Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.45.24)

hṛdayaṁ mama yo rudraḥ sa evāhaṁ na saṁśayaḥ | pūjyastava sadā so'pi brahmādīnāmapi dhruvam

"That Rudra who is my own heart, is verily myself — of this there is no doubt; he too shall be forever worthy of worship by you, and surely by Brahma and the rest as well."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.45.27)

śrīrāma uvāca | akhaṇḍaiśvaryamāsādya hareritthaṁ haraḥ svayam | kailāse svagaṇaistasmin svairaṁ krīḍatyumāpatiḥ

Shri Rama said: "Having thus bestowed undivided sovereignty upon Hari, Hara himself, the Lord of Uma, continues to sport freely, together with his own attendants, upon Mount Kailasa."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.45.31)

tadāprabhṛti lakṣmīśo gopaveṣo'bhavattathā | ayāsīttatra suprītyā gopagopīgavāṁ patiḥ

"From that time on, the Lord of Lakshmi took the guise of a cowherd, and, as lord of the cowherds, the cowherd maidens, and the cattle, went there with deep affection."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.45.32)

so'pi viṣṇuḥ prasannātmā jugopa nikhilaṁ jagat | nānāvatārasandhartāvanakartā śivājñayā

"That Vishnu too, gladdened in heart, protected the entire world, taking up his manifold incarnations and their tasks of preservation, all at Shiva's own command."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.45.33)

idānīṁ sa caturddhātrāvātaracchaṅkarājñayā | rāmo'haṁ tatra bharato lakṣmaṇaḥ śatruheti ca

"At this present time he has descended in fourfold form, by Shankara's own command; among these I am Rama, and there are also Bharata, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.45.34)

atha pitrājñayā devi sasītālakṣmaṇaḥ sati | āgato'haṁ vane cādya duḥkhito daivato'bhavam

"O goddess, O Sati, at my father's command I came into this forest together with Sita and Lakshmana, and now, by the working of fate, I have become sorrowful."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.45.35)

niśācareṇa me jāyā hṛtā sīteti kenacit | anveṣyāmi priyāṁ cātra virahī bandhunā vane

"Some night-roaming demon has stolen away my wife Sita; parted from her, I search here in the forest for my beloved, together with my brother."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.45.36)

"O Mother, O Sati, if I have been blessed with the sight of you, then, by your grace, all shall surely be well with me — of this there is no doubt."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.45.37)

sītāprāptivaraṁ devi bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ | taṁ hatvā duḥkhadaṁ pāpaṁ rākṣasaṁ tvadanugrahāt

"O goddess, by your grace, the boon of Sita's recovery shall surely be mine — of this there is no doubt — once I have slain that sorrow-bringing, sinful demon."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.45.38)

mahadbhāgyaṁ mamādyaiva yadyakārṣṭāṁ kṛpāṁ yuvām | yasmin sakaruṇau syātāṁ sa dhanyaḥ puruṣo varaḥ

"This is indeed my great good fortune today, that you both have shown me your grace; whatever man receives the compassion of you two is truly blessed and most fortunate."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.45.39)

itthamābhāṣya bahudhā supraṇamya satīṁ śivām | tadājñayā vane tasmin vicacāra raghūdvahaḥ

Having spoken thus at length, and having duly bowed to the goddess Sati, Shivā, Raghava went on, by their leave, to wander that forest.

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.45.40)

athākarṇya satī vākyaṁ rāmasya prayatātmanaḥ | hṛṣṭābhūtsā praśaṁsantaṁ śivabhaktirataṁ hṛdi

Then, hearing the words of Rama, so disciplined in spirit, and seeing him praising Shiva, his heart absorbed in devotion, Sati was filled with delight.

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.45.41)

smṛtvā svakarma manasākārṣīcchokaṁ suvistaram | pratyāgacchadudāsīnā vivarṇā śivasannidhau

Yet, remembering what she herself had done, deep sorrow arose in her mind, and she returned to Shiva's presence downcast and pale.

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.45.42)

pathi sācintayad devī sañcalantī punaḥ punaḥ | nāṅgīkṛtaṁ śivoktaṁ me rāmaṁ prati kudhīḥ kṛtā

Walking along the path, the goddess pondered again and again: "I did not accept what Shiva told me, and toward Rama I acted with a foolish, doubting mind."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.45.43)

kimuttaramahaṁ dāsye gatvā śaṅkarasannidhau | iti sañcintya bahudhā paścāttāpo'bhavattadā

"What answer shall I give, once I return to Shankara's presence?" — pondering this again and again, she was overcome then with deep remorse.

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.45.44)

gatvā śambhusamīpaṁ ca praṇanāma śivaṁ hṛdā | viṣaṇṇavadanā śokavyākulā vigataprabhā

Having come near to Shambhu, she bowed to Shiva with her whole heart; her face downcast, her mind troubled with grief, her radiance all but gone.

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.45.45)

atha tāṁ duḥkhitāṁ dṛṣṭvā papraccha kuśalaṁ haraḥ | provāca vacanaṁ prītyā tatparīkṣā kṛtā katham

Then, seeing her sorrowful, Hara asked after her well-being, and lovingly asked too how she had carried out that test.

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.45.46)

śrutvā śivavaco nāhaṁ kimapi praṇatānanā | satī śokaviṣaṇṇā sā tasthau tatra samīpataḥ

Hearing Shiva's words, Sati said nothing at all; her face bowed down, sorrowful and dejected, she simply stood there beside him.

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.45.47)

atha dhyātvā maheśastu bubodha caritaṁ hṛdā | dakṣajāyā mahāyogī nānālīlāviśāradaḥ

Then Mahesha, the great yogin, skilled in manifold divine plays, entered into meditation and, through his own heart, came to know all that Daksha's daughter had done.

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.45.48)

sasmāra svapaṇaṁ pūrvaṁ yatkṛtaṁ harikopataḥ | tatprārthito'tha rudro'sau maryādāpratipālakaḥ

He recalled his own earlier vow, made once to guard against any anger toward Hari; bound by that pledge, Rudra, ever the keeper of proper order —

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.45.49)

viṣādo'bhūtprabhostatra manasyevamuvāca ha | dharmavaktā dharmakartā dharmāvanakaraḥ sadā

— felt sorrow arise in his own heart, and, ever the speaker of dharma, the doer of dharma, the protector of dharma, spoke thus within his own mind.

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.45.50)

śiva uvāca | kuryāṁ ceddakṣajāyāṁ hi snehaṁ pūrvaṁ yathā mahān | naśyenmama paṇaḥ śuddho lokalīlānusāriṇaḥ

Shiva said: "If I show as great an affection toward Daksha's daughter as before, then my own pure vow — one made in keeping with the ways of worldly play — would be broken."

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.45.51)

brahmovāca | itthaṁ vicārya bahudhā hṛdā tāmatyajatsatīm | paṇaṁ na nāśayāmāsa vedadharmaprapālakaḥ

Brahma said: Having thus deliberated at length in his heart, Shiva, guardian of Vedic dharma, withdrew his heart's affection from Sati, yet he did not let his vow come to ruin.

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.45.52)

Then the Supreme Lord, having inwardly relinquished Sati, set out for his own mountain; but that Lord, bound by his own vow, could not disclose his inner grief to anyone.

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.45.53)

calantaṁ pathi taṁ vyomavāṇyuvāca maheśvaram | sarvān saṁśrāvayaṁstatra dakṣajāṁ ca viśeṣataḥ

As he walked along the path, a voice from the sky spoke to Maheshvara, its words heard there by all, and especially by Daksha's daughter.

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.45.54)

The voice from the sky said: "Blessed are you, O Supreme Lord, and today none is your equal in keeping a vow; in these three worlds there is no other so great a yogin, so great a Lord, as you."

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.45.55)

brahmovāca | śrutvā vyomavaco devī śivaṁ papraccha viprabhā | kaṁ paṇaṁ kṛtavānnātha brūhi me parameśvara

Brahma said: Hearing the voice from the sky, the goddess, her radiance now dimmed, asked Shiva: "What vow have you made, my Lord? Tell me, O Supreme Ishvara."

Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.45.56)

iti pṛṣṭo'pi giriśaḥ satyā hitakaraḥ prabhuḥ | nodvāhaṁ svaṁ paṇaṁ tasyai yat haryagre'karotpurā

Though thus asked, Girisha, the Lord who ever wished her well, did not reveal to her the vow he had made long ago before Hari.

Verse 57 (shiva.rudra.45.57)

tadā satī śivaṁ dhyātvā svapatiṁ prāṇavallabham | sarvaṁ bubodha hetuṁ taṁ priyatyāgamayaṁ mune

O sage, then Sati, meditating upon Shiva, her own husband dearer than life itself, came to understand the entire reason behind his withdrawn affection.

Verse 58 (shiva.rudra.45.58)

tato'tīva śuśocāśu budhvā sā tyāgamātmanaḥ | śambhunā dakṣajā tasmānniḥśvasantī muhurmuhuḥ

Upon realizing that Shambhu had thus withdrawn from her, Daksha's daughter at once fell into deep sorrow, sighing again and again.

Verse 59 (shiva.rudra.45.59)

śivastasyāḥ samājñāya guptaṁ cakre manobhavam | satyai paṇaṁ svakīyaṁ hi kathā bahvīrvadan prabhuḥ

Shiva, though fully aware of her state of mind, kept it hidden, and the Lord, keeping his own vow secret from Sati, went on telling her many tales instead.

Verse 60 (shiva.rudra.45.60)

satyā prāpa sa kailāsaṁ kathayan vividhāḥ kathāḥ | vare sthitvā nijaṁ rūpaṁ dadhau yogī samādhibhṛt

Telling various tales, he arrived with Sati at Kailasa; there, established upon that excellent seat, the yogin, absorbed in meditation, assumed his own contemplative form.

Verse 61 (shiva.rudra.45.61)

tatra tasthau satī dhāmni mahāvyākulamānasā | na bubodha caritraṁ tatkaścicca śivayormune

O sage, Sati remained there in that abode, her mind in great turmoil; no one there came to know the true nature of what had passed between the two of them, Shiva and Sati.

Verse 62 (shiva.rudra.45.62)

mahānkālo vyatīyāya tayoritthaṁ mahāmune | svopāttadehayoḥ prabhvorlokalīlānusāriṇoḥ

O great sage, thus a long span of time passed for those two lords, who had taken on bodies of their own free will, in accordance with the ways of worldly play.

Verse 63 (shiva.rudra.45.63)

dhyānaṁ tatyāja giriśastataḥ sa paramotikṛt | tajjñātvā jagadambā hi satī tatrājagāma sā

Then Girisha, the doer of the supreme act, ended his meditation; knowing this, the Mother of the Universe, Sati, came there before him.

Verse 64 (shiva.rudra.45.64)

nanāmātha śivaṁ devī hṛdayena vidūyatā | āsanaṁ dattavān śambhuḥ svasammukha udāradhīḥ

The goddess, her heart aching, bowed down to Shiva; and magnanimous Shambhu offered her a seat there before him.

Verse 65 (shiva.rudra.45.65)

kathayāmāsa suprītyā kathā vahvīrmanoramāḥ | niḥśokāṁ kṛtavān sadyo līlāṁ kṛtvā ca tādṛśīm

With deep affection he told her many delightful tales, and, through such a display of his own play, at once relieved her of her sorrow.

Verse 66 (shiva.rudra.45.66)

pūrvavatsā sukhaṁ lebhe tatyāja svapaṇaṁ na saḥ | netyāścaryaṁ śive tāta mantavyaṁ parameśvare

She came once again to know happiness as before, yet he never abandoned his own vow. My son, in this there is nothing to be regarded as strange about the Supreme Lord Shiva.

Verse 67 (shiva.rudra.45.67)

itthaṁ śivāśivakathāṁ vadanti munayo mune | kila kecidavidvāṁso viyogaśca kathaṁ tayoḥ

O sage, thus do the sages tell the tale of Shiva and Shivā; it is only some who are less wise who ask how a true separation could ever have occurred between the two of them.

Verse 68 (shiva.rudra.45.68)

śivāśivacaritraṁ ko jānāti paramārthataḥ | svecchayā krīḍatastau hi caritaṁ kurutaḥ sadā

Who indeed can truly know the deeds of Shiva and Shivā in their ultimate reality? The two of them, sporting ever at their own will, continually enact such deeds.

Verse 69 (shiva.rudra.45.69)

vāgarthāviva sampṛktau sadā khalu satīśivau | tayorviyogo'sambhāvyaḥ sambhavedicchayā tayoḥ

Sati and Shiva are ever conjoined, just as word and meaning are; a true separation between the two of them is impossible — it can only ever seem to occur through their own free will.
