Rudra Samhita · Chapter 46
The Enmity of Daksha Toward Shiva
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.46.1)
brahmovāca | purābhavacca sarveṣāmadhvaro vidhinā mahān | prayāge samavetānāṁ munīnāṁ ca mahātmanām
Brahma said: Long ago, a great sacrifice, performed with due rite, took place at Prayaga among all the great-souled sages who had gathered there.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.46.2)
tatra siddhāḥ samāyātāḥ sanakādyāḥ surarṣayaḥ | saprajāpatayo devā jñānino brahmadarśinaḥ
There came the Siddhas, Sanaka and his brothers, the divine sages, the gods together with the Prajapatis, and the wise, those who had beheld Brahman directly.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.46.3)
ahaṁ samāgatastatra parivārasamanvitaḥ | nigamairāgamairyukto mūrtimadbhirmahāprabhaiḥ
I too came there, together with my own family, accompanied by the Vedas and Agamas in their embodied, greatly radiant forms.
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.46.4)
samājo'bhūdvicitro hi teṣāmutsavasaṁyutaḥ | jñānavādo'bhavattatra nānāśāstrasamudbhavaḥ
Their gathering was a wondrous and festive one; discussions of wisdom arose there, drawn from many branches of learning.
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.46.5)
tasminnavasare rudraḥ sabhavānīgaṇaḥ prabhuḥ | trilokahitakṛtsvāmī tatrāgātsūtikṛnmune
O sage, on that occasion the Lord Rudra, together with Bhavani and his attendants, he who is the master and benefactor of all three worlds, the very creator of beings, arrived there.
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.46.6)
dṛṣṭvā śivaṁ surāḥ sarve siddhāśca munayastathā | anamaṁstaṁ prabhuṁ bhaktyā tuṣṭuvuśca tathā hyaham
Seeing Shiva, all the gods, the Siddhas, and the sages, and I myself as well, bowed to that Lord with devotion and offered him praise.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.46.7)
tasthuḥ śivājñayā sarve yathāsthānaṁ mudānvitāḥ | prabhudarśanasantuṣṭāḥ varṇayanto nijaṁ vidhim
At Shiva's word, all took their seats, each in their own place, delighted, satisfied at the sight of the Lord, and each began to describe his own practice.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.46.8)
tasminnavasare dakṣaḥ prajāpatipatiḥ prabhuḥ | āgamattatra suprītaḥ suvarcasvī yadṛcchayā
At that same moment, Daksha, lord of the Prajapatis, a radiant and mighty being, also arrived there of his own accord, in high spirits.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.46.9)
māṁ praṇamya sa dakṣo hi nyuṣṭastatra madājñayā | brahmāṇḍādhipatirmānyo mānī tattvabahirmukhaḥ
That Daksha bowed to me and, at my word, sat down there; he was lord of the universe, honored by all, yet proud, and averse to the deeper truth.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.46.10)
stutibhiḥ praṇipātaiśca dakṣaḥ sarvaiḥ surarṣibhiḥ | pūjito varatejasvī karau vadhvā vinamrakaiḥ
All the divine sages, humbly folding their hands, honored the radiant Daksha with praises and prostrations.
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.46.11)
nānāvihārakṛnnāthaḥ svatantraḥ paramotikṛt | nānāmattaṁ tadā dakṣaṁ svāsanastho maheśvaraḥ
The Lord Maheshvara, ever the doer of manifold play, free and supreme in his acts, remained seated there upon his own seat, while Daksha, meanwhile, grew intoxicated with his own many kinds of pride.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.46.12)
dṛṣṭvānataṁ haraṁ tatra sa me putro'prasannadhīḥ | akupyatsahasā rudre tadā dakṣaḥ prajāpatiḥ
Seeing Hara there not bowing to him, my son, Daksha the Prajapati, grew displeased in mind, and suddenly flew into a rage against Rudra.
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.46.13)
krūradṛṣṭyā mahāgarvo dṛṣṭvā rudraṁ mahāprabhum | sarvānsaṁśrāvayannuccairavocajjñānavarjitaḥ
Filled with overweening pride, glaring at the great Lord Rudra with a cruel eye, Daksha, devoid of wisdom, spoke aloud, so that all could hear.
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.46.14)
dakṣavāca | ete hi sarve ca surāsurā bhṛśaṁ namanti māṁ vipravarāstatharṣayaḥ | kathaṁ hyasau durjanavanmahāmanā tvabhūttu yaḥ pretapiśācasaṁvṛtaḥ
Daksha said: "All these gods, demons, the finest of brahmins, and sages bow to me most humbly; how then can this one, surrounded by ghosts and goblins, be so proud, so arrogant, like some ill-bred wretch?"
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.46.15)
śmaśānavāsī nirapatrapo hyayaṁ kathaṁ praṇāmaṁ na karoti me'dhunā | luptakriyo bhūtapiśācasevito matto'vidho nītividūṣakaḥ sadā
"Why does this shameless dweller in the cremation grounds not bow before me now? He is bereft of all proper rites, attended by ghosts and goblins, ever intoxicated, lawless, and a constant mocker of right conduct."
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.46.16)
pākhaṇḍino durjanapāpaśīlā dṛṣṭvā dvijaṁ proddhatanindakāñca | vadhvāṁ sadāsaktaratipravīṇa- stasmādamuṁ śaptumahaṁ pravṛttaḥ
"He is a heretic, sinful in nature like the wicked, one who insolently reviles brahmins at the very sight of them, and one ever attached to lustful union with his own bride — for this I am resolved to curse him."
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.46.17)
brahmovāca | ityevamuktvā sa mahākhalastadā ruṣānvito rudramidaṁ hyavocat | śṛṇvantvamī vipravarāstathā surā vadhyaṁ hi me cārhatha kartumetam
Brahma said: Having said this, that greatly wicked Daksha, filled with rage, then spoke thus of Rudra: "Let these finest of brahmins, and the gods too, hear this — you should all regard this one as fit for my condemnation."
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.46.18)
dakṣa uvāca | rudro hyayaṁ yajñabahiṣkṛto me varṇeṣvatīto'tha vivarṇarūpaḥ | devairna bhāgaṁ labhatāṁ sahaiva śmaśānavāsī kulajanmahīnaḥ
Daksha said: "Let this Rudra be excluded from my sacrifice; he stands outside the fourfold order, of degraded and colorless form. Let him receive no share along with the gods; he is a dweller in cremation grounds, base in lineage and in birth."
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.46.19)
brahmovāca | iti dakṣoktamākarṇya bhṛgvādyā bahavo janāḥ | agarhayan duṣṭasattvaṁ rudraṁ mattvāmaraiḥ samam
Brahma said: Hearing what Daksha had said, Bhrigu and many others too, together with the gods, taking Rudra to be of evil nature, joined in reproaching him.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.46.20)
nandī niśamya tadvākyaṁ lolākṣo'tiruṣānvitaḥ | abravīt tvaritaṁ dakṣaṁ śāpaṁ dātumanā gaṇaḥ
Hearing that speech, Nandi, his eyes rolling with fury, filled with intense rage, at once resolved to curse Daksha and spoke to him without delay.
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.46.21)
nandīśvara uvāca | re re śaṭha mahāmūḍha dakṣa duṣṭamate tvayā | yajñabāhyo hi me svāmī maheśo hi kṛtaḥ katham
Nandishvara said: "You wretch, you utter fool, O evil-minded Daksha, how could you dare to exclude my Lord Mahesha from the sacrifice?"
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.46.22)
yasya smaraṇamātreṇa bhavanti saphalā makhāḥ | tīrthāni ca pavitrāṇi so'yaṁ śapto haraḥ katham
"By the mere remembrance of whom all sacrifices become fruitful and all sacred fords become pure — how could you dare to curse that very Hara?"
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.46.23)
vṛthā te brahmacāpalyācchapto'yaṁ dakṣa durmate | vṛthopahasitaścaivāduṣṭo rudro mahāprabhuḥ
"O foolish-minded Daksha, out of mere brahminical fickleness you have cursed him in vain; you have vainly mocked the great Lord Rudra, who is without any fault."
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.46.24)
yenedaṁ pālyate viśvaṁ sṛṣṭamante vināśitam | śapto'yaṁ sa kathaṁ rudro maheśo brāhmaṇādhama
"By whom this universe is sustained, created, and, in the end, destroyed — how, O basest of brahmins, could you have cursed that very Rudra, Mahesha?"
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.46.25)
evaṁ nirbhatsitastena nandinā hi prajāpatiḥ | nandinaṁ ca śaśāpātha dakṣo roṣasamanvitaḥ
Thus reproached by Nandi, Daksha the Prajapati, overcome with rage, in turn began to curse Nandi himself.
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.46.26)
dakṣa uvāca | yūyaṁ sarve rudragaṇā vedabāhyā bhavantu vai | vedamārgaparityaktāstathā tyaktā maharṣibhiḥ
Daksha said: "May all of you, Rudra's attendants, become excluded from the Vedas; may you be abandoned by the path of the Vedas, and cast off by the great sages too."
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.46.27)
pākhaṇḍavādaniratāḥ śiṣṭācārabahiṣkṛtāḥ | madirāpānaniratā jaṭābhasmāsthidhāriṇaḥ
"May you become devoted to heretical doctrine, cast out from all decent conduct, given ever to drinking wine, and marked forever by matted hair, ashes, and bones."
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.46.28)
brahmovāca | iti śaptāstathā tena dakṣeṇa śivakiṅkarāḥ | tacchrutvātiruṣāviṣṭo'bhavannandī śivapriyaḥ
Brahma said: Thus were Shiva's servants cursed by Daksha; hearing this, Nandi, Shiva's dearest devotee, was overcome with the greatest fury.
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.46.29)
pratyuvāca drutaṁ dakṣaṁ garvitaṁ taṁ mahākhalam | śilādatanayo nandī tejasvī śivavallabhaḥ
Nandi, son of Shilada, radiant, beloved of Shiva, at once answered that proud and greatly wicked Daksha.
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.46.30)
nandīśvara uvāca | re dakṣa śaṭha durbuddhe vṛthaiva śivakiṅkarāḥ | śaptāste brahmacāpalyācchivatattvamajānatā
Nandishvara said: "You wretch, O foolish-minded Daksha, in your fickleness, and without knowing the truth of Shiva, you have vainly cursed Shiva's own servants."
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.46.31)
bhṛgvādyairduṣṭacittaiśca mūḍhaiḥ sa upahāsitaḥ | mahāprabhurmaheśāno brāhmaṇatvādahammate
"O proud one, Bhrigu and the other fools, their minds corrupted, have mocked that great Lord Mahesha too, out of mere pride in their own brahminhood."
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.46.32)
ye rudravimukhāścātra brāhmaṇāstvādṛśāḥ khalāḥ | rudratejaḥprabhāvatvātteṣāṁ śāpaṁ dadāmyaham
"Whatever brahmins here, wicked as you are, turn their faces from Rudra — by the power and majesty of Rudra, I now pronounce a curse upon them as well."
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.46.33)
vedavādaratā yūyaṁ vedatattvabahirmukhāḥ | bhavantu satataṁ viprā nānyadastīti vādinaḥ
"May you brahmins remain forever engrossed in mere verbal disputation over the Vedas, yet ever averse to their true inner meaning, and forever declaring, 'There is nothing beyond this.'"
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.46.34)
kāmātmānaḥ svargaparāḥ krodhalobhamadānvitāḥ | bhavantu satataṁ viprā bhikṣukā nirapatrapāḥ
"May you brahmins ever be given over to lust, intent only upon heaven, filled with anger, greed, and pride, and become shameless beggars."
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.46.35)
vedamārgaṁ puraskṛtya brāhmaṇāḥ śūdrayājinaḥ | daridrā vai bhaviṣyanti pratigraharatāḥ sadā
"Brahmins who, while claiming the path of the Vedas, perform sacrifices for the base and unworthy shall remain forever poor, even as they remain ever attached to receiving gifts."
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.46.36)
asatpratigrahāścaiva sarve nirayagāminaḥ | bhaviṣyanti sadā dakṣa kecidvai brahmarākṣasāḥ
"O Daksha, all who accept unworthy gifts shall forever be bound for hell, and some among them shall even become brahma-rakshasas."
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.46.37)
yaḥ śivaṁ surasāmānyamuddiśya parameśvaram | druhyatyajo duṣṭamatiḥ tattvatāṁ vimukho bhavet
"Whoever, taking Shiva to be but an ordinary god, does violence against that Supreme Lord — that ill-minded person shall remain forever averse to the ultimate truth."
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.46.38)
kūṭadharmeṣu geheṣu sadā grāmyasukhecchayā | karmatantraṁ vitanutāṁ vedavādaṁ ca śāśvatam
"Let him, ever desiring only worldly household pleasure, remain forever caught up in false, hollow observances, endlessly propagating mere ritualism and empty scriptural dispute."
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.46.39)
vinaṣṭānandakamukho vismṛtātmagatiḥ paśuḥ | bhraṣṭakarmānayarato dakṣo bastamukho'cirāt
"O Daksha, may your face lose all its joy, may you forget your own soul's true path, become like a beast, remain devoted to corrupted rites, and swiftly gain the face of a goat."
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.46.40)
śaptāste kopinā tatra nandinā brāhmaṇā yadā | hāhākāro mahānāsīcchapto dakṣeṇa ceśvaraḥ
When the enraged Nandi had thus cursed those brahmins there, a great outcry of dismay arose, for Daksha too had cursed the Lord himself.
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.46.41)
tadākarṇyāhamatyantamanindaṁ taṁ muhurmuhuḥ | bhṛgvādīnapi viprāṁśca vedasṛṭ śivatattvavit
Hearing this, I too — as the very author of the Vedas and one who knows the truth of Shiva — reproached that Daksha, and Bhrigu and the other brahmins as well, again and again, most severely.
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.46.42)
īśvaro'pi vacaḥ śrutvā nandinaḥ prahasanniva | uvāca madhuraṁ vākyaṁ bodhayaṁstaṁ sadāśivaḥ
Hearing Nandi's words, the Lord Sadashiva, smiling as it were, spoke gentle words to him, seeking to make him understand.
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.46.43)
sadāśiva uvāca | śṛṇu nandin mahāprājña na kartuṁ krodhamarhasi | vṛthā śaptaṁ brahmakulaṁ matvā śaptaṁ ca māṁ bhramāt
Sadashiva said: "Listen, O greatly wise Nandin, it is not fitting for you to give way to anger; you have cursed the lineage of Brahma in vain, thinking that they, out of mere confusion, had cursed me."
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.46.44)
vedo mantrākṣaramayaḥ sākṣātsūktamayo bhṛśam | sūkte pratiṣṭhito hyātmā sarveṣāmapi dehinām
"The Veda itself consists wholly of sacred mantric syllables, is made entirely of its own hymns; and in those very hymns the very self of every embodied being is enshrined."
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.46.45)
tasmādātmavido nityaṁ tvaṁ mā śapa ruṣānvitaḥ | śapyā na vedāḥ kenāpi durddhiyā'pi kadācana
"Therefore, O knower of the self, never curse anyone in anger; the Vedas are never fit to be cursed by anyone, however evil-minded he may be."
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.46.46)
ahaṁ śapto na cedānīṁ tattvato boddhumarhasi | śānto bhava mahādhīman sanakādivibodhakaḥ
"In truth I cannot be cursed at all — this you should now understand in its full reality; O greatly wise one, you who instruct even Sanaka and his brothers, be at peace."
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.46.47)
yajño'haṁ yajñakarmāhaṁ yajñāṅgāni ca sarvaśaḥ | yajñātmā yajñanirato yajñabāhyo'hameva vai
"I myself am the sacrifice, I am the act of sacrifice, I am all the limbs of the sacrifice; I am the very soul of sacrifice, I am the one devoted to sacrifice, and I myself am also the one who stands outside of sacrifice."
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.46.48)
ko'yaṁ kastvamime ke hi sarvo'hamapi tattvataḥ | iti buddhyā hi vimṛśa vṛthā śaptāstvayā dvijāḥ
"Who is this one, who are you, who are all these others — in ultimate reality I alone am all of them; reflect on this with your own understanding — you have cursed those brahmins to no purpose."
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.46.49)
tattvajñānena nirhṛtya prapañcaracanāṁ bhava | budhaḥsvastho mahābuddhe nandin krodhādivarjitaḥ
"Through true knowledge of reality, dissolve away this whole fabric of apparent multiplicity; O greatly wise Nandin, become wise and settled in yourself, free from anger and its like."
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.46.50)
brahmovāca | evaṁ prabodhitastena śambhunā nandikeśvaraḥ | vivekaparamo bhūtvā śānto'bhūtkrodhavarjitaḥ
Brahma said: Thus instructed by Shambhu, Nandikeshvara, attaining supreme discernment, grew calm and was freed of his anger.
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.46.51)
śivo'pi taṁ prabodhyāśu svagaṇaṁ prāṇavallabham | sagaṇaḥ sa yayau tasmātsvasthānaṁ pramudānvitaḥ
Shiva too, having thus quickly instructed his attendant, dearer to him than life, then departed from that place, together with his hosts, with a joyful heart, for his own abode.
Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.46.52)
dakṣo'pi sa ruṣāviṣṭastairdvijaiḥ parivāritaḥ | svasthānaṁ ca yayau citte śivadrohaparāyaṇaḥ
Daksha too, still filled with rage, surrounded by those brahmins, went to his own abode, his mind now set upon enmity toward Shiva.
Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.46.53)
rudraṁ tadānīṁ pariśapyamānaṁ saṁsmṛtya dakṣaḥ parayā ruṣānvitaḥ | śraddhāṁ vihāyaiva sa mūḍhabuddhi- rnindāparo'bhūcchivapūjakānām
Calling to mind that occasion on which Rudra had been so cursed, Daksha, filled with the deepest rage, his understanding utterly clouded, abandoned all reverence and gave himself over to reviling the worshippers of Shiva.
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.46.54)
