The Removal of Daksha's Sorrow

Verse 1 (shiva.rudra.62.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । श्रीब्रह्मेशप्रजेशेन सदैव मुनिना च वै । अनुनीतः शम्भुरासीत्प्रसन्नः परमेश्वरः

brahmovāca | śrībrahmeśaprajeśena sadaiva muninā ca vai | anunītaḥ śambhurāsītprasannaḥ parameśvaraḥ

Brahma said: "Entreated by glorious Brahma, Lord of the Prajapatis, and ever by that sage, Shambhu, the Supreme Lord, became gracious."

Verse 2 (shiva.rudra.62.2)

आश्वास्य देवान् विष्ण्वादीन् विहस्य करुणानिधिः । उवाच परमेशानः कुर्वन् परमनुग्रहम्

āśvāsya devān viṣṇvādīn vihasya karuṇānidhiḥ | uvāca parameśānaḥ kurvan paramanugraham

"Having reassured the gods led by Vishnu, that treasury of compassion, the Supreme Lord, smiling, spoke, bestowing his supreme grace."

Verse 3 (shiva.rudra.62.3)

श्रीमहादेव उवाच । शृणुतं सावधानेन मम वाक्यं सुरोत्तमौ । यथार्थं वच्मि वां तात वां क्रोधं सर्वदासहम्

śrīmahādeva uvāca | śṛṇutaṁ sāvadhānena mama vākyaṁ surottamau | yathārthaṁ vacmi vāṁ tāta vāṁ krodhaṁ sarvadāsaham

Shri Mahadeva said: "Listen attentively, you two foremost of gods, to my words. I shall tell you the plain truth, dear ones — I have always borne with your anger."

Verse 4 (shiva.rudra.62.4)

नाघं तनौ तु बालानां वर्णये नानुचिन्तये । मम मायाभिभूतानां दण्डस्तत्र धृतो मया

nāghaṁ tanau tu bālānāṁ varṇaye nānucintaye | mama māyābhibhūtānāṁ daṇḍastatra dhṛto mayā

"I do not dwell on or reckon as sin the deeds of children; the punishment I imposed there was upon those overcome by my own maya."

Verse 5 (shiva.rudra.62.5)

दक्षस्य यज्ञभङ्गोऽयं न कृतश्च मया क्वचित् । परं द्वेष्टि परेषां यदात्मनस्तद्भविष्यति

dakṣasya yajñabhaṅgo'yaṁ na kṛtaśca mayā kvacit | paraṁ dveṣṭi pareṣāṁ yadātmanastadbhaviṣyati

"This destruction of Daksha's sacrifice was never, in truth, done by me at all. Whoever hates another shall himself receive the very same in return."

Verse 6 (shiva.rudra.62.6)

परेषां क्लेदनं कर्म न कार्यं तत् कदाचन । परं द्वेष्टि परेषां यदात्मनस्तद्भविष्यति

pareṣāṁ kledanaṁ karma na kāryaṁ tat kadācana | paraṁ dveṣṭi pareṣāṁ yadātmanastadbhaviṣyati

"One should never act so as to injure others; whoever hates another shall himself receive the very same in return."

Verse 7 (shiva.rudra.62.7)

दक्षस्य यज्ञशीर्ष्णो हि भवत्वजमुखं शिरः । मित्रनेत्रेण सम्पश्येद्यज्ञभागं भगः सुरः

dakṣasya yajñaśīrṣṇo hi bhavatvajamukhaṁ śiraḥ | mitranetreṇa sampaśyedyajñabhāgaṁ bhagaḥ suraḥ

"Let the head of Daksha, lord of the sacrifice, become the head of a goat; and let the god Bhaga behold his portion of the sacrifice with the eye of Mitra, the sun."

Verse 8 (shiva.rudra.62.8)

पूषाभिधः सुरस्तात दद्भिर्जक्षतु पिष्टभुक् । याजमानैर्भग्नदन्तः सत्यमेतन्मयोदितम्

pūṣābhidhaḥ surastāta dadbhirjakṣatu piṣṭabhuk | yājamānairbhagnadantaḥ satyametanmayoditam

"O dear one, let the god named Pushan, eater of ground grain, chew his food with the teeth given him by the sacrificers, even though his own were broken — this I speak in truth."

Verse 9 (shiva.rudra.62.9)

बस्तश्मश्रुर्भवेदेव भृगुर्मम विरोधकृत् । देवाः प्रकृतिसर्वाङ्गा ये म उच्छेषणं ददुः

bastaśmaśrurbhavedeva bhṛgurmama virodhakṛt | devāḥ prakṛtisarvāṅgā ye ma uccheṣaṇaṁ daduḥ

"Let Bhrigu, who set himself against me, have the beard of a goat; and let those gods whose bodies are otherwise whole give me their leftover portion."

Verse 10 (shiva.rudra.62.10)

बाहुभ्यामश्विनौ पूष्णो हस्ताभ्यां कृतवाहकः । भवन्त्वध्वर्यवश्चान्ये भवत्प्रीत्या मयोदितम्

bāhubhyāmaśvinau pūṣṇo hastābhyāṁ kṛtavāhakaḥ | bhavantvadhvaryavaścānye bhavatprītyā mayoditam

"Let the two Ashvins serve as Pushan's arms, and let him who was made a bearer of the offering serve as his hands; and let the others become his officiating priests — this I ordain out of my love for you both."

Verse 11 (shiva.rudra.62.11)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इत्युक्त्वा परमेशानो विरराम दयान्वितः । चराचरपतिर्देवः सम्राट् वेदानुसारकृत्

brahmovāca | ityuktvā parameśāno virarāma dayānvitaḥ | carācarapatirdevaḥ samrāṭ vedānusārakṛt

Brahma said: "Having said this, the Supreme Lord, full of compassion, the sovereign Lord of all moving and unmoving beings, he who acts in accordance with the Vedas, fell silent."

Verse 12 (shiva.rudra.62.12)

तदा सर्वे सुराद्यास्ते श्रुत्वा शङ्करभाषितम् । साधु साध्विति सम्प्रोचुः परितुष्टाः सविष्ण्वजाः

tadā sarve surādyāste śrutvā śaṅkarabhāṣitam | sādhu sādhviti samprocuḥ parituṣṭāḥ saviṣṇvajāḥ

"Then all the gods, together with Vishnu and Brahma, hearing Shankara's words, greatly pleased, exclaimed, 'Well said, well said!'"

Verse 13 (shiva.rudra.62.13)

ततः शम्भुं समामन्त्र्य मया विष्णुः सुरर्षिभिः । भूयस्तद्देवयजनं ययौ च परया मुदा

tataḥ śambhuṁ samāmantrya mayā viṣṇuḥ surarṣibhiḥ | bhūyastaddevayajanaṁ yayau ca parayā mudā

"Then, taking leave of Shambhu, Vishnu, together with me and the divine sages, went once more to that sacrificial ground of the gods, with the greatest joy."

Verse 14 (shiva.rudra.62.14)

एवं तेषां प्रार्थनया विष्णुप्रभृतिभिः सुरैः । ययौ कनखलं शम्भुर्यज्ञवाटं प्रजापतेः

evaṁ teṣāṁ prārthanayā viṣṇuprabhṛtibhiḥ suraiḥ | yayau kanakhalaṁ śambhuryajñavāṭaṁ prajāpateḥ

"Thus, at their entreaty, together with Vishnu and the other gods, Shambhu himself went to Kankhala, the sacrificial enclosure of the Prajapati."

Verse 15 (shiva.rudra.62.15)

रुद्रस्तदा ददर्शाथ वीरभद्रेण यत्कृतम् । प्रध्वंसं तं क्रतोस्तत्र देवर्षीणां विशेषतः

rudrastadā dadarśātha vīrabhadreṇa yatkṛtam | pradhvaṁsaṁ taṁ kratostatra devarṣīṇāṁ viśeṣataḥ

"Rudra then beheld there the destruction wrought by Virabhadra upon that sacrifice, and especially upon the gods and sages."

Verse 16 (shiva.rudra.62.16)

स्वहा स्वधा तथा पूषा तुष्टिर्धृतिः सरस्वती । तथान्ये ऋषयः सर्वे पितरश्चाग्नयस्तथा

svahā svadhā tathā pūṣā tuṣṭirdhṛtiḥ sarasvatī | tathānye ṛṣayaḥ sarve pitaraścāgnayastathā

"He saw Svaha, Svadha, and Pushan, Tushti, Dhriti, Sarasvati, and all the other sages besides, and the ancestral spirits, and the sacred fires as well."

Verse 17 (shiva.rudra.62.17)

येऽन्ये च बहवस्तत्र यक्षगन्धर्वराक्षसाः । त्रोटिता लुञ्चिताश्चैव मृताः केचिद्रणाजिरे

ye'nye ca bahavastatra yakṣagandharvarākṣasāḥ | troṭitā luñcitāścaiva mṛtāḥ kecidraṇājire

"And whatever other Yakshas, Gandharvas, and Rakshasas were there in great numbers — broken, torn, and some indeed slain on that battlefield."

Verse 18 (shiva.rudra.62.18)

यज्ञं तथाविधं दृष्ट्वा समाहूय गणाधिपम् । वीरभद्रं महावीर्यमुवाच प्रहसन् प्रभुः

yajñaṁ tathāvidhaṁ dṛṣṭvā samāhūya gaṇādhipam | vīrabhadraṁ mahāvīryamuvāca prahasan prabhuḥ

"Seeing the sacrifice in such a state, the Lord summoned the chief of his ganas, the mighty Virabhadra, and spoke to him, smiling."

Verse 19 (shiva.rudra.62.19)

वीरभद्र महाबाहो किं कृतं कर्म ते त्विदम् । महान् दण्डो धृतस्तात देवर्ष्यादिषु सत्वरम्

vīrabhadra mahābāho kiṁ kṛtaṁ karma te tvidam | mahān daṇḍo dhṛtastāta devarṣyādiṣu satvaram

"'O Virabhadra, mighty-armed one, what is this deed you have done? O dear one, you have swiftly imposed a very great punishment upon the gods, the sages, and the rest.'"

Verse 20 (shiva.rudra.62.20)

दक्षमानय शीघ्रं त्वं येनेदं कृतमीदृशम् । यज्ञो विलक्षणस्तात यस्येदं फलमीदृशम्

dakṣamānaya śīghraṁ tvaṁ yenedaṁ kṛtamīdṛśam | yajño vilakṣaṇastāta yasyedaṁ phalamīdṛśam

"'Bring Daksha here quickly — he by whom all this was thus brought about. O dear one, strange indeed is a sacrifice whose fruit turns out to be such as this!'"

Verse 21 (shiva.rudra.62.21)

ब्रह्मोवाच । एवमुक्तः शङ्करेण वीरभद्रस्त्वरान्वितः । कबन्धमानयित्वाग्रे तस्य शम्भोरथाक्षिपत्

brahmovāca | evamuktaḥ śaṅkareṇa vīrabhadrastvarānvitaḥ | kabandhamānayitvāgre tasya śambhorathākṣipat

Brahma said: "Thus addressed by Shankara, Virabhadra, at once, brought forward the headless trunk and cast it down before Shambhu."

Verse 22 (shiva.rudra.62.22)

विशिरस्कं च तं दृष्ट्वा शङ्करो लोकशङ्करः । वीरभद्रमुवाचाग्रे विहसन् मुनिसत्तम

viśiraskaṁ ca taṁ dṛṣṭvā śaṅkaro lokaśaṅkaraḥ | vīrabhadramuvācāgre vihasan munisattama

"Seeing that headless body, Shankara, the bringer of well-being to the world, laughing, spoke before them to Virabhadra, O foremost of sages."

Verse 23 (shiva.rudra.62.23)

शिरः कुत्रेति तेनोक्तं वीरभद्रोऽब्रवीत्प्रभुः । मया शिरो हुतं चाग्नौ तदानीमेव शङ्कर

śiraḥ kutreti tenoktaṁ vīrabhadro'bravītprabhuḥ | mayā śiro hutaṁ cāgnau tadānīmeva śaṅkara

"'Where is his head?' he asked. And the mighty Virabhadra replied: 'I offered his head into the fire that very moment, O Shankara.'"

Verse 24 (shiva.rudra.62.24)

इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य वीरभद्रस्य शङ्करः । देवान् तथाज्ञपत्प्रीत्या यदुक्तं तत्पुरा प्रभुः

iti śrutvā vacastasya vīrabhadrasya śaṅkaraḥ | devān tathājñapatprītyā yaduktaṁ tatpurā prabhuḥ

"Hearing these words of Virabhadra, Shankara, the Lord, then lovingly commanded the gods to do what he had already declared before."

Verse 25 (shiva.rudra.62.25)

विधाय कार्त्स्न्येन च तद्यदाह भगवान् भवः । मया विष्ण्वादयः सर्वे भृग्वादीनथ सत्वरम्

vidhāya kārtsnyena ca tadyadāha bhagavān bhavaḥ | mayā viṣṇvādayaḥ sarve bhṛgvādīnatha satvaram

"And having carried out fully all that the Lord Bhava had prescribed, all of us — Vishnu and the others — swiftly restored Bhrigu and the rest."

Verse 26 (shiva.rudra.62.26)

अथ प्रजापतेस्तस्य सवनीयपशोः शिरः । बस्तस्य सन्दधुः शम्भोः कायेनारं सुशासनात्

atha prajāpatestasya savanīyapaśoḥ śiraḥ | bastasya sandadhuḥ śambhoḥ kāyenāraṁ suśāsanāt

"Then, by Shambhu's own good command, they joined the head of a sacrificial goat swiftly onto the body of that Prajapati."

Verse 27 (shiva.rudra.62.27)

सन्धीयमाने शिरसि शम्भुसद्दृष्टिवीक्षितः । सद्यः सुप्त इवोत्तस्थौ लब्धप्राणः प्रजापतिः

sandhīyamāne śirasi śambhusaddṛṣṭivīkṣitaḥ | sadyaḥ supta ivottasthau labdhaprāṇaḥ prajāpatiḥ

"As that head was being joined on, gazed upon by Shambhu's own gracious eye, the Prajapati, his life restored, rose up at once as if merely waking from sleep."

Verse 28 (shiva.rudra.62.28)

उत्थितश्चाग्रतः शम्भुं ददर्श करुणानिधिम् । दक्षः प्रीतमतिः प्रीत्या संस्थितः सुप्रसन्नधीः

utthitaścāgrataḥ śambhuṁ dadarśa karuṇānidhim | dakṣaḥ prītamatiḥ prītyā saṁsthitaḥ suprasannadhīḥ

"Rising up, Daksha beheld before him Shambhu, that treasury of compassion; his mind full of love, his understanding utterly serene, he stood there filled with joy."

Verse 29 (shiva.rudra.62.29)

पुरा हरमहाद्वेषकलिलात्माभवद्धि सः । शिवावलोकनात् सद्यः शरच्चन्द्र इवामलः

purā haramahādveṣakalilātmābhavaddhi saḥ | śivāvalokanāt sadyaḥ śaraccandra ivāmalaḥ

"Though before this his very soul had been fouled with the great hatred he bore toward Hara, at the mere sight of Shiva he became at once as spotless as the autumn moon."

Verse 30 (shiva.rudra.62.30)

भवं स्तोतुमनाः सोऽथ नाशक्नोदनुरागतः । उत्कण्ठाविकलत्वाच्च सम्परेतां सुतां स्मरन्

bhavaṁ stotumanāḥ so'tha nāśaknodanurāgataḥ | utkaṇṭhāvikalatvācca samparetāṁ sutāṁ smaran

"Then, though his mind was set on praising Bhava, he could not do so out of the very depth of his love, and out of being overcome with longing as he remembered his dead daughter."

Verse 31 (shiva.rudra.62.31)

अथ दक्षः प्रसन्नात्मा शिवं लज्जासमन्वितः । तुष्टाव प्रणतो भूत्वा शङ्करं लोकशङ्करम्

atha dakṣaḥ prasannātmā śivaṁ lajjāsamanvitaḥ | tuṣṭāva praṇato bhūtvā śaṅkaraṁ lokaśaṅkaram

"Then Daksha, his heart at peace though filled with shame, bowed down and praised Shiva, Shankara, the bringer of well-being to the world."

Verse 32 (shiva.rudra.62.32)

दक्ष उवाच । नमामि देव वरदं वरेण्यं महेश्वरं ज्ञाननिधिं सनातनम् । नमामि देवाधिपतीश्वरं हरं सदा सुखाढ्यं जगदेकबान्धवम्

dakṣa uvāca | namāmi deva varadaṁ vareṇyaṁ maheśvaraṁ jñānanidhiṁ sanātanam | namāmi devādhipatīśvaraṁ haraṁ sadā sukhāḍhyaṁ jagadekabāndhavam

Daksha said: "I bow to the god who grants boons, the most excellent one, Maheshvara, the eternal treasury of knowledge. I bow to Hara, the Lord and ruler of the gods, ever abounding in bliss, the sole kinsman of the whole world."

Verse 33 (shiva.rudra.62.33)

नमामि विश्वेश्वर विश्वरूपं पुरातनं ब्रह्मनिजात्मरूपम् । नमामि शर्वं भवभावभावं परात्परं शङ्करमानतोऽस्मि

namāmi viśveśvara viśvarūpaṁ purātanaṁ brahmanijātmarūpam | namāmi śarvaṁ bhavabhāvabhāvaṁ parātparaṁ śaṅkaramānato'smi

"I bow to the Lord of the universe, whose form is the universe itself, the ancient one, whose very self is the nature of Brahman. I bow to Sharva, the very being within all becoming; I have bowed down to Shankara, higher than the highest."

Verse 34 (shiva.rudra.62.34)

देवदेव महादेव कृपां कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते । अपराधं क्षमस्वाद्य मम शम्भो कृपानिधे

devadeva mahādeva kṛpāṁ kuru namo'stu te | aparādhaṁ kṣamasvādya mama śambho kṛpānidhe

"O god of gods, O Mahadeva, show mercy — salutation be to you. Forgive today my offense, O Shambhu, O treasury of compassion."

Verse 35 (shiva.rudra.62.35)

अनुग्रहः कृतस्ते हि दण्डव्याजेन शङ्कर । खलोऽहं मूढधीर्देव ज्ञातं तत्त्वं मया न ते

anugrahaḥ kṛtaste hi daṇḍavyājena śaṅkara | khalo'haṁ mūḍhadhīrdeva jñātaṁ tattvaṁ mayā na te

"Indeed you showed me grace under the pretext of punishment, O Shankara. I am a wicked, dull-witted fool, O god — I did not know your true nature."

Verse 36 (shiva.rudra.62.36)

अद्य ज्ञातं मया तत्त्वं सर्वोपरि भवान्मतः । विष्णुब्रह्मादिभिः सेव्यो वेदवेद्यो महेश्वरः

adya jñātaṁ mayā tattvaṁ sarvopari bhavānmataḥ | viṣṇubrahmādibhiḥ sevyo vedavedyo maheśvaraḥ

"Today I have come to know the truth — you are held to be above all, Maheshvara, served even by Vishnu and Brahma, knowable only through the Vedas."

Verse 37 (shiva.rudra.62.37)

साधूनां कल्पवृक्षस्त्वं दुष्टानां दण्डधृक् सदा । स्वतन्त्रः परमात्मा हि भक्ताभीष्टवरप्रदः

sādhūnāṁ kalpavṛkṣastvaṁ duṣṭānāṁ daṇḍadhṛk sadā | svatantraḥ paramātmā hi bhaktābhīṣṭavarapradaḥ

"You are the wish-fulfilling tree to the virtuous, and the ever-present wielder of the rod of punishment to the wicked; the independent Supreme Self, the bestower of desired boons upon your devotees."

Verse 38 (shiva.rudra.62.38)

विद्यातपोव्रतधरानसृजः प्रथमं द्विजा । आत्मतत्त्वं समावेत्तुं मुखतः परमेश्वरः

vidyātapovratadharānasṛjaḥ prathamaṁ dvijā | ātmatattvaṁ samāvettuṁ mukhataḥ parameśvaraḥ

"You first created the twice-born, bearers of learning, austerity, and vows, so that they, from your very mouth, might come to fully understand the truth of the Self, O Supreme Lord."

Verse 39 (shiva.rudra.62.39)

सर्वापद्भ्यः पालयिता गोपतिस्तु पशूनिव । गृहीतदण्डो दुष्टांस्तान् मर्यादापरिपालकः

sarvāpadbhyaḥ pālayitā gopatistu paśūniva | gṛhītadaṇḍo duṣṭāṁstān maryādāparipālakaḥ

"You are the protector from every calamity, as a herdsman protects his cattle; and, rod of punishment in hand, you are the guardian of the boundaries of dharma against the wicked."

Verse 40 (shiva.rudra.62.40)

मया दुरुक्तविशिखैः प्रविद्धः परमेश्वरः । अमरानतिदीनाशान् मदनुग्रहकारकः

mayā duruktaviśikhaiḥ praviddhaḥ parameśvaraḥ | amarānatidīnāśān madanugrahakārakaḥ

"By me, O Supreme Lord, you were pierced with the arrows of my harsh words; and yet, though the gods were themselves rendered utterly wretched and hopeless, you have shown me your grace."

Verse 41 (shiva.rudra.62.41)

स भवान् भगवान् शम्भो दीनबन्धो परात्परः । स्वकृतेन महार्हेण सन्तुष्टो भक्तवत्सल

sa bhavān bhagavān śambho dīnabandho parātparaḥ | svakṛtena mahārheṇa santuṣṭo bhaktavatsala

"You, O Lord, O Shambhu, friend of the humble, higher than the highest, are satisfied even by a small worthy deed offered by your devotee, O you who are ever affectionate to your devotees."

Verse 42 (shiva.rudra.62.42)

ब्रह्मोवाच । इति स्तुत्वा महेशानं शङ्करं लोकशङ्करम् । प्रजापतिर्विनीतात्मा विरराम महाप्रभुम्

brahmovāca | iti stutvā maheśānaṁ śaṅkaraṁ lokaśaṅkaram | prajāpatirvinītātmā virarāma mahāprabhum

Brahma said: "Having thus praised the great Lord Shankara, the bringer of well-being to the world, that great Prajapati, his soul humbled, fell silent before the great Lord."

Verse 43 (shiva.rudra.62.43)

अथ विष्णुः प्रसन्नात्मा तुष्टाव वृषभध्वजम् । बाष्पगद्गदया वाण्या सुप्रणम्य कृताञ्जलिः

atha viṣṇuḥ prasannātmā tuṣṭāva vṛṣabhadhvajam | bāṣpagadgadayā vāṇyā supraṇamya kṛtāñjaliḥ

"Then Vishnu, his heart at peace, having bowed down well with folded hands, praised the bull-bannered Lord with a voice choked with tears."

Verse 44 (shiva.rudra.62.44)

विष्णुरुवाच । महादेव महेशान लोकानुग्रहकारक । परब्रह्म परात्मा त्वं दीनबन्धो दयानिधे

viṣṇuruvāca | mahādeva maheśāna lokānugrahakāraka | parabrahma parātmā tvaṁ dīnabandho dayānidhe

Vishnu said: "O Mahadeva, O great Lord, bestower of grace upon the worlds! You are the Supreme Brahman, the Supreme Self, friend of the humble, treasury of compassion."

Verse 45 (shiva.rudra.62.45)

सर्वव्यापी स्वैरवर्ती वेदवेद्ययशाः प्रभो । अनुग्रहः कृतस्तेन कृताश्चासुकृता वयम्

sarvavyāpī svairavartī vedavedyayaśāḥ prabho | anugrahaḥ kṛtastena kṛtāścāsukṛtā vayam

"All-pervading, moving by your own will alone, O Lord whose glory is known through the Vedas — by your grace we, though we have done ill, have been made worthy."

Verse 46 (shiva.rudra.62.46)

दक्षोऽयं मम भक्तस्त्वां यन्निनिन्द खलः पुरा । तत् क्षन्तव्यं महेशाद्य निर्विकारो यतो भवान्

dakṣo'yaṁ mama bhaktastvāṁ yannininda khalaḥ purā | tat kṣantavyaṁ maheśādya nirvikāro yato bhavān

"This Daksha is a devotee of mine; whatever he, in his wickedness, once spoke against you, that should be forgiven now, O great Lord, since you are ever beyond all change."

Verse 47 (shiva.rudra.62.47)

कृतो मयापराधोऽपि तव शङ्कर मौढ्यतः । त्वद्गणेन कृतं युद्धं वीरभद्रेण पक्षतः

kṛto mayāparādho'pi tava śaṅkara mauḍhyataḥ | tvadgaṇena kṛtaṁ yuddhaṁ vīrabhadreṇa pakṣataḥ

"I too, O Shankara, out of folly, committed an offense against you; the battle fought against your gana Virabhadra was fought by me only out of taking a side."

Verse 48 (shiva.rudra.62.48)

त्वं मे स्वामी परब्रह्म दासोऽहं ते सदाशिव । पोष्यश्चापि सदा ते हि सर्वेषां त्वं पिता यतः

tvaṁ me svāmī parabrahma dāso'haṁ te sadāśiva | poṣyaścāpi sadā te hi sarveṣāṁ tvaṁ pitā yataḥ

"You are my Lord, the Supreme Brahman; I am ever your servant, O Sadashiva; and I am also ever to be nourished by you, since you are the father of all beings."

Verse 49 (shiva.rudra.62.49)

ब्रह्मोवाच । देवदेव महादेव करुणासागर प्रभो । स्वतन्त्रः परमात्मा त्वं परमेशोऽद्वयोऽव्ययः

brahmovāca | devadeva mahādeva karuṇāsāgara prabho | svatantraḥ paramātmā tvaṁ parameśo'dvayo'vyayaḥ

Brahma said: "Then I too spoke: 'O god of gods, O Mahadeva, O ocean of compassion, O Lord! You are the independent Supreme Self, the Supreme Lord, non-dual, imperishable.'"

Verse 50 (shiva.rudra.62.50)

मम पुत्रोपरि कृतो देवानुग्रह ईश्वर । स्वापमानमगणयन् दक्षयज्ञं समुद्धर

mama putropari kṛto devānugraha īśvara | svāpamānamagaṇayan dakṣayajñaṁ samuddhara

"'O Lord, show your divine grace upon my son; setting aside the disrespect done to you, restore Daksha's sacrifice.'"

Verse 51 (shiva.rudra.62.51)

प्रसन्नो भव देवेश सर्वशापान्निराकुरु । सबोधः प्रेरकस्त्वं मे त्वमेव विनिवारकः

prasanno bhava deveśa sarvaśāpānnirākuru | sabodhaḥ prerakastvaṁ me tvameva vinivārakaḥ

"'Be gracious, O Lord of gods; remove all the curses. You alone are the one who inspires my understanding, and you alone are the one who restrains it.'"

Verse 52 (shiva.rudra.62.52)

इति स्तुत्वा महेशानं परमं च महामुने । कृताञ्जलिपुटो भूत्वा विनम्रीकृतमस्तकः

iti stutvā maheśānaṁ paramaṁ ca mahāmune | kṛtāñjalipuṭo bhūtvā vinamrīkṛtamastakaḥ

O great sage, having thus praised the great and supreme Lord, with hands folded in reverence and head bowed low —

Verse 53 (shiva.rudra.62.53)

अथ शक्रादयो देवा लोकपालाः सुचेतसः । तुष्टुवुः शङ्करं देवं प्रसन्नमुखपङ्कजम्

atha śakrādayo devā lokapālāḥ sucetasaḥ | tuṣṭuvuḥ śaṅkaraṁ devaṁ prasannamukhapaṅkajam

— then Indra and the other gods, the world-guardians, their hearts made pure, praised the god Shankara, whose lotus face was full of grace.

Verse 54 (shiva.rudra.62.54)

ततः प्रसन्नमनसः सर्वे देवास्तथा परे । सिद्धर्षयः प्रजेशाश्च तुष्टुवुः शङ्करं मुदा

tataḥ prasannamanasaḥ sarve devāstathā pare | siddharṣayaḥ prajeśāśca tuṣṭuvuḥ śaṅkaraṁ mudā

Then, their minds at peace, all the other gods too, the Siddhas, the sages, and the Prajapatis, joyfully praised Shankara.

Verse 55 (shiva.rudra.62.55)

तथोपदेवनागाश्च सदस्या ब्राह्मणास्तथा । प्रणम्य परया भक्त्या तुष्टुवुश्च पृथक् पृथक्

tathopadevanāgāśca sadasyā brāhmaṇāstathā | praṇamya parayā bhaktyā tuṣṭuvuśca pṛthak pṛthak

And likewise the lesser gods, the Nagas, the assembly members, and the Brahmins, bowing down with the deepest devotion, each praised him in their own turn, one by one.
