Rudra Samhita · Chapter 47
The Sacrifice Begins
Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.47.1)
brahmovāca | ekadā tu mune tena yajñaḥ prārambhito mahān | tatrāhūtāstadā sarve dīkṣitena surarṣayaḥ
Brahma said: O sage, once that Daksha undertook a great sacrifice; having taken the sacrificial vows, he invited to it, at that time, all the divine sages.
Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.47.2)
maharṣayo'khilāstatra nirjarāśca samāgatāḥ | yadyajñakaraṇārthaṁ hi śivamāyāvimohitāḥ
All the great sages and the gods, bewildered by Shiva's own power of illusion, gathered there for the performance of that sacrifice.
Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.47.3)
agastyaḥ kaśyapo'triśca vāmadevastathā bhṛguḥ | dadhīcirbhagavān vyāso bhāradvājo'tha gautamaḥ
Agastya, Kashyapa, Atri, Vamadeva, Bhrigu, the venerable Dadhichi, Vyasa, Bharadvaja, and Gautama —
Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.47.4)
pailaḥ parāśaro gargo bhārgavaḥ kakubhaḥ sitaḥ | sumantutrikakaṅkāśca vaiśampāyana eva ca
— Paila, Parashara, Garga, Bhargava, Kakubha, Sita, Sumantu, Trika, Kanka, and Vaishampayana —
Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.47.5)
ete cānye ca bahavo munayo harṣitā yayuḥ | mama putrasya dakṣasya sadārāḥ sasutā makham
— these and many other sages, together with their wives and sons, went joyfully to the sacrifice of my son Daksha.
Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.47.6)
tathā sarve suragaṇā lokapālā mahodayāḥ | tathopanirjarāḥ sarve svopakārabalānvitāḥ
Likewise all the hosts of gods, the mighty guardians of the quarters, and all the lesser divinities, each with their own powers, went there as well.
Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.47.7)
satyalokātsamānīto nuto'haṁ viśvakārakaḥ | sasutaḥ saparīvāro mūrtavedādisaṁyutaḥ
I too, the maker of the universe, was brought there from Satyaloka, together with my sons and family, and accompanied by the Vedas and the rest in their embodied forms, and was duly honored.
Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.47.8)
vaikuṇṭhācca tathā viṣṇuḥ samprārthya vividhādarāt | sapārṣadaparīvāraḥ samānīto makhaṁ prati
Likewise, Vishnu too was besought with every manner of reverence and brought from Vaikuntha, together with his own attendants and household, to that sacrifice.
Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.47.9)
evamanye samāyātā dakṣayajñaṁ vimohitāḥ | satkṛtāstena dakṣeṇa sarve te hi durātmanā
In this way many others too, likewise bewildered, came to Daksha's sacrifice; and that evil-minded Daksha received all of them with due honor.
Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.47.10)
bhavanāni mahārhāṇi suprabhāṇi mahānti ca | tvaṣṭrā kṛtāni divyāni tebhyo dattāni tena vai
Vast and precious mansions, radiant and divine, fashioned by Tvashta, were given by him to all of them.
Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.47.11)
teṣu sarveṣu dhiṣṇyeṣu yathāyogyaṁ ca saṁsthitāḥ | sanmānitā arājaṁste sakalā viṣṇunā mayā
Settled, each in his proper place, within all those dwellings, and honored by Vishnu and myself, all of them shone there resplendent.
Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.47.12)
vartamāne mahāyajñe tīrthe kanakhale tadā | ṛtvijaśca kṛtāstena bhṛgvādyāśca tapodhanāḥ
In that great sacrifice, then in progress at the sacred ford of Kanakhala, he appointed Bhrigu and the other sages, rich in austerity, as the officiating priests.
Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.47.13)
adhiṣṭhātā svayaṁ viṣṇuḥ saha sarvamarudgaṇaiḥ | ahaṁ tatrābhavaṁ brahmā trayīvidhinidarśakaḥ
Vishnu himself became its presiding overseer, together with all the Marut hosts, and I, Brahma, was there as the one who set forth the rites of the threefold Veda.
Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.47.14)
tathaiva sarve dikpālā dvārapālāśca rakṣakāḥ | sāyudhāḥ saparīvārāḥ kutūhalakarāḥ sadā
Likewise all the guardians of the quarters, the gatekeepers, and the protectors, armed and attended by their retinues, stood ready there, ever a wonder to behold.
Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.47.15)
upatasthe svayaṁ yajñaḥ surūpastasya cādhvare | sarve mahāmuniśreṣṭhāḥ svayaṁ vedadharābhavan
At that rite, the very deity of Sacrifice himself came and stood there in fair bodily form, and all the greatest of sages themselves became the bearers of the Vedas.
Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.47.16)
tanūnapādapi nijaṁ cakre rūpaṁ sahasraśaḥ | haviṣāṁ grahaṇāyāśu tasmin yajñe mahotsave
At that great festival of a sacrifice, Tanunapat, too, assumed a thousand forms of his own, so as to quickly receive the many offerings.
Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.47.17)
aṣṭāśītisahasrāṇi juhvati saha ṛtvijaḥ | udgātāraścatuḥṣaṣṭisahasrāṇi surarṣayaḥ
Eighty-eight thousand divine sages, together with the officiating priests, offered oblations, while sixty-four thousand divine sages served as the chanters.
Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.47.18)
adhvaryavo'tha hotārastāvanto nāradādayaḥ | saptarṣayaḥ samā gāthāḥ kurvanti sma pṛthakpṛthak
Narada and others, equal in number, served as the adhvaryu priests and the hotris, while the Seven Sages each separately chanted the sacrificial hymns.
Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.47.19)
gandharvavidyādharasiddhasaṅghā- nādityasaṅghān sagaṇān sayajñān | saṅkhyāvatānnāgacarān samastān vavre sa dakṣo hi mahādhvare sve
Daksha, at that great sacrifice of his own, invited the hosts of Gandharvas, Vidyadharas, and Siddhas, the companies of the Adityas together with their attendants, the sacrificing followers of Samkhya, and all who move among the serpent folk.
Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.47.20)
dvijarṣirājarṣisurarṣisaṅghā nṛpāḥ samitrāḥ sacivāḥ sasainyāḥ | vasupramukhyā gaṇadevatāśca sarve vṛtāstena makhopavettrā
The assemblies of brahmin sages, royal sages, and divine sages, kings together with their allies, ministers, and armies, and the host-deities headed by the Vasus — all these were invited by Daksha, the sponsor of the sacrifice.
Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.47.21)
dīkṣāyuktastadā dakṣaḥ kṛtakautukamaṅgalaḥ | bhāryayā sahito reje kṛtasvastyayano bhṛśam
Daksha, now consecrated for the rite, having performed the auspicious ceremonies, together with his wife, having completed the blessings for well-being, shone there most resplendent.
Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.47.22)
tasmin yajñe vṛtaḥ śambhurna dakṣeṇa durātmanā | kapālīti viniścitya tasya yajñārhatā na hi
That evil-minded Daksha did not invite Shambhu to that sacrifice; he had resolved that Kapali, the skull-bearer, was not worthy to share in the rite.
Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.47.23)
kapālibhāryeti satī dayitā svasutāpi ca | nāhūtā yajñaviṣaye dakṣeṇāguṇadarśinā
Daksha, seeing only fault in all things, did not invite even his own dear daughter Sati to that sacrifice, thinking, "She is but the wife of the skull-bearer."
Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.47.24)
evaṁ pravartamāne hi dakṣayajñe mahotsave | svakāryalagnāstatrāsan sarve te'dhvarasammatāḥ
Thus, as Daksha's great festival of a sacrifice went forward, all those honored guests of the rite remained absorbed, each in his own appointed task.
Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.47.25)
etasminnantare'dṛṣṭvā tatra vai śaṅkaraṁ prabhum | prodvignamānasaḥ śaivo dadhīco vākyamabravīt
Meanwhile, not seeing the Lord Shankara there, Dadhichi, that devotee of Shiva, his mind deeply troubled, spoke these words.
Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.47.26)
dadhīca uvāca | sarve śṛṇuta madvākyaṁ devarṣipramukhā mudā | kasmānnaivāgataḥ śambhurasmin yajñe mahotsave
Dadhichi said: "Listen all of you, chief among the divine sages, gladly to my words — why has Shambhu not come to this great festival of a sacrifice?"
Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.47.27)
ete sureśā munayo mahattarāḥ salokapālāśca samāgatā hi | tathāpi yajñastu na śobhate bhṛśaṁ pinākinā tena mahātmanā vinā
"All these lords of the gods, the great sages, and the guardians of the quarters have gathered here; yet without that great-souled Pinaka-bearer, this sacrifice does not shine forth in the least."
Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.47.28)
yenaiva sarvāṇyapi maṅgalāni bhavanti śaṁsanti mahāvipaścitaḥ | so'sau na dṛṣṭo'tra pumān purāṇo vṛṣadhvajo nīlagalaḥ pareśaḥ
"He by whose grace, as the greatest sages proclaim, all auspicious things come to pass — that ancient Person, bearer of the bull banner, blue-throated, the Supreme Lord — is nowhere to be seen here."
Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.47.29)
amaṅgalānyeva ca maṅgalāni bhavanti yenādhigatāni dakṣa | tripañcakenāpyatha maṅgalāni bhavanti sadyaḥ parataḥ parāṇi
"O Daksha, by attaining him even inauspicious things become auspicious; through him, even manifold rites of blessing at once yield the most supreme of fruits."
Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.47.30)
tasmāttvayaiva kartavyamāhvānaṁ parameśituḥ | tvaritaṁ brahmaṇā vāpi viṣṇunā prabhuviṣṇunā
"Therefore you yourself must send the invitation to the Supreme Lord — or else, without delay, have Brahma do so, or the Lord Vishnu himself."
Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.47.31)
indreṇa lokapālaiśca dvijaiḥ siddhaiḥ sahādhunā | sarvathānayanīyo'sau śaṅkaro yajñapūrtaye
"Together with Indra, the guardians of the quarters, the brahmins, and the Siddhas — by every means Shankara must now be brought here, for the fulfillment of this sacrifice."
Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.47.32)
sarvairbhavadbhirgantavyaṁ yatra devo maheśvaraḥ | dākṣāyaṇyā samaṁ śambhumānayadhvaṁ tvarānvitāḥ
"All of you should go where the god Maheshvara dwells; go swiftly and bring Shambhu here, together with Daksha's daughter."
Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.47.33)
tena sarvaṁ pavitraṁ syācchambhunā paramātmanā | atrāgatena deveśāḥ sāmbena paramātmanā
"O lords of the gods, only when that Shambhu, the Supreme Self, together with his consort, has come here shall all this become truly pure."
Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.47.34)
yasya smṛtyā ca nāmoktyā samagraṁ sukṛtaṁ bhavet | tasmātsarvaprayatnena hyānetavyo vṛṣadhvajaḥ
"He by whose mere remembrance and utterance of his name every good deed is accomplished — that bearer of the bull banner must be brought here by every possible effort."
Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.47.35)
samāgate śaṅkare'tra pāvano hi bhavenmakhaḥ | bhaviṣyatyanyathāpūrṇaḥ satyametad bravīmyaham
"Only when Shankara has come here will this sacrifice become truly purified; otherwise it shall remain incomplete — this I speak in all truth."
Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.47.36)
brahmovāca | tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā dakṣo roṣasamanvitaḥ | uvāca tvaritaṁ mūḍhaḥ prahasanniva duṣṭadhīḥ
Brahma said: Hearing his words, Daksha grew filled with rage, and that fool, his mind corrupted, spoke at once, as if with a mocking laugh.
Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.47.37)
mūlaṁ viṣṇurdevatānāṁ yatra dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ | samānīto mayā samyak kimūnaṁ yajñakarmaṇi
"Vishnu, the very root of the gods, in whom eternal dharma is enshrined, I have duly brought here — what, then, is lacking in this sacrificial rite?"
Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.47.38)
yasmin vedāśca yajñāśca karmāṇi vividhāni ca | pratiṣṭhitāni sarvāṇi so'sau viṣṇurihāgataḥ
"That very Vishnu, in whom the Vedas, the sacrifices, and manifold rites are all enshrined, has come here."
Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.47.39)
satyalokātsamāyāto brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ | vedaiḥ sopaniṣadbhiśca vividhairāgamaiḥ saha
"Brahma too, grandfather of the worlds, has come here from Satyaloka, together with the Vedas, the Upanishads, and manifold Agamas."
Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.47.40)
tathā suragaṇaiḥ sākamāgataḥ surarāṭ svayam | tathā yūyaṁ samāyātā ṛṣayo vītakalmaṣāḥ
"Likewise the King of the Gods himself has come, together with the hosts of gods, and you sages, too, free of all sin, have come here."
Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.47.41)
ye ye yajñocitāḥ śāntāḥ pātrabhūtāḥ samāgatāḥ | vedavedārthatattvajñāḥ sarve yūyaṁ dṛḍhavratāḥ
"Whoever here has come, fit for the sacrifice, tranquil, and worthy — all of you are knowers of the true meaning of the Vedas, firm in your vows."
Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.47.42)
atraiva ca kimasmākaṁ rudreṇāpi prayojanam | kanyā dattā mayā vipra brahmaṇā noditena hi
"So then, what need have we here for Rudra? O brahmins, I gave him my daughter only because Brahma himself urged me to do so."
Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.47.43)
haro'kulīno'sau vipra pitṛmātṛvivarjitaḥ | bhūtapretapiśācānāṁ patireko duratyayaḥ
"O brahmins, this Hara is of no lineage, without father or mother, and is nothing more than the sole, formidable lord of ghosts, spirits, and goblins."
Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.47.44)
ātmasambhāvito mūḍhaḥ stabdho maunī samatsaraḥ | karmaṇyasminna yogyo'sau nānīto hi mayādhunā
"He is a fool, self-conceited, arrogant, silent, and spiteful; for this reason, deeming him unworthy of this rite, I have not now invited him."
Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.47.45)
tasmāttvayedṛśaṁ vākyaṁ punarvācyaṁ na hi kvacit | sarvairbhavadbhiḥ kartavyo yajño me saphalo mahān
"Therefore you should never again speak such words; all of you together should now bring this great sacrifice of mine to a successful completion."
Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.47.46)
brahmovāca | etacchrutvā vacastasya dadhīcirvākyamabravīt | sarveṣāṁ śṛṇvatāṁ devamunīnāṁ sārasaṁyutam
Brahma said: Hearing Daksha's words, Dadhichi, in the hearing of all the gods and sages, spoke this weighty reply.
Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.47.47)
dadhīca uvāca | ayajño'yaṁ mahājāto vinā tena śivena hi | vināśo'pi viśeṣeṇa hyatra te hi bhaviṣyati
Dadhichi said: "Without that Shiva, this great sacrifice has become no sacrifice at all, but its very opposite; here, upon you especially, destruction shall surely fall."
Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.47.48)
evamuktvā dadhīco'sāveka eva vinirgataḥ | yajñavāṭācca dakṣasya tvaritaḥ svāśramaṁ yayau
Having spoken thus, Dadhichi alone departed at once, and swiftly left the precincts of Daksha's sacrifice for his own hermitage.
Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.47.49)
tato'nye śāṅkarā ye ca mukhyāḥ śivamatānugāḥ | niryayuḥ svāśramān sadyaḥ śāpaṁ dattvā tathaiva ca
Then the other leading devotees of Shiva, followers of the Shaiva path, likewise pronounced their own curses and at once departed for their respective hermitages.
Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.47.50)
munau vinirgate tasmin makhādanyeṣu duṣṭadhīḥ | śivadrohī munīn dakṣaḥ prahasannidamabravīt
When that sage and the others had thus departed from the sacrifice, Daksha, his mind corrupted, hostile toward Shiva, spoke of them mockingly.
Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.47.51)
dakṣa uvāca | gataḥ śivapriyo vipro dadhīco nāma nāmataḥ | anye tathāvidhā ye ca gatāste mama cādhvarāt
Daksha said: "Shiva's beloved brahmin, named Dadhichi, has gone; and the others of his kind who were like him have likewise departed from my sacrifice."
Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.47.52)
etacchubhataraṁ jātaṁ sammataṁ me hi sarvathā | satyaṁ bravīmi deveśa surāśca munayastathā
"This has turned out for the better, and it is entirely to my liking; O lords of the gods, O sages, I speak the truth."
Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.47.53)
vinaṣṭacittā mandāśca mithyāvādaratāḥ khalāḥ | vedabāhyā durācārāḥ tyājyāste makhakarmaṇi
"Those of ruined understanding, dull-witted, given to false speech, wicked, outside the Vedic fold, and of corrupt conduct — such men deserved to be cast out from this sacrificial rite."
Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.47.54)
vedavādaratā yūyaṁ sarve viṣṇupurogamāḥ | yajñaṁ me saphalaṁ viprāḥ surāḥ kurvantu māciram
"You are all devoted to the path of the Vedas, with Vishnu foremost among you; O brahmins, O gods, without delay, bring my sacrifice to its fruitful completion."
Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.47.55)
brahmovāca | ityākarṇya vacastasya śivamāyāvimohitāḥ | tanmakhe devayajanaṁ cakruḥ sarve surarṣayaḥ
Brahma said: Hearing his words, all the divine sages, still bewildered by Shiva's own power of illusion, continued the worship of the gods in that sacrifice.
Verse 56 (shiva.rudra.47.56)
iti tanmakhaśāpo hi varṇito me munīśvara | yajñavidhvaṁsayogo'pi procyate śṛṇu sādaram
O lord of sages, thus have I told of the curse laid upon that sacrifice; now the tale of the sacrifice's own destruction shall be told as well — listen to it with due reverence.
