull-bannered one, thought of me in his mind.

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.37.27)

ततः सञ्चिन्त्यमानोऽहं महेशेन त्रिशूलिना । पुरस्तात्प्राविशत्तूर्णं हरसिद्धिप्रचोदितः

tataḥ sañcintyamāno'haṁ maheśena triśūlinā | purastātprāviśattūrṇaṁ harasiddhipracoditaḥ

Then I, thus thought of by Mahesha the trident-bearer, urged on by Hara's own accomplishing power, entered swiftly into his presence.

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.37.28)

यत्रासौ हिमवत्प्रस्थे तद्वियोगी हरः स्थितः । सरस्वतीयुतस्तात तत्रैव समुपस्थितः

yatrāsau himavatprasthe tadviyogī haraḥ sthitaḥ | sarasvatīyutastāta tatraiva samupasthitaḥ

Dear one, where Hara, separated from her, stood on the Himalayan slope, there, together with Sarasvati, I too arrived.

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.37.29)

सरस्वतीयुतं मां च देवर्षे वीक्ष्य स प्रभुः । उत्सुकः प्रेमबद्धश्च सत्या शम्भुरुवाच ह

sarasvatīyutaṁ māṁ ca devarṣe vīkṣya sa prabhuḥ | utsukaḥ premabaddhaśca satyā śambhuruvāca ha

O sage among gods, seeing me together with Sarasvati, that Lord Shambhu, eager and bound by love for Sati, spoke thus.

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.37.30)

शम्भुरुवाच । अहं ब्रह्मन्स्वार्थपरः परिग्रहकृतौ च यत् । तदा स्वत्वमिव स्वार्थे प्रतिभाति ममाधुना

śambhuruvāca | ahaṁ brahmansvārthaparaḥ parigrahakṛtau ca yat | tadā svatvamiva svārthe pratibhāti mamādhunā

Shambhu said: O Brahman, though I am one intent upon my own good, in this matter of taking a wife, it now seems to me as though my own true interest lies precisely there.

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.37.31)

अहमाराधितः सत्या दाक्षायण्याथ भक्तितः । तस्यै वरो मया दत्तो नन्दाव्रतप्रभावतः

ahamārādhitaḥ satyā dākṣāyaṇyātha bhaktitaḥ | tasyai varo mayā datto nandāvrataprabhāvataḥ

I was worshipped with devotion by Sati, the daughter of Daksha, and, through the power of the Nanda-vrata, I granted her a boon.

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.37.32)

भर्ता भवेति च तया मत्तो ब्रह्मन् वरो वृतः । मम भार्या भवेत्युक्तं मया तुष्टेन सर्वथा

bhartā bhaveti ca tayā matto brahman varo vṛtaḥ | mama bhāryā bhavetyuktaṁ mayā tuṣṭena sarvathā

O Brahman, 'Become my husband' — this boon was chosen from me by her; and I, altogether pleased, said, 'Let her become my wife.'

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.37.33)

अथावदत्तदा मां सा सती दाक्षायणी त्विति । पितुर्मे गोचरीकृत्य मां गृहाण जगत्पते

athāvadattadā māṁ sā satī dākṣāyaṇī tviti | piturme gocarīkṛtya māṁ gṛhāṇa jagatpate

Then that Sati, the daughter of Daksha, said to me: 'Having made me known to my father, accept me, O Lord of the world.'

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.37.34)

तदप्यङ्गीकृतं ब्रह्मन्मया तद्भक्तितुष्टितः । सा गता भवनं मातुरहमत्रागतो विधे

tadapyaṅgīkṛtaṁ brahmanmayā tadbhaktituṣṭitaḥ | sā gatā bhavanaṁ māturahamatrāgato vidhe

O Brahman, pleased by her devotion, I accepted that too; she went to her mother's home, and I came here, O Creator.

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.37.35)

तस्मात्त्वं गच्छ भवनं दक्षस्य मम शासनात् । तां दक्षोऽपि यथा कन्यां दद्यान्मेऽरं तथा वद

tasmāttvaṁ gaccha bhavanaṁ dakṣasya mama śāsanāt | tāṁ dakṣo'pi yathā kanyāṁ dadyānme'raṁ tathā vada

Therefore, at my command, go to Daksha's home, and speak in such a way that Daksha may give me his daughter without delay.

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.37.36)

सतीवियोगभङ्गः स्याद्यथा मे त्वं तथा कुरु । समाश्वासय तं दक्षं सर्वविद्याविशारदः

satīviyogabhaṅgaḥ syādyathā me tvaṁ tathā kuru | samāśvāsaya taṁ dakṣaṁ sarvavidyāviśāradaḥ

Do as will bring an end to my separation from Sati; console that Daksha, you who are versed in every learning.

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.37.37)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युदीर्य महादेवः सकाशे मे प्रजापतेः । सरस्वतीं विलोक्याशु वियोगवशगोऽभवत्

brahmovāca | ityudīrya mahādevaḥ sakāśe me prajāpateḥ | sarasvatīṁ vilokyāśu viyogavaśago'bhavat

Brahma said: Having said this, Mahadeva, gazing upon Sarasvati in my presence, at once fell into the grip of that very separation.

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.37.38)

तेनाहमपि चाज्ञप्तः कृतकृत्यो मुदान्वितः । प्रावोचं चेति जगतां नाथं तं भक्तवत्सलम्

tenāhamapi cājñaptaḥ kṛtakṛtyo mudānvitaḥ | prāvocaṁ ceti jagatāṁ nāthaṁ taṁ bhaktavatsalam

Being thus commanded by him, I too, my task fulfilled, filled with great joy, spoke thus to that Lord of the worlds, ever fond of his devotees.

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.37.39)

ब्रह्मोवाच यदात्थ भगवन् शम्भो तद्विचार्य सुनिश्चितम् । मुख्यः स्वार्थो हि देवानां ममापि वृषभध्वज

brahmovāca yadāttha bhagavan śambho tadvicārya suniścitam | mukhyaḥ svārtho hi devānāṁ mamāpi vṛṣabhadhvaja

Brahma said: O Blessed Shambhu, having well considered what you have said, this indeed is the chief self-interest of the gods, and of me too, O bull-bannered one.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.37.40)

दक्षस्तुभ्यं सुतां स्वां च स्वयमेव प्रदास्यति । अहं चापि वदिष्यामि त्वद्वाक्यं तत्समक्षतः

dakṣastubhyaṁ sutāṁ svāṁ ca svayameva pradāsyati | ahaṁ cāpi vadiṣyāmi tvadvākyaṁ tatsamakṣataḥ

Daksha shall himself, of his own accord, give you his daughter; and I too shall speak your very words in his presence.

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.37.41)

ब्रह्मोवाच इत्युदीर्य महादेवमहं सर्वेश्वरं प्रभुम् । अगमं दक्षनिलयं स्यन्दनेनातिवेगिना

brahmovāca ityudīrya mahādevamahaṁ sarveśvaraṁ prabhum | agamaṁ dakṣanilayaṁ syandanenātiveginā

Brahma said: Having said this to Mahadeva, the Lord of all, I went to Daksha's abode in an exceedingly swift chariot.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.37.42)

नारद उवाच । विधे प्राज्ञ महाभाग वद नो वदतां वर । सत्यै गृहागतायै स दक्षः किमकरोत्ततः

nārada uvāca | vidhe prājña mahābhāga vada no vadatāṁ vara | satyai gṛhāgatāyai sa dakṣaḥ kimakarottataḥ

Narada said: O wise, greatly fortunate Creator, best of speakers, tell us — what did Daksha then do when Sati came home?

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.37.43)

ब्रह्मोवाच । तपस्तप्त्वा वरं प्राप्य मनोऽभिलषितं सती । गृहं गत्वा पितुर्मातुः प्रणाममकरोत्तदा

brahmovāca | tapastaptvā varaṁ prāpya mano'bhilaṣitaṁ satī | gṛhaṁ gatvā piturmātuḥ praṇāmamakarottadā

Brahma said: Having performed her austerity and obtained the boon her heart desired, Sati went home and bowed to her mother and father.

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.37.44)

मात्रे पित्रेऽथ तत्सर्वं समाचख्यौ महेश्वरात् । वरप्राप्तिः स्वसख्या वै सत्यास्तुष्टात्तु भक्तितः

mātre pitre'tha tatsarvaṁ samācakhyau maheśvarāt | varaprāptiḥ svasakhyā vai satyāstuṣṭāttu bhaktitaḥ

She then related to her mother and father the whole matter of the boon obtained from Maheshvara, while her own dear friend too, pleased at Sati's devotion, confirmed it.

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.37.45)

माता पिता च वृत्तान्तं सर्वं श्रुत्वा सखीमुखात् । आनन्दं परमं लेभे चक्रे च परमोत्सवम्

mātā pitā ca vṛttāntaṁ sarvaṁ śrutvā sakhīmukhāt | ānandaṁ paramaṁ lebhe cakre ca paramotsavam

Her mother and father, having heard the entire account from the mouth of that friend, attained supreme joy and celebrated a great festival.

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.37.46)

द्रव्यं ददौ द्विजातिभ्यो यथाभीष्टमुदारधीः । अन्येभ्यश्चान्धदीनेभ्यो वीरिणी च महामनाः

dravyaṁ dadau dvijātibhyo yathābhīṣṭamudāradhīḥ | anyebhyaścāndhadīnebhyo vīriṇī ca mahāmanāḥ

The noble-minded Virini gave wealth to the twice-born as they wished, and gave gifts to others as well — the blind and the destitute.

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.37.47)

वीरिणी तां समालिङ्ग्य स्वसुतां प्रीतिवर्द्धिनीम् । मूर्ध्न्युपाघ्राय मुदिता प्रशशंशुर्मुहुर्मुहुः

vīriṇī tāṁ samāliṅgya svasutāṁ prītivarddhinīm | mūrdhnyupāghrāya muditā praśaśaṁśurmuhurmuhuḥ

Virini, embracing her own daughter, the increaser of love, joyfully smelling her head in blessing, praised her again and again.

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.37.48)

अथ दक्षः कियत्काले व्यतीते धर्मवित्तमः । चिन्तयामास देयेयं स्वसुता शम्भवे कथम्

atha dakṣaḥ kiyatkāle vyatīte dharmavittamaḥ | cintayāmāsa deyeyaṁ svasutā śambhave katham

Then, after some time had passed, Daksha, most learned in dharma, began to consider: 'How shall I give this daughter of mine to Shambhu?'

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.37.49)

आगतोऽपि महादेवः प्रसन्नः स जगाम ह । पुनरेव कथं सोऽपि सुतार्थेऽत्रागमिष्यति

āgato'pi mahādevaḥ prasannaḥ sa jagāma ha | punareva kathaṁ so'pi sutārthe'trāgamiṣyati

'Even though Mahadeva himself came here, pleased, and departed — how indeed will he come here again of his own accord for my daughter's sake?'

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.37.50)

प्रस्थाप्योऽथ मया कश्चिच्छम्भोर्निकटमञ्जसा । नैतद्योग्यं न गृह्णीयाद्यद्येवं विफलार्दना

prasthāpyo'tha mayā kaścicchambhornikaṭamañjasā | naitadyogyaṁ na gṛhṇīyādyadyevaṁ viphalārdanā

'If I quickly send someone to Shambhu's presence now, it would not be fitting; should he not accept it, it would be a fruitless affliction.'

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.37.51)

अथवा पूजयिष्यामि तमेव वृषभध्वजम् । मदीयतनया भक्त्या स्वयमेव यथा भवेत्

athavā pūjayiṣyāmi tameva vṛṣabhadhvajam | madīyatanayā bhaktyā svayameva yathā bhavet

'Or rather, I myself shall worship that very bull-bannered one, so that, through my own daughter's devotion, this matter may come about of itself.'

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.37.52)

तयैव पूजितः सोऽपि वाञ्छत्यार्यप्रयत्नतः । शम्भुर्भवतु मद्भर्तेत्येवं दत्तवरेण तत्

tayaiva pūjitaḥ so'pi vāñchatyāryaprayatnataḥ | śambhurbhavatu madbhartetyevaṁ dattavareṇa tat

'Worshipped by her alone, he too, through noble effort, will himself desire, 'Let Shambhu become my husband' — and, granting such a boon, that matter shall be accomplished.'

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.37.53)

इति चिन्तयतस्तस्य दक्षस्य पुरतोऽन्वहम् । उपस्थितोऽहं सहसा सरस्वत्यन्वितस्तदा

iti cintayatastasya dakṣasya purato'nvaham | upasthito'haṁ sahasā sarasvatyanvitastadā

While Daksha was thus pondering day after day, I, together with Sarasvati, suddenly appeared before him at that very time.

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.37.54)

मां दृष्ट्वा पितरं दक्षः प्रणम्यावनतः स्थितः । आसनं च ददौ मह्यं स्वभवाय यथोचितम्

māṁ dṛṣṭvā pitaraṁ dakṣaḥ praṇamyāvanataḥ sthitaḥ | āsanaṁ ca dadau mahyaṁ svabhavāya yathocitam

Seeing me, his father, Daksha stood bowed in reverence, and gave me, as was fitting for his household, a seat.

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.37.55)

ततो मां सर्वलोकेशं तत्रागमनकारणम् । दक्षः पप्रच्छ स क्षिप्रं चिन्ताविष्टोऽपि हर्षितः

tato māṁ sarvalokeśaṁ tatrāgamanakāraṇam | dakṣaḥ papraccha sa kṣipraṁ cintāviṣṭo'pi harṣitaḥ

Then Daksha, though filled with anxious thought yet delighted, quickly asked me, the lord of all worlds, the reason for my coming there.

Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.37.56)

दक्ष उवाच । तवात्रागमने हेतुः कः प्रवेशे स सृष्टिकृत् । ममोपरि सुप्रसादं कृत्वाचक्ष्व जगद्गुरो

dakṣa uvāca | tavātrāgamane hetuḥ kaḥ praveśe sa sṛṣṭikṛt | mamopari suprasādaṁ kṛtvācakṣva jagadguro

Daksha said: O creator of the universe, what is the reason for your coming here? Show your grace upon me, O teacher of the world, and tell me.

Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.37.57)

पुत्रस्नेहात्कार्यवशादथवा लोककारक । ममाश्रमं समायातो हृष्टस्य तव दर्शनात्

putrasnehātkāryavaśādathavā lokakāraka | mamāśramaṁ samāyāto hṛṣṭasya tava darśanāt

O maker of the worlds, have you come to my hermitage out of love for your son, or on account of some task? I am delighted at the very sight of you.

Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.37.58)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इति पृष्टः स्वपुत्रेण दक्षेण मुनिसत्तम । विहसन्नब्रुवं वाक्यं मोदयंस्तं प्रजापतिम्

brahmovāca | iti pṛṣṭaḥ svaputreṇa dakṣeṇa munisattama | vihasannabruvaṁ vākyaṁ modayaṁstaṁ prajāpatim

Brahma said: O best of sages, thus questioned by my own son Daksha, I, smiling, spoke words that gladdened that Prajapati.

Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.37.59)

ब्रह्मोवाच शृणु दक्ष यदर्थं त्वत्समीपमहमागतः । त्वत्तो कस्य हितं मेऽपि भवतोऽपि तदीप्सितम्

brahmovāca śṛṇu dakṣa yadarthaṁ tvatsamīpamahamāgataḥ | tvatto kasya hitaṁ me'pi bhavato'pi tadīpsitam

Brahma said: O Daksha, hear the purpose for which I have come to you; whatever is good for you is what I too desire.

Verse 60 (shiva.rudra.37.60)

तव पुत्री समाराध्य महादेवं जगत्पतिम् । यो वरः प्रार्थितस्तस्य समयोऽयमुपागतः

tava putrī samārādhya mahādevaṁ jagatpatim | yo varaḥ prārthitastasya samayo'yamupāgataḥ

Your daughter, having worshipped Mahadeva, the lord of the world, requested a boon — the appointed time for that has now arrived.

Verse 61 (shiva.rudra.37.61)

शम्भुना तव पुत्र्यर्थं त्वत्सकाशमहं ध्रुवम् । प्रस्थापितोऽस्मि यत्कृत्यं श्रेयस्तदवधारय

śambhunā tava putryarthaṁ tvatsakāśamahaṁ dhruvam | prasthāpito'smi yatkṛtyaṁ śreyastadavadhāraya

By Shambhu himself, for your daughter's sake, I have surely been sent to your presence; ascertain what course would be most auspicious.

Verse 62 (shiva.rudra.37.62)

वरं दत्त्वा गतो रुद्रस्तावत्प्रभृति शङ्करः । त्वत्सुताया वियोगेन न शर्म लभतेऽञ्जसा

varaṁ dattvā gato rudrastāvatprabhṛti śaṅkaraḥ | tvatsutāyā viyogena na śarma labhate'ñjasā

Having granted the boon, Rudra, Shankara, departed; but ever since, through separation from your daughter, he has found no true peace at all.

Verse 63 (shiva.rudra.37.63)

अलब्धच्छिद्रमदनो जिगाय गिरिशं न यम् । सर्वैः पुष्पमयैर्बाणैर्यत्नं कृत्वापि भूरिशः

alabdhacchidramadano jigāya giriśaṁ na yam | sarvaiḥ puṣpamayairbāṇairyatnaṁ kṛtvāpi bhūriśaḥ

Kama, though he made great efforts with all his flower-arrows, finding no weakness in Girisha, could not conquer him.

Verse 64 (shiva.rudra.37.64)

स कामबाणविद्धोऽपि परित्यज्यात्मचिन्तनम् । सतीं विचिन्तयन्नास्ते व्याकुलः प्राकृतो यथा

sa kāmabāṇaviddho'pi parityajyātmacintanam | satīṁ vicintayannāste vyākulaḥ prākṛto yathā

Yet he, as though pierced by Kama's very arrow, abandoning his own self-contemplation, remains, like an ordinary being, restlessly thinking only of Sati.

Verse 65 (shiva.rudra.37.65)

विस्मृत्य प्रश्रुतां वाणीं गणाग्रे विप्रयोगतः । क्व सतीत्येवमभितो भाषते निकृतावपि

vismṛtya praśrutāṁ vāṇīṁ gaṇāgre viprayogataḥ | kva satītyevamabhito bhāṣate nikṛtāvapi

Forgetting even the vow he had once proclaimed before his own attendants, through this very separation he asks on every side, even in unlikely places, only, 'Where is Sati?'

Verse 66 (shiva.rudra.37.66)

मया यद्वाञ्छितं पूर्वं त्वया च मदनेन च । मरीच्याद्यैर्मुनिवरैस्तत्सिद्धमधुना सुत

mayā yadvāñchitaṁ pūrvaṁ tvayā ca madanena ca | marīcyādyairmunivaraistatsiddhamadhunā suta

My son, what I, and you, and Kama, and the great sages headed by Marichi had all along desired — that has now been accomplished.

Verse 67 (shiva.rudra.37.67)

त्वत्पुत्र्याराधितः शम्भुः सोऽपि तस्या विचिन्तनात् । अनुशोधयितुं प्रेप्सुर्वर्तते हिमवद्गिरौ

tvatputryārādhitaḥ śambhuḥ so'pi tasyā vicintanāt | anuśodhayituṁ prepsurvartate himavadgirau

Shambhu, worshipped by your daughter, himself now, out of longing for her, desires to be consoled, and remains upon the Himalayan mountain.

Verse 68 (shiva.rudra.37.68)

यथा नानाविधैर्भावैः सत्त्वात्तेन व्रतेन च । शम्भुराराधितस्तेन तथैवाराध्यते सती

yathā nānāvidhairbhāvaiḥ sattvāttena vratena ca | śambhurārādhitastena tathaivārādhyate satī

As she worshipped Shambhu through her manifold feelings, her true nature, and that very vow, so too Sati is now cherished by him in return.

Verse 69 (shiva.rudra.37.69)

तस्मात्तु दक्ष तनयां शम्भ्वर्थं परिकल्पिताम् । तस्मै देह्यविलम्बेन कृता ते कृतकृत्यता

tasmāttu dakṣa tanayāṁ śambhvarthaṁ parikalpitām | tasmai dehyavilambena kṛtā te kṛtakṛtyatā

Therefore, O Daksha, give without delay your daughter, who has been destined for Shambhu's sake, to him — thereby your task shall be fulfilled.

Verse 70 (shiva.rudra.37.70)

अहं तमानयिष्यामि नारदेन त्वदालयम् । तस्मै त्वमेनां संयच्छ तदर्थे परिकल्पिताम्

ahaṁ tamānayiṣyāmi nāradena tvadālayam | tasmai tvamenāṁ saṁyaccha tadarthe parikalpitām

I myself shall bring him, together with Narada, to your home; do you, for your part, give to him this daughter destined for his sake.

Verse 71 (shiva.rudra.37.71)

ब्रह्मोवाच श्रुत्वा मम वचश्चेति स मे पुत्रोऽतिहर्षितः । एवमेवेति मां दक्ष उवाच परहर्षितः

brahmovāca śrutvā mama vacaśceti sa me putro'tiharṣitaḥ | evameveti māṁ dakṣa uvāca paraharṣitaḥ

Brahma said: Hearing my words thus, my son, exceedingly delighted, said to me, filled with great joy, 'Let it be exactly so.'

Verse 72 (shiva.rudra.37.72)

ततः सोऽहं मुने तत्रागममत्यन्तहर्षितः । उत्सुको लोकनिरतो गिरिशो यत्र संस्थितः

tataḥ so'haṁ mune tatrāgamamatyantaharṣitaḥ | utsuko lokanirato giriśo yatra saṁsthitaḥ

O sage, then I, exceedingly delighted and eager, went there, where Girisha, ever intent on the world's welfare, was residing.

Verse 73 (shiva.rudra.37.73)

गते नारद दक्षोऽपि सदारतनयो ह्यपि । अभवत्पूर्णकामस्तु पीयूषैरिव पूरितः

gate nārada dakṣo'pi sadāratanayo hyapi | abhavatpūrṇakāmastu pīyūṣairiva pūritaḥ

O Narada, when I had gone, Daksha too, together with his wife and daughter, became fully satisfied in his desire, as if filled to the brim with nectar.
